Boom’s first test flight could signal the return of supersonic air travel

After years of delays, the colorado-based startup’s xb-1 demonstrator takes flight for the first time..

Boom XB-1 demonstrator supersonic test flight

Aviation startup Boom Supersonic took a major step today toward its goal of returning commercial supersonic aviation to the skies, after the company’s prototype aircraft, the XB-1 , left the ground for the first time this week. The short, subsonic flight over the Mojave Desert came years later than expected, but it shows that Boom is at least still making progress.

The XB-1 took off Thursday at 7:28AM PT, reached a maximum altitude of 7,120 feet, and a top speed of 246 knots (283 mph). It landed 12 minutes later at 7:40AM.

Boom’s overall mission is to launch Overture, the first supersonic commercial aircraft since the Concorde ended operations 20 years ago . The company has secured contracts with major airlines like American and United , as well as manufacturing and development partnerships with Florida Turbine Technologies and GE Additive.

However, some of the most significant news lately has been the loss of partnerships, specifically with Rolls-Royce. The British manufacturer of jet engines parted ways with Boom in 2022, leaving the startup to develop its own engines.

Boom’s overall mission is to launch Overture, the first supersonic commercial aircraft since the Concorde ended operations 20 years ago

Notably, those engines are not used in the XB-1. Boom’s demonstrator aircraft, originally scheduled to fly in 2017, relies on a trio of 1950s-era J85 turbojet engines, the sorts used to power vintage aircraft like the Northrop T-38 trainer or F-5 fighter.

Overture, Boom’s full-size supersonic commercial airliner, will use four of the company’s own engines, which are still under development and will be called Symphony.

In an interview ahead of the flight,  Boom CEO and founder Blake Scholl says that each Symphony engine will deliver roughly three times the combined output of the XB-1’s three J85 engines.

Overture is Boom’s full-size commercial aircraft.

Engine type is just one of many design differences between the XB-1 and the eventual Overture craft, not the least of which is size. Scholl calls the XB-1 a “one-third scale prototype demonstrator for Overture.”

Scholl says the XB-1 is helpful for validation of simulator data and that its development has already borne fruit in the design of Overture — despite the two looking nothing alike.

“If your prototype looks exactly like your production airplane, it actually implies you’ve learned nothing. And we’ve learned a lot of things from XB-1 through the design, development, manufacturing that have caused us to improve Overture,” Scholl says.

Boom’s demonstrator aircraft relies on a trio of 1950s-era J85 turbojet engines

The XB-1 also serves another significant purpose: fundraising.

“The way ventures like this are always financed, you raise some capital, you prove some milestones. And flying this airplane here is a very important one of those milestones. That demonstrates the track record of execution, demonstrates that progress is being made, and enables access to capital and ever higher valuation,” Scholl says. “That’s how you look at SpaceX , any other kind of private aerospace venture, that’s how they all work.”

The current target is for the Overture airliner to take its first flight by 2030, but getting there will be expensive. Scholl says Boom has raised over $700 million so far, but that the overall development of Overture could cost upward of $8 billion.

Beyond finances, one of Boom’s most significant challenges might be right there in its name.

No supersonic jet has flown since the Concorde shut down over 20 years ago.

Today’s regulations against sonic booms would mean subsonic Overture flights over most major land masses, throttling up only over ocean transits. The deployment of technologies developed on demonstrators like the NASA X-59 , which could turn sonic booms into sonic “thumps,” might ease those regulations in the future.

Even so, flying at Mach 1.7 only over water would roughly halve the duration of flights between New York to London or Seattle to Tokyo.

The other big missing piece is sustainability. Flying two times faster than a current jetliner necessarily uses a fair bit more fuel in the process. That situation is compounded by the Overture seating just 64 passengers compared to the 853 souls you can sling over the Atlantic in an Airbus A380.

Sustainable aviation fuel, or SAF , could prevent supersonic travel from becoming an even bigger burden on the environment than today’s aviation industry. SAF is created using renewable sources and is ideally infused with carbon pulled out of the atmosphere via direct air capture . This would, in theory, create a genuinely carbon-neutral aircraft fuel.

The eventual availability and distribution of SAF is an industry problem. Boom’s next steps are proving that its engineers’ designs can not only fly, but that they can break the sound barrier.

Of course, that is the goal for the XB-1, but we have a ways to go before that thing’s sonic booms shake the Mojave sands. CEO Scholl says that XB-1 will undergo a series of up to 15 test flights throughout the year, so-called “envelope expansion” missions, which will eventually push that envelope through the sound barrier.

