• Polo wraps – A polo wrap is a fleece bandage that can be used for a variety of reasons. Some riders will use them to protect a horse’s legs while jumping or racing, while others will use polo wraps over an injury to hold a bandage in place.
• Standing wraps – Standing wraps will provide protection and support for a horse’s legs. They consist of a white cloth wrap that is usually followed by a polo wrap or standing bandage. Many people will use standing wraps on their horse’s legs after a hard ride or following an injury, as it will support the leg while preventing fluid buildup.

This is dependent on your individual situation and your horse. In general, wrapping a horse’s legs for trailering is a good idea. It provides that extra layer of protection while they are in the trailer.

Horse travel boots: what to look for, six on the market, plus six more we’ve put to the test

Horses have delicate legs, and one way to protect them is by using horse boots . There are many different types and styles available on the market, including travel boots, which are ideal to keep your horse’s legs safe whilst travelling. The vehicles we transport our horses in are quite confined spaces, particularly if multiple horses are occupying the space, so it’s not unusual for them to get knocked or nicked. Whether you take your horse out regularly to compete or more sporadically for days out, or travel in a trailer or horsebox, investing in a pair of travel boots will reduce the risk of your horse unloading with an injury.

Travel boots differ from other types as they are much longer, covering the entirety of the lower limb. Front boots protect knee to hoof, and hind boots protect hock to hoof, ensuring there is limited exposure for any knocks, cuts or abrasions to be sustained whilst in transit. As they do such an important job, there are a few things to consider when purchasing a pair…

1. Size and fit

It’s key that these boots are fitted correctly, as many are anatomically designed to fit the horse’s limb structure. Too small and the boot will rub or not be the appropriate length, too big and it could come loose whilst the horse is being transported.

When looking for travel boots, check if the manufacturer has made any claims about whether the boot is designed for certain heights or breeds of horse. For example, there are companies which design boots for draft breeds, which typically have more canon bone and feathers, and therefore need a wider boot.

2. Materials and fabrics

Travel boots are typically made from durable materials such as neoprene, polyester or nylon, and may have fleece linings for comfort. For horses that fidget or are prone to overreaching, choose a boot with a higher denier or ripstop fabric – this will reduce the likelihood of the boots ripping or becoming damaged.

3. Level of protection

Keep in mind the thickness of the boots and factor in your average journey time when selecting a pair of travel boots. Thicker boots offer more protection, but could heat up your horse’s legs; excessive prolonged heat can contribute to tendon and ligament degradation.

More companies are designing travel boots with breathable fabrics to combat this, however, so keep this is mind if you plan to travel your horse for long distances.

4. Desensitise your horse to wearing them

As they are highly padded and designed to be worn whilst the horse is stationary in a trailer or horsebox, traditional travel boots are tall and quite rigid and therefore horses can struggle to walk in them the first few times they try them on. Before you try to load and transport your horse in the boots, pop them on a few times and let your horse get used to the feel of them. To begin with, your horse might take big steps with their hindlimbs in particular – just walk them slowly until they become accustomed to them, and take them off.

It can be tempting, if you horse doesn’t enjoy wearing them, to put them on once the horse has been loaded. However, trailers and horseboxes are confined spaces, especially when partitions are put into place, so we do not advise that you attempt to do this.

‘It’s better to be safe than sorry’

I don’t often transport my horses, as I don’t regularly compete or attend clinics, but I’ve had a few different horses over the years and each of their requirements have differed when it comes to successful travelling. My old mare, Aly, was a thin-skinned thoroughbred and regularly ended up with nicks and grazes that were particularly long-healing on her lower limbs. She wasn’t the biggest fan of wearing travel boots – she always did a silly walk for the first five minutes of wearing them – but I was concerned that she could injure herself in the trailer as she wasn’t the best traveller, so I persevered with her travelling in boots. It took a few attempts with different brands to get it right, however, as she had quite delicate and slim legs, so some makes just wouldn’t fasten up tight enough and eventually slide off – often helped with a stomp or kick from Aly!

