How better to get your bearing in a city as enormous as NYC than by circumnavigation? The Circle Line’s two-and-a-half-hour tour does a full loop of Manhattan Island, taking passengers past plenty of the city’s most sights in the process. Spanning three rivers and all five boroughs, you’ll even pass within touching distance of Lady Liberty herself. In other words, get your camera ready!

You can stay on and complete the entire loop in 70 minutes, or hop on and off as you please, exploring the greats eats, shops and attractions in NYC's waterside neighborhoods.

AIANY Around Manhattan Architecture Tour

8.  AIANY Around Manhattan Architecture Tour

The area south of 59th Street is packed with architecturally significant buildings: There’s the Chrysler Building, the Woolworth Building, the Empire State Building, and One World Trade Center, just to name a few. This 90-minute boat tour led by a member of the New York chapter of the American Institute of Architects will cover all of Manhattan’s most significant structures, plus the Brooklyn Bridge, Ellis Island, and the Statue of Liberty. Sip complimentary beer, wine, or champagne from the bar while you learn about infrastructure, parks, and architecture.

Staten Island Ferry

9.  Staten Island Ferry

Put your purse away, because the Staten Island Ferry is totally free. That's right, in one of the most expensive cities in the world, you can find a free ride. This old chugger has been going since before any bridges were built, transporting folks from the 'burbs to Manhattan in 25 minutes. It still functions as a commuter necessity, but more and more sightseers are taking it to get the stunning panoramas of lower Manhattan and the Statue of Liberty. Boats leave South Ferry at Battery Park and run 24 hours a day.

Champagne Brunch Sail in New York City

10.  Champagne Brunch Sail in New York City

Fresh air, ocean waves, unlimited prosecco, and a massive brunch spread of bagels, lox, cream cheese, quiche, fresh fruit, and more – it’s fair to say that this midday cruise on the Shearwater really does have it all. Sit back and relax and the crew guides the restored 1929 sailboat out into the harbor. If you’re lucky, the captain will even let you take a turn at the helm.

Circle Line: Beast Speedboat Ride

11.  Circle Line: Beast Speedboat Ride

Adrenaline junkies will want to book tickets for this supercharged half-hour ride through New York Harbor. The 70-foot speedboat known as the  Beast  zooms toward the Statue of Liberty at 45 miles per hour, kicking up plenty of waves. In fact, the ride can get so intense that guides recommend wearing wetsuits.

Schooner America 2.0 »

Offering our most premium sailing experience in New York City, the Schooner America 2.0 is the newest, largest, and most elegant sailing vessel designed for our operation. Added to the fleet in 2010, America 2.0 offers the most exceptional day sailing one can find in New York Harbor. She is the fastest, most refined, and the most comfortable sailing vessel in our fleet and perfect to sail NYC!

The past meets the future aboard Classic Harbor Line’s Schooner America 2.0 . She is modeled after one of the most famous maritime icons of all time, the winner of the first “America’s Cup” of 1851, Schooner America . The “2.0” aspect of the vessel refers to the eco-friendly aspect of her cutting-edge construction by the designers at Scarano Boat Building, of Albany, New York . Rather than finding a diesel-consuming engine room below decks, you find a large battery bank providing electric propulsion. If you peeled away her hull, you find an extremely durable 3-layered composite of a light wood sandwiching an aluminum honeycomb instead a heavy, all wood vessel built from 100’s of trees. In place of a heavy wooden rig aloft, you find carbon-fiber masts, booms, and gaffs. Together, these strengthening and lightening components of construction help America 2.0 sail effortlessly and with less environmental impact.

From hoisting the sails, to serving beverages, to taking the time to answer your questions about the sights you are viewing, our crew aims for you to leave our boats feeling like you were always in great hands, and having made some new New York friends. We offer public trips for individuals, couples, families, and small groups, as well as private boat charters where you can customize the route, experience, and dining options for your guests.

The Yacht Manhattan & Manhattan II»

For power boat fans, the luxurious Yacht Manhattan & Manhattan II are the real gems amongst the New York Harbor boat tours . They are 1920s style, mahogany-trimmed “commuter” yachts that cruise with far fewer passengers than any other Manhattan sightseeing tour boat. Their ticketed harbor cruises average only about 20-100 guests per cruise. They have two regular routes on their ticketed cruises. One of the most unique is a 2.75 hour cruise that encircles the entire island of Manhattan, passing under 18 different bridges, and stopping briefly at the Statue of Liberty. The shorter 1.5 hour cruise is offered regularly during the afternoon, at sunset, and for stellar city lights cruises. This cruise on the Manhattan and Manhattan II captures all the key waterfront sites of the New York Harbor: the Statue of Liberty, Ellis Island, Battery Park, the Financial District Skyline, the Brooklyn Bridge, the East River and the United Nations Building, along with the numerous other landmarks of the Upper New York Harbor.

