Map of the Cullinan Heritage Trail

Most of the historical places of interest in Cullinan are within easy walking distance of each other. Start at the History Room situated in the Cullinan Tourism and History Building. On show in this building are objects of historical interest from the village's and mine's past. There is also a DVD with photographs from 1902 as well as footage from a newsreel, dated 1912. The building is situated behind the miners' cottages in Oak Ave. (H13 on the map)

Leave this building and make your way back to Oak Ave, turn left and on your left are the miners' cottages built in 1906 to house the staff of the Premier Mine. Most of these houses are now restaurants or gift shops. The first house on your right was built for the Nederlandsche Bank in about 1903. When the bank moved to its present location, the building was used as a magistrate's court. It now houses tour operators. (H11 on the map)

The next house on your right is believed to have been built for Fred Wells. Fred Wells was one of the first employees of Premier Mine and the earliest photograph taken in 1902 shows Fred with the first diamond pan. He was to gain immortal fame in 1905 when he found the Cullinan Diamond, the largest gem quality diamond ever found. (H10 on the map)

A little further down the road is the open-air mining museum. This displays various items of mining equipment used on the Premier Mine throughout the years. Of particular interest is the armoured vehicle. This vehicle was bought by Premier Mine after the war to pull the empty coal wagons back to the railway siding at Wilge River. The vehicle replaced the oxen which had been doing this job since 1906. (H8 on the map)

Continue down Oak Avenue, and you will see the Presbyterian Church. It was built in 1908 and the corner-stone was laid by Thomas Cullinan. Unfortunately the church is now in the mining area. (H4 on the map)

Presbyterian Church (Cullinan Heritage Society)

Retrace your steps and go through the mining museum past the Lemon Tree Restaurant and you will come to the Catholic Church. This church is called St. Peters. Of particular interest is the series of oil paintings (Stations of the Cross). These were presented to the church by Donald McHardy when his father died in 1913. This church is said to be the oldest Catholic Church in the Pretoria Diocese still in its original position. (H7 on the map)

A little way down this same road is another church. This was originally the NG Kerk. It is now the Lewende Woord. (H6 on the map)

Again retrace your steps back to Oak Avenue. Turn left and continue up the avenue and you will come to the McHardy House Museum. McHardy House was constructed in 1903 and was the first house built in the village. It was built for William McHardy, the first General Manager of the mine, who came to Cullinan from Kimberley with his wife and seven children. William McHardy died in 1913 and Premier Mine granted his wife and children the use of the residence for life. Two spinster daughters, Evalena and May, lived in the house until their deaths within a few days of each other in 1984.

The house has been kept in its original state and has many fine pieces of furniture and photographs in its rooms. Oak Ave gets its name from the oak trees planted by Evalena when she came to the village in 1903. The house is open all days except Tuesday. Volunteers from the Cullinan Heritage Society act as guides. (H12 on the map)

Cullinan boasts a rich History of more than 100 Years. Cullinan became famous with the discovery of the World’s biggest diamond. The Cullinan Diamond was found by Frederick Wells, surface manager of the Premier Diamond Mining Company in Cullinan on 26 January 1905. The stone was named after Sir Thomas Cullinan, the owner of the diamond mine. The second-largest stone cut from the Cullinan diamond is Cullinan II which is set in the Imperial State Crown, made during the coronation of King George VI in 1937. The 317-carat cushion-shaped diamond is the most valuable stone in the crown which was mounted on Queen Elizabeth’s coffin as she lay in state at Westminster Hall, awaiting her funeral on September 19, 2022. The Town of Cullinan offers many outdoor attractions including: Mine tours, walking down Oak Avenue with its Curio Shops, interesting Restaurants and the famous McHardy Museum which has become part of the quaintness of this old Mining Town. Little mining Houses have been restored and are used to still portray the true ambience of this little mining town. One of the features of the Cullinan Recreation Club, which was erected in 1912; are nostalgic murals painted by Italian prisoners of war in 1944. The mine itself covers 0,32 square kilometers and is 500m deep. This is nearly twice the size of the man-mined big hole of Kimberley.

Cullinan in gauteng: more to offer than diamonds (although diamonds will do…).

C C ullinan is a small, well-preserved 19 th -C entury mining town east of Pretoria. Founded in 1902 and named after the founder of the Premier Diamond Mine, Sir Thomas Major Cullinan, this semi-rural community consists of mining families, farmers, artists and, on weekends, bikers and families looking to escape to the country .

