Full Size Run is Sole Collector’s weekly sneaker talk and debate show featuring co-hosts Brendan Dunne, Matt Welty, and Trinidad James, and this week they’re joined by Filipino-American comedian Jo Koy on the heels of his new Netflix special, Comin’ in Hot , to talk about why Filipinos are obsessed with sneakers, why he loves Air Jordans, and he roasts Michael Jordan’s worst outfits.

Jo Koy’s teenage son would be understandably embarrassed to hear how his confusion about puberty is served up in this comedy special, shot in Hawaii. (Anticipating the kid’s reaction, Koy incorporates that into his act as well: “Does everything have to be a joke, dad? Come on, seriously.”) But Koy is an equal-opportunity mortifier, and everyone in his orbit is a target — including the audience.

Jo Koy Performs First Stand-Up Set Since Bombing at the Golden Globes, Mocks ‘Soft’ Celeb Crowd: ‘Can We F—ing Laugh at Ourselves?’

  • Oops! Something went wrong. Please try again later. More content below

On an icy, 19-degree night in St. Louis, comedian Jo Koy was nowhere to be found.

Amid a Midwestern snowstorm, his flight from Los Angeles had to make an emergency landing in Kansas City. While waiting for the comic to arrive, a screen read: “No heckling. You are interrupting the show for everyone. Just don’t do it. Hecklers will be removed from the venue.”

Greta Gerwig Responds to Jo Koy's Golden Globes Joke About Barbie's 'Big Boobies' After It Was Slammed as Sexist: 'Well, He's Not Wrong'

Twenty-five minutes after the 8pm start time for his “Joy Koy World Tour,” the 3,100-seat Stifel Theatre announced, “Ladies and gentlemen, thank you for your patience. We are dealing with some inclement weather. The artist will be arriving shortly.” At 9pm, the Tacoma, WA native, Koy, 52, came onstage and was met with thunderous applause of support and a standing ovation.

“Holy shit, right?,” said Koy of the applause. “This big hug that you gave me is all I need, swear to god. Fucking whirlwind, goddamn.”

Alluding to his disastrous Golden Globes hosting gig (and the fallout ), he said, “Lot a marshmallows, man. They’re delicious, but goddamn, they’re soft. I just come from a different time. I see the changes that are happening. I get it, but goddamn, can we fucking laugh at ourselves?” The audience roared with applause, and someone from the audience yelled, “Fuck ‘em!”

Koy said, “I got a feeling none of you motherfuckers watched it, and I’m kinda happy. Oh my god. It feels good to live in this country. We get to say what we want to say. Don’t be apologetic about it at all. Be able to…speak your mind.”

It’s Koy’s speaking his mind that drew the crowd on the cold January night. Amy Thebeau, 45, came from Potosi, MO, to see the show with her cousin, Kayla Weingartner, 40, who came from Sikeston, MO. “We were worried about the ice, but we’re so happy to be here,” said Thebeau. It was their first time seeing Koy live. Thebeau posted on Facebook a few months ago asking if anyone wanted to go to the show with her. And her cousin Kayla commented, “Yes!”

Koy’s relatability is why Thebeau wanted to come to his show. “When you grow up poor in a big family,” she says, “it’s easy to relate to his comedy. It’s what you’re used to—those big family dynamics.” Weingartner says her mother-in-law is “just like Jo’s mom and the stuff she says…I was really sad that him and Chelsea [Handler] broke up.”

After vaguely addressing his hosting the Golden Globes––while never naming the awards ceremony outright––the comic talked about his long journey to make it to the night’s standup show. “We Uber-ed here. We fuckin’ Uber-ed here! It was four and a half hours.” Koy and his team had to make an emergency landing in Kansas City, flying from Los Angeles. “My whole crew, none of them brought parkas. Me? I brought two. You think the snow is CGI? It’s real snow motherfucker. We’re inside of a goddamn snow globe! We should be dead right now––all of us. If not by the plane, then by the snow,” he said, miming slipping on a patch of ice.

Koy joked, “The weather is better in Hollywood, but I’m happy to be in this blizzard. When it rains, it pours.” Dressed in head-to-toe black in a hoodie, black pants, and white sneakers, Koy said, “I have to ask this question, and it’s a serious question: Why do you guys live here? It’s fucking cold! This place should be empty!”

Koy riffed on everything from the weather to cell phones to the military and getting older. He spoke about cultural sensitivity, and oversensitivity –– and its impact. “Here in St. Louis, [you’ve got] people that listen to you, understand you, and understand we’re not all out to attack each other. It’s stupid in LA.” During the show, while speaking with an audience member, Koy replied to someone, “You want me to guess what ethnicity you are? No! I already got in trouble this week!” he laughed.

Clearly enjoying himself, Koy said, “Oh God, this is fun.” The audience thundered with applause. “I haven’t laughed in four days. I’m so happy. You guys make me so happy.”

