New 'Star Trek' Exhibit Lets You Join Starfleet Academy

starfleet academy experience

NEW YORK — Have you ever wondered what it might be like to train at the same institute as the heroes of the "Star Trek" universe? Well, now you have the chance.

The  new interactive Starfleet Academy Experience at the Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum here in Manhattan lets visitors test their aptitude in seven different specializations featured at the fictional academy: communications, medicine, science, engineering, navigation, tactical and command. Cadets learn to speak a little Klingon, use a medical tricorder and can even be "beamed up" (of course, there's no actual teleportation involved). And "Star Trek" fan or not, who doesnꞌt want to take a spin in the captain's chair?

Last month, Space.com attended a press preview event for the exhibit (which officially opened Saturday, July 9), and while I was not well-versed in "Star Trek" before venturing to Starfleet Academy, I left wanting to binge-watch every TV episode and movie. [ See more photos from the Intrepid Museum's new "Star Trek" exhibit ]

Much like Starfleet Academy of the fictional "Star Trek" universe , the exhibit allows cadets to sample each career path before assigning them to one that best suits their skills. Special wristbands track each visitor's progress in a series of exercises and quizzes placed throughout the museum.

There are several props from the live-action "Star Trek" series scattered throughout the exhibit, including uniforms, tricorders, phasers and a model of the USS Enterprise (NCC-1701) — the first iteration of the central starship of the "Star Trek" franchise.

The Starfleet Academy Experience features a model of the USS Enterprise (NCC-1701), the first iteration of the central starship of the

At the medical station, cadets are asked to scan a Klingon patient using a medical tricorder , before making a diagnosis based on symptoms from the series registered by the device. Next, at the communications station, cadets take Klingon 101 and a "species selfie," where they can manipulate certain facial features, such as changing their ears or adding antennae, to resemble characters on the series.

At the science station, cadets encounter spaceship malfunctions and get to choose which nearby planet to crash-land on. Later, at the navigation station, cadets have to pilot their spacecraft's course  around planets, mine fields and asteroids to safely make it to the warp zone.

At the medical station, cadets are asked to examine a Klingon patient with a medical tricorder and diagnose the patient's illness accordingly.

Cadets of the Starfleet Academy Experience get to test their hand at one of the most iconic of "Star Trek" technologies: the phaser . Aiming a phaser at various moving targets on a screen is designed to test oneꞌs tactical skills, and based on my score, I am not well suited for the frontlines.

The last part of the exhibit features a re-creation of the Enterprise-D bridge, complete with a captain's chair. Here, a cadet's command skills are put to the test with the famous (to Trek fans, at least) unbeatable Kobayashi Maru exam. This simulated exercise tests how a cadet would handle no-win situations, such as helping a distressed civilian vessel in the Klingon Neutral Zone, inevitably violating a treaty between the Klingons and Starfleet and risking an all-out war, or just leaving the vessel to an uncertain fate. Since I was able to save only 65 crewmembers from the hypothetical vessel in distress, I would not want to sit in the captain's chair during a rescue mission.

While not all the exercise stations and interactive activities were fully operable when I attended the event, my performance during training showed that I was best fit to study communications at Starfleet Academy – unsurprisingly.

Space.com's Samantha Mathewson was invited to be a cadet in the communications field of Starfleet Academy.

From fiction to science

Throughout the exhibit, visitors are immersed in "Star Trek" history and information about how the TV show has shaped present-day culture and technology . The universal translator, for example, is a futuristic communication tool inspired by old flip phones.

Space.com spoke to former NASA astronaut Mike Massimino about how "Star Trek" has influenced the space program today.

"To me, that's what science fiction did — it turned into science fact. This show came out in the '60s and the space program was much different back then," Massimino told Space.com. "Now, 50 years later, the space program has become more like what you see in 'Star Trek' — different genders, multinational, and a lot of the technology that was predicted in the show is now available to us."

Space.com's Calla Cofield and Samantha Mathewson test their tactical skills by firing a phaser at various moving targets on a screen.

George Takei, who played Hikaru Sulu, a lieutenant commander in the original "Star Trek" TV series, was also present at the press event. As a Starfleet alumnus, Takei said he hopes that the Starfleet Academy Experience at the Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum continues to educate and inspire the next generation of space explorers.

"We are today — in the year 2016 — living in a science fiction world," Takei told Space.com. "We are animals of imagination, innovation and invention — we create our future. We imagine the unimagined way out there in space and that becomes an inspiration to today's scientists, researchers and inventors."

With "Star Trek" celebrating its 50th anniversary this September , we think a visit to the Starfleet Academy Experience would be a perfect way to commemorate the iconic franchise.

