When it comes to smiles, Tom Cruise ‘ s teeth might take the cake. More than three decades into his career, the action star — who has starred in some of Hollywood’s biggest blockbusters , including Mission: Impossible – Fallout and Top Gun   — is still one of the hottest stars, and it’s all thanks to his impeccable acting chops and winning good looks.

But no matter how phenomenal he is as an actor, fans can’t help but notice that Tom’s 100-watt grin has one tooth that’s just a bit out of place. In fact, you can see from photos that his teeth aren’t exactly symmetrical with the center of his face. Many have noticed that Tom’s right front tooth is just a tad askew and has been widely referred to as his “middle tooth” for quite a while now.

Tom has certainly put in the time and effort to achieve the smile he has today. Just after his split from Nicole Kidman in 2001, the Hollywood veteran got braces to address an overbite and misalignment problems. He proudly showed them off while walking the red carpet at the 2002 premiere of Minority Report .

The  Jerry Maguire actor has never been shy about flaunting his less-than-perfect smile. When he played Steve Randle in 1983’s The Outsiders , a young Tom voluntarily removed the cap from a front tooth that had been chipped by a flying puck in a hockey match.

Despite his dental imperfection, Tom has never lacked confidence. In 1985, only a couple of years after his career took off, the genetically blessed star explained why he decided to embrace his newfound sex symbol status. “It doesn’t bother me at all,” he told Entertainment Tonight at the time. “I mean, I don’t, like, resent it. I’m not tortured at night by it. You know, I’m actually very happy that people, you know, think enough of my work to feel that way.”

Fans have never seemed to mind his unique grin. Since he was thrust into the spotlight in the early ‘80s, Tom has remained one of Hollywood’s hunkiest actors. He stepped back into his role of Captain Pete “Maverick” Mitchell in the 2022 film Top Gun: Maverick . The action movie was a huge hit at the box office, becoming the New York native’s first film to gross $1 billion worldwide, per People .

Although it doesn’t seem like it, the Edge of Tomorrow actor — who was just 20 years old at the time — actually started off his career with a set of chompers that were very discolored and extremely unaligned. According to Heightline , Tom initially fixed this issue with teeth whitening and alignment procedures.

Considering Tom has one of the most famous smiles in the world, the actor didn’t want to draw attention to his face while trying to improve his teeth around 2001. Luckily, he was able to opt for invisible braces with ceramic brackets.

Unraveling the Mystery of Tom Cruise's Teeth

From his dazzling smile to his daring stunts, Tom Cruise is an undeniably captivating figure. One aspect of his persona that has piqued the curiosity of many is his unique set of Tom Cruise teeth. What’s the story behind those pearly whites, and how have they transformed over the years? Let’s delve into this fascinating dental journey!

Tom Cruise

Key Takeaways

  • Tom Cruise’s iconic smile was caused by a sports injury!
  • His commitment to personal growth & improvement led him to wear ceramic braces at 40, resulting in his dazzling trademark asymmetrical smile.
  • Tom Cruise’s signature grin has been an integral part of his success as an actor, Wow!

The Origins of Tom Cruise's Unique Smile

Tom Cruise’s teeth have been a topic of intrigue since the beginning of his career. Young Tom’s original set of chompers were far from perfect, with misaligned and discolored teeth due to a sports injury. This less than perfect smile was on full display in his early roles, such as Steve Randle in “The Outsiders”.

The injury caused a noticeable shift in his dental midline, with his central upper teeth not aligning with the center of his face. What was the source of this peculiar misalignment?

The Impact of a Sports Injury

Sports injuries can have various exciting impacts on teeth, including:

  • Tooth fractures
  • Tooth intrusion
  • Temporomandibular joint dislocation
  • Missing tooth, which may require orthodontic treatment, especially when it involves the two central upper teeth

In Tom Cruise’s case, a flying hockey puck during a match caused him to lose a tooth on the left side, resulting in a midline shift and misaligned teeth, including Tom Cruise’s middle tooth, which has become famous.

Athletes like young Tom should take precautions such as wearing mouthguards to prevent these injuries, even if they dream of becoming Hollywood stars like Cruise in “Top Gun”. In fact, young tom voluntarily removed his mouthguard once, realizing the importance of safety in sports.

Tom Cruise's Dental Journey

Over the years, Tom Cruise underwent various dental procedures to improve his smile, including teeth whitening and alignment operations. This dental journey led to a more aesthetically pleasing appearance, making his red carpet appearance even more stunning.

One of the most notable steps in Tom Cruise’s fix journey was when he opted for braces at the age of 40. The question arises, why did he opt for braces at a relatively late age?

Ceramic Braces at 40

Tom Cruise braces

In 2002, Tom Cruise made the bold decision to wear ceramic braces to enhance his dental midline and overall smile. His braces became a topic of discussion during red carpet appearances and interviews, with the Hollywood veteran even joking about his teeth on David Letterman’s show. Tom Cruise wore the braces from January to October of the same year, proving that it’s never too late to make a change to improve one’s appearance.

While some might find it unusual to see a 40-year-old with braces, Cruise’s resolve to pursue his dental transformation showcases his dedication to personal refinement and perfection. This Tom Cruise fix had dual benefits - it corrected his dental midline and mitigated the issue of a single prominent front tooth, enabling him to present a more balanced smile for the camera. With the Tom Cruise fixed smile, he continues to captivate audiences worldwide.

Analyzing Tom Cruise's Asymmetrical Smile

Despite numerous dental treatments, Tom Cruise’s smile remains asymmetrical, with his left incisor appearing larger than the right one. This unique feature adds a certain charm to his smile and sets him apart from other Hollywood stars. It’s a reminder of the fact that even the most famous actors aren’t entirely perfect.

Even though his smile lacks perfect symmetry, it has turned into an iconic trademark of Tom Cruise’s persona. His teeth, once misaligned and discolored, have been transformed into a dazzling smile that has captivated audiences for decades.

The Evolution of Tom Cruise's Teeth Through the Years

Tom Cruise’s teeth have undergone a significant transformation over the years, with noticeable improvements in color, alignment, and symmetry. From his misaligned teeth in the early 1980s to his improved grin in the early 2000s, Tom Cruise’s dental journey has been nothing short of remarkable.

The transformation of his teeth stands as a tribute to the advancements in modern dentistry and the perseverance of celebrities like Tom Cruise in upholding their image. Today, his smile is admired by fans and dental professionals alike, demonstrating how far dental treatments have come in recent decades.

Notable Moments in Tom Cruise's Dental History

Key moments in Tom Cruise’s dental journey include his natural teeth in “The Outsiders”, his ceramic braces in 2002, and his more symmetrical smile in 2016. These milestones showcase the dedication and effort it took for Tom Cruise to achieve his current smile.

It’s intriguing to ponder the influence of these dental transformations on shaping Tom Cruise’s image and in solidifying his enduring success in the acting realm. From his early days in Hollywood to his current status as an icon, Tom Cruise’s teeth have played a significant role in his journey.

Comparing Dental Solutions: Crowns vs. Veneers

Tom Cruise likely chose dental crowns over veneers due to the extent of damage to his teeth, as crowns offer more protection than veneers. Veneers only cover the front surface of the teeth, while crowns offer more protection and are better suited for cases like Cruise’s, where teeth have sustained significant damage.

Choosing crowns over veneers indicates Tom Cruise’s commitment towards not just enhancing his looks, but also preserving the health and lifespan of his teeth. His dental journey is one of both aesthetic enhancement and functional restoration, showcasing the importance of making informed choices when it comes to dental treatments.

Tom Cruise's Thoughts on His Dental Work

While Tom Cruise has never explicitly discussed his dental work, it is known that he opted for braces at the age of 40 to improve his smile. His decision to undergo various dental treatments throughout his career and his dedication to maintaining a dazzling smile demonstrate his commitment to personal growth and improvement.

Although he hasn’t vocalized about his dental journey, his actions communicate his intent more eloquently.

Alternative Dental Treatments for Tom Cruise

The consideration for alternative dental treatments, such as implants, might have been on the table for Tom Cruise. However, time constraints due to his career may have been a factor in his decision-making process. With a busy schedule and numerous film commitments, Tom Cruise needed dental solutions that would provide the best results in the shortest amount of time.

Other dental treatments, such as veneers, bonding, and dental implants, could also have been options for Tom Cruise. Ultimately, his dental journey showcases the importance of finding the right balance between aesthetic improvement, functionality, and time management when it comes to dental care.

The Influence of Tom Cruise's Smile on His Career

Tom Cruise’s smile, despite its imperfections, has become an iconic part of his image and has not hindered his successful acting career. In fact, his unique smile may have added to his charm and appeal as an actor, setting him apart from other Hollywood stars.

Spanning from “Risky Business” to “Jerry Maguire” and further, Tom Cruise’s mesmerizing smile has played a crucial role in his cinematic charisma. His dental journey serves as a reminder that even the most famous actors have their imperfections, and embracing these unique features can be a powerful way to stand out in a competitive industry.

