Those 720s from the mid-80s certainly are great lookers and riders. Plus, whatever the new 720 is intended to do, the old 720 probably does better. I find it interesting that from about 1979 to 1986, Trek and almost every other manufacturer offered at least one fully-loaded touring bike in its lineup. But then they abandoned the genre altogether in 1987 or 1988. If you went into a bike shop and asked for a touring bike, if they didn't have leftover stock, they'd try to sell you a "hybrid" or convince you that you'd be better off on a mountain bike.

Yes, isn't that the truth! In fact, as I recall, road bikes of any kind were being pushed off the showroom floors in those days to make more room for mountain bikes -- many of which probably never left the pavement.

I hated the old 720's. They were way too flexible and couldn't handle a load. In fairness, I'm 6'3" and had the biggest frame they made and carried 50lbs. of gear, still though.. I loved riding it lightly loaded or unloaded but as a loaded touring bike not so much.

I bought a used 25" 720 way back when and found it way to flexible for loaded touring also. The larger sizes should have had stiffer tubing. I stepped down to a univega straight gauge touring bike and found it to be perfect. Many years later I have a Miyata 610 with center pulls and the aforementioned Dunapar derailleur and half step plus granny. That's my retrogrouch bike. I use a 87 Klein with a 21 speed indexed barends as my "modern" touring bike. It's a lot like the ST 1000.

I rode the trek 720 touring bicycle fully loaded across the United states in 1987. I had bought it new in 1985, I believe it was a leftover 84 model. It was a great ride and I still own the bike today. Time to rebuild it. I'd suggest this bike for touring to anyone who likes to go the distance.

Damn, now I want to go work on that old black and red lugged Trek I have sitting in the back room at the shop. Build some Camp wheels for it or sumthin', hmmmmm.... What would I choose? Old, all day long. I have litte love for the new Trek brand, the price is something that we as a nation, should be ashamed of. Thanks for the smidgen of Cannondale love there too. They were close to the last big US companies to shutter their US factories (what Trek's doing at this point could hardly be considered US production). Cannondale made a pretty impressive tourer back then, too, in their 1000 model, which came with everything a person needed, including fenders and C'dale's own racks. All one needed to do was get the C'dale bags, tent, and sleeping bags, and they were ready to take off cross country. The welds on those bikes were smoothed very nicely.

The new 720 isn't perfect, but walking into a shop and seeing 520s, 720s, 920s, and Specialized AWOLs is a sight better than seeing a row of slammed carbon fiber road bikes with 23mm tires.

Just looked at the Trek website, they are still selling a steel framed 520 tourer. Is is list priced at only $300 more than I paid for my 520 18 years ago, not bad. The Bontrager components don't look nearly as interesting as the Shimano 105/DX/Avid mix that was on the '98, but all of the original components are long gone...

You're right about the 520. I think I read somewhere that it is one of the longest running models still available today (they've offered the 520 since the early 80s -- so 30+ years?) - though very different from what they were back in the day. A fine bike, I'm sure, if someone wants a new bike that has a lot of versatility, and isn't hung up on nostalgia for lugs, Reynolds tubing, level top tubes, and shiny silver components.

My everyday bike is a 1984 Trek 830 Mountain bike with an Xtracycle bolted on. It's a very good frame. I can imagine the 720s were marvelous also. I have yet to see a contemporary production frame I would want, which I guess makes me retrogrouch, though I despise the term "retro." Is it retro if you never moved away from it?

I have one of those 1984 720's. It's my main commuter bike. I keep it in mint shape, but alas, the only original equipment on it is the frame, seat post, cantilever brakes and levers, Simplex front derailleur and saddle (Brooks Professional - lasts forever). The 27" wheels (indestructable Wolbers) have been replaced with 700C for tire selection. I have Schwalbe 700 x35 Marathon Supremes with VO fenders. It's a little tight but works, and the original brakes reach just fine. The original chainrings were a half-step, not a triple. I've swapped them for and old Ultegra set (still polished aluminum). Handlebars are VO Grand Randonneur, with the original gumby brake hoods and Brooks leather handle bar tape. It's truly a classic bike. The frame is in great shape and it rides like a dream on the wider tires.

