William Randolph Hearst started to build a fabulous estate on his ranchland overlooking the village of San Simeon in 1919. He called the estate "La Cuesta Encantada" - Spanish for The Enchanted Hill. By 1947, the hilltop complex included a twin-towered main building, three sumptuous guesthouses, and 127 acres of terraced gardens, fountains, and pools.

The fanciful Gothic Study is the centerpiece of Hearst's private suite on the third floor of "Casa Grande" - the main building of the hilltop estate at San Simeon. He previewed his newspapers every night here before printing. The concrete arches were decorated by Camille Solon in 1934-35, but the historic Spanish ceiling dates from the early 1400s.

A Guide to California’s Hearst Castle Mansion (+ Best Tours)

Nestled in a prime San Simeon location on a hill overlooking the Pacific Ocean is Hearst Castle Mansion. What is this Hearst Castle in California all about? It’s sadly not operating as a luxurious lodging where you can feel like an elegant guest in for the night. However, it is open to the public in the form of a museum, giving each of us a chance to marvel at its incredible exteriors and even more incredible interiors for a couple hours—or a full day!—on guided tours taking you through its most impressive rooms and other luxuries on the property, namely the pools and the gardens.

A Guide to California’s Hearst Castle Mansion Including the Best Tours to Take

History/about.

The Hearst Castle in California is a mansion that has been designed as a National Historic Landmark. It was built and designed for one William Randolph Hearst by the architect Julia Morgan, between the years of 1919 and 1947. Today it operates as a historic monument and a museum of sorts, offering a variety of tours, including one focused around Julia Morgan, for the 750,000 or so visitors that the castle attracts annually.

Interior Highlights of Hearst Castle

Hearst Castle in general is filled with gorgeous interior choices, ranging across its 165 rooms. Inside the castle you’ll find William Randolph Hearst’s personal art collection on display, which is perhaps what Hearst Castle Mansion is most famous for. Of the rooms, one of the most notable ones is the gorgeous Gothic Study, which has an interior resembling somewhat what you’d expect the insides of a gothic church to look like, including its painted arches – definitely not a bad spot to have held an important business meeting or a few hours of leisurely reading time in!

The Gardens at Hearst Castle

On the castle grounds you will also find a big and elegant garden that you’re allowed to explore freely. It’s located on a hill from where it overlooks the Pacific Ocean. You’ll also get to take in the castle exteriors and the garden pool during your walk in nature.

Hearst Castle Pools

There are two pools in Hearst Castle, both of which have been designed with as much elegant detail as everything else in the mansion. Outdoors, right in the garden, you will find ‘Neptune Pool’, which has received its name from the sculptures of Neptune decorating it. Indoors you’ll find the beautifully mosaic tiled ‘Roman Pool’, complete with statues of Roman gods, goddesses and other heroes, with careful detail taken place when designing the pool so as to give it a likeness to a pool from ancient Roman time. As of the summer of 2019, it has been possible for the public to swim in these pools, but only during special pool nights for which you need to have an advance ticket.

The Best Hearst Castle Tours

There are multiple tour options for you to choose from when it comes to visiting Hearst Castle, each offering their own charm points. As the castle grounds are large enough that it’s rather impossible to see everything in a day, you’ll want to take good care about booking the tour that’s most suitable for you and a highly regarded one in general. Here are some of the best Hearst Castle Tours:

Grand Rooms Tour: This is a tour that Hearst Castle personally recommends for first-time visitors. It focuses on showing you the lavish social rooms located in Casa Grande, the largest house on the Hearst Castle property, but will also take you through several other important locations of Hearst Castle, finalizing with some home videos from Mr. Hearst himself. In general this tour has the fewest amount of stairs to climb up or down, and there is an accessible version of this tour available as well . {Book Here}

Upstairs Suites Tour: If your main point of interest with Hearst Castle is to see how the Hearst family and their guests, often incredibly famous ones, lived while in the castle, this is an excellent tour to take. As it focuses on the upper floors of Casa Grande, there will be quite a few staircases to ascend and descend, which may be tough, but will also give you the feeling as if you are the elegant guest at this castle. {Book Here}

Evening Tour: When you time your Hearst Castle visit to spring or fall, you may be inclined to tackle the evening tour. It’s a lengthier tour than the Grand Rooms Tour, although mostly visiting the same parts and rooms of the castle. The extraordinariness of this tour comes from the fact the staff will be dressed in attire from 1930s, silently making their way from room to room, as part of a Living History Program. {Book Here}

Julia Morgan Tour: This tour takes a deep dive into the career and life of Julia Morgan, the woman behind the castle. You’ll not only get to see photographic displays and other personal items, but also areas of the castle that are not often shown on the other tours. {Book Here}

Designing the Dream Tour: If architecture and interior design specifically interest you, this might indeed be the dream tour for you. On this 75 minute tour you’ll learn a whole lot about how the Hearst Castle came to be. Considering that it took three decades to build the castle and even so it never actually was fully finished, a bunch of cool stuff can be learned by taking this tour!   {Book Here}

Location/Planning Your Trip

Hearst Castle is located on a hill in the San Simeon region of Central California, along the California Highway 1 and quite near to Big Sur, and is relatively easy to get to. From both San Francisco and Los Angeles, it’s a 4 to 5 hour drive to get there. There are a variety of nice lodgings around the San Simeon area, so to save yourself from hurrying around, perhaps you’d like to book one for the night?

If you happen to get hungry during your tour of Hearst Castle, there are two café-like eateries from where you can get a fix of coffee and some simple foods like sandwiches in. During peak summer season, it’s also possible to enjoy meals at Camp Hill BBQ, which is located in the courtyard.

Before or after your adventure at Hearst Castle, do take the time to discover San Simeon beyond. Its beaches are some of the most beautiful in California, there’s an old light station to go take a look at and there are elephant seals migrating to the area every year!

8 Castles to Visit in California

tourist mansion in california

California might not come to mind as a place with many castles, but The Golden State offers some beautiful, stately buildings that resemble castles and/or include "castle" in their names. Though none of them were built in the middle ages, these castles still wow and amaze with their beautiful builds and historic feels. From theme park castles to people's dream renovations, here are some of California's most amazing castles.

Castello di Amorosa

Castello di Amorosa , in Napa Valley, was created by winemaker Dario Sattui. It’s a meticulously recreated medieval Italian castle. Although his original intent was modest, the result is not. Sattui’s castle covers 121,000 square feet. It has 107 rooms with four separate levels underground and four levels above.

This castle really does feel like a real castle in Italy. It has a moat and a drawbridge, high walls, and towers. In the center is a courtyard. There’s a church, stables and there’s even a torture chamber in the dungeon.

Castello makes some pretty nice wines, too. And they throw the best parties in all of wine country.

Hearst Castle

At his peak, newspaper publisher William Randolph Hearst was worth was $30 billion. In modern dollars, that would put him atop the list of the world’s richest people, with about 6 times more money than his nearest rival. It’s no wonder he could build an enormous house in a remote location, engage one of the era’s most sought-after architects and fill it with art treasures gathered from Europe.

Hearst told architect Julia Morgan he wanted to build a “little something,” on the hill, but by the time he was done, it was far from little. Hearst Castle sprawls over 68,500 square feet and contains 38 bedrooms. Like a proper castle, it’s set on a hilltop. But instead of a moat, it has swimming pools, two of them: The outdoor Neptune Pool (345,000 gallons) and the indoor Roman Pool (205,000 gallons).

Fortunately for those of us who can only gawk at what a really rich man can create, the castle is now a California state park and open to visitors.

Scotty's Castle

If it were anywhere else but Death Valley , this castle would probably have a different name. In fact, the biggest thing in the story of this desert oasis is the personality of Death Valley Scotty.

What’s even more curious is that Scotty didn’t even own the place, he just talked his friend Albert Mussey Johnson into building it. In the middle of the hottest place on Planet Earth.

According to the National Park Service’s history of the place, this is what Death Valley Scotty had to say about it: “The Hall of Fame is going up. We're building a Castle that will last at least a thousand years. As long as there are men on earth, likely, these walls will stand here."

So far, Scotty was right. You can tour Scotty’s Castle and find out more about its story when you visit Death Valley.

Sleeping Beauty Castle

This castle at Disneyland might have been even grander, but Walt Disney worried that anything larger would overwhelm his guests. Sleeping Beauty’s Castle is based on Neuschwanstein Castle in Bavaria, Germany which was built in the late 1800s.

It’s only 77 feet (23 m) tall, but it looks bigger. Things get progressively smaller than they should all the way up to the turrets, making you think they’re further away.

This castle has a moat and a drawbridge. The bridge has been lowered only twice: On opening day in 1955, and again to unveil newly remodeled Fantasyland in 1983. And there's a hidden attraction inside it.

The Disney family coat of arms is above the castle entrance.

Magic Castle

It looks more like a Victorian-style house than a typical “castle,” and frankly, the magic is the big deal here, not the building it sits in.

The Magic Castle, located in Los Angeles, is first and foremost a private club for card-carrying magicians. If you can swing an invitation - or if you stay at the nearby Magic Castle Hotel, you can enjoy dinner and a magic show.

Sam's Castle

What do you do after an earthquake in San Francisco? If you’re attorney Henry Harrison McCloskey in 1906, you build a castle in nearby Pacifica.

