ITIC Partnered With WTM Africa Will Hold African Tourism Investment Summit In Cape Town

Key Economic Trends And Topics Will Be Discussed During The African Tourism Investment Summit On The 11th And 12th April In Cape Town To Bolster Investment In The Continent

ITIC (International Tourism Investment Conference), in partnership with World Travel Market Africa, will hold a cutting-edge Summit on ‘Investing in Africa’s future tourism growth and prosperity’ from the 11 th to the 13th April 2022.

This event will be staged in a hybrid model (in-person and virtual) at the Cape Town International Convention Centre in South Africa, with the objective of supporting global but also regional investors in being the first movers to seize the new emerging opportunities of the recovering tourism industry of the African continent.

Chairman of ITIC and former Secretary-General of UNWTO Dr Taleb Rifai said, “During the pandemic, intra-African travel has been key for its survival. Investing in Travel and Tourism goes beyond its significant economic contribution. Investing in tourism, to me, is not just an extremely wise and correct business proposition; it is investing in the future of the planet, in the future of mankind, and after all, we all come out of Africa. Tourism is a force for good as well as peace.”

Several critical topics will be covered by authoritative voices of the African tourism industry, namely Tourism Ministers Hon. Philda Kereng of Botswana, Hon. Najib Balala of Kenya, Hon. Moses M Vilakati of Eswatini, Hon. Memunatu Pratt of Sierra Leone, Hon. Edmund Bartlett of Jamaica, Hon. David Maynier, Minister of Economic Development & Opportunities, Ministry of Finance and Economic Opportunities, Western Cape Government, just to name a few. Key tourism and financial services stakeholders will participate actively in the summit to boost investment and rebuild the future of Africa’s tourism industry.

“ITIC creates the conducive platform that enables investors and project owners or developers to connect and come up with mutually beneficial achievements that integrate the concerns of the different parties with respect to the preservation of the environment and cultural heritage as well as social inclusion and a fair return on investment”, points out ITIC’s Group CEO, Ibrahim Ayoub.

Moreover, one of the key differentiating elements this year will be the focus on regional cross-border investments. “We have already engaged in negotiations with financial institutions so that they can act as enablers of tourism projects that will benefit the people of Africa at large”, adds the Group CEO of ITIC.

“The African continent is brimming with opportunities, new ideas and innovative projects. Africa Travel Week is proud and excited to bring together project owners, developers, and investors to help make these projects a reality. We look forward to hosting key professionals in the private and public sector, who will highlight investment trends, industry challenges, and opportunities for our beautiful continent,” says Martin Hiller, Creative + Content Director: Travel, Tourism and Creative Industries at RX Africa.

On the 13th of April, B2B meetings between project owners or developers and the ITIC Team will be scheduled. The Investment team invites tourism projects owners or developers in quest of investment to submit their projects so that our team can screen them in the Deal Room it has set up at WTM. ITIC team will provide actionable advice in view of attendees striking mutually beneficial agreements and channelling investments into their projects.

The Western Cape is poised to emerge as a global hub for adventure tourism, a niche within the global tourism sector that is anticipated to be valued at $4.6-trillion by 2032, a recent report by Wesgro, the official tourism, trade and investment promotion agency for Cape Town and the province, shows.

Adventure tourism, as defined by the Adventure Travel Trade Association, involves trips with at least two of the following elements: physical activity, natural environment and cultural immersion.

This niche divides activities into hard and soft categories. Hard activities attract thrill-seekers wanting greater challenges, such as water adventures, caving, climbing and skydiving.

Conversely, soft activities encompass safe and easy-to-learn pursuits like hiking or cycling.

The ‘Adventure Tourism: Market Potential in South Africa and the Western Cape’ study, conducted by Wesgro, draws upon data from a recent report by Allied Market Research.

According to the global market intelligence provider, in 2022, the adventure tourism market was valued at $366.7-billion globally, with projections indicating a considerable rise to $4.6-trillion by 2032.

This growth is attributed to the increasing demand for adventure experiences worldwide.

While the precise size of the local adventure tourism market remains unquantified, it is on the rise, especially considering the recent surge in global interest in adventure activities, Wesgro points out.

Recent data from South African Tourism, published in 2023, highlights a shift in consumer preferences towards “real-time” experiences over material acquisitions while travelling.

Adventure tourism stands out as a rapidly growing market in the country, with a unique focus on sustainability, conservation and environmental protection, Wesgro avers.

This aligns with the global trend where tourists prefer destinations emphasising these values while offering outdoor, nature, scenic beauty, and adrenaline experiences, it adds.

Wesgro’s report points out the rapid growth of adventure tourism in South Africa, along with a growing recognition among industry stakeholders of its economic value.