Tom Cruise’s dental journey is a fascinating exploration of the power of modern dentistry and the dedication of celebrities to maintain their image. Deal of the Day

During an interview at The Mummy fan event in New York City, Tom flashed a smile showing off his pearly whites. You can tell from looking up close that his right incisor lines up with his nose. While Tom has never come out and stated exactly what he had done, many dentists speculate that, on top of his braces, he received porcelain veneers and most likely had whitening treatments.

There’s a reason Tom Cruise’s smile is irresistible: his confidence.

You know, I’m actually very happy that people, you know, think enough of my work to feel that way.” His choice to embrace the public perception of his appearance has only driven success to his career, even now in 2018.

Many fans are also surprised to find out that Tom is actually only 5 feet 7 inches tall, which isn’t the “typical size” of someone you’d think would play Jack Reacher. In a previous interview, Tom was forced to open up about how his unconventional body type for superhero roles. “You know, [author Lee Child] created the character,” he said. “I had my own opinion that I didn’t say to Lee and then he came back and pretty much reflected what I had felt about it. But had he said ‘look I’d rather not,’ I would not have played the character.”

What Really Happened To Tom Cruise's Teeth?

Tom Cruise smiling

When Tom Cruise emerged in Hollywood in the '80s , he quickly became not only one of the industry's most prominent leading men but also one of the decade's most recognizable sex symbols. Apparently, Cruise took that status very seriously. Even before breaking through with 1983's "Risky Business," Cruise had always been rather conscious of how he looked in front of the camera, his old agent Eileen Berlin told the Daily Mail in February 2022. "Tommy had many faces — you see it in the photos," the retired executive said.

According to Berlin, with whom Cruise lived when he was starting out at 18, Cruise relentlessly prepared before photo sessions, in an effort to emphasize what he considered to be his strongest features. "We had a mirrored wall and he'd walk around in his little jockey shorts and nothing else and ball up his fists and flex his biceps and admire himself in the mirror," she described. While he knew he was handsome, Cruise was self-conscious about his height . "He said he would like some shoes that would lift him up a bit," she said.

Cruise has reportedly gone to great lengths to conceal his 5 foot, 7 inch stature, often making producers apply different techniques to make him appear as tall as his co-stars, according to Refinery29 . In light of Cruise's perceived vanity, rumors about plastic surgery and other corrective procedures has followed him throughout his career. That even includes Cruise's smile, with many contending his grin has changed over the years.

Everyone has an opinion about Tom Cruise's front teeth

Tom Cruise's smile was a big part of the boyish charm that made him so popular in the '80s and '90s. But his wasn't what most would call a perfect smile. As seen in the photo above, Cruise's front teeth aren't aligned with the center of his face, giving the impression Cruise has a "mono-tooth," as  Metro described. "The mid point between his two central upper teeth (the dental midline) did not match the midline of his face, giving him the appearance of a single prominent front tooth," said Dr. Asif Chatoo of  The London Lingual Orthodontic Clinic .

Some believe the trait was less pronounced in his early career , leading experts to conjecture that Cruise has undergone upper jaw surgery, Showbiz Cheat Sheet noted. Additionally, the perceived changes in color and texture of Cruise's teeth has given way to theories he has used porcelain veneers, according to Life & Style magazine. Others have also suggested he has whitened his teeth, but, honestly, who in showbiz hasn't? It was Hollywood that popularized the practice to begin with, U.K. clinic St. Peter's Lodge  noted.

But, just as Cruise has never addressed his supposed insecurity about his height, he also doesn't really comment on his smile. The only concrete evidence we have of anything he's done comes from the 2002 "Minority Report" premiere, where he was photographed wearing braces that he got to help correct an overbite. "My mouth wasn't closing properly," he said (via  Time ).

Tom Cruise inspired cosmetic surgery rumors as recently as 2021

Tom Cruise's looks drew unwanted public attention in October 2021 when he attended a baseball game, Page Six reported. The "Mission Impossible" star's face looked swollen, leading many to wonder whether Cruise had had cosmetics procedures done or gained weight. Social media users took to Twitter to mock his appearance, drawing comparisons to Norm MacDonald, who had recently died . "Norm macdonald being reincarnated into tom cruise is one of his best bits ever," one wrote .

However, many others defended Cruise while criticizing the normalization of online body-shaming. "I had hoped people learnt to not comment on men's bodies after mocking Zac Efron for gaining weight and supposedly being 'ugly,' despite knowing his history of eating disorders, addiction and body image struggles," one user tweeted . "Leave Tom Cruise and his face alone. People are allowed to change."

But because Cruise had been spotted over the summer with his so-called normal face and it seemingly returned to what fans were used to shortly after, experts hypothesized the swelling could've been caused by cosmetics treatments. "Tom definitely looks swollen and puffy, which could be due to filler, post procedure swelling or weight gain," a practitioner told The U.S. Sun . Some social media users had an issue with this type of coverage, which seemed to disregard the possibility Cruise's swelling could be due to medical reasons. "He looks like he's on prednisone to me," a Twitter user pointed out, referring to the commonly prescribed corticosteroid.

Cruise could easily shift gears, playing a bad-boy heartthrob ( Top Gun ), a heartbreaking war veteran ( Born on the Fourth of July ), and a sci-fi hero ( War of the Worlds ) with equal gusto.

But his role as a super-spy Ethan Hunt in Mission: Impossible launched Cruise into the highest echelon of stardom. The franchise has grossed over $3.5 billion to date and is rated as the 16th highest-grossing film series of all time.

There is no question that Cruise’s good looks and charisma play a huge part in his success. Some outlets estimate that the actor has a net worth as high as $600 million . It wouldn’t be a shock to learn that he’s tweaked his appearance over the years to maintain a top spot in Hollywood’s pantheon.

What’s Up With Tom Cruise’s Teeth?

The earliest giveaway of Tom Cruise’s imperfect teeth is in the 1983 movie The Outsiders . To fit the role of working-class greaser Steve Randle, Cruise voluntarily removed a cap while filming (his front tooth had been chipped from a flying hockey puck—ouch!)

His chompers were also anything but pearly white. Check out his earliest roles in the 1980s and you’ll notice that his teeth are discolored with a yellow hue. However, it’s unlikely that Cruise turned to drugstore whitening strips to solve the problem. Dental experts believe that he had porcelain veneers applied for a fast makeover.

And who could forget Cruise’s brace-face era? At the 2002 premiere of Minority Report , the actor proudly flashed his mega-watt smile on the red carpet, revealing a set of wire-bound upper teeth. We credit him for being carefree about his efforts at self-improvement.

Tom Cruise’s Misaligned Smile

One particular flaw in Tom Cruise’s smile that people seem to obsess over is its misalignment. Look closely and you’ll notice that his teeth shift off-center. The result? The appearance of a “unitooth” that lines up dead-center with his cupid’s bow (it’s actually his right front tooth). To make matters worse, it’s significantly larger than his other front tooth, which draws attention to the asymmetry.

But braces, veneers, and caps—you name it, he’s probably done it—haven’t managed to fix this one issue. And that’s probably fine by him. As we all know, Tom Cruise’s teeth have hardly stood in the way of his fame. He’s already sealed his reputation as a Hollywood success story. We also suspect there are plenty of people who’d overlook a dental quirk to nab a date with him.

Tom Cruise’s Dental Journey — What’s Up With His Middle Tooth?

Tom Cruise has been flashing his classic cocky grin for decades — but have you noticed that it’s misaligned? As Cruise bursts back into the spotlight with Top Gun: Maverick , we’re still wondering about his mysterious “middle tooth.”

A hockey accident.

legend tom cruise teeth

Long before Tom Cruise became  an ever-bankable action star , he was Steve Randle in  The Outsiders . And, amidst a cast full of fresh-faced brat pack hunks , it’s his unique set of chompers that set the young actor apart.

Cruise was injured in a hockey accident when he was young — hit by a flying puck — which left his front tooth chipped. And when filming The Outsiders , he decided to remove the cap that covered the crack. The result was purposefully unattractive, as Cruise meant to emulate his dirt-poor greaser character. And though The Outsiders was Cruise’s third movie, the 1983 film marked the first noticeable showcase for his unique mouth.

Corrective Procedures

As Tom Cruise’s career progressed, it’s clear that he received some orthodontic treatments. In addition to getting the original chip filled in, his teeth were whitened and straightened. Famously, in 2002, the then-40-year-old donned adult braces at the Minority Report premiere. Twenty years on, it may seem shocking; less noticeable options like Invisalign are now quite common. But for the time, Cruise’s bracket-less upper braces were actually a subtle choice.

legend tom cruise teeth

Still, even after braces, Cruise’s signature smile was not quite perfect. His midline is off, creating the appearance of a so-called “middle tooth.” In the video above, a doctor from Premier Orthodontics breaks it down.

The average person has seven teeth on each side on each of their midline. But if you count Cruise’s teeth, it’s apparent that he’s missing the second pre-molar on his left side. (That would be the third tooth from the back.) Naturally, then, when Cruise lost his baby tooth the teeth around it would slide in toward that space… resulting in a midline that’s shifted roughly half-a-tooth toward the left.

