Which are the best ultra-luxury cruise lines?

Discover ultra luxury side of cruising with Seven Seas Explorer

We discuss the significant players endlessly in the mass cruise market offering active and adventurous family cruise vacations. Such as Royal Caribbean Group, Carnival, Norwegian Cruise Lines, MSC Cruises, Holland America, and Celebrity Cruises.

But what if you want to experience something a cut above the rest – an ultra-luxury cruise? And what exactly can you expect?

Quick navigation

Discover your ultra-luxury cruise

How different is it to be on board an ultra-luxury cruise line compared to a regular mainstream cruise or, indeed, an ocean liner ?

The ship you choose will still have the same type of facilities that you find on the larger ships, for example, a gym, spa, lounges, formal dining rooms and buffet-style dining, promenade decks, and sports activities.

There will also be the traditional elements of a regular cruise, such as gala evenings or dinner at the Captain’s Table.

And even though you travel in luxury, outside influences can still affect your cruise experiences, such as poor weather conditions minimizing time on deck or even affecting port calls and excursions.

The big difference you will notice on your ultra-luxury cruise is the exclusivity. This is what you are paying for. Forget value for money in the traditional sense. But when spending all that extra money on an ultra-luxury cruise, you should expect the following as a step-up from the ordinary.

A smaller size ship, a more intimate cruise

Don’t expect a massive suite. The size of the suites must correspond to the size of the ship. And the more exclusive luxury cruise ships are smaller. Do, however, expect excellent quality linens, luxury finishes, and attention to detail in your cabin.

When you’re paying for exclusivity, you can expect the unusual. You will reach smaller ports, such as ancient ports in the Greek Isles, more unusual destinations, and the opportunity to experience ports that are certainly off the beaten cruise trail.

And very often reach the heart of your destination quickly, with less transfer time.

On your ultra-luxury cruise, you will find fewer activities and more low-key entertainment. There are lecture lounges, sometimes a putting green, and relaxation classes if you want to join in and meet new friends looking for a similar experience.

Personal service and attention to detail

Ultra-luxury cruises are more elegant, calm, and sophisticated than regular big-ship cruises.

Due to the high price tag, you are less likely to find families with children. Indeed there are no children’s clubs or activities on board most, but not all, ultra-luxury cruise lines. In addition, there is no hard selling from staff selling photo opportunities or beverage packages.

The personal service with attention to the smallest detail is a wonderful perk. From remembering your favorite drink to knowing how you like your steak cooked, the staff on board are highly trained. And there is often a crew/guest ratio of one to one.

Noticeably, the group numbers for shore excursions are considerably lower than with the large mainstream cruise ships. Rather than 30 to 40 guests per bus, you will find 15-20 guests on average enjoying an excursion.

The whole experience is much more tailormade to suit you and your fellow travelers in your group. It is a wonderful experience with knowledgeable, professional guides.

Ultra-luxury cruise lines – the 6 best for luxurious cruising

So where can you find such a cruise? Look out for news and offers from these six fantastic ultra-luxury cruise lines. The best way to do this is to sign up for cruise line newsletters.

Here are our 7 favorite ultra-luxury cruise lines:

1. Seabourn Cruise Line

Seabourn is an all-suite ultra-luxury cruise line offering a small ship cruise experience.

Depending upon the ship you choose, you will find a maximum of either 400 or 600 guests on board with a high crew-to-guest ratio. And that means personal and attentive service. They also have expedition cruise ships.

Seabourn has a small, modern fleet that visits unusual destinations. And these destinations are highlighted with key-note speakers such as historians, oceanographers, naturalists, and other experts in their field.

On board, you will find each of Seabourn’s luxury ships has the Seabourn square, a meeting place at the heart of the ship. You find comfortable lounges, coffee shops, guest services, and more. It’s a great place to meet fellow cruise guests looking for adventure.

Just like you.

It is a fully immersive experience, so choose your itinerary carefully. You will get to know your destinations intimately, whether it’s an iconic sight or a rare glimpse into a corner of the world you would never have imagined visiting.

And it doesn’t get much better than that.

2. Regent Seven Seas Cruises

Regent Seven Seas, owned by Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings Ltd, have fewer than 750 guests on each of its five cruise ships. They offer all-suite ships, most of which have balconies.

Regent Seven Seas offer an all-inclusive cruise. For most itineraries, your accommodation, dining, gratuities, wifi, ground transfers, 24-hour room service, and some shore excursions are included in the price.

On average, expect two crew members for every three guests on board. And there are lots of perks depending on the class cabin you book. And by perks, we mean things like a personal tour guide for your land adventure when in port.

This ultra-luxury cruise line takes you in quiet, elegant style to corners of the world that you may never expected to visit.

For example, on an Australia and New Zealand cruise, Regent Seven Seas takes you to remote Norfolk Island and the visually stunning beaches of Whitsunday Island, getting right into the small ports and landing on the islands doorstep.

3. Silversea Cruises

The Royal Caribbean Group operates Silversea Cruises. Offering award-winning, all-inclusive cruises on a fleet of 10 intimate ships (with other ships planned), they cover 900 destinations across all seven continents, including Antarctica.

They are all-suite ships, with each suite beautifully decorated with touches such as top-quality bed linen. There are seven different grades of suites, from Owners to Veranda suites, and a butler service is offered in the higher classed suites.

The largest ship takes under 600 guests and around 400 crew members, trained by leading hotels.

With inclusions such as shore excursions, wifi, an in-cabin mini bar, and ship-to-shore transportation, these cruises are a far cry from your regular sun-and-sand vacation. And Silversea Cruises have just built their first destination-specific ship, Origin, for expedition cruising in the Galapagos Islands.

This ship now joins the luxurious Silver Moon and Silver Dawn as the three latest ships in the fleet. So save up, plan, and book yourselves on a once-in-a-lifetime adventure on board one of their ultra-luxury cruise ships.

4. Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection

Ritz-Carlton is not just synonymous with luxury-style hotels. The Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection offers cruises on board three suite-only yachts plus customized air and land packages.

With a maximum capacity of only 298 guests on board each yacht, expect luxurious accommodation with your private terrace, personalized service, and remarkable destinations.

Set sail on one of the many beautiful voyages that Ritz-Carlton offer. From ocean voyages to the prominent cruise regions of the Mediterranean, the Caribbean, Canada, and New England, and Northern Europe with the Baltics.

What is exciting is the type of small ports and shore excursions Ritz-Carlton offer. Small vessels mean yachts have access to smaller and more exciting ports and even private islands that larger cruise ships never have the chance to visit. And you can be sure of carefully curated shore excursions with excellent tour guides, all adding to a memorable experience.

Offering 5-star experiences on board small, luxury cruise ships to worldwide destinations, Ponant has 13 vessels, one of which is a yacht. At the same time, others are cruise ships, expedition ships, and even icebreaker ships.

For true cultural immersion into unique and remote places, Ponant partners with Smithsonian Journeys, the travel program of the largest museum in the world. Nature experts, world-class speakers, and guides joining you on these cruises make for a once-in-a-lifetime experience.

While children over three years are allowed to cruise with parents, Ponant cruises are not geared towards families with children. Most guests are adults looking for a super luxurious, elegant cruise.

If you have a big budget, an open mind, and a genuine wish for a culturally rich and exciting adventure, Ponant is hard to beat for your choice of an ultra-luxury cruise line.

6. Paul Gauguin Cruises

In 2019 the French cruise ship company Ponant acquired Paul Gauguin Cruises and had since added Le Paul Gauguin ship to their fleet.

This ultra-luxury cruise ship is specifically designed for the location it sails. Operating out of Papeete, Tahiti, the Paul Gauguin cruise ship focuses on sailing in French Polynesia, South Pacific.

It is, quite simply, a destination that dreams are made of. So why not sail on a cruise ship designed to get you around these islands in celebrity style?

From owner suites to porthole cabin suites, about 70% of rooms have balconies. And the premium class includes butler service. Some of these cabins can accommodate three guests.

If your child under 17 years old is in the same cabin, they can travel free. And enjoy the kids club on board.

With a high crew to passenger ratio of 332 guests and 217 staff, the Paul Gauguin offers an all-inclusive voyage with dining, suite accommodation, a 24-hour room service menu, and activities on board. Extras are for shopping, guided shore excursions, wifi, laundry facilities, or spa treatments.

You will love everything about this cruise ship (especially La Grill on the pool deck for French cuisine). But most of all, you’ll love the varied itineraries and destinations you visit, such as Bora Bora, Tahiti, Fiji, and the Cook Islands. To name just a few of their selected voyages.

7. Hapag-Lloyd Cruises

Owned by TUI based in Hamburg, Hapag-Lloyd Cruises offer five ultra-luxury, small ships in their fleet. There are two cruise ships and three expedition cruise ships.

Exclusive and sophisticated, each ship has a maximum capacity of no more than 500 guests. It’s an elegant atmosphere on board, and smart dress is apparent even during the day. Hapag-Lloyd is not a party ship. Instead, you can expect a calm, more refined experience.

For a classic cruise, choose between one of the two international ships. The more traditional Europa and the more modern Europa 2. We recommend that if you are a family with children, or are young professionals or honeymooners, choose Europa 2. This ship has a more youthful, more modern design and feel.