Boom is also making progress on its Greensboro, NC “superfactory,” which Scholl says is ahead of schedule and will open this summer. But Overture, the airliner that will be assembled there, is years away.

“We’re still targeting being in the air around the end of the decade on Overture. There’s a lot of work to do between now and then on that airplane, and our goal is to do it safely but also with a sense of urgency because we want this airplane for ourselves, our friends, our family, and our customers,” he says.

So, the dream of supersonic commercial air travel is still moving toward reality, but those hoping to move quickly through the air will have to sit patiently for a good while longer.

How safety concerns over Boeing planes affect the air travel industry

HTML EMBED:

The headaches just keep piling up for Boeing: The Justice Department recently launched a criminal investigation into the January incident involving an Alaska Airlines flight, according to an exclusive by the Wall Street Journal . And string of safety incidents on Boeing planes over the last week has once again turned the spotlight on Boeing and the well-documented safety concerns over its planes.

But as U.S. air travel continues to break records, does failing trust in Boeing and its planes actually hurt the industry?

Since an airplane door panel blew out midair on a 737 Max 9 in January , consumer trust in Boeing has taken a serious hit, said Nicki Zink with Morning Consult.

But as for the carriers who fly those planes, “actually, trust in airlines is creeping up a little bit following the end of 2022,” she said. “It’s small, but I think still really notable because it’s actually quite hard for brands to build trust.”

And Mike Gallinari with Mintel said that he doubts many travelers will actually stop flying in Boeing’s planes.

“Taking time out of this booking process to research the craft that the flight might be on and book around that if so desired — I think that’s just a level of work and complexity that your average air passenger isn’t going to undertake,” he said.

And when you consider alternatives like driving, “it’s still far safer to fly than any other form of transportation,” noted travel writer Tim Leffel .

Travelers may think poorly of Boeing, he said — but they’d still rather fly to visit grandma than stay home.

Top tips for finding cheap flights to Moscow

  • Enter your preferred departure airport and travel dates into the search form above to unlock the latest Moscow flight deals.
  • Moscow Vnukovo International Airport (VKO) consists of two terminals, Terminal A and Terminal D. The former is the main terminal that serves most international and domestic flights. Terminal D mostly serves flights arriving from North Caucasus. The terminals are a short walk from each other as they are adjacent and are connected by walkways.
  • Passengers arriving at Moscow Domodedovo International Airport (MDE) can utilize the airport’s shower facilities to freshen up before leaving the airport. Showers are available in the Left Wing of the International Arrivals Area.
  • Passengers looking to explore MDE luggage-free are welcome to leave their luggage at the airport’s storage lockers. You can find the lockers Landslide of the International Arrivals Area and on the Ground Floor of the Domestic Arrivals.
  • Gadget-totting travelers can charge their devices at MDE. The airport offers stand-alone charging stations in every waiting lounge. You can also rent battery chargers from the Left Luggage room.
  • Moscow Sheremetyevo International Airport (SVO) is completely smoke-free in the terminals. However, the airport offers designated smoking pavilions to accommodate smoking passengers. The smoking pavilions are outside at the terminals’ entrances.
  • For flights to Moscow, travelers have four different airports to choose from: Domodedovo International Airport (DME), Sheremetyevo International Airport (SVO), Vnukovo International Airport (VKO), and Zhukovsky International Airport (ZIA). However, most travelers will be flying into either Domodedovo International Airport or Sheremetyevo International Airport, as they are by far the most popular of the four airports.
  • Getting from Sheremetyevo International Airport to downtown Moscow is simple, thanks to the Aeroexpress, which connects directly to both Belorussky Railway Terminal and Okruzhnaya station. From either station, you can head to a number of locations across Moscow in no time.
  • Looking to head straight to the hotel after your flight to Moscow? If you are landing at Sheremetyevo International Airport, the Novotel Moscow Sheremetyevo Airport Hotel is within walking distance of the airport’s terminals. For Domodedovo International Airport, on the other hand, there is the Domodedovo AirHotel, which is located just half a mile away from the airport and offers free transfers to and from the airport.
  • If you need to get between Domodedovo International Airport and Sheremetyevo International Airport, your best bet is to take a combination of the Aeroexpress and the Moscow Metro. There is even a special “Between Airports” ticket available for purchase at the Aeroexpress ticket office.
  • Got a few hours to spare at Sheremetyevo International Airport? Why not stop off at the Aero-beauty hair salon for a cut, trim, or maybe even a dye? Another option is to spend some time at the History Museum of Sheremetyevo, which has several unique exhibitions on the history of the airport.

