The Christmas story begins with an angel's visit to Earth. In the Bible, the encounter between the Archangel Gabriel and Mary , known as the Annunciation, was when God's archangel of revelation announced to a faithful teenage girl that God has chosen her to give birth to a baby destined to save the world—Jesus Christ.

Mother of the World's Savior

Mary devoutly practiced her Jewish faith and loved God, but had no idea of the grand plans God had for her life until God sent Gabriel to visit her one day. He also delivered some incredibly startling news: God had chosen Mary to serve as the mother of the world's savior.

Mary wondered how that could be since she was still a virgin. But after Gabriel explained God's plan, Mary showed her love for God by agreeing to serve him. This event has become known in history as the Annunciation, which means "the announcement."

The Bible records in Luke 1:26-29:

"In the sixth month of Elizabeth’s pregnancy, God sent the angel Gabriel to Nazareth, a town in Galilee, to a virgin pledged to be married to a man named Joseph, a descendant of King David. The virgin’s name was Mary. The angel went to her and said, 'Greetings, you who are highly favored! The Lord is with you.' Mary was greatly troubled at his words and wondered what kind of greeting this might be.'

Mary was a poor girl who lived a simple life, so she probably wasn't used to being greeted the way Gabriel greeted her. And for anyone, it would be troubling to have an angel from heaven suddenly appear and begin speaking .

The text mentions Elizabeth, who was Mary's cousin. God had blessed Elizabeth by allowing her to conceive a child despite the fact that she had struggled with infertility and had passed her childbearing years. Elizabeth and Mary encouraged each other during their pregnancies. Elizabeth's son John would grow up to become the prophet John the Baptist , who prepared people for Jesus Christ's ministry on Earth.

Gabriel Tells Mary Not to be Afraid

The Bible's account of the Annunciation continues in Luke 1:30-33: "But the angel said to her, 'Do not be afraid, Mary; you have found favor with God. You will conceive and give birth to a son, and you are to call him Jesus. He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High. The Lord God will give him the throne of his father David, and he will reign over Jacob’s descendants forever; his kingdom will never end.'"

Gabriel encourages Mary not to be afraid of him or his announcement to her, and he reiterates that God is pleased with her. Unlike the cute, cuddly cherubs sometimes portrayed in today's popular culture, angels in the Bible appeared impressively strong and commanding, so they often had to reassure the people to whom they appeared not to be afraid.

It's clear from Gabriel's description of what Jesus will do that Mary's son will be different from any other baby that had ever been born. Gabriel tells Mary that Jesus will be the head of a "kingdom that will never end," which refers to Jesus' role as the Messiah that the Jewish people were awaiting—the one who will save all people worldwide from their sin and connect them to God for eternity.

Gabriel Explains the Holy Spirit's Role

Luke 1:34-38 of the Bible records the last part of the conversation between Gabriel and Mary:

"'How will this be,' Mary asked the angel, 'since I am a virgin?' The angel answered, 'The Holy Spirit will come on you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you. So the holy one to be born will be called the Son of God. Even Elizabeth your relative is going to have a child in her old age, and she who was said to be unable to conceive is in her sixth month. For no word from God will ever fail.' 'I am the Lord’s servant,' Mary answered. 'May your word to me be fulfilled.' Then the angel left her."

Mary's humble and loving response to Gabriel shows how much she loves God. Despite the difficult personal challenge of being faithful to God's plan for her, she chose to obey and move forward with God's plans for her life. After hearing this, Gabriel could conclude his mission, and he departed.

The Annunciation: Angel Gabriel Visits Mary

The Annunciation: Angel Gabriel Visits Mary

What is the Annunciation?

Annunciation means an act or instance of announcing; or proclamation. For Christianity, Annunciation is the announcement by the Angel Gabriel to the Virgin Mary of her conception of Jesus Christ, which she accepted by saying, " Behold, I am the servant of the Lord; let it be to me according to your word. "

The Annunciation was both the divine initiative of God, whereby He took on flesh from the Virgin for our salvation, and the human response, whereby Mary freely accepted God's opportunity offered to her.

"Therefore the Lord himself will give you a sign. Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel." ( Isaiah 7:14 )

The Annunciation is one of the earliest Christian feasts (or holy days) and was already celebrated in the fourth century. There is a painting of the Annunciation in the catacomb of Priscilla in Rome dating from the second century. The Council of Toledo in 656 mentions the Feast, and the Council in Trullo in 692 says that the Annunciation was celebrated during Great Lent .

