Malaysia Luxury Trips & Vacations

Rainforest bliss, extraordinary wildlife, gorgeous beaches – Malaysia delivers ample natural wonder on so many fronts.

Visitors to Malaysia revel in a mix of Malay, Indian, Chinese and European cultures.

Holding up the bottom of the South China Sea in Southeast Asia, Malaysia reaches across the Malay Peninsula and the island of Borneo. You will no doubt first land in the capital Kuala Lumpur, which captivates with its British colonial-style architecture, shophouses and all. Landmark structures to seek out include the old Railway Station, the Sultan Abdul Samad buildings and the glimmering 1,475-foot-tall Petronas Twin Towers, a marvel in glass and steel. Great shopping and entertainment comes via districts like the busy Bukit Bintang, with its malls, cafes, night markets and food stalls. Ancient trading routes have largely shaped Malaysia’s other busy urban centres, including Seberang Perai and George Town in Penang, and Kuching and Kota Kinabalu on Borneo. The natural habitats of the wildlife here is the avenue of choice for the eco-adventurers. Malaysia’s ample rainforests exhibit beautiful birds, orangutans, tapirs, monkeys and more. The sky-blue waters are just as generous, teeming with a kaleidoscope of corals, tropical fish, turtles and dolphins. Excursions to the equatorial rainforests reveal some of the oldest ecosystems on earth. Private, guided nature walks deliver amazing biodiversity, which includes jaw-dropping plant life in the form of orchids, rhododendrons and pitcher plants. The Cameron Highlands is one of the most-visited regions, luring those seeking the orchards and tea plantations, waterfalls and winding rivers throughout its 275 square miles.

Private and Luxury Tours of Malaysia

If you are thinking about where to go next, our experts recommend  visiting Malaysia in 2024 . Wandering the capital Kuala Lumpur on a luxury tour of Malaysia, you can see remnants of the old KL in Chinatown’s shophouse-lined streets. The colonial buildings of Merdeka Square are in stark contrast to the Petronas Towers, the world’s tallest twin buildings. Yet both represent Malaysia—the traditional and the modern, the indigenous and the colonial.

English afternoon tea with scones, Malaysian laksa and roti canai, and endless rounds of satay fresh off the grill, are all popular. In  Penang , colonial Georgetown’s Lorong Baru food hawker zone is awash with everything from Chinese favorite congee to Indian-inspired nasi kandar. If you want to scratch beneath the surface to understand the Malay, Chinese, and Indian influences, as well as those of indigenous tribes, we can help you. Enchanting Travels experts are proficient at creating luxury travel itineraries that take guests under and over, above and beyond, to explore this country’s cultural mosaic.

Island-hopping is just one the many thrills of Malaysia’s  Langkawi  archipelago. Revel in days filled with golden sunsets and pristine sand beaches, and sipping exotic cocktails at beachfront cafés. You’ll get majestic aerial views from the Sky Bridge, cable car, and even from a zip line on the eco-canopy tour of the rainforest. Water sports facilities abound, to suit every level of challenge and fitness.

Malaysia has outstanding snorkeling and diving opportunities. World-famous for serious diving enthusiasts is Sipadan, across from peninsular Malaysia in the Celebes Sea, just off Malaysian Borneo, where the last remaining orangutans of the world live. Located by the Kinabatangan River, visit the Sepilok orangutan rehabilitation center to meet these shaggy-haired creatures. Those doleful eyes never fail to capture the hearts of those who encounter them.

From Mount Kinabalu to the Batu Caves, Malaysia is a multi-faceted land. Cool, fragrant air greets you in the Cameron Highlands, full of tea plantations and strawberry farms. At Gunung Mulu National Park in Sarawak the underground limestone cave systems, including one of the longest networks of caves in the world, are great for an adventurous detour.

A Diverse Country of Superlatives

luxury travel malaysia

Malaysia luxury travel with Ker & Downey offers the unique opportunity to see the many sides of the country on your own terms.

Two Countries in One

Indeed, Malaysia has the fascinating feeling of two countries in one. The cosmopolitan western peninsula, home to booming Kuala Lumpur, is a more developed and populated melting pot of races, religions, and cuisine, and across the South China Sea. Meanwhile, its larger Borneo counterpart is nothing short of a natural wonderland of orangutan jungles, ancient rainforests, impressive cave systems, and rich biodiversity.

Natural and Cultural Paradise

Geographically, Malaysia is almost as diverse as its culture. Rugged karst mountains slope down to rainforests and floodplains teeming with flora and fauna; modern skyscrapers stand proudly next to stilted wooden houses; five star luxury resorts exist mere feet away from ancient coral reefs; and highways give way to warm, sandy beaches and rich, humid mangroves. This is a paradise for lovers of nature and culture, with some of the world’s best and biggest attractions: dozens of the world’s best dive sites, the world’s tallest twin towers, the world’s largest cave system, and one of the world’s oldest rainforest, which just so happens to be home of the world’s largest flower.

Protected Wildlife

With all of these superlatives, Malaysia has set aside national parks to protect its most dramatic assets. For the best caving, visit Gunung Mulu National Park, and to see the amazing array of wildlife—clouded leopards, proboscis monkeys, orangutans, and rhinoceroses—your Ker and Downey Malaysia luxury travel consultant can point you to the ideal park for the animals at the top of your “must see” list.