McCloskey wanted a home that was earthquake resistant and fireproof. Architect Charles MacDougal designed a gray stone structure with details that resembled a stereotypical castle.

So why is it called Sam’s Castle? In 1959, Sam Mazza bought the house, which was showing serious signs of decay. A painting and interior decorating contractor, he restored it and filled it an eclectic collection of objects d’art. Some might call them “kitschy.” Oddly, Sam never lived there, but he did use it for parties.

Since Mazza’s death, the castle is run by the Sam Mazza Foundation and is open for tours.

Rubel Castle

If you're looking to step back into medieval times, plan a trip to Rubel Castle. Though it wasn't constructed until centuries after the Middle Ages, the look and feel of the grounds make it seem like you're in that period. This grand abode took Michael Rubel, who the building is named after, and his farmhands over 25 years to build.

Today, people filter in from all over the world to visit this castle which has earned its place on the National Register of Historic Places. It's even had some very notable guests, including Prince Philip and former president Dwight D. Eisenhower.

Lobo Castle

What once started as a regular, ranch-style log cabin is now a fairytale castle fit for any prince or princess. Lobo Castle is located in Lobo Canyon and sits on two and a half acres of property. It underwent renovations in 1999 and was finished in 2007. Natural stone was taken from the canyon and was used to build up the castle. The property features a guest tower and even a dungeon.

The castle is open for rental opportunities year-round and is a hotspot for engagement shoots. It has also appeared on television, gracing the screen on networks including MTV and The Food Network.

The individuals who constructed these palaces and estates possessed imaginations as grand as the structures themselves; as you read this article, you will venture into a far more majestic and awe-inspiring land .

In California, castles and other castle-like places created by imaginative people allow visitors to have fun, go on thrilling adventures, and learn about the area’s history.

French architect Jean Egasse constructed his private residence and office at Crescent Bay Castle in 1926, now a historical landmark .

He used native rock, clinker brick, and big timbers to build an unbelievable structure that served as his workplace and a comfortable home for his family during the height of the “Storybook” era.

Moreover, he spent the final decade developing iconic structures in Laguna and started his career, making many creations fundamental to their essence.

When visiting the Cresent Bay Castle, you can tour the whole place or watch the sunset since their view offers the best, and they also have merchandises to choose from.

2. Pyne Castle (Normandy Revival Style)

The Normandy Revival-style Pyne Castle, built by Walter Estel Pyne just a few kilometers north of central Laguna Beach, is currently for sale for the first time in 40 years.

Since the finding of oil on his farming property, quirky and thrifty businessman Pyne has been able to build the 62-room home he dubbed Broadview Villa on 100 acres.

Built between 1927 and 1935, it features pointy and softly arched windows , Gothic architectural accents, and two slightly pitched turrets reminiscent of British architecture.

After Pyne died in 1945, the house went through various hands, and Peter Young, a builder, purchased the property in 1960 and transformed it into apartments.

When Richard Massen and Roland Greene bought it in 1971, it had passed through hands twice; however, the castle has undergone extensive remodeling throughout the years, and several areas no longer fit in with the original design.

Address: 770 Hillcrest Dr #13, Laguna Beach, CA 92651, United States

3. Albion Castle (Once Albion Brewery)

tourist mansion in california

San Francisco, California, was home to the Albion Brewery between 1875 and its closure in 1919.

At 881 Innes Avenue, the historic brewery is now home to Hunters Point Springs, and the building and its surrounding grounds were assigned as a San Francisco Landmark on April 5, 1974.

The space is private and has been used for gatherings or special occasions.

Drake also adopted the historical name “Albion” for Britain upon his arrival in what is currently Point Reyes, which was initially called Nova Albion.

The structure, located on Hunter’s Point Ridge between Innes Avenue and Griffith Street, was constructed in 1870 to serve as the site of his brewery.

Also, this area might have once been home to an Ohlone community, and he constructed the structure and created the two chambers, each measuring 200 feet in length, by hand.

1. hearst castle (la cuesta encantada).

Hearst Castle is a medieval castle in San Simeon on the Central Coast of California, and its official name is La Cuesta Encantada.

The creation mogul William Randolph Hearst and his designer Julia Morgan designed and constructed the castle between 1919 and 1947.

Hearst’s father, George, bought the first portion of the 40,000-acre property in 1865, now the eventual site of Hearst Castle, known as Camp Hill, and was utilized for family camping holidays.

In 1919, William Randolph acquired a fortune and properties, including the San Simeon property, worth about $11,000,000, and he spent his wealth expanding his multimedia empire, which included periodicals, newspapers, and broadcasting stations, and the money he made from them allowed him to construct and collect throughout his life .

Moreover, in the months following Phoebe Hearst’s death, he authorized Morgan to construct the forerunner to the current castle.

Now, the Castle at San Simeon is her most famous masterpiece, resulting from twenty years of close partnership with Hearst.

Address: 750 Hearst Castle Rd, San Simeon, CA 93452, United States

Castles in Pacifica & Albany, California

1. sam’s castle (unique antiques & art).

tourist mansion in california

Henry Harrison McCloskey, the granddad of Congressman Pete McCloskey, constructed Sam’s Castle in San Francisco in 1908 after seeing pictures of the castle his wife Emily had grown up in during a trip to Scotland.

After the 1906 San Francisco earthquake badly wrecked the house he owned, McCloskey built the seaside castle as a refuge and after over 100 years of use as a speakeasy, an illegal abortion facility, a nightclub, and a Coast Guard military building during World War II, the castle became available for sale.

It was re-established in 1959 by the late Sam Mazza, a performing arts painter for 20th Century Fox, and the castle now houses unique pieces of antiques and art acquired by Mazza.

Thanks to the generosity of the Sam Mazza Foundation, the Pacifica Historical Society can offer visits to the castle on occasion.

Address: 900 Mirador Terrace, Pacifica, CA 94044, United States

2. Mad Marc’s Castle (Panoramic Bay Area Views)

Constructed by handmade from salvaged materials like steel rebar, concrete, and plaster, Mad Mark’s Castle sits above the Albany Bulb in San Francisco Bay and boasts a breathtaking panorama of the city and the Golden Gate Bridge.

A beautiful work of one-person artwork and the conclusion of Mark’s life’s work, the Bulb was finished in 2000 and is currently used as a constantly shifting painting canvas by the countless painters who haunt the building.

Also, the castle’s parking lot is opposite the racetrack and at the end of Marin Street in Albany.

If you are still getting familiar with the area, Albany is the city that lies just north of Berkeley, or if ever you get lost, you can track the place using google maps.

Castles in Glendora & Modesto, California

1. rubel castle (folk art masterpiece).

tourist mansion in california

In the Glendora foothills, Rubel Castle is a stunning example of traditional design suited for those who love historical art.

Michael Rubel and his “farmhands” laboriously assembled it by hand over many years, and the river rock, materials that can be recycled, and antiques from Glendora’s historic farming and economic eras that went into its stone masonry were all sourced locally.

In the setting of California’s folk art surroundings, Michael’s Rubel Castle is a groundbreaking masterpiece due to his inventive use of both cultural and natural resources.

It’s a unique historical artifact that helps to illustrate how the citrus trade shaped the region in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

Located next to Route 66, this 26-year-long construction took place, and at the tender age of eighteen, Michael Rubel purchased a packing house to construct the castle of his dreams.

Address: 844 N Live Oak Ave, Glendora, CA 91741, United States

2. Hawke Castle (Modesto Landmark)

tourist mansion in california

Created in 1929 in the traditional Norman design, the Hawke Castle is a notable Modesto, California, house.

Mr. Edward Hawke, director of the J. C. Penney shop in Modesto, lived there, and her wife leased the house to engineer Al Goldschmidt after her husband passed away.

Bertha, the wife of Dr. Burnett Tonge, arrived next as the owner, and the Thayer Family Trust is the following owner of the residence.

The home boasts a finished basement and loft, six bedrooms, and four bathrooms in a two-story central section and twin towers on either side.

Moreover, the more prominent tower features a spiral staircase with diamond-shaped panes of leaded glass reminiscent of Gothic architecture.

The towers are topped with conical slate roofs, and the hipped main roof is high and composed of slate-colored stone.

At the very pinnacle of the carport roof sits a bronze peacock, and a modest stone-lined entrance leads to a covered door with a circular head that is set into the wall.

Castles in Ben Lomond & Calistoga, California

1. howden castle (scottish design).

tourist mansion in california

Ben Lomond, California, is home to the Howden Castle, which can be found on Highway 9, and the building was not finished until 1932, having first broken ground in 1927.

Robert Howden was the one who erected it, and he based its design on that of Scottish castles because that was where he was born.

The stones that made up the exterior walls of the ancient castle foundation were selected and laid by hand.

Also, the openings of the castle were imprinted with poems and scenes written by Scottish poets Sir Walter Scott and Robert Burns.

Howard Sullivan, a physician who practiced in Santa Cruz, and his wife owned the castle from 1939 until 1946.

In 1946, George and Ivy Weatherley bought the property, and after they moved in, they extended the existing structure.

Mrs. Weatherley served as an overview guide at the castle for nearly two decades, and it is still a popular destination for vacationers .

The National Park Service then decided in 1979 that it met the requirements to be included in the National Register of Historic Places.

