Star Trek: Discovery season 4: everything we know

Spoilers ahead

The cast of Star Trek: Discovery, which is returning for season 4 on Paramount Plus in 2021.

  • Release date

Star Trek : Discovery season 4 will warp onto Paramount Plus on November 18, 2021, and a new trailer has dropped as the date gets closer.

With Michael Burnham now installed as the captain of the ship – the show's fourth commanding officer in as many years – Star Trek: Discovery season 4 will see the crew continuing to explore the distant future of the 32nd century. Having solved the mystery of the so-called “Burn” that had rendered warp travel impossible, and defeated the criminal empire of the Emerald Chain, attentions should now be turning to restoring the Federation to its former glories. Unfortunately, it sounds like a new antagonist is about to get in the way, in the form of a dangerous gravitational anomaly five light years across.

With Saru, Tilly, Stamets, Culber and all the principal bridge crew back in action, Star Trek: Discovery 4 is set to continue the franchise's ongoing adventures on the final frontier. Here's everything you need to know, but be warned – Spoilers lie ahead for anyone yet to watch the previous seasons.

Release date: Star Trek Discovery season 4 will release on November 18 in the US. The show will roll out on Paramount Plus in the US, and is expected to stream on Netflix elsewhere.

Story: With Burnham now installed as captain, as mentioned above, the USS Discovery will contend with a massive gravitational anomaly in the 32nd century – the idea is that the crew is dealing with a massive problem to solve this season rather than a specific villain.

Is there a trailer? Yes. A first teaser for Discovery season 4 debuted in April 2021, and another full trailer dropped in October 2021.

Star Trek: Discovery season 4 release date

It was confirmed at the Star Trek Day event on September 8 that Star Trek: Discovery season 4 will debut on November 18 in the US.

The show will release on Paramount Plus , the rebranded version of CBS All Access. Outside the US we expect that – like the previous seasons – the show will stream on Netflix, where it's usually available within hours of its American debut.

The previous season had barely even started airing when Star Trek: Discovery season 4 got the official greenlight on October 16, 2020. Two weeks later, on November 2, production got underway at the show’s Toronto base, and continued until August 2021 – the end of shooting was confirmed in a tweet from showrunner Michelle Paradise .

Inevitably, Covid-19 restrictions were a major factor in the shoot. For starters, as dictated by Canadian rules, the cast had to isolate for two weeks before coming to set.

Star Trek: Discovery season 4 also reportedly  took advantage of a pipeline put in place for the previous season, after coronavirus restrictions kicked in. “Our editors, miraculously and heroically, took their editing bays into their living rooms,” Alex Kurtzman, executive producer and overseer of Star Trek’s current raft of TV shows, told IndieWire . “We also scored the entire season [3], mixed the entire season, color-timed the entire season, all from [a] laptop .”

Reports suggest the process was further refined on Star Trek: Discovery season 4, with Space.com revealing that the show will make use of the groundbreaking augmented reality LED screens pioneered by The Mandalorian . Suddenly the fact that travel for location filming was off the table didn't seem quite so much of a problem...

Star Trek: Discovery season 4 cast

This is the current roll call for Star Trek: Discovery season 4:

  • Sonequa Martin-Green as Captain Michael Burnham
  • Doug Jones as Saru
  • Anthony Rapp as Lt Cmdr Paul Stamets
  • Wilson Cruz as Dr Hugh Culber
  • David Ajala as Book
  • Mary Wiseman as Ensign Sylvia Tilly
  • Blu del Barrio as Adira
  • Ian Alexander as Gray
  • Oded Fehr as Admiral Charles Vance
  • Oyin Oladejo as Lt Joann Owosekun
  • Emily Coutts as Lt Keyla Detmer
  • Patrick Kwok-Choo as Lt Gen Rhys
  • Ronnie Rowe as Lt R.A. Bryce
  • Sara Mitich as Lt Nilsson
  • David Cronenberg as Kovich

It’s a case of ‘as you were’, with most of the established cast returning for another tour of duty – presumably they’re excited to be wearing new-look, Trek-appropriate primary-colored uniforms that don’t look quite so much like tracksuits.