Annunciation Bible Text: Luke 1:26-38

The Birth of Jesus Foretold

In the sixth month the angel Gabriel was sent from God to a city of Galilee named Nazareth,  to a virgin betrothed to a man whose name was Joseph, of the house of David. And the virgin's name was Mary.  And he came to her and said, "Greetings, O favored one, the Lord is with you!"  But she was greatly troubled at the saying, and tried to discern what sort of greeting this might be.  And the angel said to her, "Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found favor with God.  And behold, you will conceive in your womb and bear a son, and you shall call his name Jesus.  He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High. And the Lord God will give to him the throne of his father David,  and he will reign over the house of Jacob forever, and of his kingdom there will be no end." And Mary said to the angel, "How will this be, since I am a virgin?"  And the angel answered her, "The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you; therefore the child to be born will be called holy--the Son of God.  And behold, your relative Elizabeth in her old age has also conceived a son, and this is the sixth month with her who was called barren.  For nothing will be impossible with God."  And Mary said, "Behold, I am the servant of the Lord; let it be to me according to your word." And the angel departed from her.

Bible Meaning of the Annunciation

"In the sixth month" ( Luke 1:26 ) means the sixth month of Elizabeth's pregnancy with John the Baptist .

While Eve brought forth children in sorrow ( Genesis 3:17 ), Mary, as the new Eve, will rejoice in bringing forth her Son.

Angel Gabriel's announcement emphasizes two truths: first, you will conceive in your womb : the Lord Jesus took flesh (His human nature) from Mary herself; and second, this is the divine Son of the Highest in Mary's womb. Thus the one Person, Jesus Christ, the eternal Son and Word of God , is both fully human and fully divine.

Mary's faithful response is that of the highest obedience to God. The Incarnation is not only the work of God, but it involves the free response of mankind in the person of Mary.

Commentary on the Annunciation

John Gill's Commentary on  Luke 1:28

And the angel came in unto her Into her house, and into the room where she was:

and said, hail ; all health, happiness, and prosperity attend thee; ( Matthew 28:9 )

thou art highly favoured ; or graciously accepted, or hast obtained grace; not referring to electing, redeeming; justifying, pardoning, adopting, and sanctifying grace, which she had in common with other saints; but to that special and particular favour, in being chosen and singled out from all other women, to be the mother of the Messiah:

the Lord is with thee ; so the angel to Gideon, ( Judges 6:12 ) or "be with thee," a usual form of salutation among the Jews; ( Ruth 2:4 )

thou art blessed among women ; and will be pronounced so by other women, as she was by Elisabeth ( Luke 1:42 ) and by another woman ( Luke 11:27 ).

John Gill's Commentary on  Luke 1:31

And behold thou shalt conceive in thy womb, Though a pure virgin, which never knew a man; and therefore, "a behold," is prefixed to it, as being what was extraordinary and wonderful; as it is also, in the prophecy of it, in ( Isaiah 7:14 ) to which the angel manifestly refers, and is, by Matthew cited, as accomplished hereby; ( See Gill on Matthew 1:22 ) ( See Gill on Matthew 1:23 )

and bring forth a Son, and shalt call his name Jesus; which signifies a "Saviour"; and a Saviour Christ is of God's appointing, providing and sending; and a very suitable one, being a spiritual Saviour, and a complete one, both able and willing to save to the uttermost all that believe in Him; nor is there any other, nor salvation in any other: He is the Saviour of his people, whom the Father has given him, even of all the elect, whether of Jews or Gentiles; and of them from all their sins, and all their enemies; and whom he saves with spiritual and eternal salvation.

Luke 1:27

How Did Mary Respond to the Angel Gabriel's Message?

What is Mary's reaction when an angel tells her that she will soon give birth to Jesus, the Messiah?

How Did Mary Respond to the Angel Gabriel's Message?

The Bible passage “. . . and Mary kept all of these things in her heart” ( Luke 2:19 ) has always been one of my favorites. It expresses Mary’s many emotions as she accepts the responsibility of being the Son of God ’s mother. It must have seemed overwhelming for young, simple, and engaged but not married Mary. Mary had never had sexual relations with her fiancée, Joseph—or any other man. So, when the angel Gabriel told her that she would soon be pregnant with the Messiah, her first question was, “How can this be?”

