Getting to Your Greenland Cruise

Due to Greenland’s isolated nature, very little infrastructure links towns and settlements, making an expedition cruise with shore landings by Zodiac the perfect way to encounter all Greenland offers.

With Greenland, there are two main options for joining cruises: 1) to fly to Greenland and join a cruise that departs from there, or 2) join an expedition cruise that sails to Greenland from other destinations in the Arctic, such as Svalbard, Greenland or Iceland. The choice is down to which itinerary best suits your preferences.

For cruises commencing in Greenland, a charter flight to Greenland is often included as part of the itinerary from Iceland or Copenhagen, Denmark, to ensure a seamless journey.

If cruising to Greenland from another destination, you must reach the departure port first. Many cruises to Greenland depart from Reykjavik, Iceland, which has excellent international connections to the rest of the world.

Depending on your itinerary, a flight to and from the departure port may also be included. If not, our Travel Experience Team can help you with this.

For more information, please see our guide below for all the different ways to get to Greenland.

When To Go On A Greenland Cruise

Greenland cruises typically occur during the summer between June and September when the temperature is at its mildest, and the seas around Greenland have less sea ice, making navigation possible. However, new icebreaker cruises now make visiting East Greenland much earlier in the season, during April and May, than possible on a conventional ship due to its unique icebreaking capabilities.

The best time to explore Greenland on an expedition cruise depends on what you want to see. April to June offer the best chance to undertake a genuine polar expedition deep into the sea ice of East Greenland on an icebreaker cruise.

June and July offer great months to explore the tranquil fjords of the West Coast of Greenland and the stunning ice formations of Disko Bay, with 24 hours of sunlight above the Arctic Circle and often mild weather.

August is the best month for expeditions to East Greenland on regular cruise ships and for exploring further afield, from Greenland to the Northwest Passage, as the sea ice extent is at its lowest.

September offers the best chances to see the Northern lights on your cruise as the darkness returns, and it is an excellent month for photographers with gorgeous hues in the sky.

Please see our detailed guide below to learn what a Greenland cruise offers each month.

Frequently Asked Questions

The price of a Greenland cruise varies depending on several factors, including the ship size, the level of luxury, the itinerary, the number of guests, the time of year, and the length of your chosen itinerary. As a rule of thumb, prices per person start from £1,000 ($1274, €1152) per person per night for an expedition cruise. Due to their specialist nature, icebreaker cruises to Greenland command a higher price per person.

Yes, we offer no single supplement on selected Greenland cruises. Our Travel Experience Team has access to the best offers for solo travellers.

We recommend you contact us with your requirements, and we can help you find the best no-single supplement Greenland cruise for you.

Seeing polar bears on a cruise in East Greenland is possible, although the chances are less so than in Svalbard. However, please note you are highly unlikely to see them in Southern Greenland or the Disko Bay area, as they are concentrated in areas of sea ice, and these areas are ice-free during the summer.

For the best chances of seeing polar bears, we recommend a Greenland cruise that also visits Svalbard.

The weather on a Greenland cruise can vary depending on the time of year you plan to visit. Greenland has an Arctic climate, so it generally experiences cooler temperatures, although it is surprisingly mild during the summer months.

Summer (June to August)

These are the best months for cruising in Greenland. Daytime temperatures above the Arctic Circle range from 0 to 10 degrees Celsius (32 to 50 degrees Fahrenheit). Areas to the south experience milder temperatures, especially during July. Longer daylight hours, with places above the Arctic Circle experiencing the midnight sun. During the summer, the Arctic has predominately high-pressure weather systems, which create calm conditions. Disko Bay is often affectionately called Disko Lake locally due to its calm summertime conditions.

Spring (April to May)

Spring temperatures on icebreaker cruises are colder than summer, ranging from -10 to 5 degrees Celsius (14 to 41 degrees Fahrenheit). However, lower temperatures can be encountered in the sea ice in East Greenland, and snowfall is possible during this time.

Fall (September to October)

Late-season cruises encounter lower temperatures than summer cruises, with daily temperatures ranging from -10 to 5 degrees Celsius (14 to 41 degrees Fahrenheit). The first snowfall also returns during this period. These months offer the best opportunities to see the Northern Lights.

Conditions can vary depending on your chosen time to visit. Additionally, weather conditions in Greenland can change rapidly, so it’s wise to pack layers, including warm clothing, waterproof gear, and sturdy footwear.

During the reservation process, we will provide you with a complete packing list to prepare you for the weather conditions on your Greenland cruise.

Each Greenland cruise includes accommodation in well-appointed cabins, meals, expert guides, guest lecturers outlined in the itinerary, Zodiac cruises and excursions, and specified charter flights.

Please check the tour page of your chosen itinerary to see a complete list of inclusions.

Financial security is paramount for our clients, so all bookings made through North Pole Cruises include 100% financial protection. We also include supplier failure insurance free of charge for extra peace of mind. This ensures you have the very best protection on your booking.

When reserving your chosen itinerary, the payment options will be quoted.

Typical payment terms are a 25% deposit when booking to reserve your cabin and the final balance payable 90 days before departure.

We accept payment via credit card or bank transfer.

Each expedition ship and voyage offers different activities in Greenland. Zodiac excursions and shore landings with a team of expert guides are standard for all Greenland expedition cruises.

Optional kayaking, dog sledding, ice trekking, camping, and ice fishing are available on selected departures.

During the reservation process, please specify which activities you are interested in, and we will assist you in finding a cruise that fits your preferences. Depending on the ship, some activities are included in the cost, and others are extra.

Due to its vast area, wildlife in Greenland is seen less frequently than in Svalbard, where the wildlife is more concentrated. Cruises to East Greenland offer the best chances to see polar bears, although this cannot be guaranteed. Disko Bay offers excellent whale-watching opportunities.

If wildlife is a primary interest, we recommend a cruise that combines Svalbard and Greenland, as this will offer more opportunities for wildlife sightings.

If you need help deciding which Greenland cruise best fits your interests, please contact our Travel Experience Team.

Greenland cruises vary between 10 days for an icebreaker cruise to explore East Greenland during the spring and 28 days for an all-encompassing cruise to explore Greenland and the Northwest Passage. We have a variety of Greenland cruises available and can help you find one that matches your ideal length.

We recommend reserving your Greenland cruise a year in advance to ensure you get your preferred choice of ship and cabin. We usually have last-minute availability on select departures for late bookers.

Please get in touch with our Travel Experience Team to find out about last-minute availability.

The first step to reserving your Greenland cruise is to contact our Travel Experience Team, who will be happy to help you with your itinerary and provide details about availability and pricing for your selected voyage.

Stretching approximately 2,800 kilometres (1,750 miles) from north to south and approximately 1,000 kilometres (625 miles) from east to west, Greenland is the world’s biggest island. Some do claim that Australia is a bigger island, but according to international definitions, Australia is regarded as a continent. East Greenland is just a short flight from Iceland, but its culture and landscapes are a world away. In a land dominated by the Ice Cap and impossibly steep mountain ranges, 3,500 people have made it their home. Their culture is born from myths and legends, often expressed in bone and rock carvings, but at the same time it is a globally connected culture with strong hunting roots and an everyday spirit of adventure. Discover Scoresbysund where you can paddle and Zodiac cruise along one of the world’s longest, largest and deepest fjord systems. At Ittoqqortoormiit, visit Greenland’s most remote settlement, home to approximately 450 mostly Inuit, people.South Greenland lives up to its name as it is truly a ‘green land’. It is a land of jagged mountains and green pastures where sheep farms directly border ice fjords, and Norse settlement history intertwines with modern fishing and hunting communities. Natural hot springs on a remote island, big wall climbing, and fjord kayaking abound in South Greenland.