It goes without saying that Sonequa Martin-Green is back as Captain Michael Burnham, and even though her predecessor in the big chair, Saru, has relocated to his home planet of Kaminar, Doug Jones still has a part to play. “It felt important for all of our characters to find new layers for them, to find new place for them to go, new things for our actors to play, and new ways for the characters to go,” showrunner Michelle Paradise told TVInsider . “[In season 3 we highlighted] that Saru hasn’t had a huge connection to Kaminar since leaving, and in a season that is all about connection – family connection and cultural connection – it seemed like an organic place to explore that theme with him.”

Among the lead cast, Anthony Rapp and Wilson Cruz reprise their roles as Lt Cmdr Paul Stamets and Dr Hugh Culber, while season 3 standout David Ajala is back as the 32nd century’s most famous feline owner, Cleveland ‘Book’ Booker. (Sadly, a Grudge the Cat spin-off is yet to be announced.) And surely Mary Wiseman’s Sylvia Tilly will be looking to make the First Officer role her own.

“[Saru] sees strength in [Tilly] she doesn’t quite see in herself necessarily,” Paradise said in TVInsider. “Then, [we watched] her over the course of the season become more confident in herself to the place where she’s ultimately able to serve as Number One, and having to essentially be acting captain in this crisis situation, where she handles herself beautifully. What does that mean to come is, I’m sure, a question she’ll be asking herself and we’ll be exploring in Season 4.”

The supporting bridge crew will surely be hoping to have a few more stories of their own, continuing their slow evolution from background players to actual characters – now we know that Lt Joann Owosekun (Oyin Oladejo) can hold her breath for 10 minutes, the sky’s the limit. It’ll be interesting to see what – if anything – is in store for Lt Keyla Detmer (Emily Coutts), Lt Gen Rhys (Patrick Kwok-Choon), Lt R.A. Bryce (Ronnie Rowe) and Lt Nilsson (Sara Mitich).

Third season newcomer Blu del Barrio also returns as Adira, human host of the Trill symbiont Tal, along with their boyfriend, Gray (Ian Alexander). Dr Culber’s efforts to give Gray – who can only be seen and heard by Adira – physical form will be a big part of the season, as Gray becomes more and more integrated with the crew. “For season 4 I’ve had a lot more hands-on involvement, like my suggestions for the future of Gray,” Alexander told Inverse . “They already have so much planned. Michelle [Paradise] and Alex [Kurtzman] already have this vision that I’ve very, very excited for everyone to be able to see.”

“Culber does make a promise in our season three finale to Gray that, ‘You will be truly seen,’” Paradise said on a Discovery panel at Outfest (via TrekMovie ). “And we absolutely do pay that off in season four. That storyline and making sure we pay it off is hugely important.” It was confirmed by Wilson Cruz (Dr Culber) at Star Trek Day (via Variety ) that Gray will be gaining a corporeal form in Star Trek: Discovery season 4.

Anthony Rapp, who plays Stamets, added that Stamets, Culber, Adira and Gray will become a family in Star Trek: Discovery season 4: “Parenting – they’re not children but they are young people – the pressures of how to be available to be a mentor or guide or parent in the face of job responsibilities and sort of crises, that’s an interesting sort of sub-thread through the through the season… There’s more in the ways Paul and Hugh continue to evolve in their relationship. This is certainly explored also in this season.”

And there’ll be at least two familiar faces at Federation headquarters, where Oded Fehr (Admiral Charles Vance) and legendary movie director David Cronenberg (the mysterious Kovich) will be pulling some strings behind the scenes.

Star Trek: Discovery season 4 plot

Star trek: discovery season 4 plot: what can we expect to see.

Michelle Paradise is keeping her cards closer to her chest than The Next Generation crew at one of their regular poker games, though she did admit to TVInsider in January 2021 that the Discovery crew are hanging around in the 32nd century, rather than looking for a way back to their original pre-Kirk-and-Spock timeline. “I don’t expect that,” she said. “All of [the crew] knew going into that at the end of season 2 that this is a one-way trip. Now that they are here, we’re not looking to go back.”

What does that mean for plotlines? “I don’t want to speak specifically to themes, but we do have them!” she joked to ComicBook.com . “I think season 4 will absolutely continue the kinds of things we were doing in season 3, in that we do have very strong themes that we’re exploring. Star Trek: The Original Series explored present-day things via sci-fi. And that’s what we did in season 3, and I think that’s just baked into what Star Trek does.

