While known for its laid-back pace and cozy setting, there’s actually lots things to do in San Luis Obispo , whether you’re young or old, athletic or more into a scenic drive.

Hikers exploring the beautiful wilderness that surrounds San Luis Obispo

California has long been tied to fun in the sun. And in San Luis Obispo, that sun is often accompanied by 75-degree flip-flop weather that makes everyone else in the country jealous.

Outdoor enthusiasts will appreciate that this is a pedestrian and bicycle-friendly city, with lots of hiking and bicycling trails, many offering spectacular mountain views. San Luis Obispo features fun opportunities for golf , and horseback riding  while neighboring communities offer beach fun that includes surfing , kayaking and whale watching.

Every Thursday night, take advantage of a traffic-free chance to stroll through SLO’s quaint downtown and enjoy great food and music at the Downtown SLO Farmers’ Market – a long-time favorite of locals and visitors.

Enjoying some local brews in San Luis Obispo

Beer and Wine

Locally made wine has been a feature of San Luis Obispo since the padres grew grapes for sacramental wines in the 1770s.

Today, wine enthusiasts will enjoy dozens of Edna Valley wineries and other spots around San Luis Obispo, most of which offer special events and entertainment. And while many say SLO County’s wine scene now rivals Napa Valley’s (without the traffic!), SLO has also led the way with its hip and fun craft beer scene .

Visiting an art museum in San Luis Obispo

San Luis Obispo is fortunate to have a robust arts community , featuring music, visual art, theater and more. Cal Poly’s state-of-the-art Christopher Cohan Performing Arts Center frequently hosts well-known national acts, speakers and critically acclaimed shows, while the San Luis Obispo Repertory Theatre puts a spotlight on outstanding local talent. The San Luis Obispo Museum of Art offers dozens of free exhibits year-round, and the historic Fremont Theatre is just one of several music venues featuring touring artists, not to mention throwback films.

If you want more than a 1-and-done event, San Luis Obispo is a popular place for cultural festivals, including the San Luis Obispo International Film Festival and Festival Mozaic summer and winter fests for classical music enthusiasts.

Visitors in Bubblegum Alley in Downtown San Luis Obispo

The classic cable-car-style trolley is a fun, retro way to get around – for just 50 cents a ride. But if you really want to take it all in, you might want to hoof it for a leisurely SLO Walkabout.

An easy walking tour , at your own pace, will allow you to spend more time with iconic and popular SLO sites, including Bubblegum Alley , Mission San Luis Obispo de Tolosa , museums and art galleries . Explore on your own, or listen to a free, 90-minute podcast tour courtesy of the History Center of San Luis Obispo County, which located just across the street from Mission Plaza.

People filling the streets at San Luis Obispo's Farmers' Market

Of course, you’ll want to spend plenty of time in San Luis Obispo, named the “Happiest City in North America.” But its central location in the county – it is the county seat, after all -- is yet another great feature.

Stay in SLO and you’re just a short drive from it all: ocean views in Avila Beach, Pismo Beach, and Morro Bay; North County wineries and the California Mid-State Fair are only a half hour away in Paso Robles; a quick detour to the Charles Paddock Zoo in Atascadero; and the famous Hearst Castle can be reached via the scenic Highway 1 in 45 minutes.

New Lynda and Stewart Resnick Student Success Center Supports First-Generation Students

A view of Cal Poly's campus with Bishop Peak in the background.

On Friday, Cal Poly announced the Lynda and Stewart Resnick Student Success Center, a transformational new facility aimed at expanding the career and personal development opportunities available to students.

Named after philanthropists and entrepreneurs Lynda and Stewart Resnick, co-founders of The Wonderful Company, the center honors their $20 million lead gift supporting the facility and their long-standing commitment for quality education.

The Resnicks’ philanthropy includes historic gifts to local institutions, including Caltech, UC Davis, and Fresno State, among others. They’ve focused transformational efforts in California’s Central Valley, where they support paradigm-changing work in education, community engagement, and health and wellness.

The 25,000 square-foot Lynda and Stewart Resnick Student Success Center will feature a professional development center for career services, programs that support Cal Poly’s growing numbers of first-generation students, and student diversity and belonging cultural centers.

“We have worked closely with Cal Poly for over 20 years through our Wonderful Scholars program and know it to be a tremendous educational environment that we are proud to continue to support,” said Lynda and Stewart Resnick. “This program will ensure first-generation students have access to the resources, collaboration and learning tools to help empower them to build successful lives and careers and make meaningful contributions to the world.”

The Lynda and Stewart Resnick Student Success Center will provide space for more student advisors, along with three times the office, counselor and professional recruiting space for Career Services , and Student Diversity and Belonging cultural centers.

“The new Lynda and Stewart Resnick Student Success Center will provide critical support for our first-generation students and an increased emphasis on career programming for all students,” said Cal Poly President Jeffrey D. Armstrong. “By engaging students early and often, the center will instill a culture of career readiness — helping to further elevate the value of a Cal Poly degree.”