There have been occasions where I’ve opted not to use travel boots. I think certain horses travel better without them as they can irritate them. For short journeys, my sport horse Romeo has always loaded and travelled like a saint, so I prefer to pop on his brushing boots and overreach boots instead. He could also be a bit excitable to unload at the other end, especially in a buzzy competition atmosphere, so not having to try to get big boots off was one less thing to worry about! But for longer journeys, where I know he can become a little impatient, I’ll put them on for my peace of mind in case he has a bit of a fidget. They’re also great for keeping his white legs clean!

When it comes to travel boots, I do think it’s better to be safe than sorry, but you have to weigh up each individual. If your horse is prone to fidgeting or moving about a lot during travel, I’d definitely say it’s worth popping them on.

The traditional way to protect your horse’s legs while transporting is to use a set of oversized no bow wraps or pillow wraps + a standing bandage. Collectively known as a shipping wrap, this combination of cotton and foam is quite useful if you know how to put them on. Consequently, the downside is the time involved to put on and take off. Shipping bandages are also not quite as easy to clean up. As for protection, shipping wraps and shipping boots provide nearly the same amount of protection. Some would argue that the shipping bandages provide more support, while the shipping boots provide more impact protection and overall coverage.

Professional Horse Transport

While important, getting a good pair of travel boots for horses is just the beginning. If your plan is a long haul to a show, hiring a professional hauler might be necessary. White City and Boulevard Ring in Moscow

If you already had your Red Square tour and looking for non-touristy Moscow, off the beaten path and local gems of Moscow, then it’s time for “the Third Circle” or Boulevard Ring in Moscow. Let’s leave Kremlin and Kitay Gorod fortresses and head to more local, authentic part of Moscow – the White City.

What is White City?

The White City of Moscow was a historical area between the walls of the Kremlin & Kitay Gorod and the third defensive ring which was situated at the site of the modern Boulevard Ring.

It was the third fortification of Moscow after Kremlin and Kitay Gorod, and included areas such as Zaneglimene, Kuchkovo field and Kulishki.

Origin of the name White City

One version of the origin of the name “White City” is that those nobles didn’t pay any land taxes, so their lands were called “white”, in contrast to the “black” lands of artisans and merchants.

Another version is more prosaic: the walls of the White City were built of limestone.

White City had some other names: Tsarev City or Tsar-Grad (City of the Tsar). It was where the nobility and court officials settled, and the tsar often visited this neighborhood.

History of the White City of Moscow

In the 15 th century the territory of the White City was full of blooming gardens, and that gave the name to Starosadsky (Old Gardens) lane.

Till the middle of the XVI century the line of the Boulevard Ring was an earthen embankment, covered with turf and ground for greater strength and constructed as a fortification to protect the city from the raids.

However, the defensive structure did a bad job of protecting citizens. In 1571 wooden buildings were completely burned after the raid of Davlet Giray.

Beautiful start

During the reign of Tsar Fedor Ioanovich it was decided to put the stone walls, and in 1585 the first work began here.

The building was called the “White City” because “City” at the time was the name for the settlement itself.

Not yet completed, the new frontier helped to prevent an attack on Moscow. This happened in 1591, when troops of the Crimean Horde with the Khan Kazi Giray did not dare to storm the formidable wall and had to retreat.

The construction work was completed by 1593.

The White City was not only an important defensive (one of the most powerful and reliable in Europe), but also an architectural masterpiece, which decorated ancient Moscow.

The wall of the White City had 27 towers, ten of which had the gates at the intersections with the streets: Trehsvyatskie, Chertolskaya (Prechistenskie) Arbat, Nikita, Tver, Peter Sretensky, Myasnitskaya, Pokrovsky, Yauzskie and Vasilevsky. The total length of the walls of the White City was 10 kilometers with the height  of 10 meters and the width of 4-6 meters.

Tragic turn

During the Time of Troubles the fortification was severely damaged, and by the middle of the XVIII century it completely lost its defensive significance: the gate was no longer guarded and was not locked at night.

Muscovites  started taking away the bricks of the walls for their needs, and in 1760 the authorities allowed to use the materials for urban buildings. The house of Governor-General of Moscow on Tverskaya Street (the present building of the Moscow City Hall) was built exactly from the materials of the White City fortification.