Children are welcome on both ships. Various clubs for all ages keep young ones busy, especially on sea days. There are children-only times in the pool area and children’s cabins adjoining parents’ cabins. Your baby will get a welcome pack with necessities such as diapers. And if your other kids are 11 and under, they will travel for free.

Being based in Germany means that Hapag-Lloyd Cruises has mainly catered to German-speaking guests in the past. But now, there is a definite focus on attracting more English-speaking guests. The crew speaks German and English, and all your cruise documents will be in English, as is the app.

And if you are an English-speaking guest, you will have an international host on board. Your host will help you will all your needs and inquiries.

Included in your cruise fee is your accommodation, all your dining, including the specialty restaurants, in-cabin mini bar, fresh fruit, gratuities, entertainment, and 1 hour of free wifi. And even all the facilities such as the sauna and steam room. Book early to get the best deal.

Two main things not included in the price are alcoholic beverages and shore excursions. But these can, of course, be booked and paid for before you leave home. You can use the 200 euros onboard credit you receive to book these extras!

THE FACTS – 6 STAR CRUISES

How does it work.

We all know how the hotel star rating system works and given a choice, we would no doubt choose the 5-star hotel experience. There is no such star rating system for cruises, but an unwritten standard has emerged.

6-star cruises are the ultimate type of cruises that you could ever experience when going on holiday on the water. But what is a 6-star cruise, and which cruise lines can offer you a 6-star cruising experience? Here is our comprehensive guide to why 6-star cruises are the ultimate in cruising.

What are 6 Star Cruises?

6-star cruises are also known as Six Star or Ultra-Luxury cruises, and these relate to a small number of exclusive cruise lines with exquisite cruise ships offering the most amazing food and service. Six-star cruise ships take luxury to a whole new level and, in many cases, far exceeds anything you would find in a 5-star hotel ashore.

Most 6-star cruise ships generally cater to just several hundred passengers with a high ratio of crew to passengers – 1:1 in some cases. (read our article on the Crew to Passenger Ratio ). The Passenger Space Ratio , or the amount of space per passenger, will also be much higher on 6-star cruises.

For in-depth reviews of all the Ultra Luxury Six Star cruises, you might like to buy a copy of the Berlitz Guide to Cruising and Cruise Ships which is the ultimate reference guide for serious cruisers.

Berlitz Cruising & Cruise Ships 2020 (Berlitz Cruise Guide)

Cabin or Staterooms are generally referred to as suites, and most have a balcony. The latest Ultra Luxury cruise ships boast “All Balcony All Suites”, and some even have Duplex Appartments and Owners Suites.

The other big differentiator is that Ultra Luxury 6 star cruises are generally all-inclusive, including speciality restaurants, shore excursions, flights, alcoholic beverages and impeccable service from all the crew onboard. It’s essentially as luxurious as you can get but with everything included.

What’s the Difference Between 5 and 6 Star Cruises?

In most industries, a 5 star rating is the best to grade a service or product when you know you’re receiving fantastic products and impeccable services. However, most people don’t know what 6 star cruises are, and it can all become confusing, especially if you’re trying to book your first ever cruise experience.

As you would expect, 6 star cruises are the next step up from 5 star cruises and simply the best kind of cruise you can get. There are notable differences between the cruise experience e onboard a 5 star cruise and a 6 star cruise. The big things that set the two ratings apart include the size of the ship, the space available, and the onboard experience’s general ambience of the onboard experience.

As mentioned, 6 star cruising is where absolutely everything is included in the cruise. With 5 star cruises, many but not all things will be included, such as beverages, shore excursions, speciality restaurants, gratuities and more. You will often find that you need to pay for fine dining, alcoholic beverages, treatments at the spa, flights and other luxuries that you can get on board a cruise ship. At the end of your cruise, be prepared for a large additional bill to settle.

Whichever way you choose to cruise, you’ll fall in love with the exquisite, personalised service you’ll receive, along with amenities onboard that are simply perfection.

What if I Don’t Want Everything Included in my 6 Star Cruise?

With Luxury 6 star cruises, you don’t have many packages to choose from; you pay upfront for almost everything, and you can pay extra for some onshore excursions and treatments at the spas. If you’re not interested in fine dining or alcoholic packages, then 6-star cruises may not be the cruise for you as you can’t cut these packages from the cruise fare.

In this situation, a five-star cruise may be best for you, allowing you to pay for what you want to use – aka “ Pay as You Go Cruising “. And if you change your mind about alcoholic beverages or fine dining, then in some cases, you can buy a drinks package to enjoy these services at your leisure. If you have received an onboard credit (obc) you can always put it towards a drinks package. But watch out, these are sometimes not the bargains they seem!

best ultra luxury cruise lines

C ruising doesn’t have to mean enormous floating cities with thousands of passengers — there are plenty of ultra-luxury lines offering adventures on small ships with a much more intimate atmosphere. 1. Oceania Cruises

You’ll enjoy some of the best food at sea on this line. The latest addition to the fleet, the 1,200-passenger Oceania Vista, launched in 2023. It became the seventh ship in the fleet and the first of two new Allura-class vessels, with the second scheduled for delivery in 2025. Created to reflect the glamorousbelle époque era of Paris, the Grand Dining Room, with a ceiling that’s almost two decks high, is a standout feature on Vista. There’s also a dedicated cabin category for solo travellers. Suggestions from officers and crew members helped shape Oceania Vista, so you can expect a ship that is full of practical and aesthetic touches.

Oceania cruises feature excellent food, such as this scallop dish

2. Silversea

Italian flair is part of Silversea’s appeal, with acres of marble and cool design touches adorning its fleet of elegant ships. In 2023, the line launched Silver Nova, with accommodation for up to 728 guests that includes aft suites with 270-degree views; a sister ship, Silver Ray, is due to sail in summer 2024. Silversea service is highly personal, with a butler for every suite, and there’s a wide choice of fine-dining restaurants. These include SALT (Sea and Land Taste) Kitchen, showcasing regional cuisine from the destinations visited. Fares include all dining (except La Dame, which offers the finest French cuisine), a wide range of spirits and fine wines, crew tips, most gym classes and excursions in every port. Many cruises include flights and transfers too. On expedition cruises, all activities are included.

The Grill on Silver Explorer

There’s new cruising royalty on the horizon with the 3,000-passenger Queen Anne. Setting sail in 2024, the latest flagship is the line’s first new vessel in 12 years and will combine Cunard’s trademark art deco heritage with modern design details. The top suites on Cunard’s current trio of elegant Queens (Mary 2, Victoria and Elizabeth), are graded either Princess Grill or Queens Grill, and represent some of the most prestigious accommodation at sea — particularly the duplex suites that resemble smart private apartments. Each Grill class has its own fine-dining restaurant and Grill passengers have a private cocktail lounge. You’ll enjoy all the features of a big ship too, from top-notch guest speakers to grand theatrical productions and glittering black-tie balls.

Azamara’s four mid-sized luxury ships — most recently joined by Azamara Onward, which shares the same DNA as its fleetmates — offer affordable, destination-focused cruising with plenty of flair. Glamorous White Nights deck parties receive rave reviews, while every cruise includes an AzAmazing evening, a spectacular cultural event ashore. Itineraries focus on late departures, or overnights in port. You’ll be spoiled with its choice of restaurants, including a grill, Prime C, and a romantic Italian, Aqualina. Included are crew tips, most drinks and all dining apart from the two speciality restaurants. Suite guests get extra perks, including speciality dining. And, while most fares include flights and transfers, you’ll pay extra for shore excursions, premium drinks and, unless you’re in one of the top cabins, wi-fi.

5. Seabourn

A fleet of contemporary small ships offering intuitive, all-inclusive service, sumptuous all-suite accommodation and superb dining. Seabourn offers un-stuffy luxury with a vibe that’s more superyacht than luxury cruise ship. The line has some impressive partnerships, not least with the renowned chef Thomas Keller, Sir Tim Rice and the wellness guru Dr Andrew Weil. All dining, including speciality restaurants, crew tips and a comprehensive menu of cocktails and fine wines is included. Some voyages include flights too. You’ll pay extra for premium wines, wi-fi, access to the Retreat (an exclusive alfresco lounge on the top deck) and shore excursions.

6. Uniworld

Specialists in river cruising, Uniworld has cornered the market for extravagant ships that are inspired by their itineraries — and they have vessels all over the world, covering Europe, Asia, Africa and South America. SS La Venezia, for example, decked out in Murano glass and decadent Venetian detailing, sails only northern Italy, including Venice and its islands. On board, everything is included, including a curated selection of excursions. If you want to do your own thing, there are walking sticks and bicycles you can borrow.

7. SeaDream Yacht Club

The service is what sings on this tiny boutique cruise line, which operates just two 112-passenger megayachts that in 2022 underwent bow-to-stern revamps totalling nearly £10 million. All staterooms on SeaDream I and SeaDream II have been completely refurbished, and there are gleaming new teak decks mirroring the centuries-old yachting tradition. Attentive crew cater to guests’ every whim, while the food is exceptional, not least the imaginative vegetarian and vegan dishes. Life onboard is relaxed and informal, with the dress code best described as chic. Every voyage includes a decadent Champagne & Caviar Splash party, either around the pool or in the surf, with free-flowing bubbles. You can swim off the ship too and, for a touch of romance, sleep on deck under a duvet and a canopy of stars. Dining, crew tips and drinks apart from premium wines are included in the price.