2. Castello di Amorosa (Tuscan Castle Vineyard)

Castello di Amorosa, known as the Castle of Love, is a Tuscan castle vineyard in the Napa Valley that is genuinely designed to look like it was built in the 14th century.

Tourists can only enter if they have made a taste or tour appointment, and every one of their one-of-a-kind experiences comes with a complimentary tasting of five wines selected from their vast wine menu.

If you’d instead try something non-alcoholic, ask your waitress about their world-famous Muscat grape juice and exclusive tasting while seated.

Enjoy sampling five wines selected from their comprehensive wine menu, including their reserves and the alcohol-free Muscat grape juice.

You also have unrestricted access throughout the castle’s two primary levels, allowing you to wander around the structure at your own pace.

1. vikingsholm (scandinavian design).

tourist mansion in california

After purchasing the land in 1892, the Armstrong family, headed by William Henry, spent more than three decades making the cabins their primary summer retreat.

Mrs. Lora Josephine Knight purchased the Armstrong property in 1928, intending to construct a holiday residence there.

She had traveled extensively in Scandinavia and found Emerald Bay reminiscent of the fjords she had visited there.

Moreover, she hired her Swedish designer nephew Lennart Palme to create the house, and in the late fall of 1929, Vikingsholm was finally finished.

Then, Nevada rancher Lawrence Holland purchased the property and sold it to a California lumber merchant named Harvey West, who lived in Placerville.

Mr. West, a prominent benefactor, bargained with the State of California at the beginning of the 1950s, offering to give away the land and Vikingsholm free and clear in exchange for half the appraised initial worth of the site.

The state agreed to these requirements and purchased the home and surrounding land in 1953.

Regarding Scandinavian design in the United States, Vikingsholm is among the best, and it is currently a section of Emerald Bay State Park known as the Harvey West Unit.

Those who wish to visit this stunning setting can do so at any time of the year; the home is open for visits throughout the summertime.

2. The Julia Morgan House (Mediterranean Mansion)

tourist mansion in california

Julia Morgan, the first female architect in California, built the Julia Morgan House, a classic Mediterranean mansion in Sacramento’s Elmhurst district.

After Charles Goethe’s passing in 1966, he left the house to Sacramento State University, which has since been restored as part of the National Register of Historic Places.

Charles Goethe commissioned Julia Morgan to develop the home’s blueprints in 1918.

After Goethe passed away in 1966, he left his home, library, documents, and money to California State University, Sacramento.

Since then, it has been cared for by University Enterprises, Inc, which welcomes visitors and opens every weekday at 9 in the morning.

The house is also open for catering services and hosting celebrations, but you have to contact them because there are specific guidelines to be followed.

Castles in Death Valley & Riverside, California

1. scotty’s castle (roaring ’20s getaway).

tourist mansion in california

The Death Valley Ranch, or “Scotty’s Castle” as it’s popularly referred to, is a glimpse into the lifestyle and eras of the Roaring ’20s and Depression ’30s and is located in the lush sanctuary of Grapevine Canyon in the remote northern Death Valley.

It has served as the hideaway of an individual of mystery, the weekend getaway of a wealthy matron, and the engineer’s ideal home.

Albert Mussey Johnson constructed the home for his wife, Bessie, to use during their vacations.

Walter Scott, frequently called “Death Valley Scotty,” fooled the locals into thinking he constructed the castle with profits from his hidden mines.

Scotty was not only a friend but also unfathomable, a rancher, and an entertainment.

Albert had the ideas and the capital, but a dream united two guys who couldn’t have been more different in appearance, upbringing, or outlook on life.

Address: 123 Scotty’s Castle Rd, California, United States

2. Castle Park (Roller Coasters & Dark Ride)

Riverside, California, is home to Castle Park, previously called Castle Amusement Park , a 25-acre theme park and community entertainment center.

The area has 22 rides, featuring two roller coasters with different lengths; both offer the same thrills, a miniature golf course for those sports enthusiasts, and a medieval “castle” motif.

Also, the arcade and the park’s lone dark ride, Ghost Blasters, an interactive experience built by Sally Corporation and discovered at other North American amusement parks, are in the main “castle” styled building.

Bud Hurlbut, who also created rides at Knott’s Berry Farm , was responsible for the park’s concept, construction, and operation.

Palace Entertainment is Castle Park’s current owner and operator, which opens at 1 pm and closes at 11 pm; you can also check out their website for openings and special occasions.

Castles in Pasadena & Lake Arrowhead, California

1. castle green (hidden pasadena gem).

If you are looking for a special place to visit, you have found Castle Green, the hidden gem .

This mysterious and beautiful place, where modernity and antiquity mingle, makes the perfect location for your gathering, offering a stunning stage for grand and small events, conventional and out of the ordinary.

The Castle Green, a Pasadena landmark since its construction in 1898, was originally an addition to the city’s more well-known Hotel Green.

At the corner of Raymond and Green Street in Old Pasadena is a massive seven-story Moorish Colonial and Spanish-style tower overlooking Central Park. Col. George G. Green, who worked in the Patent Medicine Business, erected the Castle Green.

The Castle Green, the middle of the Hotel Green’s three structures, first welcomed guests in 1899, and it was a luxurious getaway for people from the East who wanted to escape the harsh winter.

Address: 99 S Raymond Ave, Pasadena, CA 91105, United States

2. The Water Tower of Lake Arrowhead (Lake Arrowhead Landmark)

Los Angeles developer Arthur S. Bent constructed the iconic blue tower in the center of Lake Arrowhead in 1908 and was built initially to disperse water for agricultural use in the San Bernardino Valley.

According to the historical topography chart of the lake bottom in that location, the tower is about 500 feet off Eagle Point in 145 feet of water and rises 43 feet above the water when the lake is entire.

On July 5, 1908, a reinforced concrete building was officially dedicated, and boaters who went by the structure on the lake were treated to a birthday cake as part of a celebration organized by the Arrowhead Lake Association and the Rim of the World Historical Society.

Lake Arrowhead is a secure, substantially smaller lake, and it is only for residents of the “Arrowhead Woods” subdivision, which has approximately a mile of lakefront land.

Castles in Ramona & San Luis Obispo, California

1. mt. woodson castle (craftsman movement style).

You probably wouldn’t picture a mysterious castle with 27 rooms near Ramona, San Diego; this mysterious Mt. Woodson Castle still stands today.

Amy Strong, an accomplished dressmaker, commissioned the castle’s completion in 1921, during the height of the Craftsman Movement.

She used to have a job and reside in the Grant Building in central Ramona before she moved to Ramona, and at the same time, Amy would frequently visit the Hotel Del Coronado, where she would mingle with the city’s elite.

Moreover, she did a lot of volunteer work and made annual trips to Europe to stock up on fabric for her high-end clientele’s wardrobes.

It took her five years and $50,000 to build her house, and it was created with the help of many skilled people and served as a symbol of the bond connecting her and her community.

The boulders were chosen and carefully selected from the mountain’s side for their strength based on their dimensions, form, and hue.

Also, the clay soil alongside the watercourse provided a plentiful supply of adobe bricks to construct the second story.

Address: 16302 N Woodson Dr, Ramona, CA 92065, United States

2. Château Noland (Ideal For Celebrations)

The tranquil setting of Chateau Noland is perfect for commemorating special occasions and beginning exciting new chapters in life.

Daniel and Lindsey Noland, members of the Noland family, manage Chateau Noland.

Also, Dan, who grew up on the Central Coast, moved back to raise his household with Lindsey, who shares his interest in creating lifelong memories for children.

Taking over the land felt like a natural progression and a lifelong goal that had finally come true.

Dan’s parents invested 25 years in constructing the house, and Dan’s dad wanted to do it, and he knew it would be difficult.

Later, Dan and Lindsey rebranded Chateau Noland to include a piece of their story, despite Dan’s father initially creating it with his Irish history in mind.

Yes, it is surprising just how much history Los Angeles really has.

If you take the time to look, you’ll realize that there are some truly extraordinary places here in LA that do not always get the attention they deserve. Banning Residence Museum

401 E M St, Wilmington, CA 90744

First on our list of historic mansions is the Banning Residence Museum. If you’ve been following me for a while then You are already well aware of my love affair with this beautiful home.

A small museum ran mostly by local volunteers, the Banning Museum is one of the only Greek Revival style homes in Los Angeles. Built-in 1850 by Phineas Banning, Father of the Port of Los Angeles, the Banning Museum a testament to the rise of the city of LA we now know it today. Tediously restored and furnished with Victorian-era antiques, the museum serves to preserve the history of the Banning Family and share it’s unique link to the city of Los Angeles.

Days of operation, tour times, and events hosted by the Banning Museum can be found at banningmuseum.org

Rosenheim Mansion

1120 Westchester Pl, Los Angeles, CA 90019

Look familiar? I know all my American Horror Story fans are screaming YES. Regardless if you’re an AHD fan or not, the Rosenheim historic mansion has as an extensive history within the Hollywood film industry.

Built by renowned architect Alfred Rosenheim in 1908, it was once know referred to as “one of the finest homes in Los Angeles.” A recognized cultural and historical landmark (#660) the Rosenheim mansion stands as a tangible piece of film and architectural history.

Although privately owned, fans can still view and take pictures in front of the mansion. Just remember to be respectful and remain on the sidewalk or street.

For those of you interested in viewing the Rosenheim historic mansion, you can find it at 1120 Westchester Place, Los Angeles 90019.

