12 Best Things To Do in Abu Dhabi

Updated February 11, 2021

Abu Dhabi boasts a fair number of expansive shopping centers (such as the Marina Mall ) and luxury attractions (like Ferrari World ). But the UAE's largest emirate is also an excellent place to learn more about the nation's traditions. Spend your days

  • All Things To Do

places to visit in abu dhabi 2022

Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque free

Constructed between 1996 and 2007 at the request of Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, the founder and first president of the United Arab Emirates, Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque is by far the most popular of Abu Dhabi's sights, and it's easy to see why. One of the largest mosques in the world, this house of worship features 82 domes, more than 1,000 columns and a white and gold facade. What's more, this is one of only two mosques in the UAE open to non-Muslim tourists. That means that visitors from all around the globe can walk across the world's largest hand-woven rug, gaze up at one of the world's largest chandeliers and admire the fusion of Fatimid, Mamluk and Ottoman architectural styles, representing three different Islamic dynasties.

Although it's not Abu Dhabi's oldest attraction, those who have visited the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque say that a stop here is a must for those who want a better understanding of the city's religious identity. The site is one of the world's most significant examples of contemporary Islamic architecture. You are welcome to explore the mosque on your own, but many travelers recommend tagging along on one of the free guided tours; tours take between 45 minutes and an hour and can be reserved in advance, or you can simply show up and wait for the next scheduled English tour. "Our guide was outstanding; no religion, just amazing facts and with his commentary we understood the incredible engineering, art [and] workmanship that make this so very special," according to one TripAdvisor user. Previous visitors highly recommend touring the mosque in the evening when the sunset reflects off the marble courtyard.

The Corniche The Corniche free

Stretching nearly 5 miles along the coast of Dhow Harbour — from the Heritage Park to the northeast to Emirates Palace in the southwest — the Corniche makes up the horizontal part of Abu Dhabi city's "T" shape. This seaside promenade is lined with some of the city's most popular hotels, not to mention a variety of restaurants and shops. According to recent visitors, The Corniche offers extensive views of the Persian Gulf and the city skyline. "If you can, rent a bicycle," one TripAdvisor user advised. "It's […] a bit too long for a walk, but just right for a bicycle ride." You'll find several rental shops where you can pick up a set of wheels: FunRideSports has five stations along the Corniche where you can pick up a bike starting at 30 AED (around $8 USD) per hour.

But for most travelers, the main reason to visit the Corniche is to take advantage of its access to the city's beaches. Boasting volleyball nets, free concerts, ice cream shops and calm waters, Corniche Beach (located on the southwestern section of the promenade with the main entrance near the Hilton hotel) offers a family-friendly atmosphere, though you'll need to pay 10 AED (about $3 USD) to access the sands. Meanwhile, the city recently opened a public beach closer to the northern end of the Corniche: Known as the Western Extension, this mile of shoreline is free to access and features both swimming and water sports areas.

Emirates Palace Emirates Palace free

Like the Burj Al Arab in Dubai , Emirates Palace sets the standard for luxury lodging in Abu Dhabi. This sprawling resort says its goes "beyond 5-star luxury" for its clientele — who are oftentimes visiting royals and dignitaries. But you don't have to be a guest to experience what all the fuss is about. This resort — which occupies nearly 250 acres of coastline along the Corniche and stretches more than half a mile from wing to wing — has become one of Abu Dhabi city's most recognizable landmarks. Emirates Palace looks almost like a cross between the Taj Mahal and a fairy tale castle: The structure features more than 100 domes, the insides of which are decorated with gold, crystals and mother of pearl. More than 1,000 chandeliers and rich handmade carpets add to the interior's opulence, while outside the hotel, palm trees, lush gardens and bubbling fountains create an oasis effect.

Non-guests are welcome to enjoy a traditional hammam (Turkish bath) experience or a skin treatment at the Anantara Spa or grab a bite to eat at one of the hotel's nine restaurants. But most visitors were content simply wandering the grounds. One TripAdvisor user described Emirates Palace as "beautiful inside and out," adding, "I would recommend dressing nicely, to not feel out of place. It gives you a view of how 'the other half' lives." Some recent visitors recommend stopping in for afternoon tea, while others say that an evening visit is the way to go so that you can see the hotel all lit up.

Abu Dhabi Desert Tours Abu Dhabi Desert Tours

Surrounding the Liwa Oasis in the western part of the emirate is the Al Gharbia region, home to the Rub Al Khali (Empty Quarter). As the largest uninterrupted sand mass in the world, the Empty Quarter provides the perfect backdrop for a variety of desert excursions. Whether you'd prefer a more traditional camel trek or a wild dune buggy ride (often known as "dune-bashing"), a safari-style jeep ride or a birds-eye balloon tour, you'll find plenty of ways to explore the Arabian desert. A number of companies offer organized tours of the Empty Quarter; some of the more reputable options are Arabian Adventures , Emirates Tours , Abu Dhabi Adventure Tours and Abu Dhabi Desert Safari . Tours can be booked through the companies' websites, and the earlier you try to make reservations, the more likely it is that there will be availability.

Many recent Abu Dhabi visitors say that their desert tour was one of the highlights of their trip. According to one TripAdvisor user (who booked through Abu Dhabi Desert Safari), "[The] Dune-bashing part was the most exhilarating thing I've ever done on vacation. […] Just don't eat a few hours before. It's intense." Tour prices will depend on the company and the type of tour you choose. Jebel Hafeet & The Al Ain Camel Souk Jebel Hafeet & The Al Ain Camel Souk free

Rising more than 4,000 feet out of the desert and straddling the UAE-Oman border about 15 miles south of Al Ain, Jebel Hafeet stands as the tallest mountain in the emirate and the second-tallest mountain in the country. This mountain has played a significant role in Emirati history: Not only have several notable fossil discoveries been made here, but archaeologists have also unearthed more than 500 ancient burial sites in the Jebel Hafeet foothills. Yet most travelers don't plan a trip to this mountain because they're interested in history; rather, Jebel Hafeet offers what many road trip enthusiasts (including Edmunds.com and The Weather Channel) have deemed one of the best driving roads in the world. The road weaves its way through the mountain's limestone up to the summit, where you'll find the Mercure Grand Jebel Hafeet hotel, as well as beautiful views of Al Ain and neighboring Oman. Many recent travelers recommend making the drive late in the afternoon to enjoy the sunset from the mountaintop.

If you have some extra time after your drive, consider making a stop at the Al Ain Camel Souk, located southeast of Jebel Hafeet (less than a 20 mile drive from the summit) near the Oman border in Meyzad. The last traditional camel market in the UAE, this lively market will allow you to get up close and personal with the iconic "ships of the desert" and experience the camel trade as it has operated for centuries. Those who have visited say that they enjoyed their visit, though a few travelers note that the locals have been known to ask for money in return for photos of the camels. Also, be mindful of how you dress for your visit. "The camel souq is an all male and quite conservative place. Modest clothing for both men and women is a must," one TripAdvisor user advised, adding "I would also recommend easy-to-clean footwear."

Al Jahili Fort Al Jahili Fort free

Sitting about a block west of the Palace Museum is the striking Al Jahili Fort. Built in the late 1800s, Al Jahili is the largest edifice in Al Ain made from mud bricks (a traditional form of Arabian architecture), and it has recently been refurbished for public visitation. The structure was erected as the headquarters of the Oman Trucial Scouts, a group tasked with the protection of the region's palm groves and the preservation of peace between the different tribes that once occupied the area. Today, visitors are welcome to explore the fort's battlements and watchtowers, which surround an expansive courtyard that often acts as a backdrop for outdoor concerts. Al Jahili also houses a small exhibit dedicated to British explorer Sir Wilfred Thesiger (fondly known in the UAE as "Mubarak Bin London), who is known for his journeys across the Rub Al Khali (Empty Quarter) desert .

Travelers who have spent time at Al Jahili say that the fort provides an interesting peek at the area's history while offering plenty of photo opportunities. Recent visitors are especially impressed with the Thesiger exhibit. According to one TripAdvisor user, "The exhibition of Wilfred Thesiger's photos as he lived amongst the Bedouin prior to oil discovery show a great insight into the history of this country."

Marina Mall Marina Mall free

The United Arab Emirates are a shopper's paradise: This wealthy country has no shortage of traditional souks (marketplaces) and high-end megamalls, with the Marina Mall being one of Abu Dhabi's most popular shopping venues. Located near Heritage Village on the Breakwater in the southwest corner of Abu Dhabi city, this immense shopping complex houses more than 400 stores, as well as a bowling alley, a movie theater, an ice rink and an amusement center complete with arcade games and rides. You'll also find a variety of restaurants and cafes in addition to a sprawling food court.

Recent travelers love the variety of shops and eateries found here, but several visitors say that the Marina Mall's observation deck was the highlight of their visit. Because of its location, the mall offers panoramas of the Persian Gulf, the Corniche and Emirates Palace . "I would recommend going around sunset to see a pretty spectacular view," one TripAdvisor user advised.

