+LIVE+ have sold over 22 million albums worldwide and earned two number one albums: Throwing Copper and Secret Samadhi. Their catalog is filled with such gems as “Lightning Crashes,” “I Alone,” “All Over You” and “Lakini’s Juice,” which live on today as classics on rock radio. Throwing Copper—which the band celebrated in 2019 with a new deluxe 25th anniversary edition via Radioactive/Geffen/Ume along with a global tour across major festivals, amphitheaters and arenas--produced the band’s biggest single, “Lightning Crashes,” which was #1 at Modern Rock radio for ten consecutive weeks. Throwing Copper reached #1 on the Billboard Top 200 and eventually surpassed sales of 10 million albums sold, with Rolling Stone honoring the album with placement on their list, “1994: The 40 Best Records From Mainstream Alternative's Greatest Year.” Secret Samadhi (1997) immediately shot to #1 on the Billboard Top 200 and eventually went double platinum. The release of the platinum-selling The Distance to Here (1999) turned +LIVE+ into an international powerhouse and moved the band from arenas into stadiums. +LIVE+ has been and remains today a global concert juggernaut. The band released an acclaimed five-song EP in 2018, LOCAL 717, their first new music in over a decade.

+LIVE+ Unplugged

Tuesday, october 17, 2023  | the forum auditorium in harrisburg, pa.

“After a multi-year break from touring, I am totally ecstatic about singing and playing for LIVE fans again!” says +LIVE+ singer, songwriter and frontman Ed Kowalczyk about the multi-platinum and critically acclaimed band’s tour dates this fall.

“And I’ll be surrounded,” Ed adds,” by an absolutely stellar group of musicians that have all spent years captivating audiences onstage with LIVE all over the world.  It’s going to be amazing and I can’t wait to see you all!”

For these dates, the band’s classic lineup is unavailable due to various extenuating circumstances, so Ed has hand-picked a group of musicians who are part of the band’s extended family: guitarist Zak Loy (who’s been with Ed and +LIVE+ for 10 years), drummer Robin Diaz (the former Hole member who performed with the band for two years) and bassist Chris Heerlein (who played in ED ’s solo band for six years). The +LIVE+ set list will be comprised of their massive hits and fan favorites—songs that have defined the alternative rock era.

Live’s Ed Kowalczyk: 25 Years of ‘Throwing Copper’ + Future Recording Plans

This month, Live will celebrate the 25th anniversary of one of the '90s greatest albums, Throwing Copper . It catapulted the band from upstarts who were just starting to make a dent in the industry with their 1991 breakout Mental Jewelry to a full-fledged, chart-topping, platinum-selling rock band. In fact, Throwing Copper has been certified eight times platinum in the years since 1994.

This summer, the band will join co-headliners Bush and fellow '90s era peers Our Lady Peace for the "ALT-IMATE tour," with plans to definitely turn a focus on their landmark album. We recently spoke with Live singer Ed Kowalczyk about the summer tour and reflected on how some of the themes from this album have evolved over the years. Check out the chat below.

What a great bill this is. I'm so looking forward to this tour with Live, Bush and Our Lady Peace. Can you talk a little bit about what you admire about your touring partners this summer?

Well I'd say we're coming back from a long break. You know, we got the band back together about 2 to 3 years ago now, and we've been slowly working our way back into the venues that we were playing before we split. We started off by playing festivals and now, probably six to eight months ago, we were looking toward the 25th anniversary of Throwing Copper this year and started to think about other bands that might be celebrating a big record from that era.

Immediately Bush came up and I've known the guys in Bush for years, and they're great guys. We played on festivals with them off and on over the years but never toured together, and so, we reached out to them. Or, I'm not quite sure who reached out first to everybody. But it was immediately both bands were like, 'Yes, let's do it.' We felt really good about it. We just felt energetically and sonically, this is a really good bill and a really good match. There are songs, of course, great songs between all the bands. Our Lady Peace as well, obviously. So we were just excited to get out and rock and really be able to do us, and obviously, we're co-headlining.

This is us getting back into the full production and getting to have all that control over that. So, in a lot of ways, I really feel like this, even though we've been playing a lot over the last couple of years, but this tour is like the real comeback if you would. This is our fanbase that has been hearing that we're back and now they get a chance to see us all over the country. So, we're pretty excited.

You mentioned being able to do the full production and thinking back on  Throwing Copper,  you guys were still a band on the way up. So, you might not have been able to do what you had fully envisioned in terms of production at the time ...

Oh yeah. There's definitely a lot that we've learned over the years and how we've developed these songs into, they're still really close to the original version, but we've expanded some of them and done a lot of really cool stuff. Even the last few years since the reunion, we've been tweaking things. So, it's really exciting to get to bring all that experience to now this record, which is obviously 25 years old. But it doesn't feel like that to us because we've been regenerating these songs and reinvigorating them with our new energy as a reunited band. So, it just feels really good. The time is perfect. The time is really perfect.