“Ultimately the thing that really resonates, I think, with people is, what are our characters experiencing? What are they going through? How are they connecting with one another? What are the challenges they’re facing and how do they overcome them individually and then as a family? All of that I think will continue.”

With the Emerald Chain out of the way, it looks like the threat in Star Trek: Discovery season 4 will be rather different this time out. The trailer reveals that the crew is dealing with a gravitational anomaly “five light years across”, rather than a specific human or alien foe – a force that, as Tilly explains, “could go anywhere, and we may not have any kind of warning at all”.

“We’re actually exploring – we’re diving deep into science – in the fourth season, in a kind of new and interesting way,” said Kurtzman in a panel hosted by Deadline (via TrekMovie ). “There have been many kinds of villains over the course of Star Trek. What happens when the villain is not actually any kind of living, breathing entity, but something else? How do you solve that problem?”

Could we be looking at something technological Discovery season 2's hostile AI, Control? Or a lethal inorganic structure like the Crystalline Entity from Star Trek: The Next Generation? ScreenRant has suggested the rather plausible theory that the anomaly could be V’Ger, the rogue space probe from Star Trek: The Motion Picture. In the finale of that movie, V’Ger merged with USS Enterprise first officer Will Decker to attain a new level of consciousness – who knows what it might be capable of nearly a thousand years later...

We can expect Star Trek: Discovery season 4 to follow a similar structure to previous years, with each season based around a self-contained story arc, with just a few loose ends left untied.

“Discovery has that sort of serialized, season-long story baked into its DNA,” Paradise said in an interview with Inverse . “We also wanted to give the show a more episodic feel in season 3. We got to explore a story of the week or a villain of the week – it gives us time to explore some of our characters who we normally wouldn’t have time to explore. That was definitely a choice on our part and will continue on our show.”

What questions does Star Trek: Discovery season 4 need to answer?

With the origins of the so-called ‘Burn’ revealed – who’d have guessed it was caused by a grieving kid with a symbiotic relationship to a planet made of dilithium? – and Osyraa and her Emerald Chain defeated, Star Trek: Discovery season 4 flies into uncharted waters.

Hopefully that means that Discovery and the crew can use the spore drive to truly explore the strange new worlds of the 32nd century – though, given this show’s love of callbacks to earlier series, it’s almost inevitable we’ll meet some familiar faces and species. (The presence in the trailer of a Federation official – possibly the president – who has a mix of human and Cardassian facial features suggests that those long-standing Deep Space Nine foes may be up for a comeback, this time in the Starfleet camp.)

Part of Starfleet's remit will be rebuilding a Federation that's a shadow of what it was 900 years earlier. The trailer suggests that many worlds will have to pull together to defeat a threat that affects Federation and non-Federation “equally” – as Burnham puts it, “We are not in this alone”.

“The Federation is coming back together but it’s not fully back together,” Kurtzman told the aforementioned Deadline panel. “And so the continued mission of bringing other worlds in and meeting the criteria and standards of what it means to be a member of the Federation but also not to rob other cultures of their identity is something that we’ll explore.”

The biggest ongoing question Star Trek: Discovery season 4 needs to address is the nature of the ‘Sphere Data’, the ancient alien intelligence now integrated with Discovery’s databanks. Protecting it was the reason the ship made the one-way trip to the future in the first place, and it seems to be repaying the favor – first by helping the crew’s mental wellbeing, then by helping Tilly to forcibly eject the Emerald Chain from the ship. It’s a story that seems to be heading towards Short Trek episode ‘Calypso’, set in a distant future where Discovery is run by a sentient computer.

“‘Calypso’ is incredible,” Paradise told ComicBook.com . “And it is now a part of Trek canon , but specifically our show’s canon. It takes place many, many years beyond where our heroes are right now, and at some point, we will absolutely have to match up with that so that Discovery as a whole, including ‘Calypso’, all fits together as a piece.

“Certainly, bringing in that voice in episode four and having – we’ll call her Zora, she doesn't have a name at this point – but having her hide in the DOTs [helper robots on board Discovery] and be part of the story is the beginning of driving toward that. And eventually – who knows when? – we will absolutely have to make sure that we sync up with that.”