The Resnicks are already stalwart supporters of student success at Cal Poly through their College Success Scholar Program. Created and funded by the Resnicks, this flagship program currently provides scholarships up to $30,000 for 82 Cal Poly students from the Central Valley and helps them prepare for, pay for, and persist through college.

“Student success happens when universities align professional purpose with personal identity,” said Keith Humphrey, Cal Poly’s vice president for student affairs. “That is exactly the conditions Cal Poly is creating within the Lynda and Stewart Resnick Student Success Center. I’m excited for our students to amplify their success when we open the doors to this transformational new facility in the core of campus.”

How a Cal Poly friend group's love of music inspired SLO's biggest music festival

M ar. 5—Ten years ago, a Cal Poly friend group's love of music led them to throw an end-of-the-year party on Cuesta Ridge featuring live bands. The friends called that party "The Last Shabang," and capped off the school year with a night of fun and live music.

Unbeknownst to them, that was hardly their last shabang.

Today, that party has turned into the Central Coast's biggest music festival known as Shabang Music and Arts Festival.

Now held over the course of two days, Shabang hosts some of music's biggest names and aims to "foster a community built on inclusion and creativity." This year it's scheduled to take over the Dairy Creek Golf Course in San Luis Obispo on May 3 and 4.

"We started this as a fluke and every little piece along the way has been some part serendipitous and some part the community's work stepping up to help put the Central Coast music community on the map," founding member and marketing director Greg Golf said in an interview with The Tribune.

On the leadership team, Golf is joined by co-founder Carson Stone, who acts as the director of partnerships and event operations; Alex Schwend, the festival's site director; and music director Sawyer Whalen.

Together, the team works each year to plan and coordinate the two-day festival — all while working their normal nine-to-five day jobs.

"This festival started as a passion project that has never stopped," Schwend said.

What goes into planning the SLO music festival?

Every member of the festival team focuses their attention on different aspects of the planning process.

Even though the festival has grown considerably over the last ten years, in many ways it still resembles its past and is largely DIY.

Schwend, who built the stages back when the festival was founded, continues to build the stages and many parts of the festival by hand — something Golf says is unique to Shabang.

Whalen works with a team to curate and select acts for the show's two-day lineup.

While working to bring in big names in music, Whalen also aims to promote local talent.

The festival hosts annual Battle of the Bands competitions to allow local artists and bands to compete to get on the festival's lineup. This year, the competitions are taking place in Santa Barbara, Santa Cruz, San Luis Obispo and San Diego.

"Our main focus is curating the lineup towards our demographic and our audience, while still kind of keeping in mind where Shabang comes from and those indie-rock roots," Whalen said.

Golf has taken on a variety of positions since the festival's founding, but now operates fully in a marketing and promotional strategic position, he said.

Stone, the director of partnerships and event operations, works to partner with nearly 40 different local businesses and boutique vendors to provide food and merchandise at the festival.

Stone also works with volunteers, security and medics to ensure the safety of festival goers at the event.

According to Stone, the Shabang team works to partner and hire largely students from Cal Poly.

"We hire a lot of college students and put them in roles they might not otherwise get without years of experience," he said.

What's changed? A look at Shabang through the years

Over the years, the festival has seen some drastic changes.

"Looking back and seeing what changed blew all of our minds," Golf said of the last Shabang in 2023. "We went from 20 people to 10,000 with multiple stages. But, we have seen a bunch of the same faces, which is really special."

A chief thing that has changed over the years is the festival's location.

After outgrowing their spot atop Cuesta Ridge, the friends made a connection in the city and moved the festival to Laguna Lake Park.

At that point, they were not charging an entrance fee and only asking for donations. All of the refreshments were sold by the founders themselves who walked around with coolers.

Eventually, the team was able to partner with local vendors so the founders could focus on other aspects of the massive event.

In 2022, the festival moved to its current location at Dairy Creek Golf Course in San Luis Obispo after the city recommended they find a bigger venue.

Shabang 2024: Headliners, camping and more

This year, for the first time, Shabang will allow festival goers to camp on the festival grounds overnight.

The lineup, which was announced on Jan. 23, includes indie rockers Peach Pit, Thundercat and Walker & Royce — some of the festival's biggest names yet. The festival will also play host to over 30 other bands and artists, including local talent selected from Battle of the Bands competitions.

Over 40 vendors will offer food and merchandise. Some of the partnerships include local San Luis Obispo County businesses like Boo Boo Records and Sequel Cold Brew Tea.

Festival goers can visit the different booths while walking between the different music stages.

"The event is independently run by the same three guys who started it in the beginning," Stone said. "We have just continued to build with the community. We are very community focused and have always tried to create the best experience for the fans so that they come back every year."

More information

Shabang Music and Arts Festival will take place on May 3 and 4.

Tickets are available at shabangslo.com/tickets . Local businesses interested in partnering with Shabang, can email [email protected] .