Greenland’s capital, Nuuk, located in West Greenland is an arctic metropolis with a small-town feel, shaped by nature and known for its cultural diversity. While Nuuk is the colourful heart of this nation, the smaller communities of Paamiut south of the capital and Kapisillit in the Nuuk Fjord, are places to kick back and spend time in the outdoors. From the Disko Bay area in central West Greenland to the polar extremes of the far north, the scale of North Greenland is hard to fathom. Along a coastline stretching thousands of miles lie small communities based on hunting and fishing, in a land ruled by the Polar Night in winter and the summer’s Midnight Sun. From the strange volcanic rocks along the hiking trails on Qeqertarsuaq, the constant flow of massive icebergs from one of the world’s fastest flowing glaciers in Ilulissat Icefjord, a UNESCO World Heritage Listed site, the diverse landscapes and superb whale and bird-watching opportunities in Disko Bay, makes West Greenland an ideal place to experience an expedition cruise.

Why Join a Greenland Expedition Cruise?

As one of the best known Arctic islands, Greenland is a remarkable destination that leaves its imprint in ways not entirely explainable. Whether you’re exploring the East, West or South, our Greenland Expeditions reveal the beauty of the world’s largest island.

Many people still have misconceptions about this alluring Arctic nation. For one, despite being almost completely covered by the Greenland Ice Sheet, there is more to Greenland than glaciers and ice. It is a nation with layers of culture and history that will unfold before you. Greenland has one of the world’s smallest populations, with approximately 56,500 inhabitants. Today, 88% of Greenland’s population is Inuit (predominantly Kalaallit) or a mix of Danish and Inuit. The remaining 12% are of European descent, mainly Danish.

A trip to Greenland takes you to one of the planet’s last great wildernesses, a remote land of ice and snow. Offering remarkable landscapes, exceptional wildlife, iceberg-filled fjords, majestic peaks, vast tundra, Viking history and contemporary Inuit culture, Greenland is truly unlike anywhere else in the world. The fjords and mountains of Greenland are where life is concentrated. Summer is the best time to visit Greenland – when wildflowers are in full bloom, birds start breeding and wildlife sightings are most common. If you’re lucky you can observe bands of caribou, musk oxen, Arctic foxes and polar bears. Seals, walruses and many species of whales including humpbacks, orcas and white belugas also gather near its shores.

In Greenland, tiny, isolated communities are scattered among the fjords, accessible only by small plane (or helicopter when there is no room for a runway), boat, kayak, afoot or by dogsled in winter. Discover this fascinating country’s hidden secrets as you traverse its waters and embark on unforgettable adventures.

Greenland Wildlife Encounters

Greenland is a biodiversity hotspot, and wildlife encounters are expected throughout the cruise. The rugged terrain and sea ice you’ll enjoy panoramic views of throughout our Greenland Arctic expedition provide a unique habitat for the wildlife that lives here. Our Expedition Team includes onboard naturalists that will educate and guide you through your wildlife encounters both on land and at sea.

A largely remote wilderness, Greenland’s unique natural habitats provide a home for a plethora of captivating wildlife. Some highlights for lucky travellers include polar bears, Arctic foxes, reindeer, Arctic hares, humpback whales, blue whales, fin whales, narwhals, ringed seals, countless Arctic bird species and one of the largest populations of muskoxen.

Visit Greenland on an Aurora Expeditions cruise for whale watching, opportunities to see the majestic polar bear and much more.

Unique Greenland Experiences

Being polar expeditions, our Greenland tours include truly once-in-a-lifetime experiences. A cruise in the Arctic Circle around Greenland provides a rare opportunity to take a polar plunge, embark on Zodiac cruises through the ice sheet, and observe unique geological formations and breathtaking scenery on trips ashore.

Our Greenland expedition experts can also take you on optional excursions via our comprehensive activity program . You might want to try an unforgettable journey on our sea kayaks, rock climbing the rugged cliffs of one of the national parks or scuba diving in the polar regions of the Arctic. If you would like to learn more about the included or optional activities, please contact us , we’re here to help!

Greenland Tour Regions

Greenland zodiac cruise

East Greenland

East Greenland is one of the most isolated areas in Greenland and offers fantastic possibilities for big adventures. In East Greenland jagged mountains rise from the sea and giant white and blue icebergs float in deep fjords. Only 120 years ago, there was no connection between West and East Greenland. Therefore, culture and traditions are different to the ones in the west and it is also why East Greenlanders speak a different language. Discover the fascinating geology of the Skaergaard Intrusion, enjoy Zodiac cruises among icebergs and hike through one-of-a-kind tundra.

Prince Christian Sound, Greenland

South Greenland

South Greenland travel also provides opportunities for adventure. Temperatures in southern Greenland are higher than in the rest of the country, sometimes even reaching up to 20° Celsius during summer. The landscapes are greener and the ground more fertile, with many farms along its coast. The area is full of contrasts between the green shades of the landscape and the myriad of blues that paint the ice. The region is popular for those keen on an adventure. Experience hiking tours or go kayaking to see whales and other wildlife. It is easy to take individual trips because the settlements are close to each other with great boat connections. See for yourself when you cruise Prince Christian Sound (Prins Christian Sund), flanked by imposing mountains, where the Viking ruins of Erik the Red still stand from the Middle Ages.

Nuuk, Greenland's capital

West Greenland

West Greenland is the most populated region of the country, containing the nation’s capital, Nuuk, the starting point for most travellers’ on their Greenland adventures. Here, you can visit the largest ice cap in the northern hemisphere, Ilulissat Icefjord. This UNESCO-listed 55km-long natural sculpture park boasts countless jaw-dropping icebergs. Explore untamed nature on foot or from water level in a kayak or Zodiac. Stop at remote villages along the West Greenland coastline to learn about the traditional lifestyle. Historically West Greenland was known for its fishing and hunting industries, which are still an integral part of the local way of life.

West Greenland is also home to Disko Bay, a large and significant bay on the west coast, steeped in history. Its nutrient-rich waters have made it the perfect home for a wide range of species. Disko Bay is a great place for whale watching and kayaking, with a number of different species of whales visiting the bay during the springtime. Disko Bay also attracts migratory seals that use the teaming waters of the bay to feed.

Passenger marvelling at the Northern Lights from the deck of the Greg Mortimer ship in Greenland

North Greenland

North Greenland is home to the harsh realities of the Arctic Islands. It’s the land of the polar nights in the winter and of the midnight sun in the summer. The midnight sun is a natural phenomenon in the Arctic Circle where the sun remains visible throughout the night and day. During the winter months however, North Greenland is one of the best places to see the Northern Lights because of the long nights, with the dark skies making the perfect backdrop to showcase the lights in all their colours. The area is also known for its dog sledding which is common amongst the locals and a fun experience for tourists.

Why Cruise to Greenland?

Remote and still largely off the map of mainstream tourism, Greenland offers pristine wilderness, authentic culture and thrilling activities, making it an unforgettable adventure destination. Brightly colored coastal towns, skyscraper icebergs, massive glaciers, extensive fjords, vast tundra and fluffy sled dogs draw photographers and intrepid travelers from all over the world.

As the saying goes, “When you’ve seen the world, there is always Greenland.” Due to Greenland’s inhospitable Arctic terrain, lack of developed road network and the fact that it’s 80% covered by the world’s second-largest ice sheet, it’s not the easiest country to explore. That’s where the benefits of a cruise to Greenland comes in.

Greenland small ship cruises make the most of scattered settlements and remote fjords by sailing you efficiently along the coastline. In fact, of Greenland’s 60,000 inhabitants, 90% are of Indigenous descent, living in settlements up and down the coasts. Greenland is the least densely populated country on the planet, in fact, and is an independent Danish territory with its own parliament.