Dawes still makes the Galaxy and Super Galaxy which I believe has been in production for over 300 years with only a break to allow the production line to be used to make Spam cans during the war. Maybe not though... You can even buy a Galaxy Classic with steel tubing, a HORIZONTAL toptube and a quill stem(!). It might even have an umbrella clip for all I know. It makes one wonder if there are more grumpy old bike geeks per capita over there than over here... Spindizzy

Yep - the Dawes is another long-running model. Not 300 years long (I get it - that's a typo) but longer even than the Trek 520. Can't remember the last time I saw a Dawes here in the U.S. though.

You are seriously off on the dates of the Dawes Galaxy. A still ride-able Galaxy (no lugs, just hammered together in a process archeologists call "cold welding") was found in one of the pyramids at Giza. New rubber, it was good to go.

After I graduated from college and got my first “real” job, I looked longingly at a Trek 720 but instead bought a 614. It was a great bike, and equipped with Blackburn low-riders on the front carrying Tailwind panniers and standard panniers on the back made a fast, stable touring machine. I eventually sold it (regrets, I have a few...), and still would love to have a 720 — an old one, that is.

It's not even a competition, in my mind, between the classic and the new version. Though I will say that I am happy with any effort for a new bike to marketed as anything other than race- or mtn- biking. Those old Trek 5xx,6xx,and 7xx series touring bikes are so nice. Actually any old Trek is pretty hard to beat. Wolf.

Ah, the 1980s hay day of touring cycles. I have a Gitane Tourer bought new in 1986; long chainstays and wheelbase, lots of room for 35mm tires with fenders. Rock steady handling with 55 lbs of camping gear on front and rear racks. It was fitted from new with the Huret Duopar Eco derailleur. I had heard they were short-lived so picked up a spare new one when they were being closed out. Sure enough, recently the rear shifting deteriorated. After getting the dropout hanger alignment checked, it was OK, I decided to install the 'spare' Duopar. That did it, back to fine shifting again. And to think, the original only lasted 30 years! Cheap French junk. I love my Gitane and my similar vintage Bertin Cyclocross bike.

The old Trek 720 was a POS. My frame broke after a lousy 20 or 30,000 miles :o) And at the worst possible time. Fortunately a bike shop in Fairbanks had a 520 frame that fit me in stock.

I ride a 1984 Trek 420 sport touring model that I bought new in Norfolk, Va. when I was in the Navy. It feels light weight and nimble in spite of its high tensile steel fork and stays. I have enjoyed it as a commuter bike and now as a daily respite from my stay-at-home existence during the pandemic.

More to the point, I bought the inexpensive 420 instead of the 720 because someone had just stolen my cherished Centurion, and I didn’t want to risk losing another expensive bike. I didn’t test ride the 720, but I suspect its handling is not as lively as the 420’s, or am I praising sour grapes?

My 60cm? (actually measured as 23.5") '83 trek 720 weighs in at 22.5 pounds... with midweight (32mm) tubular wheels. Lots of extra room for fenders or larger tires. If I take the rack off and put on my light wheels, it saves another pound... Best production bike I've ever seen, I do anything with it, I even brought home a steel, double kitchen sink on the back of it today. Wish I could post a picture of it here.

First Impressions: Trek 720 Disc Light Adventure Touring – Can Handle Fast Rides

For decades Trek has offered its model 520 steel touring model, specced with bar-end shifters, a rear rack, braze-on for fenders and low-rider front rack, and clearance for chubby tires to tackle any terrain. For 2015, two new models are joining it in Trek stores: the rugged 920 adventure bike and the lightweight 720, both made with aluminum frames and decidedly different than each other and their grandpappy, the 520.