All of these cruises include a complimentary beverage from the teak and mahogany bar within the climate-controlled, sky-lit solarium. You can ride indoors or outdoors in absolute luxury and comfort year round. Aside from the yacht Manhattan’s regular ticketed schedule, you can also take advantage of many unique special event cruises. Each year there is a Mother’s Day Brunch Cruise, a Fourth of July Fireworks Cruise, a series of Fall Foliage boat rides up the Hudson River, a Wine Tasting Series, cruises offering specialty tours of New York Harbor, the only Around Manhattan Architecture Tour, and let us not forget a series of “Full Day Cruises” offering full day excursions to destinations on the Hudson River. Also, look for themed cruises to pop up throughout the year in the special events section of this home page.

Schooner Adirondack »

For the sailing enthusiast, a great way to take advantage of the New York Harbor sights is by sailing, aboard the elegant schooner: The Schooner Adirondack , our 80-foot wooden boat sails daily from Chelsea Piers May through November. She most commonly offers 2-hour day sails and sunset sails throughout the day with guaranteed passes by the Statue of Liberty. The Day Sails are perfect for families and guests interested in seeing the sites. These sails will always feature great views of the Lower Manhattan Skyline and Ellis Island, as well as complimentary beer, wine, Champagne and sodas. Wind and tide permitting, you may find yourself encircling Governor’s Island, or doing a short pass up the East River to get up close to the Brooklyn Bridge. Our Sunset Sail on the Adirondack is great for couples or co-workers looking to unwind after work. Another great NY Harbor sail for the romantic couple or a group of friends looking to have a fun night out on the water is the Schooner Adirondack’s City Lights Sail. This sail is truly magnificent and a local favorite. These sunset sails and city lights sails feature complimentary soda, water, beer, wine, and Champagne.

Rediscovering New York

As Daniel Leibowitz, a seasoned traveler and advocate for boat tours, remarks, the city assumes a different character when viewed from the water. This perspective brings into focus the architectural marvels and the sprawling bridges, each telling its own story against the backdrop of the Hudson or East River. It’s a fresh take on the cityscape, one that offers moments of awe and a deeper connection to the city’s essence. This unique viewpoint highlights the architectural achievements and historical depth of New York City, inviting onlookers to ponder the stories behind these towering structures.

The City’s Ever-Changing Vista

The dynamic views from a boat tour are ever-changing, with each turn offering a new tableau. From the serene beauty of the Battery Park waterfront to the bustling activity around the Brooklyn Bridge, the city reveals its diversity in full force. This continuous shift in scenery keeps the journey exciting and unpredictable, much like the city itself. The play of light on the water, the shifting shadows of the skyscrapers, and the ever-changing skyline as new buildings rise and old ones are renovated or replaced, all contribute to a living, breathing portrait of New York City. The boat tour not only showcases the city’s physical beauty but also its resilience and constant evolution. Observing the city from this unique perspective, one gains an appreciation for New York’s ability to reinvent itself while maintaining its iconic character and charm. The juxtaposition of old and new, nature and urbanity, tranquility and energy, encapsulates the essence of New York City, making the experience of viewing it from the water truly unparalleled.

Holiday-themed cruises become a popular attraction, offering warm beverages and stunning views of the city’s festive decorations. Boat tours during this season capture the essence of renewal, passing by gardens and parks that come alive with vibrant colors. It’s a time of rejuvenation, both for nature and for those exploring the city, making every boat tour feel like a celebration of new beginnings.

Summer’s Vibrant Energy

Sunset cruises are particularly spectacular, offering views of the skyline bathed in golden light. The summer months also bring a variety of special events and fireworks displays that can be enjoyed from the unique vantage point of a boat.

Tour boat operators charged in hudson river capsize that killed woman, 7-year-old boy.

Nina Golgowski

Breaking News Reporter, HuffPost

nyc city boat tours

Federal prosecutors have arrested two New Jersey tour boat operators in the 2022 drowning deaths of a 7-year-old boy and his aunt after their overcrowded vessel capsized while speeding in rough water off Manhattan, authorities said.

Richard Cruz, 32, and Jaime Pinilla Gomez, 25, were taken into custody Thursday and charged with one count each of misconduct and neglect of a ship resulting in death, the U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York announced .

On July 12, 2022, Cruz and Gomez’s 24-foot boat, the “Stimulus Money,” flipped over in the Hudson River while carrying 13 people. The operators allegedly did not have proper credentials or certifications.

While 11 people on the boat were able to escape, Lindelia Vasquez, 48, and 7-year-old Julian Vasquez became trapped beneath the vessel. Their bodies were recovered by a dive team approximately 25 minutes after the capsizing. Their cause of death was drowning, authorities said.

Eleven people were able to escape the capsizing of the Stimulus Money, but two passengers -- a 48-year-old woman and her 7-year-old nephew -- were found unconscious beneath the boat and pronounced dead at the scene, authorities said.

“This case demonstrates the deadly consequences of illegal passenger operations,” Rear Admiral John Mauger said in a statement reacting to the criminal charges. “Our thoughts are with the families of the victims today.”