Al Ain Oasis Al Ain Oasis free

When the blazing Arabian heat starts to take its toll, you can find respite at the Al Ain Oasis. Occupying nearly 3,000 acres of central Al Ain, this quiet park is best known for its date palms — nearly 150,000 of them. These towering trees are part of plantations (some of them privately owned) that still help supply Abu Dhabi with the popular regional snack. Meanwhile, you'll have a chance to witness the ancient irrigation tactic known as " falaj ," which is still used to water the mango, orange, banana and fig trees. While you walk around, keep your eyes open for the remains of an old mosque and fortification, and keep your camera primed to capture the stark contrast between the verdant oasis and the dry desert.

Recent visitors describe the oasis as a nice place to explore, though some travelers note that finding your way around can be a challenge. "The guard said there is a spring worth seeing but [I] almost got lost inside and could not find anyone to ask for directions," one TripAdvisor user recalled.

Sheikh Zayed Palace Museum Sheikh Zayed Palace Museum free

Sitting on the western edge of the Al Ain Oasis , the Sheikh Zayed Palace Museum (also known as the Al Ain Palace Museum) offers visitors a glimpse of what life was like for the UAE's founder and first president. Built in 1910, this large complex housed Sheikh Zayed Bin Sultan Al Nahyan and his family while he was in power. Visitors to the museum can learn more about the "Father of the Nation" as they wander through the palace's courtyards, gardens and sleeping quarters. You'll also have to opportunity to peek into the meeting rooms where Sheikh Zayed met with visiting dignitaries and other guests.

Those who have visited the Sheikh Zayed Palace Museum say that a self-guided tour takes roughly an hour and that it's worth seeing if you make it to Al Ain. Travelers describe the palace as a beautiful, but one TripAdvisor user felt that the museum was lacking when it came to information: "There is a map, but no booklets for foreign visitors, which I think would be of benefit."

Heritage Village Heritage Village free

Although Abu Dhabi is constantly evolving, remnants of the UAE's heritage are easy to find. If you're interested in learning more about Abu Dhabi's roots, consider a visit to Heritage Village. Set across the Dhow Harbour from the Corniche , Heritage Village is a representation of the original fishing village that once stood here. While touring this living museum, you'll stroll past Bedouin tents and wooden huts housing workshops where you can watch weaving and metal-working demonstrations. The facility also features a restaurant and several shops where you can pick up local crafts and spices.

Travelers agree that Heritage Village offers an interesting peek at Abu Dhabi's history and appreciate that the attraction doesn't charge admission. "You can […] get an idea of how life used to be in the Emirates," one TripAdvisor user said, adding that the visit offered "interesting insight to what life used to be like before the skyscrapers and Bentleys." However, many recent visitors lament the site's small size, noting that a visit won't require more than an hour or two.

Yas Marina Circuit & Ferrari World Yas Marina Circuit & Ferrari World

Fans of racing will feel at home in Abu Dhabi. While those more interested in Abu Dhabi's heritage make their way to the camel race tracks near Al Ain, travelers with a need for speed need only look to the Yas Marina Circuit for their fill of fast cars. One of the world's most technologically innovative racing venues, the Yas Marina Circuit hosts Grand Prix and Formula 1 races, but when the professionals aren't burning rubber, visitors are welcome to test out the track. Here, you have your choice of racing a variety of vehicles, including go-karts, Mercedes-Benz vehicles and even Aston Martins.

If you're not all that interested in getting behind the wheel, you can explore the facility on a tour. Guides will take you all around the track from the pit garages to the media center to the grandstand. "This was a great behind the scenes tour," one TripAdvisor user said. "Our guide […] was really friendly and informative and it was great to see such an amazing track at close quarters." And if you happen to be in town on a race day, recent visitors highly recommend snagging seats. For the best rates, consider purchasing tickets online in advance on the Yas Marina Circuit website .

Abu Dhabi Falcon Hospital Abu Dhabi Falcon Hospital

One of Abu Dhabi's more obscure attractions is the Abu Dhabi Falcon Hospital: This functioning animal care unit is devoted to the health of falcons, which have long played an important role in Emirati society. Falconry has been practiced in the UAE for thousands of years: Bedouins used falcons to help them hunt and scavenge for food. Today, falconry is more of a sport than a necessity as hunting is now restricted in Abu Dhabi. But the birds are still revered — domesticated falcons are even granted their own UAE passports. Having opened in 1999, the ADFH cares for more than 8,500 falcons each year.

If you're interested in learning more about falconry, the hospital offers two-hour guided tours of its facility. The tour stops at several points of interest, including the falconry museum, the hospital's exam rooms and the aviary, where the birds are free to fly around at their leisure. "Not only is the tour informational, it was exciting," one TripAdvisor user recalled. "We got to watch a minor surgery, grooming, and much more." Another highlight of the tour is the opportunity to balance a falcon on your arm — souvenir photos are included in the cost of the tour.

The Best 15 Things to do in Abu Dhabi

1. visit the biggest mosque in the uae: sheik zayed grand mosque.

One of the best things to do in Abu Dhabi is to visit the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque. This mosque is truly a work of art, and it is one of the largest in the world.

It can accommodate over 40,000 worshippers at any given time, and it features 82 domes, over 1000 columns, 24-karat gold chandeliers, and the world’s largest hand-woven carpet. If you want to learn more about Islamic culture, this is the perfect place to start.

The mosque is open to the public from Saturday to Thursday, and it is located in Abu Dhabi city centre. Admission is free, but you will need to dress modestly. This means covering your shoulders and knees, and wearing a headscarf if you are a woman.

If you’re big on travel photography, I would recommend going early. The first admission is at 9 am, and I promise you, it will be worth it. The mosque is absolutely breathtaking, especially when the sun hits it just right.

2. Rent a bike and cycle along the Corniche Promenade

One of the best ways to see Abu Dhabi is by bike. You can rent a bike from any of the many rental shops along Corniche road, and then you can explore at your own pace. There are plenty of things to see along the way, including parks, beaches, and restaurants.

This is a great activity for solo and group travellers alike who are looking for cheap things to do in Abu Dhabi. Bike rental prices start at around 20 AED per hour. You need a valid ID to get the bicycles, or you have to deposit 100 AED. If you want to avoid the heat, I recommend going early in the morning or later in the evening.

The best time to explore Corniche is during sunset when the temperatures are cooler, and the views are absolutely stunning. The Corniche is a symbol of Abu Dhabi and is one of the best places to visit in the UAE.

3. Visit the Louvre, the Abu Dhabi Louvre that is

The Louvre in Abu Dhabi is one of the best museums in the world. It is located on Saadiyat Island, and it features over 600 pieces of art from various cultures and time periods. The museum itself is a work of art, and it was designed by French architect Jean Nouvel.

If you love art, history, or culture, this is a must-see attraction and is one of the top things to do in Abu Dhabi. The museum is open from Saturday to Wednesday, and it is located on Saadiyat Island. Admission is 30 AED for adults.

It might seem nothing can compare to the Louvre in Paris, but I promise you it is well worth a visit, or it wouldn’t be one of the best things to do in Abu Dhabi.

4. Take in 360 views of Abu Dhabi at the Observation Deck at 300

For the best views of Abu Dhabi, you need to go to the Observation Deck at 300. It’s located on the 74th floor of Jumeirah at Etihad Towers, and it offers stunning 360-degree views of the city. The best time to visit the Observation Deck is during sunset when you can watch the city light up. Admission is 80 AED for adults, and it includes a complimentary drink.

The Observation Deck is open from 12pm – 12am. If you’re looking for things to do in Abu Dhabi that are unique and memorable, this is definitely one of the top things to do in Abu Dhabi.

5. Go on Safari! Have a day trip to Sir Bani Yas

Sir Bani Yas is an island off the coast of Abu Dhabi, and it’s home to a nature reserve. Many animals live on the island, including giraffes, oryxes, gazelles, and ostriches.

Many of those who visit Abu Dhabi rave about this trip in particular, so it’s definitely one of the top things to do in Abu Dhabi, as well as one of the best places to visit in the UAE.

Given the UAE is mostly desert, it’s definitely special if you can visit somewhere with some wildlife! You can book a day trip from Abu Dhabi that includes a safari tour of the island. Tickets cost around 500 AED per person.

The Best Things to do in Abu Dhabi

6. Have a beach day at Saadiyat Island

If you’re looking for cheap things to do in Abu Dhabi that are fun and relaxing, I would recommend having a beach day at Saadiyat Island. It’s a beautiful island, and it’s home to some of the best beaches in Abu Dhabi.

There are plenty of restaurants and cafes on the island so you can make a day of it. For those who don’t fancy sitting on a lounger all day, there are plenty of activities to keep you busy. You can go for a swim, paddleboard, or even take a jet ski out.

To get to Saadiyat Island, you can take a bus from Abu Dhabi city centre. The journey takes around 30 minutes, and the buses run every 20 minutes. Tickets cost around 12 AED.

8. Go on an evening desert safari tour

One of the best things to do in Abu Dhabi is to go on a desert safari tour! You’ll get to experience the best of the UAE desert, and you’ll get to see some incredible sights.

Most desert safari tours include a pick-up and drop-off service, so you don’t have to worry about renting a car. You can book directly with tour companies, or you can book through your hotel. I booked with Emirates tours and would highly recommend them!