Depending on where you visit, you may have opportunities for hiking, kayaking, camping, mountain biking, dog sledding, rock climbing and even helicopter assisted adventures. Plus other activities like Zodiac cruising through icefields, watching for arctic wildlife and the aurora borealis, visiting fascinating historic sites and authentic Greenlandic villages.

Greenland Cruise Itineraries & Regions

Cruises to Greenland visit three distinct regions: East Greenland, South Greenland and West Greenland. Some itineraries may highlight two or three regions, while others concentrate on a deeper exploration of one. Regions of Greenland may be part of an extended route that also include nearby Arctic islands like Svalbard and Iceland to the east, or a greater Canada and Northwest Passage itinerary to the west.

East Greenland

Above the Arctic circle, East Greenland is the least visited and most remote part of the island. It offers natural beauty and a surprising collection of flora and fauna. East Greenland is also one of the least populated areas in Greenland. Some communities who live in this isolated territory speak a different language and still follow an ancestral way of life living off the land.

For nine months out of the year, East Greenland is covered with snow and pack ice, so during the short summer season an ice-strengthened vessel is needed to operate here and daily cruise stops are often still guided by weather and ice conditions.

Man from remote Greenland settlement of Ittoqqortoormiit dressed in all white traditional Inuit clothing sings and plays instrument.

In East Greenland you will likely visit two main areas on a Greenland small ship cruise: Scoresby Sund and Northeast Greenland National Park.

Scoresby Sund is the world’s largest and deepest fjord system. Its tree-like structure branches off into a labyrinth of fjords with massive icebergs, towering basalt walls, calving glaciers and surprisingly colorful tundra. Near the mouth of Scoresby Sund is Ittoqqortoormiit, one of the most remote settlements on Earth. For most of the year, its 300 inhabitants are cut off from the rest of the country and survive by hunting and fishing. Scoresby Sund is one of the best places in the Arctic to see the northern lights as well as local wildlife.

Farther north is the world’s largest national park, the Northeast Greenland National Park . With no permanent human population, it is one of the best places to spot Greenland’s wildlife and is also an important breeding ground for polar bear and walrus. Access to the park is strictly controlled, so cruise operators must apply for separate permits to sail here.

Cruises to East Greenland typically start with an embarkation from Iceland or Svalbard . Some  Arctic cruises  may visit all three Arctic islands as part of a larger itinerary and range from 10-18 days or more. You can even visit East Greenland from the route of a  North Pole expedition .

South Greenland

South Greenland is a maze of scenic fjords, sounds, islets and inlets. Sailing through Prins Christian Sund and Skjoldungen Sund surrounded by high iconic peaks and turquoise lakes, you’ll see why the heart of this region is known as “Arctic Patagonia.” But it’s not all icy fjords and mountain peaks. South Greenland has a uniquely warm microclimate, and its surprisingly lush and fertile coast is filled with green pastures and sheep farms. The “Garden of Greenland” is perfect for adventure experiences like hiking, kayaking, mountain bike riding, rock climbing and more. From the ruins of Brattahlíð, the estate of Viking Erik the Red, to the modern landscape of Kujataa, the UNESCO World Heritage region of southern Greenland, see historic sites with the largest and best-preserved Norse ruins, green-roofed turf houses, and a 14 th century chapel built and named for Erik the Red’s wife, Tjoldhilde.

Unless it’s part of a larger itinerary, cruises to South Greenland typically start from Narsarsuaq, south Greenland, with charter flights connecting to Reykjavik, Iceland.

In South Greenland tall jagged granite peaks and turquoise water are set against blue sky

West Greenland

Home to Nuuk, the nation’s charming capital, West Greenland is the island’s most developed and visited region. Colorful Inuit communities like Ilulissat, Rode Bay, Ilimanaq and Uummannaq are perched at the edge of the Greenland ice cap and carry on their timeless way of life.

A highlight of the west is cruising through Disko Bay and stopping at several fascinating landing sites. The settlement town of Ilulissat is known for having more sled dogs than people. The Ilulissat Icefjord is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is home to Jakobshavn Glacier, one of the world’s most active glaciers, dubbed “the birthplace of icebergs.”

The Baffin Sea is the body of water that lies between West Greenland and the Arctic Archipelago of Canada. It serves as the eastern entrance to the Northwest Passage, the legendary sea route that links the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans.

Access to and from West Greenland is via the international airport in Kangerlussuaq. There are Greenland small ship cruises that focus on West Greenland only; explore both West Greenland and Arctic Canada; or use Kangerlussuaq as an embarkation point for Northwest Passage journeys.

Northwest Passage Cruises

Become part of an elite club of cruisers. Greenland cruise itineraries that include the Northwest Passage explore the icy frontier above 80° north on the same route that has attracted legendary explorers for centuries.

Some operators attempt to sail the full length of the Northwest Passage. These journeys range 22-30 days long and start from Kangerlussuaq in west Greenland, cruising long Baffin Island, through the Bellot Strait, along mainland Canada’s northern shoreline and around Alaska’s Far North shoreline, ending in Nome, Alaska.

Abbreviated routes may just explore the eastern portion of the Northwest Passage, starting in West Greenland and ending in the Canadian Arctic archipelago. These itineraries are generally around 17 days.

Coastal Comparison & A Note about Wildlife

The southern, eastern and western coasts of Greenland all have their own unique experiences and features dictated by climate, wildlife, human population and geology.

The west is characterized by beautiful mountainous landscapes and abundant, brightly colored settlements. The south holds fascinating Norse history, and due to a lower human population in the east, there are slightly greater possibilities of seeing more wildlife.

Most travelers come to Greenland to experience the Inuit culture and the breathtaking natural beauty of mountains, glaciers and enormous icebergs. All are possible in any of the three regions. If wildlife is your number one priority, consider adding East Greenland and Svalbard to your itinerary if a combination of landscapes and wildlife is what you’re looking for.

Best Time for Cruises to Greenland

Most Greenland cruises operate between June and October, when most of the country’s coasts are snow-free and vegetation is thawed out. The midnight sun can be experienced in the summer between mid-April to the end of August. From the end of August through October, the aurora borealis can be viewed. In fact, our AdventureSmith experts witnessed the northern lights enroute to East Greenland during an August North Pole expedition that stopped in Scoresby Sund (pictured below). See all focused northern lights cruises to learn more.

When visiting Greenland, remember that it’s the biggest island in the world, so there are climate variations throughout the seasons, from coast to coast, and even from fjord to fjord.

Guests stand on deck of ship staring up at the green strip of lights across the dark night sky, it the aurora borealis in Greenland.

Hear It From Greenland Cruise Travelers

I’m 72 and I was looking for an adventure which was different from the usual European trip of visiting endless museums, palaces, churches, etc. I don’t enjoy crowded venues, mobbed by other tourists. Greenland was not a place that every other traveler visits. This expedition gave me the opportunity to hike in places where no one had stepped foot before, in breathtaking surroundings and yet I didn’t have make any arrangements for sleeping accommodations, dining, tours, etc. AdventureSmith and Quark did it all for me, all I had to do is board the ship!

I loved this trip exploring South Greenland. We experienced so much in our time aboard and we had great weather during our trip. The scenery was stunning and varied. We spent a lot of time off the ship exploring by zodiac, on foot, paddling, and by helicopter(2x). Exploring by helicopter and making 2 landings in Greenland was an unforgettable experience.

Fascinating trip to a rarely visited part of the world on an exceptional vessel.

We had an absolutely perfect trip!! First class from beginning to end. Loved the helicopter rides and the views we were able to experience from high above Greenland. The ship was fabulous. The room was great. Spacious, considering we were on a ship. It had a large window so we could take in all of the spectacular views. The staff was wonderful. The food was excellent. We would definitely travel with Quark again.

Accommodations Review

We had an Explorer Triple which was roomy enough for three. It had lots of storage. The shower was OUTSTANDING!

