They’re boldly going back.

Paramount is planning to enter negotiations for “ Star Trek ” stars Chris Pine , Zachary Quinto , Zoe Saldana, Karl Urban, John Cho and Simon Pegg to return to the Enterprise for their fourth tour of duty in the venerable sci-fi franchise.

The announcement was made by J.J. Abrams during the Paramount Investors Day Presentation on Feb. 15.

“We are thrilled to say that we are hard at work on a new ‘Star Trek’ film that will be shooting by the end of the year that will be featuring our original cast and some new characters that I think are going to be really fun and exciting and help take ‘Star Trek’ into areas that you’ve just never seen before,” Abrams said. “We’re thrilled about this film, we have a bunch of other stories that we’re talking about that we think will be really exciting, so can’t wait for you to see what we’re cooking up. But until then, live long and prosper.”

The six actors first stepped into their respective iconic roles as Kirk, Spock, Uhura, Bones, Sulu and Scotty in 2009’s “Star Trek,” directed by Abrams, which reset the “Trek” timeline and allowed for the reboot to exist unencumbered from the hundreds of hours of “Trek” continuity that had come before. The actors returned in two sequels, 2013’s “Star Trek Into Darkness,” also directed by Abrams, and 2016’s “Star Trek Beyond,” directed by Justin Lin.

Abrams is producing the new, as-yet-untitled film through Bad Robot, with Matt Shakman (“WandaVision”) directing from a screenplay by Josh Friedman (“Avatar 2”) and Cameron Squires (“WandaVision”) based on a earlier draft by Lindsey Beer (“Sierra Burgess Is a Loser”) and Geneva Robertson-Dworet (“Captain Marvel”).

Paramount was close to bringing back this cast once before: In 2018, S.J. Clarkson (“Jessica Jones”) had signed up to direct a sequel that would have reunited Pine’s Kirk with his late father, played by Chris Hemsworth reprising his performance from the 2009 “Star Trek.” That film never materialized, however, after Paramount reportedly couldn’t close a deal with Pine and Hemsworth.

Since then, insiders say the studio has done market research to determine audience interest in the rebooted cast, given the long wait period between “Beyond” — which lost money for Paramount — and a prospective new “Trek” film. Execs determined that there was still lasting audience enthusiasm for Pine, Quinto and the rest of the cast in their established roles, which allowed the studio to feel comfortable with moving forward with bringing them back.

Paramount has also explored several other avenues for “Trek” features, none of which seem to have ultimately borne fruit. Quentin Tarantino reportedly cooled on a “Star Trek” script he was pursuing with “The Revenant” screenwriter Mark L. Smith. In late 2019, Paramount tapped “Fargo” and “Legion” creator Noah Hawley to write and direct a “Trek” movie that Hawley planned to feature new actors playing new characters. But when Emma Watts became president of the Paramount Motion Picture Group a few months later, insiders say she paused all “Trek” development, including Hawley’s film , to decide how best to move forward with one of the studio’s crown jewel franchises. With Watts’ departure from Paramount in September, it’s unclear what the current “Trek” film portends for other development for the franchise, including a screenplay by “Fear the Walking Dead” co-executive producer Kalinda Vazquez .

Bringing the 2009 “Trek” cast back could prove a challenge given they’ve all had busy schedules since “Beyond.” Pine added the “Wonder Woman” franchise to his resume and he’ll next appear in Olivia Wilde’s thriller “Don’t Worry Darling” and the black-ops film “Violence of Action.” Quinto headlined the AMC series “NOS4A2,” and starred in the Broadway revival of “The Boys in the Band” and its 2020 Netflix film adaptation. Saldana continued her run as Gamora in several Marvel Studios films, including “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2” and “Avengers: Endgame”; she’ll star in “Avatar 2” this year and in “Guardians Vol. 3” in 2023. Urban appeared in 2017’s “Thor: Ragnarok” and he’ll continue his performance as Billy Butcher on Season 3 of Amazon’s “The Boys” in June. Cho starred in acclaimed indies “Columbus” and “Searching,” and he starred in Netflix’s live-action adaption of the anime series “Cowboy Bebop.” And Pegg starred with Nick Frost on Amazon’s horror comedy series “Truth Seekers,” and he’ll reprise his role as Benji in “Mission: Impossible 7” in 2023.

One member of the 2009 “Trek” cast, however, sadly cannot join them. Anton Yelchin, who played Chekov, died in an accident in June 2016, a month before “Beyond” opened in theaters. At that film’s premiere at San Diego Comic Con, the cast, filmmakers and invited guests sat in a full minute of silence in tribute to the late actor.

New 'Star Trek' film will explore early years of Starfleet, Paramount reveals

This upcoming sci-fi origin film hails from producer J.J. Abrams and 'Andor' director Toby Haynes

Star Trek 2009 Spock and Kirk

With "Star Trek" flourishing on the small screen with offerings like "Star Trek: Strange New Worlds," "Star Trek: Discovery," "Star Trek: Picard," "Star Trek: Prodigy" and "Star Trek: Lower Decks," it's high time fans were treated to another big screen "Star Trek" feature film, and now our hard-fought wish has been answered.

As recently announced at Deadline , J.J. Abrams will executive produce a new " Star Trek " movie set decades earlier in his fractured Kelvin timeline that was first established in the filmmaker's 2009 reboot simply titled "Star Trek." (Check out our primer for every Star Trek movies in order if you need a refresher.) Fortifying the creative team is Toby Haynes, one of the main directors of Disney+'s acclaimed "Star Wars" series, "Andor," starring Diego Luna's enigmatic rebel spy Cassian Andor.

Get all the Star Trek content you can possibly handle with this free trial of Paramount Plus. Watch new shows like Star Trek: Strange New Worlds and all the classic Trek movies and TV shows too. Plans start from $4.99/month after the trial ends.

Haynes is helming this upcoming "Star Trek" film, which is destined to examine the early days of Starfleet a generation or so after the events of the prime universe's "Star Trek: Enterprise," from a screenplay written by the king of literary mash-ups, Seth Grahame-Smith ("Pride and Prejudice and Zombies," "Abraham Lincoln," Vampire Hunter," "The Lego Batman Movie").

J.J. Abrams will act as producer under his familiar Bad Robot banner.

Apparently, similar to "Star Trek," " Star Trek Into Darkness ," and " Star Trek Beyond ," this new movie will occur along that alternate Kelvin timeline emerging into existence when the renegade Romulan Nero (Eric Bana) accidentally launched back in time after a supernova wiped out his Romulan homeworld. We ranked every Star Trek movie worst to best so far, so let us know which one was your favorite.

The last time we were treated to a "Star Trek" movie was back in 2016 for "Star Trek Beyond," right before the IP was expanded in 2017's "Star Trek: Discovery" and the mission to restore its former glory began on the CBS All Access (rebranded as Paramount Plus ) streaming platform. No further plot details have been announced so stay tuned as production and casting ramp up.

And don't worry, a fourth big screen installment of Abrams' original Kelvin timeline is still languishing in the Hollywood pipeline featuring Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, and Zoe Saldana to provide the popular sci-fi franchise's faithful fans plenty of exciting projects to look forward to in the final frontier.

The next Star Trek movie could be a giant No Way Home -style crossover, J.J. Abrams hints

The Kelvin Universe is back as J.J. Abrams drops hints about "new characters."

star trek movie news

It’s sabotage! After six years, and a whole lot of Trek in between, the reboot Kelvin Universe created by the 2009 film, Star Trek — and its two sequels Star Trek Into Darkness (2013) and Star Trek Beyond (2016) is finally returning. Probably.

As of February 2022, Paramount and J.J. Abrams have indicated that the adventures of the reboot crew will continue in a new film, directed by WandaVision’s Matt Shakman. To make this happen the cast of the reboot films — including Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, and Zoe Saldana — is expected to return. But what about the rest of Trek? Here’s why some kind of possible crossover between TV Trek and Movie Trek is a really good bet.

SEOUL, SOUTH KOREA - AUGUST 16: Actor Chris Pine (L) , Simon Pegg (2nd L), Zachary Quinto (R) and Di...

Chris Pine, Simon Pegg, Beyond director Justin Lin and Zachary Quinto in 2016.

What is the Star Trek 2023 movie?

Right now, very little is actually known about the 2023 movie Star Trek movie. Announced in July 2021 , the film will be directed by Matt Shakman, produced by J.J. Abrams, and written by Lindsey Beer and Geneva Robertson. It’s expected to be released in December 2023.

During the ViacomCBS Investor’s Day, Abrams also revealed that the “original” cast of the 2009 film is expected to return. Obviously, this refers to the reboot lineup, which includes Chris Pine as Captain Kirk, Zachary Quinto as Spock, Karl Urban as Bones, Simon Pegg as Scotty, John Cho as Sulu, and Zoe Saldana as Uhura. ( Anton Yelchin , who played Chekov in all three reboot films tragically passed away before the release of Beyond in 2016.)

To be clear, the reboot casn’t hasn’t been 100 percent confirmed, but Abrams basically said they’re all back. Here’s his exact quote, via StarTrek.com.

“We are thrilled to say that we are hard at work on a new Star Trek film that we’ll be shooting by the end of the year, featuring our original cast and some new characters that I think are going to be really fun and exciting, and help take Star Trek into areas that you’ve just never seen before.”

So that seems to confirm it. The next Star Trek film will continue in the alternate “Kelvin Universe” timeline established in the 2009 film, while the rest of the shows currently airing on Paramount+ — set in the “Prime Universe” — won’t be part of the movie at all.

star trek movie news

Picard and Kirk met and teamed up in 1994’s Star Trek Generations .

A Star Trek crossover happened before

From 2009-2016, during the timeframe that all three of the Abrams-produced reboot films hit theaters, the rights to make Star Trek movies and Star Trek TV shows were owned by two separate entities. Until 2019 — two years into production on the new Trek TV series, starting with Discovery — Paramount was not part of the same parent company as CBS. But, after the Viacom-CBS merger of 2019, that all changed, which put all the rights to make all the Star Trek back under the same starship roof.

In other words, for longtime fans of Star Trek, 2019 is the first time since 2006 that things have been “back to normal.” Although the Trek films in the ‘80s were produced and managed differently from The Next Generation, the parent company was always Paramount.

In the 1990s, this resulted in a lot of crossover between TV Star Trek and movie Star Trek. In 1991, Star Trek VI referenced The Next Generation and even featured Michael Dorn as an ancestor of Worf. Star Trek Generations in 1994 was a complete crossover between the classic films and the TNG TV show, and 1996’s First Contact featured big references and cameos from both Deep Space Nine and Voyager .

To be clear, this kind of shared franchise wasn’t the norm back then. The Marvel Cinematic Universe didn’t exist in the 1990s, and the idea of big-screen movies referencing their TV counterparts was basically unheard of. Star Trek did it back when it wasn’t fashionable.

Now the franchise can totally do it again, only much bigger. Abrams’ announcement is interesting because he basically confirms the return of the reboot crew, but the other part of his quote could maybe suggest a big crossover is coming. Who are these “new characters” and what are the “new areas” Star Trek could be taken into?

star trek movie news

Spock (Ethan Peck) and Spock (Zachary Quinto).