The tour experience includes a dune bash, sunset camel ride, sandboarding, and a BBQ dinner. The best time to go on a desert safari tour is in the winter months, as it’s not too hot. The tours run daily, and they start at around 12 pm and typically last for six hours.

Tickets cost around 250 AED per person. This is an adventure not to miss as it’s one of the best things to do in the UAE!

The Best Things to do in Abu Dhabi

9. Have a day out in Ferrari world

Ferrari world is a must-visit for car lovers and thrill seekers! It’s located on Yas Island, and it’s home to the world’s fastest roller coaster; I’m talking going from 0km to 245km in seconds! You can explore all their rides and buy tickets on the Ferrari World website.

Tickets cost around 250 AED per person. F1 fans flock from all over the world to visit this park, so it has to be deemed as one of the best things to do in the UAE.

10. Take a tour of the presidential palace: Qasr Al Watan

Qasr Al Watan is the presidential palace in Abu Dhabi, and it’s one of the best places to visit in Abu Dhabi (with reason, look at the images below!). Tours to see Qasr Al Watan run daily, and they last for around one hour. Tickets cost 65 AED per person (you save 10% if you book directly via their website), and you can book directly on the Qasr Al Watan website.

The best part of the tour is getting to see the grandiose rooms and hallways of the palace, not to mention the entrance.

The Best Things to do in Abu Dhabi

11. Take a sunset boat ride at the marina

One of the best ways to relax in Abu Dhabi is by taking a sunset boat ride at the Marina. You can just sit back, enjoy the views, and soak up the peaceful atmosphere. Boat rides start at around 250 AED per person, and they last for around two hours.

You can book directly with Marina via their website. They offer a variety of different boat rides, and they have experienced and friendly staff.

If you’re looking for things to do in Abu Dhabi that are romantic or relaxing, this is a great option. Boat rides are available daily, and they depart between 4-5 pm.

The Best Things to do in Abu Dhabi

12. Shop til you drop at Marina Mall or Yas Mall

If you love to shop, then Marina Mall is the place for you. It’s one of the best shopping malls in Abu Dhabi, and it has over 400 stores. You can find everything from high-end designer brands to fast fashion retailers.

Shopping is genuinely one of the best things to do in the UAE. Marina Mall is located in the Marina area of Abu Dhabi, and it’s easy to get to by bus or taxi.

If you’re looking for a cheaper option, then Yas Mall is also a great choice. It has over 500 stores, and it’s located on Yas Island. I know readers in this blog are looking for more adventurous and cheap things to do in Abu Dhabi, but the malls are a big part of Abu Dhabi’s culture and are also a big part of their social life, so it’s interesting to experience this first hand!

A 5-day itinerary for Abu Dhabi

13. Reach new heights at CLYMB

Another one for the thrill seekers. CLYMB is an indoor adventure centre, and it’s one of the best things to do in Abu Dhabi if you’re looking for an adrenaline rush! Home to the largest indoor skydiving centre and the UAE’s biggest indoor climbing wall, it’s the perfect place to challenge yourself.

Abu Dhabi attractions really like to lean into the extreme if you haven’t noticed yet. You can buy tickets for both skydiving and climbing on their website. Tickets cost around 400 AED per person.

Thrill seekers would definitely rate this as one of the top things to do in Abu Dhabi.

14. Go on a sunrise kayak tour through the mangroves

If you want to get away from the city, I recommend taking a kayak tour through the Eastern Mangrove National Park. It’s a great way to see wildlife and get some exercise! The Eastern Mangrove National Park is located on the outskirts of Abu Dhabi, and it is one of the best places to go for a nature hike or kayak trip.

Kayak tours start at around 150 AED, and they include all of the necessary equipment. The best company to book the kayak tour with is Sea-Hawks. They are the lead tour operator for kayaking tours and water activities in UAE.

The kayak tours last for around two hours, and they are suitable for all levels of fitness. When putting together your itinerary for Abu Dhabi, this is one thing not to miss as it’s one of the top things to do in Abu Dhabi, as well as one of the best things to do in the UAE.

15. Visit the National Aquarium

The National Aquarium is one of the best places to visit in Abu Dhabi, especially if you’re travelling with kids but not exclusively to those! I think we all have an inner child in us that craves a trip to the underwater wonders of the world!

The National Aquarium is located on Yas Island, and it’s home to over 140 different species of marine life. The best part of the aquarium is the underwater tunnel, where you can walk through and see the fish swimming all around you. Trust me; it’s a really cool experience! (Not if you don’t like sharks, though).

Tickets to the National Aquarium are sold on their   website and cost around 95 AED for adults, and they include access to all of the exhibits. The aquarium is open from Sunday – Wednesday from 11 am.

16. See Abu Dhabi from above on a seaplane tour

Abu Dhabi is such a picturesque city that it’s definitely worth seeing from above. You can book a seaplane tour that takes off from Yas Marina, and you’ll get to see the city skyline and desert landscapes from a whole new perspective.

Tours typically last for around 30 minutes, and tickets cost around 700 AED per person. You can book directly with Seawings , or you can book through your hotel. The ticket price may be high for this one, but this is one of the best things to do in Abu Dhabi, especially if you’re into photography and adventure.

And that brings us to the end of the best things to do in Abu Dhabi! As one of the best places to visit in the UAE, this city definitely doesn’t disappoint and should be on your travel bucket list. From luxury experiences to natural adventures, there’s something for everyone in Abu Dhabi.

3. Enjoy the opulence of Emirates Palace

The five-star luxury hotel Emirates Palace still continues to be a draw ever since it opened in 2005. Now it is under new ownership, having transferred from Kempinski to Mandarin Oriental in 2020. The hotel is known for its opulence with a majority of its suites furnished in gold and marble.

Head to the hotel's cafe to enjoy a 23-karat gold-flaked cappuccino, a camel burger or afternoon tea. For those who aren't staying overnight, there are also a number of fine-dining spots such as Hakkasan, Talea by Antonio Guida, Martabaan by Hemant Oberoi, Las Brisas and Mezlai.

4. Learn more about the history of Abu Dhabi at Qasr Al Hosn

Discover the extraordinary history of Abu Dhabi by taking a visit to its oldest heritage site, Al Hosn, which has sections dating back to the 1760s. It also has Qasr Al Hosn, the oldest and most significant historic building in the capital, which housed the ruling family for centuries and was the emirate’s original seat of government.

The complex’s other major components include the Cultural Foundation , established in 1981 as the first multipurpose cultural centre in the UAE, and the House of Artisans , which is dedicated to preserving and promoting traditional Emirati crafts and practices.

6. Visit Louvre Abu Dhabi

If it's culture you seek, then Louvre Abu Dhabi should be your first port of call on any visit to the emirate. Surrounded by the Arabian Gulf, the gleaming silver dome of the Arab world’s first global museum is almost otherworldly and effortlessly sets the scene for an afternoon admiring some of the world’s finest art. Inside, exhibitions change regularly with pieces often on loan from the world's most-visited museum, the Louvre in France.

The museum grounds are also a beautiful place for a stroll, with lots of al fresco exhibits to see and, if you’re feeling adventurous, you can sign up to kayak around the museum — tours leave nightly at sunset and require pre-booking. If you’re visiting with family, don’t miss the Children’s Museum, where you'll find hands-on, interactive exhibits. Children also enter free of charge, meaning it's not an expensive day out.

7. Wander Qasr Al Watan

One of the newer additions to the capital's cultural line-up is the breathtaking Qasr Al Watan , or the People’s Palace. Located on the seafront near Emirates Palace, the landmark is inside the presidential palace compound. Visitors can find out more about the UAE’s traditions and values by exploring this beautiful structure.

If you’re visiting with little ones, be sure to get them set up with the children’s multimedia guide. This audio tour includes simplified explanations of the palace's treasures, interactive games and virtual badges to collect as they tour Qasr Al Watan, keeping them easily engaged.

8. Soak in nature at Jubail Mangrove Park

When the weather cools, one of the most serene places to do explore nature in the capital is on Jubail Island.

Start at the Jubail Mangrove Park , where you can wander over the waterways via a winding boardwalk, with various trails to choose from depending on how long you want your walk to be. Keep an eye out for local birds, fish and animals as you wander, stopping at the park’s floating platform for a better view of life under the water.

There are specially trained rangers on hand to answer any questions you may have about this sprawling mangroves habitat and you can also hop on a kayak to see some of the more hidden sections of this million-square-metre area.

If all that fresh air whets your appetite for a nature-inspired sleepover, book a room at Pura Eco Retreat , Abu Dhabi's first eco-resort. Here you can spend the night in a nature-surrounded dome with unrestricted access to Abu Dhabi’s mangroves or if you're not looking for a staycation, book a table to enjoy dinner by the waterside.

9. Marvel at the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque

The sprawling landmark can hold up to 55,000 people at a time, and hourly tours are free of charge. 11. Enjoy pristine shorelines on Saadiyat Island

Saadiyat Beach Club offers endless ocean views and a sparkling infinity pool

If it’s pristine shorelines and endless blue water that you crave, then Saadiyat Island should be on your to-do list. Spend a few nights on the island to really unwind; you'll have your choice of several five-star hotels including Rixos Premium Saadiyat Island, The St Regis Saadiyat Island Resort, Saadiyat Rotana Resort & Villas, Park Hyatt Abu Dhabi and Jumeirah at Saadiyat Island Resort. All of the hotels have gorgeous swimming pools, private stretches of beach and some top-notch places to dine.