Tailormade adventure experiences have the potential to catalyse the entire tourism sector, noted as a considerable job generator, contributing 5% to 6% to gross domestic product in the past decade, Wesgro highlights.

The Wesgro report underlines the Western Cape’s ideal positioning in the global adventure tourism market, attributing this to the region’s growing emphasis on sustainability and the promotion of harmony between humans and nature.

In terms of source markets, Europe led the pack in 2022, comprising 63.7% of tourists enjoying adventure experiences in South Africa, followed by North America (16.2%) and Africa (11.3%).

The Western Cape stood out as the preferred destination for 47.4% of tourists visiting the country, for whom adventure activities were among their top type of experience choices, ranking fourth after eating out, shopping, and beach experiences.

Notably, adventure tourism has the power to deepen regional spread and extend length of stay, as many adventure activities are found in the wide-open spaces of the province, Wesgro asserts.

CEO Wrenelle Stander emphasises the need for a comprehensive understanding of factors influencing tourists’ decisions to partake in adventure tourism experiences.

By identifying these aspects, operators can develop tailored adventures catering to the specific needs of their target audience, she explains.

Stander also mentions the importance of aligning marketing strategies with tourists’ preferences.

For instance, Europeans highly value creativity, recognising it as a key driver of innovation and growth, offering an opportunity for marketing experiences that resonate with these values.

Africa Travel Content Creators Conference set to hold in South Africa

W ith the success recorded at the maiden edition of Africa Travel Content Creators Conference, hosted in Lagos, Nigeria, the organisers have secured a host country for the second edition.

Preparations for the MICE show is already in top gear to converge on the city of the Table Mountain, Cape Town, South Africa.

Speaking with Travelpulse and MICE, the Founder of Taste of Africa Vibes, Mr Jibola Oluseye Abati, who is also the Convener of the Africa Travel Content Creators Conference, said that effort are in top gear to host the South Africa version of the event, adding that it is an African project aimed at reprojecting the continent in good light through travel content creators.

According to Abati: “The world is so vast that there are many options to choose from, so travellers will usually search for good content to find the perfect place, adventure, hotel, attraction, restaurant, etc. The travel industry creates all types of content to attract visitors and offer them a great experience to generate more content.

“So to effectively promote Africa better, we need to get our content right and to do thing the right way we must have well-equipped content creators to do this. This is what we are trying to do through the conference and by taking it around Africa, it will help to broaden the scope of message to promote Africa right.

“For this year event which is going to Cape Town in South Africa, we have secured our venue and trying to put other things in place to make the rainbow nation version of the conference a grand one.

“Travel content can influence thousands of customer decisions by aligning proper strategic approaches. Travellers fancy broadening their horizons and learning more about their favorite cultures. Here, you can stimulate long-lasting relationships and guide them through an inspirational journey!

“So we are coming out with the full schedule in the coming weeks for people who will be attending the South Africa edition. Already, we have been receiving green light from different Travel content creators who have signified interest to attend and also to share their experiences.”

Abati disclosed to Travelpulse and MICE that Africans are happy to leverage on the opportunities the travel content creators conference is expected to break in the promotion and image space of Africa.

The  Cape Town Declaration on Responsible Tourism in Destinations  was the fruit of an official side-event of the World Summit on Sustainable Development (WSSD) held in Johannesburg in 2002. The conference brought together people from the industry, governments, and inter-governmental organisations to reflect on the South African national policy commitment to Responsible Tourism and the Responsible Tourism policy of the UK's Association of Independent Tour Operators.

Thirty years previously, the UN had held the first Conference on the Human Environment in Stockholm, in 1972, and  declared  that a

"point has been reached in history when we must shape our actions throughout the world with more prudent care for their environmental consequences. Through ignorance or indifference, we can do massive and irreversible harm to the earthly environment on which our life and wellbeing depend."

Earth Summits followed in Nairobi in 1982 and Rio in 1992. As the millennium approached, there was increasing concern that progress was not being made rapidly enough; that the concepts of sustainable development and sustainability were vague aspirations often used merely to legitimate an action or investment. The words were widely used for greenwashing, with little more than lip service paid to the ambition.

The Cape Town Declaration celebrated the world's diversity and its broad economic, social and environmental agenda and called upon all stakeholders at the destination level "to take responsibility for achieving sustainable tourism and create better places for people to live in and for people to visit."

At the core of responsibility is

"transparent and auditable reporting of progress towards achieving responsible tourism targets and benchmarking is essential to the integrity and credibility of our work, to the ability of all stakeholders to assess progress, and to enable consumers to exercise effective choice."

The Declaration called for a more balanced relationship between hosts and guests in destinations, a balance that required government, local communities and businesses to cooperate on practical initiatives to tackle issues in destinations. Any form of tourism can be more responsible.