And then there’s the small matter of Stamets having issues with the way Burnham left his husband, Dr Culber, in a radiation-filled nebula in the season 3 finale. “I think that’s one they’ll get past in time,” Paradise said in TVLine .

‘Star Trek: Discovery’ Season 4 Leads With Its Heart

Where to stream:.

CBS All Access

Patrick Stewart Was Asked To Wear A Wig At His 'Star Trek' Audition — A Wig That Flew By Itself From Heathrow To LAX

Tom hardy "never said 'good morning'" or "good night" while filming 'star trek: nemesis,' says patrick stewart, stream it or skip it: ‘star trek: lower decks’ season 4 on paramount+, featuring the continuing (mis)adventures of starfleet’s proudest platoon members, best star trek gifts for trekkie fans in 2023.

When  Star Trek: Discovery premiered on what was then called CBS All Access, the show was a bold, dark, innovative reinvention of the  Star Trek franchise. Shows, and even some of the movies, had been serialized before. Discovery ‘s willingness, though, to seemingly obliterate its premise every episode led to jaw-dropping moment after jaw-dropping moment. It was purposefully alarming, purposefully divisive, but also helped launch Paramount’s next generation of Star Trek series that now includes  Picard, Lower Decks, Prodigy and the soon to come direct spinoff series  Strange New Worlds .

But on the just debuted fourth season of  Star Trek: Discovery , the series isn’t dropping shocks-a-minute; instead, with the crew established and the characters beloved, the series is now taking the time to lead boldly not with surprises, but with tremendous amounts of heart.

In the new season (the first four episodes were provided for review), the crew of  Discovery is now firmly established in a far-flung future, nearly 1000 years after the events of Seasons 1 and 2. Last season, they figured out what caused The Burn, a massive event that isolated the galaxy and nearly wrecked the Federation. When we pick up in “Kobayashi Maru”, the Federation is slowly rebuilding, the galaxy is reconnecting, and Michael Burnham (Sonequa Martin-Green) is captain of the ship .

Mind you, that doesn’t mean that Burnham isn’t still going on away missions and saving the day whenever she can. But thanks to the addition of a new character, Chelah Horsdal’s politically inclined Federation President Laira Rillak, she’s being challenged to think about things a different way. How can Burnham lead her crew if she’s also constantly throwing herself in the way of danger? Is making herself the only one who can solve problems a way of choosing the best resource; or is centering the narrative around herself a way of avoiding responsibility, by taking all of it? It’s a fascinating discussion that doesn’t just test Burnham, it also takes to task the rogue adventurer nature of every captain in the Star Trek franchise for the past several decades.

That’s not to say that  Star Trek: Discovery Season 4 is a political clash of ideologies, though that plays heavily into the season as it moves forward. Instead, the promising nature of the rebuilt Federation comes crashing to a halt thanks to the season premiere’s cliffhanger — and  spoilers past this point — which sees the destruction of Cleveland “Book” Booker’s (David Ajala) home planet of Kwejian. This isn’t the first time a planet’s explosion has kicked off a Star Trek plot, most notably the destruction of Vulcan in the 2009  Star Trek film. But here the tragedy isn’t the start of a rollicking adventure, it’s something that all the characters feel; most notably Book, though it touches every corner of the galaxy. And the fight here, at least in the early going, isn’t against some vengeful enemy or mad scientist; it’s a light years wide anomaly , which provides an impossible scientific challenge and stretches every member of the crew to their limits.

If you thought a massive, unknowable force coming for everyone is reminiscent of a certain pandemic we’re still in the middle of? You would be correct. That is, in fact, the direct analogue the show is working with this season, from the strapped scientists trying to solve the problem, to the populace of the galaxy reacting in big ways; some helpful, some extremely combative. But like the best of Star Trek , this season attempts to use COVID as a starting point, versus a one to one analogy. You can see the inspiration, but it’s not distracting.

