2023 TOUR OF OMAN STAGE 5 RESULTS

tour of oman 2023 stages

Movistar’s Matteo Jorgenson collected his first general classification victory as he held on to win the Tour of Oman by one second on Wednesday. The 23-year-old American, who took his first stage win on Monday, went into the 95 mile final stage, which ended with a 3 mile climb up Jabal Al Akhdhar, the Green Mountain, with a five-second lead over UAE’s Diego Ulissi and Quick-Step’s Mauri Vansevenant. Vansevenant, a Belgian, won the stage but Jorgensen finished on his wheels to take second on the day. With his victory – the second of his career with the pros – the 23-year-old Vansevenant pocketed 10 bonus seconds. Jorgensen took six for second place, enough to secure the victory.

“This is super, special,” said Jorgensen.

“Two days ago, I got my first professional win and now to take my first GC at a race like this, I’m just so happy.

“My goal for this season was to win one race and it has been the last two years and now we’ve just won two. You have no idea how good it feels.”

AG2R’s French rider Geoffrey Bouchard completed the podium, 12 seconds behind the winner, after taking third on the stage.

2023 Tour of Oman Stage 1

Al Rustaq Fort > Oman Convention & Exhibition centre 147.4km

tour of oman 2023 stages

The first stage of the Tour of Oman is one for the sprinters, and it’s the same finish as last year. The final 5km isn’t the exact same, but we have the same final turn and rise to the line. Cavendish was 2 nd  here in 2022, can he go one better for his new team in 2023?

Temperatures will hit 26 degrees and there’s going to be lots of sun.

The run for home is all about two right-hand corners, they come with 3.5km and 1km to go. The battle for the final corner will be fierce, those too far back won’t stand a chance. Last year, UAE got perfect position and Gaviria took the win, it really is very important to lead into that final bend.

No fancy tactics required, it’s all about the final corner with 1km to go. The approach road is wide, which can often make things harder for the sprint trains. You need a well-timed charge to the front and hold it for the corner, I’d want my sprinter to be in the first 5 wheels at the turn.

Mark Cavendish  – first race for Astana, we’ll see what type of winter he’s had. Cavendish knows the finish from last year, but it can take a while to gel with new riders. He’ll have Laas as his final man, and I would expect to see Fedorov help with positioning in the final kilometres. This isn’t a great sprint train; Cav will need to use all his skill to get a good position for the final kilometre.

Tim Merlier  – first race for QuickStep, but he has Bert Van Lerberghe as his final man, a rider he knows inside and out. James Knox had to withdraw from the squad a couple of days ago, it was interesting to see him replaced by Jordi Warlop, a rider to bolster the sprint train. The Belgian was part of the B&B squad that went bust, and he’s officially joined the QuickStep Devo team, but he’ll mainly ride for the pro squad. The three Belgians will form a strong sprint train for a race like this.

Pascal Ackermann  – third in the final stage of the Saudi Tour will have given him a confidence boost, but he knows he can do better. Illness ruined his chances in that race, but he should feel the benefit of the race in his legs, and he’ll hope to take his first win of the season here. The German will have Gibbons as his final man, he’ll hope to start the sprint from a good spot.

Matt Walls – has the track smarts to make up for not having much of a sprint train but is likely to hit the final corner too far back to contest the win, but the podium is possible.

David Dekker  – another sprinter without much of a sprint train. I’m a big fan of David’s, I’m hoping he can show himself in this stage.

Max Kanter  – walked away from the Saudi Tour with three 5 th  places. He’ll have Mathias Norsgaard to help him in the closing kilometres, but he could be destined for yet another 5 th  place.

Alexander Salby  – I like this guy. He caught my attention in last year’s ZLM Tour, where he mixed it with some of the best and impressed. He got his first win for Bingoal in the Bongo, he’ll be hoping to challenge for the podium in this stage.

Prediction Time

First race for QuickStep and a first win for  Tim Merlier .

PREVIEW | Tour of Oman 2023 stage 5 - Queen stage to Green Mountain to decide overall classification

From the 11th to the 15th of February racing will resume in the Middle East, with the traditional Tour of Oman bringing an interesting set of stages that will suit sprinters, climbers and classics riders simultaneously. Stage 5 will be the queen stage which will decide the overall classification, as the riders head towards the famous Green Mountain.

Finally, the queen stage. Jabal Al Akhdhar, or as it's more commonly known the 'green mountain', is 5.7 kilometers at 10.5% and will mark the end of the Tour of Oman. It is an almost completely pan-flat day but the final climb is a brute. On wide desert roads, the inconsistent final climb is know for generating massive gaps, and it will decide the overall classification.

Diego Ulissi takes stage 4 of Tour of Oman in a very disputed sprint finish

Matteo Jorgenson wins Tour of Oman stage 3 summit finish

New race leader beats Vansevenant and Bouchard at Jabal Hatt

Matteo Jorgenson (Movistar) won stage 3 of the Tour of Oman with a powerful uphill sprint at Jabal Haat to move into the overeall lead. The American opened his effort from distance, and he was an emphatic winner ahead of Mauri Vansevenant (Soudal-QuickStep) and Geoffroy Bouchard (AG2R Citroën).

Jorgenson takes possession of the red jersey after previous leader Jesus Herrada (Cofidis) was distanced on the final kick to the line.

The stage was always likely to be decided by the 4.6km haul to the finish, and so it proved, with the day’s early escapees Johan Means (Bingoal-WB), Alejandro Franco (Burgos-BH) and Stephen Bassett (Human Powered Health) swept up on the final approach to the climb.

UAE Team Emirates had been prominent in leading the chase on the approach to the climb, while Bora-Hansgrohe and then Lotto-Dstny took up the pace making as the gradient kicked in, quickly whittling the bunch down to 30 or so riders.