The 720 Disc is indeed aimed at more of the mixed-use crowd—riders who spend most of their time behind bars on asphalt—but who enjoy a taste of speed with the ability to tackle a little gravel. The handlebar height is similar to my daily rider, which I use on fast lunch rides in the hills for fitness, and the frame’s geometry is more on the aggressive side, which suits me fine.

The Trek 720 Disc Light Adventure Touring

The gear – trek 720.

Trek, along with its house brand Bontrager, developed a plastic snap-in front lowrider dry-bag system for the carbon touring fork to carry some necessities. This frees up the rider’s back for a hydration pack for longer, hotter rides, or allows a pack-rat to carry as much stuff as they need. The rear triangle can also fit a standard rack, and Bontrager has several to choose from.

The 11-32-tooth, 11-speed cassette offers low enough gearing to handle long, steep climbs, and the 50/34 front chainrings allow a nice cadence on the flats, which I enjoy because I’m partial to doubles. I also like Shimano’s reliable 105 groups, and the 720 includes shift/brake levers, derailleurs, cassette, and chain, plus the RS500 crankset. Shifting has been crisp and reliable, and I need to tighten up the stretched cables a little to make things perfect after several rides.

The Ride – Trek 720

The 700x28c Bontrager AW1 Hard-Case Lite tires roll smoothly with 100 psi, and as of this post, I’ve not suffered any flats. I’ve ridden several hundred miles on Bontrager tires the past few years, and have grown to appreciate the connection I feel to the road, which gives me a bit more confidence when cornering.

I’ve also grown accustomed to looking down and seeing disc brakes on my drop-bar bikes, and the TRP HY/RD cable-actuated, hydraulic hybrid disc brakes have become my favorite since testing the Pivot Vault in 2014: squeeze the brake lever and speed is scrubbed with little effort.

Like the Ibis Hakkalügi Disc I repurposed last fall, the Bontrager wheels are wide, round, and true, even after several rides, providing a nice no-hassle ride. Unlike the ‘Lugi, the 720 Disc has fitting for fenders.

At 21 pounds without pedals and dry bags mounted on my 58 cm test sample, the 720 Disc won’t win any weight weenie contests, but that’s not the point. This is a bike designed to be loaded down, and smart bikes like this only feel better with extra stuff bolted or strapped on. Trek knows this from its tenure with the popular 520.

Thoughts on the  Trek 720

The 720 Disc can handle fast rides with the Lycra crowd, or become a mule on longer overnight excursions. The graphite finish with lime and green highlights provide enough of a neutral palette, and with a few simple modifications (like Cher’s costume changes between songs), you’ll have a diva of your own to go wherever you like.

Not only did Shimano redesign the FD-5800 front derailleur to increase the gear ratio range, but they also redesigned the pull arm, and spring mechanism, and lowered the trim position to prevent the chain from dropping.

These design upgrades have resulted in lighter action, and improved shifting accuracy, as well as the overall feel of the response. Until now, there has never been a front derailleur with 11 speeds that are so affordable.

Crankset, Crank, Bottom Bracket

The length of the crank depends on personal riding habits. A longer crank should be used if the legs have a significant amount of strength.

Cycling experts recommend using a shorter crank based on pedaling frequency. A 172.5mm or 175mm crank is most commonly used for daily riding.

Shimano Hollowtech II bottom brackets with BSA threads provide long-lasting performance and long life. With better sealing and rotation, the bottom bracket provides high riding efficiency.

The Shimano 105 chain is made of lightweight composite metal with an electroplated silver process for smooth transmission. The surface of the chain is rust-proof for better durability.

And after quenching treatment, the wear resistance is enhanced. When our testers checked out this bike the Trek Checkpoint ALR 5 was definitely a good looking bike so it’s been in the Trek line for quite some time now basically this bike is their performance version gravel car.