No happy ending

In June 1774 it was decided to completely dismantle the walls of the White City.

Noticeably dilapidated structure gradually began to disassemble, and in its place were planted alleys as had long been fashionable in Europe. Funny enough – the word “boulevard” in a literal translation from French means “fortification”.

It was time for the White City to give way to the Boulevard Ring.

Boulevard Ring is a continuous chain of squares and boulevards in the city center. But actually, it does not physically form a closed circle.

Boulevards of Moscow

The famous Boulevard Ring is formed by ten boulevards and is shaped like a horseshoe leading to the embankment of the Moscow River.

The first Moscow boulevard was Tverskoy, which became the founder of the Boulevard Ring in 1796. Tverskoy boulevard is also the longest of all the streets that make up the Boulevard Ring – it stretches for 857 meters. The widest of these boulevards is Strastnoy, or “Holy” in English (123 meters), the shortest was Sretensky, or “Candlemas” (214 meters), and the youngest – Pokrovsky Boulevard, which appeared in Moscow in 1891, almost one hundred years after the first one.

History of the Boulevard Ring of Moscow

In 1880 Boulevard Ring got its first tram route – the legendary “A”, which is called “Annushka”. Nowadays “Anna” covers all the Ring in about an hour.

Boulevard Ring survived the barricades of 1901 and 1905, and the revolution of 1917. During the years of the Great Patriotic war – WWII –   the Boulevard turned into its former defensive role and got occupied with anti-aircraft guns and air defense balloons.

Immediately after the war boulevards again became a favorite place for walking.  4000 trees and 130,000 shrubs were planted along the Boulevard Ring. To celebrate the 800th anniversary of Moscow, the Ring was adorned with a new patterned iron barrier and wooden sofas. In 1978, the Boulevard Ring was declared a monument of landscape art, and has been constantly improved since then.

If you stroll through this historic boulevards of Moscow, you will see a lot of interesting, original, very local places and buildings that would never discover on a typical Moscow tour or read in a typical guide book.

In the old days Tverskoy Boulevard was a favorite walking place of aristocrats and the ordinary people were not allowed to walk here. Tverskoy preserved the 19th-century mansion, where lived outstanding personalities of a bygone era: Alexander Pushkin, Alexander Griboedov, Alexander Herzen, Nickolay Ogarev and others. Bulgakov included a lot of places from Tverskoy Boulevard in his novel ” Master and Margarita.” Here are also located the mansions of professor Nickolay Sklifosovsky and prominent Russian actress Maria Yermolova.

No less interesting is the history and architecture of yet another boulevard of Moscow – Gogolevsky Boulevard. Almost every building on Gogolevsky Boulevard  is a monument of architecture that keeps the memory of many famous figures of the past. For example, the building of the current Chess Club once was the center of musical life in Moscow, where you could meet Feodor Chaliapin, Sergey Rachmaninoff, Alexander Glazunov.

Every boulevard has its own manners

Leo Tolstoy shared his memories of different culture and nature of Moscow boulevards. Thus, on Prechistensky Boulevard he could feel free, relax, talk Russian and call his sister simply “Masha” (typical Russian name). On Nikitsky boulevard he used French, demonstrated refined manners, and his sister had the name “Marie”. Finally, on Tverskoy boulevard he used to prim, stood on ceremony with accented stiffness, spoke English and called his sister “Mary.”

In 1845 Vissarion Belinsky called Boulevard zone of Moscow “the best jewelry that St Petersburg has every right to be jealous of”.

During the 20th century Moscow got 20 new boulevards, located outside the Ring, which is residential area, and where tourists give way to locals.

Did New Jersey just have an earthquake? Yes, in Hunterdon County. Aftershocks continue.

If you felt that, you're not alone.

A 4.8-magnitude earthquake shook up the region shortly before 10:30 a.m. Friday, followed by two aftershocks of magnitude 2 at 11:20 a.m. and magnitude 2.2 at 1:32 p.m.

Where was the earthquake?