Safe and Friendly

Despite the spectrum of religions, ethnicities, landscapes, and flavors in this single country, the ultimate fusion and respect borne out of their coexistence is what makes Malaysia one of the safest, most desirable countries to visit and retire to in Southeast Asia. Indeed, no matter where you travel within the country, one thing rings true throughout: the unparalleled warmth and genuine friendliness and sense of humor that makes this diverse population such a delight.

Malaysia luxury vacations

Whether you're visiting Malaysia for its vibrant, modern cities, remote villages in pristine rainforest or long white sandy beaches, we have a good choice of luxury hotels and resorts to make your Malaysia vacation memorable.

The Datai  is one of Asia's most beautiful spa resorts. Set in ancient tropical rainforest in a secluded corner of Langkawi, there is 24 hour dining with award-winning cuisine, two swimming pools, a health club, tennis courts and a golf course. Pool villas feature a plunge pool with built in Jacuzzi.

The Eastern and Oriental Hotel  in the heart of Penang is a beautiful hotel restored to its former glory. Founded in 1885 by the Sarkies brothers who later built Raffles Hotel in Singapore, the suites are fitted with colonial furnishings over polished wooden floors and have full butler service.

Explore Penang’s virgin rainforest with your own naturalist

View of Georgetown from Penang Hill

Home to extravagant Chinese temples, shophouses, and guildhalls (built by merchants to display their wealth), as well as botanical gardens and crumbling remnants of British rule, Penang is somewhere I include in almost every trip I plan. But, I’m not the only advocate of this tiny island off Malaysia’s west coast, and it can get busy.

To escape the crowds, we can arrange a private tour of Penang Hill, the jungle-topped ridge that overlooks the capital, Georgetown. You’ll skip the queues to ride the funicular railway to the top, where your naturalist guide will take you on a tour of The Habitat, a nature trail that borders one of Penang’s two virgin rainforests.

You’ll see the forest from every angle, following the tail through tropical gardens and tangled root networks, before stepping up into the walkways that take you high up into the tree canopy. Along the way, your guide will introduce you to the plants and wildlife that live here, from prehistoric ferns to clouds of butterflies.

To finish, you can watch the sunset across the Andaman Sea while enjoying fresh fruit juice and a slice of mail ai go, a traditional Malay steamed sponge cake with a soft, fluffy texture that melts in your mouth.

Kristang cooking with chefs at the Majestic Hotel

The Majestic Hotel is the grande dame of Malacca , overlooking a busy waterway which once teemed with Chinese junks and spice-laden boats from across Asia. Set in a restored 1920s mansion, it has hosted dignitaries and celebrities over the years, including Tunku Abdul Rahman, Malaysia’s first prime minister, when he announced the country’s independence from the British in 1957.

It’s a prime example of a luxury boutique stay, but I find that an often overlooked highlight is the cuisine. While other cities across Malaysia have Indian and Chinese influences, Malacca is the home of the country’s Kristang community, who have a Malay-Portuguese heritage. The chefs at the Majestic Hotel work hard to record and share Kristang cuisine, a specialty hard to find anywhere else in the world.

Your day will start by joining the chefs on their morning market visit, where they pick up fresh produce for the hotel’s restaurants. You’ll help select the best ingredients, as well as learn about the dried fruits, nuts, dried fish, and herbs that are key to Kristang cuisine.

After a tea and kuih (bite-sized rice sweets) break, you’ll help to prepare your own lunch. It can be tailored to your preferences, but is likely to include ulam, a popular salad of seasonal vegetables and herbs, often topped with dried fish or toasted coconut.

Luxury hotels in Malaysia

The Datai Langkawi

It’s easy to treat yourself to some added luxury across Malaysia, from beach retreats to heritage city stays. I’ve picked out my top choice in some of the most popular destinations, inspired by our Classic Malaysia trip idea.

The RuMa Hotel and Residences, Kuala Lumpur

As you walk into the lobby of The RuMa from the crowded streets of Kuala Lumpur , you’re greeted by a gold-plated wedding dress. The hotel has been designed to celebrate Malaysia’s mining heritage, with gold and copper touches throughout. Every detail has been carefully thought out — I’ve never seen such a beautiful hallway leading to my room.

The hotel may feel refined, but ‘ruma’ means ‘home’ in Malaysia, and there’s a welcoming feel to the hotel, from the attentive lobby staff to the rooms furnished with Malay textiles and traditional rattan furniture. It boasts one of Malaysia’s most high-tech spas, with a list of services that sound like you need a medical degree to understand and a gender-neutral take on treatments.

The RuMa Hotel Corner Studio

The Banjaran Hotsprings Retreat, Ipoh

Some hotels are destinations unto themselves, and this is one of them. The Banjaran Hotsprings Retreat is built into a jungle-covered valley just outside the former mining town of Ipoh, just a two-hour drive north of Kuala Lumpur. Despite its accessibility, once you’ve arrived, it feels worlds away from any metropolis.

Although, it’s not immediately obvious when you’ve actually arrived — the low-level villas, communal areas, and pools are designed to blend into the surrounding forest, with plenty of clever planting and locally sourced materials. Almost everything is open to the elements, making the most of the views over the steep limestone cliffs and jungle-covered valley walls that rise up around the hotel.

The key activity here is immersing yourself in water, in almost any way you please. There’s a naturally heated swimming pool, a series of geothermal hot springs, an ice-bath dipping pool, hydrobaths, as well as the spa’s specialty, a Malay flower-petal bath. Your private villa will have its own plunge pool or geothermal hot-spring whirlpool, too.