Review: The ‘Star Trek: Prodigy’ Experience At CAMP Brooklyn Is Fun For The Whole Family

| July 22, 2022 | By: Michael A. Nguyen 3 comments so far

Today fans in the New York area have a fun new option for an activity with the kids with the opening of the  Star Trek: Prodigy Experience at CAMP Brooklyn, dubbed an “out-of-this-world adventure for the whole family.” We had a chance to check out a preview earlier this week to see what it is like.

Experience Prodigy in NYC

CAMP, which describes itself as a “family experience company, has stores around the USA, each with its own theme, and the one in Brooklyn, New York has a focus on space. And CAMP has partnered with Nickelodeon and Paramount+ to deliver an immersive experience set in the Star Trek: Prodigy universe to Brooklyn. This family-friendly experience is focused on youth but can be enjoyed by Star Trek fans of all ages.

Hologram Janeway welcomes you into the Star Trek: Prodigy Experience at CAMP Brooklyn

You can visit the Star Trek: Prodigy Experience with a group of friends and form a team. After selecting a team name you’ll enter a mock-up of a spacecraft, follow procedures to go to “warp speed,” and arrive in the world of Trek where you will have the chance to test your skills and save the galaxy. Each attendee is given a bracelet “tricorder” that tracks their progress throughout the event.

One of the first challenges involves safely navigating a “lava” obstacle on planet, Nibiru. You’ll have to safely step across projections of lava and collect virtual coins along the way. Next you’ll arrive in a desert environment where you’ll practice retrieving virtual coins using a remote control robot and assembling magnetic bricks. A shuttlecraft-like playground features buttons, switches, and visual displays that kids will enjoy. And if an “emergency” occurs, you can get to safety via sliding boards labeled “escape pod.”

After the desert, you’ll get to “cool down” in a small ice cave on Andoria. There, multicolored light-up stations will give visitors a chance to match a series of shapes to win. Then you’ll get to try to save Earth from asteroids through an interactive computer game.

Towards the end of the exhibit, you’ll take part in a Starfleet Review where you’ll have the chance to answer trivia questions, win stickers, and prove yourself as a Starfleet trainee. Finally, in the craft area you will have the chance to make your own slime in a craft area in honor of Murf, the gelatinous alien aboard the USS Protostar.

Once you’ve finished the tour you’ll turn in your tricorder (although you get to keep the super cool Starfleet branded bracelet), check your team’s points, and finish your Starfleet service for the day.

High scores at Star Trek: Prodigy Experience at CAMP Brooklyn

It takes about a half hour to go through the exhibit but die-hard Trekkies may enjoy the environments so much they may stay longer. The staff is extremely helpful, kind, and enthusiastic and it helps make the experience even better. The Star Trek: Prodigy Experience is recommended for kids of all ages.

Star Trek At NYCC 2023

Jack Trestrail

It’s time for Star Trek At NYCC 2023! In a world where pop culture events are the pulse of the entertainment industry, ReedPop’s New York Comic Con (NYCC) holds a special place. Scheduled to take place from 12th to 15th October at NYC’s Javits Centre, we’re excitedly anticipating Paramount’s Star Trek Universe presentation.

Paramount+ has revealed an exciting schedule for the NYCC, including the Star Trek Universe Presentation . Planned for Saturday, 14 October, from 1:45 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. ET on the Empire Stage, the official description is tantalising:

What To Expect From Star Trek At NYCC 2023

The event’s details are shrouded in mystery. In July, the writers and actors’ strikes impacted the Star Trek Universe panel at San Diego Comic-Con . Consequently, Paramount+ decided to debut the Strange New Worlds/Lower Decks crossover episode. With the Writers Strike now essentially concluded, we could hear some surprise reveals about future Star Trek projects. It’s important to note that the Screen Actors Guild (SAG) Strike is still ongoing as of writing.

Based on the NYCC panel’s date, we’re speculating that they’ll probably screen episode 8 of Star Trek: Lower Decks , set to stream the following Thursday. However, unlike at San Diego Comic-Con, even in the absence of celebrities, Paramount is stirring the pot with mentions of “exciting reveals and surprises.”

One possibility is a new trailer for Star Trek: Discovery’s fifth and final season, perhaps even revealing a specific release date other than “early 2024.” Then again, without the actors to hype up the show’s last outing, who knows what they will do?

Paramount+ is returning to the NYCC convention floor with an interactive booth space, Booth #1723, promising exclusive photo opportunities and more. A convention-exclusive Funk Pop for NYCC 2023 will be available. This is Geordi La Forge from Star Trek: The Next Generation . Note this is the Season One appearance of La Forge, as identified by the red uniform.