The epicenter of the earthquake was in Whitehouse Station, Hunterdon County, at 10:23 a.m.

The earthquake was 4.77 kilometers north northeast of White House Station and the depth was five kilometers. People felt the rumble from Maine to Norfolk, Virginia, officials said.

Will there be aftershocks?

Two aftershocks of magnitude 2 and magnitude 2.2 have struck since the quake, according to the United States Geological Survey. There is a small chance of an aftershock of 4.8-magnitude or greater, said Paul Earle of the United States Geological Survey.

This quake was felt by millions, Earle said, adding that East Coast quakes travel five times farther than West Coast quakes, because the rock here is harder.

When was the last earthquake in New Jersey?

The last earthquake in the Garden State was on March 15, measuring magnitude 2.2 struck near Whitehouse Station in Hunterdon County about 3 p.m., according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

The earthquake occurred at a depth of 8.7 kilometers, the survey said.

Prior to March 15, the last earthquake in New Jersey was a 1.7-magnitude that occurred near the Lake Telemark section of Roxbury Township in Morris County in August 2022, according to the survey.

There have also been earthquakes at the Jersey Shore: a 2.2-magnitude at Tuckerton in June 2021; a 3.1-magnitude near Marlboro in September 2020; and a 1.4-magnitude that occurred near Keansburg in August 2017.

What was the strongest earthquake at Jersey Shore?

One of the strongest earthquakes at the Jersey Shore was a magnitude 3.8 quake that struck near Freehold on January 30, 1979.

“Objects were shaken from shelves and minor cracks were reported in masonry walls in a few towns near the epicenter” during that quake, according to the Northeast States Emergency Consortium.

Earthquakes of less than a magnitude 3 are considered weak quakes with little noticeable shaking, according to the California Earthquake Authority.

South River homes shake, branches knock, alarms triggered

In South River, the start of rumbling was accompanied by small knick-knacks and toys falling from shelves. 

While at first it seemed likely that a truck or construction vehicle was headed down the street, it soon became apparent that something else was at play.

The house continued to shake for 20 to 30 seconds, as the rumbling noises continued, branches knocked against the walls, roof and windows, clanging noises were heard from a metal chimney pipe and a glass break security alarm was triggered. 

The power remained on, and there was no apparent damage at an electrical substation on Southside Avenue nor at a neighborhood park on the street.

Loud rumbling, shaking in Milltown 

In Milltown, about 30 miles from the earthquake’s epicenter, a loud rumbling noise accompanied shaking on Herbert Avenue in Milltown. A songbook fell off a piano inside one house.

Neighbors ran out of their homes and stood on lawns and porches asking each other what had just happened.

“It felt like my house was going to fall down,” said one resident. Another wondered if a residential construction project might have collapsed and caused the rumbling.

No visible damage was apparent on the block.

Napoleon enters Moscow

One week after winning a bloody victory over the Russian army at the Battle of Borodino, Napoleon Bonaparte ’s Grande Armée enters the city of Moscow, only to find the population evacuated and the Russian army retreated again. Moscow was the goal of the invasion, but the deserted city held no czarist officials to sue for peace and no great stores of food or supplies to reward the French soldiers for their long march. Then, just after midnight, fires broke out across the city, apparently set by Russian patriots, leaving Napoleon’s massive army with no means to survive the coming Russian winter.

In 1812, French Emperor Napoleon I was still at the height of his fortunes. The Peninsular War against Britain was a thorn in the side of his great European empire, but he was confident that his generals would soon triumph in Spain. All that remained to complete his “Continental System”–a unilateral European blockade designed to economically isolate Britain and force its subjugation–was the cooperation of Russia. After earlier conflict, Napoleon and Alexander I kept a tenuous peace, but the Russian czar was unwilling to submit to the Continental System, which was ruinous to the Russian economy. To intimidate Alexander, Napoleon massed his forces in Poland in the spring of 1812, but still the czar resisted.