And it’s not so uncommon — roughly 3% of the population has a missing tooth.

But since Tom Cruise is, well, Tom Cruise, the obvious next question is… Why doesn’t he get it fixed? The man has an estimated net worth of $600 million! But those options would require another, a longer period of more intense braces.

Tom Cruise’s Adult Braces

legend tom cruise teeth

Open-coiled springs are one option. The small springs could be wedged into the braces, around the missing premolar, to slowly open up space for a dental implant to be added. In all, the process would take around two years. And two years as a metal mouth is a lot for a man who’s bringing in hundreds of millions at the box office — at age 59!

Regardless of the alignment of his teeth, or his missing premolar, one thing is for sure: Tom Cruise has the smile of a movie star.

Tom Cruise Teeth – The Truth About The Actor’s Distinctive Misaligned Middle Tooth Revealed

Stephanie Ugwu

Tom Cruise was born with a severe teeth defect. His front middle teeth were distinctively misaligned, and everything was yellow when he first came onto the acting scene. He had also suffered a crack on his teeth from a flying hockey puck when he played hockey as a teenager. This gave the actor a crooked smile but all that has since changed as he worked on his teeth.

The veteran Hollywood movie star has since captured a large fan base with his perfect smile and the action-packed roles he usually plays in movies. His smiles are one that he doesn’t hesitate to flaunt to the public.

The History Of Tom Cruise’s Teeth

Tom Cruise was born with a severe teeth defect, which showcased a disarranged front teeth with a yellowish color that was different from the rest of the teeth. Apart from the teeth defect, he also got a cracked tooth from a flying hockey puck when he played hockey. The young Cruise moved over to New York from Canada when he got to the age of 18. He first worked as a busboy before picking up a career in acting.

legend tom cruise teeth

His first appearance was in 1981 in the film Endless Love . His teeth defects were still the same, though it was not noticeable in the film. Tom Cruise also featured the same year in the film Taps where he played the role of a cadet captain with his teeth defect. Throughout the first stage of his acting career, he had terrible yellowish and disarranged broken front teeth and a little cover on the fractured part of his front teeth.

In 1982, the actor kicked off proper with a career in acting, not minding his terrible teeth defect. He spent a lot to see that he got a perfect set of teeth that would accompany his smiles and started treating his teeth with teeth whiteners and braces.

Tom Cruise’s teeth defects became noticed by the public in the role that he played as Steve Randle in The Outsiders , which he featured in 1983. He got to play the part in the movie because of a unique position that demanded he removes the cap covering one of his front teeth that were as a result of the crack he obtained when he played hockey.

Tom Cruise’s Efforts To Correct His Teeth After Becoming A Star

legend tom cruise teeth

On getting to a level in his career, especially during his movie role in Top Guns where he featured as a navy jet pilot, his teeth were seen to be straighter than before. He first began his teeth treatment by applying dental porcelain laminates to reduce the yellowish stains which were seen on some parts of his teeth. He was keen to find a lasting solution to the disarranged teeth and was spotted on the red carpet flaunting teeth braces which he wore with the intention of straightening his teeth.

Orthodontists are generally known to help children fix teeth misalignments using braces to ease pressure on temporomandibular joints. In 2002, the Mission Impossible actor took up this procedure to align his upper teeth and cover the cracked part of the teeth. These invisible braces have ceramic brackets similar to metal braces which use tooth-colored brackets instead of gray metal brackets.

Tom Cruise wasn’t doing all these to boost self-esteem or public confidence as he has been flaunting his defective teeth in red carpets. It was all an effort to give out the best smile that would correspond to his attractive facial outlook. He used this brace for almost two years before the completion of his treatment. It is noteworthy that he resorted to teeth braces because he didn’t want to draw the attention of the public to his face while undergoing the teeth correction processes.

By 2012, Tom Cruise, who never seizes to captivate people with his smiles, was spotted flaunting more improved white teeth on the red carpet and in a charity event. However, he chooses to keep his treatment processes under the radar and has not publicly discussed how he treated the teeth defect.

His fans suspected that he took a severe dental treatment with the use of dental veneers. The dental veneers are used to treat root canals, stains from tetracycline or large resin fillings, excessive fluoride, or other causes of teeth discolor, worn out, broken, misaligned, and gap teeth. The dental veneers convinced Tom’s fans that it could be the magic behind his sudden teeth reborn.

Tom Cruise’s Disarranged Teeth After Dental Treatment

legend tom cruise teeth

Most people going through this procedure for teeth treatment fail to focus more on identifying the straight line between the nose pointer down to the dental midline and make sure it is well aligned to have a perfect match. This problem was the case with Tom Cruise after his treatment.

Despite the effort, time, and resources invested by him in getting over the teeth defect, he had two notable errors after undergoing dental treatment. One was that the dental midline and the facial midline were thoughtfully separated, which means that his nose point and the part of his front teeth were in the same line. This teeth misalignment is a severe defect in dental treatment. The other shortcoming is that one of his incisors was longer than the other, which is usually corrected better during a proper dental treatment.

Tom Cruise has received a lot of claims about his teeth but hasn’t made any statement concerning these claims online. It has been pointed out that the claims about his teeth were true and this has prompted him to keep mute about the whole thing. But the reality remains that he is still showcasing his smile. In any event that he attends without loss of self-esteem on his teeth. The misalignment has also served as a means of advertisement for many orthodontists as they usually point out the final mismatch.

Tom Cruise's teeth before and after

How Tom Cruise Got His Teeth Done

Being one of the biggest stars in Hollywood, Tom Cruise is no stranger to rumours and controversies.

Tom Cruise’s teeth have been at the centre of it from time and time again. Known for his dashingly good looks and versatility as an actor, the megastar is still flying high even as he approaches his 60s.

Even though the Top Gun star’s looks have changed dramatically throughout the years, it’s his teeth that are always left people with a lot of questions.

So, let’s find out what’s really going on with them.

Who Is Tom Cruise?

Thomas Cruise Mapother IV was born in 1962 in New York and later took on the stage name Tom Cruise.

Since his father was a part of the Canadian Armed Forces, he grew up in Canada, where his interest in acting was first cultivated.

Dubbed “Hollywood’s last real movie star,” he is the stuff of legends.

Tom Cruise

He’s been gracing the big screen since the 80s, smashing out one hit after another, not letting any of his personal life drama or even his age deter him.

Despite being on top of his game, he has managed to stay elusive, not accounting for the display of some “bizarre” moments here and there.

It was at the age of 18 that he seriously started to pursue acting, for which he first went to New York and then Los Angeles (LA) – synonymous with Hollywood itself.

Tom Cruise’s Professional Career

Tom got his first role in Brooke Shields’ Endless Love as Billy. However, he went on to play more prominent roles in Taps and The Outsiders . But it was his breakout role in Top Gun that got everyone’s attention.

From there on, it was an upward trajectory for the action star, who went out to star in the critically acclaimed Rain Man, Risky Business, The Color of Money, Born on the Fourth of July, Jerry Maguire , and Magnolia , among many others.

He has also been a part of some of the biggest movie franchises, the most successful of them being Mission Impossible , in which he has done many life-endangering stunts as his character Ethan Hunt.

While Mission Impossible 8 is still in the works, he recently starred in part 2 of the cult classic Top Gun .

It goes without saying that this Hollywood A-lister is one of the highest-paid and highest-grossing actors of all time.

He has also won Golden Globes and received nominations for the Academy Awards and British Academy Film Awards. More recently, he was given an honorary Palme d’Or at the Cannes film festival 2022.

Does Tom Cruise Have A Tooth Gap?

From a very young age, Tom Cruise’s teeth weren’t exactly “Hollywood dazzling.” They were misaligned and chipped with a pronounced overbite . However, before making his way to Hollywood, he got some dental work done.

We know that was the case because reportedly, he removed the “cap” (another name for dental crown ) from one of his front teeth (probably the one on the right) to add to his character of Steve Randle in The Outsiders .

It is believed that his teeth were badly damaged as a result of a sports injury involving a hockey puck. The actor did play hockey when he was young, so it’s possible that he knocked his teeth out as a result of that.

A missing tooth on the left side of his upper jaw is also the reason why he has the “middle tooth.” His teeth have shifted to the left, which is why his dental midline is also to the left.

Tom Cruises teeth

This is actually something that happens when people are missing their teeth. The surrounding teeth shift into the space left behind, which can make them misaligned and crooked.

There are also some other stories about Tom Cruise’s teeth. One involves the former editor-in-chief of The New York Post, Col Allan. Apparently, Tom Cruise’s front teeth fell out when he was having drinks with the journalist.

Allan recounts being “speechless” because of the incident.

At that time, Cruise told Allan that he had lost his teeth after one of his children’s heels struck them while he was playing with them. While the actor had reportedly “pleaded” that the information not be made public, that, unfortunately, is not the case anymore.