The first rider to get any real traction on an acceleration was Jorgenson, who launched a probing effort just outside the final kilometre. He was unable to open a gap, but he did succeed in breaking up the front group still further, with Herrada among those now distanced.

When Jorgenson relented, Rein Taaramae (Intermarché-Wanty-Gobert) was the next to try from the dozen or so riders still in contention, but the South African couldn’t put daylight between himself and his rivals.

The gradient eased slightly in the final 300 metres, and Jorgenson timed his effort smartly to produce what would be the decisive acceleration. His crisp turn of pace saw him open a winning gap to claim stage victory, while Vansevenant underscored his quality by coming through for second place ahead of Bouchard. Cristian Rodriguez (Arkea-Samsic) took fourth ahead of Cian Uijtdebroeks (Bora-Hansgrohe).

There was further drama in the finishing straight as the chasing group was impended when a gust of wind blew some barriers into the road, though mercifully there appeared to be no fallers in the incident.

In the overall standings, Jorgenson holds a lead of six seconds over Vansevenant and 14 on Bouchard ahead of stage 4 to Yitti Hills, while riders like Uijtdebroeks and Taaramae – hoth 18 seconds down – remain firmly in contention with Wednesday’s summit finish at Jabal Al Akhdhar still to come.

For Jorgenson, victory here was confirmation of the form he had showcased the previous at Qurayyat, where he placed fourth in the uphill dash behind Herrada. The 23-year-old was frustrated there, but he only had 24 hours to wait for his first professional win.

“I was starting to think it would never come,” Jorgenson said afterwards.

“To be honest, things happen in your head, and you think maybe you’re not quite talented enough to do it. Today, I’m just super glad I won and winning there with a little difference is super-nice. It’s an amazing feeling.”

Barcelona: Tadej Pogacar sprinted to an impressive fourth stage victory of the week as he sealed his Tour of Catalonia triumph on Sunday.

The Slovenian two-time Tour de France champion edged a chaotic sprint to take stage seven, adding to his stage two, three and six triumphs, blowing away his general classification competition.

Pogacar emerged ahead of French duo Dorian Godon and Guillaume Martin, second and third respectively, in a frenzied finish to the 143.5 kilometre stage, which started and finished in Barcelona.

“I’m so happy to take the win — it wasn’t the original plan,” said Pogacar.

Pogacar’s UAE teammate Joao Almeida had a move shut down in the final kilometres but Pogacar snatched victory.

“Joao Almeida set a good pace on the climb and we were a small group in the front,” added Pogacar.

“He made a good attack on the last small climb and almost came to the finish. I wish he could arrive, but I’m happy to take this win, too.”

The UAE Team Emirates rider won the race by three minutes 41 seconds from Spaniard Mikel Landa, with Egan Bernal third, a full five minutes and three seconds behind Pogacar.

The 25-year-old carved out a big lead on the second stage and nobody threatened to depose him for the rest of the week.

Pogacar is aiming for an ambitious Giro-Tour double in 2024, hoping to become the first man to win both since Marco Pantani in 1998.

PHOENIX (AP) — Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band returned to the stage Tuesday evening at the Footprint Center in Phoenix in a triumphant reboot of the Boss’ postponed 2023 world tour.

In September Springsteen, 74, announced his tour would be delayed until 2024 , citing doctor’s advice as he recovered from peptic ulcer disease.

“The Boss” arrived on stage to an audience chorus of “Bruuuuce!” Wearing dark jeans and a rolled up red plaid flannel shirt, he had the energy of a man half his age. His signature “One, two, three, four” was the only thing that separated most songs, showing no signs of his illness from the previous year. Once he shouted, “Good evening, Arizona” the show was off and running.

Springsteen spoke to the crowd briefly about his illness prior to playing his final song “I’ll See You In My Dreams” solo on stage. “Phoenix, first I want to apologize if there was any discomfort because we had to move the show last time. . . . I hope we didn’t inconvenience you too much.”

The 29-song show came in just under three hours, but “The Boss” hardly broke a sweat while showing off a strong voice, all the while dancing, tearing into guitar solos, playing the harmonica and even ripping his shirt open near the end of the show.

On stage with Springsteen was the legendary E Street Band which features drummer Max Weinberg, bassist Garry Tallent, keyboardists Roy Bittan and Charlie Giordano, guitarists Stevie Van Zandt and Nils Lofgren, saxophonist Jake Clemons — nephew of original and still missed sax man Clarence Clemons who died in 2011 — guitarist and violin player Soozie Tyrell, a full horn and brass section and four backup vocalists. The only missing member of the band was Springsteen’s wife, singer and guitarist Patti Scialfa.

Springsteen performed most of the hits in his vast collection, minus “Born In The U.S.A.,” but he added covers “Nightshift” by the Commodores, “Because The Night” by Patti Smith Group, and a surprise: “Twist and Shout” by The Beatles. Fans went wild for “No Surrender,” “Born To Run,” “Rosalita,” “Dancing In The Dark,” “Glory Days” and “Tenth Avenue Freeze-Out” that left the rocker grinning from ear-to-ear as he conducted fans singing along like his own chorus.

This year has been particularly challenging for Springsteen. In addition to his health issues, in January his mother, Adele Ann Springsteen, a fan favorite who could frequently be seen dancing at his shows, died . She was 98.

Two days after her death, Springsteen performed at the 2024 MusiCares Person of the Year event, which honored Jon Bon Jovi for his musical achievements and philanthropic efforts.

The 2024 edition of the tour kicked off in Phoenix and ends Nov. 22 in Vancouver, Canada. It hits 17 countries across 52 dates, including a special performance on Sept. 15 where Springsteen will headline the Sea.Hear.Now Festival in his hometown of Asbury Park, New Jersey.