This is the first time we've had a chance to talk since you've reunited with Live. Can you take me through what that experience was for you, the first time being back in the band and how you've seen things develop over the last couple of years to where the band is now?

Yeah, it was really exciting. We had definitely come to the end of this break period. All of the things that happened between us were water under the bridge, and we just missed each other, so we were really excited to get back onstage. It felt great.

I went through the first show, and it was kind of a slow release that we only announced right at the last minute for about 300 fans. I think we were all a little bit nervous. We're all a little bit out of our depths for that first one. But we quickly got back into it and were firing on all cylinders definitely by the end of that year. We did a bunch of great festivals and just got super inspired being around all these bands, and by the second year of the reunion, obviously, we did a tour with Counting Crows. I feel like we got the band sounding better than ever, but the transition into the reunion was really natural, it was really surprising to everybody, how great it felt. There really wasn't any [rust], well, that first couple [shows] we were a little like okay but it's been awhile.

Really it was such a fast and easy transition back into what we love to do that I don't even remember any great [hurdle] getting back on the stage with the guys, and definitely now I feel like we just have a confidence up there. It's really powerful and the band sounds amazing, really big, and so I think this is really going to be a great bill for us to show it off.

Revisiting Throwing Copper ahead of this interview, I realized you were really asking some hard life questions on that record lyrically at a time where you were just entering young adulthood in your early twenties. All these years later, do you think you're any closer to understanding some of life's mysteries and the questions you were asking on that album?

I like to think so ... I think. I like to think that, I don't know if I have any answers, I don't know if we ever do, but I'd like to think of my journey as a man, and a performer and an artist, tradesperson that all of that time spent, and still being spent contemplating spiritual things has made me over the years more at peace with myself and more confident onstage, more confident just in general. I would hesitate to say that I have found the Holy Grail. We're just a continual journey in the process of growth, and it's fun being in a band and to do it as an artist because of these things that are inspiring me, I get to think about it and/or try to make songs that invite people into these considerations as well, and just, and that's what the fans like, it's what they dig. They like to chew on it, digest it, really take it into their lives and a lot of these songs have become a really big part of their lives and that's pretty incredible.

One of the things that I gravitated toward with you guys, and I'm sure a lot of other Live fans as well, the vulnerability in your vocals at some points, the emphatic passion at other times. The way that you convey your message, there was no doubt you were feeling these things on a personal level. 25 years later, and revisiting these songs on this album, how do you connect to it now?

I would say it's evolved. I would say the passion's the same. I would say, what you hope happens as you play hundreds and hundreds of shows over the years is that you get better and that you become slightly more sophisticated in your approach. I mean, we put these first couple albums out, we were just really our early 20s. I mean I was 23 when Copper came out, and I was just this fireball of energy and my excitement in those days was a different tenor than you're going to get after 27 and a half years when you've seen and done it all.

At the beginning we were just so fresh and so young, we were experiencing these big stages for the first time and things were coming at us really fast, and so a lot of that was just learning how to last an entire tour singing and playing the way we liked to, which is pretty intense. So, I think all of those things and all the years have combined me as a performer and I'm more confident. I feel like the vocal approach to the singing is still super emotional, but that I have some more tools in the toolbox after 25 years vocally and onstage as to how I want to portray the songs.

Songs can take on different meanings over time and one of the first things that came to my head as I was listening to "White Discussion" — it was written way before the social media age but man does it feel like it could fit....

I was thinking that the other night onstage. We were playing it, and I really feel like lyrically it could have come out yesterday and made a lot of sense to people. It's really fun to go back and the way that I wrote these songs, the way that I wrote the lyrics was to always try to keep it not vague, but universal in the sense of letting people have their own interpretation also hoping that by writing that way, maybe 10, 15, 20, 25 years later, people will still be able to find something in it and so it's been fun to play these songs 2018, 2019 and go, 'Wow, they still really feel relevant to me.'

25 years ago I was singing about these things, and 25 years later they still have these themes. They're sort of perennial. They don't really change that much. The world changes but when you nail it in a lyric, and I hope I have nailed it a few times, they don't really change. They sort of, they may adapt to the times, but they don't change. We still get that feeling of, 'Wow, I'm singing something that still matters to me and still matters to my fans.'

Obviously you guys will play the hits in terms of what came off this record but I'm guessing with revisiting Throwing Copper for the 25th anniversary you've kind of delved in a little bit further. Is there a song that's striking you now off the album or something that's more of a personal song to you off this record and if you can talk about why that's reaching you more now?

