Sometimes Kolkata , our hometown does this to us. We simply wander around, soaking in the little delights, wandering around the lanes and bye lanes and falling in love over and over again with the city. And so does Delhi !

Amazing list! This should keep me busy for a while. I would like to add French noun Flânerie – Aimless strolling or sauntering without a set plan or defined destination; walking at a leisurely pace, simply observing as you’re being taken along. Sometimes I write about similar topics. Here is an example post I wrote in case you or any of your readers find it interesting. Our content complements each other nicely, perhaps we can collab in some way in the future. Keep up the good work. Can’t wait to see something new from you! Cheers!

Fine atmosphere in travelling entertainment (4)

Ross

I believe the answer is:

' travelling entertainment ' is the definition. (travelling fair) ' fine atmosphere ' is the wordplay. ' fine ' becomes ' f ' (abbreviation) . ' atmosphere ' becomes ' air ' (synonyms) . ' f '+' air '=' FAIR ' ' in ' is the link.

(Other definitions for fair that I've seen before include "Just; sunny" , "Pretty; impartial" , "Blonde or equitable" , "Just; passable" , "Pretty good" .)

‘Spaceman’ Review: What Happened Here?

Adam Sandler and Carey Mulligan star in a baffling Netflix misfire about a man in, well, space.

  • Share full article

Adam Sandler, with a dark beard and wearing a T-shirt, floats inside a spaceship.

By Alissa Wilkinson

When was the last time you looked at the exquisite list of synonyms for the word “baffled”? They may be among the best in the English language: puzzled, nonplused, discombobulated, flummoxed, stumped, fogged, wildered, buffaloed. They’re delicious, delightful, full of consonants, evocative of a very particular feeling: you’re presented with something that seems as though it should be clear, but you can’t make it make sense.

The occasion for my bout of word nerdery is the Adam Sandler movie “Spaceman,” and for that I thank the film. It is not a particularly confusing movie on its own, in part because we’ve seen its likes before: a spaceman, alone in the inky blackness, goes a little nuts, and also gains clarity on his life back on earth. What’s flummoxing about “Spaceman” isn’t what it is, but why it is.

Some bad movies were never going to be good ( “Argylle” ). Other bad movies never even tried ( “Madame Web” ). But “Spaceman” is that exquisite rare third thing — an awful movie, a very bad movie indeed, whose lousiness was almost certainly not apparent while it was in production.

Two decades after his previous Black western, Mario Van Peebles is back in the saddle again. This time, his son, Mandela, is with him.

Every sign points toward, if not a masterpiece, at least a pretty interesting genre experiment. The film has Sandler, whose acting chops are often underrated, in a dramatic role as the titular spaceman, whose name is Jakub. It has the great Carey Mulligan, who is currently up for a best actress Oscar, playing his estranged, pregnant wife Lenka. It is scored by the ubiquitous Max Richter. Its director, Johan Renck, also directed the outstanding mini-series “Chernobyl,” among the best television made in the past decade. And though it’s the screenwriter Colby Day’s first major feature, it’s based on Jaroslav Kalfar’s novel “Spaceman of Bohemia,” which won praise from science fiction critics.

I haven’t read Kalfar’s book, but a critic at The Guardian called it “‘Solaris’ with laughs,” which gives me a clue as to what may have gone awry. There’s some “Solaris” swimming around inside “Spaceman,” and also some “Gravity,” some “Interstellar,” some “First Man,” some “Ad Astra.” What there aren’t are laughs.

You might think I’m complaining because Sandler should equal laughs, but — look, here’s the thing. There’s no way to say more without spoiling the movie, so if that bothers you, look away. (Are you still looking? Go away.)

OK. So. Jakub, commander of this ship and its only passenger, spends most of the movie rattling around in his janky spacemobile, getting mad about the broken toilet and talking to a giant, mellifluous space spider voiced by Paul Dano. This cosmo-rachnid has two big, soulful eyes with a row of four little ones above them. It has many arms (I think I counted 10, which is biologically wrong, but I’m not going to tell outer space how to make a spider). It is full of philosophical ruminations on the meaning of existence. And it keeps addressing Sandler — sorry, Jakub — as “skinny human,” lingering on the opening sibilant. Sssssskinny human .

This stuff really should be allowed to be funny because it inarguably is. Imagine Adam Sandler, big earnest eyes, drawn and haggard face from nearly 200 days in space, sitting down to converse with a massive spider. That, my friends, is funny.

Yet almost the whole movie is Jakub dourly remembering his life on earth — notably his wife, Lenka (Mulligan), who is down there on the planet pregnant and miserable and planning to leave him — in aphoristic realizations, helped along by his possibly-imaginary friend. Jakub has been a lousy husband, and the space spider, whom he dubs Hanus, helps him understand why. In short, this is a movie about a guy realizing he’s been terrible and vowing to change, thanks to a spider-therapist.