What  Discovery gets right, though, is the enormous well of emotion that infused everyone, particularly in the early stages of the pandemic. It’s tough to watch at times, particularly when it comes to Ajala’s heartbreaking performance, or Anthony Rapp’s Paul Stamets desperately trying to fix this problem all by himself. But what you get more than anything else is that after fighting the Mirror Universe, villainous AI, and being flung into a future where everyone they knew are all long dead and gone, the crew of  Discovery are now each other’s family. There’s even families in that family, thanks to Adira (Blu del Barrio) and Gray Tal (Ian Alexander), who have essentially been adopted by Stamets and Dr. Hugh Culber (Wilson Cruz). But those bonds extend to the rest of the crew, too, including a more emotionally stable Saru (Doug Jones), and Tilly (Mary Wiseman), who is trying to find her own place during these tumultuous times. Even the rest of the crew on deck gets powerful one on one moments to express their feelings about what’s going on in the universe, to stand up and be counted and make a difference.

Mind you, it’s early going. The first four episodes definitely throw some twists at the crew as they try to figure out what the anomaly is, and how to stop it. And there’s every possibility that a vengeful enemy or mad scientist could be behind it, once the season continues. There also are big changes and shake-ups in store, but even those are treated with more depth of emotion and heart than you might have seen in the cold, combative first season of the show. When  Discovery began, they were at war with an enemy, but also with each other and their basic natures. In Season 4, the crew of  Discovery is united, whole, and providing comfort and hope both to each other, and to a world that needs that right now. Maybe that’s the most radical reinvention of all.

Star Trek: Discovery streams Thursdays on Paramount+.

In 2017, the venerable “ Star Trek ” science fiction franchise had gone a full twelve years without a new series, after UPN aired the series finale of “Enterprise” in 2005. That changed when Paramount released “ Star Trek: Discovery ” on their CBS All Access (since rebranded to Paramount+ ) streamer, kicking off a new era for the IP.

Now, seven years later, the series is set to take its own bow. The fifth and last season of “Discovery” is set to premiere this April, and Paramount+ has released a new trailer for the series’ swan song.

Although this season will mark the end of “Discovery,” it’s not the final chapter of “Star Trek” on Paramount+. Since the show’s premiere, several other franchise shows have premiered on the streamer, including the concluded “Picard” and the ongoing “Strange New Worlds,” as well as comedic animated series “Lower Decks.”

Martin-Green leads the cast of “Discovery,” which also includes Doug Jones, Anthony Rapp, Mary Wiseman, Wilson Cruz , David Ajala, Blu del Barrio, and Callum Keith Rennie. Alex Kurtzman and Michelle Paradise co-showrun the series, and executive produce with Martin-Green, Heather Kadin, Aaron Baiers, Olatunde Osunsanmi, Frank Siracusa, John Weber, Rod Roddenberry, and Trevor Roth. CBS Studios produces the series in association with Secret Hideout and Roddenberry Entertainment.

The fifth and final season will find Captain Burnham and the crew of the U.S.S. Discovery uncovering a mystery that will send them on an epic adventure across the galaxy to find an ancient power whose very existence has been deliberately hidden for centuries. But there are others on the hunt as well…dangerous foes who are desperate to claim the prize for themselves and will stop at nothing to get it.

Star trek: discovery season 4 ending explained (in detail).

Star Trek: Discovery's season 4 finale saw Captain Burnham face Species 10-C and save the galaxy, setting up a brighter season 5 of exploration.

Warning: SPOILERS for Star Trek: Discovery Season 4 Finale - "Coming Home"

The USS Discovery finally came face-to-face with Species 10-C in Star Trek: Discovery season 4's finale, which resolved the major storylines and set Captain Michael Burnham (Sonequa Martin-Green) on a path towards exploring the future. As the Dark Matter Anomaly nearly destroyed Earth and Ni'Var, Burnham and her Starfleet crew had to stop Dr. Ruon Tarka (Shawn Doyle) from attacking Species 10-C and complete their First Contact mission in order to save their homeworld and the galaxy at large.

The first half of Star Trek: Discovery' s spectacular season 4 finale, "Coming Home," dealt with two major problems: stopping Dr. Tarka, who held Cleveland Booker (David Ajala) and Commander Jett Reno (Tig Notaro) prisoner aboard Book's ship, and discovering who aboard Discovery helped Tarka and Booker to sabotage the First Contact mission. The latter was easy since General Ndoye (Phumzile Sitole) confessed to being Tarka's conspirator but she acted out of her desire to save her homeworld, United Earth. Ndoye then volunteered to pilot a shuttle to stop Book's ship from destroying Species 10-C's powerful hyperfield . Ndoye rammed Book's ship, which led to its destruction. Ndyoye was beamed back aboard Discovery but Book's signal was lost mid-transport. As for Tarka, he met his demise along with Book's ship. Thankfully, Book's cat, Grudge, was safely aboard Discovery all along.