It’s worth mentioning that in the Trek lineup, they already have the Trek Domane, which is their enduro bike, but it still has quite a bit of off-road capability, with tire clearance up to 38c.

So to further improve off-road capability, Trek made the Checkpoint line, which comes with 40c tires, but you can even upgrade to the 700 wheel size with 45c tires.

This bike also has a slightly longer reach and a slightly lower stack than the Domane, so it puts you in a better position.

If you’re looking for a bike capable of gravel racing, the Trek Checkpoint ALR 5 is a great option, and it’s not so aggressive that you can’t do long road rides by swapping in some thinner tires.

Now on to the Trek Checkpoint ALR 5 bike. The ALR 5 is an aluminum frame. It has internal cable routing and the smooth welds make it look really nice.

The Trek Checkpoint ALR 5 uses what Trek calls Alpha 300 series aluminum.

The 300 series aluminum frame features a tapered head tube and 1-1/8” top headset.

The Trek Checkpoint ALR 5 also has a carbon fiber fork, so this will help remove some road vibrations, plus it has racks and fenders installed as well.

With the Trek Checkpoint ALR 5, you have the option of carrying a variety of gear.

The Trek Checkpoint ALR 5 has a top tube bag with frame bags, water bottle cages, and rear rack and fender mounts on the down tube.

The Trek Checkpoint ALR 5 has a sliding frame, which is where the axles go through the frame. It slides forward and backward, which allows you to adjust the geometry of the bike as you change tire size.

So for a smaller tire, you can tuck it forward to make the bike handle a little faster, or if you want it to be more stable, you can slip it back and fit the 45mm 700c wheel in the frame.

The ALR 5 is equipped with Shimano’s GRX 11-speed drivetrain.

It has a Shimano GRX RX 810 rear derailleur which is a clutched rear derailleur meaning when you open the clutch it will help keep the chain tension tighter so you don’t get noise or rattle when you walk on on the trail.

It runs up to a 34-tooth Cassette, which is exactly the 11-34-tooth range cassette that the bike comes with.

Then, the Trek Checkpoint ALR 5 uses a GRX RX 600 crankset, which will have a 46/30 chainring combination, which means it’s a tight cog.

But it makes sense, as this would allow the car to have good traction on loose and slippery climbs.

Since the tires are thicker and have a slightly larger outer diameter, you don’t need that tall gear.

On the handlebars, the Trek Checkpoint ALR 5 will still use 11-speed GRX Shifters.

Now Shifters are RX 600s, which means they will operate hydraulic dual-piston calipers, and they feel pretty good with a great lever fit.

The Hood size isn’t super large, which is a nice upgrade from Shimano’s newer 11-speed offering.

The inside button will get you into harder gears, while the entire lever will get you into easier gears.

Front and Rear Hubs and Handlebars

The front hub is a 100 x 12 mm thru-axle, and the rear hub of the Trek Checkpoint ALR 5 is a 142 x 12 mm Sliding Dropout, which moves the hub axle back and forth to support the chain.

By the way, I always feel that there is nothing to move the rear wheel position, it is unstable and not very reliable.

Moreover, moving the rear wheel will also affect the racks and fenders to varying degrees, and the brakes also need to be adjusted accordingly.

Disc brakes are more troublesome, and the calipers need to be moved.

Alright, back to the point, the cockpit uses the Bontrager Elite IsoZone handlebar, VR-CF shape, and the stem provides more speed.

Tests have shown that it can increase speed by 23 seconds per hour compared to a conventional round stem. The Trek Checkpoint ALR 5 reaches a new level of aerodynamics with aluminum profiles and internal wiring.

The variable radius, and compact camber (VR-CF) profile increases wrist clearance for a more ergonomic position. That means there is 93mm of distance from the handlebar to the shifter.

The Bontrager Elite IsoZone handlebar has a 123mm drop. It has a spot that allows you to mount an LED bicycle headlight or something.