Viking’s nine near-identical, adult-only ships carry 930 passengers and embody Scandi chic with their stylish, soothing interiors, gorgeous light-filled lounges and spacious cabins, every one of which has a private veranda. Highlights include an infinity pool on the aft deck, a superb spa with free access to the hydro pool, saunas and steam rooms, and the Wintergarden — a sunlit space with a retractable roof for warm days. Torshavn, an intimate little nightclub, is as fun as any jazz club you’ll find ashore. The package includes all dining, drinks with meals, wi-fi, crew tips, flights and transfers, and an excursion in every port. Bar drinks and optional excursions cost extra.

9. Regent Seven Seas Cruises

Regent’s classy ships have touches reminiscent of grand hotels, with elegant cocktail lounges and imaginatively designed restaurants. The suites on the two newest ships, Seven Seas Explorer and Seven Seas Splendor, are especially covetable, with opulent decor and butler service. Regent is arguably the world’s most luxurious — and most inclusive — of the luxury lines. All dining, most wines and spirits, crew tips, gym classes, wi-fi, excursions, flights and transfers, and even pre and post-cruise hotel stays are included. Spa treatments, premium drinks and some of the optional excursions are all you’ll pay extra for.

Megayacht Scenic Eclipse marked the first foray into the luxury ocean cruise scene for Australian-owned Scenic; the 228-guest sister vessel Scenic Eclipse II followed suit in spring of 2023. Every spacious suite has a balcony and you can expect upmarket interiors reminiscent of a contemporary boutique hotel. Standards don’t slip when it comes to gastronomy, where you can take your pick from Asian fusion, classic French and everything in between. Both ships are designed for polar expedition cruising, but also offer warm-water voyages. Whatever the climate, there’s plenty to keep guests entertained, be it e-bikes or stand-up paddleboarding, a helicopter flight or a dive in the submarine, which both cost extra. Practically everything is included: most drinks, all dining, crew tips, a stocked minibar, flights and transfers, excursions and activities.

Submarine dives are available to travellers with Scenic

11. Explora Journeys

Explora Journeys is the first luxury oceangoing brand from international shipping giant the MSC Group. Explora I, the first of six ships, debuted in 2023, and the rest will follow between 2024 and 2028. The sea-facing cabins — described as homes at sea — have balconies, walk-in wardrobes and heated bathroom floors. Entry level accommodation is larger than average and goes up to a huge Owner’s Residence, complete with a private terrace, hot tub and butler. Restaurants will feature cuisine from around the globe.

Explora 1

12. Swan Hellenic

One for culture hounds, British line Swan Hellenic has itineraries to many adventurous destinations on the cruise circuit, from the polar regions to countries in east Africa and the Indian Ocean. You get to really experience it all, too, as a shore excursion is included for every stop. Its small fleet of three ships has been designed with expeditions in mind, but none of them scrimps on comfort — expect saunas with spectacular views, lounges with cosy fireplaces and cabins furnished with boutique hotel aesthetics.

swanhellenic.com

French-owned Ponant operates a fleet of stylish expedition ships, the smartest of which are arguably the six Ponant Explorers, with clever design features — most notably a multisensory underwater viewing lounge. Every cabin has a balcony and luxurious, tactile finishes in leather and suede. On board you’ll find luxury French brands such as Veuve Clicquot champagne and Hermès bath products, as well as classic French cuisine overseen by the chef Alain Ducasse. The latest addition to the fleet is the icebreaker Le Commandant Charcot, tailor-made for thrilling polar expeditions. Costs cover dining, most drinks, a stocked minibar, wi-fi, crew gratuities and — on expedition cruises — most activities. You’ll pay extra for excursions and, on some voyages, flights.

If you're planning a trip to the Bahamas, one of the first things you'll need to sort out is your travel documentation. As a U.S. citizen, you generally need to have a valid passport book or passport card to enter the Bahamas by air or sea. While it's close to the United States, it's not part of the U.S. or a U.S. territory. As such, you'll need to meet the same entry requirements as you would for any other foreign country.

What you should know before traveling to the Bahamas There are some details to keep in mind when it comes to the required travel documents for entering the Bahamas. Can you use your driver's license to go to the Bahamas? No, a driver's license alone is not sufficient for entry into the Bahamas. Even though the Bahamas is a relatively short distance from the U.S., you'll still need to present a valid U.S. passport book or passport card when arriving by air or sea.

Jamaica offers an eclectic experience for the modern traveler. As the recognized birthplace of reggae, the island country lets you hang loose and feel the beat. Natural wonders like the Luminous Lagoon dazzle the senses. Unique, flavorful cuisines like rich stews and fresh seafood entice and satisfy. But first, you have to get there.

Typically, traveling to another country requires a passport. But if you're new to the island nation, you might wonder — do you need a passport to go to Jamaica? Here’s what you need to travel there and back so you can experience an island nation like nothing else.

Ultra-Luxury Lines

If you've got taste, tend to avoid the mass market, and have lots and lots of money, then these are the cruise lines for you. Most people attracted to these types of cruises are wealthy, relatively or actually sophisticated, and social. They're well traveled if not necessarily adventurous, tend to stick to five-star experiences, and don't blink at paying top dollar to be pampered -- which is exactly what they get here.

On these ships, elbowroom is abundant and service is very personal, with staff getting to know your likes and dislikes early on. The onboard atmosphere is much like a private club, with guests trading tales over drinks or over delicious French, Italian, Mediterranean, and Asian meals that often rival what's served in respected shore-side restaurants. It might not quite be up to the three-star Michelin level, but it's absolutely the best you'll find at sea, served in high style by gracious waiters who know their jobs. A full dinner can, of course, be served in your cabin, course-by-course if you like.

Entertainment and organized activities are both more dignified than on other ships and more limited. Guests tend to amuse themselves, enjoying cocktails and conversation in a piano bar, listening to singers or musicians, and attending lectures just for the fun of it. Itineraries tend to shun the big megaship ports in favor of yachting destinations like St. Barts, Bequia, and Jost Van Dyke.

As a rule, ships in the luxury market are smaller than those in the mainstream, which lets them visit smaller ports and aids the staff in providing truly personalized service. The smallest vessels (the two SeaDream yachts, plus Seabourn's Pride, Legend, and Spirit ) carry only 100 to 200 passengers, while the largest would barely be midsize by mainstream standards, carrying only 700 to 1,000 passengers apiece. Several new ships have spiced up the luxury market in the past couple of years, with Silversea adding two (one an expedition vessel and the other a 540-passenger palace) and Seabourn adding three sisters carrying 450 passengers apiece. All the luxe lines in this group have also spent millions refurbishing their older ships, making sure they can compete with the demand for "new new new" in today's marketplace.

While the high-end lines have not been immune to the economic marketplace and have adjusted their individual pricing policies and programs to meet the times, they'll still cost lots more than your typical mainstream cruise. Expect to pay at least $2,000 per person for a week in the Caribbean, and easily twice that or more if you opt for a large suite or cruise during the busiest times of the year. Balancing the high fares is the fact that all the lines in this group include a lot of extras in their rates. For instance, all except Crystal provide free unlimited wine, liquor, and beverages, along with gratuities and a stocked minibar. Regent goes a step further and includes most shore excursions in its rates, too. Many of these lines include other nice little perks, from luscious chocolates on your pillow on formal nights (Silversea) to cotton logo PJ's (SeaDream) and high-end bathroom amenities from names such as Bulgari, Bronnley, Molton Brown, and Ferragamo.

These ships are not geared to children, although aboard Crystal, the kid-friendliest of the lot, you might see 100 or more during holidays or school vacation months. Babysitting can often be arranged privately with an off-duty crewmember.

Dress Codes -- Though these are still the lines on which you'll see the most tuxedos and long gowns at sea, all of the luxe operators have in recent years relaxed their dress codes, going along with the overall travel industry trend toward a more casual environment. Regent is a perfect example: In 2009, the line went to an "elegant casual" policy, with the only formal nights being on longer cruises. It's entirely possible now for a couple to travel on any of the luxe ships with nothing spiffier than a dark suit and elegant cocktail dress.

World's Best Luxury Cruise Lines, Ranked

Azamara Club Cruises

Cruising is already one of the best ways to travel — all of your luggage stays in one place while you sail from destination to destination, you’re guaranteed at least three top-notch meals each day and there’s always something to do onboard, whether it’s a live show, a massage at the spa or hanging out by the pool.

But taking a luxury cruise? Now that’s really something special. Luxury cruise lines pull out all the stops, offering intimate ships with just a few hundred people on board, itineraries to jaw-dropping destinations and impeccable, personalized service. Of course, you’ll pay top dollar for all of these perks, but on the best lines, the splurge is worth it.

So, which cruise line is the most above-and-beyond extraordinary? U.S. News & World Report compared luxury cruise lines based on a combination of approval from experts and travelers as well as health ratings (a must after the past few years).

Which ones made the cut? These are the seven best luxury cruise lines in the world.

7. Oceania Cruises

Oceania

Year founded:  2002

Headquarters:  Miami, Florida

Number of destinations:  330

*This data comes from the U.S. News & World Report's 2022 ranking .

Bottom Line: Oceania Cruises

Oceania Cruises pool deck

You’ll find a mix of retirees, young couples and solo travelers on Oceania Cruises .