On June 24, Napoleon ordered his Grande Armée, the largest European military force ever assembled to that date, into Russia. The enormous army featured more than 500,000 soldiers and staff and included contingents from Prussia, Austria, and other countries under the sway of the French empire. Napoleon’s military successes lay in his ability to move his armies rapidly and strike quickly, but in the opening months of his Russian invasion he was forced to be content with a Russian army in perpetual retreat. The fleeing Russian forces adopted a “scorched earth” strategy, seizing or burning any supplies that the French might pillage from the countryside. Meanwhile, Napoleon’s supply lines became overextended as he advanced deeper and deeper into the Russian expanse.

Many in the czarist government were critical of the Russian army’s refusal to engage Napoleon in a direct confrontation. Under public pressure, Alexander named General Mikhail Kutuzov supreme commander in August, but the veteran of earlier defeats against Napoleon continued the retreat. Finally, Kutuzov agreed to halt at the town of Borodino, about 70 miles west of Moscow, and engage the French. The Russians built fortifications, and on September 7 the Grande Armée attacked. Napoleon was uncharacteristically cautious that day; he didn’t try to outflank the Russians, and he declined to send much-needed reinforcements into the fray. The result was a bloody and narrow victory and another retreat by the Russian army.

Although disturbed by the progress of the campaign, Napoleon was sure that once Moscow was taken Alexander would be forced to capitulate. On September 14, the French entered a deserted Moscow. All but a few thousand of the city’s 275,000 people were gone. Napoleon retired to a house on the outskirts of the city for the night, but two hours after midnight he was informed that a fire had broken out in the city. He went to the Kremlin, where he watched the flames continue to grow. Strange reports began to come in telling of Russians starting the fires and stoking the flames. Suddenly a fire broke out within the Kremlin, apparently set by a Russian military policeman who was immediately executed. With the firestorm spreading, Napoleon and his entourage were forced to flee down burning streets to Moscow’s outskirts and narrowly avoided being asphyxiated. When the flames died down three days later, more than two-thirds of the city was destroyed.

In the aftermath of the calamity, Napoleon still hoped Alexander would ask for peace. In a letter to the czar he wrote: “My lord Brother. Beautiful, magical Moscow exists no more. How could you consign to destruction the loveliest city in the world, a city that has taken hundreds of years to build?” The fire was allegedly set on the orders of Moscow Governor-General Feodor Rostopchin; though Rostopchin later denied the charge. Alexander said the burning of Moscow “illuminated his soul,” and he refused to negotiate with Napoleon.

After waiting a month for a surrender that never came, Napoleon was forced to lead his starving army out of the ruined city. Suddenly, Kutuzov’s army appeared and gave battle on October 19 at Maloyaroslavets. The disintegrating Grande Armée was forced to abandon the fertile, southern route by which it hoped to retreat and proceed back along the ravaged path over which it had originally advanced. During the disastrous retreat, Napoleon’s army suffered continual harassment from the merciless Russian army. Stalked by hunger, subzero temperatures, and the deadly lances of the Cossacks, the decimated army reached the Berezina River late in November, near the border with French-occupied Lithuania. However, the river was unexpectedly thawed, and the Russians had destroyed the bridges at Borisov.

Napoleon’s engineers managed to construct two makeshift bridges at Studienka, and on November 26 the bulk of his army began to cross the river. On November 29, the Russians pressed from the east, and the French were forced to burn the bridges, leaving some 10,000 stragglers on the other side. The Russians largely abandoned their pursuit after that point, but thousands of French troops continued to succumb to hunger, exhaustion, and the cold. In December, Napoleon abandoned what remained of his army and raced back to Paris, where people were saying he had died and a general had led an unsuccessful coup. He traveled incognito across Europe with a few cohorts and reached the capital of his empire on December 18. Six days later, the Grande Armée finally escaped Russia, having suffered a loss of more than 400,000 men during the disastrous invasion.

With Europe emboldened by his catastrophic failure in Russia, an allied force rose up to defeat Napoleon in 1814. Exiled to the island of Elba, he escaped to France in early 1815 and raised a new army that enjoyed fleeting success before its crushing defeat at Waterloo in June 1815. Napoleon was then exiled to the remote island of Saint Helena, where he died six years later.