How Did Tom Cruise Fix His Teeth?

It is believed that the Mission Impossible star had crowns on his teeth. However, it is possible for people to get both crowns and veneers at the same time.

What will suit them better will depend on the condition of their teeth, their location and the severity of their problem. But veneers can also effectively hide the teeth, although it only covers their front surface.

Other than that, Tom Cruise may also have had a teeth whitening procedure.

Despite him having a “unitooth” and not the traditionally “perfect” teeth, there are many people who admire his million-dollar smile.

Tom Cruise unitooth 2006

And the reason why it dazzles so maybe teeth whitening treatments.

Keep in mind that dental restorations like crowns and veneers cannot be whitened. You have to take care of your teeth.

And for them to not look too white and stand out from the rest, many people get teeth whitening procedures done.

Did Tom Cruise Have Teeth Surgery?

Tom Cruise’s teeth have undergone a variety of changes during the course of his career. As mentioned before, he had dental crowns at the time of The Outsiders .

Dental crowns usually last for 10-15 years, so he would have needed them replaced. Other than that, his wearing braces at the 2002 premiere of Minority Report is the most widely circulated evidence of him getting dental work done.

Tom Cruise 2002 braces

He had ceramic braces at the time since they blend in more with the natural teeth.

From his pictures, you can see that the brackets on his teeth are transparent. Although there’s something else to see if you closely look at his photos from that time: his gums. They appear even.

However, if you look at the photos of Tom Cruise’s teeth now, the gum tissue on his left central incisor is more than that on his right central incisor.

Tom Cruise teeth 2003

The size of the tooth has also changed. The right tooth is bigger than the left one.

Tom Cruises teeth in 2015

It is possible that the actor had a crown lengthening or gingivectomy procedure in later years.

Some people need these before getting dental crowns. Gingivectomy treatment involves the removal of gum tissue above the tooth so that more of its structure is exposed.

This provides a greater surface area to the crown for bonding and anchorage. It may be the reason why his gum line is not even anymore and why the size of his one tooth is now bigger than before.

Does Tom Cruise Have T eeth Veneers?

It’s more likely that Tom Cruise has dental crowns instead of veneers. That’s because, unlike crowns, veneers only cover the front surface of the teeth.

And considering how damaged his tooth was, Tom Cruise’s dentist might have also recommended him a crown to protect the underlying tooth (provided it’s still there).

Tom Cruises teeth in 2018

Tom Cruise’s veneers wouldn’t have been able to do that as effectively. Although if he did get veneers, Tom Cruise’s veneer teeth would have looked just as natural (not considering the misalignment).

Has Tom Cruise Ever Said Anything About His Teeth?

Tom Cruise remains elusive to this day. The actor hasn’t confirmed or denied anything about his teeth.

We only know that he had work done from his pictures and the fact that he very publicly got braces at the age of 40.

There are many rumours about the Minority Report star that he hasn’t ever said anything about.

Despite being in the spotlight for more than 40 years, there isn’t much that people know about him. There was a time when people thought that he had a rhinoplasty or nose job.

However, in an interview with Playboy Magazine, he made it clear that it wasn’t the case and “never would” be.

Did Tom Cruise Seek the Right Dental Procedures?

As mentioned before, Tom Cruise does have a million-dollar smile. His dentists would have tried their best to make what they could out of his situation.

It may not have been possible for him to undergo more invasive and extensive procedures because of the time constraints his career put on him. He has constantly been in the spotlight since the 80s.

That said, the actor’s midline could have been better if he had had an implant after he had lost his tooth.

The implants would have acted as a substitute for the natural tooth and not allowed the surrounding teeth to shift. Plus, dental implants Turkey would cost him a little.

With a crown placed on top of the titanium screw, Tom Cruise’s smile teeth would have looked even more glamorous since his midline would have been at the centre of his face.

Concluding Remarks

Tom Cruise’s teeth have been the subject of much debate and discussion by his fans. His teeth certainly deviate from the Hollywood norm. However, looking back at his photos, you can see that from a very young age, Tom Cruise’s teeth alignment was not normal.

Of course, that would have been a problem once he started appearing in big movies, so he got his teeth fixed through cosmetic restorations like crowns or veneers or both.

Still, Tom Cruise’s dental midline (the parting line between the two front teeth) is shifted to the left. This has been the case from the very beginning and remains so to this day.

His dentists would have tried their best to do what they could with his teeth in a short amount of time, and his smile does look great.

And the good news?

Well, he has plenty of money so he was able to undergo cosmetic dentistry and have all his choppers all aligned nicely.

If you want to know why he – and many other people – feel the need to do this, read on, my friend.

Here are some facts about Tom Cruise’s teeth – and a couple of photos to boot.

Let’s get started.

Tom Cruise Original Teeth

Let me set the record straight.

Tom Cruise isn’t perfect.

Yes, he was born with poor teeth alignment. The cupid’s bow of his lip shows the former asymmetry in his young smile.

Tom Cruise’s unique teeth weren’t always aligned as beautifully as the way you see him in red carpet events.

To achieve that so-called “million-dollar smile,” young Tom had to put on braces.

Tom Cruise Teeth

…and we all know how excruciating that is.

Turns out , he underwent cosmetic dentistry just like many others. For what, you may ask?

Well, you know why.

Tom Cruise’s Smile – to achieve that beautiful smile he so wanted to have – opted to undergo the procedures early in his career.

Wise choice, I reckon!

That’s why you may be shocked to see the photo above.

Well, as cliche as it may sound, we can’t always have everything.

The procedures involved whitening, bonding, fixed bridges, crowns, veneers, and dental implants. He endured all these for the sake of having that “perfect smile.”

Not to mention, it’s one pricey endeavor!

Tom Cruise Middle Tooth (Or One Strange Tooth)

Tom Cruise Teeth

What’s with your middle tooth, Tom?

One smile is all it takes to know how long – and how big – your front gnashers are.

And just like everything else that makes each human unique, your front top teeth will differ from one another.

Try smiling in front of the mirror. Does one front tooth protrude in a different direction? Does it have discoloration? If you’re a non-celeb, well, that likely won’t matter one tiny bit.

But apparently, if you’re an A-list celebrity – let alone the Tom Cruise – well, it matters…a lot!

Now, Tom Cruise has a set of choppers with the “right” color, size, and shape (at least according to his stardom’s standards).

However, it wasn’t always that way.

See that one front tooth over there?

If you take a picture of Tom and examine the center of his face closely, you’ll notice he has a big white middle tooth. Yup, there it is, front and center!

Bear in mind, though, in the celebrity world, having the best smile and fangs is essential.

…especially among singers, actors, players, models, etc.

Celebrities have to have that million-dollar smile.

That’s why most, if not all, move mountains to fix whatever needs to be fixed – tooth or not.

As unpleasant as it might seem, Tom Cruise middle tooth had always been referred to as a horrible “unitooth” or “mono-tooth.”

The actor’s good looks weren’t always complemented with perfectly-designed choppers.

There, I said it!

Tom Cruise Teeth Have Dental Veneers

When the Top Gun superstar was younger, he wanted to achieve better-looking teeth and a perfect grin with discolored teeth a thing of the past. That’s why he wore braces and dental veneers.

If you don’t know, dental veneers are thin custom-made shells used to cover the surface of the front upper teeth.

Porcelain veneers are often recommended by dentists for a good teeth makeover.

When he received porcelain veneers his damaged, disfigured, and stained choppers were now be a thing of the past in just a snap of a finger!

Tom flashed his sparkly whites for the first time at a Hollywood event after his whitening treatments.

Tom Cruise Teeth

Ha! Sounds good to me. Sign me up for that!

As you can see in the photo above, he’s already flaunting that iconic Tom Cruise ear-to-ear smile.

The smile most people have gotten to witness and love about him.

Tom Cruise’s Invisible Braces

Tom Cruise Teeth 05

No wonder they’re called “invisible braces.”

Later in his career, Tom finally decided to have his misaligned tooth set straight. He jumped onto the braces bandwagon if you couldn’t catch my drift.

In 2002, while at the premiere of his movie Minority Report , fans were shocked to find Tom Cruise with braces.

He only had them for a few months, though.

And after all, they helped him achieve that picture-perfect smile.

He had regular wires with invisible brackets to disguise his teeth alignment procedure. But, of course, every hawk-eyed fan noticed anyway.

Tom Cruise Had Invisalign Teeth Straightening Procedure

The Invisalign straightening procedure involves having removable, transparent plastic aligners.

Most celebrities choose this procedure.

Got you scratching your head too? It’s pricey, I know!

…but anything for the glitz and glamour, right?

I mean, would you want to be photographed looking unflattering?

No? I thought so too.

Sure, they’re much more expensive and much more convenient than regular wire braces. That’s the catch!

Tom Cruise Teeth

The good thing about them, though, is he can sport that stunning look in red carpet events without having to awkwardly smile for the cameras.

…something that you might do for the sake of hiding those wires.

Also, you can remove these plastic aligners anytime you feel the need to.