Furthermore, Jakub is up there with the space spider because a giant purple cloud has been in the sky above the earth for four years. Jakub has been sent on a mission to find out why — on a ship named for Jan Hus, the famous Czech theologian, reformer and martyr — by the Euro Space Program, headed up by Commissioner Tuma (Isabella Rossellini, who seems to be enjoying a vibrant career in weird movie bit parts lately). Jakub is Czech, as is Lenka — both Sandler and Mulligan try for lightly eastern European accents, with middling results — and has a troubled past thanks to his father’s politics. It’s unclear what year it is, but for some reason, the only other space program that’s rushing toward the purple cloud is from South Korea (the movie emphasizes the South part many times, for reasons I assume the studio knows better than I). None of this is explained and, indeed, seems to be beyond the point.

Perhaps this sounds fun-bad to you. It is not fun-bad. It is maudlin-bad, belabored-bad and also pretty boring-bad. If it’s fun-bad ruminations on troubled parentage and spider beings you’re after, please go see “Madame Web.” For me, the best part of watching it — other than getting the giggles when Hanus once again said “sssskinny human” in a clearly serious moment — was imagining how many people are going to click on it when it pops up on their Netflix page and wonder whether that doorjamb they’d accidentally knocked into yesterday had in fact given them a concussion.

“Spaceman” is neither particularly astute about human nature nor discernibly interested in the politics embedded in it, and it is not even meme-ably bad, which is a shame. So much wasted potential. With some room to breathe, to acknowledge the goofiness of its own premise, a layer of solemnity might have been dusted off without sacrificing heart and contemplation. A movie doesn’t have to be deadpan or serious to dip into the human condition. But “Spaceman” proves itself as inscrutable as a purple cloud in a sky, far beyond the reach of even the most thoughtful spider-therapist.

Spaceman Rated R for some scary space stuff, language and a slaughtered pig. Running time: 1 hour 47 minutes. Watch on Netflix.

Is it safe to travel to Haiti right now? What travelers should know

travelling entertainment synonyms

The State Department is urging Americans not to travel to Haiti amid fresh gang violence in the country, which declared a state of emergency last week.

While neither the warnings nor violence are entirely new – Haiti has been a Level 4: Do Not Travel destination in State Department travel advisories since even before the 2021 assassination of President Jovenel Moïse – a spate of recent high-profile attacks, including an attempt by armed gangs to seize control of the country’s main international airport, has sparked renewed urgency.

“The current security situation in Haiti is unpredictable and dangerous,” the U.S. Embassy in Haiti said a security alert issued Sunday. “We are aware that there are few or no commercial options to depart Haiti safely at this time. As they become available, we urge U.S. citizens to take advantage of them. The U.S. Embassy’s ability to assist U.S. citizens is severely limited.”

The U.S. military stepped in to airlift American personnel “into and out of the Embassy” to augment security, U.S. Southern Command said Sunday in a statement to USA TODAY. Meanwhile U.S. citizens in Haiti can fill out crisis intake forms and enroll in the State Department’s Smart Traveler Enrollment Program program for updates.

Here’s what airlines and cruise lines are doing about trips to Haiti.

Haiti violence: Military airlifts American personnel out of embassy as Haiti spirals into violence

Are there direct flights to Haiti?

Three U.S. airlines typically operate direct flights to Haiti: American, JetBlue and Spirit. However,  all three have temporarily suspended service and issued travel waivers for the Caribbean destination.

  • American Airlines customers with flights scheduled to, through or from Port-au-Prince (PAP) through March 15 may modify flights without paying change fees. Changes must be made by March 15 with the same origin and destination cities as the original booking.
  • JetBlue Airways is waiving change and cancellation fees for travelers with flights scheduled to and from Port-au-Prince through March 22. Customers must rebook by March 27.
  • Spirit Airlines is waiving change fees and fare differences on travel to, from or through Cap Haitien (CAP) and Port-au-Prince through April 15. Travelers should rebook by April 30. After that, the airline said change fees would still be waived, but fare differences may apply.

Do cruise ships still go to Haiti?

Royal Caribbean and its sister line Celebrity Cruises stop in Labadee, Haiti , a private destination about six hours away from Port-au-Prince, by car.

According to Celebrity’s website, it doesn’t look like the line has any sailings scheduled there until fall, but Royal Caribbean’s Adventure of the Seas, Explorer of the Seas, Independence of the Seas, Mariner of the Seas, Oasis of the Seas and Symphony of the Seas all have stops scheduled in Labadee over the next month. So far none have been canceled.