Four of Oceania’s ships can accommodate 684 guests, while two larger ships set sail with 1,250 passengers aboard. Despite being considered a mid-sized cruise line, Oceania maintains a 2-to-1 passenger-to-crew ratio, which makes it feel more intimate and personalized.

Oceania offers unique amenities onboard its ships, including art classes, a library and a card room complete with board games and bridge.

This is also the cruise line to book if you want to break your diet. U.S. News notes that Oceania "caters to foodies," with gourmet dining, cooking demonstrations, wine and martini tastings, and more. Some ships also have a cooking school where you can learn to make delicious dishes.

What Travelers Say About Oceania Cruises

Customer on Oceania Cruises

"We ate meals at seven restaurants & they were all delicious. Constantly changing menus provided a wide array of choices each day. Menus are available on your cabin TV so you always know what is available. Grilled Lobster, Lamb Chops, and Steaks were available every night in the Terrace restaurant Grill in addition to the ever changing evening selections. Service was very good throughout the ship and some of the staff are truly exceptional. Everyone was very friendly & always willing to help." — BobC1950

Best Oceania Cruises Trip

Sagrada Familia in Barcelona

Oceania also offers aptly named “grand voyages,” which are essentially itineraries that combine multiple regional cruises together into one incredible, super trip. Among the most memorable of these uber-journeys is a jaunt from Rome, Italy, to Miami, Florida, over the course of 24 days, starting at $3,399 per guest.

You won’t just be traipsing across the Atlantic on this action-packed trip — you’ll get to visit ports in Italy, Spain, France, Monaco, Antigua and Puerto Rico.

You'll also have two non-consecutive days in Barcelona, Spain. You can choose from myriad excursions, including seeing the city highlights and a chocolate and cava foodie experience. If you are already familiar with this beautiful city, we suggest taking a tour to the Monastery of Montserrat, a Benedictine monastery perched on the side of a mountain.

6. Silversea Cruises

Silversea Cruises

Year founded:  1994

Headquarters:   Fontvieille, Monaco

Number of destinations:  900

Bottom Line: Silversea Cruises

Silversea interior

The 10 small ships that set sail for Silversea Cruises are luxurious and intimate, with 51 to 304 suites.

Silversea’s all-inclusive cruises appeal to travelers over the age of 50 as well as groups, couples and solo travelers who are looking for small ships and luxurious accommodations. All of the cabins are posh suites, and they boast ocean views and butler service. The all-inclusive aspect makes the steep price tag worth it, with no limit on premium wines and spirits, in-suite dining or entertainment.

One perk of sailing with Silversea is its flexible dining schedule, which means you can eat whenever you feel like it with anyone you want. Cruises also feature onboard lecture series and expert guides, so you won’t have a chance to get bored while sailing — ever.

U.S. News & World Report singled out the line's focus on "exclusivity and personalization" as well as its "exotic itineraries and gourmet restaurants."

What Travelers Say About Silversea Cruises

Silversea passenger

"We simply cannot imagine that any other operator delivers better tours in as much comfort...We can strongly recommend this cruise. I cannot claim to have sampled a variety of Galapagos tours. But based on discussions with guides (who had worked on other tour boats) I feel confident Silversea offers the best planned and most luxurious tours." — Twinklles

Best Silversea Cruises Trip

Hubbard Glacier

For a truly once-in-a-lifetime experience, consider a compelling 18-day itinerary focused on the frozen north with fares starting at $17,550. After departing from Nome, Alaska, you’ll visit several Russian destinations, including Provideniya, Lorino Village and Cape Kuyveveem.

You’ll also get to explore dozens of ports in Alaska. The cruise will take you to places like St.Paul Island, Elfin Cove and Sitka. Cruise past Hubbard Glacier, the largest glacier in North America, and sail along Point Adolphus, where you might get the chance to see humpback whales or orcas. Finally, you'll disembark in Vancouver, Canada.

5. Crystal Cruises

Crystal Cruises

Year founded:  1988

Headquarters:  Los Angeles, California

Number of destinations:  1,000

Bottom Line: Crystal Cruises

Crystal Cruises room

You’ll find extremely personalized attention and elegantly designed vessels when you opt to sail with Crystal Cruises . The cruise line has eight ships, and most of them only include 461 or 535 cabins, meaning you won’t be battling crowds at any point during your journey. You can choose between deluxe staterooms (with or without verandas) and penthouse cabins on the Crystal Serenity and Crystal Symphony.

Crystal cruises range from six to 140 days and venture to destinations all over Europe, Africa, North America, Asia, Australia and even Antarctica. Since the cruise line keeps its passenger-to-crew ratio very low (nearly 1-to-1), you’ll likely never have to wait for service when you’re sailing.

U.S. News also highlights the line's "engaging enrichment programs," which range from the heady (workshops led by thought leaders) to the fun (dance lessons).

What Travelers Say About Crystal Cruises

Passenger Crystal Cruises

"The big difference from a mainstream cruise is that things seem to happen easily. For example when we sat down to breakfast someone was over in a minute to see if we wanted coffee and juice rather than having to go look for it. The quality of the food was outstanding, and interesting. The unlimited internet worked smoothly, and quick. Having everything included meant you were not constantly bombarded with people asking you to buy something, and there was not a blizzard of flyers delivered to the cabin with sales, and offers. At dinner every night we were offered a selection of special wines. The crew made us feel very welcome, and pampered." — JCMass.

Best Crystal Cruises Trip

Moai at Easter Island Chile

Crystal Cruises offers some of the most extraordinary itineraries in the world, including a 140-day trip that will take you from Miami to Barcelona for $69,489.

But don't think that this will be a straightforward transatlantic trip. Rather, you'll spend almost half a year sailing to the Caribbean, down Central and South America to then head to the Pacific Islands. You'll visit Australia and other countries in Oceania before going up to Southeast Asia, exploring the Indian Ocean and the East Coast of Africa. The trip then goes into the Middle East and the Mediterranean, stopping in several European countries before ending in Barcelona. Highlights include visiting the paradisal beaches of Tahiti, going on an African safari and stopping on Chile's Easter Island.

For a less ambitious, but no less extraordinary trip, you can spend 19 days sailing from Argentinean Patagonia to Cape Town .

4. Azamara Club Cruises

Azamara Club Cruises

Year founded:  2007

Number of destinations:  260

Bottom Line: Azamara Club Cruises

Azamara cruise at night

With incredible trips that visit more than 80 countries, Azamara Club Cruises earns high marks from luxury cruisers. The 45-and-up crowd in particular loves Azamara, with longer cruises typically booked by retirees who have spent years saving for relaxing vacations after the 9-to-5 grind.

In addition to snagging the No. 4 spot for luxury cruises, Azamara earned the third spot for best cruise line for couples and for best cruise line in the Mediterranean.

Azamara’s staff-to-passenger ratio is low — there’s roughly one staff member for every two passengers — so you’ll get personalized service when you set sail with this line. Cruises start at three nights and go all the way up to 26 nights on four ships.

This is a cruise line that also understands that size matters. U.S. New notes that boats are small enough to "reach off-the-beaten-path destinations, allowing the cruise line to offer unique shore excursions." No ship has more than 700 passengers.

On board, you'll have the opportunity to participate in activities like wine tastings, lectures and cooking demonstrations.

What Travelers Say About Azamara Club Cruises

Azamara entertainment

"This was our first Azamara cruise and we were so impressed with everything, we decided that we will be an Azamara Customer for life. The service was fabulous and with a smile. The food in the dining room was fabulous and the menu had many choices.

The pool area had some shade with lounge chairs to get out of the sun. The gym was great with a view, plenty of equipment and an area for yoga and Pilates classes, spin cycle classes. They offered watercolor painting , jewelry making and needlepoint classes at no charge." — Pboothe

Best Azamara Club Cruises Trip

Cape Town, South Africa

One of Azamara's most distinctive trips is a 21-night West Africa voyage that starts at $5,159 and visits ports Cape Town, Takoradi in Ghana, Banjul in the Gambia, Grand Canaria in Spain and Lisbon, Portugal. Along the journey, you’ll taste local food, explore UNESCO World Heritage sites and visit open-air markets.

If you’re an adventure junkie, you’ll want to book a kayaking excursion in Namibia's Pelican Point. Travelers who want an immersive experience can do a drumming and dancing workshop in Ivory Coast.

3. Regent Seven Seas Cruises

Regent Seven Seas

Year founded:  1992

Number of destinations:  450

Bottom Line: Regent Seven Seas Cruises

Regent lounge

Come aboard one of the five ships under the Regent Seven Seas cruise-line banner and you won’t be disappointed. It’s the No. 3 pick for luxury cruises thanks to its quality service, low staff-to-passenger ratio (there's rarely more than two guests per staff member) and deluxe accommodations (all the cabins are suites).

Plus, you can really immerse yourself in the cities you visit and try many exciting new things. All shore excursions are complimentary, and you can participate in as many as you have time for at every port.

Regent Seven Seas prides itself on offering all-inclusive cruises all over the world, which means your fare covers everything from airfare and hotels before and after the cruise to alcoholic beverages, specialty restaurants, Wi-Fi and gratuities once onboard the ship.