Cullinan village, once a farm called Elandsfontein, was acquired by prospector Thomas Cullinan when he established the farm's diamond-bearing potential. It became the Premier (Transvaal) Diamond Mining Company Ltd, now the Cullinan Diamond Mine.

Cullinan village is situated in Dinokeng , the north-east corner of Gauteng province. Its close proximity to Pretoria and Johannesburg, its Victorian charm, and its reputation for yielding some of the largest diamonds ever discovered, make it a fascinating destination.

Quirky and quaint, the town of Cullinan ’ s focal point is Oak Avenue, which is lined with jacaranda and oak trees, cottages with intricate wrought-iron work and picket fences, bric-a-brac shops, restaurants, and the must-visit Jan Harmsgat se Agterplaas (literally, ‘ Jan Harmsgat ’ s back yard’ ), a garden theatre-cum-gallery (and wedding venue) that rarely fails to delight visitors with its junkyard glamour.

Diamond mine tours are de rigueur when visiting Cullinan; choose a surface, motorised, or underground tour of the working mine.

Cullinan ’ s open-cast mine is among the biggest in the world, three times the size of the more famous Kimberley Big Hole. When you ’ ve finished goggling at this enormous crater, visit the Diamond Hub next door, where you'll be able to see diamond-cutting demonstrations and replicas of the mine ’ s most famous gems.

Then you can c heck out the historical and cultural attractions of Cullinan, including murals painted by Italian prisoners of war during the Second World War, St George ’ s Anglican Church designed by Sir Herbert Baker, the Sammy Marks Museum and Cullinan Station.

Dig below Cullinan ’ s surface , and you ’ ll find fascinating stories – the town offers more than its famous diamonds . For instance, you can t ake a local tour with a specialised guide , visit game ranches, enjoy outdoor sports, or even embark on adventure activities and steam train trips.

Cullinan: Historic Mining Village

Claim to fame.

Cullinan is an historic mining village located in the Gauteng province of South Africa, and its claim to fame must surely be that it is the site of the discovery of the world's biggest diamond, named the Cullinan Diamond, for obvious reasons.

cullinan tourism and history

The Cullinan Diamond, as it was called when it was still in one piece, measured an amazing 3.106 carats, equivalent to the size of half a pound of butter (250g). The Premier Diamond Mine, where the mammoth diamond was found, is still operational today.

The mine at Cullinan continues to be the main source of income for many. With the history of its participation in the mining industry along with the architecture and museums in the area, Cullinan plays a major role in the tourism industry of Gauteng.

cullinan tourism and history

Cullinan boasts some charming old wood and iron miner's houses, as well as quaint country style restaurants and craft shops. The old recreation club is also great for visitors, where you can view some fine murals recently discovered behind the boards.

For the more active guest, the Premier Game Reserve, which forms part of the mine property, remains a great place to enjoy game drives, walks, picnics, or even an escorted game viewing horse back ride. Not too far away is the drop zone of the Pretoria Skydiving Club, which is the biggest in South Africa.

Cullinan, Northern Gauteng

The charming little village of Cullinan that has managed to hold on to much of its mine village character - its historic stone and corrugated iron mine workers’ houses, offices and churches a throwback to the mining times of the early 1900s - lies 30 kilometres east of Pretoria , and is a must on anyone’s itinerary when in this part of the world.

Cullinan is famous for the discovery of what became known as the Cullinan Diamond - the largest rough gem-quality diamond ever found. The stone was named after Sir Thomas Cullinan who owned the diamond mine at the time. The stone, bought by the then Transvaal government was presented to King Edward VII and then cut into three large parts, an action deemed rather risky and difficult, but one that gave rise to the Great Star of Africa - the largest polished gem from the stone, also known as Cullinan I.

The second largest gem from the Cullinan stone, known as the Lesser Star of Africa, is the third largest polished diamond in the world and part of the British crown jewels, on display in the Tower of London.

Cullinan’s Oak Avenue, richly lined with both Jacarandas and Oak trees, is a living museum and tribute to this era - beautifully preserved Edwardian period buildings complete with picket fences, cool porches, appealing little gardens and a number of restaurants and coffee shops.

Cullinan still serves the premier mine, located on a rich diamond-bearing kimberlite pipe, the largest in South Africa. The mine is the third largest diamond producer in the country.