Imagine... Star Trek: No Way Home

In Spider-Man: No Way Hom e , Marvel brought three different Spider-Man actors from three separate movie canons together for one big crossover film. Now, in terms of an onscreen multiverse for its films and TV shows, Marvel has just lately started exploring this concept. (Although superhero comics have, of course, been doing multiverse stuff for decades.)

However, Star Trek has been working with alternate timelines and divergent canons for a while. Although the vast majority of Trek prior to 2009 takes place in the “Prime Universe,” several episodes also took place in the Mirror Universe, while some films (like First Contact ) suggested various alternate dimensions were in play unless time travel shenanigans “fixed” something.

In 2009, the first Star Trek reboot (which arguably popularized the term “reboot” relative to films) overtly created a divergent timeline with a very specific caveat; this alternate timeline was caused by time travel from the regular one. In other words, in order for Pine’s Kirk and Quinto’s Spock to exist, the other universe had to happen “first.”

Since the launch of Discovery in 2017 (set in the Prime Universe) the newer shows mention the Kelvin Universe all that much. But in 2020, the backstory of Star Trek: Picard relied on the Romulan Supernova, which, of course, was the backstory to the 2009 reboot film. On top of that, in Discovery Season 3, the Kelvin Universe was outright mentioned by DISCO’s resident multiverse expert, Kovich (David Cronenberg.) At this point, the new shows have made it very clear to longtime fans that yes, the people in the Prime Universe know about the Kelvin Universe, too.

Does this mean multiple Spocks will meet in the 2023 Trek movie? Because Ethan Peck is currently the canonical Prime Universe Spock in Strange New Worlds , it feels possible he could meet Zachary Quinto’s Spock from the Kelvin Universe. And with some time travel shenanigans and a little CGI, you could maybe get Leonard Nimoy in there, too. Three Spocks? Spock No Way Home ? It could happen!

More broadly, Paramount has been using Star Trek as its flagship franchise on its streaming service, Paramount+. If Paramount puts out a new Star Trek movie into theaters in 2023, and that film doesn’t reference the continuity of the five distinct TV series currently streaming, then this whole enterprise won’t make any sense. As all versions of Spock might say, the return of the Kelvin Universe crew means a larger Trek crossover is not only logical but perhaps, inevitable.

The new Star Trek film will go into production in late 2022.

Star Trek 4 potential release date, cast and everything you need to know

A new Star Trek movie is coming, but not necessarily this one.

preview for Chris Pine's Red Carpet Evolution

Star Trek 4 cast: Who's going to be in Star Trek 4?

Star trek 4 plot: what's going to happen in star trek 4, star trek 4 trailer: any star trek 4 footage yet.

Star Trek 4 still doesn't seem to be any closer to happening, but we are getting a new Star Trek movie.

In January 2024, it was reported that a prequel movie set decades before the 2009 reboot is happening. JJ Abrams will again be producing through his Bad Robot company, with Toby Haynes directing and Seth Grahame-Smith writing the script.

Apparently this isn't a death knell to Star Trek 4 's chances of happening as it is reportedly still in "active development" as of January 2024. There has been no new information on the status of the movie, though.

In September 2023, writer Lindsey Anderson Beer said that the movie was "still on the tracks" , and later that month, Variety reported that Paramount was hoping to fast-track scripts for a "planned reboot of Star Trek ".

Whether this "planned reboot" is the now-announced prequel or something else, we have no idea right now. Neither does Chris Pine. "Not that I know [of]," he told ComicBook.com in November 2023 when asked if he knew about any plans for a fourth Star Trek movie.

chris pine as captain kirk in a still from star trek beyond

The long-gestating movie finally looked to be on track in February 2022 when it was announced that JJ Abrams was returning to produce and Matt Shakman to directing, to the surprise of the cast as much as the fans.

Unfortunately, Shakman left the movie in August 2022 to direct Fantastic Four for Marvel instead . And then in September 2022, Paramount took the movie off the release calendar entirely, but at least it sounds like a director search is ongoing.

In March 2023, JJ Abrams – who has produced all three movies in the reboot trilogy and directed two of them – said that a search for a director is ongoing.

"I will say it's the first time [since the original reboot] that we have a story that feels as compelling as the first one," he told Esquire . Of course, Chris Pine also called the franchise "cursed" so it depends how hopeful you feel like being.

All we really know right now is that Star Trek 4 is obviously not coming to cinemas in December 2023 as it was originally announced.

But while we wait, here's everything you need to know about the (potential) return of the USS Enterprise in Star Trek 4 .

Star Trek 4 potential release date: When can we expect Star Trek 4?

As you'll know from reading the above, Star Trek 4 hasn't got a confirmed release date at the moment, having been indefinitely delayed from the planned December 22, 2023 slot.

There's no rumours either about when it could reappear on the schedule.

In June 2022, prior to Shakman leaving the project, Paramount boss Brian Robbins did confirm development was under way on the fourth Star Trek . "We're deep into it with JJ Abrams, and it feels like we're getting close to the starting line and excited about where we're going creatively," he said .

zoe saldana as uhura and john cho as sulu in a still from star trek beyond

However, in November 2022, star Zachary Quinto told The Independent : "At this point, I honestly have very little attachment to it.

"All of us would like to come back and make another movie, but I’ve learnt to only get excited about things I know are actually real. And there's nothing about a fourth Star Trek movie that feels real right now."

Other people involved, like writer Lindsey Anderson Beer as mentioned above, seem to have faith in the project moving forward though.

All we can do is watch this space.

star trek

Even when Star Trek 4 was originally being released in December 2023, it hadn't been 100% confirmed that the reboot cast would be back.

That being said, during his June 2022 announcement, Robbins did say he knew audience "wants that cast in this movie" – referring to the reboot cast.

So, if it ever does come to fruition, we'd be surprised if it was with a brand-new cast. You can likely then expect the returns of Chris Pine (Kirk), Zachary Quinto (Spock), Zoe Saldaña (Uhura), Karl Urban (Bones), John Cho (Sulu) and Simon Pegg (Scotty).

Urban certainly seems keen for a return, although he also revealed in March 2022 that, like Pine, he hadn't read a script yet . "I would love to work with those guys again; so much fun, the best hang. We'll see," he enthused.

It all feels very up in the air, as per Quinto's quotes, but that doesn't mean we can't hope.

The initial plan for the fourth movie was to have a timey-wimey adventure that featured Chris Pine's James T Kirk somehow joining forces with his long-dead dad, played by Chris Hemsworth .

Hemsworth opened up in May 2019 about why he stepped away from the movie , saying: "I didn't feel like we landed on a reason to revisit that yet. I didn't want to be underwhelmed by what I was going to bring to the table."

chris hemsworth as george kirk in star trek

It's unclear if this new version of Star Trek 4 plans to bring Hemsworth back or if it's gone in a totally new direction, but Hemsworth seems open to a return for the fourth movie.

In October 2022, Rings of Power bosses JD Payne and Patrick McKay teased more about what their original idea for the fourth movie was going to be. "The conceit was that through a cosmic quirk in the Star Trek world, they were the same age," McKay explained.

We also don't know yet whether the new movie will recast Pavel Chekov following Anton Yelchin's tragic death in 2016. "It's bittersweet because we are coming together for a fourth time, and one of us is no longer with us," Saldaña said in March 2022 .

"But we honestly feel that going back and keeping the Star Trek family together is a way to really keep him alive in our thoughts and our hearts."

Star Trek Beyond Zoe Saldana as Uhura

Right now, we don't have any confirmed plot details for the fourth movie, and it's not clear how closely it'll follow on from the ending of Star Trek Beyond .

The third movie ended with Kirk declining the promotion to vice admiral and staying as the captain of the USS Enterprise. Spock also chose to remain in Starfleet and reignited his romance with Uhura.

As the movie ends, they're all set to continue their mission on a brand-new USS Enterprise after the previous one was destroyed during the movie's events.

star trek beyond trailer grab

It means that the fourth movie can go anywhere. But, for Pine, he believes that whatever the plot is, it shouldn't try to compete with Marvel .

"I've always thought that Star Trek should operate in the zone that is smaller. You know, it's not a Marvel appeal. It's like, let's make the movie for the people that love this group of people, that love this story, that love Star Trek ," he said.

"Let's make it for them and then, if people want to come to the party, great. But make it for a price and make it, so that if it makes a half-billion dollars, that's really good."

star trek beyond chris pine as kirk

You're kidding, right? We'd love to get all timey-wimey ourselves and show you a trailer for Star Trek 4 from the future, but we're stuck in the Mirror Universe.

J.J. Abrams rebooted the "Star Trek" franchise in 2009, and since then, the three films in the new Kelvin timeline have been a smashing success. Altogether, the first "Trek" reboot, 2013's "Star Trek Into Darkness," and 2016's "Star Trek Beyond" have grossed more than a billion dollars at the global box office. They've also done fairly well critically. With all that love, it seems pretty obvious that Hollywood would want to get "Star Trek 4" to theater screens at warp speed.

However, the road to "Star Trek 4" has not been a smooth one. In fact, it's been filled with starts and stops, various creatives coming and going, and a release date that keeps getting beamed all over the place. What do we actually know about the fourth installment of the "Star Trek" reboot series, and what will it look like when it finally makes first contact? Read on for everything we know so far about "Star Trek 4."

What is the release date for Star Trek 4?

"Star Trek 4" has been in the works for a long time ... a really long time. In June 2015, The Hollywood Reporter announced that Chris Pine (Kirk) and Zachary Quinto (Spock) had signed up for "Star Trek 4." But Pine and Chris Hemsworth (who was said to be returning as Kirk's dad) allegedly left a potential fourth project over pay disputes in 2018, and in 2019, it was announced that the film had been shelved. Eventually, the project started moving again and earned a release date of June 9, 2023, but that got kicked back to December 22, 2023 ... before vanishing from the release slate completely.

We have reason to believe "Star Trek 4" is still in the works, however. Speaking with Collider , former director Matt Shakman (who left the project to direct "Fantastic Four") said, "I think what they're still working on is a version of what I have been working on for the time that I was involved." In August 2023, Quinto added his own take on the likelihood of a fourth outing. "I think there's a lot of other stuff, creative things. It's complicated," the actor remarked (via TrekMovie.com ). He continued, "I don't know if and when it will happen ... And if coalesces again and we come back and we're able to do it, wonderful. If not, we had a great run."

In a September 2023 piece on the end of the Writers Guild of America strike, Variety reported that Paramount was looking to polish a "Star Trek 4" script. Another promising nugget of info emerged around this time, when writer-director Lindsey Anderson Beer, who co-wrote a prospective "Star Trek 4" script, told Collider , "It's still on the tracks." So, "Star Trek 4" isn't dead in the water, and with the 2023 Hollywood strikes ended, a major obstacle is gone. But that's pretty much all we know.

What is the plot of Star Trek 4?