Once you’re thoroughly bathed, it’s time to make the most of the hotel’s other natural wonder — the cave network that runs under it. There are meditation and thermal steam caves, but the showstopper is the perhaps underwhelmingly named Jeff’s Cellar restaurant, a cathedral-like cavern lit to make the most of the stalactites that decorate the walls like frozen waterfalls. Here, you can dine on a carefully prepared degustation menu of contemporary Malay dishes.

Banjaran Hotsprings Retreat, Ipoh

Seven Terraces, Penang

For me, luxury isn’t always about the grandest stay — if you want that, the Eastern & Oriental Hotel is a colonial-era landmark in Penang with butler service and a riverside pool. In contrast, Seven Terraces has just 18 suites, each celebrating Penang’s history. Its name comes from the elegant row of seven Chinese shophouses that have been converted into this heritage retreat.

The original feel of these wealthy merchant houses has been restored, with gilded shutters, teak antique furniture, and trinkets from the 19th-century Anglo-Chinese trading boom lining the walls. It’s a welcoming, intimate stay, with a small pool, dining area, and an atmospheric bar with a resident mixologist.

Merchants built their shophouses in the best location they could, and these are no different. You’re right in the heart of this UNESCO World Heritage town, just steps from the street-stalls of Chulia Street and Guan Yin Temple, with some suites looking out across St. George’s Church.

Stewart Apartment at Seven Terraces

The Datai Langkawi

This might be a bold statement, but for me, The Datai Langkawi is one of the best hotels in Southeast Asia. It’s luxurious in the traditional sense — private-pool beach villas on a bay of postcard-perfect sand, a spa offering world-renowned experiences, and a golf course designed by Ernie Els that’s so scenic you might be persuaded to give it a try even if you’ve never picked up a club.

The luxury here extends beyond the facilities, though. Service is a real focus, with a high ratio of staff to guests, and you’ll find that everyone knows your name and personal preferences before your first day is over.

There’s also real luxury here for nature lovers. The dedicated Nature Centre hosts talks and workshops led by the resort’s team of resident naturalists and marine biologists. They also run a series of experiences to get you out into the surrounding environment, including kayak tours through mangroves, birdwatching and butterfly walks, and hikes into the surrounding jungle.

And, if you’re here to celebrate or just want to finish your Malaysian experience with flair, the hotel can arrange for a private candlelit dinner on the beach, with views out across the Strait of Malacca to Thailand.

Malaysia Luxury Travel – Top Itineraries, Costs and Best Hotels

Tropical Malaysia has something for everyone’s travel interests. Tourists can visit on a budget or splash out at the high-end hotels and indulge in Malaysia luxury travel. Everything from beachside resorts to ecotourism attracts visitors from around the world. And visitors looking for a high-class experience have the option of joining one of the luxury tours to Malaysia too.

Luxury travel: packaged or custom tour – what to choose?

Is it better to join one of the small group tours to Malaysia or arrange a custom tour to take you around the places you want to go? Everyone is different and has different expectations. Let’s take a look at the advantages and disadvantages of each.

Packaged tours

Packaged tours often involve arranging a multi-day trip to one or multiple destinations in Malaysia. The tour operators usually plan and coordinate the entire trip. This type of tour is very popular with Chinese tourists.

  • Easier to budget. A pre-arranged package tour often includes all expenses including transportation, meals and the recently introduced tourist tax.
  • Convenient. Tourists fly into Malaysia, and the tour covers the rest. You won’t need to worry about arranging transport or booking hotels.
  • Expect a high level of service. Package tours, in general, strive for customer satisfaction, which means you’re going to get an exceptional level of service.
  • Lack of flexibility. As with all group tours, the itinerary, departure times and destinations are often fixed. You can’t spend more time somewhere that’s particularly interesting. And likewise, you can’t skip the less appealing spots.
  • You share with other tourists. Typical tour packages may have up to 40 people, and you won’t get as much one on one time with the guide.
  • Problems have to go through a third party. Any issues need to go via the travel agent or tour guide rather than resolving things yourself, which can be time-consuming and frustrating.

Custom tour

Customised tours give the visitor more flexibility to visit the places they want and to be more active in planning their own itinerary. Expect a knowledgeable guide to accompany you and offer tips, historical context and anecdotes for a more fruitful cultural experience. Few cons exist for custom tours if money isn’t an issue, which is probably the case if you’re here for Malaysia luxury travel.

  • Flexibility. Custom tours give you the choice of where you want to go, for how long and to what destinations and attractions.
  • Individuality. Guides are more tuned to dealing with your needs rather than the needs of the many.
  • A more comprehensive selection of food and drink. You choose the restaurants and what time you want to eat rather than going to the tour’s commissioned stops.
  • The cost. A custom tour can be expensive if a guide needs to plan and prepare the trip.
  • Not everyone is an expert on everything. The guide may not be suitable in the destinations they’re unfamiliar with.
  • Time constraints. You might not be able to visit everywhere you want to and need to be more aware of time restrictions.
  • Planning. The tourist needs to be more active in planning and organising the trip.

Top itineraries

Malaysia gets a large percentage of its tourists from the Middle East with wealthy Arabs having money to burn and splurge on expensive luxuries. For this reason, expect a certain level of service around the country and especially in Kuala Lumpur.

Most of the high-end hotels often have an adjoining spa and gym, and almost all have restaurants serving world-class local and international food. Let’s take a look at some top itineraries in Malaysia for the ultimate luxury experience.