JetBlue to leave Kansas City, trim service from Los Angeles and Fort Lauderdale amid financial trouble

jet plane aircraft economy airline

JetBlue is ending service to and from Kansas City, Missouri, as part of a broader route reorganization in the wake of a federal judge's decision to reject its merger with Spirit Airlines.

The New York-based carrier also said it would trim routes out of Los Angeles International Airport and Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport in Florida. And it will not be returning to Newburgh, New York, after it suspended service to the town amid the coronavirus pandemic.

The changes were made in an internal memo seen by NBC News. It's the second round of route cuts the carrier has announced this year.

In a statement, JetBlue said the routes and markets had fallen short of expectations.

"JetBlue is constantly evaluating our routes to best serve our customers, return our airline to profitability, and find ways to improve our reliability," it said.

JetBlue has struggled to regain a stable financial footing in the post-pandemic period. In its most recent quarter, it posted a decline in revenues and a net loss. It also said it expected to have 15 Airbus planes out of service because of maintenance issues.

JetBlue had been banking on a merger with Spirit, as well as ongoing service as an American Airlines partner through its Northeast Alliance program, which the Justice Department also rejected recently.

In addition to Kansas City, the carrier said it was ending service for three South American cities.

In the memo, JetBlue said it was doubling down on what it called “bread and butter” routes serving customers on the East Coast and traveling to the Caribbean for vacation and on long-haul cross-country flights.

It also plans to add capacity in places where it was seeing success, including Puerto Rico and Orlando and Tampa, Florida.

"Network changes are a fact of life at every airline, but that doesn’t make it easy to see a favorite route or BlueCity go away," the company said in the memo.

"However, it’s more important than ever that we are surgical about every route in our network, especially as court decisions around the Northeast Alliance and Spirit have impacted our ability to grow."

Meet an 'airline nepo baby' — he's flown for free since birth, gets upgraded to business class, and books last-minute trips to Tokyo and Sydney

  • Joshua Crawford, who calls himself an "airline nepo baby," has flown for free his entire life.
  • He gets access to travel perks because his father has worked for United Airlines for 30 years.
  • Crawford, 23, books spur-of-the-moment international trips and often gets free cabin upgrades.

Insider Today

Step aside, Hollywood, there's a new nepo baby in town.

Joshua Crawford, a 23-year-old who works at a grocery store in LA and recently graduated from college with a degree in marketing, calls himself an "airline nepo baby." The son of an employee who has worked for United Airlines for over 30 years, Crawford can fly for free, get upgraded to business class, and book last-minute vacations to destinations like Tokyo.

Crawford shared a glimpse of the travel perks he enjoys in a February 28 TikTok that has over 4.8 million views.

Rules for relatives of employees vary from airline to airline. At United Airlines, children of airline employees usually lose their privileges when they turn 26. But that won't apply to Crawford, as he's listed as his father's primary companion.

"I'm very grateful for that," he said.

Flying on standby isn't as risky as you'd think

In 2016, Crawford started to realize how lucky he was when planning a trip to Coachella, the music festival held in the California desert.

According to Google Flights, flights to Los Angeles or Palm Springs from New Jersey, where Crawford grew up, can run as much as $450 roundtrip — a price he and his sister didn't have to consider.

"We have an aunt that lives in California, so we just stayed at her house," he said. "We were like, 'Wow, all we have to do is pay for the wristband, and we're going to Coachella.'"

Crawford flies for free domestically because he travels on standby, meaning he doesn't have a seat assigned until close to the flight's departure time.

Crawford said he doesn't always get on the flights he wants. There are times he's had to wait at a gate for a later, emptier flight when previous ones were fully booked.

But Crawford maintains that those situations rarely arise because he's learned to avoid certain routes and major airports during high-peak travel seasons.

Instead of flying direct from LA to New York during the December holidays, Crawford usually does a layover in Denver to ensure he gets a seat.

"If you learn your route, essentially, you will realize you have a lot of other options," he said.

It also doesn't hurt that Crawford's dad is privy to handy behind-the-scenes information like how many seats are left open on flights months before departure.

Related stories

"I'm usually not enlisting on a flight where I have a high chance of being booted off to the next one," he said. "It also really depends on your seniority with the company. My dad's been with United for quite some time now, so I'm definitely a higher priority — and very grateful for my father."