I recommend choosing one of those computer-controlled cycling lights with built-in ambient lighting sensors.

This enables automatic brightness control. It’s better to have brackets, you can freely choose to install it on the handlebar or body, and it is easy to install.

Saddles and Tires

Speaking of the saddle, this is a Bontrager Montrose saddle, the P3 version of the steel rails, mounted on an aluminum 2072 seatpost.

Bontrager GR1 Comp tires, 700×40c width, so they are wide tires, unfortunately, they are not tubeless, but luckily you can upgrade these tires because the rims on the Trek Checkpoint ALR 5 are Bontrager tubeless, with 28 holes.

You can go tubeless on the wheels, so all you need is a new set of tires, some sealant, and valving, and you can upgrade this bike.

It can only be paired with Canyon’s own fenders, and it’s like the go-to of any drop-bar bike with no flaws.

The Canyon Grail 7 has a traditional handlebar, but Canyon is smart and they put compliance in this car for comfortable and fast off-roading.

So, what did Canyon do to Grail? They have taken the best elements, bringing in a lot from bikes like indoor racing. So what we end up with is a bike with geometry that’s slightly smoother than a road bike, so it’s really stable when you’re off-road.

It has great extra tire clearance, the aluminum frame is really super thin and tough, and then you can use some house brand components.

Canyon Grail 7 uses Canyon FK0070 CF Disc. This fork has a wide shape and it has plenty of tire clearance or plenty of mud clearance.

The slightly curved design and the way they use carbon fiber means the Canyon Grail 7 has a slightly sportier character.

If you hit a pothole, it’s a smooth ride through that kind of bump, because the fork works so well with the oversized tires.

As is usual with Canyon, they built a lot of value for money into this car — you’ll have really good components.

Great looking fun to ride and can go any where

I think oldest son took it jumping on trails years ago when he borrowed it, There seems to be a wobble in the steering.

I just rode the bike today and it is as fun as ever. I am currently looking for a new Trek probably getting the FX 7.4. I am going to let my youngest son have (now I say use) this one. It still looks great and i love the green color. Todays bikes are sadly lacking in that area. I have ridden roads along railroad tracks and dirt trails. This bike has held up wonderfully. I still love it.

Nice rigid frame, twist shift still works fine after 18 years. No problem with gear jumping or shifting. Great value for the money.

Rather basic, no suspension, but suspensions weren't as common in 94 as they are today.

I have had the bicycle since 1998 and it is a joy to ride. I am 6'3, so it's hard to find a bike that "fits" for lack of a better term. The way the bike is built allows me to nearly sit up which avoids back pain while riding. My trips generally average 10-20 miles.

Compared to what?

After usng a Raleigh hybrid during bike tour in the west of Ireland, I bought this bike new in the fall of 99 for $375 as soon as I got back. Thought that was an insane amount to spend on a bicycle! 12 years later wouldn't trade it for any other. Love my Trekkie!. Just spent $160 for an overhaul from the same place I bought it 12 years ago and it's like new again. Perfect bike for me and everyone who rides it, loves it. Nuff said.

Cheap clunks from department stores

Good for what it is a hybrid. Shifting on the front dereullirs (spelling) was problematic.

I love this bike. I took it as a touring bike when I rode down from San Francisco and Los Angeles. Took it on dirt trails. Despit all that, it still works well despite my lack of care for it. However, despite never professionally tuned it lasted me well for 4 years before sorta coming to it's end these past few years. Frames still holding up after a few crashes and the wear and tell of a road trip.

None. I'm not a racer and so far my longest road trip has been 33 miles. The only review I need is how the bike performs for me, not the dislikes someone else has about it.

I came across the Trek 720 by accident. I frequent pawn shops for diamonds in the rough. Knowing the Trek name, I knew this bike had potential. It is in excellent shape and I pretty much stole it at the price I paid. This bike will be my conditioning bike because I mainly mountain bike.