Meanwhile, United Federation of Planets headquarters warped to Earth with Admiral Charles Vance (Oded Fehr) and Lt. Sylvia Tilly (Mary Wiseman), who left Discovery to teach at Starfleet Academy, leading the evacuation. Tragically, only 400,000+ could be evacuated by Starfleet from Earth. Regardless of the impossible odds, Vance and Tilly continued the evacuation and bonded thanks to their impending doom. But they and Earth were spared when Discovery's heroes successfully talked Species 10-C into withdrawing the DMA. Unlike the prior season finales of Star Trek: Discovery , season 4's climax did not rely on action or Captain Burnham saving the day with risk-taking heroics. Instead, the pivotal First Contact between the Federation and Species 10-C relied on the exchange of emotions and each sides' best ideals to find a common solution. "Coming Home" crystallized a new direction for Star Trek: Discovery that embraces the highest ideals of Star Trek.

Star Trek Makes Real-Life Stacey Abrams The President Of Earth

Discovery Burnham Stacey Abrams

Stacey Abrams was revealed as the President of United Earth in a shocking, climactic cameo at the end of Star Trek: Discovery 's season 4 finale. Abrams is a diehard Star Trek fan who even hosted an online Star Trek event in 2020 to help the elections of Reverend Raphael Warnock and Jon Ossoff. Star Trek: Discovery 's director, Olatunde Osunsanmi told Screen Rant in an interview that Abrams was friends with Wilson Cruz, who plays Discovery's Chief Medical Officer and Counselor Dr. Hugh Culber . Though Cruz, Abrams met Star Trek: Discovery 's showrunner, Michelle Paradise and executive producer Alex Kurtzman, and they arranged to have the Georgia politician cameo in the show, eventually deciding to make Abrams United Earth's previously unseen President.

Abrams' appearance as the President gave her the opportunity to act alongside Sonequa Martin-Green's Captain Burnham, and she also formally announced that United Earth is rejoining the Federation. Earth broke away from the Federation after The Burn happened and remained an isolated world for over a century, redesignating itself as United Earth. The fact that Discovery's homeworld was missing from the Federation was a painful reminder of how broken the 32nd century was, but United Earth returning to the fold marks a bright new beginning for the Federation and Earth. It's unclear if Stacey Abrams will reprise her role as United Earth's President in Star Trek: Discovery season 5 but it was a jaw-dropping cameo nonetheless.

Star Trek: Discovery's Species 10-C Explained (Fully)

Discovery Species 10C

Species 10-C is a Star Trek alien race unlike any other in the franchise. Star Trek: Discover y wisely took the opportunity to create a thoroughly alien species that would test Starfleet's heroes patience, understanding, and their commitment to seeking out new life and new civilizations. Because they reside in another galaxy beyond the Galactic Barrier, the intriguing Species 10-C wasn't bound by Star Trek's tradition where most aliens are humanoid in appearance. Instead, Species 10-C is the size of skyscrapers and, because of their completely alien brain patterns, universal translators are useless. This required Burnham and her team to find a new way to communicate with them. But Species 10-C has a complex system of emotions as the basis for their language, and this gave Discovery the building blocks to begin First Contact.

Related: Discovery's DMA Plan Means Earth Is Being Attacked For The 9th Time

Crucially, Species 10-C isn't a villainous or malevolent race. They are a lifeform that has achieved a higher state of evolution and technological superiority to the point where they were unaware of and didn't consider the denizens of the Milky Way Galaxy to be higher life forms. While they were confused by Discovery's appearance and by Book and Tarka's attempt to attack them, Species 10-C was patient and curious about Discovery's peaceful overtures. Species 10-C also didn't use the DMA as a weapon intentionally; the anomaly was simply a device they employed to harvest the boronite they needed to power their protective hyperfield. Curiously, despite reaching an understanding with Species 10-C, the Federation delegates didn't attempt to ask them what they prefer to be called. They remain "Species 10-C" and it remains to be seen if the Federation will maintain contact with the extragalactic race or if Species 10-C will even join the Federation.