Last-minute jet-setting to destinations like Sydney, Tokyo, and Paris

These days, Crawford takes longer-haul trips — often without much pre-planning. He can book anytime, though he said he isn't given an "official" reservation until around a month before travel.

Over the past year, Crawford said he's booked last-minute trips to destinations including Japan, Australia, and Europe.

"I went to Australia a couple of months ago by myself," he said. "I did like a little solo trip, and I probably planned that about two weeks before I went."

More recently, Crawford said, he celebrated his birthday with a quick trip to Paris booked just a week before takeoff.

Crawford does have to pay taxes when he books flights out of the country. However, they're normally a fraction of the cost of the ticket.

"It depends on the country," he said. "For example, I was leaving Japan, and it was like $70 to get back home."

Perks extend to business-class upgrades

Paying almost nothing to fly isn't the only benefit Crawford gets as an airline nepo baby.

Given how long his father has worked for United, Crawford said he's also a high priority when free upgrades to business class are available.

Known as Polaris , the premium cabins feature spacious pods with seats that can be turned into lie-flat beds and amenities like eye serums, facial sprays, and hand creams.

According to Crawford, the upgrades help alleviate his jet lag.

"I flew to Sydney from LA, and that was about a 16-hour flight. There and back, I was in Polaris," he said. "There's such a big difference when you're in that economy middle seat versus when you've got upgraded on your flight."

As a recent college grad, he said he couldn't afford to fly business class otherwise.

"Round-trip prices for business-class tickets for a long-haul flight can range upwards of $15,000," Crawford said. "Coming out of college — as someone who has student debt and is trying to find a job — it's crazy to me. $15,000 — I could do so much with that."

In his TikTok, Crawford also said he breezes past security and immigration when he leaves and reenters the US.

Speaking to BI, he said these benefits — Global Entry and TSA PreCheck — weren't "completely free," but he got a discount on the application fee (normally $100) because of his dad's job.

Airlines Discuss ‘Taxes Of The Caribbean’

panelists at Routes Americas 2024

Panelists at Routes Americas 2024 in Bogotá.

BOGOTA—In a discussion on aviation competitiveness in the Caribbean, focus of a panel began with one issue: taxation.

In an example provided by Turks and Caicos-based InterCaribbean Airways, in transiting between two unnamed Caribbean countries via another, taxes can amount to greater than $300.

“If the taxation portion of the journey exceeds 100% of the ticket cost, then folks are going to travel only because they have to,” said CEO Trevor Sadler at Routes Americas 2024 here in Bogotá. Dubbing it “taxes of the Caribbean,” he added, “it’s a reality that we continue to present to every government that there is money from tourism or visitors that come from areas outside of simply taxing the journey to travel.”

More News And Analysis From Routes Americas 2024

Airports should represent an opportunity to facilitate tourism and business travel, he told those gathered at the event, “and not be the cash cow for any given country.”

The remarks were tempered by a distinction provided by Airports Council International (ACI)—the difference between taxation that applies to air transport and the airport charges, explained Rafael Echevarne, ACI Latin America and Caribbean director general.

“At the end of the day, someone has to pay for the airport, for the infrastructure,” he said. “We actually have a lot of pressure in terms of development of infrastructure … that costs money.”

While acknowledging a need for reasonable taxation and calling for more collaboration with government, IATA's Peter Cerda, regional vice president for the Americas, said pent-up demand could see travelers seek other destinations. Airfares from the Caribbean can be comparable to flights to both Miami and Dubai, he cited as one example. And, as the anxiety of having to travel and therefore wanting to stay close dissipates, competition will become only more aggressive, he said.

“We want the industry to grow, the airports have to grow … but we don’t want to outbid ourselves to another region,” Cerda said.

Another factor, panelists noted, can be a difference in seeing fees and taxes either being well utilized to achieve improvements, or having those investments be unclear. Exchevarne said, “It comes down to proper transparency.”

Windward Islands Airways International (Winair) proposed piloting different solutions as a way forward, outlining a recent test with its home airport of St Maarten. In the test, so-called day fares up and down the island set taxes at $10 rather than $67, CEO Hans van de Velde said. Within weeks, he said, the airline had “hundreds of bookings,” creating extra traffic.

“We need to be bold to do some experimenting, to show the governments and the airports that volume can compensate the higher prices,” de Velde said.