If you’re not staying overnight, you can still enjoy the Saadiyat shoreline. Spend the day at Saadiayat Beach Club or head to Soul Beach, part of the Mamsha Al Saadiyat Community. Visits to this beach cost from Dh50 and include access to a kilometre of pristine shoreline, sun loungers with parasols and friendly staff ready to serve you ice-cold beverages and snacks.

While you're there, keep your eyes peeled for hawksbill turtles that nest on the beaches at certain times of the year, and there have also been dolphins spotted off the coast.

12. Make a night of it at Coya Abu Dhabi

Abu Dhabi often gets a reputation for being quiet and more family-oriented. And while it certainly does tick both those boxes if that's what you're looking for, there's also plenty of upscale restaurants and decent nightspots if you're seeking a more grown-up affair.

For fine dining and a fun night out in the heart of the city, complete with waterfront views and live entertainment, dinner at Coya Abu Dhabi is well worth considering.

Located in Four Seasons Hotel Abu Dhabi at The Galleria Al Maryah Island, the split-level restaurant offers a huge terrace overlooking the water that’s the perfect place to dine in the cooler months. Feast on delicious Latin American dishes paired with creative drinks that use herbs grown in the restaurant's on-site plant nursery.

If you want to get more hands-on, try the interactive masterclass where expert chefs will guide you through everything you need to know to be able to whip up several ceviches, Peru’s most famous dish. After dark, enjoy live entertainment and DJs in the brightly decorated bar.

Stretching across eight kilometres in the heart of the capital, Abu Dhabi’s picturesque Corniche is a great place to enjoy the winter sunshine, talk a sunset stroll or have a family picnic by the ocean.

Sunseekers can enjoy the two-kilometre beach on the Corniche which is divided into three sections with areas for families, singles and larger groups. There are showers, changing rooms and cabanas available, and sun loungers and umbrellas can be hired for a fee. Sunbathers can enjoy views of the Arabian Gulf and Lulu Island, backed by towering palm trees.

If you're looking for something more active, there's several children’s play areas, cycle lanes and pedestrian pathways and free sports facilities, including five volleyball courts, two football pitches and three playing fields.

Rent a speedboat to see the Abu Dhabi skyline from the water or enjoy a bite to eat al fresco at the several cafes and restaurants dotted along the walkway. And if you walk to the very top of the Corniche you'll be at Emirates Palace , which is the place to go if you want to tick off sampling a gold-dusted cappuccino from your bucket list.

15. Savour the views from the Observation Deck At 300

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Conrad Abu Dhabi Etihad Towers (@conradetihadtowers)

While Dubai might be home to the world's tallest building, Abu Dhabi isn't afraid of heights, either. Observation Deck at 300, Conrad Abu Dhabi Etihad Towers , is the city's highest building. Perched 282 metres above the city, the glass-fronted restaurant is on the 74th floor of the hotel and offers amazing views of the capital with vistas over the Arabian Gulf, the Corniche and Emirates Palace.

Telescopes are available for zeroing in on any specific parts of the view you want to see in more detail, and if you time your visit for sunset, you're in for a treat. If tiny sandwiches, delicate cakes and hot-toasted scones are something you enjoy, the afternoon tea allows visitors to drink in the city views alongside a freshly brewed cuppa and a tiered platter of treats.

Where to Stay in Abu Dhabi

To spend your Abu Dhabi vacation, you needn’t do massive research as there are quite a number of hotels present in the city. We’ve stayed in our fair share of luxury hotels in Abu Dhabi that focus on quality, comfort, and aren’t going to burn a hole in your pocket.

Radisson Blu Abu Dhabi : We booked ourselves an Executive Suite at Radisson Blu Abu Dhabi and enjoyed the gorgeous view of Abu Dhabi Corniche from our windows. The hotel has a huge breakfast display that serves international cuisine when you’re staying in Abu Dhabi. Read more about our experience here.

Park Hyatt Abu Dhabi Hotel & Villas: If you’re more of an out-of-city person and would like a great option for Abu Dhabi beach hotels, then I recommend Park Hyatt with all my heart. We had a beautiful 2 day stay there and spent time exploring Saadiyat Island. Here’s how you can check rates for this beautiful resort.

Holiday Inn Abu Dhabi: Although I haven’t personally stayed at Holiday Inn’s Abu Dhabi branch, I can vouch for the hotel in terms of service, convenience, and affordability. Best Places to Visit in Abu Dhabi

The first stop on your Abu Dhabi day trip would be to visit the Abu Dhabi landmarks. I say day trip because these Abu Dhabi tourist attractions are better seen during the day to actually marvel their beauty!

places to visit in abu dhabi 2022

Visit the largest mosque in the U.A.E. – The Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque is the largest in the country with splendid décor made of marble and one of the most popular Abu Dhabi tourist spots. The Masjid (mosque) has become one of the most visited tourist attractions in Abu Dhabi solely due to the unique architectural work and awareness of Muslim culture. A tip would be to visit on the weekdays as weekends are too crowded ( https://goo.gl/maps/RXmkBRWbR472 )

Want a tour to explore Abu Dhabi like a tourist? Check out this half-day Abu Dhabi city tour!

If you are a tourist, you must remember to wear modest clothing with shoulders and knees covered during your visit to Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque. Women should have their heads covered to respect Islamic culture

Ride the fastest roller coaster in the world – Ferrari World is the first branded amusement park by Ferrari. Adventure seekers should definitely not miss Formula Rossa, which is the fastest roller coaster in the world ( https://goo.gl/maps/UMahQfeVX2k )

Holiday in Abu Dhabi Louvre

Get inspired at Louvre Abu Dhabi – As a direct extension of the Louvre in France, this one of a kind art museum in Abu Dhabi is the largest museum in the region. The stunning design has been inspired by shade cast by date palm fronds on a surface. Since there is mostly a queue to enter the Louvre in Abu Dhabi, I suggest getting skip the line tickets to make sure you don’t waste time lining up. Here’s how you can check them.   ( https://goo.gl/maps/TYDjsqt25LC2 )

Go on a Desert Safari – This is the touristiest thing to do while in the United Arab Emirates, however, it would be a crime to miss it. Desert Safari is basically a ride along sand dunes on a jeep. The package includes getting henna tattooed, watching belly dance shows, and a chance to ride on camels. Check the updated discount rates for Desert Safari in Abu Dhabi.

Best Things to do in Abu Dhabi

Apart from the popular places to see in Abu Dhabi, I will also give you some hidden gems to explore while you’re in the city! Abu Dhabi is quite underrated when people talk about the best place to visit in the U.A.E.

  • Watch Abu Dhabi from above – If Dubai has Burj Khalifa, then Abu Dhabi has Observation Deck at 300. Its 74th floor is the highest point where you can have a bird’s view of the capital of the United Arab Emirates (https://goo.gl/maps/6zJSY5v859o)
  • Learn how to pearl dive – Abu Dhabi Pearl Journey offers an exciting tour which shows how the Arabs used to dive for pearls in the olden days to earn their living. Watch how pearl diving is done and oysters are cut open to find a pearl that you can keep as a souvenir at the end of the visit (https://goo.gl/maps/8aLn9r3GiGQ2)
  • Feed animals at Emirates Park Zoo and Resort – Animal lovers can visit the Emirates Park Zoo and Resort which is a short drive from Abu Dhabi city. The zoo has a lot of experiences to offer that you will remember for a lifetime. having breakfast with giraffes and crocodile feeding are pretty popular with residents and tourists alike, apart from parrot shows and lunching with leopards. Here’s where you can get more information and click here for discounted rates on tickets. (https://goo.gl/maps/QP3Nhh7Jpa92)
  • Go camping in the desert – Camping in the desert is one of the activities to try when you are in the capital. There are plenty of tours available, but you can also go your way. The night time is when it really gets chilly so be sure to pack warm wear if you cannot bear low temperatures. The stars really shine brighter in the desert as it is away from the city and the experience of sitting next to a bonfire will sure be a memorable experience
  • Walk along Abu Dhabi Corniche – Apart from being the only awarded eco-friendly beach in UAE, Abu Dhabi Corniche also offers you some pretty great activities while you’re there. There is an open “gym” set up for fitness minds, playground for kids, small eateries to explore, and a bicycle track for bikers. A tour of Abu Dhabi Corniche is also included in when you sign up for a half day city tour of Abu Dhabi, check the price here.

Get a discounted rate for Cyacle Pass here.

  • Get yourself some “24 karat magic” – Dubai is known as the city of gold but really, Abu Dhabi is where most of the locals come to shop as prices are comparatively lower. Most tourists head to Gold Souq in Dubai and Abu Dhabi is where a person should visit if they want to beat the crowd

umm-al-emarat-abu-dhabi-guide

  • Go to a Botanical Garden – Umm Al Emarat Park is a great place to take the kids. The park has a maze, a botanical garden, and an animal barn. Look at the lush greenery at this spot! My little one is just over a year, but if you have older kids it can be a nice educational experience for them to learn about the different kinds of plants.I would like to say that I took my kid to the animal barn, but since we visited in April, the heat was too much for us to take in so we couldn’t. Definitely during the cooler months as it is one of the best places to visit from Dubai.