Gabriel replied, “Nothing is impossible with God” ( Luke 1:28-38 ). Mary listened to the rest of Gabriel’s message about the important role of raising Jesus.

The angel Gabriel tells Mary that God has found her “highly favored” ( Luke 1:28 ), and she will bear His son, conceived by the Holy Spirit. Her child Jesus will be the Savior of the world, long anticipated by the Hebrew people. Mary embraces God’s unexpected plan for her life and responds to the angel Gabriel with the iconic words recorded in the King James Version of the Bible: “Behold the handmaid of the Lord; be it unto me according to thy word” ( Luke 1:38 ).

Where Does Mary Go After the Angel Leaves?

Mary leaves Nazareth immediately after the angel’s announcement and goes “into the hill country ... into a city of Judah” to attend to her relative Elizabeth ( Luke 1:36 , 39). Elizabeth is an older woman and people assumed she was barren. However, by a miracle, Elizabeth is six months pregnant. She and her husband Zacharias are expecting a son—who will grow up to be John the Baptist, Jesus’ cousin who will prepare the way for His ministry. The two women spend time together, excited to become mothers and part of God’s plan to redeem the world.

Grateful for Elizabeth’s support, Mary bursts into a song (later titled the Magnificat). Here are some of her song’s lyrics.

And Mary said, My soul doth magnify the Lord, And my spirit hath rejoiced in God my Savior. For he hath regarded the low estate of his handmaiden: for, behold, from henceforth all generations shall call me blessed. For he that is mighty hath done to me great things; and holy is his name.  ( Luke 1:46-49 )

Learning you are having a baby is wonderful news for most women, and the news her baby will be the Son of God brings over-the-top joy to Mary. In the third line of The Magnificat, she acknowledges that though she is from a “low estate,” she will always be blessed by being known as Jesus’ mother.

The Magnificat also contains a prophecy for a New World Order over which Mary’s Son Jesus will reign. Mary sings out, “He has brought down rulers from their thrones but has lifted up the humble. He has filled the hungry with good things but has sent the rich away empty” ( Luke 52 , 53). A Warner Pacific University article on the Magnificat states that “Throughout history, poor and oppressed people have identified with this song—the longest set of words spoken by a woman in the New Testament! Some countries such as India, Guatemala and Argentina have outright banned the Magnificat because God’s preferential love for the poor was too revolutionary.” The enormous impact of Jesus’ life strikes Mary even before His birth.

Where Does Mary Go When Jesus is Born?

Young and energetic Mary travels again when she is nine months pregnant. She and her fiancé Joseph go to Jerusalem “to be enrolled in the house of David” ( Luke 2:4-7 ), registering for the Roman census. The journey from Nazareth to Bethlehem is 90 miles. Bible scholars believe it took Mary and Joseph four days on foot with a donkey with a donkey . Riding a donkey while full-term pregnant couldn’t have been easy. Still, the young mother-to-be and trustworthy Joseph obediently made the trip to Bethlehem to follow government regulations.

The gospel authors do not express Mary’s discomfort or nervous anticipation in their “no room at the inn” birthing place. I can smell the hay and see and smell large farm animals chewing. I can see newborn Jesus lying in a livestock food trough. The manger scene appears cozy in nativity scenes and Christmas carols. The reality is childbirth is difficult and the last place you want your new baby is outdoors in a stable for livestock. Mary endured these challenges with a saintly grace. God had chosen the right young woman to bear His Son.

When Does Mary Realize Jesus is Fulfilling the Prophecies about Him?

Mary has an unusual experience in the Temple when she and Joseph observe the Jewish ritual of the Presentation, 40 days after Jesus’ birth. (The Jewish law in Leviticus 12 and Exodus 13:12-15 states that a firstborn son must be presented in the Temple in Jerusalem as an offering to God .) Simeon, an elderly and well-respected wise man who frequented the Temple, recognizes that Jesus is the Christ promised to the Hebrew people. There is joy and sadness in Simeon’s welcome, for Simeon tells Mary that one day her baby boy will break her heart like a sword plunged into her body ( Luke 2:22-35 ). Artistic depictions of Mary with swords represent Simeon’s dire prophecy. Mary sees the angel Gabriel’s prediction and her own prophecy for her Son’s life unfolding.