Yeah. Of course, they're all personal to me because I wrote lyrics to all of them with the music, but I would say "Lightning Crashes" to me. I have four kids now, and when I wrote the song, I didn't have any kids. But it's about birth, about the circle of life and all that. So now with having been to four births of my kids, it's a deeper song to me for sure. It's more grounded in a reality whereas opposed to just figuring out more to sort of just conceptualizing this story. Now it's like I go a whole other level of experience with life now. All these years later and with my kids, and that song definitely still gets me. And I've had fans look to me and actually say they've had the same experience with that song. Since they liked it in the '90s, but now they have their own families and they're like, 'Wow, this is really deep to me, deeper now for me than it was then.'

Mental Jewelry was the album that initially turned me onto you guys but Throwing Copper is where you guys kind of exploded. So many things happened for you on that cycle. You've got Woodstock, you played SNL and MTV Unplugged . For you, maybe some reflections on what that time meant to you and your personal highlights from that album cycle?

Yeah, gosh, there were so many and you just mentioned a few there. They were coming like every couple weeks, these milestones that you dream about as a young band of getting that kind of exposure and those kind of opportunities. You know, I still look back on the Saturday Night Live performance as really special, cause I had grown up watching that show and saw so many of my favorite artists on that show. That was a pinch-me moment. Above and beyond everything else maybe. I don't know. It's hard to split hairs within that year because there was the cover of Rolling Stone , Saturday Night Live , all the big benchmarks that you dream about. But I would say SNL . That performance, that one really just stood out to me as like yeah, we did it, you know?

Taking it back to where we are now. You had a couple of new songs pop up this past year. The Local 717 EP, very cool with a fresh energy. The band feels vibrant again. Can you talk a little bit about where the band is at creatively at this point?

Well, we started writing pretty much right away when we got back together. Which I think again surprised everybody that we felt that comfortable that quickly to get back into something as intimate as the songwriting process. So we've got a bunch of songs lying around, little bits and bobs of things that we stared. And then, you know, of course, we put out the EP last year.

But there's been just such a demand for the band to tour. Also, this 25th anniversary of Throwing Copper . We're really trying to balance all that. How to stay in a creative mode but also achieve all the things that we want to for the band with this anniversary and all the touring that has come our way. So, I'm hoping that, after this tour, that we're gonna really be able to focus on writing and making some new music in the fall.

We have an amazing studio in our hometown headquarters of York, Pennsylvania. And so, we're excited to get back in there. We all sit around and bemoan the fact that we haven't had a chance because of all the touring. So, I think we're gonna try to massage the schedule after this tour, and keep us all free into next year so that we can put out something.

I thought it was cool that you came back with an EP, and obviously things have changed in the music industry since Live's first era. Did you like the EP experience? Do full albums still mean something to you? Or is the immediacy of getting music out there of most importance?

Yeah, I love EPs, and our first release was called Four Songs . It was our EP before Mental Jewelry . We've done them in the past and I really enjoy the five songs, four to six songs whatever you call it. I just think of the EP as five songs. When you have five songs, you can really sequence them and you can have, it's not the full experience of an hour, hour-and-ten-minute album, but we can treat it like a little mini album. And also, it doesn't take as long. We don't have to wait till all these songs are done to release something.

So we've toyed around with the idea of putting one song out at a time too and just not even worrying about it. Just saying, when they're done, we'll just put them out. So, there are all kinds of ideas floating around. But I do agree. I think, you know, with social media and with the internet, it's one of the things that we don't have to do anymore is have that sort of tunnel vision on the old-school album cycle. In the time that used to take, now we can just get the stuff out to the fans and keep them excited.

In terms of creativity, what's inspiring you at the moment? Are you a reader? World events? Or are you more abstract ideas when it comes to writing?

Yeah, I read. I'm always writing music and always playing music, listening to music. You know, I'm a late comer to the vinyl revolution. So, I'm spending way too much money on vinyl records these days. Yeah, I've been like headlong, head over heels in love with the blues, the early delta blues, and blues music and early rock and roll for the last couple years.

So again, it's sort of a piece of my musical education that I left for now. I was joking on Instagram the other day like, I kind of left it like I guess God leaves golf for some guys. I don't play golf, but you know to me, it's come later in life, [laughs] and that for me is the blues and getting really, really into the early blues, or delta blues, like I said, early rock and roll, early country, early bluegrass. The internet is such an incredible resource now for discovering that old footage and records. So yeah, it's been a blues season for me the last couple of years.

Have to ask, I'm also a big vinyl collector myself. Do you have a prized vinyl in you collection?

Oh man, I just picked up a bunch. There's a great record store here in Denver County not far from where I live called Kenosha Records. He actually, it was funny cause he ended up procuring an entire blues collection. He had like this really small collection for a while, and like out of nowhere right when I got into it, and then he had like 4,000 albums overnight. And I said to him, where did all these come from?