“The safety of our guests and crew is our top priority,” a Royal Caribbean spokesperson said in a statement to USA TODAY. “Our global security teams are closely monitoring the situation in the area, and at all times, we remind guests to remain aware of their surroundings while ashore. Should any changes be required, guests will be notified directly.”

The cruise line is aware of the travel advisory and has private security in the area. Only employees and guests are allowed on site. Guests are not allowed to leave the resort, partly for their safety.

The Moscow Metro Museum of Art: 10 Must-See Stations

There are few times one can claim having been on the subway all afternoon and loving it, but the Moscow Metro provides just that opportunity.  While many cities boast famous public transport systems—New York’s subway, London’s underground, San Salvador’s chicken buses—few warrant hours of exploration.  Moscow is different: Take one ride on the Metro, and you’ll find out that this network of railways can be so much more than point A to B drudgery.

The Metro began operating in 1935 with just thirteen stations, covering less than seven miles, but it has since grown into the world’s third busiest transit system ( Tokyo is first ), spanning about 200 miles and offering over 180 stops along the way.  The construction of the Metro began under Joseph Stalin’s command, and being one of the USSR’s most ambitious building projects, the iron-fisted leader instructed designers to create a place full of svet (radiance) and svetloe budushchee (a radiant future), a palace for the people and a tribute to the Mother nation.

Consequently, the Metro is among the most memorable attractions in Moscow.  The stations provide a unique collection of public art, comparable to anything the city’s galleries have to offer and providing a sense of the Soviet era, which is absent from the State National History Museum.  Even better, touring the Metro delivers palpable, experiential moments, which many of us don’t get standing in front of painting or a case of coins.

Though tours are available , discovering the Moscow Metro on your own provides a much more comprehensive, truer experience, something much less sterile than following a guide.  What better place is there to see the “real” Moscow than on mass transit: A few hours will expose you to characters and caricatures you’ll be hard-pressed to find dining near the Bolshoi Theater.  You become part of the attraction, hear it in the screech of the train, feel it as hurried commuters brush by: The Metro sucks you beneath the city and churns you into the mix.

With the recommendations of our born-and-bred Muscovite students, my wife Emma and I have just taken a self-guided tour of what some locals consider the top ten stations of the Moscow Metro. What most satisfied me about our Metro tour was the sense of adventure .  I loved following our route on the maps of the wagon walls as we circled the city, plotting out the course to the subsequent stops; having the weird sensation of being underground for nearly four hours; and discovering the next cavern of treasures, playing Indiana Jones for the afternoon, piecing together fragments of Russia’s mysterious history.  It’s the ultimate interactive museum.

Top Ten Stations (In order of appearance)

Kievskaya station.

travelling entertainment synonyms

Kievskaya Station went public in March of 1937, the rails between it and Park Kultury Station being the first to cross the Moscow River.  Kievskaya is full of mosaics depicting aristocratic scenes of Russian life, with great cameo appearances by Lenin, Trotsky, and Stalin.  Each work has a Cyrillic title/explanation etched in the marble beneath it; however, if your Russian is rusty, you can just appreciate seeing familiar revolutionary dates like 1905 ( the Russian Revolution ) and 1917 ( the October Revolution ).

Mayakovskaya Station

Mayakovskaya Station ranks in my top three most notable Metro stations. Mayakovskaya just feels right, done Art Deco but no sense of gaudiness or pretention.  The arches are adorned with rounded chrome piping and create feeling of being in a jukebox, but the roof’s expansive mosaics of the sky are the real showstopper.  Subjects cleverly range from looking up at a high jumper, workers atop a building, spires of Orthodox cathedrals, to nimble aircraft humming by, a fleet of prop planes spelling out CCCP in the bluest of skies.

Novoslobodskaya Station

travelling entertainment synonyms

Novoslobodskaya is the Metro’s unique stained glass station.  Each column has its own distinctive panels of colorful glass, most of them with a floral theme, some of them capturing the odd sailor, musician, artist, gardener, or stenographer in action.  The glass is framed in Art Deco metalwork, and there is the lovely aspect of discovering panels in the less frequented haunches of the hall (on the trackside, between the incoming staircases).  Novosblod is, I’ve been told, the favorite amongst out-of-town visitors.

Komsomolskaya Station

Komsomolskaya Station is one of palatial grandeur.  It seems both magnificent and obligatory, like the presidential palace of a colonial city.  The yellow ceiling has leafy, white concrete garland and a series of golden military mosaics accenting the tile mosaics of glorified Russian life.  Switching lines here, the hallway has an Alice-in-Wonderland feel, impossibly long with decorative tile walls, culminating in a very old station left in a remarkable state of disrepair, offering a really tangible glimpse behind the palace walls.