This bike was purchased to replace my 20+ year old "10 speed". I ride 20-25 miles at a pop on sometimes challenging/ hilly terrain, all road use not off road. I love the bike. It is comfortable, reliable and aside from routine maintenance, I haven't adjusted the derailluers in 4 years and they still work flawlessly. Not bad for a bike under 400 bucks.

Hey, I'm not one of these maniacs who owns two bikes each worth more than my car. I like to ride, I do in-city and dirt trail riding in the Front Range of the Rockies, maybe 6 hours a week. All I can say about my Trek 720 is that it's affordable, and very good quality. I'm not sure why there are other hybrid bikes in the Trek line for twice the price - they are said to have better components and more serious engineering and other vaguely-stated qualities - but this one is terrific for me. The thing that's great about it is that unlike most mountain bikes, which I find dreadfully uncomfortable because I feel like I'm hunched forward like Quasimodo for hours on end, I can sit up almost straight in this one. All the components have worked great so far - I love it! If you're like me, and you want a comfortable ride plus the flexibility of mountain and paved trails, get a hybrid, and consider this Trek!

I own a 720 which is 4 years old. The wheel spokes are corroding and have developed serious rust. According to Treks specifications, the spokes are stainless. Other chrome components are rusting also. The bike is kept in the garage, so I am surprised at all of the rust. The brakes have a component which fails frequently and has to be replaced every 400 to 500 miles. I emailed Trek 4 times and even sent them a snail mail. They have not responded. For reliability and Trek's lackluster customer attitude, I would give this product 1 star. (Note that I have a friend who owns a 700 and is having the same problems.)

This is a great commuter bike. Comfortable ride, gears for climbing walls, sensible component mix, reasonably cheap.

Don't let the "hybrid" name fool you; you can't take this bike offroad. I've tried. It hurt. A lot. The suspension seatpost is useless (but I think that of all suspension seatposts). Chicks don't dig it.

If this were a car, it'd be a Golf; it tries to pretend like it's cool, but it's really just practical. Since that's exactly what I want, I'm giving it a high rating. If you're an elite hardcore singletrack freak or somebody with any ambitions at racing, you'll hate it.

Choosing the right tire for your electric bike has a great impact on how your e-bike performs. The speed of the electric bicycle, the range of distance covered, the maneuverability on different terrains, and the suspension are affected by the different types of you decide to fix on to your ebike .

Making the right decision on the tires is more crucial on an e-bike than compared to an electric bicycle as you spend more time riding through at high speeds .

There are mainly two types of tires, Fat tires and Thin tires. The differences between both are many: size, width, pressure limits, weight, and cost.

You need to know the type of terrain you deal with when you take your ebike out. It can be the roadside, pavements or off-roading. Try and analyze what surface do your tires use the most. If you travel on hard tar surfaces or Asphalt, you should use thin, smoother threaded commuter style tires as they provide excellent grip and provide good handling.

Thin tires on e-bikes are meant for speed and have various advantages over thicker tires, especially if you like to race on an open road. Skinny tires are designed to have higher rolling rates compared to fat tires. Hence you can achieve high speeds that give you the edge you need while racing.

●You can break harder while using Fat tires as there are no potential slips or the chance of losing your balance and falling.

●Fat tires tend to cost more as they're made on a custom basis and can be seasonal. The main reason they cost more is that more rubber is used and they are not available freely everywhere.

●Fat tires increase the overall weight of the electric bike, making it heavier than traditional eBikes with thin tires. The suspension must be robust and large enough to handle the Fat tires while riding on uneven terrain.

●The rubber on the tires tends to go to waste if not utilized appropriately. The sides of the tires tend not to get used often, and these cause something called "chicken strips". This hampers the overall life of the tires, and as a rider, you'd lose stability if the tires are not utilized thoroughly.

Thin tires have shown promise with day to day regular commutes. On asphalt, skinny tires tend not to flatten much and are a primary reason cyclists who take part in races or regularly commuting to places within the city prefer thin tires on their cycles or e-bikes.