How Book And Discovery Saved Earth At The End Of Season 4

Discovery Book Finale

The USS Discovery faced a ticking clock as the DMA neared Earth, with Species 10-C, again, unaware of the damage their device could cause. But Species 10-C also rescued Book because they intercepted his transporter signal when Discovery tried to beam him aboard . Thus, Species 10-C was able to return Book safely, so the former courier was never dead. However, the same cannot be said of Dr. Tarka. Tarka was presumably killed when Book's ship exploded and he was unable to use his device to harness the hyperfield's energy to send him into the Multiverse, which was his goal all along and why Ruon was willing to risk a war between the Federation and Species 10-C. While anything can happen in Star Trek, Tarka is probably dead.

Once back with Michael and the Federation delegates, it was Book who successfully pleaded with Species 10-C to deactivate the DMA. Of course, the DMA destroyed Book's homeworld of Kwejian . As the person who lost the most because of the DMA, it was fitting that Book was able to make Species 10-C realize the devastation their Anomaly sowed in the Federation's galaxy. As a Kwejian, Book has powers that attune him to the emotions of living beings, and this allowed him to reach Species 10-C and convince them that their DMA was dangerous and hurt living beings. Species 10-C agreed not to use the DMA any longer and safely sent the USS Discovery through a wormhole back to their own galaxy.

Saru And President T'Rina Are Officially Star Trek's Newest Couple

Saru and TRina

Captain Saru (Doug Jones) and Ni'Var President T'Rina (Tara Rosling) were attracted to each other from their first meeting in Star Trek: Discovery season 3, but their slow-burn romance has finally become official and it was Saru's primary Discovery season 4 storyline . Although they shared several intimate moments in Star Trek: Discovery seasons 3 and 4, Saru was confused and disheartened when the Vulcan behaved cooly toward him during their First Contact mission with Species 10-C. However, Saru came to understand that T'Rina had to focus on her duties and responsibilities as President and diplomat during the crisis. After their First Contact with Species 10-C was a success, T'Rina and Saru finally decided to pursue romance. On a show with many love stories like Burnham and Book and Dr. Culber and Commander Paul Stamets (Anthony Rapp), the Kelpien and the Vulcan are, at last, Star Trek: Discovery 's newest couple.

Book's Punishment Compared To Burnham's From Discovery Season 1

Discocery Book Michael

Although Book was able to make Species 10-C stop using the DMA, the fact remained he went rogue and nearly plunged the Federation into a war with the extragalactic aliens. However, Book was only doing what he thought was right. In this way, Book echoes Michael, who also acted unilaterally to do what she thought was right but ended up sparking the Klingon War in Star Trek: Discovery season 1. However, as President Laira Rillak (Chelah Horsdal) said, "reasons do matter," and Book was spared a prison sentence. Instead, he was assigned to help refugees who were displaced by the DMA, although this separates him from Michael for the foreseeable future. Still, compared to the prison sentence Michael served in 2256, Book's lenient punishment is a sign that the 32nd century Federation has learned the vital lesson that "reasons do matter," compared to the 23rd century Federation . The similarities between Book and Michael are another powerful sign that they were made for each other.

Discovery Season 5 Will Explore Star Trek's 32nd Century Future

Discovery Federation

After facing down the back-to-back intergalactic crises of The Burn and the DMA and emerging victorious, the USS Discovery's crew finally earned rest and they disembarked for vacations. Discovery's heroes get to spend quality time on Earth for the first time in 930 years. However, Captain Burnham and Star Trek: Discovery will definitely return for season 5. While Star Trek: Discovery 's season 4 finale didn't end with a cliffhanger or an explicit setup for the next season, clues can glean what's next for Burnham and her crew.

Thanks to Ni'Var and United Earth rejoining, the Federation is growing stronger. When Captain Burnham spoke to United Earth's President, she noted how much is left of the galaxy there is to explore. Star Trek: Discovery 's 32nd-century setting allows it to write all-new canon but, thus far, the past two seasons have been focused on season-long threats. After the success with Species 10-C, Burnham's desire to explore could signal that the USS Discovery will finally spend more time seeking out new life and new civilizations. Star Trek: Discovery season 4 was noticeably less action-oriented and featured a greater focus on moral and ethical dilemmas in the classic style of Star Trek: The Original Series and Star Trek: The Next Generation . Star Trek: Discovery season 5 may let Captain Burnham and the USS Discovery boldly explore to see who and what's out there in the 32nd century.