Kuala Lumpur, Cameron Highlands and Penang tour

A ten-day tour exists that starts in Kuala Lumpur and takes tourists north to the Cameroon Highlands in the central mountains before Penang. Cameron Highlands is a favourite spot for locals because the air is cooler, the hiking and spa treatment. You can find lots of five-star resorts popular with those on a health retreat, which are often included in the tour packages. Penang is an economic and cultural centre and has several boutique hotels to match.

Kota Kinabalu and Sandakan tour in Sabah

The eight-day eco-tour begins in Kota Kinabalu, Sabah’s capital, for two nights before heading to Sandakan for three nights to experience the rainforests and wildlife. Finally, you return to Kota Kinabalu for a further three nights at the Gayana Eco Resort. Anyone who wants to experience Malaysia luxury travel while seeing and enjoying the jungles and wildlife should follow this itinerary.

Best luxury hotels in Malaysia

The prices quoted for the luxury Malaysia hotels are based on two people sharing a room for one night. If you want a top end place to stay, major chains such as the Hyatt, Four Seasons, Sheraton, Hilton and Shangri-La all have branches around Malaysia in most major cities.

Kuala Lumpur

St. Regis Hotel, Kuala Lumpur Prices start from $360 per night for a deluxe room with breakfast. Located close to KL Sentral, the central hub for public transport in Kuala Lumpur.

DoubleTree by Hilton KL From $100 to $125 per night for a double room with breakfast included. Spa services and an on-site sauna are available at the hotel. The Hilton is just over 1 kilometre from Petronas Twin Towers.

Grand Hyatt Hotel The Grand Hyatt is one of the best luxury hotels in Malaysia with the Grand King Room providing the highest level of quality at $240 in a prime location near KLCC.

The best place to stay in Penang for high-quality hotels and resorts is in Batu Ferringhi on Penang Island.

DoubleTree Hilton Resort, Penang Island The resort in Batu Feringghi has a deluxe king room with a balcony and breakfast from $120 per night.

Shangri-La Rasa Sayang Resort & Spa Deluxe twin rooms with a garden view start at $200 per night at this resort in Batu Ferringhi, Penang Island.

Eastern & Oriental Hotel The Eastern & Oriental may not be an international chain hotel, but it’s one of the best in Penang’s capital, Georgetown. Rooms have a distinct colonial atmosphere and you can expect to pay $170 per night for a studio suite. Spa and massage services are available on demand.

Four Seasons Resort Langkawi Tourists have the choice between garden-view suites (from $630) to a beach villa (from $1880). The resort, about 18 kilometres from Langkawi Airport in Tanjung Rhu, is one the best in Malaysia.

The Westin Langkawi Resort & Spa The resort has spacious one-bedroom villas overlooking the sea for $940 per night in Kuah. Expect world-class service and the very highest level of luxury at the Westin Langkawi Resort. The adjoining spa is also one of the best on Langkawi Island.

Ritz Carlton The Ritz, in Pantai Kok, has large deluxe rooms with garden views and suites for $600 and $790 per night respectively. Tourists often like the location, which is close to the Seven Wells Waterfalls and the Langkawi Cable Car.

Kota Kinabalu

Shangri-La Rasa Ria Resort & Spa You can find Sabah’s best spa treatment at this retreat that’s 30 kilometres from Kota Kinabalu. A night in one of the deluxe rooms starts at $200.

Hyatt Regency The centrally located Hyatt Regency in Kota Kinabalu is within walking distance of the malls, Jesselton Point jetty and waterfront restaurants. Rooms are spacious and have a view of the sea. Expect to pay around $200 a night with a buffet breakfast included.

Gayana Eco Resort Gayana isn’t a world-famous chain resort, but it’s one of Sabah’s best accommodation. The resort itself is on Gaya Island, which is accessible from Jesselton Point by speedboat. Beachside villas start at $240 per night with direct access to the beach. The resort has pick up and drop off services to and from the ferry terminal for guests.

Malaysia luxury travel cost per day / how much to budget

If you’re planning luxury travel to Malaysia, you need to be aware of the expected costs for your daily budget. The price will vary considerably based on your own definition of what classifies as luxury. Regardless, independent travellers should budget anywhere from $200 per day to include accommodation, meals and souvenirs.

Accommodation

A double room in a five-star hotel often costs in the price range of $100 to $250 depending on the destination. Some cities, such as Kuala Lumpur and Penang have a large number of high-end hotels to cater for the Middle Eastern tourists and diplomats.

Food and drink

Eating out in Malaysia is affordable compared to other destinations around the world. You can buy delicious street food and get a local experience in one of the roadside restaurants. Alternatively, fine-dining options are available in most towns and cities. If you chose the first, which comes highly recommended regardless of your budget, expect to pay less than $20 (RM 83) in total for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Meals in the top restaurants often hover around $50 per person, and you have the choice between Asian, European and Fusion styles.

Alcohol is expensive in Malaysia if you drink in a bar, nightclub or restaurant. A glass of beer in a bar in Kuala Lumpur can cost anything from $5 (RM 20) and higher for 330 ml. You’ll also tend to see a price with ‘++’ following the number. This refers to the fact tax isn’t included. Fine dining with a glass of beer or wine can turn out to be a costly experience in Malaysia. Expect to pay anywhere up to $100 or more (RM 450) for a night of drinks.

