The Best Ways to get from Brisbane Airport to the Gold Coast

Brisbane Airtrain Domestic Terminal | How to get to Brisbane Airport from the Gold Coast

Published: April 2021

If you are landing at Queensland’s largest airport, there’s a good chance you may be wanting to to head direct from Brisbane Airport to the Gold Coast.

As Australia’s most loved winter getaway destination, the Gold Coast is known for kilometres of beautiful beaches, great nights out on the Strip, and it’s laid back vibes. While there is an International Airport which services the area (Gold Coast Coolangatta Airport) there are plenty of reasons to fly into Brisbane and head south.

But how do you get from Brisbane Airport to the Gold Coast? Let me share for you the top-four ways.

PS: Have a long layover in Brisbane? Why not spend the day at the beach or one of Queensland’s best theme parks to make your layover more memorable!

How to get from Brisbane Airport to the Gold Coast

By airtrain…..

By far the easiest and most cost efficient way to get from Brisbane Airport to the Gold Coast & Surfers Paradise in onboard the Brisbane Airtrain . The Airport Line departs from the Domestic Terminal, making a stop at the International Airport, Brisbane Central, and running through to Varsity Lakes on the Gold Coast.

There are 6 specific Gold Coast stops on the Airport Line, or you can connect onto the new G:Link tram that will take you all the way from the airport to the beach! With key destinations like Griffith Uni, Mainbeach, Surfers Paradise and finally Broadbeach South, the G:Link is the perfect connection as it takes you in close proximity to all the major hotels in the area.

The Airtrain departs Brisbane Airport to the Gold Coast every 15 minutes during peak times, and every 30 minutes during off-peak.

For more information, check out the Airtrain journey planner .

Cost: Tickets cost $35 one-way. Tickets purchased at the station on the day of travel cost $40. You can get a Brisbane Airtrain tickets discount when advance purchase . Purchase your tickets 7-days out and save 5-15%! For families, the best price for tickets is the Airtrain Connection Family Saver (again, book 7-days out to get the best fare!). The family fare includes a chauffeured vehicle to your accommodation and kids travel free !

Time: It takes approximately 90-minutes to travel from Brisbane Airport (Domestic) to Gold Coast (Helensvale Station). From the Helensvale you can connect onto the G:Link to get the the beachfront area or continue on the Airtrain.

PS: when booking your Gold Coast Accommodation, be sure to ask if they have train transfers . Many do!

By Shuttle…

One of the most convenient travel options to and from Brisbane Airport to the Gold Coast is by airport shuttle. Airport shuttles are fast, comfortable, and without the high cost of a taxi or rideshare.

Many offer airport-to-hotel connections throughout the Gold Coast, Broadbeach, Main Beach and Surfers Paradise making it a handy way to travel to the Gold Coast from Brisbane Airport.

Three of the best Brisbane shuttle services are listed below:

  • Redy2Go – Qantas Frequent Flyers can also earn points when booking them Redy2Go!

  • Link Transfers

Please note: due to COVID restrictions impacting travel around Australia, shared services may be limited at this time.

READ NEXT: Why Qantas Frequent Flyers Should Skip the Gold Coast and Go Direct to Brisbane [Coming soon!]

By Taxi/Rideshare…

The  quickest way to get from Brisbane Airport to the Gold Coast  is by taxi or rideshare.

It’s easiest to get into a taxi at Brisbane Airport as the taxi ranks are all directly outside the Arrivals Halls/Baggage Pick-up area. Taxi’s in Australia are safe and – with added competition from rideshare operators – usually clean and professional.

There are a number of rideshare operators in Australia, but Uber, Ola and Didi are the most popular.

If you’ve touched down in the Domestic terminal, you’ll need to head toward the Pre-Booked Express and Ride Booking pickup area . For bookings made from the International terminal, walk toward the buses and coaches passenger pickup zone.

Please note: at the time of writing, Sydney Airport charges a $3.90 fee for all pickups and this fee will be automatically added to your fare.

Cost: Approx. $100-$180 depending exactly where in the Gold Coast you want to go, and what time of day you travel. Didi and Ola may offer slightly cheaper.

Time:  1-hour in normal traffic conditions.

Brisbane to the Gold Coast – 6 Easy Ways

Brisbane is located around 80 km north of the central Gold Coast area with numerous transport options connecting the two cities. Those options include Train, Car, Taxi, Limousine, and Shuttle Bus services. The Gold Coast is a popular getaway destination for people in Brisbane and the ultimate destination for many who fly into Queensland via Brisbane Airport (BNE).