At this point, no plot details for the upcoming fourth "Star Trek" movie have been revealed. Some proposed paths forward have been rumored to involve alternate timelines, or even another reboot — especially Tarantino's attempt — but they've all fallen by the wayside. For now, we can probably assume "Star Trek 4" will take place after the events of 2016's "Star Trek Beyond," which was directed by Justin Lin of the  "Fast and Furious" franchise .

In "Star Trek Beyond," Kirk and the crew of the Enterprise see their beloved ship crash on the planet Altamid after an ambush by a pre-Federation human soldier, Idris Elba's Captain Balthazar Edison. When Kirk and the gang discover Edison's plans to use an ancient bioweapon to destroy the Federation, they're forced to stop him — without the help of their ship. That film also explores the death of Leonard Nimoy's Ambassador Spock, as well as relationship troubles between Spock and Uhura.

One story we know "Star Trek 4" won't be exploring is a reunion between Captain Kirk and his father George, courtesy of time travel. Chris Hemsworth briefly played George Kirk in 2009's "Star Trek," but turned down a chance to reprise the role in a bigger story in 2018. "Star Trek 4" also won't tie into any of the current "Star Trek" TV series, like "Star Trek: Strange New Worlds" or "Star Trek: Lower Decks." Those series take place in a universe separate from the Kelvin timeline.

Who is starring in Star Trek 4?

You'd expect a "Star Trek" movie set in the Kelvin timeline to feature the return of the ol' gang, right? Why, yes, you would. However, nothing has been easy about getting "Star Trek 4" off the ground, and that includes bringing back the original cast. In 2018, Chris Pine and Chris Hemsworth reportedly walked away from the project over pay disputes. In February 2022, when producer J.J. Abrams announced that "Star Trek 4" was finally moving ahead, new behind-the-scenes drama erupted. While Abrams said the original stars were returning, none of the actors had officially agreed to the project.

In March 2022, Pine told Variety about his reaction to the "Star Trek 4" announcement: "I think everybody was like, 'Did you hear about this?' We're usually the last people to find out, but I do know we're all excited. Whenever they want to send us a script, we're ready for it." Karl Urban had a similar stance, telling the U.K.'s Radio X (via TrekMovie.com ) in May 2022, "I have heard that it is happening, but I've been hearing that for the last three years ... All I know is they are developing it, they're writing a script, and I know 100% that we all want to come back and do it. So I think it's all just a matter of logistics and timing at this point."

Sofia Boutella — who played Jaylah in "Star Trek Beyond" — also expressed interest in returning, saying (via Fandom Spotlite ), "I would love to see [Jaylah] evolve with all of the guys ... I would do it in a heartbeat." However, Zachary Quinto seems a bit wary of the whole thing. During a November 2022 interview with The Independent , the actor said, "At this point, I honestly have very little attachment to it. All of us would like to come back and make another movie, but I've learnt to only get excited about things I know are actually real. And there's nothing about a fourth 'Star Trek' movie that feels real right now."

Will Star Trek 4 recast Chekov?

One of the most classic and beloved "Star Trek" characters, Pavel Chekov was memorably played in the first three Kelvin timeline movies by Anton Yelchin. Yelchin was killed in a car accident in June 2016, just one month before the release of "Star Trek Beyond." His passing has definitely been felt by both fans and his "Star Trek" cohorts.

In March 2022, when the movie was still moving forward under director Matt Shakman, Uhura actress Zoe Saldaña told Entertainment Tonight about the project. "Obviously, it's bittersweet," she remarked, "because we are coming together for a fourth time and one of us is no longer with us with Anton's passing, but we honestly feel that going back and keeping the 'Star Trek' family together is a way to really keep him alive in our thoughts and our hearts because he was such a fan. And he was such a devoted artist to the craft and also to 'Star Trek.'"

Of course, that particular version of "Star Trek 4" is no longer moving forward, but if you think Saldaña's comments indicate that Paramount won't be recasting the part of Chekov, you're probably right. In a 2016 interview with Postmedia Network , shortly after Yelchin's death, producer J.J. Abrams explained, "I would say there's no replacing him. There's no recasting. I can't possibly imagine that, and I think Anton deserves better."

Granted, emotions were high when Abrams said they wouldn't replace Yelchin. However, there's been no indication in the years since the actor's death that a new Chekov will show up on the bridge of the Enterprise.

Who is directing Star Trek 4?

Perhaps the main reason that "Star Trek 4" hasn't happened yet is that Paramount Pictures is having a difficult time finding a director. For a moment, it looked like Quentin Tarantino was going to boldly go where he'd never gone before. J.J. Abrams was super excited about Tarantino's time-traveling concept of sending Kirk and co.  to a world of 1930s gangsters, similar to the classic "Trek" episode "A Piece of the Action." Screenwriter Mark L. Smith of "The Revenant" fame was set to pen the script, but sadly for Trekkies who wanted to see Spock quoting Ezekiel 25:17, Tarantino's vision never came to pass.

Then, it looked like S.J. Clarkson was going to make history as the first woman to helm a "Star Trek" movie. But after Chris Pine and Chris Hemsworth left the project in 2018, the movie was subsequently shelved. Noah Hawley of "Fargo" fame was also working on a "Star Trek" movie — one that would've been about a brand new group of heroes — but Paramount eventually stepped in and shut things down because it wouldn't have featured the famous Enterprise crew.

The closest that "Star Trek 4" has come to happening was when Matt Shakman took the captain's seat. After he directed the entirety of the smash hit MCU series "WandaVision," the world was Shakman's oyster, and he intended to shepherd the newest entry in the "Star Trek" universe to theater screens. However, Marvel Studios was keen on working with Shakman again, and after director Jon Watts decided to step away from 2025's "Fantastic Four," the folks at Marvel asked Shakman to come back to the MCU — which he did. As a result, at the moment, "Star Trek 4" is floating through space without a captain.

Where to watch the previous Star Trek movies

While we all wait for news about "Star Trek 4," it might be a good time to go back and revisit previous installments in the "Star Trek" reboot series. You can also rent it for $3.99 on Google Play ,  Amazon Prime Video , Apple iTunes , Vudu , and YouTube .

If you're ready for the 2013 sequel where Benedict Cumberbatch definitely doesn't play Khan Noonien Singh, you can stream "Star Trek Into Darkness" on Paramount+ . You can also rent it for $3.99 on Google Play , Apple iTunes , Vudu , and YouTube . Amazon Prime Video offers it for $4.29. 10 star trek characters j.j. abrams introduced to canon.

J.J. Abrams' ambitious and exciting Star Trek Kelvin Timeline movies also introduce several new and vital characters to the movies' canon.

  • J.J. Abrams rebooted Star Trek in 2009 with a new USS Enterprise crew and the creation of the Kelvin Timeline.
  • George Kirk, Winona Kirk, and Jaylah are key characters introduced into the franchise by Abrams.
  • Abrams' Star Trek Kelvin-universe movies prioritize character and crew-based tension, with notable character developments and impactful villains.

Star Trek (2009) introduced the much-loved franchise to a new audience with a successful reboot. Director J.J. Abrams’ initial space-faring feature film launched a new, superbly recast Star Trek: The Original Series crew and introduced the anything-goes alternate Kelvin Timeline. Initially introducing origin stories for the movie’s leading characters, James T. Kirk (Chris Pine) and Spock (Zachary Quinto), a series of unexpected and dramatic events soon leads to the early formation of the young, iconic USS Enterprise crew. As Kirk and Spock, Captain Christopher Pike (Bruce Greenwood), and the crew of the USS Enterprise work to overcome the universe-altering threat, a slew of familiar and new faces make spaces of significance in Federation history .

Over Abrams’ three Kelvin Timeline Star Trek movies, previously established but unseen and newly originated characters are revealed to delight or terrify audiences. The three movies’ villains devastatingly influence Federation history, substantially affecting Star Trek’s established multiverse timeline and posing dangers previously unseen. It’s important to note that Abrams’ films commendably prioritize character and crew-based tension as a primary source of conflict, resulting in subtle yet worthy character developments and heightening the impact and fall-out of each villain’s despicable drive. With a focus on these new and previously unseen faces, here’s a look at ten Star Trek characters J.J. Abrams introduced into canon .

10 J.J. Abrams Star Trek Movie Positives You Only Notice On Rewatch

10 lieutenant george kirk, chris hemsworth - star trek (2009).

Previously unseen in the Star Trek franchise, Lt. George Kirk (Chris Hemsworth) served on the USS Kelvin under the command of Captain Richard Robau (Faran Tahir). George was the youngest First Officer in Starfleet history at the age of 29 – a legacy later advanced by his son, James T. Kirk (youngest captain). Following Nero’s arrival and the subsequent murder of Robau, George Kirk was advanced to the USS Kelvin’s commanding officer. Winona Kirk (Jennifer Morrison), a fellow Kelvin crewmember and pregnant wife to George, is removed to an escaping medical shuttle when George Kirk evacuates the ship in light of Nero’s attack. With the ship’s automatic controls offline, George Kirk opts to remain on board and gives his life, manually pilot the ship into Nero's ship, the Narada, to protect the escaping shuttles.

It’s hard to overstate the significance and influence that George Kirk had on Starfleet history.

George Kirk’s youngest son, James Tiberius Kirk, was born and named moments before George’s death. In Star Trek Beyond , Captain James T. Kirk (Chris Pine) is troubled by his turning a year older than George was when he died, contrasting the reasons they each enlisted in Starfleet. Kirk says, “ He joined because he believed in it. I joined on a dare .” It’s hard to overstate the significance and influence that George Kirk had on Starfleet history, as well impact on the life choices and development of his youngest son. Making the ultimate sacrifice to aid in the survival of others, George Kirk makes a bold and explosive entrance into Star Trek legend.

9 Winona Kirk

Jennifer morrison - star trek (2009).

Winona Kirk (Jennifer Morrison) was the wife of Lt. George Kirk and mother of Captain James T. Kirk (and Jim's older brother George Samuel Kirk ). In 2233, pregnant with James, Winona Kirk, in the final stages of her pregnancy, was evacuated to Medical Shuttle 37 during the Romulan mining vessel Narada’s attack on the USS Kelvin. Advanced to acting Captain, George Kirk ordered the crew’s evacuation and Winona was transferred via wheelchair. The baby was born prematurely during the attack, named “James Tiberius” after his grandfathers, moments before George Kirk piloted the Kelvin into the Narada to protect the escaping shuttles.

Winona Kirk's significant and developing character adds further layers to the Kirk family dynamics.

When Winona returned to Earth as a widow , she settled to raise her young family in Riverside, Iowa. She subsequently returned to working for Starfleet, spending periods off-planet during her sons’ youth. Though Winona’s later relationship with Jim is not (yet) specified, Captain Kirk’s comment to Dr. McCoy (Karl Urban) in Star Trek Beyond that he planned to call her “ on the day ” (his birthday and anniversary of his father’s death) suggests at least a degree of emotional complexity and trauma. In Star Trek (2009), Winona Kirk is seen on-screen for the first time. Winona Kirk’s significant and developing character adds further layers to the Kirk family dynamics and character histories, and the franchise’s rich overall lore.