What Travelers Say About Regent Seven Seas Cruises

Regent passenger

"The accommodations are very nice (especially after getting bumped up two levels), the food is very good, and the crew is exemplary! ...The numerous free excursions were top-notch and the shipboard entertainment was amazing. The cruise director even sang and has a voice bar none. The free wine and liquor was also top notch and flowing...I highly recommend this ship and crew to anyone wanting a great voyage. It was worth every penny." — Erndog72

Best Regent Seven Seas Cruises Trip

2. Seabourn Cruise Line

Seabourn Cruise Line

Year founded:  1986

Headquarters:  Seattle, Washington

Number of destinations:  464

Bottom Line: Seabourn Cruise Line

Seabourn lounge

Coming in at No. 2, Seabourn is a lavish cruise line based in Seattle with a fleet of six super-intimate ships.

Each Seabourn vessel can accommodate just 458 to 600 guests, so you definitely won’t feel like just another face in the crowd on one of their journeys. All the rooms are suites, and they all feature ocean views, so you’re sure to be cruising in comfort. Though if you want an upgrade, you can opt for a luxury suite. Come mealtime, you can expect impeccable menus, including several created by Michelin-starred chef Thomas Keller .

Given all that, it should come as no surprise that Seabourn also landed high on the list in other categories — it also came in second place for best cruise lines in the Mediterranean and best cruise lines for couples, and in third for best cruises line in the Caribbean.

What Travelers Say About Seabourn Cruise Line

Seabourn expeditions

"The staff is tremendous. Some of the most attentive I have encountered. The food and ship wines were okay, not great. We do not cruise to eat so we didn't mind. The grill by Thomas Keller is outstanding, one of the top ten meals of my life...the wines off of their premium menu are fantastic. The stops were great. The tours(we only do half day) were well organized, interesting and fun." — kandylandmo

Best Seabourn Cruise Line Trip

Sydney

Seabourn has a 30-day trip of the southern seas starting at $14,499. Over the course of a month, you’ll travel aboard the cozy 229-suite Seabourn Odyssey and visit various ports in New Zealand, Australia, East Timor and Indonesia. See komodo dragons on Komodo Island, jumping crocodiles in the Northern Territory of Australia and exotic wildlife in the Great Barrier Reef.

The prospect of visiting East Timor is particularly exciting. Having gained independence in 2002, it is one of the least visited countries in the world . As you enjoy land excursions around Dili, you can feel lucky to be one of the 75,000 yearly visitors the country gets.

1. Viking Ocean Cruises

Viking Ocean Cruises

Year founded:  1997

Number of destinations:  200

Bottom Line: Viking Ocean Cruises

Viking cruise ship interior

Viking got its start with river cruises but began offering luxury ocean journeys in 2015. Since then, it's proven that its ocean trips are just as posh as its river jaunts. The cruise line was not only named as the best luxury cruise line, but it’s also been named the No. 1 line for couples, thanks to amenities like fireplaces, infinity pools and deluxe spa services, and for Mediterranean cruises.

Viking has nine, 930-passenger ocean vessels, each offering verandas for all cabins and seven dining venues. There are no children’s activities on Viking ocean trips — in fact, all passengers must be at least 18 — so you’ll find a calm, relaxing environment perfect for active adults and retirees.

Viking’s typical ocean cruise options range from eight to 93 days, though you can spend up to 138 days aboard a world cruise .

What Travelers Say About Viking Ocean Cruises

Yoga on Viking cruise

"Food was first rate, pools were open and clean, entertainment was good. The speakers were very knowledgeable and entertaining at the same time...Embarkation was a dream - I never touched a bag and I was in my Cabin 90 minutes after my plane touched down in Barcelona." — Katootsie

Best Viking Ocean Cruises Trip

Aurora borealis in Scandinavia

For a totally unique experience, consider Viking's northern lights cruise . This 13-day journey, which starts at $4,999, departs from London, England, and visits numerous ports in Norway, all the way up to the Arctic Circle.

While the term “luxury” is often thrown around and overused, the top-end luxury cruise lines really do deliver a five-star experience that’s akin to staying at a grand hotel—with the added bonus of all-inclusive pricing and a ship that brings you to multiple destinations during your stay.

When you book an ultra-luxury cruise, you can expect a carefully curated travel experience. Having sailed on dozens of luxury cruises the world over, I can attest that on these best-of-class vessels, you’ll enjoy high-quality design details, fine artwork, and all-you-can-consume champagne and caviar between visits to tony and lesser-known destinations. In addition, luxury cruise lines also focus on providing immersive and enriching programming that offers a more meaningful and richer understanding of the places and cultures you are visiting through expert-led lectures and guided tours. And the crew to passenger ratio is often as high as one crew member to every two guests, ensuring an elevated level of service.

For years the ultra-luxury end of cruising was limited to a small selection of top brands: Seabourn , Silversea , Regent Seven Seas Cruises , and Crystal , to name a few. But that’s changing. New brands are emerging such as Scenic and the newly launched Explora Journeys , each with their own nuances and expertise. (Scenic is making a name for itself in the expedition cruising space, for instance, while Explora promises a beautiful boutique cruising experience on a 900-plus passenger ship.) Luxury hotel companies are also getting in the game, with such well-recognized names as Ritz-Carlton, Four Seasons, Orient Express, and Aman all recently unveiling plans to offer a luxury cruise product to guests.

Natalya Leahy, who was named president of Seabourn in March, says the luxury cruise market is growing due to several factors, not the least of which is that there are more than 22 million people in the U.S. with a net worth of a million dollars or more. Well-heeled boomers are booking luxury cruises, but so are Gen Xers and even younger travelers.

AFAR spoke with Leahy in Genoa, Italy, in late July, as the brand prepared to launch the 264-passenger Seabourn Pursuit , the second ultraluxury expedition ship the company has introduced in 12 months—and a ship that will explore destinations that include Antarctica and the South Pacific in its first year.

“What’s luxury really?” says Leahy. “Luxury is a choice. Luxury is about unique, small details.”

We asked Leahy’s advice on what travelers should know before going on a luxury cruise—and added a few of our own tips as well.

How to pick the luxury cruise line that’s best for you

Leahy suggests starting out by asking your luxury cruising friends and acquaintances what lines they like. Word of mouth is frequently a factor in the luxury-end of cruising. “Our guests are our biggest ambassadors and bring many new guests onboard,” she says.

Once you get some ideas, or even if you don’t, consult with an expert. “In general, for luxury travel, it’s helpful to have either a travel advisor or, if you book directly with us, a personal cruise consultant,” she says. “It’s very helpful to have someone who is there to advise you.”

A luxury cruise should be a carefree vacation experience, given all the inclusions, Leahy says. She notes that “when you want to see the world and compare land travel to cruise travel, cruise is much easier to organize.”

But there are nuances—between cruise lines, types of accommodations, and even what is (and isn’t) included in the “all-inclusive” pricing (for instance, certain more exclusive excursions might be extra). This is where working with an expert comes in handy.

Leahy says she seeks advice even when she cruises, which is often with multiple family members or friends. “If I even attempt to organize it on land, I think we all would become ‘best enemies,’” she laughs. “I really believe travel advisors play an incredibly strategic role for us,” Leahy adds. “They know our brands.”

Two-thirds of Seabourn’s business comes through travel advisors, and on any given cruise, about half the guests have cruised with the line before and half are new to the brand—and often new to cruising—Leahy says.

The best luxury cruise lines

Luxury ships vary in size and destinations they visit as well as other factors such as what’s included in the cruise fare. For instance, is your transportation included? Wi-Fi? Are there any upcharges for specialty dining? Will you pay extra for excursions? Will you have a butler? Every brand has its bragging points.

The resurrected Crystal Cruises , now owned and managed by high-end tour operating company Abercrombie & Kent and known simply as Crystal , consists of two ships, the 740-passenger Crystal Serenity and 606-passenger Crystal Symphony , both with complimentary Nobu restaurants aboard.

Explora Journeys

Explora Journeys , a new luxury line from shipping company MSC Group , recently launched its first, 922-passenger ship, Explora I , with an extensive spa, four pools, and lush interior design details.

Regent Seven Seas

Regent Seven Seas Cruises differentiates itself by including a lot in its fares—such as business-class airfare and unlimited shore excursions—on ships ranging from 490 to 750 passengers. The line will launch a new ship, the 750-passenger Seven Seas Grandeur , the latest of what Regent calls its “world’s most luxurious” ships, in November.

Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection

The famous hotel brand launched its first cushy yacht last year . Aboard the 298-passenger Evrima , attractions include hotel-like suites and bartenders who are whizzes at creating personalized concoctions. The 456-passenger Ilma follows in September 2024.

The Seabourn fleet, with ships ranging from 458 to 600 guests, features complimentary steakhouses with menus by renowned chef Thomas Keller (of French Laundry fame). The brand’s two expedition ships are outfitted with 24 Zodiacs and kayaks for exploration led by a 24-person expedition team, plus a six-passenger submarine for undersea views.

Australian expedition line Scenic has as many as 10 dining experiences onboard its intimate vessels and toys that include an eight-passenger submarine and state-of-the-art Airbus helicopters aboard its two 228-passenger expedition yachts.

Silversea ships range from 254 to 728 passengers, plus two smaller expedition ships, the 132-passenger Silver Explorer and 100-passenger Silver Origin . The line’s S.A.L.T. program focuses on local dining and drinking experiences, and all guests get butler service—– on ships that include the recently launched 728-passenger Silver Nova .