What and Where to Eat in Abu Dhabi

I find food in Abu Dhabi more authentic compared to Dubai, where competitive restaurants have forgotten their roots and focus more on theatrics and high prices with almost no attention to taste and service.

Of course, there are a few great places that deserve all the hype and I always highlight them in lists like Best Breakfasts in Dubai and Brunches in Dubai , but the majority are turning out to be very repetitive in terms of concept.

Whenever I am on an Abu Dhabi trip, I make sure to try local spots to find the best hidden gems serving street food in Abu Dhabi. Find below some of my favorite places to eat in Abu Dhabi for Arabic food:

Felafel: Malik Al Felafel is in Khalidiya and very close to where my sister lives (the place I mostly hang around when in the capital) The owner is a friendly chap who is always ready for a chat! The felafels are very crispy and fulfilling! They come quite affordable at 3 pieces for AED 1. We always have it as a takeaway but you can stop by and sit around for a while to take a look at the menu ( https://goo.gl/maps/LVNvMsyGNhv )

Shawarma: I know shawarma is a big deal in this country and everyone has a favorite place. My place to usually stop for shawarma is from a Lebanese joint named Karam Al Sham who specializes in Chicken and Beef Shawarma. Both are great and different in their own way. ( https://goo.gl/maps/PxjrQXm3McK2 )

Being a big fan of this snack, I would love to hear if you have any suggestions of your own. ‘Cause sharing is caring, right?

Karak Chai: This has to be Tea Break! I think most of the folks living in Abu Dhabi will agree that Tea Break is the best place to grab a Karak. I’ve seen such a crowd during the weekends and a queue is always a good sign. The restaurant does not just limit to serving good tea but also have some finger food if you’re feeling hungry

mandi-abu-dhabi-food

Mandi: Mandi is traditional UAE food made with rice, meat, and spices. The meat is slow cooked, hence extremely soft and “fall off the bone”. Mandi is served with a tomato sauce and yogurt to enhance the dish with spicy and tangy flavors. It is important to note that this dish is eaten with hands as it really brings out the taste.

I like Al Marhabani located in Al Dhafrah, a hidden gem although now becoming very popular with the residents in the area. The service might not necessarily be friendly but the atmosphere and food are as authentic as it can get. ( https://goo.gl/maps/9gxmqkBTUCq )

Lugaimat:  Think deep-fried dough balls topped with drizzles of date syrup and sesame seeds! Lugaimat is a popular street dessert in the UAE, and a must when you are planning your Abu Dhabi vacation. It available is most places serving Emirati food but Lgaimat and Chebab is famous for this sweet treat and that is where you should try Lugaimat! ( https://goo.gl/maps/n3aEU717UgH2 )

Of course, other snacks or “street food” includes the very popular Oman Chips, Areej juice, and Laban sold very cheap for AED 1 and found in almost all groceries/ supermarkets. Do you have other snacks you swear by?

I hope I have covered everything when it comes to spending your holiday in Abu Dhabi in the best possible way. Have you been a resident in the other Emirates and have never visited Abu Dhabi? Then, this is THE guide for you!

Until then, happy traveling! x

16 things to know before going to Abu Dhabi

places to visit in abu dhabi 2022

With tips on packing, etiquette and safety, here's what you need to know before going to Abu Dhabi © frantic00 / Getty Images

With its rich cultural heritage, sublime landscapes, interesting museums, contemporary architecture, vibrant food scene and kind-hearted people, Abu Dhabi  is a delight.

Abu Dhabi fosters a sense of unhurried living where people take the time to chat. They’ll even go out of their way to show you around an art gallery or point you in the right direction should you find yourself looking for a certain bakery in a maze of backstreets.

With a sizable expat population in the UAE , Emiratis are no strangers to Western culture, but familiarizing yourself with Abu Dhabi’s cultural norms and etiquette makes every interaction more respectful. These practical tips can help you plan your itinerary and know what to expect in terms of weather, general health and safety.

1. Abu Dhabi is one of the safest cities in the world

Abu Dhabi is the kind of city where you could forget your wallet or passport in a taxi or mall food court, and you’re almost certain to find it there or have it returned to you by someone, cash and cards intact. Petty crimes such as pickpocketing and theft are uncommon. It’s generally safe for everyone to walk around late at night.

2. Plan to spend at least four days in Abu Dhabi

Spread over 67,340 sq km (26,000 sq miles), Abu Dhabi is the largest emirate in the UAE. Besides the Rub al Khali (the world’s largest continuous sand desert), it’s home to rugged mountains, a 700km-long (435-mile-long) coastline and nearly 200 islands – all offering diverse experiences that are best savored on an itinerary that doesn’t feel rushed.

While you’ll find museums, shopping malls, skyscrapers, theme parks and mangroves in Abu Dhabi city, the emirate is also home to Al Ain, where fortresses, oases, ancient tombs and mountains offer an unexpected glimpse of the UAE’s history. Traveling around Abu Dhabi slowly gives you the chance to venture out to the verdant oases of Liwa and admire the gigantic orange-red dunes of Rub Al Khali, a 2½-hour drive from the capital.

Kayakers paddle through waters surrounded by mangroves with city skyscrapers in the distance

3. Pack clothing and shoes for the outdoors

To fully appreciate Abu Dhabi’s wealth of outdoor experiences, it’s worth crafting an itinerary that includes activities like cycling along the Corniche , kayaking through the tidal lagoons of Jubail Mangrove Park , practicing your golf swing among saltwater lakes and sand dunes at Saadiyat Beach Golf Club and exploring the mighty dunes around Liwa Oasis by fat bike.

Depending on the season, pack clothing, shoes, a hat and a day pack for outdoor excursions and activities. Compared to the mild weather in the city and coast, temperatures in the interior region (such as the desert and mountains) can reach extremes. So, it’s a good idea to bring layers, especially if you plan on visiting between November and March. In summer, breathable fabrics like cotton and linen make it easier to bear the heat and humidity.

4. Get around by taxi with the Abu Dhabi Taxi app

If you plan on getting around Abu Dhabi by taxi, download the Abu Dhabi Taxi booking app ( App Store and Google Play ) on your smartphone in advance. You’ll thank yourself for doing so instead of trying to hail one on the street in 40°C (104°F) weather.

The app connects you to the nearest available taxi, which usually arrives at your location in under 10 minutes. You can also book a wheelchair-friendly taxi using the app. You’ll need to specify your pick-up and drop-off location, which means that you’re less likely to get lost, even when trying to reach a hole-in-the-wall biryani restaurant in Downtown Abu Dhabi.

Alternatively, for use in the wider country, download and use the UAE-based  Careem smartphone app to book rides.

5. Hop on the free shuttle or take the public bus

The complimentary Experience Abu Dhabi Shuttle Bus service connects eight routes around the city and attractions such as the Louvre Abu Dhabi , Qasr Al Hosn , Qasr Al Watan and Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque . These modern air-conditioned buses are wheelchair-accessible and are an excellent way to explore Abu Dhabi Island, Saadiyat Island and Yas Island.

To travel on public buses in Abu Dhabi and Al Ain, buy the prepaid Hafilat Smart Card at the Abu Dhabi Central Bus Station or any branch of the supermarket chain Lulu Hypermarket. Load money onto it using the recharge machines at bus stations. To pay, scan in and out on the validator in the buses. Bus journeys cost Dhs2 plus 5 fils per km.

6. Dress appropriately to blend in with the city’s residents

Choose to dress according to the setting of your planned activities for the day. To be respectful while visiting a museum, the markets in Al Mina or cultural sights such as Qasr Al Hosn and Wahat Al Karama , wear opaque clothing that is not body-hugging, covers your shoulders and falls well below the knee. This is also the appropriate way to dress while visiting Al Ain or smaller towns in the Liwa Oasis.

At religious sites like the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque, both men and women who are not modestly dressed in loose, opaque clothing that covers their arms and legs are asked to wear a robe over their clothes (you can buy one from a nearby shop, if there are none to borrow). At the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque and Abrahamic Family House , women will need a scarf to cover their heads.

To dine at a restaurant or visit a mall, dress as you would in any other city, keeping in mind that the locals are always well-groomed. Feel free to show off your style at nightclubs and bars that are located inside hotels.

For women, swimsuits and bikinis are acceptable at hotel swimming pools and public and private beaches. That being said, you’re more likely to see women in one-piece swimsuits and modest swimming attire on public beaches that aren’t located in expat-heavy residential areas. Female travelers might find it useful to carry a scarf or a shirt to cover their shoulders and arms if needed.

7. Respect privacy when photographing public spaces

While photographing sights around Abu Dhabi, pay attention to where your lens is pointed. Don’t take photos of people, especially women and children, without permission.

In the UAE, it’s illegal to photograph or take videos of people without their consent and share them on social media. While it’s unlikely that you’ll be arrested for taking a photo of an attraction where other people also appear, wait until they have moved out of the frame. Never attempt to zoom in and take portrait-style photos (of recognizable faces) without explicit consent.