Getty Villa

17985 Pacific Coast Hwy, Pacific Palisades, CA 90272

If you visited the Getty Villa before, you may be a little confused as to why this is even included as a historic mansion. Although the museum is an impressive structure, it is but a recreation of the Villa dei Pairi built in 1974. The historical mansion in question, which once served as both the home to oil magnate J Paul Getty and the original location of the Getty Museum, is actually hidden in plain view.

Although no longer accessible to the public, the former Malibu mansion of J Paul Getty can still be seen tucked just behind the Villa. To get the best view of the exterior of the historic mansion, guests should seek out the coffee cart on the second level near the restaurant.

Many people are aware of the Getty Museum, but not too many people know that there are in fact TWO. While the Getty Center (the beautiful, gigantic white structure just off the 405) is one of the most popular museums in L.A., the Getty Villa, in Malibu, is the original “Getty Museum.” Located just off P.C.H., the Villa houses the Getty’s collection of ancient Greek, Roman, and Etruscan art. A multi-level and immersive experience, the Getty Villa is unlike any other museum found in Los Angeles.

Whether you have visited before or are just coming to learn about the Villa, not everyone is aware of its unique origins. Being that I live for interesting and historical tidbits, I figured why not share all that I’ve come to learn about one of my favorite museums in LA. So here are 7 little-known facts about the Getty Villa.

  • Oil magnate and founder J. Paul Getty made his first million at the tender age of 23. Soon after striking it rich, he “retired” and became somewhat of a playboy. After a few years, Getty realized the leisurely life was not for him. He went on to create one of the largest oil corporations, Getty Oil, and become America’s first billionaire.
  • The original Getty Museum was located where the Villa is today, just not in the same structure. An avid collector of fine art and ancient antiquities, J Paul Getty opened his Malibu mansion to visitors in order to share his passion for the arts. The Getty Villa, the structure you visit today, was constructed in 1974 just two years prior to the death of Mr. Getty.
  • The original Malibu residence of Mr. Getty is still in existence, although it has since been converted into offices. The best vantage point for visitors to catch a glimpse of the exterior of the mansion is located on the outdoor second floor, just past the coffee cart, near the outdoor elevator.
  • With four gardens and six fountains, the Villa offers just as much outdoors as it does inside. While these features may just seem aesthetically pleasing, the outside spaces mimic areas that the ancients used on a daily basis. From the fountains that collected rainwater for drinking, cooking, and bathing to the gardens that grew food and medicinal herbs, the Villa creates an all-around immersive and engaging experience into these ancient cultures.
  • Upon leaving the parking structure you may notice you just don’t walk into the museum. In fact, you have to take an elevator up a level, then walk a path just to come to a point where you overlook the entrance. Why make entering the museum such a task? Well, that is because you are meant to view the museum as an excavation site. Just as they recreated the Villa to resemble the Roman Villa dei Papiri, the architects of the museum wanted to create a fully immersive experience for visitors. As you make your way down to the museum entrance it is as if you’re walking through the layers of time that have covered this Villa. The water feature located by the tour meeting area (adjacent to the bookstore) also reinforces this idea. You may notice that the water seeps from the wall, just like a real archeological site
  • Along with the different activities scattered throughout the Villa that allows for some hands-on learning (Reading Room, Timescape Room, and the Family Forum), there is a statue that the museum actually encourages guests to touch. Located just beyond the outer peristyle, follow the portico to the left. There  you’ll find a replica of Antonio Canova’s  Venus,  better known as the ‘touch statue.’ Installed for blind or low vision guests, the ‘touch statue’ allows all visitors to experience the art of form and texture.
  • Mr. Getty’s final resting place overlooks the museum. Yes, you read that correctly. J. Paul Getty, along with his two sons, is actually buried on the property. Of course, the area is restricted from the public so don’t go asking for it. But to get a general idea of where he is located, just look to the left as you are passing the entrance gate in your vehicle. He and his sons lay just atop the hill.

Virginia Robinson Gardens

1008 Elden Way, Beverly Hills, CA 90210

One of the only historic mansions I have yet to visit here in LA, the Virginia Robinson Gardens can be found tucked in the away in the center of Beverly Hills. Built in the early 1900s by retail giants Virginia and Harry Robinson, owners of the Robinson’s Department store, the mansion now serves as a botanical oasis and historic estate. Take a tour and discover the beauty of Mrs. Robinson’s lavish and well-renown gardens and her equally famous Hollywood parties.

For more information about guided tours and events visit robinsongarden.org.

Huntington Library, Museum, and Gardens

1151 Oxford Rd, San Marino, CA 91108

Set on 120 acres in San Marino, the Huntington Library, Art Collection, and Botanical Gardens was founded by businessman Henry E. Huntington and his wife Arabella. Both avid art and manuscript collectors, the Huntington’s amassed a collection worthy of a museum and in 1919 created the Huntington Library out of their estate. As time went on and the number of acquisitions grew, various structures were created to house the collections. The once opulent residence of Henry and Arabella was eventually converted into an art gallery. While a library was constructed to house rare book and manuscript collections. As for the rest of the grounds, specialized gardens scattered the 120 acres of land showcasing flora and fauna from around the world.

The Huntington Library has quickly become one of our all-time favorite museums here in Los Angeles. Not only do we get to view art but also the various botanical gardens allow the little ones a chance to run wild and explore. We have already visited multiple times and have yet to see all that the Huntington has to offer, which is probably the reason why we have come to love it so much. So if you are in the LA area and can’t think of anything to do, here are some reasons why you should check it out!

Obviously, the reason anyone visits a museum is to view art but in the case of The Huntington, there is so much more to do than just that. If you have kids the first place I suggest visiting is the Children’s Garden. It is our first stop every time we visit and it is my daughter’s absolute favorite. Not only is everything children-sized, but there are also various water features placed all around for the little ones to play. Here kids can run around exploring the different plants, sounds, and sights helping to really engage them in sensory play. My daughter’s favorite thing to do is run through the tiny trellis’ and of course get sopping wet playing in the fountains. Once she has had her fill, we usually then make our way over to the Botanical Center conveniently located right next-door.

Another favorite of Hayden’s, and a place all kids will likely enjoy, the Botanical Center is located inside a beautiful glass conservatory that houses three distinct habitats. A truly immersive exhibit the greenhouse allows families to explore flora and fauna from tropical rainforests, cloud forest, and even a bog. There are even microscopes so children can get an even closer look at the plants and tiny critters that call these habitats home. After all the scientific exploration is through, we venture off to see what else will keep the little ones occupied. I for one LOVE art, so I always make sure we visit a few of the art galleries (in hopes my kids will one day share my passion or at least appreciate it.) But if do not have little ones, or don’t wish to bring them along there are plenty of other gardens, activities, and rotating exhibits to keep you occupied during your visit.

Greystone Mansion

905 Loma Vista Dr, Beverly Hills, CA 90210

Built during 1927 the Greystone Mansion was constructed for Ned Doheny, the heir to oil magnate Edward Doheny, and his wife Lucy. The mansion, nicknamed the ‘Greystone’ because of the “abundant use of stone construction and its rather gray somber appearance,” is also often referred to as the Doheny Estate due to the murder/suicide of its owner.

Besides its dark history, this historic mansion has been the backdrop for countless movies and continues to be very much a part of Hollywood history.

Now owned by the city of Beverly Hills, the Greystone Mansion and surrounding gardens functions as a public park with tours of the interior given sporadically throughout the year.

J J Haggarty Villa

421 Paseo Del Mar, Palos Verdes Estates, CA 90274

Unlike most of the historic mansion’s previously listed, the J J Haggarty Villa is probably the least renown but has been repurposed in the most unique way.

Built-in 1927 as a summer residence for wealthy merchant J.J. Haggarty, this historic mansion was at one point the largest home in Palos Verdes. Constructed to resemble a Mediterranean villa, Haggarty’s mansion was comprised of nearly 32 rooms and included a private pier, as well as a conservatory. With Italian Renaissance frescoes decorating the interior and Ralphealesque decor throughout the home, the Haggarty mansion was a jewel amid the developing community of Palos Verdes Estates.

After the death of Haggarty in 1938, the mansion sat vacantly and rumors persisted that the property was haunted. In 1950, the house was purchased by a religious group and converted into the Neighborhood Church.

Still, an active religious center, the historic mansion of J.J. Haggarty now entertains churchgoers while beautifully landscaped grounds are open to the public.

So what did you think? Make sure to leave a comment below and tell me if you’d visited any of these historic mansions!

The mansion’s construction began in 1884 and continued non-stop for 38 years until Sarah’s death in 1922. One of the most intriguing aspects of the Winchester Mystery House is the infamous staircase that seemingly defies logic.

It starts from the ground floor and ascends several steps, only to abruptly end at a ceiling with no further access.

This peculiar design was believed to confuse any restless spirits roaming the house, preventing them from causing mischief or harm. But the staircase is just one example of the many odd features scattered throughout the mansion. Doors that open onto.

Take a look inside the famously creepy Winchester House, which has 160 rooms, staircases that lead to nowhere, and doors that open into walls

  • The Winchester mansion in San Jose is a labyrinth, filled with staircases that lead to nowhere.
  • It has 160 bedrooms, 40 staircases, 13 bathrooms, and 47 fireplaces.
  • Many believe Sarah Winchester built the home to confuse and trap evil spirits that haunted her.
  • Visit Insider's homepage for more stories.