TLDR; As of 2024; Bus and train are the cheapest, starting at around $17 (per person, or less with a gocard), while limousine and taxi options are the most expensive, starting at around $211 (for four passengers) which are of course the fastest and most convenient options.

travel gold coast airport to brisbane

If you are coming from Brisbane Airport or Brisbane City, this guide will help get you to the Gold Coast via any of those options. So, let’s review each one, and you can choose as you wish.

1. Brisbane to Gold Coast via Train

travel gold coast airport to brisbane

You can catch a train directly from either the Brisbane Domestic, Brisbane International, or Brisbane city stations and head to the Gold Coast.

The train begins at the Brisbane Airport Domestic terminal and then proceeds to the nearby International Terminal, then into the city. You can also catch the train in the Brisbane city at Eagle Junction, Wooloowin, Albion, Bowen Hills, Fortitude Valley, Brisbane Central, Roma Street, Cultural Centre/South Bank, or Park Road stations.

En route to the Gold Coast, it stops only at Coopers Plains, Loganlea, and Beenleigh.

On the Gold Coast itself, there are six stations: Ormeau, Coomera, Helensvale, Nerang, Robina, and Varsity Lakes.

On the Gold Coast, the train stations are located inland from the center of the city so you’ll likely need to catch a connecting tram, bus, or taxi to your final destination.

  • If you are coming from Brisbane to the theme parks, Southport, Surfers Paradise, Main Beach, or Broadbeach then you’ll likely want to get off at Helensvale Station and then take the bus, or G:Link light rail to your final destination.
  • If you are coming from Brisbane to Miami/Burleigh/Coolangatta then choose Varsity Lakes Station and take a connecting bus/taxi to your final destination.

For a large map showing all the stations see Brisbane and Gold Coast rail network , for timetables and planning bus connections from the stations see Translink’s Journey Planner .

There is also the Airtrain service, which is the same train as above but you can opt to have a chauffeured car for the connection rather than use the public bus which is called AirtrainConnect, see  airtrain.com.au .

If you are going to be using public transport across South East Queensland then consider getting a go card , SEEQ card , or go explore card , they are prepaid and make traveling a breeze, see SEEQ Card from TransLink . More about Brisbane train services and Airtrain.

Train fare and travel time estimates:

  • Brisbane Airport (BNE) to Surfers Paradise/Broadbeach/Main using the train and then the G:link tram for the final connection will take around 2 hours and 44 mins ( see route ) and cost around $43 AUD (or less if you have a GoCard ).
  • Brisbane City to Surfers Paradise would take about 1 hour and 48 min and cost around $16.60 AUD (or less if you have a GoCard ).

2. Brisbane to Gold Coast via AirTrain

There is also the Airtrain service, which runs on the same line as the above train with fewer stops in the Brisbane urban area and more frequent services.

  • Ticket prices for the AirTrain from Brisbane Airport (BNE) to the Gold Coast start at around $44 AUD with a discount available for online booking, see  airtrain.com.au .

3. Brisbane to Gold Coast via Taxi

Taxis offer fixed rates for travel between the two cities and from Brisbane Airport, prices start at around $237 AUD, and from Brisbane City, about $211 AUD to the Gold Coast. Standard taxis seat 1-4 passengers although they may struggle to fit 4 people with a lot of luggage, in such a case you’ll need a Maxi Taxi which is a little more than the standard taxi and can fit up to 11 people. Contact 13cabs or Black and White cabs  for bookings.

  • A taxi will take around 60-90 minutes depending on traffic, costing from $211 AUD and up.

4. Brisbane to Gold Coast via Limousine

Limousines are a surprisingly popular method of transport in South East Queensland. Limousine companies offer luxury sedans and stretch limousines. For families and groups, it can start to become quite cost-effective to take a stretch limo, not to mention the convenience, luxury, and experience. For business travellers and those looking for extra service and time-saving, limos are the choice. Limousines are slightly more expensive than taxis. Contact My Gold Coast Limo  for current prices.

  • A limousine will take around 60-90 minutes depending on traffic, costing from $219 AUD and up.

5. Brisbane to Gold Coast via Bus and Shuttle Services

There is no direct public bus linking the cities, see the train further below. Numerous privately run shuttle services operate between central pick-up points, airports of the two cities, and between hotels.

  • The Conxion company offers shuttle services from points in Brisbane including Brisbane Airport, IKEA, Logan Bus Stop, Beenleigh Train Station, and on the Gold Coast, BP Coomera, Caltex near Anaheim Drive Reserve, Hope Island Road, Surfers Paradise Transit Centre, and Caltex Mudgeeraba. Prices range from $50 AUD and up.
  • Greyhound Australia offers two daily coach services between the Brisbane Coach Terminal and Southport, Surfers Paradise (Transit Centre), and Coolangatta. Cost varies depending on how far in advance you book ranging from $18 to $22.