Dostoevskaya Station

travelling entertainment synonyms

Dostoevskaya is a tribute to the late, great hero of Russian literature .  The station at first glance seems bare and unimpressive, a stark marble platform without a whiff of reassembled chips of tile.  However, two columns have eerie stone inlay collages of scenes from Dostoevsky’s work, including The Idiot , The Brothers Karamazov , and Crime and Punishment.   Then, standing at the center of the platform, the marble creates a kaleidoscope of reflections.  At the entrance, there is a large, inlay portrait of the author.

Chkalovskaya Station

Chkalovskaya does space Art Deco style (yet again).  Chrome borders all.  Passageways with curvy overhangs create the illusion of walking through the belly of a chic, new-age spacecraft.  There are two (kos)mosaics, one at each end, with planetary subjects.  Transferring here brings you above ground, where some rather elaborate metalwork is on display.  By name similarity only, I’d expected Komsolskaya Station to deliver some kosmonaut décor; instead, it was Chkalovskaya that took us up to the space station.

Elektrozavodskaya Station

travelling entertainment synonyms

Elektrozavodskaya is full of marble reliefs of workers, men and women, laboring through the different stages of industry.  The superhuman figures are round with muscles, Hollywood fit, and seemingly undeterred by each Herculean task they respectively perform.  The station is chocked with brass, from hammer and sickle light fixtures to beautiful, angular framework up the innards of the columns.  The station’s art pieces are less clever or extravagant than others, but identifying the different stages of industry is entertaining.

Baumanskaya Statio

Baumanskaya Station is the only stop that wasn’t suggested by the students.  Pulling in, the network of statues was just too enticing: Out of half-circle depressions in the platform’s columns, the USSR’s proud and powerful labor force again flaunts its success.  Pilots, blacksmiths, politicians, and artists have all congregated, posing amongst more Art Deco framing.  At the far end, a massive Soviet flag dons the face of Lenin and banners for ’05, ’17, and ‘45.  Standing in front of the flag, you can play with the echoing roof.

Ploshchad Revolutsii Station

travelling entertainment synonyms

Novokuznetskaya Station

Novokuznetskaya Station finishes off this tour, more or less, where it started: beautiful mosaics.  This station recalls the skyward-facing pieces from Mayakovskaya (Station #2), only with a little larger pictures in a more cramped, very trafficked area.  Due to a line of street lamps in the center of the platform, it has the atmosphere of a bustling market.  The more inventive sky scenes include a man on a ladder, women picking fruit, and a tank-dozer being craned in.  The station’s also has a handsome black-and-white stone mural.

Here is a map and a brief description of our route:

Start at (1)Kievskaya on the “ring line” (look for the squares at the bottom of the platform signs to help you navigate—the ring line is #5, brown line) and go north to Belorusskaya, make a quick switch to the Dark Green/#2 line, and go south one stop to (2)Mayakovskaya.  Backtrack to the ring line—Brown/#5—and continue north, getting off at (3)Novosblodskaya and (4)Komsolskaya.  At Komsolskaya Station, transfer to the Red/#1 line, go south for two stops to Chistye Prudy, and get on the Light Green/#10 line going north.  Take a look at (5)Dostoevskaya Station on the northern segment of Light Green/#10 line then change directions and head south to (6)Chkalovskaya, which offers a transfer to the Dark Blue/#3 line, going west, away from the city center.  Have a look (7)Elektroskaya Station before backtracking into the center of Moscow, stopping off at (8)Baumskaya, getting off the Dark Blue/#3 line at (9)Ploschad Revolyutsii.  Change to the Dark Green/#2 line and go south one stop to see (10)Novokuznetskaya Station.

Free agency is upon us, and Jason Fitz and Frank Schwab are joining forces to react to and give letter grades for all the biggest moves from day one of the NFL's legal tampering window. James Patterson looks back through history in new 'Time Travel Twins' series

NEW YORK — James Patterson never seems to run out of ideas.

The ultraprolific author is launching a new middle grade series, “The Time Travel Twins,” about a boy and girl who witness key moments in U.S. history, starting with the era of the Revolutionary War.

Released by Little, Brown Books for Young Readers, and co-written with Tad Safran, the series begins Sept. 9.

“I’ve always said that the hardest job with kids is to get them in the habit of reading. Like all of my children’s books, the goal of ‘The Time Travel Twins’ is for a kid to finish it and say, ‘Please, give me another book,’” Patterson said in a statement Monday.

Patterson’s hundreds of books include children’s stories, his “Maximum Ride” and “Alex Cross” thrillers, political thrillers co-written with former President Bill Clinton and a novel written with Dolly Parton about the Nashville music scene.

This story corrects that the characters are a boy and a girl, not two boys.