How To Remove And Reinstall The Rear Wheel On Your E-Bike

When it comes to rear hub motor e-bikes such as our Magnum models, you might find the idea of removing your rear wheel a bit intimidating. How do you navigate around the chain? The brakes? The motor cable? And while there is a lot to consider, we bet it’s a lot simpler than you think.

In this post, we’ll explain the steps for removing your rear wheel so you can confidently do it at home. That said, don't be a hero — if you’re ever in doubt or confused about your wheel or any other maintenance on your bike, just take it to your local e-bike dealer or repair shop.

Safety Warning: If you are unclear about any of the information described in your e-bike manual, this article, or the video linked at the end of this article, please make an appointment with a Magnum dealer to service your bike. Improper wheel installation can result in serious injury or death.

When Should I Remove My Rear Wheel?

The main reason to remove your e-bike’s rear wheel is to replace the tube or tire. You would usually do that as a result of damage, but you can also change out your e-bike tire to suit your terrain. A change in tires can help riders transition from urban and light trail riding to adventurous or rugged off-roading. Make sure to only use quality tires designed for your e-bike’s wheel size and model!

To change your tire, simply:

  • Turn your battery power off or remove the battery entirely from your e-bike
  • Disconnect the motor cable quick connector
  • Change the flat tire as you would a regular bike
  • Reconnect the motor plug, matching up the arrows on the cable connectors

You might also find yourself needing to replace the whole wheel. This would only be due to irreparable damage, which could be caused by impact or by incorrect maintenance or installation (improper truing, bolt/nut tightening, or spoke tension ). 

Is The Rear Wheel Removal Process The Same On All E-Bikes?

Not a Magnum E-Bike owner? Not a problem. The steps we outline here should work for any rear hub motor e-bike, so if that describes your bike, this guide should be helpful for you. When in doubt, though, consult your manual or take your bike to your local e-bike dealer or repair shop.

Equipment You Will Need

  • Bolt and axle nut sizes will vary across models. Be sure to choose the tools that match your unique bike.
  • Allen wrench(es) that match your retainer bolt and derailleur guard bolt size (ex. 4mm wrench) 
  • Adjustable open-end wrench, or open-end wrench(es) that match your axle nut size (ex. 18mm and 19mm)
  • Small cable clippers

Removing Your E-Bike’s Rear Wheel

There are many steps to removing the rear wheel, but don’t be intimidated. We’ll walk through it step by step.

Step 1: Shift Into Highest Gear  

Before we get started, take your e-bike on a quick ride and shift it into your highest gear. You can be sure you’re there when you look at the freewheel: your chain will be on the smallest physical gear.

Step 2: Remove Retainer Bolt

Once you’ve shifted your e-bike into its highest gear, flip it over — or place it on a bike stand, if you have one. 

Next, make sure you’re looking at the rotor side of your rear wheel, not the chain side.

Now find your retainer bolt. Loosen that bolt with your Allen wrench. This will loosen the fender wire too, but that’s okay. Remove the bolt and set it aside.

Step 3: Remove Rear Derailleur Guard

Step to the other side of your bike, so you’re now facing the chain, rear derailleur, etc. Double-check again that you’re in that high gear: the smallest physical gear. 

Locate the 2 bolts holding your rear derailleur onto your frame; remove both of them and set them aside. Now you can remove the rear derailleur guard; keep that with the bolts.

Step 4: Unplug Motor Cable

Find the motor cable, which runs from your rear wheel axle up to a plug near the rim of your wheel. Then locate the zip tie that’s holding the motor cable in place.

Step 5: Remove Axle Nuts

Remove the motor cable hub from the wheel axle and make sure all your cables are out of the way. Now grab your open-end wrench(es). 

Start by loosening the axle nut on the side of the bike that you’re already on (the gear side). You may need to turn it quite a few times, so once it begins to loosen, speed things up by using your hands instead of the wrench. Once removed, set the axle nut aside.