6. Brisbane to Gold Coast – Self Drive

If have your own car, or pick up a hire car at the Brisbane Airport, then driving to the Gold Coast is an easy option. You may like to avoid the morning and afternoon rush hours which usually lasts from around 7 am to 9 am and 4 pm to 7 pm. Outside of those peak times, it’s easygoing and normally takes just over an hour’s drive between the two cities.

You can leave Brisbane by taking the Pacific motorway and as you approach the Gold Coast area, you’ll need to consider which exit to take off the highway according to your final destination.

  • The Smith St Motorway will get you to Southport, Main Beach & Surfers Paradise.
  • For Broadbeach and Mermaid Beach take the Nerang-Broadbeach Road exit.
  • For Miami and Burleigh, take the Reedy Creek Road Exit.

There are several other exits and if you are not familiar with the exits and your destination I suggest checking in advance and having the destination set in your maps app. Also, note that speed cameras operate throughout the area, so check the speed limits and be mindful of your speed.

  • A hire car from Brisbane Airport will cost $147 and up. Fuel cost for the trip would average around $12-14 depending on the vehicle and fuel prices. Travel time is the same as for taxis and limousines, around 90 mins.

7. Flights?

There are no direct flights between Brisbane and the Gold Coast. You may find tickets available for sale that fly from Brisbane (BNE) with a stopover in Sydney (SYD) and then Gold Coast (OOL). It’s a ridiculous option (IMHO), flight time depends on how long the stopover is and ranges from 3.5 hrs to 9 hrs. Pricewise it ranges from $350-$900.

Where to Stay on the Gold Coast

  • When to visit
  • Accessibility

From theme parks to shopping, surfing to ancient rainforest, here’s how to make the most of the Gold Coast.

The Gold Coast's star attraction is its beaches, including the world-renowned stretch of sand at Surfers Paradise. Beyond the beaches, discover laid-back neighbourhoods, a booming culinary scene and the Gold Coast's famous theme parks. And be sure to leave enough time for a trip into the subtropical hinterland for rainforest walks and waterfalls.

The Gold Coast can be reached by international and domestic air travel into two nearby airports.

  • Gold Coast Airport (OOL) is 30km (19mi) from the city and services domestic and international arrivals
  • Brisbane International Airport (BNE) is 80km (50mi) from the city and services domestic and international arrivals
  • Once you have landed at either airport, you can easily hire cars or catch taxis, rideshares and shuttle services to the city centre

The Gold Coast is serviced by a variety of dependable trains, buses, taxis and ferries. When using public transport, be sure to get a go card as this electronic ticket can be used for transport services in South East Queensland.

With about 300 sunny days a year, you're likely to get good weather on the Gold Coast any time you visit. Soak up the tropical rays of summer or enjoy crisp winter days with cooler mornings and evenings. Although the climate here is temperate, expect the hinterland areas to be cooler than the beaches.

  • High season: Summer holidays (November to January)
  • Low season: Autumn, winter, early spring (March to August)
  • Don’t miss: The major events happening in the Gold Coast

Travellers with accessibility needs will love exploring the Gold Coast, which offers a range of accessible accommodation and experiences .

The Gold Coast, with its majestic shoreline and picture-perfect waves, has long been a magnet for those seeking adventure on the high seas. Above the waters, surfers glide atop the crests, while kayakers and jet ski enthusiasts explore the serenity of calmer waters. Below the surface, divers escape into a surreal world of man-made shipwrecks and buoyant reefs. Amid the shimmering waves and towering skyscrapers, it’s easy to overlook the treasures waiting inland, beyond the bustling waterfront.

There’s plenty of green beyond the golden beaches, with hidden waterfalls and secret retreats in lush hinterlands. Themed wonderlands beckon with exhilarating rides suitable for visitors of all ages, while indulgent escapes promise respite from the hectic pace of everyday life.

CHASING WATERFALLS AND NATURAL ESCAPES

travel gold coast airport to brisbane

In the Gold Coast, locals have a knack for seeking out fresh scenery when the beaches get crowded. They venture inland, where sprawling bushwalks and leisurely hikes await.

Among these serene escapes, Moran Falls holds a special place in the hearts of many. Nestled within Lamington National Park, this spectacular waterfall plunges gracefully over a cliff face, offering breathtaking views from the first lookout point. Following the creek upstream leads to the pinnacle of the falls, where visitors are treated to vistas of verdant valleys and distant mountains.