Is the Claim 'No Harm Will Overcome Us' in Psalm 91 True?

Is the Claim 'No Harm Will Overcome Us' in Psalm 91 True?

When Jesus is twelve, Mary and Joseph notice he is missing from their group of relatives returning from a Passover trip to the Temple in Jerusalem. Frantic, they discover Jesus back at the Temple, discussing spiritual matters with Jewish teachers. Jesus says he is “about his Father’s business.” Mary begins to understand Jesus is fulfilling God’s purpose for His life. She must have faith to allow Jesus to separate from their ordinary family ( Luke 2:49 ). From that time forward, “His mother kept all these things in her heart. And Jesus increased in wisdom and stature, and in favor with God and men” ( Luke 2:51-52 ). Mary’s faith and mothering skills increase as Jesus matures.

How Does Mary Remain Faithful to the End of Jesus’ Earthly Life?

No one suffers quite like a mother who watches her child endure pain and agony, whether the child is nine or 59. Mary watches Jesus’ ministry trouble Roman authorities more and more as she travels alongside Jesus with the other disciples. She is present at the bitter end of Jesus’ life, when her Son is tried as a criminal and dies on the cross before rising to glory. Mary’s devotion shows a mother’s love for her Son and Mary’s obedience to God.

The last motherly moment a Gospel reader has of Mary is recorded in John 19:25-27 , when Jesus called out from the cross to the disciple he loved, “Behold, there is your mother.” Here, Jesus refers to Mary and arranges for the disciple John to care for his mother. Joseph is now out of the picture (apparently deceased). A widow without a designated son to care for her would have a tough time surviving in first-century Judah.

The tie between a mother and son remains part of the DNA of every mother. The English Standard Version reads, “But Mary treasured up all these things, pondering them in her heart” ( Luke 2:19 ). Her thoughts regarding Jesus’ life and mission were dear and private. She was devoted to God and Jesus from the time the angel announced her future role as the mother of God to the end of Jesus’ earthly life. These worries and hopes for her child were a huge blessing to her. Her example of motherhood blesses all women wondering how a pregnancy or childhood will result. What will the child become? Will I meet the challenges of motherhood? Will I be able to let go of my child when necessary? Parenthood requires great faith, and Mary set a wonderful example of living her faith. God used her as he uses us—in the struggle and the great joy of raising children—so that we too might fulfill His purpose on earth.

As Elizabeth said, “Blessed is she who has believed that the Lord would fulfill His promises to her!” ( Luke 1:45 ).

  • Mary got a visit from the angel Gabriel

angel gabriel visit mary

Mary understood what Gabriel told her. She was excited because the angel had just told her that she was pregnant with the Messiah.

She visited Elizabeth immediately to share her news.

In Hebrew Mary means: bitter .

Joseph married Mary who in due time gave birth to Jesus.

Mary and her husband Joseph were direct descendants of King David.

The family tree of Jesus record in the Gospel of Matthew is through the legal line of Joseph, and the family tree of Jesus as recorded in the Gospel of Luke is through the bloodline of Mary.

Background Reading: – Mary Visits Elizabeth

39 Later on, Mary set out for a Judean city in the hill country. 40 She went into Zechariah’s home and greeted Elizabeth. Luke 1:39-40

More Information: Mary, like her husband Joseph, were both from the tribe of Judah. The couple was considered married, in the time of Jesus, from the day of the betrothal.

Mary and Joseph had an arranged marriage as was the custom of the time. The marriage papers or legal contracts were signed at the time of arrangement of the marriage. That may have happened before the two people had even meet. In a Western marriage the legal contract is signed at the time of the marriage.

The Angel Gabriel Visits Mary

“you are highly favored by god”.

One day Mary was carrying water to her parents’ home when she stopped to rest. While she sat there, the sun seemed to shine brighter and brighter. She looked up and was surprised to see that it was not the sun, but an angel.

Mary trembled in fear, but the Angel Gabriel spoke to her with words of comfort.

“Don’t be afraid. You are highly favored by God, Mary,” he said. “You will conceive and give birth to a son, whose name will be Jesus. He will be great and will be called the Son of God. His kingdom will have no end.”

With tears in her eyes, Mary watched the angel. Who was this heavenly being? Why was she the chosen one? How could she have a baby?

Mary finally asked, “How is this possible? I am not married to any man.”