Neither man was listed as having an attorney.

Cruz purchased the boat in cash off Facebook Marketplace about three months before the deadly accident, and started charging passengers $200 an hour for tours around the area, despite not having the required United States Coast Guard credentials and certifications to do so, authorities said.

Gomez, who was described in the complaint as an “insufficiently experienced mariner,” piloted the boat and allowed 13 people to board for the ill-fated trip, despite the boat’s 12-person limit and a small craft advisory being in effect at the time for New York Harbor, according to a copy of the criminal complaint.

The Stimulus Money is pulled out of the water after its July 12, 2022, capsizing.

“Inexperienced mariners, especially those operating smaller vessels,” were advised not to navigate the water due to the high winds and strong currents, the complaint states.

Once on the water, the boat allegedly traveled at high speeds in strong winds and heavy seas around lower Manhattan. It then entered some swells, causing its bow to take on water.

Gomez brought both throttles to a neutral position just as another swell hit the boat. The change in propulsion, coupled with the swell, caused the bow to become completely submerged up to its windshield. Gomez then accelerated the right-side throttle, exceeding the recommended rounds per minute for the vessel, just before it capsized on its left side, authorities said.

All 13 people on the boat were thrown overboard, according to authorities.

A victim of the boat accident is rushed away by paramedics.

Authorities concluded that Gomez was not properly wearing a safety device that would have turned off the boat’s engine if he’d abruptly moved away from the piloting position. Had Gomez been wearing the device as required, investigators said, “the vessel may not have overturned.”

“The lanyard was still intact and attached to the helm console at the time of the capsizing, indicating that the pilot was not wearing the Engine Kill Switch Lanyard or not wearing it properly,” the complaint states.

Both men, who were scheduled to make their first court appearance on Thursday, face a maximum sentence of 10 years in prison.

“Federal regulations and safety protocols exist to ensure that captains and operators of commercial vessels keep passengers safe,” said U.S. Attorney Damian Williams in a statement. “The defendants allegedly flouted those regulations, recklessly disregarded safety protocols, operated the vessel at an unsafe speed in hazardous conditions, and overloaded the vessel with too many passengers onboard. And the result was tragic — a young boy and a woman were trapped under the vessel and drowned after the vessel capsized.”

Boat owner and pilot charged in deadly New York boat accident that killed 2 passengers

T wo men were arrested Thursday and charged with causing the deaths of two people after the boat they were operating capsized in New York City’s Hudson River in July 2022, federal prosecutors said.

Richard Cruz, 32, and Jaime Pinilla Gomez, 25, were charged with one count each of misconduct and neglect of a ship officer resulting in death, according to the US attorney’s office  for the Southern District of New York. Cruz was the owner of the vehicle and Gomez was the pilot, according to the complaint.

At the time of the accident, all 13 people onboard were thrown overboard, according to a criminal complaint obtained by CNN. Rescue teams found the two victims, whom the New York Police Department identified as Julian Vasquez, 7, and Lindelia Vasquez, 48, trapped under the boat and unconscious after the capsizing, according to the US attorney’s office. Emergency workers pronounced them dead from a cause of drowning.

Cruz and Gomez conducted tours on the boat named “Stimulus Money” for paying customers in the months leading up to the capsizing, although they did not have the proper licenses to do so, according to a criminal complaint.

The complaint alleges that Cruz and Gomez broke several federal regulations in operating the boat, including having more passengers than the vessel’s maximum capacity, not possessing the certification needed for bringing paying customers on board and operating the boat without the required inspection.

The boat’s operating manual prohibits having more than 12 people on board, according to the complaint.

According to the compliant, there was a weather advisory in effect for New York Harbor at the time of the accident, the complaint said, and “inexperienced mariners, especially those operating smaller vessels, should avoid navigating in hazardous conditions.” Cruz and Gomez were also cited for driving the boat too quickly during these weather conditions.

“Federal regulations and protocols exist to ensure the captains and operators of commercial vehicles keep passengers safe,” US Attorney for the Southern District of New York Damian Williams said in a news release. “The defendants allegedly flouted those regulations, recklessly disregarded safety protocols, operated the vessel at an unsafe speed in hazardous conditions, and overloaded the vessel with too many passengers onboard.”

“And the result was tragic – a young boy and a woman trapped under the vessel and drowned after the vessel capsized,” he added.

The maximum potential sentence Cruz and Gomez face is 10 years, the news release said.

Gomez’s attorney, Thomas H. Nooter, declined to comment to CNN. Kristoff Williams, the attorney listed for Cruz, has not responded.

New York City Mayor Eric Adams called the incident a “devastating moment” at the time of the accident.

“Our hearts go out to a group of people who were just using the water in our cities,” Adams said. “This is a devastating moment for them and those who were part of the families that were there.”

CNN has reached out to the Vasquez family but has not heard back.

CNN’s Zenebou Sylla and Rob Frehse contributed to this report.