More Middle Tooth Evidence

Tom Cruise Teeth

A lot of people don’t believe Tom Cruise’s teeth ever underwent a makeover.

Some fanatics even go to the extent of trying to prove the claims to be lies.

First off, who on Earth has totally natural pearly white gnashers ?

If you have, well, props to you!

In most photos circulating the Internet, you can see that Tom’s teeth are bizarrely white!

Ordinary choppers can never be so white without professional help.

Other than that, they should be in tandem with someone’s complexion.

Smile! Show me those famous ‘Tom Cruise Teeth’.

A tad too white, if I may say.

Having a natural smile means having the bottom of the top front teeth equal in length.

However, in Cruise’s case, his two front teeth appear like crowns as they look much more dense compared to a normal set.

His front tooth, after being straightened, lies exactly at the center of his face.

…which is actually off!

For years and years, memes on Tom Cruise’s front tooth have circulated online, causing some “bashers” to call him out for having a “mono-tooth” or “uni-tooth.”

Yes, you read that right! Uni-tooth. Shame!

Tom, despite all his efforts, still has unaligned teeth, but that’s okay.

Others are quick to say he might have had a major upper jaw operation that resulted in a significant shift in his tooth’s alignment.

I mean, who knows, right?

While Cruise has never jumped in to comment on his dental work, this leaves us with just raw speculation.

Well, all I can say is, “Smile, Tom! Never mind the outsiders.” They’re called outsiders for a reason.

Conclusion: Tom Cruise’s Teeth: The Real Story

There you have it! Everything you need to know about Tom Cruise’s Smile and how he overcame his overbite, misalignment problems and general dental imperfection so we could see him smiling big like never before!

We’ve laid out for you the many reasons why Tom is smiling widely from one ear to the other.

Do you know of other celebs that underwent major reconstruction too?

Did they ever come close to Tom Cruise’s A-list status?

Tom Cruise's Teeth Are His Hallmark — Facts about the Actor's Middle Tooth and Smile Makeover

Oyin Balogun

Iconic actor Tom Cruise is known for his dashing good looks, which earned him the reputation of a Hollywood sex symbol. However, his teeth have had to go through years of modification to match his almost perfect good looks.

Apart from starring in some of Hollywood's biggest blockbusters over the last three decades — including "Top Gun" and the "Mission Impossible" franchises — Tom Cruise is known for his dashing good looks and his nearly perfect smile.

However, fans cannot help but notice that beneath Cruise's 100-watt grin, there is a glaring imperfection — a slightly out of place tooth that has undergone modification jobs throughout his career.

TOM CRUISE'S TEETH BEFORE

As a newcomer in the movie world, the young Tom Cruise's teeth were badly discolored and very unaligned. By closely inspecting some of the actor's pictures, it can be seen that his teeth are not symmetrical with the center of his face.

Apart from Tom Cruise, fans have also grown to love several other celebrities with their less-than-perfect smiles.

Additionally, the veteran actor's dentition features a right front tooth that is slightly askew from others. Interestingly, the front tooth has earned some fame through the years and has been dubbed the "middle tooth" by the media.

In an industry that can be described at best as "vain," and overly conscious of physical appearance, Cruise has carried on confidently with his less-than-perfect smile — even flashing it for the cameras every now and then.

Popular Los Angeles dentist Dr. William Dorfman understood the special focus on looks in Hollywood and was famous in the 90s for helping actors get their teeth in line. While speaking on Cruise's teeth, Dorfman said:

"They're terrible. His two front teeth are different sizes. They looked so bad when he was on the cover of last November's GQ that I wrote him a letter saying he should come see me."

Well, it seems Cruise must have paid a visit to the famous dentist because his teeth have undergone some modification jobs throughout his career.

TOM CRUISE'S DENTAL TRANSFORMATION

During his early years as an actor, Cruise initially fixed his dental issues by undergoing teeth whitening and alignment procedures. The whitening helped the talented actor deal with his discolored teeth.

In 2002, after his split from his ex-wife Nicole Kidman, Cruise got braces to reconfigure his misaligned teeth. The braces were nearly invisible, and at the time, his publicist Pat Kingsley revealed the 57-year-old actor would be wearing the orthodontic device for a year.

By 2012, Cruise's teeth had undergone a complete transformation, and the actor showed off his improved dentition at the premiere of "Rock of Ages," and at a charity event in December that year.

Despite the improvements, eagle-eyed fans were still able to notice that aside from his famous "middle tooth," his left incisor looked bigger than his right one.

More recently, the actor's teeth appear to be nearly perfect, much to his fans' admiration. While Cruise has never explained what he did to his teeth, many dentists believe he must have received porcelain veneers in addition to getting braces.

Apart from Tom Cruise, fans have also grown to love several other celebrities with their less-than-perfect smiles. From Lindsay Lohan's gnarly grin to Johnny Depp's mysterious red tooth and Anna Paquin's gap-tooth, these stars pose a hefty challenge for every dentist.

However, like Tom Cruise, they have remained confident in their imperfection and have not let their unique dental features upstage their showbiz careers.

Tom Cruise Teeth Transformation: From Early Days to Hollywood Smile

Tom cruise: a journey through transformations, from smile makeovers to red carpet appearances and speculations on his changing appearance – a comprehensive exploration.

Table of Contents

Tom Cruise Following 'Top Gun: Maverick' with a Musical (and some more Action Movies)

Tom Cruise radiated with his trademark infectious smile and flawless set of pearly whites as he graced the Producers Guild Awards in LA on Monday evening.

However, the renowned A-list actor, who is now 60, didn’t always boast a perfect smile, as evidenced by his misaligned teeth during his younger days before he opted for corrective measures.

Snapshots from his appearance in the 80s film The Outsiders unveiled his less-than-perfect teeth alignment prior to undergoing dental procedures.

Nevertheless, throughout the years, he has meticulously curated an impeccable smile that has become synonymous with his persona as a celebrated film star, ensuring he’s always red carpet ready.

Here, MailOnline presents an insightful glance into the evolution of his dental transformation over the years…

Tom Cruise

In the early 1980s, a young 20-year-old Tom Cruise launched his acting career, characterized by his debut in the industry.

During his early days, like many individuals of his age, Tom faced the challenge of misaligned and discolored teeth.

According to Heightline, Tom initially resolved these issues through various dental procedures, including teeth whitening and alignment treatments.

Notably, his dental symmetry doesn’t perfectly align with the center of his face, a feature that remains noticeable even in recent snapshots of him.

Moreover, during his portrayal of Steve Randle in the 1983 film The Outsiders, a youthful Tom took the initiative to remove the cap from a front tooth that had been chipped due to an incident involving a flying puck during a hockey match.

During the filming of The Outsiders, Cruise believed that showcasing his teeth in their unaltered form would be in line with the portrayal of his street-smart, tough character.

Throughout the movie, his genuine teeth, including a noticeable brown, lifeless tooth at the center of his smile, were prominently featured.

However, in his later cinematic endeavors such as Risky Business , Top Gun , and Cocktail , Cruise opted for a dental cap that covered his teeth, ensuring a flawless appearance in his subsequent blockbuster roles.

Tom Cruise

Following his separation from Nicole Kidman in 2001, the seasoned Hollywood star opted for braces to address issues with overbite and dental misalignment.

He proudly exhibited them while making his way down the red carpet at the premiere of Minority Report in 2002, coinciding with his 40th birthday.

To the surprise of many, the actor confidently sported a visible silver dental brace during his red carpet appearances and interviews.

At the time, Cruise humorously mentioned to David Letterman that the decision was to rectify his persistent overbite, quipping, “I couldn’t close my mouth properly for years, so they finally said, ‘please, shut your mouth.'”

The actor further shared that the suggestion for braces came unexpectedly when he took his children for a dental check-up, only to find out that he could also benefit from the corrective measure.

Wearing the braces from January 2002 until October of the same year, he eventually commenced work on his film of that period, The Last Samurai.

Tom Cruise

Tom Cruise’s captivating smile garnered considerable attention during his presence at the Jerry Bruckheimer Hand and Footprint Ceremony in May 2010.

This marked a notable contrast from 25 years prior, during his appearance in The Outsiders, where he was seen without the dental cap covering the front of his teeth.

Subsequently, Tom’s dental features continued to enhance, evident from his appearance at the Rock of Ages premiere in 2016, showcasing a much more balanced and symmetrical smile.

In another instance, during a benefit screening of his film Jack Reacher: Never Go Back in 2012, observers keenly noted a slight asymmetry, with his left incisor seemingly larger than the right.

Transitioning from the heartthrob star of Top Gun to the moment of the noticeable puffy face, and now a sun-kissed complexion with cascading locks, let’s delve into the ever-evolving appearance of Tom Cruise.

Stepping onto the red carpet at the 95th Annual Oscars Nominees Luncheon this week, the 60-year-old Top Gun: Maverick protagonist unveiled a striking new appearance, a significant departure from his previous public appearances over the past eight months.