Meals Review

A wonderful variety, prepared extremely well and they were able to address specific requests.

Itinerary Review

I enjoyed the ability to visit hiking sites via the helicopters. I felt like our group was possibly the first people to walk on these locations. The paddle excursion around and among icebergs was a thrill and of course, the various sites for hiking via the zodiacs was always enjoyable. Everywhere seemed to be pristine.

Transportation Review

Clear instructions regarding our Quark connections.

Fellow Passengers Review

I loved meeting my fellow passengers from around the world. Everyone was friendly and fun to be around.

Crew & Guides Review

The Expedition Leader explained considerations for the following day’s activities and she always seemed to find a work around if the weather (clouds, ice, etc) didn’t permit the “planned” days activities. She was personable, humorous and very professional. I was wowed by her ability to get things done.

AdventureSmith Explorations Review

Arielle forwarded us information in a timely manner and was available to answer our questions if they weren’t addressed in the Quark information package.

Ultramarine is the culmination of decades of expedition experience built into the perfect expedition platform. The Balcony Suite I was in was comfortable, quiet, and was in a good location to access all parts of the ship. I enjoyed the Common areas of the ship a lot, the Panorama Lounge + Espresso Station, the Bistro for Breakfast and Lunch, the ambassador theater for presentations and briefings and the massive outdoor areas for taking in the views.

I enjoyed Heli Hiking in Prince Christian Sound. We were able to get amazing 360 degree views with multiple fjords, rocky peaks, alpine lakes, and hanging glaciers. The fjords in this area are framed by glacier carved granite domes and spires with some still having glaciers around the tops and in the valleys. Landing on the ice sheet looked like you were landing on the moon with Ice as all you can see in all directions. They had expedition teams members on the ice who gave you a brief intro to the environment and a couple directions about where you could and couldn't go. The landing site they had chosen had solid ice underfoot and small creeks and pools around the immediate area where you could see the most beautiful blue colors of the ice coming through the crystal clear water above. Being on the ice sheet even for a short time was a breathtaking highlight from the trip. The Heli flight back I had a window seat and was able to take some amazing aerial shots of the ice sheet and tidewater glaciers from above on the way back to the ship.

The food aboard was excellent and the service was excellent also. I liked the option to eat at the Bistro for Breakfast and Lunch. It has a great view and is smaller and less busy than the Balena restaurant which is the main one. I think more variety could be offered at the buffets.

This trip has a variety of ability levels and ages. The expedition team did a great job of provided activities for everyone. There were some passengers I enjoyed socializing with more than others but that is to be expected in any group setting.

Ali was our expedtion leader and she was amazing throughout. We had great weather and we were able to accomplish so many activites throughout the voyage. When you think about what it takes to operate so many activities and the amount of staff and resources that takes, it is amazing what they accomplished. I enjoyed interacting with Mauricio, Colin, Nix, Alice, Emily, Juju, Clement, Gordo all from the Expedition team. There were so many aboard and they were all personable and accessible. I enjoyed talking with them at meals or in the lounge as well as on the excursions. Many of the staff had worked with Quark for 10+ years in both Arctic and Antarctica.

Be ready to be flexible and to be active. Luggage requirements for the charter flights were a challenge so plan to pack light and efficient

The vessel is luxurious, cabins and public areas first rate.

The buffet was more appealing with more choices than the restaurant which tried hard to be innovative, but missed appealing to me.

[I most enjoyed]...Seeing 13 polar bears in 6 days acting in a natural way, showing curiosity but no fear. The vastness of the sea and landscape. Riding in a dogsled. Wish we had more chances to visit land and see Arctic plants.

Be prepared to be in awe.

Steve Moir expedition leader had unlimited enthusiasm that was contagious. Naturalists Alize Fouchard, Alexandra Morozova, and Gordana Mrakovcic not only led walks but also gave excellent lectures. Ornithologist Manuel Marin was special, as was local guide Jaakusaaq Soerensen, who taught us about Inuit culture, religion, and language.

There were more English speakers on this cruise than my previous Ponant cruise. Had good interactions with a good number of them.

Andrew Browning never misses a detail in preparing me for my trips. Can’t ask for better. I recommend AdventureSmith Explorations to friends and family frequently.

First rate all the way!

Liked the wide variety at each meal. It was nice to have wine served with dinner. Deserts were fantastic. I liked the fact that you could also order items that were served daily at lunch and dinner. An example would be to get a hamburger at lunch or a grilled chicken breast at dinner. That was nice. Only thing a did not like were the cookies. They were bland.

Wow! So much beauty in Greenland! We LOVED the kayaking amid the huge icebergs. That was our favorite experience. We also LOVED the helicopter rides, especially over the ice sheet. It was jaw dropping! We enjoyed meeting some of the Greenlanders on our stops at the villages. They had a choir which performed for us. It was wonderful.  I'm sure they spent a lot of time practicing. The hikes we took were all great and each one was a little different. We really enjoyed doing the Polar Plunge! It was more fun than I expected. Plus, we received a "badge" showing our Arctic Polar Plunge had been accomplished.  LOVED the shot of Vodka too!

Go! The trip was even better than I expected!

Allison Gordan (Our leader) was incredible!!! She guided this cruise through unexpected weather in order that we could enjoy every aspect of this tour that we had hoped for. We were able to do everything because of her determination to give us the best trip possible. She is a wonderful speaker too. Funny, but professional.  What really impressed me was that she called us by name after a couple of days on the trip. There were 3 of us together, and she got the names right every time. There were 160 guests on this ship. How does she do that?? She certainly made us feel important. Plus, she was so nice to talk to. Answered all of our questions. She was just wonderful. We also really enjoyed her father, Ian Gordan. He was funny, personable, and a true professional. Also, kudos to our Nix, our photographer. She did a great job and fun to be with. Other great staff members included Marla, Alice, Peter, Fabrece, Neil, actually everyone was super great and extremely helpful no matter what we needed.

We met so many great people from Ireland, Australia, England, South Africa, America, Canada. Some of whom I will never forget!

Everything was perfect! Arielle was fantastic. She was right there anytime we needed anything. Outstanding service and friendly too!

Ice Fjord in Qoroq, Greenland

Discover Natural Wonders on a Greenland Cruise

Lying between the North Atlantic and Arctic oceans , much of Greenland’s surface is covered in ice, with its sparse populace nestled on the ice-free, fjord-lined coast to the southwest. Situated largely above the Arctic Circle, the island offers stunning landscapes and natural phenomena such as the summer’s midnight sun. There's nothing more spectacular than a Greenland cruise.

The old saying goes, “When you've seen the world, there's always Greenland,” but there are many reasons to make the trip much sooner. Greenland may be remote, but it's a natural masterpiece ideal for an Arctic cruise. Cruise to Iceland and Greenland, where dramatic fjords, imposing mountains and majestic icebergs are a feature of the unspoilt landscapes here, providing a haven for an amazing array of wildlife such as whales, seabirds, seals and reindeer.[ReadMoreDesk][ReadMoreMob]

Greenland's history and culture

Cruise to Greenland from UK and explore one of the world’s smallest capitals: cosmopolitan Nuuk. The city offers a mix of intriguing museums and more history can be found at the Viking ruins in Narsarsuaq and Qassiarsuk, and at Qaqortoq’s small Inuit (Eskimo) Museum.

The unique blend of Inuit and Danish ancestry has produced a Greenlandic culture all of its own. Experience the ways of traditional life, which are still well and truly present in some areas. A cruise to Greenland offers a chance to immerse yourself in the local culture. Dog sledding and fishing are still typically used in some areas whilst Greenlandic art and handicrafts, such as carvings, prints, and textiles, are highly valued around the world. Cruises to the fjords of Greenland are something special and time in each destination should be taken to unwind and witness some of this land’s most dazzling natural experiences.