I just scored like this really great Canned Heat record cause I'm a huge Canned Heat fan. I know it's not early blues, but it's early enough. Just flipping through here, and I'd say my number one is a Lightning Hopkins and it's on the Fire label, and back says, "VOG, Vintage Version, Fascist Fear Records, so it says Fire Records and it says Fear Records on the back. But anyway, it's really old, and I love Lightning Hopkins, too. And here's Johnny Cash, I picked up an original Johnny Cash release and that was really fun to listen to. Meanwhile, it's a rabbit hole. You can go as deep as you want.

Thanks to Live's Ed Kowalczyk for the interview. As stated, Live will be on tour with Bush and Our Lady Peace this summer as part of the "ALT-IMATE Tour." A Tale of Two Chads: More Drama From Nineties Band Live

By Andy Greene

Andy Greene

As we recently revealed in an in-depth feature, the collapse of Nineties rock band Live was a very complex situation, and nobody can agree on the exact cause. What’s indisputable is that lead singer Ed Kowalczyk now tours with an entirely new version of Live. Original guitarist Chad Taylor and drummer Chad Gracey were best friends from childhood, but now they don’t even speak. Bassist Patrick Dahlheimer is caught in the middle.

“I don’t ever want to play with Chad Taylor again,” Gracey told Rolling Stone. “The best way to deal with a narcissist is to not deal with him, so I don’t want to. Every time he opens his mouth, he’s either manipulating you, trying to control you, or bully you.”

Taylor has a different take on the situation. “I’d do a show with all the boys tomorrow,” he said. “I love them — even Gracey and all his screwed-up shit. I love them, and I love the music we made.”

Chad Gracey : I injured my arm in 2017.

Chad Taylor:  He was making fuckin’ macaroni and cheese for his twin daughters. One of the girls pushed the hot water dish he had heated in the microwave off the counter. It fell onto his bare feet and he jumped in the air. When he landed, I guess he stuck out his arm.

Editor’s picks

The 250 greatest guitarists of all time, the 500 greatest albums of all time, the 50 worst decisions in movie history, every awful thing trump has promised to do in a second term.

Taylor: They were like, “You’re going to need surgery.” “I’m a drummer,” he says. They’re like, “Yeah. You’re fucked.”

The injury came just two days before the group was set to play the Arroyo Seco festival in Pasadena, California, on the same evening as Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers. It was an enormous gig.

Taylor: So Gracey calls me back and he’s like, “Dude. They’re already scheduling my surgery.” I said, “Do you want me to cancel the show?” Ed and Patrick were on the same flight, and they were flying from the East Coast, so they were up in the air. He said, “No, no. Don’t cancel the show yet.” I said, “Well, what do you want me to do?” Now we’re down to less than a day. “Do you want me to find somebody to play drums?” I wanted him to make the decision, not me. And he’s like, “Look. I don’t know what I think about any of that yet, but you better start looking.” I was like, “OK.”

Taylor started by calling up Kevin Martin from Candlebox to see if he knew anyone.

Taylor: I’m like, “Do you know anyone that could potentially do this gig?” He was like, “Yep. I got you a guy. I’ve been using Robin Diaz on drums.”

Gracey: Robin Diaz is a great studio drummer.

Backstage with tiktok star dylan mulvaney, one year into girlhood, how an alleged con man tore apart one of the nineties' biggest bands.

Taylor still didn’t know if the other members of Live would agree.

Taylor: Ed could have been like, “Fuck that, I’m not walking on stage unrehearsed in front of 50,000 people without my drummer.” So Gracey and management called me back and they say, “Tell Robin he’s got the show.” I call Robin and I’m like, “Dude, we’re going to do the show. No rehearsals, just walk on stage.” We literally met Robin when he showed up a half hour before the show time.

Gracey: He came in actually on that day. I played one-armed, with my left arm, and Robin played all the parts.

Taylor: We set up two drum risers side by side with Gracey only with one arm. His other arm was literally in a sling, playing like chicken scratch and cuing Robin visually. He became a conductor, I guess, with his right arm. He could play fills and maybe play the hi-hat some. He could be a part of the show.

They managed to make it seamlessly though the entire set.

Taylor: We walked off stage and we were like, “How was that for you?” Specifically to Chad Gracey. He was like, “I don’t know. It was pretty cool. It seemed like it worked. This crowd didn’t boo or something.”

Live had other dates lined up throughout the rest of 2017.

Taylor: Management starts hitting us with the realities of canceling. They were like, “You guys would be out millions. I’m not talking about gross revenue. We’re talking about unfunded deposits. You’d have to cancel ticket sales. This is a global tour. It’s not very easy to unwind.” So, from a business standpoint, I’m like, “God, this is a nightmare.” Chad was like, “No. We got to push on. We got to do the tour.”