Then, go back to the side of the bike where you started (facing your rotor) and do the same. Note that the nuts may each be different sizes, so you may need 2 different sized wrenches, or that adjustable wrench. 

Step 6: Remove The Wheel

Once your axle nuts are removed, press the cage of the derailleur forward (toward the bike frame). As you’re pressing and holding the derailleur with your thumb, use your other hand to guide the wheel off of the frame. Take your time, being careful of the cables and chain.

Locating And Understanding Your Anti-Turn Washer s

As you prepare to reinstall your wheel, make a special note of the washers holding your freewheel and disc brake in place on either side of the wheel’s axle. Those are called anti-turn washers, and they’re the only washers that sit inside the frame when your wheel is in place. You want them to be as close to the motor as possible.

If you have any hesitation about how to properly reinstall your Magnum e-bike wheel, please consult your local Magnum dealer or repair shop.

Reinstalling Your E-Bike’s Rear Wheel

Good news — now things get a little easier! Removing your rear wheel is the hard part. Reinstalling is a bit finicky, but overall simpler. Just take your time.

As you guide your wheel into the frame, tuck your motor cable and wheel axle in through the center of your chain loop. Lift your rear derailleur. Hook the chain back onto the freewheel. On the other side, check that your rotor is where it should be as you move things into place. 

Now is a good time to check on those anti-turn washers as well — and make sure they’re sitting inside the frame.

As you check the mechanisms, spin the wheel gently backward (clockwise if you’re facing the chain side; counterclockwise if you’re facing the rotor). You’ll both see and feel the wheel lock into place. 

Now replace and tighten the axle nuts. Start with your hands again, and just use the open-end wrench for the final few turns. 

Then replace the retainer bolt that holds the fender wire to the wheel. Next, reattach the derailleur guard and tighten those 2 bolts holding it in place. 

We’re almost there! Now reconnect the motor cable by reinserting the plug; make sure the arrows on the motor cable line up. You can then install a new zip tie to secure the motor cable to the frame, and you’re done.

What About My Front Wheel?

Removing the front wheel can make it easier to transport your e-bike in a personal vehicle. You may also need to remove it if you need to replace a tube, tire, or the wheel itself.

Since your rear wheel is the one hooked up to the motor and chain, removing your front wheel is much simpler!

Magnum Pathfinder models as well as the Peak T5 and Peak T7 necessitate the use of an Allen wrench, but all other Magnums feature a quick release, making front-wheel removal a breeze. Just unfasten the quick-release lever and pull the wheel out!

To replace it, it’s helpful to have a partner to provide an extra set of hands. This ensures that the wheel sits properly in the fork and that the disc rotor slides up between the brake pads. If you’re by yourself, just move slowly and keep an eye on both sides of the wheel and axle as you guide the front wheel and disc rotor back in.

Top Tips To Care For Your E-Bike Wheels And Tires

With proper care, your wheels will take you far! While you should check every part of your bike regularly (see your manual for more info), here are the wheel and tire maintenance habits you need for e-bike safety.

Check tire pressure along with tire and rim condition. Check this before every ride; from debris to rough terrain, many things can change the condition of your tires or rims on any given ride.

Inspect wheel quick releases. Make sure all quick releases are tightened and secure. These hold your wheel securely to the frame, so they’re essential for a safe ride.

Check spoke tension. Broken spokes compromise the balance and integrity of your wheel, which can lead to major accidents. Grab each spoke pair (the 2 spokes that cross each other diagonally along the radius of your wheel) on each side of both wheels. If any spokes feel tighter or looser than the rest, don’t ride — take your bike in for service.

Check for wheel trueness. Grab one end of your frame and lift your e-bike off the ground. Look at your wheel from the top down and spin it. If you see any wobbling from side to side, your wheel might be out of true, making it unsafe to ride. Take your bike in for service.