Discover UNESCO-listed sites, spectacular scenery, abundant wildlife and Inuit settlements, all while guided by your expert Expedition Team.

Sail down the west coast of Greenland, with its stunning coastal panoramas and pretty settlements of colorful houses.

Sail along the top of the world through the Northwest Passage

Sailing through the Northwest Passage on a state-of-the-art ice-class expedition ship is a captivating journey that blends natural wonders, culture and history. The passage, once an elusive route for explorers, now offers intrepid travelers a chance to witness breathtaking Arctic landscapes and learn about indigenous communities through first-hand experiences. On this adventure, we’ll attempt to traverse the entire route and beyond, going from Nome, Alaska to Nuuk, Greenland.

The breathtaking beauty of the High Arctic and Greenland

Our 26-day voyage takes us “above” the North American continent to the frozen far north. As we head up from Alaska through the famed Beaufort Sea and Bering Strait, we pass into Western Arctic Canada, where we’ll explore the western section of the Northwest Passage. From here on in, it’s pure expedition as we transit to Eastern Arctic Canada, where you’ll experience a pristine and remote wilderness featuring surreal vistas of frozen sea ice. We then emerge into Baffin Bay and sail to West Greenland, where you’ll encounter natural beauty like nowhere else.

Setting Out from Scenic Seattle

Enjoy the city before your expedition cruise begins

The adventure begins in the Emerald City of Seattle, on the Pacific coast of the United States.

Why not arrive early and head to the Seattle Aquarium to see sea otters and a giant Pacific octopus? Or, for incredible views of Puget Sound and the surrounding mountains, take a stroll through the nine-acre Olympic Sculpture Park, admiring the work of renowned artists as you go. And for a feast of the senses, visit the famous Pike Place Market. Operating for over a century, this lively farmer’s market boasts everything from buskers and bars to salmon-throwing fishmongers!

You’ll spend the night here in Seattle before your connecting flight to Alaska the next day.

cruise companies greenland

There's no place like Nome

Setting off on your adventure

Today you’ll take an early flight from Seattle to Nome, Alaska, where your state-of-the art expedition ship awaits to take you on a journey through the famed Northwest Passage and beyond.

Prospectors first came to Nome in 1898, and people still hunt for gold here today. You'll see evidence of the Gold Rush era all around, including abandoned dredges, turn-of-the century steam engines and old railroad tracks, lending the town a unique and intriguing atmosphere.

You’ll be in good company as you explore the town. Wyatt Earp, the famous sheriff, opened a saloon here. Nome was also the end point of three of Roald Amundsen's great polar expeditions.

Upon boarding the ship and after collecting your complimentary expedition jacket, it's time to check out your cabin, meet the Expedition Team and explore your new home-away-from-home. Your adventure has truly begun!

Join your Expedition Team for insightful lectures as we journey through the Beaufort Sea towards Amundsen Gulf, the gates to the Northwest Passage, on this eastbound transit.  The highlights of this transit include:

The Bering Strait

The International Date Line

Sailing across the Beaufort Sea

Exploration and Adventure

Spend eight days exploring the Western section of the fabled Northwest Passage

Our excursions begin on Day 7 as we enter the Western Canadian Arctic. Over the next eight days, in this section of our voyage we’ll transit through three distinct regions—Nunavut, Northwest Territories and Yukon—and two traditional Inuit Territories—Inuvialuit and Nunavut.

During our time here, we anticipate up to five days of shore excursions and four transit days. Excursion stops and local highlights we hope to be able to visit include:

Herschel Island

Smoking Hills

Ulukhaktok

Coronation Gulf

Cambridge Bay (Iqaluktuuttiaq)

Gjoa Haven (Uqsuqtuuk)

For more detailed information about each of these places, along with our explorer's guide to the Northwest Passage, see our Travel Guide .

Into Bellot Strait

Navigate the dividing line between west and east

The “Rubicon” of the Canadian Arctic that divides west from east is the infamous Bellot Strait. This narrow body of water separates the northernmost part of mainland North America from Somerset Island, one of the largest islands in the Canadian Arctic archipelago.

Bellot Strait is approximately 15 nautical miles long and just over half a mile wide at its narrowest point. Our ability to navigate this passage will be determined by ice and weather conditions.

cruise companies greenland

The Eastern Canadian Arctic

Explore the eastern stretch of the Passage

On the eastern shores of Somerset Island, we find ourselves in the Eastern Canadian Arctic. The main waterway of this area is Lancaster Sound (Tallurutiup Imanga), the eastern gates to the Northwest Passage.

This chapter of our exploration is likely to be action-packed, with excursions planned on each of the five days we hope to spend in and around this area. Remember: all our excursion plans depend on the weather and ice but, conditions permitting, our days will be filled with excitement and discovery.

Excursion stops and local highlights we hope to share with you include:

Fort Ross

Prince Leopold Island (Appait)

Beechey Island (Iluvilik)

Croker Bay

Dundas Harbour

Pond Inlet (Mittimatalik)

For more detailed information about each of these places, along with our explorer’s guide to the Northwest Passage, see our Travel Guide .

Crossing Baffin Bay

Watch for wildlife and get involved in Citizen Science

Leaving Nunavut behind, our expedition cruise continues to Greenland across Baffin Bay. The Expedition Team will continue their on-board lectures on topics such as the wildlife of the Arctic, Inuit culture and the history of exploration in this region.

The Wonders of West Greenland

Discover the magical beauty of Greenland

The final chapter of our journey encompasses the majestic coast of West Greenland.

We will begin by sailing into Disko Bay—a haven for whales and seals. Over the next three days, you’ll experience some of the most iconic sites in all of Greenland. Our objectives include:

  Ilulissat

Nestled at the edge of the magnificent Ilulissat Icefjord, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is Ilulissat. Here you’ll find an ever-changing gallery of passing icebergs set against a backdrop of colorful houses. In town you can visit a multitude of shops selling local crafts, and on the outskirts walking trails take you along the epic icefjord.

  Sisimiut

Sisimiut is Greenland’s second city and is situated in a spectacular location just above the Arctic Circle. This area has history spanning more than 4,500 years, and old traditions are alive and well.

Learn more about ancient Saqqaq artifacts in the local museum, or stretch your legs on a hike.  If you're looking for a special souvenir, pick up a scarf, hat or mittens made of qiviut , the inner wool of the musk ox that’s said to be 10 times warmer than sheep’s wool.

Evighedsfjord

As we head north, we plan to offer an exploration day in the magical and pristine Evighedsfjord near Maniitsoq. Each day, we’ll determine which adventures we can take part in.

The “Fjord of Eternity” is fed by an ice cap that calves huge icebergs into its 2,300 ft-deep waters. It's surrounded by mist-cloaked mountains with beautiful white ridges, punctuated by crystal blue ice caves.

Old and New in Nuuk

End your voyage in colorful Nuuk

Today we arrive in Nuuk, Greenland’s colorful capital. It has a population of 18,000 and boasts a striking mix of old and new buildings.

We’ll explore this fascinating city, comparing the old buildings—such as Hans Egede House and Nuuk Cathedral—with the ultra-modern architecture of the Parliament of Greenland.

Your voyage ends with a flight from Nuuk to Reykjavík and an overnight stay.

Cosmopolitan Reykjavík

Discover Iceland's modern capital

Enjoy breakfast at the hotel and discover the city before connecting to your onwards flight home.

Packed full of art, culture and history, Iceland’s capital is a delight to explore. Visit Laugavegur, the main shopping street, and head towards the striking Hallgrímskirkja church. Or why not explore the many galleries and museums dotted around the city?

If you have the time, we recommend booking a Post-Program with us and discovering some of Iceland’s natural highlights.