Gracey: We decided to keep Robin around until I was healed.

Gracey: When I was finally healed in about August or September of 2017, I told Chad, “I can play again. We don’t need Robin anymore.” He’s like, “No, I want to have two drummers now.” And I’m like, “What are you talking about?” “No, I just want to have two drummers. You’re both going to be in the center of the stage.”

Taylor: We re-mic the stage and we make Gracey the primary drum sound that’s in the PA, but management is like, “Robin’s an in-demand concert and session guy. If we let him go, we’re not getting him back.” So I called management and I was like, “I don’t want to get stuck in the middle of this, but Gracey’s pissed off.” It was almost like an ego thing: “This is my drum throne, get the fuck off my stage.'” He was even being hostile to Diaz off-stage. Not all the time, but snarky shit.

Gracey: I’m not a very egotistical person in general, but I wasn’t going to let him encroach on my territory like this. I am the drummer of Live, and I’m going to be in the middle of the stage. I’m not sharing it with this guy.

Taylor: I’m like, “This is just fucked up. He saved your fuckin’ ass. He stepped in. He hasn’t done anything wrong to you.” Finally that tour comes to an end. It’s clear Gracey can handle playing his parts. We’re now booking the 2018 tour, and I get this call from management that’s like, “Hey. It’s only been two or three months since Gracey’s been back and healed. What happens if he gets hurt again? Why don’t we come up with a new stage setup, and we’ll take Diaz, and he won’t be at the center of the stage, but we’ll push him off far to one side?” I’m like, “You guys are creating a fuckin’ nightmare.”

Gracey: I actually quit the band in Rochester. Ed got involved, and we decided we’ll put Robin on the side and I would play in the middle. So all of ’18, we had two drummers on stage.

Diaz left before the 2019 tour, and Live brought in another musician named Clint Simmons to play percussion. Things were relatively stable until they decided to enter the studio and cut a new EP, Local 717.

Gracey: Unbeknownst to me, an EP was being made without me.

Taylor: Gracey comes into the studio on day one. Everything’s all mic’d up. It’s just me, Gracey, and Patrick. Ed didn’t want to stay there since he always used to clash with Gracey in the studio. And dude, an hour goes by and it’s almost like Gracey had barely even played on the song. We hit playback. And Patrick says, “Well, this is clearly not working.” And then Gracey clicked into his talkback and he said, “Guys, I’m out of ideas. What do you want me to play?” I turned around and looked at Patrick and he goes, “Oh fuck. When the drummer is asking us what to play, we’re fucked.”

According to Taylor, they gently escorted Gracey out of the studio and attempted to regroup. When he came back, they played him tapes from the session.

Taylor: Gracey was like, “I’m just not hearing the song. I can’t find my way into it yet.” And I said, “Hey, let’s not overthink this. We own the studio. Let’s turn off the gear and walk away. You tell me when you’re back into the vibe.” Three, four days go by. I get a phone call from Ed. He’s like, “Hey, how are drums going?” “Well Ed, it’s fuckin’ dreadful. It’s terrible. We don’t have anything recorded.” He’s like, “What do you mean you don’t have anything recorded? We made Throwing Copper in 10 days. We’re four days into tracking just a handful of easy songs. What do you mean you don’t have anything?” I was like, “Dude, I don’t know what to do.” And so Ed says, “Have you thought about throwing Diaz a track?” I’m like, “Well, no.” He’s like, “He’s out at Dave Grohl’s studio right now tracking.” I basically said, “That call is above my pay grade.” Ed said, “Let’s at least hear what it sounds like with a different drummer.” So I call up Diaz.

Taylor says they sent Diaz the Pro Tools sessions at the studio where he was working. They came back three hours later with new drum parts.

There were a mere five songs on the EP, so the sessions with Diaz went very quickly.

Taylor: One of the songs was a Velvet Underground cover [“Venus in Furs”], and I think Patrick originally played drums on that. Even on that original recording, the drums are basically an afterthought. It was so easy. We already had the one song, so we just had to cut three more with Diaz. He did them in one day. We were about to leave on the Counting Crows tour. Management was like, “The EP is done. Release it.”

Taylor had to call up Gracey to tell him they finished the EP with Diaz on drums.

Taylor: I called Gracey and I said, “Look, management’s all over me to finish up this EP. We don’t have drums. So we elected…” I always use the word “we.” But I might even have said to him, “I elected,” to try and deflect maybe a little bit from the band. “I wanted to hear what a different drummer would do.” And he said to me right away. “OK, well, I understand that. I want to hear it. Send it to me.” What I wanted to hear was, “Fuck that. I’m on an airplane, I’m coming in.” But what he said was, “That’s not how I would play, but it sounds pretty good.”