8 Captain Richard Robeau

Faran tahir - star trek (2009).

Introduced in Star Trek (2009), Captain Richard Robau (Faran Tahir) was the commanding officer of the USS Kelvin . When Nero and the Romulan mining vessel Narada encountered the USS Kelvin following their temporal incursion in 2233, Ayel (Clifton Collins Jr.) instructed Captain Robau to shuttle across for negotiations. With no available options, Robau delegated command of the Kelvin to Lt. George Kirk and boarded the Narada. Questioned, Ayel then demands the current stardate. Infuriated by the knowledge that they had become stranded in the past, Nero murders Captain Robau with a large-bladed weapon and resumes the attack on the USS Kelvin.

Robau is also the first example of a 23rd-century Starfleet Captain Star Trek (2009) introduced as the alternate Kelvin Timeline was created.

Captain Robau’s obvious strength and commitment to his crew and the Federation demonstrate professional versatility and deep respect for those around him. Robau's courage and innate calm accentuate his place in Federation history as the USS Kelvin’s ill-fated commanding officer. Robau is also the first example of a 23rd-century Starfleet Captain Star Trek (2009) introduced as the alternate Kelvin Timeline was created.

7 Nero & Ayel

Eric bana & clifton collins jr. - star trek into darkness.

The Romulan captain and second-in-command crew member of the 24th-century mining ship Narada were directly responsible for the formation of the alternate Kelvin timeline in Star Trek (2009). When a supernova of the system’s sun destroyed Romulus in 2387, Nero (Eric Bana) blamed the Prime-universe Ambassador Spock (Leonard Nimoy) and the Federation for failing to prevent the disaster and sought revenge. Inadvertently pulled into the artificially created red matter black hole designed to counter the supernova, the Narada is pulled into an alternate universe, back in time to 2233, where Nero and his crew soon encounter and attack the USS Kelvin.

Over many years, Nero’s actions resulted in the deaths of many. After Spock Prime’s arrival in the Kelvin timeline , Nero orders an attack on Vulcan – opening a singularity at the planet’s core – and later attempts a similar attack on Earth. By the sheer numbers involved in the “ particularly troubled Romulan ” commander’s genocide of Vulcan, Nero is one of Star Trek ’s most vicious and most significant villains .

Nero destroying the planet Vulcan created one of the most significant divergences between Star Trek 's Kelvin and Prime Timelines.

Ayel, a Romulan miner and second-in-command to Nero, supported Nero and regularly spoke in his stead. Ayel assists in Nero’s destructions , loyal to the captain but not sharing the depth of his need for revenge. Ayel attacks James T. Kirk on several occasions but falls from a high platform after Kirk shoots him with a Romulan disruptor. Nero is later lost when the Narada is ravaged by ignited red matter and pulled into a black hole.

Chris Pine's Star Trek Movies Explained

6 thomas harewood, noel clarke - star trek into darkness.

Noel Clarke stars in Star Trek Into Darkness as Thomas Harewood, a Starfleet officer and a member of the secretive and morally objectionable organization – Section 31. Primarily motivated by his family, Thomas was married to Rima Harewood (Nazneen Contractor) with their ailing and terminally ill daughter Lucille (Anjini Taneja Azhar) suffering in a critical care children’s hospital. Quietly coerced by John Harrison (Benedict Cumberbatch), later revealed to be Khan Noonien Singh, Thomas Harewood agrees to assist in an attack on Starfleet in return for Harrison saving his daughter’s life through a small transfusion of augmented blood.

Harewood's story briefly contemplates the complexities of morality, humanity, and torn allegiances, pitting the horrors of death, compulsion, and destruction against the realities of parental love.

In exchange, Harewood detonates a bomb in the sub-basement of London’s Kelvin Memorial Archive – allowing for a later, more direct attack on high-ranking personnel at Starfleet Command intended to kill Admiral Alexander Marcus (Peter Weller). Prior to detonation, Harewood sends a short transmission to Marcus explaining his actions and that he had acted to save his daughter. Forty-two people, including Thomas Harewood, died in the bombing. Harewood’s story briefly contemplates the complexities of morality, humanity, and torn allegiances, pitting the horrors of death, compulsion, and destruction against the realities of parental love.

5 Admiral Alexander Marcus

Peter weller - star trek into darkess.

Fleet Admiral Alexander Marcus was the head of Starfleet and leader of the secretive Section 31 . Conspiring to create a war with the Klingons, Marcus used the revived and genetically augmented Khan Noonien Singh to develop advanced weaponry and further his aberrant goals. Holding Khan’s fellow Augments hostage later led to the disruption of his schemes when Khan escaped with the other Augments and attacked several Starfleet locations – a Section 31 facility disguised within the Kelvin Memorial Archive in London and an emergency session of high-ranking officials at Starfleet Command.

Marcus was father to Dr. Carol Marcus (Alice Eve) , who had falsified her transfer into the USS Enterprise under the name Dr. Carol Wallace, and mentor to Admiral Christopher Pike (Bruce Greenwood), citing himself as the reason for Pike’s enlistment in Starfleet. Admiral Alexander Marcus’ conniving and cunning were counter to the ideals and responsibilities of his station and resulted in the death of many innocents. Marcus was killed by Khan following a failed attempt to recapture the augment and destroy evidence and witnesses to his illegalities treachery

Peter Weller also appeared as John Frederick Paxton in "Demons" and "Terra Prime" in Star Trek: Enterprise, season four.

Sofia Boutella - Star Trek Beyond

A member of an unknown species, Jaylah teamed up with USS Enterprise Chief Engineer Montgomery “Scotty” Scott (Simon Pegg) following Krall’s attack on the ship – and later worked with the Enterprise command crew to escape the planet and defeat Krall. A survivor of an earlier attack by Krall, her family subsequently killed, Jaylah had lived on Altamid for many years – hidden among the wreckage of the USS Franklin using holographic technology to conceal and defend herself, scavenging for parts and working to restore the ship.

Having learned to speak English from Franklin’s ship records and music library, later used to disrupt the Swarm ships’ cyber-pathic connection with a meaningful song, Jaylah worked through emotional and traumatic memories to provide a rough map of Krall’s base and assist in the rescue of USS Enterprise officers and crewmembers. After the escape, Jaylah joins the crew in celebrating Captain Kirk’s 30th birthday and is offered acceptance into Starfleet Academy . Jaylah’s lone, impressive character is meaningful and bold, hopeful though damaged, showcasing a courageous determination and passion for life and knowledge that echoes Star Trek ’s core ideals .

Jaylah was Inspired by Jennifer Lawrence 's character in Winter's Bone.

3 Krall AKA Captain Balthazar Edison

Idris elba - star trek beyond.

The primary villain in Star Trek Beyond , Krall was formerly a human Starfleet Captain who commanded the USS Franklin in the 22nd century. Initially serving as a MACO (Military Assault Command Operations) during the Xindi and Romulan Wars, Captain Balthazar Edison was left stranded on the planet Altamid after the USS Franklin crash-landed. Using alien energy transference technology found on the planet, Edison mutated himself into alien form to prolong his life and take on new abilities. Edison objected to the ideals of peace, tolerance, and unity that the Federation was founded on and, as Krall, sought to destroy it.

Krall was ultimately defeated by Captain Kirk, consumed by the Abronath, and sucked into open space.

Captain Balthazar Edison transformed into Krall , his frustration with the Federation amplifying into active hate and a belief that unity was a weakness. Krall made use of other technologies on the planet, too, learning about and searching for the Abronath – a powerful weapon, split into two pieces – later learning that the missing half was onboard the USS Enterprise. Sending Kalara to lure the Enterprise to Altamid, Krall used his Swarm drone to “ cut their throats ” and devastated the ship. Later locating the missing Abronath artifact, Krall launched an attack to destroy all life on the new Starbase Yorktown . Krall was ultimately defeated by Captain Kirk, consumed by the Abronath, and sucked into open space.

Chris Pine’s Star Trek Movies Ranked Worst To Best

2 kalara aka jessica wolfe, lydia wilson - star trek beyond.

At Starbase Yorktown, Kalara arrives in an escape pod and explains that her ship and crew are stranded on the planet Altamid in a nearby nebula. She requests aid to rescue them, and the USS Enterprise is assigned. As Captain Kirk and the Enterprise crew set course, Kalara helps lure them into a carefully orchestrated trap. Formerly a human Starfleet officer serving as a scientist on the 22nd-century USS Franklin , Jessica Wolff was stranded with Captain Balthazar Edison and the USS Franklin crew when a wormhole led to a crash landing. Among the few survivors, Wolff used an energy transference technology found on the planet to artificially prolong her life, transform her appearance, and renamed herself Kalara.

Mutated over time by the energy transference into an alien form, Kalara joined Captain Kirk and Ensign Pavel Chekov (Anton Yelchin) on the planet’s surface after the devastating attack on the Enterprise. When Kirk soon suspects her of dishonesty and involvement in the attack, Kalara is tricked into messaging Krall – exposing her true intentions and Krall’s location at the same time. Duplicitous and deadly, Kalara is subsequently killed in the ensuing fight between Kirk and Chekov and members of Krall’s Swarm , crushed when the Enterprise’s wrecked saucer section is overturned.

1 Commodore Paris

Shohreh aghdashloo - star trek beyond.

Star Trek Beyond introduces Commodore Paris (Shohreh Aghdashloo) as the commanding officer of Starfleet’s newest and most impressive Starbase , Yorktown. Kindly and wise, Commodore Paris is understanding of Captain Kirk’s uncharacteristic uncertainty regarding his future when he applies for promotion to a Vice-Admiral position at Paris’ Yorktown, ultimately offering him the role upon his return from the disastrous rescue mission to Altamid.

Commodore Paris is professional and warm, providing subtle yet valuable insight and advice, occupying an influential position of power and respect that accentuates her moral capability.

With Captain Kirk, Commodore Paris receives a request for assistance from the unexpected Kalara – her ship and crew apparently stranded on the planet in a nearby nebula. Upon Kirk’s return, Paris closes the long-pondered files on Captain Balthazar Edison and the crew of the USS Franklin and commends Kirk and his crew for their actions surrounding the attack on Yorktown.

Kirk declines the promotion in favor of commanding the new USS Enterprise-A, explaining that “ Vice Admirals don’t fly .” After the negative impression left by Admiral Marcus, Commodore Paris is professional and warm , providing subtle yet valuable insight and advice, occupying an influential position of power and respect in J.J. Abrams' Star Trek movies that accentuates her moral capability, experience, and charming merit.

Star Trek (2009), Star Trek Into Darkness, and Star Trek Beyond are available for streaming on Paramount+.

Star Trek (2009)

J.J. Abrams' 2009 movie Star Trek rebooted the iconic sci-fi franchise in a totally new timeline. When a Romulan ship travels back in time and alters the past, the lives of James T. Kirk (Chris Pine), Spock (Zachary Quinto), and the future crew of the USS Enterprise are drastically changed. In this new timeline, the Romulan Nero (Eric Bana) sets out for revenge on Spock, setting off a chain of events that reshape the entire universe.