Those seeking an alternative adventure within the same reserve can try the Box Forest Circuit, with its meandering path spanning up to 10.6km. You’ll first encounter Elebana Falls, where waters tumble into wide pools below. Further along the trail awaits Box Log Falls, boasting a dramatic cascade amid rugged terrain.

travel gold coast airport to brisbane

In fact, why not spend the night there? The luxurious glamping experience offered by Nightfall comes with spacious safari tents and fire-cooked organic meals. Or, pick the Binna Burra Lodge that offers cosy accommodations with mountain views, a charming teahouse and a rustic bar.

The World Heritage-listed Springbrook National Park in Numinbah Valley presents a unique attraction: The Natural Bridge . Embark on a 1km stroll along its winding route and enjoy views of the falls as they cascade into basalt caves. Linger past sundown to witness another marvel – softly illuminated stone walls, home to Australia’s largest population of glow worms.

Make the most of the cooler climate from May to October to fully appreciate these natural wonders. Plus, it’s whale-watching season during this time. Join the experts at Whales in Paradise for a narrated journey with guaranteed railside viewing or elevate your sightseeing experience with lunch courtesy of Sea World Cruises .

NEW THRILLS AND SPILLS

Nothing creates memories like a visit to a theme park, and Gold Coast offers two thrilling destinations where families and friends can gather for some fun-filled adventures.

Village Roadshow Theme Parks , Australia’s largest theme park operator, offers an array of attractions spread across its expansive park that comprises four distinct venues. At Sea World , the New Atlantis precinct promises thrills for all sorts of appetites. Take a spin on the Vortex, spiralling as high as 15m above the waters, or be held aloft on a swinging seat as you circle 42m in the air on the Trident. The boldest of riders can take on the Leviathan coaster that touts speeds of up to 80kmh, with the added option of a backwards journey.

travel gold coast airport to brisbane

There are new experiences at Warner Bros Movie World as well. For the younger ones, take a short trip to space with Marvin the Martian: Cosmic Boom, and be one of the first to visit the new Wizard of Oz precinct opening later this year. For thrill seekers, reach speeds of up to 70kmh on the latest ride, The Flash: Speed Force. For a change of pace, head over to Paradise Country to see the two new dingo pups, Akuna and Allira.

Further north lies Dreamworld – a mix of land rides, water park and wildlife sanctuary rolled into one. Families with little ones will enjoy the extensive selection at WhiteWater World, from exhilarating group floats down The Rip to gentle slides and interactive water stations at Wiggle Bay. Keep an eye out for the jungle-themed Rivertown precinct, set to debut at the end of the year, featuring vintage car rides and the park’s most significant investment in a single attraction yet: Jungle Rush, an AU$35 million (S$30.8 million) coaster boasting the world’s first inclined turntable, offering a unique ride experience as each car rotates individually.

The Currumbin Rock Pools are a childhood dream, with multiple jump spots, wading pools, picnic spots and some rope swings for added thrills. Over at Palm Beach Reef Dive Site, expect sightings of stingrays, parrot fish and leopard sharks. Above ground, the Currumbin Sanctuary is the best place to meet with local wildlife, such as the endangered Goodfellow’s tree-kangaroo.

Amid your action-packed escapades, be sure to take some time to immerse yourself in the emerging scene of world-class breweries or savour the delights of the region’s top-tier restaurants. Take your pick from wood-fired pizzas, burgers and salads at Burleigh Pavilion, while its sister restaurant, The Tropic, presents a fine-dining menu with Mediterranean and contemporary Australian flavours.

THERE’S ALWAYS TIME FOR LITTLE LUXURIES

If your idea of a vacation is all about indulgence, then look no further than the newest hotels in the city. The Langham stands out along the coastline of Surfers Paradise as the tallest of the Jewel Towers, resembling intricately carved gemstones against the skyline. This five-star establishment, unveiled in 2021, boasts direct beach access, two swimming pools and a spa inspired by the healing principles of traditional Chinese medicine.

For more traditional decadence, the Imperial Hotel welcomes guests with a grand lobby adorned with chandeliers and offers balcony views overlooking the sea.

Travellers drawn to boutique charm can try qtQT Cabins. Set atop a rooftop, the six quaint “pop-up” homes are complemented by a communal fire-pit and shared kitchen to spark new friendships. For Insta-worthy moments, The Pink Hotel exudes retro charm, boasting a vibrant pink facade reminiscent of a Barbie playhouse.