Taylor admits he has some regrets about the situation.

Taylor: I probably failed him in that moment as a friend. I should have said, “What the fuck is going on with you? We worked so hard to get our band back and reunited and now we’re making a new album. It’s our first album in 12 years or whatever the fuck it is. Why are you not showing up? What’s wrong?” But I didn’t do that. I did call Patrick. We call him “Switzerland.” I said, “What the fuck am I supposed to do?” And so Patrick said, “Just finish the EP. It’s only an EP. Just finish it with Diaz.”

Gracey: Chad gaslit everybody and told them I wasn’t mentally able to do it, and management believed him. And so we put out this new product. I’m not even playing drums on it.

Gracey: I was told to basically pretend that I was the drummer on it. And I’m a very loyal person. I don’t like to rock the boat. I don’t like to make waves. And so I was like, “Well, I hate this, but I’ll go along with it so the band doesn’t look bad.” At the time, this is the worst thing anyone’s ever done to me personally. And he was just kind of like, “Tough shit.” He and I were best friends. We grew up together. We slept over each other’s houses all through middle school, high school. We’re inseparable. And I go to him as my best friend still at the time, and go, “You’ve just done the worst thing anyone’s ever done to me.” And he’s like, “Tough shit.”

The band carried on through 2019 and into early 2020 with the original four-man lineup intact. But after the pandemic, Kowalczyk let his three bandmates go and began gigging as Live with three new musicians. Zak Loy is on guitar. Chris Heerlein is on bass. And on drums? Robin Diaz.

About +LIVE+:

+LIVE+ have sold over 22 million albums worldwide and earned two number one albums: Throwing Copper and Secret Samadhi . Their catalog is filled with such gems as “Lightning Crashes,” “I Alone,” “All Over You” and “Lakini’s Juice,” which live on today as classics on rock radio. Throwing Copper —which the band celebrated in 2019 with a new deluxe 25 th anniversary edition via Radioactive/Geffen/Ume along with a global tour across major festivals, amphitheaters and arenas–produced the band’s biggest single, “Lightning Crashes,” which was #1 at Modern Rock radio for ten consecutive weeks. Throwing Copper reached #1 on the Billboard Top 200 and eventually surpassed sales of 10 million albums sold, with Rolling Stone honoring the album with placement on their list, “1994: The 40 Best Records From Mainstream Alternative’s Greatest Year.” Secret Samadhi (1997) immediately shot to #1 on the Billboard Top 200 and eventually went double platinum. The release of the platinum-selling The Distance to Here (1999) turned +LIVE+ into an international powerhouse and moved the band from arenas into stadiums. +LIVE+ has been and remains today a global concert juggernaut. The band released an acclaimed five-song EP in 2018, LOCAL 717 , their first new music in over a decade.

Live reviews.

I follow all things to do with the band called LIVE because this Band is what the spirit of ROCK music is all about! The songs written have true life meaning and LIVE is able to capture all of it and share it in such a joyful ROCKED UP WAY with anyone who puts an ear to it!

Their Shows are always a BLAST cause everybody's singing and rockin' along Just like the band wants them all to do! I loved LIVE with Ed Kowalczyk as the frontman (but he's doing his solo thing now, which I also stay close to). So it's a new beginning for the rest of the original members (Chad Taylor, Chad Gracey and Patrick Dahlheimer) with their new frontman Chris Shinn to keep pressing forward for All things LIVE!

Chris Shinn is an AWESOME fit for this spot; not as a replacement for Ed (no one could ever replace Ed Kowalczyk) but for sure the right guy to be the frontman of what is LIVE now.

Anyway, everybody in LIVE and all their fans are all kinds of excited because LIVE is getting ready to release a new album with their new frontman Chris Shinn that's GONNA KICK ASS! Woohoo! LIVE ARE BACK!!

so, this was my 24th and last LIVE show. I have seen this band since they were just out of high school and in multiple venues throughout the last 25+ years. The energy level isnt there anymore and they are phoning it in. Playing 2 covers - while great renditions of Paint it Black and Losing My Religion are not what we came to see. They could have replaced those sons with any of the GREAT songs from their catalog and the show would have been better. In his day, Ed used to engage the audience in a high energy manner, for 1/2 the show he played with sunglasses on and was very distant. Forgetting the lyrics to an ALL TIME CLASSIC is unconscionable. The set list on this tour hasn't varied much at all, and certainly in the last month - causing me to suspect that backing tracks are in use, but who knows. So in summary, it's great to see the band back together, but they needed to play MUCH more (probably 5-7 songs more, without covers) and engage their adoring audience.