Make sure to choose the ship that’s right for you

Many people start off their vacation planning with the destination, but Leahy makes a case for the strong role the ship should play in your decision-making.

“The unique thing about cruising is your experience continues 24/7,” she says. “It doesn’t end with visiting the destinations. You step onboard and have this experience with fine dining and interaction with our cruise members and entertainment and shows and live music that continues the experience.”

Social media posts and cruise line websites provide clues to help you understand the environment on board specific brands, Leahy says, adding that you should check reviews and look for photos.

She says it’s not uncommon for guests to describe Seabourn ships as their “home away from home.”

Because you will be spending a considerable amount of time on the ship, just as you would when comparing land-based resorts you’ll also want to get idea of what’s offered onboard in terms of bars, restaurants, lounges, gym and spa facilities, and entertainment. Also consider the amount of outdoor space, such as outdoor dining options, pools, bars, and other spots to catch sea views.

Another thing to think about is service and those personal encounters that lead to lasting memories. “Our guests are very sophisticated people, very accomplished individuals, and what they are looking for from travel is not just getting from destination A to destination B,” Leahy says. “They really are looking to experience the world in a very authentic way. What they are looking for in ultra-luxury is relaxed elegance and authentic lasting connections, both with each other and our crew.”

How to decide on the right suite and whether to upgrade

Luxury ships in general are usually entirely or mostly made up of suite accommodations with features such as large bathrooms and walk-in closets. You’ll have ocean views and will likely have a balcony on these high-end vessels.

If you’re looking for more space, you might consider upgrading to a suite with a living room and a larger deck. Some luxury suites are apartment-size and come with amenities such as private outdoor hot tubs.

Cruise line websites generally do a good job in terms of providing descriptions, layouts, square footage, and photos of the various options, but a specialized travel advisor or consultant can help you assess your space needs.

Start with a shorter cruise

While you can book luxury cruise itineraries for weeks or months, Leahy suggests before you go all out with a longer sailing you consider a test cruise to see if you will like the experience.

“I think it’s important to start cruising by trying for seven days whether the Caribbean, Alaska, or the Mediterranean,” she says. “They are bucket list destinations and yet they don’t commit you to being the first time on a ship for too long. It’s a great way to start cruising and experiencing.”

Don’t forget about the land-based experiences

Once you decide on a destination and what cruise line you want to try, and you book your suite, it’s important to start thinking about what land-based experiences you’d like to have at the various ports of call.

An advantage of cruising is that your cruise line will provide a selection of carefully curated choices for exploring the ports, for those who prefer not to do independent exploration.

And think about whether you want to extend your stay whether in your embarkation city or your final destination and whether the cruise line might be able to help with that. It’s not uncommon for cruise lines to offer pre- and post-cruising packages.

A goal of Leahy’s is to create “deeper and richer” land experiences, and the line is making investments in this regard, including with dedicated crew. “If you are going to Japan , for instance, you are not just doing the cruise, most likely,” she says. “We want to expand that Seabourn experience and give our guests a choice of hotels to stay, prepackaged, personalized, with more bespoke experiences.”

And once you have put those final pieces into place, are booked and ready to go, we’ve also put together a guide on whether or not you should consider cruise insurance , our essential cruise packing list , and the ultimate guide to tipping on cruises —so that you can check off everything you might need (and need to know) before you sail away.

Exploring Cruise Line Categories: From Mass-Market to Ultra-Luxury

Choosing the right cruise line isn't easy.

Embarking on a cruise is a thrilling adventure, but with a sea of options, choosing the right cruise line can be as complex as navigating the ocean's tides. To help you steer in the right direction, this guide examines four main cruise line categories – mass-market, premium, entry-luxury, and ultra-luxury. As you journey from mass-market to ultra-luxury, you'll notice a graduated increase in prices reflecting the enhanced amenities, personalized service, and indulgent experiences offered. By understanding these categories, you can better chart a course for the cruise experience that best suits your expectations and budget. Welcome aboard as we set sail into the world of cruising!

Royal Caribbean Thrill Island o the Icon of the Seas

Thrill Island on the Royal Caribbean Icon of the Sea

Mass-Market Cruise Lines

Carnival • msc • norwegian • royal caribbean.

Mass-market cruise lines are also known as "mainstream" cruise lines. These are the most popular and widely recognized names in cruising, such as Carnival, Norwegian, Royal Caribbean, and MSC. They are designed to appeal to a broad demographic and offer a wide variety of onboard activities and amenities.

The ships in this category are often quite large, capable of carrying thousands of passengers. They offer a wide range of accommodation options, from budget-friendly interior cabins to more luxurious suites. These cruise lines feature a variety of dining options, from buffet-style meals to specialty restaurants, as well as numerous bars and lounges.

Entertainment is a key feature of mass-market cruises, with options like Broadway-style shows, live music, comedy acts, and activities like rock climbing walls, water slides, and mini golf. It's all about giving a broad range of passengers lots to do.

Celebrity Edge Martini Bar

Martini Bar

Premium Cruise Lines

Celebrity • cunard • disney • holland america • princess • virgin voyages.

Premium cruise lines, such as Holland America, Cunard, Disney, Princess, Celebrity, and Virgin Voyages, offer a step up in terms of accommodations, food, and service compared to mass-market cruise lines. They are designed for passengers looking for a more refined and sophisticated cruising experience, but still at an accessible price point.

The ships tend to be slightly smaller than those of mass market lines, and the focus is on a more upscale, intimate experience. Accommodations are more spacious and well-appointed, and dining options often include upscale fare and more inclusive offerings. The onboard entertainment is also typically more sophisticated, featuring guest lecturers, cooking demonstrations, and live music.

Premium lines often feature itineraries that are slightly more exotic or unique than those offered by mass-market lines, appealing to more experienced travelers looking for something different.

Viking Ocean Explorers Lounge

Viking Ocean's Explorer Lounge

Entry-Luxury Cruise Lines

Azamara • cunard  • oceania • viking ocean • windstar.

Entry-luxury cruise lines, like Azamara, Oceania, and Viking Ocean, provide an even higher level of cuisine, service, amenities, and personal attention. They are designed for discerning travelers who value a more luxurious and inclusive cruising experience, but who may not be ready to commit to the price point of the ultra-luxury lines.

These cruise lines typically operate smaller ships, allowing for a more intimate and relaxed atmosphere. The passenger-to-crew ratio is generally lower, meaning more attentive service. Dining is a highlight, often featuring gourmet, destination-focused cuisine, and all-inclusive fare.

Entry-luxury cruise lines also offer more in-depth itineraries, with longer stays in ports and more overnight visits, allowing passengers to explore destinations more fully.

Ritz Carlton

Ritz-Carelton Yacht Collection

Ultra-Luxury Cruise Lines

Crystal • explora journey • regent seven seas • ritz-carlton yacht • seabourn • silverseas.

Ultra-luxury cruise lines, like Regent Seven Seas, Seabourn, Silversea, Crystal Cruise Lines,  Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection, and Explora Journey represent the pinnacle of luxury cruising. These lines are designed for the most discerning passengers who expect the highest level of luxury and service.

The ships in this category are typically small to mid-size, allowing for an extremely high level of personal service. Accommodations are often suite-only, with high-end amenities and personal butler service. Dining is of the highest caliber, often designed by celebrity chefs, and includes complimentary fine wines and spirits.

Ultra-luxury cruises often include a range of all-inclusive amenities, such as shore excursions, gratuities, and even airfare in the cruise fare. Itineraries are often unique and exotic, with a focus on immersive, destination-focused experiences.

As you move up from mass-market to ultra-luxury, you can expect an increase in price and the level of luxury and inclusivity, and a corresponding increase in price. The choice between these types of cruises ultimately depends on your personal preferences, budget, and what you hope to get out of your cruise experience.

WHY YOU SHOULD SPLURGE ON A LUXURY OR EXPEDITION CRUISE

March 19, 2024 | 8 min read.

Renee Sklarew

The extraordinary experiences offered on today’s luxury cruises boggle the imagination, from complimentary business class airfare to submarine rides in Antarctica. Add exclusive itineraries, lavish amenities and exceptional cuisine, and it’s no wonder enthusiasm for luxury cruising continues to grow. Here's the lowdown on nine exceptional cruise lines recommended by AAA.

a Regent Seven Seas’ Superior Suite

ULTRA-LUXURY On ultra-luxury cruises, guests spend big for exclusivity and personal attention. The spacious cabins are outfitted with high-quality linens, soaking tubs and roomy closets. Daily excursions, all drinks and multiple meals served at specialty restaurants are included in the cruise fee. Typically, ultra-luxury cruise ships carry 300 to 700 passengers, who will never encounter lines and will always have access to exceptional ports of call.

steak and wine

REGENT SEVEN SEAS CRUISES Regent Seven Seas bills itself as the best value in ultra-luxury cruising, thanks to the wide array of inclusions in the booking price, such as shore excursions, transfers, valet service and business-class airfare. The fleet’s calling card is having some of the industry’s most spacious all-suite guest rooms, equipped with cashmere blankets, walk-in closets, soaking tubs and dual sinks. Four specialty dining venues—Asian fusion, Italian, French and a steakhouse—are complimentary, and Regent’s bartenders keep the premium alcohol flowing.