“The Holy Spirit will come upon you and the power of God will make it possible for you to conceive His Son,” the angel answered. “Your cousin, Elisabeth, who is old and has never been pregnant, will also give birth to a son. With God, anything is possible.”

Mary believed what she was told by the heavenly messenger. She sensed that a rough road lay ahead, but her heart was tuned to the Spirit.

“I am the Lord’s servant and His work will be done,” Mary said, bowing her head.

With that, the angel left, and Mary rose. She determined to visit Elisabeth in Judea as soon as she could.

Gabriel Visits Mary (Kids Bible Lesson) Isaiah 9; Luke 1:26-38

Print Friendly and PDF

Lesson Opening: A Long-Awaited Promise

Ask if anyone has ever been promised something that they had to wait awhile to receive. Maybe it was a gift of some kind, a special trip, etc. Ask what was difficult about waiting? How did they feel when they finally received what had been promised. Was the gift, trip, etc. worth waiting for? Say that God made a promise to send Jesus long before he was born, and today we’ll hear prophecies that were made hundreds of years before His birth. God’s people waited a long time for the promised Messiah to arrive. Pray that God would open our hearts to His Word today and that He would draw us closer to Him through Christ.

Tell the Story

Ask: Does anyone know what it means to make a prediction? Ask: Can you think of any examples of predictions people make? ( Weather forecasts, which sports team will win, product sales, end of the world, etc.) Say: Did you know that there are predictions in the Bible? They’re called prophecies, and they tell about things that will happen in the future. Say: Today we’re going to learn about a very important prophecy in the Bible that tells us something special about Jesus. We’ll also hear how that same prophecy came true and that Jesus is God’s promised Son. That’s our main point for today so let’s learn the hand motions together. Main Point: Jesus is God’s promised Son. Say: Isaiah was a prophet of God. That meant that God spoke to Isaiah and Isaiah wrote down the things God said so he could share them with all of God’s people. One day God spoke to Isaiah about something really special that God was going to do. You see, the world was broken because of sin, and God’s chosen people had stopped believing and trusting Him. But God had a plan to rescue His people and bring them close to Him again. This was the special plan that He told Isaiah about, and Isaiah wrote it all down. Say: I’m going to read a few verses from Isaiah’s prophecy and as I do listen for the different things that he said about God’s Son. Read from Your Bible: Isaiah 9:6-7 Ask: What are some things Isaiah said would be true about God’s Son? ( He would be born as a baby, he would be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Prince of Peace, his reign will never end, etc.) Say: God told Isaiah that He would send His Own Son to live among the people on earth. His name would be Immanuel, which means, “God is with us.” He would be a great king, but not like the kings anyone had ever known before. He wouldn’t live in a fancy palace and have lots of money. No, this king would be poor. In fact, he would be a servant. That might not sound much like a king to you and me, but God promised that His Son would rule as king forever! God also said that His Son would come to earth as a little baby. That sounds crazy right? God planned to rescue the whole world and He would do it with a helpless little baby? It might sound strange, but that’s exactly what God promised. Say: That reminds me of our main point. Let’s practice it again together. Main Point: Jesus is God’s promised Son. Say: Later on in God’s Word, in the New Testament, we read how all these promises of God came true. This time God sent an angel named Gabriel to speak to a young girl named Mary. Mary was engaged to a man named Joseph, but they weren’t married yet. The angel Gabriel appeared to her and he must have been really big and bright because Mary felt frightened. Gabriel told her to not be afraid and that God was very happy with her. Gabriel told her that she was going to have a baby boy and she would name him Jesus. Jesus would be God’s Own Son that He had promised years and years ago. This little baby boy would grow up to rescue the world and bring everyone close to God again. He would beat sin and death and help people to believe and trust God again. Say: At first Mary was surprised. She wasn’t even married yet. How could she have a baby? But Gabriel said that nothing is too big or too difficult for God. Mary trusted that God would do what He had promised. Read Luke 1:31-33 Ask: What are some things you heard that Gabriel said about Jesus? ( Allow 2-3 kids to respond.) Say: That’s right! Gabriel said that Jesus would be God’s own Son and that he would reign as king forever, just like Isaiah had written about! Who remembers our main point? Let’s say it again together. Main Point: Jesus is God’s promised Son. Ask: Have you ever gotten to share some really good news with a friend or family member? What was it? ( Allow 1-2 kids to answer.) Ask: Isaiah and Gabriel got to announce some really good news didn’t they? It’s good news for us that Jesus came to earth because we’re people that he came to save too! God wants to rescue all people, including you and me, from our sin. He wants us to be close to Him and know Him and love Him. When we know Jesus we can know God. That’s why Jesus came to earth in the first place. He wants us to let him beat the sin in our hearts so we can be close to God again. Say: Do you like sharing good news? Of course you do! Everyone loves to tell people about good things that happen to them. Well, the news of Jesus’ birth and life on earth is news that you can share too. You probably know someone (or lots of people) who aren’t close to God. Because we have the good news about Jesus that means we can share it with others so they can know and love God too. Pray …. Dear God, thank you for your Word and for sending Your Son Jesus to earth to live a perfect life and die for our sins so that we could be close to you again. Help us to share this good news with people that we love who don’t know you yet! Amen.