GREENLAND CRUISES

Greenland Cruises offers shore excursions and other services to cruise ships visiting Greenland during the summer and fall.

The owner, Ivik Knudsen-Ostermann, has great experience in organizing tours/excursions all over the coast, especially in Sisimiut where the company has its base.

Greenland Cruises has partners in almost every community along the West Coast.

If Greenland Cruises doesn’t offer services in a town Greenland Cruises will be more than happy to help the ship get in contact with local tour operators or whatever is necessary to make the visit a good experience.

Guided sightseeing

Enjoy listening to the guide explaining about everyday life, the history and the colorful culture.

Enhance your knowledge on the nature, the Inuit people, buildings, history and the activities of daily life.

Greenland Cruises organizes sightseeing in Nuuk, Narsarsuaq, Sisimiut, boat tours out among the icebergs, tours to the ice fiords, helicopter tours and hiking tours. Try the hike up mountain Palasip Qaqqa, the “priest’s mountain”, a 500 meter tall mountain close to Sisimiut.

On your way up to the top, enjoy the sight of the local wildlife and the surrounding greenery or take a tour out to Tele Island where Inuit people in earlier times hunted their prey. Visit the harbour and the local artists.

Getting close to the population

Experience choir singing, drum dancing and kayak shows right where you come ashore. Greenland Cruises offers many events that focus on traditions and culture.

Ancient traditions are kept and expressed when guests arrive to visit the land and its cities.

Experience the local choirs performing, wearing the beautiful national costume. There are usually 10 to 15 singers in a choir, and they are happy to perform in the area by the museum or onboard the ships at the harbour.

Greenland Cruises has contacts in towns as well as settlements and will be able to arrange for events per request. Experience the busy life at the harbour, the motley collection of tiny motorboats in a variety of colors and small fishing trawlers.

Travel the way the Greenlanders have done for centuries – via ocean shipping routes. Greenland Cruises organizes excursions in West and South Greenland.

A meeting with Greenland from the seaside offers the sight of icebergs of all sizes, whales at play, and impressions of life in towns and settlements.

Seat yourself comfortably on deck and just enjoy the view. Upon landing, visit the city or enjoy an event that might have been planned such as mask and drum dancing, a kayak show and choir singing.

Go on a tour with Greenland Cruises to the famous Ice fiord which is on UNCESO’s World Heritage site list, or go on a hike to the abandoned settlement of Sermermiut. Sermermiut’s history stretches back more than 4,000 years.

1. Embark on an Iceberg Boat Tour

One of the highlights of visiting Nanortalik is the opportunity to get up close with the majestic icebergs that dot its surrounding waters. An iceberg boat tour offers an unparalleled experience, allowing you to witness the incredible ice formations that have broken off from Greenland’s glaciers. These floating wonders, sculpted by nature into various shapes and sizes, create a mesmerizing landscape that is both awe-inspiring and humbling.

As you glide through the icy waters, keep your eyes peeled for wildlife, including seals, whales, and a variety of seabirds that call this frigid paradise home. The tour also provides a unique perspective on the impact of climate change, showcasing the beauty of the Arctic while highlighting the importance of preserving these fragile ecosystems.

2. Discover the Tasermiut Fjord by Boat

For those who crave adventure and natural beauty, a boat tour of the Tasermiut Fjord is a must. Often referred to as the “Arctic Patagonia,” this fjord is one of Greenland’s most spectacular natural attractions. The journey takes you through a dramatic landscape of towering mountains, deep valleys, and stunning glaciers that descend into the crystal-clear waters of the fjord.

Already planning to see the next solar eclipse in 2026? What travelers need to know.

Umbraphiles feeling the post-eclipse blues should start checking the expiration date on their passports.

The next total solar eclipse is set to happen on Aug. 12, 2026, over Greenland, Iceland, Spain, Russia and a small part of Portugal, according to NASA .

In North America, only a partial eclipse will be visible, so if April’s event made you an eclipse chaser and you want to see totality, you’ll need to head overseas.

Start the day smarter. Get all the news you need in your inbox each morning.

Here’s what you’ll need to know before packing your bags:

Do you need a passport or visa for the best destination?

The path of totality for the 2026 eclipse mostly goes through places Americans can travel visa-free with their passport, so long as they’re planning to stay for less than 90 days.

Spain, Portugal, Iceland and Greenland all allow visa-free tourist travel for U.S. passport holders.

Spain, Portugal and Iceland are also members of the Schengen Area, which allows for visa-free travel in much of Europe, meaning if you decide to make a multi-country trip out of your eclipse adventure, you won’t need to clear customs if you’re coming from much of the rest of Europe, either.

One major change for travelers to Europe from the U.S., however, is that electronic preauthorization will become a requirement beginning in mid-2025. The European Travel Information and Authorization System (ETIAS) requirement will apply to all four open countries in the path of totality.

Depending on the state of the Ukraine war, travel to Russia may or may not be an option for most Americans by 2026, so it’s unclear what the paperwork requirements will be by then.

Is it better to see it from the beach?

Beaches can be a great place to see the eclipse because there are few natural obstacles blocking observers’ views of the sky. The 2026 path of totality passes over beaches on Spain’s northern and southeastern coasts, as well as over islands in the Mediterranean Sea including Mallorca, Menorca and Ibiza. The eclipse will also pass over coastal areas in Greenland and Iceland, according to the National Solar Observatory .

Cruising Altitude: What it was like to see the eclipse from a plane

Will there be eclipse cruises or flights?

Almost certainly, although most operators have not announced specific plans yet.

Cruise lines will also offer more viewing opportunities. Princess Cruises “has created a bespoke itinerary aboard Sky Princess to position the ship near Spain on that date,” according to a spokesperson for the line. The cruise will open for bookings on Princess’s website on May 23.

Cunard Line has sailings on its Queen Mary 2 , Queen Victoria and Queen Anne vessels that will put passengers in prime spots to watch .

'The ship can move': Why you should watch next solar eclipses from a cruise ship

Holland America Line is also planning multiple sailings around the event, though details are still to be announced. “Guests have reacted positively to our 2024 eclipse cruises and with the next full eclipse in 2026 we plan to have three sailings in Europe that will align with the path of the eclipse,” Paul Grigsby, the line's vice president of Deployment & Itinerary Planning, previously told USA TODAY in an email.

The totality of an eclipse is never long enough. My first total solar eclipse experience in 2017 made for the shortest two minutes of my life: the sun transforming into a blazing diamond ring, the beautiful delirium of darkness, that perfect circle in the sky. Before I knew it, the eclipse was over—and my friends and I were plotting how we could catch our next.

During my second total eclipse in Ohio, I savored nearly double that time—four minutes of totality. Those extra moments gave me time to tune into the full sensory experience. As birds slowed their songs, crickets filled the false twilight with their chirping. All the people around me fell silent amid the cool, still air, and the corona of the sun radiated and wisped above. It wasn’t long after those beautiful four minutes ended that I began scheming, again, about my next opportunity to relive the cosmic experience. Now, I’ve fully embraced my identity as an umbraphile —literally, a “shadow lover,” but better known as someone who chases total solar eclipses.

For umbraphiles like myself based in the United States, the next total solar eclipse to hit the US is in 2033—although it will only grace the western half of Alaska , along with Russia . In 2044, another total solar eclipse will swoop across Canada into Montana and the Dakotas . The next “Great American Eclipse” to cut across a wide swath of the nation won’t arrive until 2045 , though that one will stretch all the way from Northern California to Florida , across Utah , Colorado , Georgia , and many more states.

If you can’t bear to wait more than two decades for that stunning event, the good news is that many more eclipses will occur before then—you just have to go abroad to catch them. Whether you saw the 2024 total solar eclipse and are eager to plan your next trip to the path of totality, or you missed it and want to discover what all the hype is about, consider this your guide to seeing a total solar eclipse in the next four years.