Guests can indulge in the spa’s hydrothermal suites or learn new cooking techniques in the Culinary Arts Kitchen. There are five bars and lounges, dance classes, and a nightly cabaret show featuring a five-piece orchestra in the Constellation Theater. Regent strives to create a relaxed onboard experience and offers Serene Spa & Wellness Tours that carry the feeling into port, too.

a submarine launching from a Seabourn ship

SEABOURN Care for a polar plunge, or how about venturing under the sea in a custom-built submarine while sipping champagne? Perhaps you prefer a relaxing day of watersports (kayaking, paddleboarding, waterskiing and the like), or maybe you’d enjoy lounging in a private cabana? Each Seabourn ship is equipped to enhance a destination by providing tailored amenities and experiences.

Seabourn ships may be small, but the entertainment is big. An “Evening with Sir Tim Rice” is a Seabourn exclusive featuring the composer via video narration and his tunes from The Lion King and Aladdin. Seabourn’s Spa Wellness program by Dr. Andrew Weill integrates innovative practices, such as sound therapy in an Amethyst Crystal Sound Bath. Guests may make special requests through their Personal Suite Host, who can even draw a bubble bath for you. There’s nearly a one-to-one ratio of guests to staff on these small ships.

man and woman in cooking class with chef

SILVERSEA There are plenty of “cheers” on board Silversea. That’s because the wines, cocktails, caviar and specialty dining are all-inclusive. The staterooms are expansive, with opulent appointments; each one is assigned 24-hour butler service, which includes unpacking your suitcase at your request and serving in-suite multicourse dinners. The new Silver Nova carries just 728 passengers, but it boasts nine dining venues and an impressive choice of bars.

Silversea guests receive one free excursion per day, with offerings such as the S.A.L.T. (Sea And Land Taste) program, which focuses on visiting organic farms, vineyards and local markets or taking a cooking class with a Michelin-starred chef. Silversea also offers dreamy pre- and post-cruise extensions, along with epic itineraries, making it the choice for cruisers with a bucket list.

PREMIUM LUXURY Premium cruise ships are usually larger than ultra-luxury, with some 900 to 1,200 passengers. These cruises exude a sophisticated country club feel, often with special attention given to dining. Itineraries emphasize experiential travel.

An Azamara ship docked in Ajaccio on the French island of Corsica

AZAMARA CRUISES The atmosphere on Azamara ships encourages camaraderie, while the price point makes luxury affordable. The cruise line’s commitment to port-intensive experiences, with both late-night and overnight stays, echoes Azamara’s philosophy that travel should not be hurried.

Azamara cruises are typically longer and sail to ports less traveled. The Club Spa Suites have a Swiss-style soaking tub and rain-shower combination with outdoor views. Azamara guests value collegial merriment, especially during “White Nights” where everyone dresses in white attire and a buffet is served on deck. Most drinks (nonalcoholic as well as spirits, wine and beer) are included, as is laundry service.

Two couples wearing formal wear to a gala on Cunard cruise ships

CUNARD Travelers associate Cunard with the golden age of cruising, but today’s fleet feels fresh and dynamic, with fans of the line cheering the coming launch of Queen Anne this May. On Cunard, guests put on the ritz for gala evenings and enjoy sumptuous afternoon teas. All staff members train at Cunard’s White Star Academy to ensure the same high level of service, from dining to housekeeping.

Cunard ships are equipped with paddle tennis, two-story libraries and the largest planetariums at sea. New bespoke excursions such as helicopter rides and lobster fishing are making a splash. Cunard’s signature voyage is the Transatlantic Crossing on the Queen Mary 2, with seven nights at sea between New York and Southampton, England.

Elegant dining in Oceania’s Toscana restaurant;

OCEANIA CRUISES As the creator of the premium category some 20 years ago, Oceania continues to lead the niche today. These stylish ships offer both value and luxury. The guest rooms are only slightly smaller than ultra-luxury brands, and because ships are larger, Oceania can offer more dining choices as well as immersive food experiences.

The line launched the industry’s first hands-on cooking school aboard a ship, and Oceania’s Go Local tours provide a deeper understanding of local culture and food. For example, guests can enjoy an Argentine dinner at a local resident’s home, learn to make Irish bread in Belfast or take a paella workshop in Alicante, Spain. The specialty restaurants are available at no extra cost, and Oceania offers private dining experiences in the Privée and La Reserve dining venues.

Viking’s Wintergarden

VIKING CRUISES Viking’s oceangoing ships are known for gracious spaces and access to smaller ports, including on its new China itineraries. Clean design and Nordic artwork represent the company’s Scandinavian heritage. Look for brightness and light in the Wintergarden, where tea is served daily, and the main pool, where a retractable roof adjusts for warm, sunny days or wintery skies. The complimentary thermal suite in the Nordic Spa features several hot and cold immersion options, including the invigorating Snow Grotto, a small glass-enclosed room filled with manmade snow.

From dishing up lively poolside buffets to serving elegant meals in the Main Dining Room, Viking’s chefs have mastered nearly every cuisine and love sharing their talents. Beer, wine and one daily excursion are included.

EXPEDITION Luxury expedition cruises focus on far-flung destinations while not skimping on comfort. These cruise lines cater to guests seeking adventure and access to breathtaking natural places. The small ships can tuck into remote locations, often using Zodiac boats for landing and observation. Newer ships may feature hybrid-electric motors. Onboard naturalists lead excursions, and a number of ships conduct official scientific research. Some programming caters to families and multigenerational travelers.

Hurtigruten’s MS Roald Amundsen during a cruise expedition

HURTIGRUTEN EXPEDITIONS Hurtigruten launched the first expedition cruise in 1896 and still operates the historic Norwegian Coastal Express with stops at tiny hamlets and islands along the Norwegian coastline. Today, the intimate ships of Hurtigruten Expeditions, or HX for short, sail into wild places, marshalling passengers onto kayaks or equipping them with snowshoes and trekking poles for real-life adventure. From night snowmobiling in the Arctic to guided hikes up a Nicaraguan volcano, HX passengers fully immerse themselves in extraordinary landscapes.

Most HX ships have two or three restaurants serving complimentary wine and beer. The ships feature a high-tech Science Center, and some suites boast outdoor hot tubs. The line offers a northern lights promise, which states that if passengers don’t have a recorded sighting of the aurora borealis, they’ll receive a second cruise free.

mand and boy looking at camera, water and ships in background

LINDBLAD EXPEDITIONS Some 60 years ago, Lars-Eric Lindblad was the first explorer to take private citizens to Antarctica and the Galápagos Islands. Now, his family’s cruise line offers more than 100 itineraries across seven continents. Through Lindblad’s partnership with National Geographic, guests can learn from naturalist photographers, who deepen their understanding of pristine environments while teaching composition and technique.

5 best luxury Alaska cruises for 2024

Janice Wald Henderson

Luxury Alaska cruises have a different vibe than posh sailings in balmy climes. Lounging poolside plays second fiddle to shore excursions showcasing the state's spectacular natural wonders. Onboard experiences are uniquely Alaskan; viewing glaciers and wildlife from your ship's spacious decks and listening to fascinating lectures from passionate expert guests overshadow trivia games and wine tastings.

The best Alaska luxury cruises also deliver the pampering luxe-lovers crave. Smiling servers will pass you mugs of hot chocolate while you gape at calving icebergs. Cashmere blankets await you in your suite, so you can stay warm and cozy on your private veranda while taking tail-flipping whale pics.

For cruise news, reviews and tips, sign up for TPG's cruise newsletter .

On luxury lines, many excursions are complimentary. These riveting outings transport you far from crowded ports and touristy shops to pristine forests and lakes or to bucket-list adventures like dog-mushing, glacier-trekking and bear-viewing. Such outings would cost big bucks on premium or contemporary ships. Of course, the cost is folded into a luxury cruise's higher prices, but you'll likely see and experience far more when the activities are included in your fare.

If you're seeking unabashed luxury and thrills galore, try one of these five best luxury Alaska cruises for 2024.

Silversea Cruises

best ultra luxury cruise lines

Silversea Cruises ' newest ship, the 728-passenger Silver Nova , brings the outdoors in with abundant floor-to-ceiling windows, making the ship an idyllic ride for Inside Passage cruising.

Its seven-night Vancouver-to-Seward voyage visits every must-see port — including Ketchikan, Juneau and Skagway — and also sails to the astonishing Hubbard Glacier. Silversea fares include most shore excursions, so you don't have to pay extra to immerse yourself in the best Alaska has to offer.

For instance, in Ketchikan, Silver Nova offers a whopping 12 complimentary shore excursions, such as a Hovercraft cruise with possible wildlife glimpses of eagles and whales, followed by a beach landing in the Tongass National Forest, or a ride on a fully enclosed adventure boat to a marine park for a scrumptious seafood boil with crab, shrimp, clams and mussels at Silverking Lodge. In Sitka, 11 included excursions run the gamut from a mountain hike to an alpine lake with a Champagne toast to a three-hour kayak paddle to a floating base camp.

On board, relish all-suite accommodations, butler service, complimentary sustainable caviar and alcohol. Among 10 notable dining opportunities, seven are complimentary. All gratuities are included. Best of all, this ship's asymmetrical design — new to Silversea — delivers phenomenal views from pretty much everywhere — even in glass elevators.