To enhance your stays, Gold Coast touts exceptional dining options sure to tantalise your taste buds. Burleigh Heads’ Restaurant Labart takes pride in its commitment to locally sourced ingredients and features a protein menu grilled to perfection over charcoal. Meanwhile, Rick Shores has been winning fans with its innovative fusion menu featuring delights such as Alaskan King Crab Yellow Curry and Chicken Laksa Xiao Long Bao.

No holiday is complete without a bit of retail therapy and indulgent relaxation. Explore the sprawling expanse of Pacific Fair , boasting an impressive 400 stores and the largest concentration of high-end retailers in the country. After shopping, treat yourself to a pampering session at The One Spa at RACV Royal Pines Resort – notable not only for its restorative treatments, but also its soothing light-filled designer interior. Or head to Native State in Kirra – a minimalist oasis with revitalising facilities spanning heated vitality pools to traditional cedar saunas, along with holistic workshops designed to nurture your mind, body and spirit, ensuring a lasting sense of wellness long after your holiday ends.

Which itinerary appeals to you? Experience Gold Coast with Singapore Airlines , with direct flights to Brisbane three times a day.

Rex Group's National Jet Express Adds More Dash 8-400 Flights From Brisbane

  • National Jet Express expands to New South Wales, adding Orange as a new destination from the Brisbane base.
  • Passengers can now connect to Rex's 24 scheduled destinations in Queensland or fly interstate via Brisbane.
  • Dash 8-400 aircraft offer efficient, modern travel experience for the mining and resource industries in the region.

Rex Group airline and specialist charter operator National Jet Express today announced its first route from Queensland into New South Wales, marking further expansion from the Brisbane base it launched just ten months ago. One of the airline's De Havilland Dash 8-400 turboprops will fly the new route to move people and goods for a mining customer in Orange, New South Wales.

More growth from the Brisbane base

National Jet Express opened its base at Brisbane Airport (BNE) in July 2023 with a blank canvas and has since quickly established itself as the state's premier Fly-In, Fly-Out (FIFO) operator. As the updated route map shows, National Jet Express (NJE) has expanded its passenger network from Brisbane to seven destinations by adding the new route to Orange Regional Airport (OAG).

As a member of the Rex Group , NJE passengers can connect to Rex's 24 scheduled destinations in regional and rural Queensland from Brisbane. Those needing to head interstate can connect to Rex's growing network of Boeing 737-800 domestic services that include Brisbane, Gold Coast, Sydney, Canberra, Melbourne, Adelaide, Hobart and Cairns.

The new route to Orange is a weekly charter service for mining and civil contractor SEE Civil and will be operated with a modern and fuel-efficient De Havilland Dash 8-400NG , one of nine in the fleet. NJE interim chief operating officer Robin Furber said today:

"We are delighted to be bringing NJE's state-of-the-art De Havilland Dash 8-400NG aircraft into Orange. Rex has a proud and long history of services to Orange via our scheduled services to Sydney. This charter service further grows our Group's presence in the region."

The Dash 8 difference

On April 17, NJE flight NC792 departed Brisbane Airport at 10:02 for a 1:23 hour flight to Orange Regional Airport, landing there at 11:25. The flight was operated with a 2018 De Havilland Dash 8-400NG, registration VH-8QA and MSN 4582 that departed Orange at 13:52 and landed in Brisbane at 15:19.

The Dash 8-400 then operated a flight from Brisbane to another mining center, Moranbah (MOV) and from there to the regional hub of Townsville. The day's last flight was from Townsville Airport (TSV) to the far north Queensland tourism and business city of Cairns, often called the gateway to the Great Barrier Reef. On Thursday, the aircraft operated seven sectors within Queensland and finished for the day when it landed at Brisbane Airport at 20:36.

The Dash 8-400NG used by NJE can seat up to 82 passengers, and its jet-like speeds and modern, quiet and comfortable cabin have made it the aircraft of choice for the mining, resources and construction industry. It is a step-change aircraft compared to the older and less fuel-efficient aircraft previously standard in the FIFO sector but now no match for the NJE fleet.

Discover more aviation news for Australia and Oceania here

NJE, founded in 1994 and part of the Rex Group since October 2021, now has a fleet of 23 aircraft that operate from bases across Australia and Papua New Guinea. From the remote highlands of Papua New Guinea to the capital city buzz of Perth and Brisbane, NJE operates in very diverse environments and needs a versatile fleet for its passenger, charter and freight services.

Apart from the nine Dash 8-400s, NJE uses seven Embraer E190 jets to service mining and resource operations across the country and the three De Havilland Dash 8-100 aircraft for FIFO services in Papua New Guinea (PNG) and between Cairns and PNG. It also operates four British Aerospace BAe 146s for night freight services between Adelaide, Brisbane, Melbourne, Sydney and the Gold Coast.