I have seen Live a handful of times over the past 24 years. I did enjoy their show last night although the sound wasn’t to me liking. The mix was muddy at times, and they had a second drummer, and guitar player for some strange reason. My guess is to sound more powerful, but I prefer them as a four piece. I found them more efficient with just the four members playing.

The surprise guest was Stephen Perkins from Jane’s Addiction. He sat in on a song and played superbly. He is such a phenomenal drummer. Overall, I enjoyed their set, but it was not anything to write home about. I was glad to see Ed Kowalzic back with the band. He seemed happy to be back, and the band seemed happy to have him there. 7/10

What an amazing show. We arrived a little late so it is hard to pass comment on the support band. The ? collective. But they were ok I guess.

When Live took to the stage was a definite change in atmosphere. Ed and the two Chads along with the other musicians. Pumped out the songs from the 25 year Old album Throwing copper. With Otter creek, shit town and lightening crashes to name but a few. They sounded just like they did when I sawoke them in Manchester in 1997. To round things off Ed K dI'd two acoustic songs and wow what a atmosphere. I alone rang out then it was like a secret prayer at the end. What a fantastic show loved every second of it.

Firstly the venue is awesome! What a great place for a concert! So fantastic to see the band back together and with such great energy! The boys are back and sounding better than ever!! Great to see that they were able to overcome their past troubles and get back the magic that makes them Live! Not many bands could do what they have done. Kudos to them as humans and the power of burying the hatchet! While the Throwing Copper tribute is great and they are having fun with the covers, I personally can't wait for the headlining tour so we can hear some new stuff and hopefully some songs they haven't done in a long time..

Still sounding great after 10 years away from London. I thought 'Losing my Religion' and 'Paint it Black' were odd choices given the Live's back catalogue and recent album, but I guess that's their choice. Not sure about Chad and Patrick's twin hat and sunglasses ZZ Top look either. They all still sound great so no need for gimmicks and covers.

Live was awesome! I had an expectation and hope that they would be "good" but they far exceeded my expectations! Excellent show, great musicians and the sound was awesome! Would definitely recommend seeing them even for a casual fan of the band or for people who remember hearing a couple of their songs even.

Going to see Live live never disappoints ... the night sky with all its secrets... Looking forward to something new even if the older material still feels like the first time hearing it.

THANK YOU infinitely for giving me the chance to share and experience such beautiful moments...

Live as always was incredible live. Do they call themselves live because they always sound live. A great mix of songs . Shame was they played before counting crows who totally stank. Used to love thier tunes but the lead just droned on and on and they played very few hits

Seanb47’s profile image

The show was superior! The integration of their new music with the old was seamless. My wife who is not a rock fan, is now a LIVE fan "forever". These guys so kicked it! The variety and strength of each bit of guitar work by each member sent me through the roof.

Ed Kowalczyk Announces Live Tour With New Guitarist

ed kowalczyk tour 2023

Live frontman Ed Kowalczyk recently took to his Instagram account and posted a selfie and in the caption he stated that dates for his shows will be announced soon and he is excited. Live with have a new guitarist on tour.

His caption read:

Hi! ⚡shows announcing soon ⚡ So exciting! 😁😁😁😁😁

Live are likely to return after internal issues

Live are apparently ready to move forward after some recent internal drama within the band had halted their progress. Singer Ed Kowalczyk had returned to the group in 2016, but their reunion efforts had stalled of late, with the singer revealing the internal strife. But according to the vocalist, he now has a controlling interest in the band, and one of the group’s longtime members has been fired.

Previously, posting on Instagram, Kowalczyk was seemingly answering a fan who had asked why he had not released new solo music as he had recently been working on some music. “ I would love to perform – but it’s not possible in the current situation with the band,” stated the singer, before adding, “The three other original members are not speaking to each other – and I am stuck in the middle – and if I try to go solo, there is a good chance they will sue me again – so I have to do what’s best for me and my family and try to stay out of litigation by not performing in public at all.”

The singer continued, “ Hopefully things change, but until then I have to lay low.”

We will now have to wait and see what he has in store for the fans.

Iconic ‘90s rock bands coming to Alabama, celebrating 30th anniversary of hit albums

Two powerhouse ‘90s rock bands are going on tour in summer 2024, celebrating the 30th anniversary of albums that cemented their fame.

Live, led by Ed Kowalczyk , and Stone Temple Pilots , now fronted by Jeff Gutt , are set to perform on Aug. 27 at Oak Mountain Amphitheatre in Pelham. The Alabama date is part of a 19-city “Jubilee Tour” that points to milestones for “Throwing Copper,” Live’s No. 1 record from 1994, and “Purple,” a chart-topper for STP that same year.