Day trips and tours

The next expense to consider is taking day trip and tours. Knowing how much to budget in Malaysia for a day trip is tricky depending on where you are and the chosen tour company. Average prices tend to be around $50 (RM 208) per person, and you’ll often find them quoted in USD. A selection of half and full day tours are available as well as private excursions in Kuala Lumpur and other cities. Expect to pay around $100 to $150 (RM 416 to 623) for a private guide in Kuala Lumpur including all transport, refreshments and meals.

Souvenirs and other expenses

The daily budget for souvenirs in Malaysia shouldn’t be higher than RM 100 ($24). A range of items are available from handicraft and artwork to unique trinkets from regional ethnic groups. You’re not expected to tip in most places, but some do appreciate a few ringgits.

Malaysia offers affordable luxury travel and you could stay in very high-quality accommodation without spending more than $200 per night. If you want to splurge, magnificent resorts in Langkawi will provide the ultimate luxury. Packaged and guided tours tend to cost more but still work out to be relatively inexpensive. In short, you can have Malaysia luxury travel at very affordable prices.

9 Luxe Eco-Friendly Resorts In Malaysia For A Guilt Free Getaway

by Natalie Khoo | Oct 29, 2020

From The Datai Langkawi to Sukau Rainforest Lodge, discover how these 9 luxe eco-friendly resorts are changing the sustainable travel landscape in Malaysia.

Twenty years ago, luxury travel and sustainability may have seemed like two mutually exclusive concepts. After all, how can extensive buffets, private pools, 24/7 air-conditioned rooms and regularly replaced premium toiletries ever be compatible with the principles of sustainability? Well, now they can.

Over the decades, as the effects of development take its toll on nature, we have been forced to face the reality of our survival if we continue acting inconsequentially. This has perhaps altered the perceptions and lifestyles of some to be more conscious about the way they eat, live and yes, travel.

The Datai Langkawi - The Spa

The Datai Langkawi – The Spa

1. The Datai Langkawi

As far as rainforest retreats go, The Datai sits among the top in the country. And it doesn’t fall behind on the sustainability front either. For one, every tree that was cut during development was replaced by another or repurposed to build the suites and villas. Resident naturalist Irshad Mubarak later coined the Datai Pledge: a series of initiatives aimed at creating a sustainable future for guests and the local community. It includes the rehabilitation of coral reefs and promoting sustainable fishing; protecting wildlife in the area; and introducing educational programs for sustainability, targeted at youth. Meanwhile, guests are treated to spacious, tranquil accommodations and luxe amenities worthy of the resort’s 5-star prestige.

2. Japamala Resort

It took ten years to develop this resort which calls Tioman Island it’s home – for a solid, sustainable reason. Owned and developed by Samadhi Retreats, this 11-acre resort was built without disrupting the natural rocks, trees and formations of the land. As a result, no two chalets or villas are identical. Plus, the materials used in development were either salvaged from old kampong houses or sourced from the Orang Asli, an indigenous tribe in Malaysia. This gives the resort a unique aesthetic it calls ‘Rustic Luxe’. To top off your Samadhi experience, take your favourite pick of aromatherapy oils during check-in and find your room turned into a treat for the senses when you return at dusk – courtesy of the resort’s turndown service.

3. The Andaman, A Luxury Collection Resort

You don’t get Marriott’s seal of a “Luxury Collection Resort” easily. This marks a property that offers unique, authentic experiences that make it a world-class desirable destination. But The Andaman is also one that doesn’t compromise on eco-friendliness – featuring its own marine science laboratory and coral nursery aimed at protection and conservation of nature; in addition to a herb garden, rainwater harvesting and food compost systems, and 95% locally-sourced produce to meet strict sustainability standards.

4. The Banjaran Hotsprings Retreat

Nature shines through the little luxuries at The Banjaran in Ipoh, which cohabits with 260 million-year-old limestone hills, rainforests, hot springs, caves, and waterfalls. Unlike swimming pools which involve a lot of maintenance, the resort provides private hot tubs with natural geothermal water in its villas. There’s even an organic farm on the resort to offer fresh, farm-to-table meals. Now that’s what we call sustainable luxury – the resort’s numerous sustainability awards only cement our point.

5. Borneo Rainforest Lodge

Nestled at the heart of the Danum Valley Conservation Area, Borneo Rainforest Lodge does not take green policies lightly. The multi-award-winning retreat was built using locally-sourced materials and recycled wood to ensure zero wastage for building construction. The chalets are designed in such a way that improves airflow, making ceiling fans sufficient to replace air-conditioning. For the ultimate slice of luxury: a hot tub sits in your private balcony complete with views of the million-year-old rainforest, awaiting you after a day of nature and wildlife exploration right outside your doorstep.

6. Sukau Rainforest Lodge

Named one of the National Geographic Unique Lodges of the World, Sukau Rainforest Lodge prides itself in conservation, community development and sustainable tourism as part of its green policies. Nestled on the bank of the Kinabatangan River in Sabah, this eco-retreat employs many green practices including the use of energy-saving light bulbs, rainwater harvesting, efficient waste management and low noise, zero-emission boats for river safari cruises. Its open-concept design also replaces the usage of air-conditioning in certain areas of the resort to conserve energy. These stringent applications have earned the resort the Travelife Gold Certification for sustainable accommodation since 2018. Yet, guests are still able to enjoy a taste of luxury amidst wildlife and lush forests in their unique Borneo-designed rooms, enriched by a list of activities and facilities to explore.