Review Questions

  • What was the main point from our lesson? ( Jesus is God’s promised Son.)
  • What was the announcement that Isaiah made in the Old Testament?
  • Who did God send to announce Jesus’ birth to Mary?
  • Why is the news of Jesus coming to earth good news for us?

Learning Activity 1: Trusting God’s Plan

Supplies: Bibles, paper, markers

  • Say: When someone is about to have a baby there is a lot they need to do to prepare. They have to make sure they have a bed ready for the baby, blankets, diapers, a car seat, etc. When the angel came to Mary he was telling her about a very special baby that she would have. He would be the very Son of God! Mary was probably nervous and scared about the angel’s announcement.
  • Have one child read Mary’s response to Gabriel in Luke 1:34-38.
  • Ask: What was Mary’s attitude about this special assignment from God? (She was completely submitted to God’s will, even when it seemed scary.)
  • Ask: Has God ever asked you to do something that felt impossible? What was your attitude about it?
  • Ask the kids to think about a time that they felt overwhelmed by something God has asked them to do. Give them a few minutes to write about or draw a picture of that time. Give them time to share with the rest of the class if they would like.

Game: Trust Walk Maze

angel gabriel visit mary

Supplies: Masking tape, blindfolds for half the class

  • Prior to class starting create a pathway around the room using masking tape.
  • Have the kids pair up with a friend. One kid will be blindfolded and the other will have to guide them along the tape pathway using only their voice. Allow time for each child to be blindfolded.
  • Come back together as a class and ASK what was difficult about this game. Was it easier to be the blindfolded partner or the one giving instructions?
  • Say that sometimes following God feels like walking with a blindfold on, but we can trust that God has a good plan for our lives, even when we go through difficult times. It was probably hard for Mary to trust God at times, but He never left her and He blessed her abundantly!

I love this class. It included very important points very easy for the kids to understand. Thank you for your help.

Thank you very much Pastor. God has answered my prayer, we have been looking for bible lessons for our children ministry. May the Lord bless you in all your ways. Most of the information on the internet is not for free, but you have given us expensive information for free. I pray that you may be richly blessed, may God grant all the desires of your heart. thank you Lucy.

I publish our church newsletter. I have a column called the Children’s Corner that is something for parents to do with their children to help them understand the Bible and living the life God wants. angel gabriel visit mary

Luke 1:26-56 New Century Version

An angel appears to mary.

26  During Elizabeth’s sixth month of pregnancy, God sent the angel Gabriel to Nazareth, a town in Galilee, 27  to a virgin. She was engaged to marry a man named Joseph from the family of David. Her name was Mary. 28  The angel came to her and said, “Greetings! The Lord has blessed you and is with you.”

29  But Mary was very startled by what the angel said and wondered what this greeting might mean.

30  The angel said to her, “Don’t be afraid, Mary; God has shown you his grace. 31  Listen! You will become pregnant and give birth to a son, and you will name him Jesus. 32  He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High. The Lord God will give him the throne of King David, his ancestor. 33  He will rule over the people of Jacob forever, and his kingdom will never end.”

34  Mary said to the angel, “How will this happen since I am a virgin?”

35  The angel said to Mary, “The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will cover you. For this reason the baby will be holy and will be called the Son of God. 36  Now Elizabeth, your relative, is also pregnant with a son though she is very old. Everyone thought she could not have a baby, but she has been pregnant for six months. 37  God can do anything!”