Star Trek Takes Over New York

star trek experience nyc

Star Trek: Mission New York kicked off on Friday, with events spanning from informative panels to celebrity sessions on stage, from game-playing to checking out a replica of the TOS Enterprise bridge, from a USPS Star Trek stamp First Day of Issue ceremony, and from a preview of COPD: Highly Illogical: Remembering Leonard Nimoy to a screening of Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan -- Director's Cut 4K, with director Nicholas Meyer on hand for a Q&A. There's also a bustling exhibitors' area featuring products for sale, exhibits to explore and games to play.

Fans, for the entire day, could picked and choose between activities in four different rooms, one of which housed the main stage. Some highlights from Friday's activities include:

star trek experience nyc

Star Trek writers and editors, including Marco Palmieri, Kirsten Beyer, David Alan Mack, Margaret Clark, Edward Schlesinger and Michael Jan Friedman, gathered for the panel The History and Future of Star Trek Novels. The panel's title really says it all, as the looked back at Trek past and previewed things to come, as well as discussed how/why they got into Star Trek .

star trek experience nyc

"The hardest thing in the world to do is tie-in novels," Clark said. "The authors that are up here know Star Trek and how to write."

star trek experience nyc

"Part of our job is to know all the hidden details," Mack said. "You have to get someone who's an expert in canon. We cite our sources and our references in our outlines."

star trek experience nyc

Beyer said of Mack's acclaimed book Destiny, "It made me realize, 'Oh, we can do this.' It's never really been the same since."

Mack replied, noting the challenge on Destiny was "Finding a story that was suitably epic and suitable Star Trek. It helped that I had two editors. I give a lot of credit to my editors that pushed me."

The development team behind Ubisoft's new virtual reality game Star Trek: Bridge Crew , including David Votypka and Brian Tate, joined John Van Citters of CBS Consumer Products for a panel explored the game's cool breakthroughs. And it started with a short video featuring Jeri Ryan, Karl Urban and LeVar Burton, joined by Votypka, giving a demo of the game -- which can be played by four people at a time and is set in the Kelvin timeline -- a whirl.

star trek experience nyc

"The actors would say that on the shows and in the movies they'd be in front of green screens and pretend to press buttons and make things happen," Votypka said. "With the game, they'd press a button and things did happen right  in front of their eyes."

"Bridge Crew is a social VR game, where you're working together as a crew," Votypka explained. "And you have to work together to succeed."

star trek experience nyc

Van Citters pointed out that so many games in the past involved shooting stuff, which never quite dovetailed with the Trek ethos of exploring. But the main reticence to a VR Trek game boiled down to, "Is the technology really ready to bring that to reality? And this is perfect. I'm so excited about it."

Next up was Bringing the Star Trek Universe to Xbox One and PlayStation 4 -- Meet the Team Behind Star Trek Online . The session featured exec producer Steve Ricossa, lead designer Al Rivera, producer Maria Rosseau and, surprising the audience, actress Denise Crosby!

star trek experience nyc

"Your ship, your customization, your name and registry," Ricossa revealed, referring to game updates. "Your ship will be sent to you."

star trek experience nyc

Asked about reprising her roles as Yar and Sela, Crosby said, "You (STO) have given me a chance to go deeper in the role of Sela. When she was introduced in TNG there was so much more potential. A big arc was that she would have to come to terms with her human half and she would begin to understand who her mother was... They kind of dropped the ball, and I sort of came in and came out. It was such a surprise when Tasha was alive and I was able to do this story for STO. It was very emotional to return to this character. It took me completely by surprise and I thank you."

star trek experience nyc

Julie Nimoy, the daughter of Leonard Nimoy, took to the main stage to preview COPD: Highly Illogical: Remembering Leonard Nimoy, the upcoming documentary she's made with her husband, David Knight. Fans watched the new trailer for the film and listened intently as Nimoy talked about COPD, short for Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease, which is an umbrella term for a number of lung diseases, and also shared memories of her father. The film will open in November.

star trek experience nyc

"The documentary is about my father's struggle and battle with the disease," she said. "We're continuing his mission to bring awareness of the disease to people all over the world."

star trek experience nyc

"Doing this film keeps my dad close to me," she said. "I see him and hear his voice every day working on it. I'm happy about that."