Star Trek Into Darkness

Star Trek Into Darkness is a 2013 movie directed by     J. J. Abrams and starring John Cho, Alice Eve, and Benedict Cumberbatch. Part of the Star Trek franchise, this sequel sees Captain Kirk relieved of his duties as commander of the USS Enterprise.

Star Trek Beyond

In the Kelvin timeline of Star Trek Films, Captain James Tiberius Kirk, Spock, and the rest of the U.S.S. Enterprise crew return to fight a new enemy who puts everything they and the Federation stand for to the ultimate test. This third installment of the rebooted Star Trek films marked the 50th anniversary of the classic sci-fi franchise.

New Star Trek Movie with the J.J. Abrams Cast In the Works

It's currently unclear if chekov will be recast..

Joseph Knoop Avatar

A new Star Trek movie starring the original J.J. Abrams trilogy cast is in the works, Deadline reports.

Paramount has reportedly begun talks with Chris Pine to return as James T. Kirk, Zachary Quinto as Spock, Zoe Saldana as Lieutenant Uhura, Karl Urban as Bones, John Cho as Sulu, and Simon Pegg as Scotty. Filming is scheduled to start in late 2022 under the direction of Matt Shakman, director of Disney Plus' WandaVision, FX's It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia, and HBO's Game of Thrones. Abrams will return as producer.

Shakman can also boast a total of 23 Emmy nominations for his work on WandaVision .

Writing a script draft under the supervision of Shakman is Josh Friedman (Avatar 2) and Cameron Squires (WandaVision), based on a prior draft by Lindsey Beer and Geneva Robertson-Dworet (Captain Marvel).

J.J. Abrams verified the existence of the new Star Trek film during Tuesday's ViacomCBS Investor Day presentation.

Sources told Variety that bringing back the original cast was a high priority, made all the more complicated by each actors' rising star power. Pine has since worked on both Wonder Woman movies, while Zoe Saldana continues as Gamora in Guardians of the Galaxy and Neytiri in Avatar 2. Karl Urban will continue his role as Billy Butcher in season 3 of Amazon's The Boys, Simon Pegg is reprising his role as Benji in both Mission Impossible sequels, John Cho recently starred as Spike Spiegel in Netflix's live-action Cowboy Bebop adaptation, and Zachary Quinto starred in AMC's NOS4A2 series.

Plot details are, as expected, being kept tightly under wraps; the original concept for the fourth Star Trek was for Captain Kirk to contend with the legacy of his own father, who heroically sacrificed himself aboard the USS Kelvin in a battle with a Romulan who had crossed through time.

It's currently unclear if Paramount plans to recast the part of Pavel Chekov. The role was previously played by Anton Yelchin, who died in a tragic automobile incident at his Los Angeles home in June 2016, at age 27, a mere month before Star Trek Beyond released in theaters.

Upcoming Star Trek TV Shows: What's Ahead For The Sci-Fi Franchise

Here's what's ahead for Star Trek.

Michael Burnham on Star Trek: Discovery

It’s a golden era for Star Trek tv shows, as the franchise is churning out more content than ever before. Fans with a Paramount+ subscription can stream a plethora of old and new content from one of the greatest sci-fi franchises of all time.

There’s a ton of new Star Trek content coming in the future, including the debut of a new show as well as the return of all the ones fans already know well. For those who need a breakdown of what all to expect, look no further because here’s where and when all the new Trek will arrive in 2023 and beyond. There’s even some information on planned shows that aren’t quite ready yet, but hopefully, we’ll see them soon enough.

Star Trek: Discovery Season 5 - Premiering On April 4th 2024

Captain Michael Burnham and the crew are back, and based on what we've seen and heard about Star Trek: Discovery Season 5 so far, some changes are on the way. Season 5 will see the crew race against others in an attempt to secure an ancient power, and will apparently have a tonal shift that will skew more toward action and adventure. We also learned that this coming season will be the final adventure , as Paramount+ decided to end the series after this coming season. The final season will kick off in April and, fingers crossed, leave an avenue open for more stories with these characters in the 32nd century.

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Season 3 - In Production

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds is coming back for Season 3, and is currently filming for the upcoming season. It's likely the season will kick off with the second part of the adventure started in the Season 2 finale . Pike must decide whether or not he's going to listen to Starfleet and retreat to avoid further conflict with the Gorn or to stay and try to save the kidnapped crew members. I have a hunch I know what decision he'll make, but I'm also very invested in seeing if Scotty will remain with the crew and what other adventures will come as well.

Star Trek: Prodigy Season 2 - Coming In 2024

Paramount+ originally renewed Star Trek: Prodigy for Season 2, but announced later that it had been canceled alongside other shows on the platform. While the news was a bummer to many and encouraged responses from stars like Kate Mulgrew , there is a silver lining. After some talk with other companies, Paramount managed to negotiate a deal where the series will transition over to Netflix , and Season 2 will release over there. At this time, it's unknown whether or not this will lead to more seasons of Prodigy , but fans are thankful they'll at least get to see the season that was being worked on coming up in 2024.

Section 31 Movie - Production Underway

Section 31 was one of the first Star Trek spinoffs announced after Discovery , and yet it took the longest to get off the ground. The series was supposed to Michelle Yeoh ’s Phillipa Georgiou and her efforts in the secret ops Starfleet faction that does the jobs that others in the organization would rather not know about. Other former Discovery stars, like Shazad Latif, were involved at one point, but some believed the odds of it happening aren't great after Michelle Yeoh's Oscar win .

It turns out Yeoh was interested in making it happen, and Paramount+ decided to alter the idea to a movie . Fans are excited about the project all the same, and ready to see Michelle Yeoh back in her role. Production on the film is officially underway, and it's looking like a premiere sometime in late 2024 to 2025 is likely.

Starfleet Academy - Production Starting In 2024

Alex Kurtzman revealed not long ago that Star Trek is actively working on another new live-action series , and it’s going to be set at Starfleet Academy. Of course, we don’t know exactly what era this series is set to take place during or who is going to star in it yet. We don’t really know much of anything, though it’s worth noting that Star Trek: Discovery did write off its character Tilly when she took an offer at Starfleet Academy. The episode where that happened seemed like it could be a backdoor pilot for the show, but again, we have no idea. We do know that the writer's room is underway, but details are scant beyond that.

As shown above, there’s still a ton of Star Trek on the way in 2024, and beyond. The only way to watch these shows is with a Paramount+ subscription , which is totally worth picking up with the increasing amount of shows and movies available to watch.

When writing about a legend who’s still working as a nonagenarian, it’s almost obligatory to include a line about how they are seemingly busier than ever. William Shatner , 92, may no longer be on set 12 hours a day for the roles that made him the first Comic-Con celebrity ( Star Trek ), or that transformed him into a late-career regular at the Emmys podium ( The Practice , Boston Legal ), but it’s difficult not to marvel at the pace at which he lives his life.

Kenneth mitchell, 'star trek: discovery' actor, dies at 49, "i got a little blood on me": a makeup artist legend looks back on 'rocky' and 'star trek'.

Now, Shatner is the subject of the crowdfunded documentary You Can Call Me Bill (in select theaters March 22, his 93rd birthday), a meditation on his life, career and mortality.

The Montreal-born actor began performing at the age of 6 at camp and never stopped, transitioning from Canadian radio dramas to Broadway to 1950s TV Westerns. He’s been an omnipresent pop culture fixture since 1966, when he was cast as Captain James T. Kirk in Star Trek under unusual circumstances never seen again in Hollywood. NBC had a pilot that didn’t work, but the network wanted to try again with a mostly new cast. Where the original pilot was a somewhat dry affair, Shatner brought much-needed humor to the Enterprise.

Though the show was canceled after just three seasons, it earned a cult following in syndication, and Shatner reprised the role for seven feature films.

His comedic chops led him to the Saturday Night Live stage — 38 years later, people still ask him about a sketch in which he mocked Star Trek fans with the exasperated line “Get a life!” — as well as multiple Emmy wins playing lawyer Denny Crane on David E. Kelley’s ABC procedural The Practice and then Boston Legal , which concluded after four years in 2008. And he has penned books, released albums and directed documentaries.

During a Zoom conversation in early March, Shatner discussed why Star Trek V: The Final Frontier , his first and only theatrical feature as a director, was the biggest regret of his career; that history-making Star Trek kiss with Nichelle Nichols; and what could lure him back to the captain’s chair.

Some say acting is a way to find the love they aren’t getting elsewhere. Was that true for you?

I’m sure it’s true. I spent a very lonely life in my younger years. Being able to join a cast and be a part of a group of people, I’m sure that was an element in my starting to be an actor when I was very young.

Though you acted throughout childhood, you got a practical degree, a bachelor of commerce, from McGill University in Montreal. Was the plan to use that degree?

But as an actor, you do have some control, right? You understudied for Christopher Plummer on Henry V in 1956, and he once said, “Where I stood up to make a speech, he sat down. He did the opposite of everything I did.”

I had no rehearsal. I didn’t know the people. And it was five days into the opening of the show [when Plummer got sick]. The choreography was one of the other things that I didn’t know. I was in a macabre state of mind. So that had nothing to do with “I stood where he sat.” [It was, rather], “I’ve got to move around the stage somewhere. I think I’ll sit down here, I’m exhausted!”

You worked with director Richard Donner on the classic Twilight Zone episode “Nightmare at 20,000 Feet,” which was in fact a nightmare for him, as it was technically complicated and the shooting days were halved. Did you sense the pressure he was under?

It’s complicated. When you get those science fiction choices: The guy is dressed in a furry little suit and you say, “Well, why isn’t the suit aerodynamic? Why is it a suit that’ll catch every breeze that blows?” What kind of logic do you use in any science fiction case? When I looked at the acrobat [Nick Cravat, who played a gremlin terrorizing Shatner’s character from the wing of a plane], I said to myself, “That isn’t something you’d wear on the wing of a 747,” but then again, what do you wear on the wing of a 747? So yeah, it was complicated in that way.

He was in the military, and he was a policeman. So there was this militaristic vision of “You don’t make out with a fellow soldier.” There are strict rules and you abide by the rules. Around that, [the writers] had to write the drama. But within that was the discipline of “This is the way a ship works.” Well, as Star Trek progressed, that ethos has been forgotten [in more recent shows]. I sometimes laugh and talk about the fact that I think Gene is twirling in his grave. “No, no, you can’t make out with the lady soldier!”

The writers of Star Trek: The Next Generation butted heads with Gene when he was alive.

The fights that went on, to my understanding, were big, because the writers had their difficulties. “We need some more material.” “We need to get out of here. It’s claustrophobic.”

When you joke that Gene is twirling in his grave, you mean he wouldn’t approve of onscreen romances between crewmates on the later shows?

Yes, exactly. I haven’t watched the other Star Trek s very much, but what I’ve seen with glimpses of the Next Generation is yes, the difficulty in the beginning, between management, was all about Gene’s rules and obeying or not obeying those rules.