8. Learn the local greeting and phrases

English is widely spoken but you’re likely to be greeted with the Emirati greeting “as salam alaykum” . Transcending the casual courtesy of an English “Hello”, it translates to “peace be upon you.” Responding with “walaykum as salam” and using “shukran”  (thank you) in Arabic will earn you the appreciation of locals.

9. Familiarize yourself with the rules of social interaction

When meeting an Emirati of the opposite sex, don’t reach out for a handshake. Wait for them to offer their hand first; it is likely that instead you will be greeted with a smile and them placing their right hand on their heart as a mark of respect – you should respond the same way.

Physical contact among members of the same sex is common, usually as handshakes (always with the right hand) when you’re getting acquainted. Emirati men may also greet each other with a nose-to-nose kiss or cheek-to-cheek kisses, with the latter also being common among Emirati women.

10. Be aware of the rules of non-verbal communication

In Emirati culture, non-verbal communication is important, so be conscious of your body language, especially in formal situations. Whether in a majlis , an Emirati home, or a government office, don’t sit with your knees crossed over each other, or with one leg resting on the other knee such that your foot is pointing at or your sole is facing someone – as both are insulting.

Pointing at someone with your index finger, beckoning with it, or wagging it while emphasizing your point is rude.

Use your right hand to accept or offer something, such as a cup of gahwa (Arabic coffee) or money, and to eat (the left hand is reserved for the toilet).

Rude gesturing (showing someone the middle finger) and hurling profanities is illegal and can lead to fines, imprisonment and deportation.

11. Behave appropriately during Ramadan

The month of Ramadan is a time of prayer for Muslims who fast from dawn to sunset. For those not fasting, food and drinks are readily available during the day at restaurants and cafes in shopping malls, hotels and elsewhere.

The law requires that non-Muslim visitors only eat and drink (including water and chewing gum) at restaurants and designated spots (such as mall food courts) out of consideration for those fasting. Most non-fasting residents maintain discretion as a matter of social courtesy. You will not be arrested for sipping water outside on a hot day, but do your best to do so out of sight, and be ready to apologize if required.

Don’t blast loud music in public places – use headphones instead. Modest dressing in clothes that cover the shoulders and legs is appreciated.

A woman wearing modest clothing stands in a courtyard of a vast white mosque complex

12. Know the code of conduct at the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque

The Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque is an active place of worship where physical contact between visitors, even when posing for a photograph, is inappropriate. Don’t touch, hold hands or have an arm around your companion while having photos taken – security will approach you and ask you to delete the photo. You’re not allowed to gesture (so no victory signs or thumbs up). Don’t attempt to lie down on the exquisite carpet while taking photos inside the prayer halls.

13. Public displays of affection are frowned upon

Kissing, hugging and other public displays of affection are frowned upon, and prohibited at religious sites such as the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque. These days, holding hands does not raise eyebrows, but use your judgment according to the setting. It’s probably okay to do so in a shopping mall or at the beach, but not at the fish market or the Abrahamic Family House. Same-sex relationships are illegal in Abu Dhabi.

14. There is no tolerance for drunken behavior

In Abu Dhabi, alcohol is available at licensed restaurants and bars, and consumption of alcohol in unauthorized locations (such as a public beach) is illegal. While it's perfectly acceptable to have a good time, there is zero tolerance for rash, loud and aggressive behavior as a result of having had one too many. That means swearing, rude gestures, picking fights or causing a public nuisance are all illegal and punishable by imprisonment and fines.

15. Don’t drink and drive, even over short distances

Driving under the influence of alcohol is a crime in the UAE and can result in imprisonment and fines upwards of Dhs20,000, should you find yourself in an accident. If you plan on drinking, leave the rental car behind and take a taxi instead.

16. Make note of emergency numbers

In case of emergencies and the need for rescue, evacuation or urgent medical assistance, contact Abu Dhabi Police on 999.

Like all cities, to save you time and energy it’s best to look at the map and plan to visit attractions in one part of the city together and then focus on another section on another day.

In this Abu Dhabi travel blog, I also help you group together and plan your days like recommending seeing the Louvre Abu Dhabi and Jubail Mangrove Park together as they are both on one side of the city with not much else around and there’s no point in going over there twice in one trip.

1. Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque

Without a doubt, the top place to visit in Abu Dhabi is Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque because it’s stunning and one-of-a-kind but also because it’s the iconic Abu Dhabi photo and photo spot!

The mosque is free to enter so get this on your list of places to visit in Abu Dhabi for free and the mosque is open all week for most of the day.

Here’s a post I wrote for we are travel girls a few years ago about how to visit Sheikh Zayed Mosque and what to expect.

On this note, if you are female, also be sure to read my post on what to wear in Abu Dhabi which will also help you with what to wear in Abu Dhabi Grand Mosque.

I do advise going to the mosque just before sunset and then you’ll get to see it in daytime golden hour and also at night, plus you’ll be there for sunset prayer and hear the call to prayer which is truly magical.

Scroll down to number 26 on this list of Abu Dhabi things to do to see where to get an amazing photo of the mosque from where you can get the whole mosque in the frame with water in front.

2. Qasr AlWatan

Qasr in Arabic means palace which is a word you’ll get used to in Abu Dhabi. So Qasr AlWatan means ‘Palace of the Nations ‘.

This is high on my list of things to do in Abu Dhabi because it is absolutely incredible to visit and easily one of the top Abu Dhabi attractions . I could not get over the grander here!

You have to purchase a ticket online in advance or at the door and a bus will take you a short journey to the palace. Here you can walk around the huge courtyard before going inside.

This palace in Abu Dhabi was only opened in 2015 and it’s a working presidential palace so it’s in incredible condition and built with a mix of modern and traditional Arabic architecture.

You might have seen photos of people standing in a gold art piece in Abu Dhabi and this is into Qasr AlWatan so if you’re searching for Abu Dhabi Instagram spots , this is one of the best ones!

3. Qasr AlHosn

Another palace to visit in Abu Dhabi is Qasr AlHosn , this has a very different look to Qasr AlWatan but it’s fascinating to visit!

This is a fort and it’s actually the oldest stone building in Abu Dhabi .

Abu Dhabi has grown rapidly fast and visiting Qasr AlHosn is a great way to get an idea of what this part of Abu Dhabi looked like before it developed as we see it today.

The museum is inside in air-con so it’s one of the good indoor activities in Abu Dhabi and then you go outside to see some more parts of the fort.

I really liked the square that Qasr AlHosn is located in, there are a few cafes around so be sure to combine this stop with a coffee or lunch on your Abu Dhabi itinerary,

And if you are Muslim, there are really amazing prayer rooms by The Espresso Lab which is a minute away from Qasr AlHosn.

4. Gold Coffee or Ice Cream at Emirates Palace

The Emirates Palace is so iconic. I’d go as far as staying it’s the second most iconic place in Abu Dhabi after the Sheikh Zayed mosque so you have to add this to your list of places to go in Abu Dhabi .

The hotel is world-famous and a luxury 5-star hotel and thankfully you don’t have to stay here to visit.

You can enter the Emirates Palace for free , have a look around and dine in one of the cafes or restaurants.

Things to do in Abu Dhabi, Emirates Palace from outside with flag

I recommend going to Le Cafe as I did which is on the ground floor of the hotel and no reservations are needed. Here you can order a variety of drinks including a Gold Cappuccino , a Gold Matcha Latte and Gold covered Ice Cream .

You don’t have to book a ticket in advance but if you want to so it’s all paid for, or as a gift for someone else you can book this Le Cafe package which includes the Gold Cappuccino, and a Coffee or Tea and a slice of cake.

Things to do in Abu Dhabi, Emirates Palace Gold Matcha Latte with dates

They are priced higher than usual drinks and they don’t taste that different but how often can you say that you have drank or eaten gold! Only in Abu Dhabi, that’s what I say and why I had to add it to my own things to do in Abu Dhabi!

5. Louvre Abu Dhabi

Yes, the Louvre is not just in Paris! There is one in Abu Dhabi too and I loved visiting it!

I’m not hugely into art galleries and museums but the impressive architecture of the Louvre Abu Dhabi was enough to impress me.

Things to do in Abu Dhabi, inside The Louvre with water around the museum

As far as Abu Dhabi tourist attractions go, the Louvre is high on the list.

It is surrounded by some lovely and tranquil gardens with an amazing view of the city skyline. Go inside and you are taken through a maze of art and sculpture pieces from around the world and at every turn, you get a glimpse of the water surrounding the museum.

Things to do in Abu Dhabi, The Louvre from outside with blue water

At the end, you go outside and can sit by the water, have a meal or coffee in the restaurant and take in impressive dome structure from the inside .

I went for lunch at Aptitude Cafe after my visit to the Louvre which has an amazing view of the building, a great vibe and sells healthy drinks and meals so I really recommend it!

6. Kayaking at The Louvre

There are 3 great options for kayaking in Abu Dhabi and one of them is at the Louvre which you might not have expected, I certainly didn’t until searching for what to do in Abu Dhabi.