Sarah Lockwood Pardee grew up in Connecticut in the 1800s and eventually married into the wealthy Winchester family.

tourist mansion in california

In 1839, Sarah Lockwood Pardee was born in New Haven, Connecticut, to a working-class family. During the Civil War, at age 23, she married William Winchester, the heir to the Winchester Repeating Arms Company, a rifle company.

"Winchester was quiet, which suited Sarah because she was very quiet herself," the home's historian, Janan Boehme, told Insider. "She was also a very tiny lady. She stood at about 4 feet 10 inches. She was a private person."

Over the next few decades, Sarah experienced several tragedies that would shape her life forever.

tourist mansion in california

William and Sarah had one daughter, Annie, who died at just 6 weeks old. They never had any other children, and William died 15 years later from tuberculosis, in 1881 at age 43. William's fortune from the gun company was left to Sarah.

In 1885, a widowed Sarah Winchester moved to California to start a new life in a farmhouse she built on 40 acres.

tourist mansion in california

At the time, newspapers were filled with advertisements, luring people to move across the country and settle in the newly incorporated California. Winchester first lived in San Francisco, but the weather bothered her arthritis. Instead, she decided to buy 40 acres of land and build a small farmhouse in the Santa Clara Valley.

Winchester quickly started to remodel the home to make it bigger so that her three sisters could move in with her.

tourist mansion in california

According to Boehme, Winchester had a passion for remodeling and building homes after she helped construct one back in Connecticut. Boehme said the remodels were nothing but a passion project for Winchester.

"It was something to keep her busy," Boehme said. "It helped her employ people and share her wealth that way. She just never really stopped building."

But many think that Winchester's remodels had other, more eerie motives.

tourist mansion in california

There are many conspiracy theories surrounding the mansion, but the most popular lore is that Winchester went to a spiritualist and learned that she was being haunted by spirits who died at the hands of the Winchester gun company. Because she was living off the gun company's fortune, the spiritualist told her to move to California and build a home that would appease and trap the ghosts who follow her.

Boehme said there is no proof of that story, but Winchester did likely practice spiritualism.

"It was quite popular during and after the Civil War," she said. "Women had lost so many of their loved ones. They were looking for some way to communicate with them."

No matter the motive, Winchester remodeled her mansion nonstop for 38 years.

tourist mansion in california

Although there are theories that the construction went on for 24 hours a day, Boehme said that is fiction. It is true, however, that the remodeling of the house went on for decades. Winchester would employ around 13 workers at a time. She was known for paying her workers well above the usual rate. Oftentimes, she would buy homes for her employees' families to live in while they worked on her home.

Today, the house is not only known for its creepy history but also for its massive size.

tourist mansion in california

Winchester spent $5.5 million on her 24,000-square-foot home, which has 160 bedrooms, 40 staircases, 13 bathrooms, and 47 fireplaces. There are a whopping 10,000 windows and 2,000 doors. Boehme said the house "grew organically."

Odd design elements, like stairways that lead to nowhere, also make this house so well known.

tourist mansion in california

Throughout the house, you can find staircases that lead to nowhere, doors that open onto walls, and rooms with windows on the floor. The bizarre design elements feed into the theory that Winchester was trying to trap and confuse the ghosts that haunted her, but Boehme said there's a more realistic explanation. Winchester designed the home with no blueprints and no formal design experience. These design oddities may have been mistakes or a simple change of mind. However, it is unclear to this day if these choices were deliberate or accidental.

Despite the home's oddities, it's still a gorgeous example of Queen Anne Revival architecture.

tourist mansion in california

The pointed spires, the wraparound porch, the shingles, and the elaborate columns are all popular features of a Queen Anne Revival, according to Boehme.

In its heyday, the home stood seven-stories tall. Today, after the 1906 earthquake badly damaged it, it's just four levels.

tourist mansion in california

The great San Francisco earthquake of 1906 damaged the Winchester mansion all the way out in San Jose. After seeing the damage, Boehme said Winchester decided to remove the top few floors because it was too dangerous.

Winchester restored most of the damage inflicted by the earthquake.

tourist mansion in california

Most of the house still stands, and visitors can explore it today.

Visitors enter through the carriage room, which has large double doors.

tourist mansion in california

Winchester wanted the carriage room to be covered with a roof so that she could get in and out of the house without ever getting wet by the rain. The room is also notable because there is a strange door that opens onto a wall and another door that is too small to walk through.

Near the carriage room is an odd staircase that has 44 steps and seven turns ... just to get to the second floor.

tourist mansion in california

While some believe this staircase was meant to confuse ghosts, Boehme said Winchester actually designed the smaller steps so that she could easily get upstairs with her arthritis.

Upstairs is Winchester's elaborately designed master bedroom, which is where she died.

tourist mansion in california

Boehme describes the room as "elegant" with embossed wallpaper that surrounds the space and elaborate furniture that fills the room. Although it's beautiful, there is a darker reason why this room is so famous. This is the room where Winchester died of heart failure in 1922, at age 82.

Around the corner, you can find the first conservatory in the house.

tourist mansion in california

Boehme said Winchester loved to make her home look and feel beautiful. She did that by adding some plants to the mansion, though it's unclear what kind she filled this space with.

The conservatory leads into a space known as the Hall of Fires because there are seven heat sources for the small room.

tourist mansion in california

The Hall of Fires is actually three small spaces that seem to have once been separated by curtains. Strangely, there are four fireplaces and three hot air vents in this space. Boehme said it's likely that Winchester used this space as a sauna to help ease her arthritis.

Winchester loved other cultures, so a few bedrooms are Asian-inspired.

tourist mansion in california

Winchester's niece lived in this room for 15 years until she got married in her 30s.

The next stop in the house is the south conservatory, which is the room with the most windows.

tourist mansion in california

There are windows on each of the four walls in this room, including on the ceiling and on the floor. This conservatory is down the hall from Winchester's bedroom.

One of the best rooms in the older part of the house is the Venetian dining room.

tourist mansion in california

After this conservatory, visitors pass from the newer part of the house to the older part, using a small set of stairs that once acted as exterior porch steps. The Venetian room is in this part of the house.

Overall, there are three dining rooms in the house and six kitchens.

But the real showstopper in this part of the house is the decadent grand ballroom.

tourist mansion in california

The ballroom is the biggest room in the house with the highest ceiling, reaching 12 feet. A fireplace mantle takes up most of one wall, while wood paneling covers most of the other walls.

While the ballroom has only two stained-glass windows, the home itself is known for them, as Winchester was famously infatuated with them.

tourist mansion in california

Winchester became known for her stained-glass windows. She commissioned most of these glass pieces in 1890. Boehme said the windows share similar motifs and similar glass, but they have different types of designs. The Daisy Bedroom has daisies in its stained-glass windows, for example.

A portrait of Sarah Winchester hangs in one of the many rooms.

tourist mansion in california

The house opened for tours just five months after she passed away.

Guests have also reported strange occurrences throughout the house.

tourist mansion in california

Time magazine once named the Winchester house one of the most haunted places in the world.

"Outside in the front gardens of the mansion, I noticed something out of the corner of my eye. It was what appeared to be a bushy-haired woman staring out of one of the windows on the second floor," a guest identified as N.R. told the Winchester Mystery House staff, per Boehme. "As soon as she saw me, she turned and walked away. I originally thought nothing of it, but a few weeks later I learned that when photos were taken with these specific second-floor windows, sometimes a bushy-haired woman had appeared in the background."

Some say they've seen small orbs floating around the stables.

tourist mansion in california

"After doing a behind the scenes tour that was being video recorded, we could see 'orbs' in the scene shot in the stables. That video is still accessible, and at one point you can actually see one of the orbs on my arm," a person identified as T.R. told the Winchester Mystery House staff.

Others claim to have observed ghosts in the gardens.

tourist mansion in california

"I was going to clock out for the day and on the way, I saw a small woman dressed in black near the picnic gardens. It put me a little on edge, so I hurried to clock out. On my route, back through the estate, the women was not there anymore. The woman looked like Mrs. Winchester," a person identified as N.B. told the Winchester Mystery House staff.

Although historian Boehme said she has had similar paranormal experiences, she hopes people will understand that the Winchester history is more than just a ghost story.

tourist mansion in california

Despite providing more realistic theories for Winchester's mysteries, Boehme admitted that she has heard her name whispered behind her back when no one else was in the room. However, she hopes people come to the house to learn more about how Winchester was a creative businesswoman.

"I'd like to think that [people] come to appreciate Sarah as more than just this eccentric, ghost-ridden, tragic figure," Boehme said. "She was actually a pretty interesting person, a smart lady, and she was good to her employees. She was never afraid of trying something new. She really was a good person."

Inside a $38M Oceanside Mansion With A Private Beach

Released on 11/30/2020

[chill music]

Hi guys, and welcome to Casa San Mateo,

which is located in the most southern tip of Orange County.

It's actually in this super exclusive,

triple gated community.

The house behind me is 13,000 square feet.

Seven bedrooms, 10 bathrooms, 'cause nine is never enough.

And we have tennis courts, bocce courts, motor courts.

And also this beautiful 55 feet pool.

It's just endless.

The landscape is incredible.

I'm on 450 feet of private ocean.