You and Nichelle Nichols are credited with the first interracial kiss on TV. Is it true that you pushed to make every take real, despite the network asking for faked takes so they would have the option?

After three seasons, NBC cancels Star Trek in 1969, and you find yourself broke, doing summer stock theater on the East Coast. Did you think acting might be over at that point?

I’m broke, living in a truck, sleeping in the back and trying to save that money so I could support my three kids and my [ex-]wife, who were living in Beverly Hills. The only thing that ever occurred to me was, “I can always go back to Toronto and make something of a living as an actor there.” I never thought, “Oh, I’ve got to become a salesman.” It never occurred to me from the age of 6 to do anything else. Which is weird because [today] I hear it all around me: “God, I can’t make a living anymore [as an actor].” And that’s true. People with names can’t make a living under the circumstances that the business has fallen into.

In 1979, Paramount needed an answer to Star Wars , so it revived Trek in the form of movies. Then T.J. Hooker came along a few years later. What did you get out of the show?

It was a terrific show. It had all kinds of drama. I got to direct several of the episodes. And some of my shots are in the opening. I was totally involved, committed to the writing, committed to the directing. You’re running all the time. You’ve got to make decisions and you don’t have enough money.

I wish that I’d had the backing and the courage to do the things I felt I needed to do. My concept was, “ Star Trek goes in search of God,” and management said, “Well, who’s God? We’ll alienate the nonbeliever, so, no, we can’t do God.” And then somebody said, “What about an alien who thinks they’re God?” Then it was a series of my inabilities to deal with the management and the budget. I failed. In my mind, I failed horribly. When I’m asked, “What do you regret the most?,” I regret not being equipped emotionally to deal with a large motion picture. So in the absence of my power, the power vacuum filled with people that didn’t make the decisions I would’ve made.

You seem to take the blame, but outside observers might say, “Well, the budget wasn’t there. You didn’t get the backing you needed.” But in your mind, it’s on you.

Paramount+ is rumored to have tossed around ideas for you to reprise your role, à la Patrick Stewart in Star Trek: Picard . Is that something you would entertain?

Leonard [Nimoy] made his own decision on doing a cameo [in J.J. Abrams’ 2009 Star Trek ]. He’s there for a moment, and it’s more a stunt that Spock appears in a future. If they wrote something that wasn’t a stunt that involved Kirk, who’s 50 years older now, and it was something that was genuinely added to the lore of Star Trek , I would definitely consider it.

Did hosting SNL feel like a breakthrough, in terms of showing what you could do with comedy?

That was a new show then, it was a big sensation, and hosting it was good. They really wrote comedy for me. I played comedy since I was 7. There is a timing. There is a way of characterizing a line. It’s a kind of spiritual thing playing comedy, letting the audience know they’re open to laugh.

After decades in the industry, you achieved your greatest critical success in your 70s playing Denny Crane on Boston Legal . What was the genesis of Denny?

In 2021, at age 90, you became the oldest person to go to space. Upon landing, you had a tearful exchange with Jeff Bezos. How have you processed that?

I was weeping uncontrollably for reasons I didn’t know. It was my fear of what’s happening to Earth. I could see how small it was. It’s a rock with paper-thin air. You’ve got rock and 2 miles of air, and that’s all that we have, and we’re fucking it up. And, that dramatically, I saw it in that moment.

What are your thoughts on legacy?

At Mar-a-Lago, I was asked to help raise funds with the Red Cross. I had to be at Mar-a-Lago Saturday night, and Leonard’s funeral was Sunday morning. I couldn’t make both. I chose the charity. It just occurred to me: Leonard died. They got a statue up. It’s not going to last. Say it lasts 50 years, 100. [Someone will say], “Who is that Leonard Nimoy? Tear the statue down, put somebody else up.” But what you can’t erase is helping somebody or something. That has its own energy and reverberation. That person got help — and then is able to help somebody else. You’ve continued an action that has no boundaries. That’s what a good deed does

Report: ‘Section 31’ To Be The First Of Series Of Star Trek Movies For Paramount+

star trek movie news

| April 19, 2023 | By: Anthony Pascale 105 comments so far

Yesterday, Paramount+ finally officially announced a greenlight for Star Trek: Section 31 , a project that was first revealed to be in development over four years ago. Originally conceived as a series, the project has now transformed into a “special original movie event,” and it appears this may be the first of a new phase of Star Trek original content for Paramount+.

More Star Trek movies for Paramount+

According to The Hollywood Reporter , Star Trek: Section 31 is the start of “‘Star Trek’ Phase 2 at Paramount+.”  The trade reports that the Section 31 project began its transition into a film last summer at least partially because of concerns about “oversaturating” Star Trek on the platform. From the report:

Between Yeoh’s schedule, fears of having too many shows going on at the same time in the franchise and a desire to enter the feature film event space, a decision was made to shift  Section 31  into a movie.

And according to THR sources, Section 31 will be the first of a series of Star Trek movie events for the streamer:

Section 31 is being envisioned as Mission: Impossible meets Guardians of the Galaxy , which with the big scope of both films would make doing a weekly series a larger challenge. The plan, sources note, is for Kurtzman and company to do a Star Trek made-for-streaming movie every two years for Paramount+.

As of now, Paramount+ has committed to two live-action Star Trek series ( Strange New Worlds and Starfleet Academy ) and two animated series ( Lower Decks and Prodigy ) with orders for additional seasons likely to provide content through 2024, and perhaps into 2025. The Section 31 movie is set to go into production later this year, which could allow for a release as early as late 2024. There is no indication now if Paramount+ will continue to commit to 4 ongoing Star Trek series once this new phase of Star Trek TV movies starts.

What comes after Section 31 ?

There isn’t any indication yet of what the next movie could be in this new phase. It could simply be a sequel to the first Section 31 film with Michelle Yeoh’s Georgiou. Earlier this year Alex Kurtzman, who oversees the Star Trek franchise for Paramount+, hinted about doing limited series and movies, and he suggested they could focus on other individual characters:

By the way, even individual characters – I think we could absolutely continue to tell stories about individual characters that are set up on the show in other contexts. That’s the beauty of having a universe now is that, in a perfect world, we’re not just doing seasons of television, we’re doing event series [miniseries], we’re doing single events that could be two, three hours long [TV movies]. I think that we are now at a place where that’s really possible.

With Paramount+ both focusing on cutting costs and concerned about “oversaturating,” it’s possible this idea of limited events could provide a vehicle for a Star Trek: Picard spinoff, or maybe even work as a backdoor pilot for showrunner Terry Matalas’ vision of a new Star Trek: Legacy series . And there is no reason to limit things to live action; in 2021 Kurtzman suggested the idea of a theatrical film based on Star Trek: Prodigy , but that idea could also work as a streaming movie.

Of course, all of this talk about Paramount+ moving forward with its own slate of Star Trek movies can get complicated once Paramount Pictures sorts out its plans for the film franchise. When he took over the studio, CEO Brian Robbins said bringing Trek back to the big screen was a priority for Paramount, with the goal of releasing multiple Trek movies . Robbins has had the job for well over a year now, and the studio has still not been able to get a project past the development phase, with the last release being 2016’s Star Trek Beyond .

Phase 2 movies (in theory)

S31 (2024) ST4 kelvin/prime multiverse movie (2026/60th ann) Enterprise (2028) Khan (2030)

Khan again? is that then the 3rd time using him or is it more to give Star Trek an “bad Guy”?

I don’t want to see khan again

Yeah you do

No I don’t lol. I do not get the fascination people have with this guy? Love the character overall, but I don’t need another lunatic dictator starring in their own film. We now have Georgiou for that.

Plus we already knows how his story ends, a reason why it’s hard for me to be excited about prequels, especially with characters whose history has already been told.

Well, I get where you are coming from, but I think a focus on the Eugenics Wars that might include Khan could be interesting.

That would be the 4th time, homeboy.

I cannot fathom a situation where a Kelvinverse movie gets consigned to Paramount+.

I don’t see any reason to wait two years between movies.

Here’s my suggestion…

Section 31 (2024) The House of Worf (2025, Worf, Raffi, Martok, etc.) Star Trek: Federation (2026, President Archer) Eugenics Wars: Rise and Fall of Khan (2027) Excelsior/Enterprise-B adventure post-Generations (2028)

Let’s jump right to the E-B/Exc era now while I’m still viable to appreciate it (or sell them my decades-old treatment.)

You know there will have to be a live-action Janeway vehicle of some some kind in there.

In fact, my money is on that being next up after S31. . . Perhaps as a 6-episode limited/mini series rather than a movie.

I still think there will be a Legacy series, and Admiral Janeway will probably be recurring on that.

Kelvin/multiverse would be waaayy to expensive. Personally, I see a Khan movie as an unnecessary retread, but I can see how the suits at Paramount could view Khan as being on the same “evergreen villain everyone knows” stratum as the Joker.

No, I just Khan’t.

As I recall, a made-for-TV movie was one of the ideas floated as a way to bring back Star Trek in the 1970s. Echoes of history.

One of these could turn into a theatrical release if Paramount thinks they’ve got a hit (see “Smile” most recently).

Yeah. Star Trek Ii was ordinally set to be a tv movie, but was converted to a feature sometime during the latter stages of preproduction. Fact Trek posted a memo from early fall 1981 setting out how much more everyone would have to be paid now that it was a feature instead of a tv show.

Bet Shatner and Co were chuffed to get paid movie money again!

It’s an interesting read as it shows what certain people were to be paid for the “TV M.O.W.” vs. a feature. Interesting to note that “Nick Meyer” (as he’s referred to in the memo) was already onboard as director for the TV movie with a fee of $125,000. That doubled to $250K for the feature. Leonard Nimoy was to be paid $60K for the TV movie but his feature pay is simply listed as “?”. The biggest pay jump belonged to Harve Bennett, who saw his take jump from $40K to all the way to $200K.

“Smile” was produced for $17 million (which is probably what Section 31 will come in at). Anything produced for Paramount+ is produced at a loss but “Smile” was likely seen as easy money. Not being tied to a franchise, there was really no risk in a theatrical release.Star Trek is an entirely different beast

True, an inexpensive horror film can be a box office lay-up, versus a Star Trek movie about a character with three TV seasons worth of backstory.

Exactly. That won’t attract a casual viewer or broader audience.

$17 million is about what 2 Discovery episodes cost before COVID escalated production costs.

My bet is that they are willing to drop up to $50 million on S31.

This is a prestige event movie that can be expected to garnish a high Q. It’s already getting mainstream profile from CNN, USA Today and the LA times.

They can also recoup a bit through gate with a limited global release.

My number is based on the calibre of the principal actor, and Paramount’s willingness to pay $23 million per episode of 1923. Don’t think that Yeoh will accept her project getting less.

I think Star Trek Legacy would be better as a series of tv movies instead of a show. They could also do one with some of the Enterprise cast and tell the story of the Earth/Romulan war.

Star Trek The Beginning

Yes, I’d rather see movies and miniseries focused on the various legacy characters and settings than bend a ship-based show into a nostalgia tour.