7. The Kasturi

For those who take pleasure in a slow-paced routine, The Kasturi offers a sanctuary for you to laze back in a private pool with unobstructed views of the beach. Before the boutique resort was built, its founders started the project by developing a turtle hatchery to compensate for inevitable environmental damage due to construction. They then used local materials and recycled timber reclaimed from the old building and kept the project to 23 rooms to minimise its footprint. The rooms use energy-efficient LED lights and harvested rainwater for toilet flushing; the main building uses solar-assisted air-conditioning to save energy; and the gardens use organic fertiliser. All of this occurs in the background, whilst guests sunbathe at their patio, cycle along the forested paths or hit the beach for a stroll.

This small nature destination won’t call itself an eco-resort, but its ‘responsibility’ policies certainly place it on par with the rest on this list. Set amidst an orchard in Perak, the Dusun incorporates sustainable development in farming and building. The former involves the use of natural fertiliser (read: chicken manure and compost), sans pesticides. The latter saw development revolving around the original landscape, so as to minimise cutting down trees or harming the environment. Additionally, the team observes a strict booking policy to ensure a low density so that guests can indulge in the harmonious sights and sounds of nature at the comfort and privacy of their traditional houses and other retreat facilities.

Tucked away in the uninhabited island of Pulau Tengah, Batu Batu borrows its charm from the surrounding powder-white beaches and dense jungles. The founders were careful to ensure the natural biodiversity of the land was not disturbed during development, calling upon a team of marine biologists and environmental scientists to conduct scientific and community-based conservation programmes to protect the area. This eventually turned into the Tengah Island Conservation initiative currently funded by the resort. Not compromising design and comfort, the resort offers a range of private villas, dining and wining venues, and a spa, on top of fun diving excursions and activities for a memorable stay.

Luxury Travel to Kuala Lumpur

luxury travel malaysia

Booming and burgeoning, Kuala Lumpar is a considerable sight to behold in the form of a towering cityscape, sprawling neighbourhoods, assorted cultural collage, and a rich dining, shopping and nightlife scene.

While the city has much to offer, given the other more desirable locations in Malaysia in which to spend your time, KL (as the locals affectionately call it) is more of a necessary entry or exit point.

Nonetheless we can organise the best and most convenient hotels, fine dining experiences and privately guided tours led by our expert guides so as to make the most of your time in KL, according to you.

  • Zoom up to the skybridge that unites the twin Petronas towers in a mere 41 seconds for a terrific viewing platform.

All year round is fine with December to March being the better months.

Kuala Lumpur is a city of contrasts: the space-age feel of the iconic Petronas Towers and the glossy shopping malls and luxury hotels which surround them are a stone’s throw from faded colonial style buildings and ancient temples. The highlight of my time here was my visit to the remarkable Batu Caves on the outskirts of the city – one of the country’s most sacred Hindu shrines, super colourful and a hive of activity, busy with local and visiting worshippers.

8 expert insights for M’sian 5-star hotels that want to champion luxury hospitality

luxury travel malaysia

The words “luxury”, “bespoke”, and “personalisation” were repeatedly heard at the MICE & Luxury Forum on June 8th, where accomplished and notable leaders in the travel industry shared their opinions about the future of luxury hospitality.

The Sands Expo & Convention Centre at Marina Bay Sands was a fitting venue for such an occasion and topic, seeing as it is a hotel that reflects the epitome of luxury accommodation in Singapore.

luxury travel malaysia

Using Macao as a relevant destination and player in the luxury travel industry, the featured panelists did not hold back on major factors and lessons that would influence and shape the definition of luxury hospitality now, and for years to come.

The panelists included:

  • Mr. Alan Watts – President, Asia Pacific, Hilton Hotels and Resorts
  • Mr. Christian Westbeld – Managing Director, Raffles Hotel Singapore
  • Mr. Michael Malik – Chief Operations Officer, Greater China, Marriott International
  • Mr. Rainer Stampfer – President, Global Operations, Four Seasons Hotels and Resorts

luxury travel malaysia

But first, why is the future of luxury travel important to Malaysia? Why should we look at Macao as a role model?

According to STR AM:PM , which tracks major hotel supply, as of 2021, Kuala Lumpur hotel room supply included 23% economy, 19% midscale, 15% upper midscale, 22% upscale, 12% upper-upscale, and 8% luxury.

Over the next three years, the report estimates that the luxury and upper-upscale percentage will increase to more than 60% of the total new supply in Kuala Lumpur.

That means Malaysia should bank on an influx of luxury travellers to cater to, which comes with higher expectations to fulfil, and more discerning (or pettily demanding, depending on how one looks at it) travellers to please.

Macao, on the other hand, just overtook London (the four-year consecutive title holder) as the world’s new five-star capital in Forbes Travel Guide’s 2023 Star Awards with 22 five-star hotels. One of which includes The Londoner Macao, owned by Sands China Ltd.

In fact, Macao is so widely recognised for being at the forefront of luxury travel, that ironically, the Chief Executive of Macao, Mr Ho stressed recently that the city needs more 3- and 4-star hotels .

I guess that’s a first world problem, as millennials would say.

So here’s what Malaysia’s growing collection of 4- and 5-star hotels have to learn from the four experts about luxury travel, especially in this post-pandemic world.