One panel that most fans had never, ever seen the likes of before was The First Convention and How It Helped Resurrect Star Trek. That first convention, planned by avid fans and done on a shoestring budget, took place in 1972 in Manhattan and set the stage for all the sci-fi and Trek cons that followed, including Mission New York. Eight hundred fans were expected... 3,000 showed up. Committee members/organizers on the Mission New York dais included Stuart Hellinger, Elyse Rosenstein, Joyce Yasner, Devra Langsam and Linda Deneroff. They were full of anecdotes about the landmark con and the ones they put on through 1976, and also took time to pay tribute to the late Joan Winston, their friend and co-organizer.

star trek experience nyc

"Science fiction fandom changed because of Star Trek," Hellinger said.

star trek experience nyc

"It was Roddenberry; he said yes and he was for it," Rosenstein said. "It was good for him, good for Star Trek and good for us. One time, Gene Roddenberry was at a con looking for the hospitality suite," Rosenstein said. "There was food and booze in there. He was wandering around. A young, male "helper" stopped Roddenberry.  He wouldn't let Roddenberry in because he didn't have a badge. Roddenberry said, 'I am Star Trek.' And that's how he got in."

"There was a lot of press," Ellinger recalled. "The one network that didn't want to cover it was... NBC, the network that aired TOS.

star trek experience nyc

"We never understood the total scope of the interest people would in the conventions," Langsam acknowledged. "We underestimated it."

star trek experience nyc

A short time later, fans settled in for a panel titled Star Trek Costuming, Prop Creation & Special Effect Makeup, which examined the principles of costuming and prop making, and how to create special effect makeup using latex and other materials.

Lawrence Neals Jr. explained, "I'm relatively new to costuming. If you're starting from scratch, with not a lot of money, find something that already exists and modify it. Find something, tear it apart, and put it back together again. Cannibalize it. Cannibalization is an awesome tool!"

star trek experience nyc

"It comes down to where to buy, what to buy, who to buy from, who not to buy from," Michael Nguyen said. "Always think of the three 'C's': How close to screen accurate go you want it? How comfortable do you want to be? How costly can it be?"

And, offered Foxy Squire, "Just as you need to practice what you sew, you also need to practice your makeup. Don't rush. Put the extra time it takes to be better. This is your vacation; don't over-stress. The party starts when you get to the party/con."

star trek experience nyc

Outside it was early evening, but inside the Javits Center, Mission New York was still going strong with StarTalk All-Stars Present: The Science of Star Trek , a panel that featured Dr. Charles Liu (NYU), Chuck Nice (co-host), Summer Ash (Columbia University - Astro physicist) and Andrew F (astronomy book). The conversation focused mainly on space and astronomy, and Star Trek's influence on them.

star trek experience nyc

"The furthest that we've sent something is the Voyager probe," Ash noted, "which is about 23 light years away." Added Summer... "All of Star Trek is within the Milky Way."

star trek experience nyc

Andrew Fazekas commented on the possibility of discovering a planet that could support life. "Scientists are looking for an inhabitable zone or what is the Goldilocks Zone. Not too hot, not too cold."

star trek experience nyc

And out on the floor, fans flocked to the exhibitors' area. They bought books and art and games and apparel. Many visited the Ubisoft booth and signed up to try out the VR game Bridge Crew. You could hear players oohing and aahing as they experienced the adventure.

star trek experience nyc

Also, fans enjoyed stepping into the Original Series Set Tour elements that made the trek from Ticonderoga, New York, to the Big Apple. There was the Enterprise bridge, as well as long glass cases filled with actual and replica props. Personally, we loved the Balok head.

The final panel of the day, IDW and the Wonderful World of Trek Comics, featured IDW editor-in-chief Chris Ryall, group editor Sarah Gaydos, writer Mike Johnson and a rare appearance by writer/photo manipulator John Byrne.

star trek experience nyc

Discussing the evolution of his popular New Visions photo comics tales, Byrne said, "I realized there was enough Star Trek material out there on VHS that you could put together at least a half hour episode.” That turned into over 15 40-page issues based on the TOS photo-novels from the 70s. “I take existing shots from The Original Series and make a new story. It’s new stories.”

star trek experience nyc

Mike Johnson was Mr. Prolific, having written the ongoing Kelvin timeline comic that ran 60 issues. "Thank you," he said, "for giving us the opportunity to tell these stories."

Now, with that series concluding, it's time to go beyond, so to speak. As Gaydos put it, "We’re refreshing the line with Boldly Go #1, with the same team. This is definitely not negating anything that happened before.”

Other new titles include Waypoint, an anthology that celebrates every iteration of Trek, except for the Kelvin timeline. Also on the way: a Star Trek/Green Lantern crossover sequel. It'll be out in December.

Be sure to visit StarTrek.com again tomorrow for recaps of Day Two at Mission New York .