That said, if Paramount is willing to ALSO give us a ship-based 25th Century Titan show with Shaw, Seven, the Laforges, and cadet Kestra, I’d be delighted.

Just want them out looking further across the galaxy for more weird and challenging. SNW is only ten episodes a season. There’s room for two ship-based shows in different eras.

Just cancel the wretched Starfleet Academy concept already and give Terry Matalas all the money and freedom he wants to keep making amazing Star Trek.

Could do Harve Bennetts alt Trek VI Starfleet Academy as a P+ movie instead

I concur completely WTF Captain. Full spread of Quantum Torpedos and Phasers onto ‘Starfleet Academy’. This is an insidious plot by the niave and clueless Borg that have taken over Star Trek, Star Trek ‘Legacy’ (Terry Matalas) is the future and hope for Trek.

Secret Hideout hired Matalas to finish up their contractual obligation of a third season of Picard and Paramount pays Secret Hideout to manage Star Trek for them.

Matalas was already on board in season 2 and though three seasons had been announced, it’s never really a guarantee.

Oh right. I keep forgetting that he is responsible for one of the worst seasons of TV made this century. In any case, he was a work for hire and Alex Kurtzman is not going to let some subcontractor steal his thunder.

Fans want more Terry Trek. No one really cares about the CW Academy show.

Speak for yourself.

I want to see more of the gorgeous 32nd century. And if Kovich is recurrently involved in that Academy, I’ll be glued to the screen.

More to the point, Picard season three is good, but I am in a large company of fans who wouldn’t put it above SNW, Prodigy or Lower Decks.

As a die-hard 12 Monkeys fan, who was a Matalas booster long before many of the ‘Terry Trek’ crowd knew his name, I can’t believe I am the one coming here to say ‘please stop!’ with this stuff. We don’t need a divisive fan-campaigns for a change in franchise leadership.

Fan enough man but let’s not kid ourselves, most fans want more 25th century Trek. If you like Discovery then you are probably interested in the 32nd century stuff but from I’m reading that seems to be in a minority.

And bro, one last time, I’m discussing one show for Terry to run,I don’t want LDS or SNW replaced. Maybe some do but not me, OK? 👍

I think Kurtzman is a hack but I’m not trying to get him replaced either. Just keep hitting more people like Matalas and McMahan and the Hageman brothers, that’s all.

Oops I meant hiring not hitting. Stupid autocorrect. 😆

I think this is the problem. When some people say ‘Terry Trek’ all they mean is they just want another spin off show for him to run. But others seem imply they want Kurtzman fired and he’s the new honcho to replace him.

I think for people who generally like NuTrek, they are obviously not saying that. It’s the old bitter fanboys that has hated everything since 2009 or at least since 2017. Most people here are not that bitter lol. Yes people hate certain shows and some question Kurtzman’s ‘vision’ but most people here at least are not suggesting Matalas take over the whole thing.

And I don’t even think Matalas wants that job lol. He has only worked on shows one at a time. That’s why his resume is pretty thin, he’s not trying to be a JJ Abrams and has his hands in 10 different pots. He seems to just work on the show he’s hired for and when that ends, he moves on. I don’t think he wants to be responsible for overseeing the next half dozen Trek shows, it’s just his fans who want him too. So no one has to even worry or care about that.

Right. But I do plan to from-here-forward, keep track of his work. I never watched the 13 Monkeys series, just the film, but I plan to.

I’d be happy if he were more of a Dave Filoni for Star Trek the way Filoni is for Star Wars.

Started in animation (Clone Wars/Rebels), moved to live action, now moving into feature films. All the projects have A+ casting and scripts that keep you guessing, with only well-placed moments of fan service – by focusing on people that aren’t from the Skywalker Saga we don’t know how their stories are going to go, yet the stories are interlaced (not always tightly, but they rarely drop a thread).

That’s why it’s interesting for the new P+ Trek era to focus less on prequels with characters we know, but to show us characters we *get* to know, against the backdrop of eras we know the broad outlines of.

Like, it probably won’t be as good, but if S31 is half as good as Andor, I’d be pleased.

I actually don’t mind the Academy show, but it’s really not a contest what most fans want which is the Legacy show. I do think we’ll get it and hopefully with Matalas making it, I just don’t think it will be right away.

…the one thing on the side of the legacy show fans is the actors aren’t getting any younger, which may work out. Sooner the better. Michael Dorn’s work this season really knocked my socks off, what a treat. As well as LeVar Burton. Never, imo, was LaForge so well played.

Maybe both actors just properly grew into their roles. Either way, whatever happens tomorrow (finale and beyond), this was a great ride.

Well after seeing the finale I don’t think it will be a big deal. It did promise what everyone was saying and it will be more about the next next generation. But sure I know they will definitely get some reccuring TNG characters there.to pop up if it happens.

This is completely plausible. Academy could easy go the wayside like the Section 31 series. Until it’s being made, there is no assurance which way it might go.

Also, Starfleet Academy could easily be set in 2402 after the events in Picard Season 3. With picking up the pieces, it would make sense that they could have to be really increase Starfleet Academy enrollment and Shaw & Seven could be instructors on the Titan.

I dread an Academy series, but I hate a Legacy series even more. How lazy, safe uncreative and unimaginative!

Once every two years is a pretty laid-back schedule. I wonder if they’ll spend as much on these as Netflix has in the past ( Red Notice cost a reported $200mm). I kind of doubt it, but a two year release schedule implies that these are not going to low-budget, crank-’em-out fare either.

Probably no $200 million. If Paramount had that kind of money to spare we’d be having a forth theatrical movie. On the other hand, unless they rely heavily on existing assets from SNW, Discovery or the new Academy show or go really small in scope (which doesn’t mesh with the “event movie” description), a 2-hour streaming movie would probably not be cheaper than a season of a show. There are just a lot of setup costs involved in establishing that future world. The Star Trek Voyager pilot reportedly cost $23 million back at the time. That would correspond to about $47 million today. Normally, these costs are “spread out” on a TV show because the sets, props, costumes etc. can be reused over the course of the show. But if they do stand-alone streaming movies that would be one-time investments.

I would expect this movie to be in the $60-$80MM range, but I’m just spitballing with no real insight.

They’ll utilize assets from SNW and Discovery and will probably bring this in for the cost of two episodes. The infrastructure is already in place to keep costs down.

One thing to keep in mind is that CBS Studios is building its own base of physical soundstage sets, props and vfx sets in Mississauga/Toronto.

This is creating a Trek production complex where there is potential to redress and amortize over more than one movie or miniseries.

EPs Siracusa and Weber persuaded CBS Studios back in 2018 that it was better to have their own soundstages than lease, and by 2019 the conversion project to turn warehouses into 6 soundstages was done. They also have priority on long term access and use of the Pixmodo / WH White AR wall.

With Discovery wound up, the production in Ontario will be in based on CBS’ own staging. It sounds like, with the additional tax advantages of owning their own facilities, if they need expansion, it will happen.

Figure something in the neighborhood of the cost of two episodes since, for all intents and purposes, these films will likely be filmed like extended episodes of the series. The two year release schedule is probably what works within what Paramount is willing to budget.

Yeah that’s probably closer to reality. It’s probably more in the neighborhood of $20 million than $50 million. I don’t really care how much it cost of course and as all the live action shows prove, your money just go a much longer way on a TV screen than a movie screen. SNW honestly feels like a big budget movie to me but I know they cut a lot of corners by keeping episodes mostly ship based like Picard has been doing. Still, they look great.

On it’s face, this is a sound plan, and I think a win for us fans. If they focus on certain characters/crews Paramount can gauge interest for future series, and as fans we get a variety of films to pick from. Even if it’s a character/topic/era that doesn’t appeal, it’s just a two hour movie and God knows I’ve managed to sit through enough bad movies in my life. I just hope they’re well written. Interested to see what they come up with.

Remember when Bryan Fuller wanted to make Star Trek: Discovery an anthology that explored multiple eras throughout the history of the franchise?

The last five years were that, but with extra steps, lol.

While I like the way things turned out with Discovery, Picard, Strange New Worlds, Lower Decks and Prodigy and how they are unfolding with Academy and Section 31, if Fuller and CBS had only agreed that the best plan was to expand beyond one series rather than limit them to a single anthology he would still be around and not have been fired.

Fuller was fired for failing to come in on time and on budget and clashing with the studio, something he already had a history of doing. Smart, talented man but not the best guy to be running the day-to-day.

I feel bad for saying this, but I’m glad Fuller was fired seeing what we got with DIS. And Denny C has said it, it wasn’t for creative reasons, he was doing too much already and the show kept getting delayed because he wasn’t around and the show was going over budget.

Michelle Yeoh’s Phillipa Geourgiou was my favorite Discovery character. Yes, I like Michelle Sonequa Greene’s Burnham and Doug Jones’ Saru, and David Ajala’s Book. Greene is a great actress and brings the save strong emotion and strength to Burnham that she did with her Walking Dead character. Doug Jones has brought so many crazy, alien, characters to life that he is a total pro and I first noticed Ajala on Supergirl. Yeah, I like those characters, but I loved Empress Georgiou. So I’m onboard with this Section 31 film. But, unlike all the previous ST films, this one isn’t about a ship’s crew of good guys trying to do the right thing. This is a black ops film of not so good guys doing unethical things for the greater good. That makes it far different from any ST film before it.

I would’ve hoped that the first ST film from the new Kurtzmann-led production would be something more in the traditional ST model with more established characters and that bums me out a biit. There’s still no ST 4 with Pine, Quinto, Urban and the rest and that saddens me.

If you’re a fan of David Ajala, you should check out ‘Nightflyers’ on Netflix if you haven’t already. I will warn that it was cancelled after one season so the cliffhanger ending is very unsatisfying but I loved the look and feel of that show, I wanted more and was very sad it was cancelled.

Georgiou was my favorite character too! I love the idea of a black ops film rather than the typical good guys trying to do the right thing — that’s the thing with Georgiou that I find really intriguing, she may not be a great person and she is definitely capable of doing very unethical things, but she’s very intelligent and she’s also more capable of securing the Federation’s values than the other characters on Discovery.

Now, whether or not she cares about the Federation’s values is one thing, but she’s capable of getting the results she wants, she knows how to navigate politics and warfare, she also knows how diplomacy works (she was the Emperor of the Terran Empire, and we also saw her dealing with the Federation higher-ups when she was part of Section 31) — Prime Georgiou, Michael, Cornwell, and the majority of the Discovery crew may want peace, but that doesn’t mean they know how to get it.

This is a black ops film of not so good guys doing unethical things for the greater good.

So, we’re better off having done Guanatanmo. Gotcha.

IMO – With the runaway success of Picard SE3, and the growing fan support for Terry Matalas, something should be approved for a Picard spinoff.

*It work for Strange New Worlds. :-D

I have to believe that Matalas’ ST: Legacy is going to be approved. I’d much rather see that than the Starfleet Academy idea. You’re right, it worked for Strange New Worlds so why wouldn’t it work again?