All of this is on the market for $38 million.

Come with me and let me give you a tour.

So we're in the main house now.

James Glover designed this in 2007.

It's a Tuscan farmhouse inspiration,

but it's really transitional,

it has some modern touches in it.

And here you have this incredible ceiling with the beams.

[dynamic music]

What's so amazing about this estate is that the volume,

nature coming in through your big, big arched windows.

And this beautiful, clear glass,

with the ocean and the gardens literally

come in here to your living room.

For anyone likes to entertain,

all of these doors just open up to the ocean,

and your three acres of beautiful landscaped land.

It's a really beautiful palette in here.

As you can see, it's kind of masculine

because it's rustic and it has this Tuscany feel.

But it's also feminine 'cause the palette is really soft.

And the lighting coming in,

it's always bright, it's always happy.

The beamed ceilings, speakers, lighting everywhere.

And then this sort of antique fireplace.

And then of course the warmth of the floor,

the original wide plank oak flooring.

And then of course, the lighting,

the lighting is everything.

So beautiful to wake up and walk around

in this house in the morning.

[jazzy music]

One of my absolute favorite moments

in this house is this hallway.

It's big enough, long enough to do a catwalk.

And you see these beautiful, almost church-like,

growing vaulted ceilings.

Look at the windows, look at the landscaping,

and all that light coming in.

And then it ends with this beautiful moment

of the piano right here.

I mean, I feel like I'm in a castle.

[upbeat music]

The kitchen, the kitchen, the kitchen.

I mean the kitchen is everything.

A little bit more of a traditional kitchen feel,

which is super cozy.

And I really love this.

You have a lot of different seating areas.

You have a breakfast area, you have a formal dining.

I love this sort of antique hood here.

The pot filler, the granite.

Just has such a cozy feeling.

Look at the beams,

Reclaimed wood, double fridges, double freezers,

double dishwashers, and lots of lots of endless storage.

And then of course, maybe the most important thing, again,

you open the windows and you have the ocean.

In the entire house you have lights on both sides.

You have light here and the natural light on the other side.

I think in this sort of post-COVID world,

everybody wants this sort of indoor outdoor living, right?

This opens up to the courtyard with the water features.

And then this opens up to the pool and the ocean.

This living room is kind of spilling out

into this beautiful landscaped outdoor area.

I mean, look at this.

It is so incredibly beautiful.

All handmade.

Each of these were put in by hand.

And it feels like something you only

can see actually in Europe.

It's so architecturally stunning.

And then you're coming in here with the outdoor fireplace,

the bar, you listen to the ocean, you look at the pool.

You're getting into the jacuzzi,

and you have this incredible open view.

There are pools, and then there are pools.

This is one of the longest, most dramatic,

residential pools in Southern California.

It's 55 feet.

And this whole thing lights up at night.

You can sit here, maybe with a drink, I don't know.

And then you have these little trail paths right here.

You can go down to the beach.

This is one of the most important surf points

actually in Southern California, maybe in the world.

One of the biggest selling points with this property

is the 450 linear feet.

So what's so unique here is the obvious,

that it sits on this cliff, overlooking the ocean.

So you always have a really nice breeze,

which I think is really important in Southern California.

And then of course, there's pathways down to the beach.

It's like your own park right here.

Hi surfers!

Do you think they heard me?

I just love landscaping when it's done right, like this.

I mean, look how beautiful.

It's so dreamy, it's so romantic.

All of this, of course,

the entire three acres, lit up at night.

You have an irrigation system anywhere.

So if you travel, all of this will stay perfect.

When you buy a property of this size,

creating something like this from scratch will take years.

You have this beautiful bocce court.

You have the ocean in front of it.

There are certain things in life

you can't even put a price on.

This is the third gate.

You have this beautiful motor court coming in here.

This tree is also lit up at night.

And I wanna show you this little guest house,

which is so cute.

With the Dutch doors.

Look at the stone.

And then all of this here opens up

and you have this beautiful landscaping.

Okay guys, this is where the magic happens.

I'm smiling so big 'cause I'm looking at this.

I'm just a sucker for a big, beautiful window.

And then of course, they placed the bed right there.

So when you're waking up, you're in your comfort

under the sheets, and you're looking out.

I mean, this is like, you've really made it in life.

Can you imagine anything more soothing,

filling a bathtub with hot water,

opening all of these windows,

feeling that breeze from the ocean,

hearing the waves, and just relax.

Because you deserve it.

A primary suite without its own terrace

is not a real primary suite.

Maybe yoga.

Maybe just a big, beautiful sort of sofa bed

to watch the sunrise or the sunset.

Maybe a little small table for breakfast right here.

The possibilities are endless.

And then of course, very Tuscan castle-like,

you have own door that leads down to the beach.

We're in a typical guest bedroom now.

Remember, we have six of these bedrooms.

And I think in this post-COVID world,

everybody wants more bedrooms.

Everyone feels, me included, that we need more space.

All seven bedrooms have a bathroom en suite,

and most of them are facing the ocean and the water.

And then with the freestanding tubs,

almost feels like a primary suite.

We're right outside the kitchen.

So basically dining inside, dining outside.

You can do dining in the front

by the swimming pool, the ocean.

Or in this beautiful sort of courtyard.

Wait, come here, come here, listen to this.

[water splashing]

Does anybody have a coin?

Everyone is always looking for an amazing home office.

And in this estate, we have multiple options for you.

Right here could be a beautiful place to do some work.

You're walking over now to the guest house.

Beautiful steel and glass doors.

And you come into this little vaulted beam ceiling.

I would do my home office here, looking at the ocean.

Open all those doors

and you have your own terrace right there.

And then, your last option.

Which is really beautiful too,

with the beamed ceilings.

And you've got the ocean, the pool, nature outside.

Now we're in the citrus garden.

We got oranges, we got lime.

We have an herb garden.

We have Apple trees.

I mean, the list goes on.

But maybe most importantly to my heart is...

[rooster crowing]

Yup, the chickens.

Is there a buyer in there?

Yes, yes, I'm not gonna disturb you guys.

Make some eggs, okay.

Okay, folks, I gotta go, I have a showing.

But I wanna say goodbye.

Send you kisses, hugs.

Casa San Mateo, on the market, $38 million.

Three acres, 13,000 square foot main house,

plus the guest house.

The beautiful swimming pool, you saw.

The gardens, the chickens, the motor court,

tennis courts, the bocce court.

And of course, the 450 linear feet of ocean-front property.

It is just so incredibly stunning.

I gotta go sell it now.

Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs faces sweeping sex-trafficking inquiry: What the feds have, need to prove

Over the last few months, a legendary name in the music world has faced a series of shocking allegations of sexual abuse.

In civil lawsuits, four women have accused Sean “Diddy” Combs of rape, assault and other abuses, dating back three decades. One of the allegations involved a minor. The claims sent shock waves through the music industry and put Combs’ entertainment empire in jeopardy.

Now, the hip-hop mogul’s legal troubles have worsened considerably.

Law enforcement sources told The Times that Combs is the subject of a sweeping inquiry into sex-trafficking allegations that resulted in a federal raid Monday at his estates in Los Angeles and Miami.

A law enforcement agent carries a bag of evidence to a van as federal agents stand at the entrance to a property belonging to rapper Sean "Diddy" Combs, Monday, March 25, 2024, on Star Island in Miami Beach, Fla. Two properties belonging to Combs in Los Angeles and Miami were searched Monday by federal Homeland Security Investigations agents and other law enforcement as part of an ongoing sex trafficking investigation by federal authorities in New York, two law enforcement officials told The Associated Press. Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs’ L.A., Miami homes raided in sex-trafficking inquiry, sources say

Agents search Sean Combs’ Holmby Hills and Miami mansions as part of a federal inquiry into sex trafficking allegations, law enforcement sources said.

March 26, 2024

Authorities have declined to comment on the case, and Combs has not been charged with any crime. But the scene of dozens of Department of Homeland Security agents — guns drawn — searching Combs’ properties underscored the seriousness of the investigation.

At the same time as the raids, police in Miami arrested Brendan Paul, a man described in a recent lawsuit against Combs as a confidant and drug “mule.” Miami-Dade police took Paul, 25, into custody on suspicion of possession of cocaine and a controlled substance-laced candy, records show.

Paul was arrested at Miami Opa-Locka Executive Airport, where TMZ posted video showing Combs walking around Monday afternoon. An affidavit reviewed by the Miami Herald alleged that police working with Homeland Security found drugs in Paul’s bag. There is nothing in Miami court records connecting Combs to Paul, who was later released on $2,500 bail.

The arrest, however, is the latest in a string of legal woes tied to Combs.

Sources with knowledge of the sex-trafficking investigation into Combs, who spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak publicly, said federal authorities have interviewed at least three women, but it’s unclear whether any are among those who have filed suit.

Behind the calamitous fall of hip-hop mogul Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs

In the wake of multiple lawsuits filed against him, former members of Combs’ inner circle told The Times that his alleged misconduct against women goes back decades.

Dec. 13, 2023

Legal experts say it could take time to build a criminal case against Combs but note that the civil suits could offer investigators a road map.

Dmitry Gorin, a former L.A. County sex-crimes prosecutor who is now in private practice, said the allegations in the lawsuits would likely have been enough for a judge to grant search warrants for Combs’ homes.