Sea-Hawks Water Sports can take you out onto the Arabian Sea for 1 hour to see the architecture of the building from another perspective and to learn more about the museum.

Children as young as 6 years old can go on this although until 12 years old they must be accompanied by an adult so its one of the great things to do in Abu Dhabi with kids.

7. Kayaking in Eastern Mangrove National Park

For a super relaxing but educational and interesting kayaking experience in Abu Dhabi, check out this 2 hour kayaking trip in Eastern Mangrove National Park .

This mangrove is thriving in around 60 species including turtles and fish and this kayaking trip in Abu Dhabi allows you to get close to the mangroves, learn about the importance of them to Abu Dhabi city and you’ll stop halfway through at a beach and can swim if you want.

This is the longest kayaking trip you’ll get in Abu Dhabi, below I give you the experience of kayaking in Jubail Mangrove Park which I did but this was just a 1-hour trip whereas this is 2 hours!

Click here to make a booking as you have to book in advance

8. Kayaking in Jubail Mangrove Park

The third opportunity to kayak in Abu Dhabi is at Jubail Mangrove Park. Jubail is another one of the islands in Abu Dhabi but it is connected by a bridge.

This actually works well paired with a trip to the Louvre as they are on the same side of the city. I went to The Louvre at 12:00 and then to Jubail Mangrove at 15:00.

Things to do in Abu Dhabi, kayak shop at Jubail Mangrove Park

The kayaking experience is 1 hour and you go out with a group and leader. We didn’t kayak that far and we thought we’d kayak through more overgrown mangroves whereas most of it was in open water but we did stop at a sand island halfway through before heading back and it was a really unique thing to do in Abu Dhabi so we enjoyed it and our guide was great to chat to and helpful.

It’s also one of the good things to do in Abu Dhabi for families due to the ease of the kayaking and as a way to get out of the city and into nature.

9. Jubail Mangrove Park Board Walk

Jubail Mangrove Park is the first self-contained educational, nature and leisure destination  of it’s kind in Abu Dhabi and has been designed to make people aware of the important ecological function of the mangrove which protects the Abu Dhabi coastline.

Being here is so calming and you can’t believe the city is so close.

There is a visitor centre which is where the boardwalk starts and the kayaking starts. The boardwalk is a short walk alongside the mangroves in a relaxing setting and is great for photo opportunities. There’s also a cafe at the visitor centre so you can stay and take in the views a little longer after your walk or kayaking session.

10. Evening Desert safari

Can you visit the UAE and not go on a desert safari?? Not really!

A desert safari is one of the fun things to do in Abu Dhabi ! Yes, it is very touristy but it’s also a fun afternoon and evening and easy because you don’t have to think about a thing, the guides sort everything!

We got picked up at our hotel at 14:00 by our jeep guide and drove 1 hour into the Abu Dhabi dessert, we let down the tires a bit, met the other jeeps and the thrill of dune bashing started!

This is the most highly rated desert safari tour in Abu Dhabi and it’s a great price. Bookings are needed in advance so click here to check availability!

Things to do in Abu Dhabi, jeep dune bashing

We drove up and down the dunes dune bashing for about an hour or so stopping to see some camels on the way too before arriving at our camp where we could go on the quad bikes, sandboarding or just walk along the dunes until sunset and then enjoyed a buffet and some entertainment.

Both my husband and I had been on a desert safari in Dubai and we nearly cancelled this activity as it was on our last day in Abu Dhabi and the last of our things to do in Abu Dhabi but we went and we enjoyed it so much, it’s touristy and not an authentic dessert experience but you have to enjoy it for what it is!

Here are more highly rated desert safaris in Abu Dhabi to book in advance:

12. Abu Dhabi Hop On Hop Off Bus

Abu Dhabi city is big and all Abu Dhabi tourist attractions are quite far from each other. As with many cities around the world, the best and easiest way to see them all is a hop-on-hop-off bus !

This bus will take you to the best Abu Dhabi tourist spots and give you information about the city on the way.

Some people think these are too touristy but honestly, they are convenient and great value for money.

Getting around Abu Dhabi on your own means hiring a car and driving or getting taxis but communication with taxi drivers can be hard and waiting for taxis each time and the cost of them do add up.

Check out tickets for the Abu Dhabi hop-on hop-off bus here!

What’s even more unique about this Abu Dhabi activity is that you’ll pass by the flamingo sanctuary , stop in the mangroves and get to see what the full speed of your Rhino Rider speedboat is! This is definitely one of the fun things to do in Abu Dhabi!

27. Etihad Modern Art Gallery

If you enjoy art and art galleries then the Etihad Modern Art Gallery must be on your list of places to visit in Abu Dhabi for art.

This is a unique art gallery with modern art by local and international artists.

28. Al Wathba Wetland Reserve

You may think that wetlands and the desert landscape of Abu Dhabi don’t go together and neither does it go with the city landscape but there are wetlands in Abu Dhabi!

Al Wathba Wetland Reserve was once a coastal salt flat but it has now flourished into natural and man-made lake where many species can flourish, including flamingos !

There are 2 self-guided walking trails (1.5 kilometres or 3 kilometres) which are free but there are no toilet or food facilities so come prepared for this and enjoy the serenity!

29. Al Wathba Salt Lake

If you’ve been searching photos of Abu Dhabi on Instagram, you might have seen some photos with bright green water and people posing by them, these are the salt lakes in Abu Dhabi also known as long Salt lakes .

They are man-made lakes on either side of a road filled with green water and encrusted by salt which has also formed into circles in places giving it even more of an interesting look.

You will need your own transport to get here and it might be on the tricker side to find. Of course, please do be respectful as this is not a designated tourist attraction in Abu Dhabi so there is no one to clean up after you.

30. Abu Dhabi Aquarium

Abu Dhabi Aquarium is a great place to visit with kids and a great indoor activity in Abu Dhabi and because this is the UAE you know this is going to be one of the best and most immersive aquariums you’ll go to!

Click here to book tickets in advance!

31. Wahat Al Karama

Wahat Al Karama is a tribute that honours the Emirati martyrs who sacrificed their lives in service of their country and a lovely memorial to see in the city.

It is located opposite the Abu Dhabi Grand Mosque and if you are wondering where and how people often get an amazing shot of the mosque with water in front and often with them stood or sat down with the whole mosque in front of them?? That’s here!

32. Marsa Mina Food Trucks

The weather in the evening in Abu Dhabi can be lovely and what better way to enjoy it than choosing food from a huge range of food trucks at Marsa Mina!

Actually, a lot more is on offer at Marsa Mina! It’s a maritime-themed waterfront destination open all day serving family-friendly dishes in various food trucks and there are shops and shows around to keep everyone entertained.

If you are stuck for something to do, searching whats on at Marsa Mina is a great way to find out things to do in Abu Dhabi today!

33. Founders Memorial

The Founders Memorial is one of the new Abu Dhabi attractions that only opened in 2018 . It is a cultural attraction to celebrate the life and values of Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan , the founder of the UAE and also known as the Father of the Nation.

It only requires a quick visit on your itinerary for Abu Dhabi and is best explored with the Qasr AlWatan Emirates Palace or a Corniche walk because it is close to all of these.

The main thing to see is a piece of artwork featuring a three-dimensional portrait of Sheikh Zayed .

Things to do in Abu Dhabi, founders memorial constellation of Sheikh Zayed's head

On first appearance, it’s hard to work out its significance but I went into the small founders memorial museum and paid a small fee to watch a video on its creation of it where I realised that 1,327 geometric shapes create a constellation that looks like Sheikh Zayed’s head and when you can see this in the artwork after, it’s pretty impressive.

At night it lights up so that’s a good time to visit and one of the good things to do in Abu Dhabi at night and there are a few gardens surrounding to relax in.

34. The Old Souk

It’s always great to visit a souk in Middle Eastern countries on holiday and despite how modern Abu Dhabi is, there is still the chance to visit a traditional souk.

The Old Souk in Abu Dhabi is the oldest market in Abu Dhabi and is great to visit if you’re looking for Arabic spices, jewellery or even home decor bits but it’s equally great to visit even if you are just window shopping.

35. The Gold Souk

Located in Madinat Zayed Shopping Centre but also on Google Maps as Gold Souk Abu Dhabi is… the old souk in Abu Dhabi!

This is not a traditional market as you might expect, for that, you have to visit the Old Souk which is in a different part of the city, it’s inside a fairly modern shopping mall and there are many individual stores within here.

If you are looking for some Gold you can browse the shop windows easily before going in and it does have a less intimidating feeling than perhaps a traditional market does where you’re sometimes not sure if you’re being ripped off or not.

However, if you’re not in the market for gold, there’s no point in adding this to your Abu Dhabi sightseeing plan.

How to get the best flights??

I use Skyscanner to book all of my flights! I’m a huge fan of Skyscanner because I love how easy it is to compare different destinations and different dates for the best price and route!

For example, I type in ‘everywhere’ in the destination if I have fixed dates and want to find the best flights on those dates on Skyscanner.

And if I have a set destination I’ll look at the ‘month view’ to check the cheapest days to fly in that month!

36. Walk along The Corniche

The Middle East loves a corniche. This is a long stretch of path than runs down the water’s edge where lots of people come together to have picnics, eat, take their kids to the playgrounds, and walk and run.