Amid the accolades received by the 2022 blockbuster summer film, which garnered multiple Oscar nominations, including a nod for Best Picture, the actor showcased his transformed image, featuring notably longer locks and a distinct sun-kissed glow. His dapper ensemble included a navy blue suit, a corresponding waistcoat, and a crisp white shirt, ensuring an elegant yet contemporary look.

As one of the entertainment industry’s highest-earning performers, Tom Cruise’s on-screen career has endured for more than four decades. Following his breakthrough roles in Risky Business (1983) and Top Gun (1986), he solidified his status as a leading actor in the 1990s with notable performances in The Firm (1993) and Jerry Maguire (1996).

As he embarks on the fifth decade of his illustrious career, MailOnline reflects on the remarkable evolution of Tom’s appearance through the years.

1980S – THE EARLY YEARS

Tom Cruise

Tom Cruise was a youthful 24-year-old when he made his memorable appearance in one of his most iconic films, Top Gun.

The actor secured the pivotal role of Pete ‘Maverick’ Mitchell in the action-packed movie, which soared to become the highest-earning domestic film of the year, grossing an impressive $357 million.

During this era, he appeared in other notable films like The Color Of Money (1986) and All The Right Moves (1983), showcasing a persona that seemed a far cry from his current self.

Reflecting on his sudden rise to fame during this period, Tom candidly shared his experience of grappling with newfound recognition in public.

In an interview with Interview magazine, he confided, ‘I’m naturally a very private person, often lost in my own world. Suddenly, I found myself walking down the street and catching people’s attention, and I couldn’t help but wonder, “Is something hanging out of my nose?”‘

‘It took some time to acclimate to the newfound attention. Filming Legend in England during that time felt surreal. Every small gesture seemed amplified when all eyes were on you,’ he added.

EMERGENCE INTO THE NEW MILLENNIUM – MOVIE STAR

Tom Cruise Wants to Follow Harrison Ford and Make 'Mission: Impossible' Movies Until He’s 80

By this juncture, Tom had firmly established himself as one of the industry’s most prominent stars, showcasing a strikingly sculpted appearance to complement his rising stardom.

The actor exuded an air of a seasoned male model as he graced the Screen Actors Guild Awards that year, earning a nomination for Outstanding Supporting Actor for his performance in the film Magnolia.

During this period, Tom also sported a longer hairstyle, a characteristic style choice that coincided with the final months of his marriage to actress Nicole Kidman.

Simultaneously, it marked the pivotal year when the Mission: Impossible franchise kicked off in earnest, with the successful release of the first sequel, grossing over $500 million at the box office.

MID-2000S – CONTINUING ACHIEVEMENT

Mission Impossible: Tom Cruise's Co-Stars Describe What Cruise is Like Off-Camera

In the mid-2000s, Tom Cruise opted for a more daring appearance, adopting a significantly shorter crew cut that remained his signature look for several years.

This period marked a significant peak in Tom’s career, as he appeared in a string of highly successful films such as The Last Samurai, Collateral, and War of the Worlds.

Simultaneously, he was preparing to make a comeback in the Mission: Impossible franchise, with the third installment hitting screens two years later.

During this phase, Tom also embarked on one of his most publicized relationships, commencing a romance with actress Katie Holmes in April 2005. Their journey took a significant turn when the couple announced the impending arrival of their first child, Suri, in October of the same year, who was eventually born in April 2006.

The duo tied the knot in November, only for Katie to file for divorce five and a half years later, marking the end of their union.

2021 – TOM’S APPEARANCE SPARKS SPECULATION

tom cruise

Tom caused a stir in October 2021 when he was spotted at a San Francisco baseball game, sporting a notably puffy face.

During the LA Dodgers match, the father-of-three’s seemingly fuller face led to conjecture about potential fillers, prompting discussions about his appearance.

Dawn Attewell, a Registered Aesthetics Nurse at therapyhouse.co.uk, shared with FEMAIL that the photographs might have indicated ‘excessive filler’ and ‘post-procedure swelling.’ She also suggested that his refreshed look could be attributed to a ‘hair transplant’ and ‘skin tightening treatments.’

‘In the widely discussed October 2021 image, it was evident that Tom’s face appeared swollen and puffy, possibly due to various factors such as excessive filler, post-procedure swelling, or even natural weight fluctuations.’

‘Surgical procedures like a platysmal plasty, or a neck lift combined with a mid-facelift, could potentially lead to this type of swelling in the areas mentioned.’

However, it didn’t take long for Tom to revert to his usual self, as he made a striking appearance on the red carpet at the Cannes Film Festival in May 2022, displaying a more refined and slimmer appearance.

PRESENT DAY

‘Mission: Impossible’ Director Says Tom Cruise Shared the ‘Weirdest’ Story about Himself

Last year, Tom made a powerful comeback to the spotlight with his first film in four years, Top Gun: Maverick.

The movie raked in over $1 billion at the box office, emerging as the highest-grossing film of his career, earning accolades for its notable improvements over the original.

Tom has once again embraced longer locks and has kept busy in recent months, putting the finishing touches on Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning parts one and two.

While the release for Part one is scheduled for July, devoted fans of the franchise will have to wait until June 2024 for Part two to hit the screens.

Tom Cruise’s Signature Smile Didn't Come Easy: He Had to Overcome Several Dental Flaws

Tom-Cruise-Signature-Smile-Several-Dental-Flaws

Iconic Hollywood superstar Tom Cruise has looks to die for - a stunning face and a charming smile, but the actor has overcome a major dental flaw to flaunt his now perfect smile.

The Middle Tooth

Cruise is undeniably one of Hollywood’s most accomplished actors, but his good looks and contagious smile is another reason he rules the hearts of millions.

However, there is a story behind his picture-perfect smile. The actor spent years to find the right dental solution for the front tooth, perhaps popularly known as the  “middle tooth.”

Many fans have noticed that his front right tooth is a bit out of place. In fact, if you have a closer look at his old movies and portraits, the pictures speak for themselves.

In 2001, just after his breakup with Nicole Kidman, the  Mission Impossible  star got braces to address an overbite and dental misalignment.

View this post on Instagram                       A post shared by Tom Cruise (@tomcruise)

Cruise proudly flaunted his  invisible braces  with ceramic brackets while walking the red carpet of  Minority Repor t Premiere’ in 2002. The artist’s then publicist Pat Kingsley revealed Cruise would wear an orthodontic device for a year.

Even before that, during the shooting of  The Outsiders  (1983), where he played the role of Steve Randle, the then 21-year-old Cruise removed the cap from one of the front teeth that had been chipped by a flying puck in a hockey match.

The Dental Imperfection Never Shook His Confidence

Despite the dental flaw, the 58-year-old never lacked conviction. During his initial days as a Hollywood hero, Cruise mentioned why he happily embraced his newly found sex symbol status.

In a 1985 interview with Entertainment Tonight, he explained that the tag neither bothered him, nor did he particularly like it.

It doesn’t bother me at all. I mean, I don’t, like, resent it. I’m not tortured at night by it. You know, I’m actually very happy that people, you know, think enough of my work to feel that way.

The Transformation

The maverick actor started his career in 1982 with his genetically gifted looks and not-so-perfect smile. According to reports, he initially opted for teeth whitening for his discoloration and alignment procedures.

When he appeared at a public event in 2010 with the completely transformed look, people went head over heels for him. After completing over twenty-five years in the industry, he aced the fresh look.

By 2012, the actor had undergone a complete  dental modification.  At the 2012 premiere of  Rock of Ages , Cruise looked ever so handsome with his newly improved dentition and a fresh haircut. Later in December that year, the actor was also seen at a charity event.

However, the  Mission Impossible  star never opened up about his dental transformation. Many dentists believe he must have received porcelain veneers apart from braces.  Some dentists also suggested that Cruise might have an implant-supported ceramic crown in the area where he lost his tooth.

At 58, Cruise remains a fan-favorite, and the actor is known for his realistic acting skills, fantastic persona, and charismatic looks.

Tom cruise teeth

The accomplished American Actor, Tom Cruise has dominated the screens since the eighties. And while his talent has remained consistent throughout his career. The same can’t be said about Tom Cruise’s teeth. The multiple-times Oscar nominee had an iconic smile. And while it’s been along with his best assets, even Tom Cruise’s smile had a humble beginning.

What was wrong with Tom Cruise’s smile

Tom Cruise’ Smile wasn’t naturally perfect, in fact, it was the contrary. When Cruise first rose to fame, his teeth haven’t had all the work of cosmetic dentistry just yet.

Time Cruise’s smile was remarkably misaligned and one of his incisors was oddly prominent. His dental midline was way off-grid where his upper incisor took over it.

In addition to his misalignment, Time Cruise’s teeth were also very stained. And all in all, his smile wasn’t up to Hollywood’s standard.

How did Tom Cruise fix his teeth

To fix Tom Cruise’s teeth, the actor had to go through many years of treatment to fix his smile. To get the perfect he currently has, Tom Cruise couldn’t opt directly for the Hollywood Smile procedure. Because Tom Cruise’s teeth were severely misaligned, he had to get braces first.