Investigators probably would seek authorization to “search for videos or photographs on any devices connected to the target ... anywhere where digital images can be found in connection to sexual conduct that would have been recorded,” Gorin said.

Shawn Holley, an attorney for Combs, did not respond to requests for comment, but Aaron Dyer, another of his lawyers, on Tuesday called the raids a “witch hunt” and “a gross overuse of military-level force.”

“Yesterday, there was a gross overuse of military-level force as search warrants were executed at Mr. Combs’ residences,” Dyer said in a statement. “This unprecedented ambush — paired with an advanced, coordinated media presence — leads to a premature rush to judgment of Mr. Combs and is nothing more than a witch hunt based on meritless accusations made in civil lawsuits. There has been no finding of criminal or civil liability with any of these allegations.”

Combs has previously denied any wrongdoing.

Sean Combs arrives at a pre-Grammy party

Gorin and other legal experts said investigators could be focused, in part, on the sexual assault allegations involving a minor. If a minor is moved across state lines for the purpose of sex, “that is enough for at least an argument ... of sex trafficking because somebody underage cannot consent,” Gorin said.

“Sex trafficking for adults usually involves some sort of coercion or other restraints,” he said, and can be tougher to prove. Prosecutors would need to show you “encouraged somebody to engage in sexual activity for money or some other inducement.”

Coercion, he added, is not limited to threats of violence. It could involve being held against one’s will or someone simply saying, “I don’t want to participate in group sex, and now I’m being forced to.”

Homeland Security investigates most sex-trafficking operations for the federal government. Legal experts say one possibility why the agency could be involved in this case is because the women involved in the allegations against Combs could be from other countries.

Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs sexual harassment suit includes notable music industry names

A new suit from music producer Rodney “Lil Rod” Jones makes new, explosive claims about Combs’ alleged assaults and misconduct in granular detail, naming several prominent artists and music executives as well.

Feb. 28, 2024

Meghan Blanco, a defense attorney who has handled sexual trafficking cases, said they can be “incredibly difficult cases to prove.”

“They have [in the Combs case] convinced one or more federal magistrates they had enough probable cause for one or more search warrants,” Blanco said. “Given the scope of the investigation, it seems they are further along than most investigations.”

Combs’ legal troubles have been building for months.

His former girlfriend, Casandra Ventura, the singer known as Cassie, accused him of rape and repeated physical assaults and said he forced her to have sex with male prostitutes in front of him. Joi Dickerson-Neal accused Combs in a suit of drugging and raping her in 1991, recording the attack and then distributing the footage without her consent.

Liza Gardner filed a third suit in which she claimed Combs and R&B singer Aaron Hall sexually assaulted her. Hall could not be reached for comment.

Another lawsuit alleges that Combs and former Bad Boy label president Harve Pierre gang-raped and sex-trafficked a 17-year-old girl. Pierre said in a statement that the allegations were “disgusting,” “false” and a “desperate attempt for financial gain.”

After the filing of the fourth suit, Combs wrote on Instagram: “Enough is enough. For the last couple of weeks, I have sat silently and watched people try to assassinate my character, destroy my reputation and my legacy. Sickening allegations have been made against me by individuals looking for a quick payday. Let me be absolutely clear: I did not do any of the awful things being alleged. I will fight for my name, my family and for the truth.”

Last month, producer Rodney “Lil Rod” Jones filed a federal lawsuit against Combs accusing him of sexually harassing and threatening him for more than a year. The suit includes mention of Paul in connection with “the affairs ... involving dealing in controlled substances.”

On Monday, the suit was amended to include Oscar winner Cuba Gooding Jr. as a co-defendant in the lawsuit.

Cuba Gooding Jr. added as co-defendant in Lil Rod’s lawsuit against Diddy

Cuba Gooding Jr. is added as a co-defendant in a lawsuit against Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs. Record producer Rodney ‘Lil Rod’ Jones accuses the actor of sexual assault.

Blanco said prosecutors “are going to look carefully for corroboration — the numbers of people accusing the person of similar acts.” Beyond that, they will be looking for videos, recordings and cellphone records that place people in the same locations or text messages or other discussions at the time of the alleged acts.

She said prosecutors are trying to build a record of incidents that happened some time ago.

Douglas Wigdor, a lawyer for Ventura and another, unnamed plaintiff, said in response to reports of the search warrant issued against Combs: “We will always support law enforcement when it seeks to prosecute those that have violated the law. Hopefully, this is the beginning of a process that will hold Mr. Combs responsible for his depraved conduct.”

Wigdor on Tuesday called his clients “courageous and credible witnesses.”

“To the extent there is a prosecution and they want our clients to testify truthfully,” he said, “I think they will and that will be damning evidence.”

The searches Monday in L.A. and Miami sparked worldwide attention.

Diddy’s ‘Love’ producer Lil Rod accuses him and associates of sexual assault, illicit behavior

Rodney ‘Lil Rod’ Jones has filed a bombshell lawsuit against Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs accusing the media mogul of sexually harassing and threatening him.

His 17,000-square-foot Holmby Hills mansion, where Combs debuted his last album a year ago, was flooded with Homeland Security agents who gathered evidence on behalf of an investigation being run by the Southern District of New York, according to law enforcement officials familiar with the inquiry.

Two of Combs’ sons were briefly detained at the Holmby Hills property as agents searched the mansion in footage captured by FOX11 Los Angeles.

Both Blanco and Gorin said prosecutors will have to examine the accusers’ motives for coming forward and whether they are motivated by financial gain. They are sure to look for inconsistencies in any allegations, they said.

Any defense, Blanco added, will question why the accusers are only now coming forward and whether they have an incentive beyond justice.

“It comes down to credibility,” she said.

Biden says he will travel to Baltimore next week following bridge collapse: Updates

President Joe Biden said Friday he plans to visit Baltimore next week with Maryland Gov. Wes Moore following the recent collapse of  a major bridge that  killed six people  and  shut down a vital shipping port .

Biden confirmed next week’s trip to reporters after landing on Air Force One at Joint Base Andrews after returning from New York. Biden did not say which date he will make the short visit to Baltimore. The president has pledged his administration’s full support as Baltimore recovers from the bridge disaster and said he expects the federal government to cover the full cost to rebuild the bridge.

The announcement came as crews continued to assess  the immense wreckage in the Patapsco River  and as specialized salvage equipment began to arrive.

Some 1,100 personnel from the Army Corps of Engineers, along with highly specialized equipment, were deployed to remove the debris and reopen the nation's largest vehicle handling port. The Chesapeake 1000, the largest floating crane on the Eastern Seaboard, arrived in Baltimore at 11 p.m. Thursday, U.S. Coast Guard spokesperson Carmen Caver told USA TODAY.

"This crane is massive," Moore said. "So is the challenge ahead of us."

Two cranes were on scene Friday with two more expected to arrive in the coming days, Moore said at a news conference. Three heavy-lift barges have also arrived in the Baltimore harbor to hoist the wreckage and haul it away, the Navy announced Friday. The governor said in the coming days, a total of seven floating cranes, 10 tug boats, nine barges, eight salvage vessels and five coast guard boats are expected.

"Our team went out with the Coast Guard just a few hours ago," Moore said. "To go out there and see it up close, you realize just how daunting a task this is."

The rubble from the bridge, with sharp, “lethal” edges, clutters the floor of the shipping channel, according to the Army Corps of Engineers. The wreckage, some of it 50 feet below the surface in turbid water, is being assessed before being cut into pieces, Lt. Gen. Scott Spellmon, commander of the Army Corps of Engineers, told USA TODAY.

Surveys of the damage have been complicated by the river's strong current and low visibility, U.S. Coast Guard Rear Adm. Shannon Gilreath told reporters.

The bodies of four construction workers who were on the Francis Scott Key Bridge when it collapsed are believed to still be inside vehicles in the wreckage. A crew of eight workers were on break at the time of impact. Two were rescued hours after the crash, and on Wednesday, two bodies were recovered from inside a pickup truck submerged in the river.

Officials suspended the recovery effort because of the dangerous conditions for the search teams. Moore said divers will continue the search when it's safe.

Developments:

∎ Parts of the mid-Atlantic region were under wind advisories Friday as gusts as high as 50 mph were forecast, according to the National Weather Service . Through 8 p.m. winds in the high 30s were expected to lash the Baltimore area.

∎ The U.S. Chamber of Commerce announced it will host a virtual briefing on Monday to hear from industry leaders about the "implications of the port closure, strategies they are implementing to mitigate disruptions, and the path forward on a long-term solution," according to the Maryland Chamber of Commerce .

Officials outline steps to reopen Baltimore port

There are three phases that will allow the Baltimore port to reopen to ships, said Coast Guard Rear Adm. Shannon Gilreath:

  • Reopen the shipping channel
  • Remove the Dali ship
  • Remove the debris from the destroyed Key Bridge from the rest of the waterway

The first part of the plan is underway, with crews doing assessments on the damage both above and below the water, Gilreath said.

Moore said each step of the "remarkably complex operation" will have to be carefully planned. The piece of the bridge currently resting on top of the ship weighs between 3,000 and 4,000 tons, Moore said. It will need to be cut into pieces to be lifted away.

Will the Baltimore port closure impact car prices?