In 2026, travelers to Iceland will have the chance to catch the solar eclipse and northern lights on one trip.

August 12, 2026: The Arctic, Iceland, and Spain

Your earliest chance to catch another total solar eclipse is August 12, 2026 , when the path of totality will curve northeast across the Arctic Ocean and south through remote eastern Greenland , terminating in the Balearic Sea just east of Mallorca . While there are several worthy destinations for umbraphiles during the 2026 eclipse, the totality experience will be relatively short, lasting only 1-2 minutes, depending on where you are within the path.

One spot to add to your eclipse planning list is Western Iceland , where you may also be able to catch Northern Lights on your trip to enhance the cosmic experience. The capital of Reykjavik sits on the edge of totality, making it a fine and accessible viewing destination. The downside? Totality will only last a minute there. To extend the experience, head about three hours west by car. Snæfellsjökull National Park —a seaside park named for a volcano and glacier—will experience 2 minutes and 10 seconds of totality. Stay in the nearby hamlet of Búðir, about 30 minutes away. Or head to the village of Patreksfjordur in the Westfjords, about a five-hour drive from Reykjavik for a similarly longer totality.

If a more Mediterranean eclipse experience appeals, the spot to be is Spain. The path of totality will also clip northeastern Portugal . In northern Spain, the medieval cities of Oviedo (1 minute and 49 seconds totality) or Burgo (1 minute and 44 seconds totality) are good places to watch, right in the center of the totality path. For a more urban experience, consider Zaragoza (1 minute and 24 seconds of totality) or seaside Valencia (1 minute totality).

Perhaps the most unique place to take in the 2026 eclipse in Spain is upon the island of Mallorca. Partying in Palma, reveling in secluded beaches, or overlooking the sea upon the island’s limestone cliffs would all make enviable ways to take in the 1 minute and 36 seconds of totality. With around 300 days of sunshine annually, Mallorca is also a safe bet for clear skies. If you prefer to leave the planning to the pros, consider a guided eclipse trip through a company like Sirius Travel , which is also offering an Iceland eclipse trip. Note that some other guided 2026 eclipse tours are already sold out , so don’t wait to reserve.

One of the most unusual places to witness an eclipse is aboard a cruise ship , and there are already several potential options available—after all, this eclipse is only a couple years out and plans are underway. Bundle up and hop aboard the Greenland Solar Eclipse cruise hosted by Albatros Expeditions . The 13-day itinerary includes a tour of fjords and glaciers, a visit to Nuuk, and of course, the 2-minute, 17-second totality experience (starting at $19,600 per person). Cunard is offering three solar eclipse cruise experiences : one through Norway and Iceland, and two more near Spain and the Mediterranean.

Luxor, Egypt, will see over six minutes of totality during the August 2027 eclipse.

August 2, 2027: Northern Africa and the Middle East

Just a year later, another eclipse will travel across Northern Africa and the western edge of the Middle East —this one with a prodigiously long totality time. The eclipse will cross over the southern tip of Spain and Gibraltar, which will enjoy 4 minutes and 28 seconds of totality.

Across Northern Africa, several cities make excellent viewing points. The beaches of Tangier , Morocco, will take in 4 minutes and 50 seconds totality. In Tunisia , the ancient oasis of Gafsa will clock over 5 minutes of totality.

For the longest totality time, consider Luxor, Egypt , which will see a stunning 6 minutes and 22 seconds of darkness, likely amid sunny skies. This is only about a minute shy of the known record for longest totality time : 7 minutes and 28 seconds, back in 743 B.C. Besides, could anything eclipse the mystical sight of a pyramid than a literal eclipse darkening the skies above the Ancient Egyptian monuments?

Cruises and guided tours for the 2027 eclipse are also already on offer. Take a cruise through the Mediterranean with Eclipse Tours and witness totality at sea (starting at $4,999), or tour Morocco and enjoy the eclipse from a beach with Astro Tours (price unlisted).

Head to New Zealand's Otago Peninsula in 2028 to experience three minutes of totality.

July 22, 2028: Australia and New Zealand

If you can wait four years, consider an eclipse trip to Oceania . This eclipse will traverse central Australia and southern New Zealand , and there are many incredible spots to consider within the path for your viewing experience, whether you prefer to dance in the darkness or be immersed in the wild.

In Australia, Sydney is smack dab in the middle of the 2028 path , with 3 minutes and 49 seconds of totality. While no festivals or events are in the works yet, have no doubt Australia will rise to the occasion. For a more nature-based experience, consider the ancient rock formations and trails of Mirima National Park ; stay in the nearby town of Kununurra. This area will enjoy just under three minutes of totality. Of course, an Australia eclipse-themed cruise already awaits, too, though the eclipse itself is to be viewed on land (starting at $14,500).

In New Zealand, enjoy nearly three minutes of totality include Queenstown and Dunedin. Take in the New Zealand eclipse from the stunning shores of Lake Wakatipu of Queenstown, where you can chase the rush of an eclipse with one of the world’s highest bungee jumps . Amid the Scottish-meets-Maori heritage of Dunedin, bookend the eclipse with a visit to the Larnach Castle or the Otago Peninsula and its penguins.

Tips for planning an eclipse trip around the world

You’re not the only traveler drawn to the elusive experience of a total eclipse—which is why places in the path of totality tend to experience a massive spike in tourism . Lodging books early, prices surge, rental cars run out, and those who fail to plan in advance are often left high and dry—or forced to spend a small fortune.

My advice on preparing for an eclipse trip in the US applies doubly when it comes to an international voyage to the path of totality. Here are a few key pointers before you plan your trip, whether to the Arctic, Spain, Egypt, or Australia:

It’s never too early to book: Some tours are already sold out, while hotel reservations are sure to go fast. Make your reservations as soon as you can, especially for the 2026 eclipse—you can always cancel later if your trip falls through. This applies to rental cars and flights as well.

Give yourself a buffer around the eclipse: Don’t plan to show up the day before the eclipse or day of, nor should you plan to depart the day of or day after. Adding some wiggle room will allow you to maximize the serenity of the experience, rather than sabotage it with the chaos of eclipse travel.

Get to your viewing spot at least a few hours in advance: This way your plans won’t be foiled by any unexpected traffic, you can find the perfect perch, and you’ll have time to set up any camera tripods or telescopes.

Hold on to your eclipse glasses—or buy them early: Don’t plan to pick up a pair at your destination. And make sure they’re ISO certified .

Finally, turn your eclipse travels into a longer trip of about a week or two. Look into local observatories or stargazing tours to up the astronomical ante. A few months ahead, research eclipse festivals, events, and viewing parties, if that’s of interest. Meet some fellow travelers who you might be interested in viewing with. Then, one to six minutes of totality will be just the pinnacle of your celestially inspired trip, rather than the entirety of it.

Are you still a little giddy from the magical moments of totality during Monday’s solar eclipse? Or did clouds swoop in to block your view? Maybe you just couldn’t make it to the path of totality this time. No matter what, the question now is “ Where and when will it happen again?”

“People who have never seen it before, the first words out of their mouth after the totality ends is ‘I’ve got to see another one, this is incredible, this is unbelievable.’ That is when you become addicted to these things and end up traveling no matter where the next one is,” said Joseph Rao, an eclipse chaser and guest lecturer at the Hayden Planetarium.

So, if like Mr. Rao, you’ve developed a raging case of umbraphilia — the love of eclipses — you’ll have three chances over the next four years to see the moon blot out the sun. The first, on Aug. 12, 2026, will start above Greenland, then strafe the west coast of Iceland and move along the Atlantic Ocean and over Spain. Almost a year later, on Aug. 2, 2027, another will skirt the Mediterranean coast of North Africa then cross Egypt and part of the Arabian Peninsula. The third, on July 22, 2028, will cut across Australia and the southern tip of New Zealand.