Usually, the corniche comes alive at night when the temperature is cooler and I definitely recommend taking a late-night walk along here, it’s a great way to get a feel for local life as lots of locals will be there too.

I walked along here at about 10:00. pm on my own and felt totally safe too.

37. Activities on Hudayriyat Island

What’s incredible about Abu Dhabi is the range of areas and places to go in Abu Dhabi. Hudayriyat Island is one of those areas.

It’s connected to the main island of Abu Dhabi by a bridge so it’s easy to get there. There are a range of sports activities available like a bike park, skate park, cycling track, tennis courts, beach for swimming and even an obstacle course.

So get your sportswear on, head over here and see what you can do! This is definitely one of the great places to visit in Abu Dhabi with kids and as a family as there is plenty to keep them busy!

Abu Dhabi Day Trips:

Abu Dhabi is a great base to see more of the UAE from, here are some day trips from Abu Dhabi you can do and add to your Abu Dhabi itinerary!

I did a day trip to Al-Ain from Abu Dhabi which I absolutely loved and really recommend.

To get allll the information, read my full post: 8 Things To Do In Al Ain | Day Trip From Abu Dhabi or Dubai!

Al-Ain is nearly 2 hours from Abu Dhabi City but it is still in the Abu Dhabi Emirate even though it’s so close to the Oman border!

In one day, I visited Al-Ain Oasis which is an Oasis of Palm Grove trees and Al-Ain Palace Museum which was once the home of the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan who lived here until the ’60s, Al Jahili Fort and Qasr AlMuwaiji .

Things to do in Abu Dhabi, day trip to Al-Ain, Al-Ain Oasis

I find the growth of the UAE fascinating but apart from Qasr AlHosn in Abu Dhabi city, it is hard to see what Abu Dhabi and the UAE looked like before this and it really wasn’t that long ago.

So to see Al-Ain Palace which is very basic for a Palace in an old Arabic mud building design and thinking that the founding Father of the UAE lived here with his family until the ’60s is really interesting and eye-opening to see and really made me appreciate the city of Abu Dhabi much more afterwards.

For this day trip from Abu Dhabi, I recommend hiring a driver who will take you there, take you from attraction to attraction and bring you home. Give yourself from about 9:00 am to 17:00 – 18:00 to do the full day trip.

Here is a guided day tour package from Abu Dhabi to Al-Ain with a driver and local guide for a great price!

39. Telal Resort Al-Ain

Telal Resort is a luxury boutique resort in the stunning and unique oasis outside of Al-Ain.

The accommodation features poolside villas and if you haven’t planned your whole Abu Dhabi itinerary yet, I’d recommend checking this out and seeing if you can fit in a night’s stay here .

However, it’s also great as a day trip from Abu Dhabi because you can book one of their one-day heritage and cultural packages where you will be welcomed to their own Heritage Village in the morning with Arabic Coffee, dates and local sweats followed by a tour of the Heritage Village , then you can go camel or horse riding , try on traditional clothes , take a wildlife safari and end your day with an Arabic dinner before heading back to Abu Dhabi.

This is perfect for those who want an adventure day out in Abu Dhabi in the desert but want everything organised, a high level of service and a bit of luxury.

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Telal Resort Al Ain (@telalresortalain)

Yes, a day trip to Dubai from Abu Dhabi is possible as they are only 1.5 hours apart by car.

Getting from Abu Dhabi to Dubai via public transport is limited but you can get a taxi or hire a car and drive yourself.

I think Abu Dhabi is a great place to visit if you have already been to Dubai and want to get a different feel from the UAE and experience more UAE attractions but perhaps you want to pop back for a dose of Dubai life which you can do from Abu Dhabi.

Thank you for reading and I hope this things to do in Abu Dhabi blog post has helped you plan your trip!

If you’re looking for the best places to visit in Abu Dhabi, you’ve come to the right place. This blog post will give you an overview of the top things to do in Abu Dhabi, so you can make the most out of your time in this amazing city. Abu Dhabi is the capital of the United Arab Emirates and is one of the most modern and cosmopolitan cities in the world.

It’s home to amazing architecture, world-class museums, and stunning beaches. There’s also quite a bit for the adventure seekers too (from kayaking to skydiving!). There’s something for everyone in Abu Dhabi, so whether you’re looking for a cultural experience or a fun-filled vacation, you’ll find it here.

I’ve already put together a  5-day itinerary for Abu Dhabi , which you can check out  here , but this list of the best places to visit in Abu Dhabi could stretch to a 7-day and even 10-day trip! There’s that much you can do there, really! And many of the main attractions in Abu Dhabi aren’t as expensive as you’d expect them to be. I can even go far as saying that there is a selection of cheap things to do in Abu Dhabi, believe it or not.

best places to visit in Abu Dhabi

If you want more information on where to stay and how to get to Abu Dhabi, you can find more information in this blog post. So if you’re looking for a lavish holiday or a more budget-friendly getaway, Abu Dhabi has got you covered.

Keep reading to find out what the best places to visit in Abu Dhabi are!

Let’s see the best places to visit in Abu Dhabi 2022

1. visit the biggest mosque in the uae: sheik zayed grand mosque.

One of the best places to visit in Abu Dhabi is to visit the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque. This mosque is truly a work of art, and it is one of the largest in the world.

It can accommodate over 40,000 worshippers at any given time, and it features 82 domes, over 1000 columns, 24-karat gold chandeliers, and the world’s largest hand-woven carpet. If you want to learn more about Islamic culture, this is the perfect place to start.

best places to visit in Abu Dhabi

Admission is 30 AED for adults.

best places to visit in Abu Dhabi

It might seem nothing can compare to the Louvre in Paris, but I promise you it is well worth a visit, or it wouldn’t be one of the best places to visit in Abu Dhabi.

Many of those who visit Abu Dhabi rave about this trip in particular, so it’s definitely one of the top things to do in Abu Dhabi, as well as one of the best places to visit in the UAE.

best places to visit in Abu Dhabi

Given the UAE is mostly desert, it’s definitely special if you can visit somewhere with some wildlife! You can book a day trip from Abu Dhabi that includes a safari tour of the island. Tickets cost around 500 AED per person.

7. Go on an evening desert safari tour

One of the best places to visit in Abu Dhabi is to go on a desert safari tour!

This is an adventure not to miss as it’s one of the best places to visit in the UAE!

8. Have a day out in Ferrari world

Ferrari world is a must-visit for car lovers and thrill seekers! It’s located on Yas Island, and it’s home to the world’s fastest roller coaster; I’m talking going from 0km to 245km in seconds! You can explore all their rides and buy tickets on the Ferrari World website.

best places to visit in Abu Dhabi

Tickets cost around 250 AED per person. F1 fans flock from all over the world to visit this park, so it has to be deemed as one of the best places to visit in the UAE.

They offer a variety of different boat rides, and they have experienced and friendly staff.

best places to visit in Abu Dhabi

If you’re looking for things to do or list of best places to visit in Abu Dhabi that are romantic or relaxing, this is a great option. Boat rides are available daily, and they depart between 4-5 pm.

11. Shop til you drop at Marina Mall or Yas Mall

If you love to shop, then Marina Mall is the place for you. It’s one of the best shopping malls in Abu Dhabi, and it has over 400 stores. You can find everything from high-end designer brands to fast fashion retailers.

Shopping is genuinely one of the best places to visit in the UAE. Marina Mall is located in the Marina area of Abu Dhabi, and it’s easy to get to by bus or taxi.

best places to visit in Abu Dhabi

If you’re looking for a cheaper option, then Yas Mall is also a great choice. It has over 500 stores, and it’s located on Yas Island. I know readers in this blog are looking for more adventurous and cheap things to do in Abu Dhabi, but the malls are a big part of Abu Dhabi’s culture and are also a big part of their social life, so it’s interesting to experience this first hand!

12. Reach new heights at CLYMB

Another one for the thrill seekers.  CLYMB is an indoor adventure centre, and it’s one of the best places to visit in Abu Dhabi if you’re looking for an adrenaline rush!

Thrill seekers would definitely rate this as one of the top things to do in Abu Dhabi.

best places to visit in Abu Dhabi

When putting together your itinerary for Abu Dhabi, this is one thing not to miss as it’s one of the top things to do in Abu Dhabi, as well as one of the best places to visit in the UAE.

15. See Abu Dhabi from above on a seaplane tour

Abu Dhabi is such a picturesque city that it’s definitely worth seeing from above. You can book a seaplane tour that takes off from Yas Marina, and you’ll get to see the city skyline and desert landscapes from a whole new perspective.

best places to visit in Abu Dhabi

Tours typically last for around 30 minutes, and tickets cost around 700 AED per person. You can book directly with   Seawings , or you can book through your hotel. The ticket price may be high for this one, but this is one of the best places to visit in Abu Dhabi, especially if you’re into photography and adventure.

And that brings us to the end of the best places to visit in Abu Dhabi! As one of the best places to visit in the UAE, this city definitely doesn’t disappoint and should be on your travel bucket list. From luxury experiences to natural adventures, there’s something for everyone in Abu Dhabi.