He shared anecdotes from his childhood, including a stolen Michael Jackson album, the fights his brother would get into, and stories about his stepfather Fred. “Fred is 6’4 from West Virginia. This motherfucker used to eat coal when he was five!”

Koy shared onstage that his stepfather recently died. “Rest in peace. He just passed.” Koy reflected on the importance of taking risks. “Everybody goes through shit. Everybody has a fucked up family. We’re all fucked up. No one’s perfect.” Koy emphasized the importance of failure, saying, “You’re allowed to fail! Fail as much as you can. Just make sure you get the fuck back up,” he said to applause. “Fuck up. Risk. Take a risk. Without any risk, you’re never gonna know if anything’s possible. I’m back, motherfuckers. Take that risk.”

At the show’s end, Koy passed out merch hats to several audience members. “This has been a fun show, you guys. I needed it. This is therapy. You guys, I love you. Thank you so much.”

Koy’s new special comes out on Netflix this year. The “Joy Koy World Tour” runs through May and ends on May 26, 2024, in Abu Dhabi, UAE.

Jo Koy's Tour Has Hundreds of Unsold Tickets

C omedian Jo Koy could be feeling the effects of his 2024 Golden Globes jokes, which many have said made for awkward viewing, as his January tour dates fail to sell out.

The 81st Golden Globes took place on January 7, and numerous celebrities gathered to celebrate the industry and hopefully take home an award. A full list of winners can be seen here .

Like every year, the ceremony is hosted by a well-known celebrity or celebrity duo, and this year, it was funnyman Koy's turn.

However, anyone who viewed will have noticed that some of his jokes fell flat and failed to impress the live audience, with the star receiving backlash online .

His jovial jabs took a shot at stars such as an unimpressed Taylor Swift and at the popular film Barbie , with social media becoming a hub of chatter about his jokes and hosting abilities.

Koy joked about Oppenheimer and Barbie competing and how the former was based on a "721-page, Pulitzer Prize-winning book" and how the latter was just based on a "plastic doll with big boobies." He also got Swifties' backs up with remarks about the NFL focusing too much on Taylor Swift when she supports Travis Kelce at a game. His speech can be read in full here.

So now the dust of the awards is starting to settle, did his time in the coveted award host role help his current tour?

Koy started his world tour in January 2023, with multiple dates added through 2024.

He has sold out venues before, and with several Netflix shows under his belt, some may think it would be hard to get a ticket for his 2024 tour dates.

Koy broke a record in 2017 for the most tickets sold by a single artist of 23,000 tickets and 11 sold-out shows at The Neal S. Blaisdell Concert Hall in Honolulu, according to Off The Kerb. CBC also reported that he broke the record at Winnipeg's Club Regent Event Centre in 2018 with the Break the Mold tour for four sold-old shows.

However, Ticketmaster shows that there are still plenty of opportunities to see the comedian this month, with empty seats at all seven of his January shows. His website also shows that only his February 17 show in Los Angeles at the Kia Forum has been sold out, with another show added due to demand. He has 51 shows currently advertised for this year on his website.

Newsweek has looked at tickets available on Ticketmaster for January, and as the dates progress, more and more seats are available. This could be due to the negative feedback from his Golden Globes performances, among other factors.

Newsweek has reached out to Jo Koy's publicist and Ticketmaster via email for comment.

The fact that there are still plenty of tickets on sale goes against what happened to Chris Rock and his stand-up show after the famous 2022 Oscars . While hosting the awards, Rock commented about Jada Pinkett Smith 's appearance, prompting Will Smith to get out of his seat, walk onto the stage, and smack the comedian.

Rock's first gig after the Oscars sold out , but Koy's first performance after the Golden Globes on January 12 at St. Louis' Stifel Theatre still has tickets. The venue can hold 3,100 people, and when this article was published, there were around 50 tickets left.

Other available tickets in January range from only 33 at the 2,308 capacity The Orpheum Theatre Memphis venue on January 13, to thousands of empty seats in Miami at Kaseya Center on January 20. This venue is a 20,000-seat multipurpose sports and entertainment arena, and the Ticketmaster website shows 22 seating sections, all advertised as having 100+ tickets left, as well as multiple other sections with free seats.

Numerous factors have to be taken into consideration, such as last-minute ticket purchases, geographical location, and venue size, but it is clear Koy has yet to benefit from the same level of ticket sales as Rock did.

Koy is still a popular topic online with many social media users not a fan.

Sharing a collage of celebrities looking uncomfortable, a user on X, formerly Twitter , said: "Never invite Jo Koy to one of these again please. So, so awful."

Another said: "Jo Koy did NOT understand the assignment. Reactions to him hosting at the #GoldenGlobes2024 were brutal. I got second-hand embarrassment from watching."

A third added: "Jo Koy career is finally over we used to pray for times like this."