38  Mary said, “I am the servant of the Lord. Let this happen to me as you say!” Then the angel went away.

Mary Visits Elizabeth

39  Mary got up and went quickly to a town in the hills of Judea. 40  She came to Zechariah’s house and greeted Elizabeth. 41  When Elizabeth heard Mary’s greeting, the unborn baby inside her jumped, and Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit. 42  She cried out in a loud voice, “God has blessed you more than any other woman, and he has blessed the baby to which you will give birth. 43  Why has this good thing happened to me, that the mother of my Lord comes to me? 44  When I heard your voice, the baby inside me jumped with joy. 45  You are blessed because you believed that what the Lord said to you would really happen.”

Mary Praises God

46  Then Mary said,

“My soul praises the Lord; 47  my heart rejoices in God my Savior, 48  because he has shown his concern for his humble servant girl. From now on, all people will say that I am blessed, 49  because the Powerful One has done great things for me.      His name is holy. 50  God will show his mercy forever and ever      to those who worship and serve him. 51  He has done mighty deeds by his power.      He has scattered the people who are proud      and think great things about themselves. 52  He has brought down rulers from their thrones      and raised up the humble. 53  He has filled the hungry with good things      and sent the rich away with nothing. 54  He has helped his servant, the people of Israel,      remembering to show them mercy 55  as he promised to our ancestors,      to Abraham and to his children forever.”

56  Mary stayed with Elizabeth for about three months and then returned home.

Luke 1:26-56 New International Version

The birth of jesus foretold.

26  In the sixth month of Elizabeth’s pregnancy, God sent the angel Gabriel ( A ) to Nazareth, ( B ) a town in Galilee, 27  to a virgin pledged to be married to a man named Joseph, ( C ) a descendant of David. The virgin’s name was Mary. 28  The angel went to her and said, “Greetings, you who are highly favored! The Lord is with you.”

29  Mary was greatly troubled at his words and wondered what kind of greeting this might be. 30  But the angel said to her, “Do not be afraid, ( D ) Mary; you have found favor with God. ( E ) 31  You will conceive and give birth to a son, and you are to call him Jesus. ( F ) 32  He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High. ( G ) The Lord God will give him the throne of his father David, ( H ) 33  and he will reign over Jacob’s descendants forever; his kingdom ( I ) will never end.” ( J )

34  “How will this be,” Mary asked the angel, “since I am a virgin?”

35  The angel answered, “The Holy Spirit will come on you, ( K ) and the power of the Most High ( L ) will overshadow you. So the holy one ( M ) to be born will be called [ a ] the Son of God. ( N ) 36  Even Elizabeth your relative is going to have a child ( O ) in her old age, and she who was said to be unable to conceive is in her sixth month. 37  For no word from God will ever fail.” ( P )

38  “I am the Lord’s servant,” Mary answered. “May your word to me be fulfilled.” Then the angel left her.

39  At that time Mary got ready and hurried to a town in the hill country of Judea, ( Q ) 40  where she entered Zechariah’s home and greeted Elizabeth. 41  When Elizabeth heard Mary’s greeting, the baby leaped in her womb, and Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit. ( R ) 42  In a loud voice she exclaimed: “Blessed are you among women, ( S ) and blessed is the child you will bear! 43  But why am I so favored, that the mother of my Lord ( T ) should come to me? 44  As soon as the sound of your greeting reached my ears, the baby in my womb leaped for joy. 45  Blessed is she who has believed that the Lord would fulfill his promises to her!”

Mary’s Song ( U )

46  And Mary said:

“My soul glorifies the Lord ( V ) 47       and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior, ( W ) 48  for he has been mindful      of the humble state of his servant. ( X ) From now on all generations will call me blessed, ( Y ) 49       for the Mighty One has done great things ( Z ) for me—      holy is his name. ( AA ) 50  His mercy extends to those who fear him,      from generation to generation. ( AB ) 51  He has performed mighty deeds with his arm; ( AC )      he has scattered those who are proud in their inmost thoughts. ( AD ) 52  He has brought down rulers from their thrones      but has lifted up the humble. ( AE ) 53  He has filled the hungry with good things ( AF )      but has sent the rich away empty. 54  He has helped his servant Israel,      remembering to be merciful ( AG ) 55  to Abraham and his descendants ( AH ) forever,      just as he promised our ancestors.”