1. Since knowing the market and target audience is crucial, who are the current luxury travellers?

luxury travel malaysia

With years of savings in tow, travellers now have a tendency to buy up in brands and splurge on longer stays. There are two main types of luxury travellers: the aspirational luxury traveller, and the traditional luxury traveller.

Aspirational luxury travellers don’t live a lavish lifestyle day-to-day and are mostly experiencing luxury travel for the first time. Traditional luxury travellers however travel in a way that matches their usual extravagant lifestyle and already have certain expectations from the get-go.

Luxury hotels must bear in mind that they are catering to both, and the former is easier to satisfy because they’re more easily wowed (I will try not to personally take offence at this).

The latter is looking for a home-like experience when they travel and are more demanding than before because they haven’t been on the road for the past few years.

In the pursuit of meeting those standards and gaining the trust of the traditional group, the personal and bespoke elements of luxury hotels and services are more significant than ever.

The smallest details are pivotal in maintaining the interest of this astute crowd and to convince them to return as paying guests.

luxury travel malaysia

2. With rising costs of luxury stays, how can hotels continue to justify that increase in price range?

Most luxury customers don’t know that they are a luxury customer, it’s just what they’re used to in how they live and travel. So the goal is to exceed what they’re already familiar with.

In order to be on the luxury travellers’ bucket list, luxury hotels have to determine and maintain a higher value proposition by creating experiences within experiences .

One of the examples of that is intuitive hospitality (I just learnt this term and encountered it during my stay at Marina Bay Sands).

After turndown service, I returned to my room and was pleasantly surprised by the attention to detail shown by housekeeping. The gestures aren’t “in-your-face” displays of their capabilities, but rather actions to show their proactive thoughtfulness.

I noticed a complimentary mousepad next to my laptop, my charging cables tied with a cable organiser, and a bottle of water and glass next to the bedside table. The bathtub mat was laid out in anticipation that I may want a pre-bedtime hot soak.

I heard from another guest that he had a microfibre cloth placed considerately next to his spectacles.

luxury travel malaysia

3. What are the shifts in the priorities of luxury travellers?

Health safety is the new number one priority and the minimum requirement. Next is the influence of social media in their decision-making.

Other than that, customers want quicker and more efficient service . Hoteliers usually operate in a very organised and structured manner, but they now have to be nimble and flexible to accommodate any impromptu requests.

Finally, there is an increased emphasis on sustainability and wellness . People want to live longer and healthier, thus there is a huge opportunity in wellness and wellbeing features.

luxury travel malaysia

4. How should sustainability be incorporated to attract luxury travellers?

Sustainability is a big buzzword, however it often comes with implied terms and conditions.

Guests want places to stay in where the organisation is focused on sustainability, they want to be associated with a brand that has sustainability practices, but they may not necessarily actively participate in those sustainability efforts.

So it isn’t about pushing sustainability actions aggressively towards guests, rather seamlessly and discreetly implementing those endeavours with intention in the hotel’s operations, facilities, materials, and more.

The key is to make guests feel like they are staying in a hotel that is responsible, but don’t put them in a position where they’re uncomfortably forced to make certain sacrifices.

Basically, I’d like to have the choice to join in sustainability efforts, but I don’t want to feel guilt-tripped or be penalised if I do not.

luxury travel malaysia

5. How can hoteliers walk the talk of the “luxury” branding and keep it fresh, modern, and relevant?

The term “luxury experience” is admittedly overused. At the highest level, luxury is defined by a sense of belonging, individuality, and personalisation.

In essence, it is about leveraging a whole array of resources, technology, and imagination to transport guests into a different lifestyle that is beyond packaged experiences, whether it is a lifestyle that they are already used to, or an aspirational one.

It is about hotels rising to occasion in their service to go above and beyond what a guest expects a 5-star hotel to do, which results in delivering and evoking that feeling of luxury.

Another fundamental way is to compare across borders what’s happening in other countries to be exposed to the standards of luxury travel overseas and then achieve the same back home.

luxury travel malaysia

6. How can luxury hotels diversify and establish themselves as a global attraction?

Luxury hotels should diversify by building or improving inventory and infrastructure to facilitate and host MICE (Meetings, Incentives, Conferences and Exhibitions) related events.

MICE is so versatile, it can be 5,000 people, or 100 CEOs; either way, it is a lucrative and rewarding strategy for a hotel to create its own demand.

Going beyond the hotel’s walls, in order to get into the itinerary of luxury travellers, the destination itself is a prime factor. There’s no lack of luxury hotels in major cities, so for a hotel to really set itself apart, it involves highlighting and marketing the authenticity of the destination .

Hotels can work with SMEs and F&B brands, like what Macao is doing, to establish the destination and location as a global attraction.

luxury travel malaysia

7. How is the industry going to attract, foster, and build the next generation of hoteliers?

Hotel managements have to be deliberate in motivating their employees by creating the right timelines for career growth, innovating jobs so employees are not stuck and only doing one thing for a long time, allowing for quick successions, and opening up opportunities for those who want progression.

Other than employees who are driven for more, leaders should also not forget those who are simply content in what they’re doing, by keeping them engaged and happy.

Above all, the travel industry should be one that is able to integrate or marry work and life aspects together for its employees, and that in itself will continue to drive job demand for the industry.

8. What role does AI have to play in hospitality and travel?

luxury travel malaysia

While AI is extremely powerful, its usage in the hospitality and travel industry is naturally limited because the core of the industry is strongly tied to human relations and interactions.