Silver Nova is offering weeklong cruises, sailing between Vancouver and Seward from May through mid-September 2024. Fares for the June 20 departure start at $4,950 per person.

Regent Seven Seas Cruises

best ultra luxury cruise lines

One of the best luxury Alaska cruise ships is the 746-passenger all-suite Seven Seas Explorer. It's one of Regent Seven Seas Cruises ' most glam ships, and you can pamper yourself on board for a week as you sail from Seward, Alaska to Vancouver, British Columbia. If you love opulence — think exquisite marble and crystal lavished everywhere — and a magnificent multimillion-dollar art collection, look no further than Seven Seas Explorer for your vacation home-suite-home.

Your cruise fare includes so many amenities, like round-trip air, most shore excursions, all specialty dining (don't miss Chartreuse and Pacific Rim), 24-hour in-suite dining, alcohol, airport transfers, gratuities and, my personal favorite, valet laundry service. The biggest suites come with even more perks, such as a one-night pre-cruise hotel and butler service.

In Alaska, count on many notable included excursions, like driving the uber-scenic Klondike Highway, feasting on freshly caught salmon at Liarsville Gold Rush Camp or visiting a sled dog camp (petting allowed). In Juneau, search for humpbacks and orcas on wildlife quests at sea or photograph the mighty Mendenhall Glacier from advantageous viewing points.

Ketchikan is totem territory; here, you can meet a Native American artist demonstrating not only how carvings are done, but the significance to their culture. Or visit a raptor rehab center where you can stare down a bald eagle eye to eye.

Seven Seas Explorer is offering seven-night cruises, sailing between Vancouver and Seward from May through mid-September 2024. Fares for a July 17, 2024, "Summer on the Frontier" cruise start at $6,799 per person.

best ultra luxury cruise lines

Is a week not enough time in Alaska? For more pampered vacation days and more time spent exploring the 49th state, choose the yacht-like, 458-passenger all-suite Seabourn Odyssey and its 11-night round-trip Vancouver voyage for your Alaska luxury cruise.

Although this is the ship's last summer with Seabourn (Seabourn Quest assumes this route in 2025), no shortcuts are taken for the final season fling. Service consistently excels. Count alcohol, Regiis Ova Caviar (a company co-founded by superstar chef Thomas Keller) and gratuities among inclusions. The crew pulls out all the stops for Seabourn's Caviar on the Ice, a complimentary deck party with — you guessed it — loads of caviar to eat and bubbly to sip. It's a riff on Seabourn's iconic Caviar in the Surf party offered in tropical climes and just as scrumptious.

Seabourn Odyssey's timeless design suits the country-club-ish ambience and makes for a cushy onboard experience. All suites but entry level provide private verandas. The ship offers eight complimentary dining venues plus 24-hour in-suite dining. If you like, enjoy the latter for dinner after a day of adventurous excursions; dishes will be served course-by-course. Passengers love the Club, the hangout for afternoon tea and nighttime dancing. Its outdoor terrace lures with two whirlpools and a plunge pool.

While not an expedition vessel, Seabourn Odyssey hosts about 14 experts on Alaska sailings, including academics, scientists and other wildlife experts. They guide the optional (extra fee) Ventures by Seabourn excursions, such as Zodiac, kayaking, hiking and catamaran tours. Highlights include a four- to six-mile hike through a rainforest past a glacial lake to Mendenhall Valley and kayaking to Hubbard Glacier. A professional photographer lectures and offers small-group workshops on how to capture perfect wildlife pics.

Note that this itinerary is longer than most (and Seabourn also offers weeklong sailings), delivering a far deeper immersion into the state's pristine and less-visited allures. For instance, visiting the Inland Islands, Endicott or Tracy Arm and Wrangell are unbeatable. The same goes for scenic cruising in Misty Fjords, with nearly incomparable beauty.

Seabourn Odyssey is offering seven, 10, 11 and 14-night cruises from May through August 2024. Fares for this June 17, 2024, 11-night round-trip Vancouver "Inside Passage and Alaska Fjords" cruise start at $7,799 per person.

Oceania Cruises

best ultra luxury cruise lines

While considered an upper-premium line, Oceania Cruises recently unveiled a novel program called simply MORE, adding many inclusions to standard fares, such as round-trip airfare, airport transfers, most alcohol and a $600 shore excursion credit per passenger. This program ups the cruise ante to luxury-level standards.

Not to mention, Oceania Cruises' ships are stunning, even an older one like the 670-passenger Regatta. Built in 1999, it underwent a major refurbishment in 2019. Expect public spaces in sky and sea hues and an abundance of timeless teak, stone and custom tile work.

Related: The 5 best destinations you can visit on an Oceania Cruises ship

Dining on board is major; all five restaurants excel and are included in the fare (even the fanciest dishes, like prime dry-aged Angus steak and Maine lobster). A complimentary afternoon tea is served daily, with four-tiered pastry carts, artisanal brews and a live string quartet performing.

To complete the luxury experience, book at least a concierge-level veranda (to add free laundry service, cashmere lap blankets, priority boarding and more to your list of perks). Book a suite for 24-hour butler service.

This 10-night round-trip Seattle voyage hits not just the usual stops of Sitka, Ketchikan, Juneau and Skagway. You'll also visit Victoria, British Columbia, for whale-watching, a city walking tour or outings to cider farms and wineries. Stroll the iconic Butchart Gardens, its winding paths ablaze with colorful blooms.

Explore beyond Icy Strait Point, where wildlife outnumbers the primarily Tlingit Indian population. Look out for grizzlies and bald eagles, learn about the Tlingit culture or combine a grizzly bear viewing opportunity with a humpback whale cruise.

If your questions about Alaska aren't answered ashore, onboard guest speakers, such as naturalists, passionately share knowledge about the region's history, culture and environment.

Regatta is offering six-, nine-, 10- and 11-night cruises from May through September 2024. Fares for this July 9, 2024, round-trip Seattle 10-night "Radiant Alaska" cruise start at $3,399 per person.

best ultra luxury cruise lines

While Viking falls in the (self-declared) upper premium category, most cruisers see the line's ships as luxury. Sailing in Alaska, the 930-passenger adults-only Viking Orion offers an elegant and spacious modern Nordic design.

Entry-level cabins offer a generous minimum of 270 square feet, including a private veranda. These cushy digs include a king bed, spacious bath with heated floor and anti-fog mirror, plush robes, turndown service and complimentary soft drink, water and snack minibar. Bigger, costlier accommodations come with complimentary welcome Champagne, a coffee maker and priority booking for shore excursions and restaurants.

The Spa offers complimentary access to its Thermal Suite, where guests can rejuvenate by alternating between a steamy sauna and a frigid Snow Grotto. Daily afternoon tea service is a treat in the gorgeous Wintergarden. It's complimentary, as are the ship's primo specialty restaurants.

Related: The ultimate guide to Viking cruise ships and itineraries

Viking Orion's 10-night cruise between Vancouver and Seward includes scenic sailing of the Inside Passage and Yakutat Bay and a stop at rarely visited Valdez. There, enticing shore excursions include kayaking by Valdez Glacier; flying over glaciers, searching for wildlife in a helicopter; and a UTV (utility terrain vehicle, larger than an ATV) adventure through the Chugach Mountains to the Mineral Creek Canyon. One shore excursion is complimentary in every port.

Viking Orion is offering 10-night 2024 Alaskan voyages between Vancouver and Seward from May until early September 2024. Fares for this July 3, 2024, Vancouver to Seward 10-night sail start at $6,999 per person.

The 11 Best Cruise Lines for Adults

By Janice Wald Henderson

Seabourn Venture

The world's best cruise lines for adults have one major perk in common: the child-free utopia passengers are afforded while sailing. Daydreaming on deck , leisurely romantic dinners, dancing into the wee hours, popping champagne, and even getting tatted—such unabashed joys have everything to do with being grownup and nothing to do with kids.

The best adult cruises allow passengers to pursue relaxation, rejuvenation, and indulgence, undisturbed by tantrum-minded toddlers and other children potentially ruining your me-time groove. For when it's time to sail away from the stresses of life on land, we've pulled together the very best cruise lines for adults, plus their most exciting itineraries available for booking in 2024 and early 2025.

Note that while some of these lines are strictly adults-only, others are adults-oriented, meaning that they may have some well-behaved older children on board during school holidays but otherwise, rarely do. Most are small ship experiences with geared-to-grownup itineraries spanning the globe and leaning into all-inclusiveness and luxury—all the better to admire when it’s all about you.

Formerly Crystal Cruises, the adults-driven luxury line was purchased by Abercrombie & Kent Travel Group, then dramatically remodeled and reborn as Crystal. Its legions of fiercely loyal fans are largely back, as are many familiar crew who pamper passengers incessantly. Its two gorgeous ships, 740-passenger Crystal Serenity and 606-passenger Crystal Symphony , fairly ooze sophistication and style. Crystal renewed its partnership with Nobu Matsuhisa; the line's award-winning onboard restaurant Umi Uma presents the globally renowned chef’s only plates at-sea. These ships voyage most of the world, with inclusions like nearly all dining, alcohol, 24-hour room service, gratuities, butler service, and WiFi.

The sailing to take this year: Crystal Serenity offers a 12-day Cape Town to Tema, Ghana , visiting Namibia , Angola, and São Tomé, a dual-island nation dubbed Africa’s Galápagos.