Tom Cruise had braces for his teeth around the time he was 40 and reportedly opted for ceramic braces. These types of braces are usually color-matched to your teeth so they’re not very visible. But this was back in 2002, now there are modern options if you wish to have braces minus the chunky look. There’s the Invisalign as well as bilingual braces.

The braces helped get Tom Cruise’s teeth into proper alignment restoring his dental midline. Orthodontics is always the first part of treatment in cosmetic dentistry. Getting the right alignment helps pave way for additional tweaks to polish your smile. Because when your smile is straight, it’s easier to identify other construction problems and opt for the Hollywood Smile.

While many might assume Tom Cruise was too old around the time he sported braces for his teeth, adult braces are in reality very common.

As for the staining, Tom Cruise’s teeth have had whitening to give them a natural glow. But since then, the actor has upgraded his treatments wearing veneers for the ultimate smile.

The Takeaway

Tom Cruise’s teeth took on a pathway similar to his career, rising into fame and perfection. Tom Cruise fixed his teeth in the early 2000s, so the technologies weren’t half as advanced as they are now. Now not only are there more modern and convenient options, but there are affordable ways of getting cosmetic dentistry. Tom Cruise’s teeth might have cost him a fortune, but you can correct more complicated costs for a trivial sum of money. For instance, you can consider the Hollywood Smile in Turkey, and for very low costs you can receive high-quality dental treatments. Especially at the leading dentistry center in Istanbul, Dentakay.

Tom Cruise’s Monotooth – The Mystery of Tom Cruise’s Weird Middle Tooth

Why does tom cruise have an extra tooth.

Tom Cruise was born with an extra tooth, which is called a supernumerary tooth. The extra tooth is located right in the middle of his two front teeth. It’s unclear why Tom Cruise has this extra tooth, but it’s possible that it’s a result of a genetic anomaly. Tom Cruise’s monotooth has become somewhat of a celebrity in its own right, and it’s even been featured on T-shirts and other merchandise. While Tom Cruise’s monotooth may be a bit of a mystery, it’s certainly not the only one out there. In fact, there are several celebrities who have extra teeth. For example, Madonna has an extra tooth right behind her two front teeth. This extra tooth is called a mesiodens, and it’s actually quite common.

Other celebrities with extra teeth include Hillary Clinton, who has an extra tooth right in front of her two front teeth, and David Beckham, who has an extra tooth right behind his two front teeth.

Where is Tom Cruise’s Monotooth ?

The two front teeth didn’t form properly in the womb, resulting in an extra tooth. Tom has always shown that he can be proud even when he’s not always doing what’s right. Tom saved his tooth when a hockey puck flew into his mouth while he was speaking in “The Outsiders”. He didn’t mind, and we admire him a lot for being willing to do whatever is necessary for his job. Tom didn’t care about it, but we respect his willingness to do what is required to do his job. We respect Tom very much for doing anything that would help him do his job, even if doing so makes him look a bit embarrassed in the media.

What happened to Tom Cruise Teeth?

Tom Cruise’s Teething Problems – From Movie Star to Movie Star Cruise has had several dental procedures done on him, including having an implant placed in the back of his mouth.

Tom Cruise is an actor who has acted in several blockbuster movies. He has also gone through several treatments for his teeth. If you think about people in dentistry who routinely deal with your teeth, it is not surprising to learn the evolution of their smile.

Tom Cruise’s teeth first came to the public’s attention when he played Steve Randle in the 1983 film “The Outsiders”. Cruise had a cap put over one of his teeth in 2003, when he was just eight years old, and it was an accident that had caused the tooth to become discolored. To have that cap put over his front teeth, Cruise reportedly had it implanted by a dentist.

Tom Cruise’s Monotooth

When the film Risky Business was released and then the movie Top Gun was released, his teeth were much straightened. However, his story as a superhero did not end there.

Cruise wore braces to the movie premiere of his movie ‘Minority Report’, proving that even adults can get treatment for their teeth. Tom Cruise had both clear aligners and white braces fitted to his teeth as part of his orthodontic treatment in the 1980s.

Did Tom Cruise have dental work done?

Cruise, who has appeared in many hit movies, had crooked teeth that were difficult to clean. He went to two cosmetic dentists and had teeth whitening done. Cruise went through a number of expensive dental procedures in order to be able to draw huge crowds from Phoenix to Baltimore. He also bought some expensive veneers. In the beginning, he had his teeth coloured and straightened. Then, he was convinced to get veneers. It seemed that even whitening and straightening his teeth was not enough. Tom Cruise has recently purchased a mouthful of custom-made porcelain veneers. Scientologists have spent millions on porcelain veneers.

Why does Tom Cruise have a tooth in the middle of his face?

Tom Cruise is a famous actor in the industry. He is known for his beautiful looks and his adorably glistening smile. Tom Cruise, an accomplished actor, rules the hearts of millions with his enchanting smile. He has also starred in numerous movies. Tom Cruise is considered to be one of the most sought-after actors in showbiz. He is always happy to make people happy. But a good look at his smile will show that he has one odd tooth in the middle.

Tom Cruise is known for his infectious smile and funny looks, but his teeth are missing a few teeth. Tom Cruise has an oddly shaped tooth in the middle of the mouth. It does not line up with the rest of the teeth on the rest of the face. Many people have criticized Tom Cruise for having one of the teeth that is in the middle of their faces. His front teeth are called the middle teeth by many people.

Tom Cruise, who is married to actress Nicole Kidman, got braces to straighten his teeth. His smile is perfect, but some of his teeth look strange. But Tom Cruise was not shy about showing his imperfections. He showed them at the premiere of the movie “Minority Report” in 2002. Tom Cruise proudly displayed his braces while attending the premiere of the movie “Minority Report”.

Tom Cruise, 57, is known for his charming smile, but sometimes he shows some imperfections to show that he is not perfect. Tom Cruise, who was 21 when he took the camera out to film “The Outsiders”, took a bite out of his front tooth, which had been cracked by a flying puck. He always puts 100% of his energy into his job. He always says what’s right for his character, even if it means that he is revealing some of his flaws to the world.

What did Tom Cruise do to his teeth?

Cruise is renowned for his beautiful smile; many people have tried to straighten their teeth using a variety of dental procedures to make it look better. It’s true: You can still look great even when you’re very old. One procedure, in particular, made a big difference in his appearance: braces.

Cruise began having braces when he was 40, just before the film “Minority Report” was released. His results are amazing: About one in five adults who undergo this kind of treatment are at least 65. If there are misaligned teeth, there is a way to correct them even if that means you are 80 years old.

In some ways, orthodontic treatment is like having a “makeover” for a person’s smile: moving the teeth to the proper positions can help the patient look and feel more attractive. If you’re still healthy, you can have braces even as a senior.

He's not always had the perfect smile! As Tom Cruise shows off his beaming grin at the Producers Guild Awards MailOnline takes a look back at his teeth transformation

Tom Cruise showed off his beaming smile and perfect pearly whites as he posed at the Producers Guild Awards in LA on Monday night.

But the A-list movie star, now 60, hasn't always had the best smile - sporting crooked teeth in his younger years before getting them fixed.

Images from his time on the 80s movie The Outsiders showed his far from straight gnashers before having a dental work done.

But over the years he has made sure to curate an impeccable grin to make him film star and red carpet ready.

Here MailOnline takes a look at the transformation of his teeth over the years...

Tom Cruise was just 20 and started his acting career in the early 1980s.

Back then like many young people his teeth were misaligned and were also discoloured.

According to Heightline, Tom initially fixed this issue with teeth whitening and alignment procedures.

His teeth are also not symmetrical with the centre of his face which is something you can still notice when you look at snaps of him now.

In addition, when he played Steve Randle in 1983's The Outsiders, a young Tom voluntarily removed the cap from a front tooth that had been chipped by a flying puck in a hockey match.

As The Outsiders called for Cruise to portray a streetwise brawler, the actor felt that revealing his teeth in their natural state would be fitting for the character.

In the film we see his real teeth, with one brown, dead tooth prominently on display in the middle of his mouth.

The cap came straight back over Cruise's teeth in his subsequent movies, and with blockbusters like Risky Business, Top Gun and Cocktail.

Then after his split from Nicole Kidman in 2001, the Hollywood veteran got braces to address an overbite and misalignment problems.

He proudly showed them off while walking the red carpet at the 2002 premiere of Minority Report. He had just turned 40 at the time.

To the surprise of many the actor arrived on the red carpet and interview circuit wearing his visible silver dental brace.

Cruise said at the time that it was to correct his overbite.

Cruise joked to David Letterman, 'I couldn't close my mouth properly for years, so they finally said, 'please, shut your mouth.''

The actor explained he'd taken his children to a dentist to have their teeth checked out, but to his surprise the dentist instead told Cruise that he could benefit from braces.

He wore the brace starting in January 2002 until the October of that year before beginning work on his film at the time - The Last Samurai.