It isn’t always about how to do things differently, it’s more often than not about how to do things better . And that is where AI is able to play a role in increasing productivity, aggregating and consolidating information or research, and improving operations and processes.

Subtle implementations of AI in luxury hotels should complement and enhance a guest’s stay, instead of applications that are too bombastic and over-the-top. Plus, huge capital investments are required to create, renew, and replace AI hardware or software.

The continuous evolution of technology is a base component in innovating the luxury travel and hospitality industry.

Nonetheless, the reality is that AI cannot replace the human, personalised touches that’ll make us feel cared for—like the mousepad, cable organiser, and microfibre cloth.

Curious eyes watched our every move as we cautiously walked past some long-tailed macaques perched on the railings, our own gazes averted in order to not provoke the animals.

They continued watching. A few more of them gathered further front, this time joined by the relatively docile dusky leaf monkeys aka langurs that the Langur Way Canopy Walk which we tread upon was named after.

“As long as we don’t disturb them, they won’t disturb us,” our guide, a knowledgeable naturalist named Avinash, assured us of our safety.

We only had roughly an hour to take in as much as we could of The Habitat Penang Hill, including appreciating the sweeping views of the rainforest from the said canopy walk and part of the island from the Curtis Crest Treetop Walk. But this simian encounter – along with Avinash’s warning to not touch any of the plants or “you’ll go blind” – sure made our brief visit to the nature preserve an unforgettable one.

Our rushed itinerary that bright morning was due to the fact that we had a plane to catch in the afternoon, which would transport us from Penang to Langkawi Island in Kedah, where we would spend the remainder of our media trip.

Let the enrichment begin

It was just the day before that we flew aboard Malaysia Airlines to Penang – the flight from Kuala Lumpur International Airport’s Terminal 1 took less than an hour.

Prior to boarding our KUL-PEN flight, we were treated to a hearty breakfast at the Domestic Golden Lounge. Fast-forward to a few hours later, after we’d landed in Penang, we found ourselves getting comfortable in our abode for the evening: G Hotel Gurney. The hotel is one of the accommodations that can be easily booked via enrichhotels.com – an online portal under the airlines’ travel and lifestyle loyalty programme, Enrich.

The Penang Hill funicular railway is one of Asia’s longest funicular tracks.

Before calling it a day, we first headed to Gurney Paragon Mall to shop at Kapten Batik, Enrich’s lifestyle partner offering modern artisanal batik wear. Here, we utilised our EnrichMoney Visa prepaid card, which was launched concurrently with the EnrichMoney app in 2023. It can be used anywhere Visa cards are accepted; the card works like a regular debit card.

Any purchase made with the card will be converted into a reward that could later be redeemed for “cashback” using EnrichMoney Points. You could also have the option of earning points instead, should you opt to forgo the cashback.

Kicking off

The highlight of our second day in Penang was a tour of The Habitat. It was a short visit, kind of like a teaser, enticing us to return for a longer, more comprehensive visit next time.

Should we wish to do so, we may easily book a tour through Enrich Xperience, powered by Klook. Enrich members will earn points when booking holiday tours, activities or transportation with it.

Once in Langkawi, we had the opportunity to enjoy a couple more activities that were booked through this service. One was Dream Forest Langkawi, an enchanting night attraction that brings the mythical tales of Langkawi to life through light projections and interactive activities. The other was a mangrove tour that showcased the island’s tropical beauty.

The mangrove tour kicked off from a jetty at Tanjung Rhu, where we boarded one of the many boats gently rocking on the waves.

It may be labelled as such, but the tour does feature more than just mangrove forests. In our case, we also encountered eagles (at a designated spot for eagle-watching), bats (whose sleep was frequently disturbed by loud visitors traipsing through their dark cave), and more macaques – who were aggressively territorial when it came to their turf among the mangrove trees.

It was also an informational tour, with our guide rattling out one interesting fact after another as he drove the powerboat through the waters of Kilim Geoforest Park, even pointing out the Malaysia-Thailand maritime border on the Andaman Sea.

Have fun learning about local legends and folklore at Dream Forest Langkawi.

A rewarding trip

All these outdoor adventures meant we needed a relaxing accommodation to wind down and recharge afterwards. This requirement was met in the form of Parkroyal Langkawi Resort, a five-star beach retreat with 300 rooms and suites, along with seven beachfront villas – some of which we had the chance to wander through during our private tour of the place.

Equipped with a full kitchen, private swimming pool, spacious living area and cosy bedrooms, the villas are perfect for large gatherings whether with family or friends. Meanwhile, in the suites, guests may choose to luxuriate either in the bathtub or in the private pool as they enjoy the sea view from the top floor.

We’d rested well in luxury hotels, rejuvenated in nature and expanded our knowledge of our country’s natural wonders. We’d also satiated the foodies in us with scrumptious spreads that ranged from nasi kandar to fresh seafood servings. All that was left for us to do was spend, spend, spend! (Wisely, of course.)While we bought batik in Penang, in Langkawi we couldn’t miss out on the opportunity to buy chocolates in bulk. Duty-free shops lining the streets of Pantai Cenang, which was within walking distance from our accommodation, helped us achieve this easily enough.

Our fun-filled trip came to an end the next day, as the plane we boarded from Langkawi touched down at Terminal 1. That may be the end of this particular journey, but armed now with the knowledge of how easy it is to plan and go on a hassle-free trip using a single app and card, we’re off to mark our calendar for our next easy-breezy vacation.