Future Eclipses

Eclipse chasers will have several more chances this decade to view a total solar eclipse .

cruise companies greenland

Last week, as Victoria Sahami , the owner of Sirius Travel , was preparing to guide a group of tourists in Mazatlán, Mexico, for Monday’s big event, she was also planning for these other upcoming eclipses. Ms. Sahami joined the ranks of the eclipse-obsessed when she witnessed one in Venezuela in the 1990s. “Like many people, I was hooked. There was no going back,” she said.

Total solar eclipses happen fairly regularly — about every one to two years — in locations scattered around the world. “That’s the great thing about them: You wind up in places that you don’t normally go,” Ms. Sahami said.

A major spoiler is weather, which will be a big variable in the 2026 eclipse — one Greenland, Iceland and Spain will see.

“Iceland normally has a lot of cloud during that time of year,” said Paul Maley , who runs Ring of Fire Expeditions . “The data shows Spain to have the higher good-weather prospects of all three. However, the sun is low in the sky and the eclipse ends as the sun hits the horizon at sunset.”

Because of Iceland’s mercurial meteorology, Ring of Fire Expeditions is going all in on Spain, with a 10-day excursion on the mainland. Sirius Travel is offering not only a five-day trip to Majorca but also an eight-day tour around Iceland. It will be based in Reykjavik, and the itinerary will remain flexible on the day of the eclipse so the tour can easily pivot toward the location with the least cloud cover. Ms. Sahami recommends the trip for those who already have a few eclipses under their belt and would be happy just to take in the sights of Iceland if the weather doesn’t cooperate.

The 2027 eclipse, on the other hand, promises to be truly stellar: Luxor, Egypt — the site of numerous ancient temples as well as the Valleys of the Kings and Queens — sits right in the middle of the path of totality and will be bathed in darkness for a full 6 minutes 23 seconds. Weather-wise, it is what Ms. Sahami called “a slam dunk.” “You know you’re going to see it. You know that you’re not going to get any clouds,” she said.

But for all its potential, those considering Egypt should be aware that the State Department has a Level 3 “Reconsider Travel” warning for the country because of the risk of terrorism.

The 2028 eclipse will darken the skies over Sydney, Australia, for 3 minutes 49 seconds. It will be the first time the city has experienced a total solar eclipse since 1857. Ms. Sahami has her eyes on a trip based out of there, while Mr. Maley has chartered a cruise ship off the northwest coast of Australia. It will be winter there, he said, but that isn’t likely to mean bad eclipse-viewing weather.

If you want to see any (or all) of these eclipses, you should get started on planning and booking now, particularly if you want to sign up for a trip organized by a tour company. One of Sirius Travel’s excursions to Luxor is already full.

Scrutinize refund policies and look into insuring your trip. Several companies will fully refund your deposit if you cancel a year in advance. A lot can happen, Ms. Sahami said, “but if you think you’re going to go, why not?”

Cruise resumes manual driving as next step in return to driverless mission

cruise companies greenland

Cruise was founded in 2013 with a clear and focused mission: to make transportation safer and more accessible. In the ten years that followed, we’ve worked hard to build advanced self-driving technology and provided hundreds of thousands of driverless trips to riders on complex city streets in San Francisco, Phoenix, Austin, Houston and elsewhere.

In October 2023, we paused operations of our fleet to focus on rebuilding trust with regulators and the communities we serve, and to redesign our approach to safety. We’ve made significant progress, guided by new company leadership, recommendations from third-party experts, and a focus on a close partnership with the communities in which our vehicles operate. We are committed to this improvement as a continuous effort.

Looking to the next chapter, our goal is to resume driverless operations. As we continue working to rebuild trust and determine the city where we will scale driverless, we also remain focused on continuing to improve our performance and overall safety approach. To that end, Cruise is resuming manual driving to create maps and gather road information in select cities, starting in Phoenix. This work is done using human-driven vehicles without autonomous systems engaged, and is a critical step for validating our self-driving systems as we work towards returning to our driverless mission. This will help inform where we ultimately will resume driverless operations.

Cruise has a strong history in Phoenix and it is home to a large number of Cruise employees. It’s a city that supports AV and transportation innovation, and Phoenix leaders strive to ensure the metro area is an incubator for advanced technology. We plan to expand this effort to other select cities as we continue to engage with officials and community leaders.

Adaptive Fleet Learning

Cruise’s AV stack is based on AI technology that learns from information gathered through our driving experience and retrains and evolves our models continuously. The fleet learns from every intersection, construction zone, and road sign it encounters, and applies that knowledge to other environments and scenarios – much the same as a human driver learns, but with far more data and the ability to impart that continuous learning across the entire fleet.

During our operational pause over the last few months, Cruise maintained ongoing and extensive testing in complex, dynamic simulated environments and on closed courses, enabling continuous retraining and improvement. Now, we are building on that work to create high-quality semantic maps and gather road information to ensure future operations meet elevated safety and performance targets. And because no two cities are the same, we plan to conduct this manual and supervised driving in multiple cities - starting with Phoenix - to expose our AVs to a diverse set of driving environments and conditions as we prepare for future driverless service.

Steps Prior to Driverless Operations

The first step is identifying high fidelity location data for road features and map information like speed limits, stop signs, traffic lights, lane paint, right turn only lanes and more. Having current and accurate information will help an autonomous vehicle understand where it is and the location of certain road features. We also measure our perception and prediction systems against our elevated performance criteria, using trained safety drivers as a benchmark. At this stage, no autonomous systems are engaged and the vehicles will not carry public passengers.

Next, we’ll validate our AV’s end-to-end performance against our rigorous safety and AV performance requirements through supervised autonomous driving on public roads, in addition to the ongoing simulation and closed course driving we do. During this phase, the Cruise vehicles will drive themselves and a safety driver is present behind the wheel to monitor and take over if needed.

Safety is the defining principle for everything we do and will guide our progress through this process. As we begin this work, we have requirements in place that not only cover the safety criteria, functions and roadworthiness of the vehicle, but also include robust incident response protocols and extensive training and ongoing performance monitoring for the operators behind the wheel.

Commitments to Safety and Our Communities

Over the past several weeks we have communicated directly with officials, first responders, and community leaders in cities we’ve previously operated in to share updates on our path forward. We are committed to safely deploying our technology in close collaboration with officials and communities at every step.

Our goal is to earn trust and build partnerships with the communities such that, ultimately, we resume fully driverless operations in collaboration with a city.

As part of our commitment to improve our operations Cruise has implemented the following measures:

Established new leadership, and engaged more closely with experienced advisors from GM to support safety, legal, regulatory, and communications functions.

Hired an experienced chief safety officer to guide improved safety processes and procedures throughout the organization.

Established a cross-disciplinary regulatory team to guide engagement with regulators in regard to incident reporting.

Reviewed and strengthened key internal safety governance processes to incorporate more robust cross-functional review and leadership accountability.

Work is also underway to establish important systems and processes for ensuring safe operations across the company including:

Reforming and updating incident response and crisis management protocols to ensure more consistent, effective and transparent response.

Renewing internal training and reinforcing safety culture systems.

Reevaluating and reestablishing our safety target for supervised and driverless operations.

Reengaging with first responders to facilitate ongoing trainings for each precinct and fire house in the areas we intend to operate in.

Looking Ahead

We believe AVs will save lives and significantly reduce the number and severity of accidents on America’s and Arizona’s roads every year. AVs will also improve lives - including creating  convenient and safe transportation options for the elderly and those with disabilities. As we begin this journey, we look forward to partnering with local communities to jointly achieve our shared mission of making transportation safer for all.