Matalas has said it’s not being developed (at least not currently), and after they wrapped, the Titan and Enterprise-D sets were junked. Not that they can’t rebuild them, of course.

NO, those sets were not “junked”. It has been stated that the the Enterprise D bridge will be kept safe (presumably forever this time). And I believe that the Titan bridge is saved as well.

There are two conflicting pieces of information on this. One is Blass on twitter saying the set has been “gone for over a year” and a recent Variety article implying that the set was saved in the Star Trek Archive… not sure what that all means.

Blass also said that key interior fittings were saved, packed and shipped.

It sounds like the underlying construction would need to be rebuilt.

If an announcement is coming, it will likely be at tonight’s IMAX event.

I wonder if with the success of SNW and Picard Season 3, which both series are less Kurtzman, if when his deal is up in 2026, if then Matalas may come in as franchise runner, and at that point we might see the Titan show.

NX-01 mini-series.

I guess this make Starfleet Academy the new Flag when Disco ends.

LOL no. That’s SNW!

SNW is too cheap to be the Flag.

And how do you know the next show won’t be even cheaper? They are trying to save money after all. ;)

I suspect that’s SNW, especially for rollout outside North America.

Captain Worf and the last mysterious Mission of the Enterprise-E !

Turn Starfleet Academy into your teen movie and give us a Legacy show instead

…. x2. Agreed.

Why not both?

I’m not sure why the Picard season three gang keep trying to make this an either or proposition.

It’s not a competition.

It’s about having a menu of options that includes shows that appeal to long time fans as well as ones designed to extend the reach of the franchise.

If there’s a business case for some kind of Matalas-helmed 25th century show, it will happen. The overlap between that niche and Starfleet Academy is modest. In fact, they are so complementary that TNG fans should be happy.

“….Picard season three gang…”

We have “gangs” here now? A great number of people here, and elsewhere, agree the first two seasons were dismal, and that’s being kind. Personally I think they were terrible. This season has been a great improvement, and kudos to all involved. As to what they make a series or a film, clearly up to TPTB.

I too agree that Picard season three was an improvement.

However, I wish we didn’t have this kind of division being promoted by those who want every show in the fandom to be just like this season Danpaine.

I don’t know what’s the least bad descriptor. Sounds like ‘groups’ isn’t it.

On one hand, I’m delighted that the YouTuber “Terry Trek” campaigners have at last found something new they can get behind.

I’ve been a strong believer in the ‘menu of shows strategy’ so I think it’s important that at least one thing in the menu does appeal to them, while at the same time having some pretty satisfying elements for many TNG fans.

I like season three, and especially like that my spouse is more into it than anything but SNW. But it’s not emotionally captivating either of us the way it seems to be affecting others.

And I have really enjoyed Matalas other shows, and would like to see what he could do with a 25th century show that he builds from the ground up.

The minuses is that there is a great deal of campaigning “Terry Trek all the way”, “give him the keys to the franchise” or “don’t make those other things and only make what we want” recurrent messages.

I was pretty blue about that just before the Academy show announcement.

I’ve been around the franchise long enough to remember the ‘camps’ within the fandom when TNG was in its early seasons. It was enough to keep me away from con’s and clubs for a couple of years.

I don’t want to see the equivalent of the old TOS vs TNG mutual contempt resurface. As a result, I’m inclined to push back on this kind of ‘gatekeeping by promotion’ behaviour when I see it.

To be honest, while I agree with 99% of what you said, I don’t know that I actually want people like the Terry Trek Campaigners to have a show they like. They are bigoted, homophobic, sexist, vile, hateful fans and I wish they’d just go away.

Sadly, Picard has emboldened them, and given them something to rally behind, a big middle finger, and they’re now using it as “proof” that “Woke Trek” is bad.

We need a Star Trek: The Next Generation by Balenciaga movie. Google it.

I’m just thinking that after Yeoh won her Oscar, won’t she be more expensive to get to do the movie? Unless, they had an agreement prior when the plan may have been a tv series or similar, or an options clause when she first started. Just saying.

I hope the stories and production values are out there but realize they aren’t the BIG $200M spectacles we get with the theatrical movies. The streaming shows are quite good but the service needs to crank out good product to get me to keep paying that monthly subscription fee.

She’ll certainly get more than she would have a couple of months ago, but female Best Actress Oscar winners don’t get anything like the pay bump their male counterparts get.

As far as locking her into a deal, this thing has been languishing in development long enough, it’s hard for me to imagine that any option Paramount had on her hasn’t expired. I just look at this as Yeoh signing for a job just like any other.

She’ll probably get a producer credit and a fatter check is a given but there is an expectation that television projects will pay less than feature films. There is money to be made on the back end, however.

Yeoh is indeed listed as an executive producer on the movie in Trekmovie’s other article.

I don’t know where people are getting this weird idea just because you win an Oscar, your asking fee suddenly doubles or something? I’m guessing the overwhelming majority of people who win an Oscar still makes the same money they were making before. All the make up artists, sound technicians, songwriters, costume designers, screenwriters, etc who wins one don’t suddenly get massive pay bumps for their next project. I’m guessing they can demand more but it’s not a guarantee either.

Obviously it’s a little different for actors but winning awards doesn’t suddenly mean they get huge salaries for their movies. Its funny because no one seems to assume that with her co-star, Ke Huy Quan, who also won an Oscar. Trust me, he’s not suddenly getting million dollar paychecks just because he won one. He may demand a little more money but in reality it will just give him more exposure than anything.

Yeoh was already a big star, but still not an A-lister either. If they can pay Harrison Ford to be on a show who is still considered an A lister, I don’t think it’s that big of a deal for Yeoh.

And I have said this before, if she really wants to do it, then she won’t price herself out of doing it lol. Actors can just take less money obviously and many do if they just want to be part of a movie or show they really like.

Her Oscar win isn’t that great. Her movie was a box office disappointment coming only 37th for the entire year. Producers and executives will want to see box office return proven and not some pompous award.

So did you or didn’t you vote for the greasy orange criminal?

I just have the feeling that there is not going to be a Legacy series, and they will instead punt that to a promise to fanbase that the second movie will cover that territory…but no series.

It sounds like movies are the way they’re going henceforth.

So now YOU’RE one of the “sky is falling” naysayers? Oh brother!

This is great! If these movies are Picard Season 3 quality, I bet they could head up straight to the theaters.

Good news but I think TV movies should be released at least annually… Okay, let’s not be greedy. It’s a lot better than no TV movies at all…

I’m really really excited about this! :)

It will be nice just to have movies again, even if they aren’t theatrical. And I think its a huge sign they are moving away from the big tent pole stuff they tried with the Kelvin movies.

But this is a nice middle ground if so. They can’t put out mid-budget movies anymore like the old days but they can’t really compete in the big budget arena either;especially if the aim is to make $500+ million. But producing low to mid budget movies will at least guarantee a profit and will still pull in both hardcore and casual fans. And even some newbies but I’m guessing it’s not going to be marketed to them as much like the theatrical movies. But again, that’s the issue with the big tentpole movies, you need them just to make a profit as Beyond proved.

So I really do think this is the way to go, at least for now. I like the Kelvin movies and I have no issues with big CGI spectacle, but Star Trek has always been geared more for TV end of the day. And while I like big escape popcorn movies as most people, it’s never been necessary for Trek to thrive on that either.

And I just want more freaking movies lol. If they still try to make another big studio movie in the future, I’m all for it of course. But now, no matter what happens with those, we’re now guaranteed to get a steady stream of them (no pun intended ;)) on Paramount+.

It’s just a lot easier to get them off the ground when you’re paying around $50 million for them and not a $150 million.

Actually very interested to see what they come up with, Tiger. I share your enthusiasm. And you’re right. Written well, these films don’t have to break the bank. Written well.

It just makes sense. The movie side has been floundering and I think they see the opportunity this can bring. Keep the features dead until you find hopefully a more suitable project. I just don’t see anything for at least 5 years now.

I agree, its like Paramount has finally figured it out how to do star trek films when you can’t really do them on the big screen anymore for less than 150m for whatever reasons .. And its like they using the newly Oscar winner Michelle Yeoh and the uncertainty of the S31 series as like a springboard for the ‘Trek TV Movie’ franchise (bringing back memories of when Star Trek II started off as a TV movie).. Hopefully to be followed by the Trek movies we REALLY want (a Kelvin ST4, Orcis ST3?, The Enterprise Movie),

Sisco must return.

Much prefer series to movies where we can get to know these characters. Movies are for after we know the chatacters from a series. Plus i don’t think anyone really asked for a show set at the academy. SNW was only greenlit because Pike was the only thing people seemed to like from Discovery. just because Just do a Picard spin off set after it where we see the aftermath of he end of Picard the movie the story along from there maybe take a tad longer to give us more episodes & make them more character oriented & less big action do we get more use out of the sets & have less special effects. That’ll save some money.

I’m not an Emperor Georgiou fan, but I do like Michelle Yeoh. I hope this turns out well enough that Paramount will play it in theatres first. I’d love to love it!

Let’s get Project Phoenix going.

This could be a nice chance to adapt some novels into a movie. There is some amazing material there. I would watch the hell out of a movie adapting “Spock’s world” with the SNW crew, with Pike and MBenga replacing Kirk and McCoy.

‘William Shatner: You Can Call Me Bill’ Review: Living Long

A documentary on the “Star Trek” actor unboldly goes where other profile movies have gone before.

A man in a black shirt sits in profile, light hitting his face as he talks.

By Ben Kenigsberg

The line between star and character gets thoroughly blurred in “William Shatner: You Can Call Me Bill,” a profile documentary that treats Shatner, the sole interviewee, as if he were as polished as Capt. James T. Kirk — as opposed to merely being the durable, hard-working actor who played him on “Star Trek” and a terrific raconteur.

The director, Alexandre O. Philippe, churns out movie-themed documentaries that veer between insightful ( “78/52: Hitchcock’s Shower Scene” ) and obsequious ( “Memory: The Origins of Alien” ). The fawning “You Can Call Me Bill” makes you like Shatner. Still, listening to the actor’s wit, wisdom and drippy insights for 96 minutes is enough to tempt any viewer to channel his or her inner Spock. (“Most illogical!”)

“You Can Call Me Bill” is tedious when Shatner shares his thoughts on animals and spirituality (“You reach a connection with a horse that can be something mystical”) but sharp when he reflects on acting. It’s interesting to hear that he felt influenced both by the traditionalism of Laurence Olivier and the Stella Adler training of Marlon Brando; he suggests that split was related to his being Canadian, torn between British and American cultures. He probes deeply into his craft when speaking of selecting differentiated traits that an audience could identify in scenes that featured multiple Kirks and of wanting another take of his death scene close-up in “Star Trek: Generations” (1994).

It’s hard not to smile during footage of Shatner, then 90, becoming the oldest person ever to travel to space . But “You Can Call Me Bill” is fundamentally a case of an actor presenting himself as he wants to be seen.

You Can Call Me Bill Rated PG-13 for some language that would mostly pass on 1960s television. Running time: 1 hour 36 minutes. In theaters.