1980S - THE EARLY YEARS

Tom was a fresh-faced 24-year-old when he appeared in one of his most famous films: Top Gun.

The actor won the lead role of Pete 'Maverick' Mitchell in the action flick, which became the highest-grossing domestic film of the year with $357million.

The star looked worlds away from his current self during this period, which also saw him appear in films like The Color Of Money (1986) and All The Right Moves (1983).

Tom spoke about his rise to fame during this time, saying it was strange being suddenly recognised in the street.

He told Interview magazine: 'I'm really very private, in my own world. Suddenly I was someone walking on the street and people were looking at me and I was thinking, "Jesus, is something hanging out of my nose?"

'It took time to get adjusted to it. It was such a perfect time to do Legend in England. Everyone is looking at you and somehow just moving your hand seems so much more exaggerated.

TURN OF THE MILLENIUM - MOVIE STAR

Tom was firmly established as one of the industry's biggest stars by this time and had a chiselled look to match.

The star looked like a male model when he attended the Screen Actors Guild Awards that year where he was nominated for Outstanding Supporting Actor for his role in Magnolia.

Tom also sported a longer hairstyle during this period, just months before the end of his marriage to actress Nicole Kidman.

This was also the year the Mission: Impossible franchise kicked off in earnest with the release of the first sequel which made over $500million at the box office.

MID-NOUGHTIES - CONTINUED SUCCESS

Tom had gone with a bolder look a few years later, sporting a much shorter crew cut that he would keep for several years.

This decade was one of the busiest for Tom when he apeared in a slew of successful films including The Last Samurai, Collateral, and War of the Worlds.

He was also gearing up for a return to the Mission: Impossible franchise, with the third instalment released two years later.

Tom would soon embark on one of his most highly publicised relationships when he began dating actress Katie Holmes in Apirl 2005.

Just a few months later in October, the couple announced they were expecting their first child, Suri, who was born in April 2006.

They married in November of that year, with Katie filing for divorce five and a half years later.

2021 - TOM'S PUFFY APPPEARANCE RAISES EYEBROWS

Tom raised eyebrows in October 2021 when he attended a baseball game in San Francisco with a noticeably puffier face.

The father-of-three sparked speculation he had fillers after sporting a fuller face during the LA  Dodgers match.

Dawn Attewell, Registered Aesthetics Nurse at therapyhouse.co.uk told FEMAIL the pictures were a result of 'excessive filler' and 'post-procedure swelling' but he now looks fresher thanks to a 'hair transplant' and 'skin tightening treatments'.

'In the infamous October 2021 picture, you can see that Tom looked swollen and puffy, which could be due to excessive filler, post-procedure swelling, or weight gain.'

'Often, surgical procedures such as a platysmal plasty, or neck lift, combined with a mid-facelift could create this type of swelling in these areas.

However, it wasn't long before Tom was back to his old self as he walked the red carpet at the Cannes Film Festival in May 2022 with a slimmed down appearance.

PRESENT DAY

Tom returned to the spotlight last year with his first film in four years, To Gun: Maverick.

The fim made over $1billion at the box office - the higest grossing film of is career - and many critics considered it to be an improvement over the original.

Tom is once again sporting longer locks and has been busy in recent months putting the finishing touches on Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning parts one and two.

Part one is due for release in July while franchise fans will have to wait until June 2024 for part two.

Tom Cruise’s Teeth: A Dental Perspective

Tom Cruise is a Hollywood icon known for his charming smile and captivating on-screen performances. However, his teeth have been a topic of discussion among fans and critics alike. Some have noticed that his pearly whites show some oddities, while others have speculated about possible dental interventions when comparing his current smile to his earlier movies. In this article, we will provide a dental perspective on Tom Cruise’s teeth from his childhood all the way to the present day. This includes exploring the various factors that may have contributed to their current appearance and discussing the different dental procedures that could have been involved.

Tom Cruise’s Teeth: Before Procedures

Tom Cruise's Teeth: Before Procedures

One of the main problems that Tom Cruise faced with his teeth was his severe crowding. This means that there were too many teeth in his mouth for the jaw space that is available. When this happens, the teeth can become crooked. In severe cases, the teeth may even start to push each other out of alignment. Crowding can be separated into three main types:

  • Mild Crowding: Approximately up to 3mm of additional space is needed.
  • Moderate Crowding : Approximately 3mm-6mm of additional space is needed.
  • Severe Crowding: Approximately more than 6mm of additional space is needed.

Severe crowding was certainly the case with Tom Cruise’s teeth, specifically his upper set of teeth. In the before photos, you can see that his teeth are very close together. This is most clearly seen in his two maxillary incisors , which have been pushed forwards and toward his lips.

Crowding can severely affect one’s appearance and self-esteem, but it can also be bad for overall oral health. When the teeth are crowded, they can be difficult to clean properly. This can lead to an increased risk of tooth decay and gum disease.

It is recommended that those with crowded teeth seek treatment from an orthodontist. Treatment options may include braces, expanders, or even extractions, as will be discussed below.

Teeth Discolouration

Another thing that you may have noticed about old photos of Tom Cruise’s teeth is that they are discoloured. While most cases of discolouration are due to the natural use of teeth, such as drinking wine, tea, or coffee, it can also be caused by smoking.

The reason why consuming certain beverages such as wine, tea, and coffee can cause tooth discolouration is due to the presence of certain staining chemicals in these drinks. For example, wine contains chromogens, compounds with strong pigments that stick to the teeth’s enamel, resulting in a yellow or brownish tint. Smoking, on the other hand, releases tar and nicotine into the mouth, which can stain the teeth and give them a yellow or brown appearance. The longer one smokes, the more discoloured their teeth become.

In those with similar discolouration, it is important to practice good oral hygiene habits. This includes brushing your teeth twice a day, flossing daily, and trying to rinse after acidic meals. You should also avoid smoking and excessive drinking. If one wants to whiten their teeth, there are a number of over-the-counter teeth whitening products available, as well as professional whitening treatments that can be done by your dentist.

Orthodontic Treatment and Extraction

Although we did not personally work on Tom Cruise’s teeth, we can see from the after photos that he has had some dental work done and can give our best guess as to what was done.

When facing severe crowding, the only way to fix the problem is through orthodontic treatment. This can be done with traditional braces or with Invisalign. Before undergoing orthodontic treatment, the crowding may have required several teeth to be removed in order to make room for the rest of the teeth, most likely the premolars ( bicuspid teeth ).

Regardless of what type of orthodontic treatment was done, it is clear that Tom Cruise’s teeth have been significantly straightened. This has dramatically improved his smile and overall appearance.

Veneers or Crowns

Another common treatment to fix the appearance of Tom Cruise’s teeth would be to get veneers or crowns . Veneers and crowns are essentially thin shells that are placed on top of someone’s teeth, which must first be worn down using a dental bur. They can be used to change the shape, size, and color of the teeth. If you are considering getting veneers, it is important to consult with a qualified dentist to see if they are right for you. Veneers are not right for everyone and they require maintenance just like your natural teeth.

Tom Cruise’s Teeth: Some Abnormalities Still Visible

Tom Cruise's Teeth: Modern Image

Although Tom Cruise’s teeth look much better now, there are still some issues visible. This is because not all changes to your smile are possible without undergoing severe amounts of dental treatment over significant periods of time. One has to weigh the pros and cons of the time and effort needed to achieve a perfect smile with the minuscule differences that someone will see. Some of the issues we noticed that are still visible include:

Midline Shift Left

One notable feature of Tom Cruise’s teeth is that they appear to have a midline shift towards the left side of his face. The midline of your teeth is an imaginary line that bisects your teeth down the middle. In a perfect smile, the midline of the teeth should match up with the midline of the face. However, in Tom Cruise’s case, the midline of his teeth is shifted slightly to the left.

While it may seem like a minor issue, correcting a midline shift can be challenging and may require extensive orthodontic treatment. Moving all of the teeth back to the right to correct the midline shift would require complex adjustments of the teeth, jaw, and bite, making it an arduous process. Therefore, it is possible that Tom Cruise’s orthodontist decided to leave his teeth with a midline shift rather than attempt to correct it completely, especially if the shift was not causing any functional problems. Ultimately, the decision to leave the midline shift in place may have been a compromise between achieving optimal aesthetics and preserving function and stability.

Central Incisors Canted to the Left

In addition to having a midline shift, Tom Cruise’s teeth also appear to be canted, or tilted, to the left. This can be due to genetics or crowding, as mentioned before. While this may not be immediately noticeable, it can give his smile an asymmetrical appearance.

A Note on Analyzing Tom Cruise’s Teeth

It is important to note that teeth are not immune to the effects of aging, and nobody’s teeth are perfect. Like the rest of your body, your teeth will slowly wear down as you age. Additionally, various lifestyle factors, both inside and outside of a person’s control, can affect one’s teeth. This is no different from the teeth of someone such as Tom Cruise.

This article is designed to give patients a perspective on analyzing Tom Cruise’s teeth from a dental standpoint. This can help inform them about oral health conditions and how they can affect their teeth.