Tickets for the Pelham show go on sale Friday, March 22, at 10 a.m. CT via Ticketmaster/Live Nation , after a round of pre-sales. Prices are $49.50, $59.50, $79.50 and $99.50, plus service charges, according to promoter Live Nation. Several pre-sales are planned, starting on Tuesday at 10 a.m. CT and running through Thursday, March 21, at 10 p.m. CT, according to the Ticketmaster/Live Nation listing.

Soul Asylum will be the opening act on the tour; Live and Stone Temple Pilots will alternate for the closing spot on the lineup. Live is set to close at Oak Mountain, according to a press release from Live Nation.

Right now, Pelham is the only Alabama stop on the tour, but the bands are scheduled to perform in Southern cities such as Rogers, Arkansas (Aug. 24, Walmart Arkansas Music Pavilion ); Jacksonville, Florida (Aug. 30, Daily’s Place ); and Alpharetta, Georgia (Aug. 31, Ameris Bank Amphitheatre ).

Live has nine studio albums to its credit, 1989-present. The band is best known, however, for “Throwing Copper,” produced by Jerry Harrison of the Talking Heads. The multi-platinum album included hit singles such as “Lightning Crashes,” “Selling the Drama,” “I Alone” and “All Over You.”

Kowalczyk, a singer, songwriter and guitarist, is a founding member of Live and its longtime prime mover. He’s the only original member currently touring with Live, and has been the band’s frontman for most of its history, which dates back to 1984.

Stone Temple Pilots

Stone Temple Pilots have eight studio albums to their credit, 1992-present, and hits such as “Plush,” “Creep,” “Vasoline,” “Interstate Love Song,” “Big Empty,” “Big Bang Baby” and “Trippin’ on a Hole in a Paper Heart.” After breaking through with the 1992 album “Core,” STP followed with “Purple,” a sophomore blockbuster that included the monster hit “Plush.” The song won several awards, including a 1994 Grammy for Best Hard Rock Performance.

Frontman Scott Weiland , a electrifying and unpredictable performer, founded Stone Temple Pilots in 1989 with guitarist Dean DeLeo, bassist Robert DeLeo and drummer Eric Kretz. Weiland helped to bring STP to fame but also had a checkered history with the band. He famously struggled with drug addiction, and this contributed to STP calling it quits in 2003. The band reunited in 2008, with Weiland at the microphone, and split with him in 2013. (Weiland died in 2015 at age 48.)

Chester Bennington of Linkin Park replaced Weiland as the lead singer of STP, 2013-2015, and Jeff Gutt of Dry Cell took over as frontman in 2017. Gutt can be heard on two STP albums, 2018′s “Stone Temple Pilots” and 2020′s “Perdida.” Three original members of Stone Temple Pilots remain with the band, and will be on the tour this year with Gutt.

Live and Stone Temple Pilots both have strong fan bases in Alabama. Stone Temple Pilots has appeared at least four times at Oak Mountain Amphitheatre, with dates there 1997-2018. STP also played at the Schaeffer Eye Center Crawfish Boil in Birmingham in 2011. Live’s Kowalczyk played a solo date at Alabaster CityFest in 2013.

CLOSURE IN MOSCOW

Mew on september tour.

MEW’s Visuals Australian Tour , due to land in September and presented by  Bird’s Robe  and  The Music , just got even more awesome. Melbourne’s progressive rock powerhouses with a penchant for creating iconic melodies,  Closure in Moscow , are today joining the tour for all dates.

The tour hits Brisbane ( September 10 at The Triffid ), Sydney ( September 11 at Manning Bar ) and Melbourne ( September 12 at Max Watts ), but for the first time ever, MEW will be venturing to Perth ( September 13 at Capitol ). It will also mark Closure in Moscow ‘s first Perth show in over four years.

In 2017, the band are deep into pre-production for their much anticipated third album and this September they will join prog-pop legends  MEW  for four exclusive shows in Brisbane, Sydney, Melbourne and Perth. Closure in Moscow will be premiering new material live for the first time!

MEW  formed as a quartet in late 1994 and following their debut ‘A Triumph for Man’ in 1997, they quickly established cult status. Their commercial break-through came in 2003 with the release of “Frengers” – showcasing their unique and quirky approach to crafting classic pop melodies. The record saw them tour with R.E.M. before continuing with 2005’s ‘And The Glass Handed Kites’ .  Their 2009 opus ‘No More Stories Are Told Today, I’m Sorry They Washed Away // No More Stories, The World is Grey, I’m Tired, Let’s Wash Away’ continued their ever expansive musical backdrop. Their record “+-“ saw them reach the heights of indie-rock stardom, headlining London’s Roundhouse and performing at festivals like  Roskilde ,  Pukkelpop  and  Summer Sonic  and one of the band’s biggest fans, Kiwi songstress  KIMBRA , brought further buzz to the band when she featured on tracks ‘The Night Believer’ and ‘Water Slides.’