Last year, the Port of Baltimore handled a record 847,158 cars and light trucks, more than any other U.S. port, according to Maryland Gov. Wes Moore’s office. With such an important shipping artery shut down until the wreckage is cleared – a process that some experts said could take well over a month – a big question emerged: Will those costs trickle down to car buyers?

The good news: Most experts said it is unlikely consumers will see a spike in the transaction prices for new vehicles in the near term. But in the longer term, it could get complicated.

"Several factors, including the length of the port’s closure and the capacity of alternate ports, are two key elements," Karl Brauer, executive analyst at  iSeeCars.com  in Los Angeles, told the Detroit Free Press , part of the USA TODAY Network. "Additional variables include how much a given brand relies on Baltimore for both vehicle and supply chain shipments. For instance, it’s likely a brand like Subaru, which is prominent in Northeast markets, faces a bigger impact than Hyundai, which has manufacturing hubs in the Southeast and sells a larger percentage of vehicles in Western states like California."

Bozzella said ways to mitigate supply chain disruptions were learned from the pandemic, when vehicle prices surged, which may quell any harsh impacts from the Baltimore port shutdown. Ivan Drury, director of insights at Edmunds.com, said that while vehicle prices could rise, he emphasized that they would not jump as high as they did during the pandemic.

Tyson Jominy, vice president of data and analytics at J.D. Power, said, given the uncertainty around the port's closure, it's too soon to declare an impact on pricing. However, he is skeptical that an automaker could hike prices much in today’s environment for two reasons: competition and the fact that there are 1.7 million new vehicles on dealership lots across all brands right now, giving automakers sufficient inventory, at least for the two months.

"It is one port, so there are competitive ports where products are sent instead, which would take time and expense, but it’s not as if the entire Eastern Seaboard is down," Jominy said. "That’s the nature of logistics. The people who do this, crisis is their business.”

Investigator recounts cargo ship's 'black box' audio

National Transportation Safety Board investigator  Marcel Muise  recounted audio discovered in the  cargo ship's "black box" at a news conference on Wednesday , providing the most detailed account of the moments leading up to the catastrophic wreck.

◾ Muise said several alarms were heard on the recording just before 1:25 a.m., followed about a minute later by steering commands and rudder orders.

◾ At 1:26:39 a.m., the pilot on duty made a radio call for assistance to tug boats in the area, and 45 seconds later, ordered the port anchor dropped.

◾ At 1:27:25 a.m., the pilot said on a radio call that Dali had lost power and was nearing the bridge. Around that same time, the officer on duty for the Maryland Transportation Authority told officers who were at both ends of the bridge for the road repairs to close traffic, which likely saved lives.

◾ At 1:29:33 a.m., as the powerless Dali was drifting at 8 mph, the VDR recorded "sounds consistent with the collision of the bridge," Muise said. Six seconds later, the pilot reported to the Coast Guard that the bridge was down.

14 containers with hazardous material 'impacted' by crash

Of the 56 containers loaded on the vessel that contained hazardous materials, 14 were impacted by the crash, according to a statement from the Unified Command , which includes the U.S. Coast Guard and the Maryland Department of the Environment.

The statement said an industrial hygienist assessed the containers and found that those affected by the collision were soap products, perfume products, or not otherwise specified resin. First responders also observed a "sheen" around the ship, leading them to establish a 6,000-foot safety zone as well as over 4,000 feet of containment boom to stop the sheen from spreading further in the river.

U.S. Coast Guard officials have said there is no immediate environmental threat and that response teams are conducting visual inspections of water quality and collecting samples for testing.

"Pollution and debris removal operations are on-going," a Unified Command statement published Thursday said. "At this time, no atmospheric hazards have been detected and the unified command continues to ensure safety."

Federal government provides $60M in funding for Baltimore bridge rebuild

The federal government is giving Maryland $60 million in emergency funds to rebuild the Francis Scott Key Bridge, Moore announced at a news conference Thursday. Moore said the state had submitted the funding request earlier Thursday for "initial mobilization, operations and debris recovery efforts."

The U.S. Department of Transportation’s Federal Highway Administration said in a news release that the request was approved within hours and the $60 million in “quick release” emergency relief funds will be immediately available for the Maryland Department of Transportation to rebuild the bridge.

The funds will be used as a down payment for initial costs, according to the Federal Highway Administration, and additional funding will be available as operations continue.

Federal Highway Administration Administrator Shailen Bhatt said the emergency funding would go toward managing traffic and supply chain disruptions, removing debris, and ultimately rebuilding the bridge.

While such funding can take days to approve, President Joe Biden had told reporters on Tuesday that he directed the federal government to "move heaven and earth" to quickly rebuild the bridge.

Experts have said the bridge could take years to rebuild and when it opened in 1977, it  cost $60.3 million – which is equivalent to $316 million today.

Bridge collapse expected to have major economic impacts

The Port of Baltimore is a critical area for America's economy and is ranked as the largest vehicle-handling port in the country. The bridge's collapse on Tuesday immediately blocked shipping lanes and forced the indefinite closure of the port.

The economic impact of the bridge's collapse was estimated to be $2 million in wages a day and 8,000 jobs, according to Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg.

Between $100 million and $200 million of cargo passes through the port every day. About 4,000 commercial trucks use the bridge daily, and detours are expected to increase delivery times and fuel costs, according to Oxford Economics.

But with the port's closure, Buttigieg has warned that many longshore workers could be unemployed. Since the collapse, companies have rerouted shipments to other East Coast ports.

Obituaries | Chance Perdomo, star of ‘Chilling Adventures of Sabrina’ and ‘Gen V,’ dies in motorcycle crash at 27

tourist mansion in california

By MALLIKA SEN (Associated Press)

Actor Chance Perdomo, who rose to fame as a star of “Chilling Adventures of Sabrina” and “Gen V,” has died at age 27 following a motorcycle crash.

“On behalf of the family and his representatives, it is with heavy hearts that we share the news of Chance Perdomo’s untimely passing as a result of a motorcycle accident,” a publicist said in a statement issued Saturday evening.

The statement said no one else was involved in the crash. No details about the crash, including when and where it took place, were immediately released.

Perdomo most recently played Andre Anderson on the first season of “Gen V,” the college-centric spin-off of Amazon Prime’s hit series “The Boys,” set in a universe where superheroes are celebrities — and behave as badly as the most notorious. Perdomo’s character was a student at Godolkin University, founded by the sinisterly omnipresent Vought International corporation, where “supes” train; his power involved the manipulation of metal.

Amazon MGM Studios and Sony Pictures Television, the makers of “Gen V,” said the show’s family was “devastated by the sudden passing.”

“We can’t quite wrap our heads around this. For those of us who knew him and worked with him, Chance was always charming and smiling, an enthusiastic force of nature, an incredibly talented performer, and more than anything else, just a very kind, lovely person,” the producers of “Gen V” said in a statement. “Even writing about him in the past tense doesn’t make sense.”

It wasn’t immediately clear from the statements how Perdomo’s death would affect production on the show, which also featured Jaz Sinclair, Patrick Schwarzenegger and Shelley Conn among its sprawling ensemble cast.

Schwarzenegger posted a series of photos of Perdomo and himself on his Instagram stories Sunday morning, saying he hoped Perdomo was “up in heaven with a cigar.”

One of Perdomo’s most famous roles was as Ambrose Spellman, a lead character on “Chilling Adventures of Sabrina.” The four-season show was a far cry from the Melissa Joan Hart-fronted “Sabrina the Teenage Witch.” Created by Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa, the Netflix show set its Archie Comics characters a town over from the titular location of Aguirre-Sacasa’s “Riverdale,” and employed a more spooky and salacious tone than its forerunner — although some of the original “Sabrina” actors came calling.

Perdomo’s character was a cousin to Sabrina Spellman and a powerful, pansexual warlock who specialized in necromancy and is initially under house arrest. He often served as a sort of voice of reason on the show, which wrapped in 2020. He starred alongside Kiernan Shipka, Miranda Otto, Tati Gabrielle, Ross Lynch and, again, Sinclair.

Aguirre-Sacasa posted a tribute to Perdomo on Instagram on Saturday, sharing behind-the-scenes photos from “Sabrina.”

“Besides being one of the most talented young actors I’ve ever had the privilege to work with, @chance_perdomo was, truly, a light. A generous, funny, open-hearted, wildly intelligent, and fiercely complex and soulful human being,” he wrote.

“Oh, how I wish Aunt Zelda’s words were true today (and perhaps they are): ‘There is no true death for witches, only transformation,’” he continued. “Rest in peace, Chance. We all loved you so, so much, cousin.”

Perdomo, who was Black and Latino, was born in Los Angeles and raised in England.

“I was always getting into fights until I put my energy into acting. Then my grades picked up, and I became president of the student union. Before that, I was similar to Ambrose being so pent up. He doesn’t know what to do with his energy because he’s trapped,” Perdomo told them.us in 2018.

“At the same time, he’s very open and loving. I identify with that now more than ever, because being away from family for so long really puts things into perspective. No matter the occasion, if I get that FaceTime or phone call from mom or my brothers, I’m picking it up right away. It’s family first for Ambrose, and I’m the same way,” he continued.

Perdomo also acted in several of the “After” movies and is credited in the upcoming “Bad Man” alongside Seann William Scott and Rob Riggle.

“His passion for the arts and insatiable appetite for life was felt by all who knew him, and his warmth will carry on in those who he loved dearest,” the statement from Perdomo’s publicist said.