Star Trek: Discovery's Final Season Will Focus on More of an 'Adventure Vibe' | IGN Fan Fest 2024

Discovery's cast talks about what to expect from its final season following the release of the trailer..

Adam Bankhurst

Star Trek: Discovery's final season is nearly here and a brand-new trailer has just arrived to give us another glimpse of this "last dance" for Captain Burnham and her crew. To celebrate this moment, we also had the chance to talk to a few members of the cast about what makes these remaining episodes and this show so special and what the future may hold.

The trailer, which you can watch above, is very much a time for the crew of the U.S.S. Discovery to reminisce about the "hell of a journey" they've all been on and how they've all become a family through their adventures, triumphs, and heartbreaks. It's also an action-packed look at the mission to search for one of the "greatest powers ever known" that could be "very dangerous in the wrong hands."

Star Trek: Discovery is entering its final season.

Discovery's final season will kick off on April 4, 2024 , and Sonequa Martin-Green (Michael Burnham), Doug Jones (Saru), Wilson Cruz (Dr. Hugh Culber), and Anthony Rapp (Paul Stamets) shared with IGN what they will cherish most about their time on the show and where they hope Star Trek goes from here.

Rapp began by talking about how Season 5 of Star Trek: Discovery will boldly go where the show hasn't gone before while also honoring what made Star Trek into the global phenomenon it has become.

"In terms of the tone of the season, the sense of the quest and adventure vibe is probably a little different than some of the other seasons we’ve had," Rapp said. "The nooks and crannies of this adventure take us into some very interesting questions and territories which are very Star Trek. It’s able to bridge the gap of the fun adventure without sacrificing the moral complexity of what Star Trek has always been about as well."

The legacy of Star Trek: Discovery

As for what the legacy Star Trek: Discovery will be, Rapp thinks one of the biggest parts of it will be representation.

"Star Trek has always been about representation in a big way, but I think we took it to another level. I think that really mattered and has mattered to a lot of people. It was a long time coming. It was too long. They really did try to break down these barriers of queer representation back in Star Trek: The Next Generation, but the powers that be said no. There was a lot more fear dictating these sorts of choices, so we were very fortunate in the late teens and early 2020s that we had forces behind us saying yes and recognizing that representation matters, that it makes a difference, and that it's important that the future reflects the way our world looks."

"To give our fan base something they've always wanted and to be those characters means a lot," Cruz added.

Burnham then discussed what being the first Black female captain in Star Trek meant to her and how the honor means more than words can hope to convey.

"It means so many things on so many levels," Burnham said. "It means so much to me artistically, culturally, relationally, and spiritually. And being able to be Captain Burnham as the first Black woman captain and to be part of Discovery as a whole, which had a lot of firsts in this franchise, means a lot. It means more than I can say, literally."

Star Trek has always been about representation in a big way, but I think we took it to another level

Lastly, Cruz took the time to look forward and share what he would love to see in the future of this beloved franchise that has always tried to push the boundaries and showcase the best of humanity.

"What is incredible relevant about Star Trek is the need for connection," Cruz said. "In this moment, where we are as a culture and politically, we couldn't need that lesson and message more. So, I hope that Star Trek continues to inspire us, to show us to appreciate each other's differences, to reach out to each other, and to build bridges and not walls."

Star Trek: Discovery Season 4 Episode 8 Review: All In

Star Trek: Discovery returns from its midseason break with a surprisingly uneventful installment that doesn't move Season 4's plot forward much.

series 4 star trek discovery

The following contains Star trek: Discovery spoilers.

Star Trek Discovery Season 4 Episode 8

It’s been a month since Star Trek: Discovery has been on our screens, so you’d be forgiven for hoping that the series’ return from its midseason break might at last offer up some answers about the big Season 4 mystery surrounding the Dark Matter Anomaly and the mysterious Species 10-C that created it. Or at least move Season 4’s overall plot along a bit more deliberately than this particular hour manages to do. Instead, “All In” is a decent enough hour in a world where we haven’t had a new episode in several weeks, but one that’s more focused on Michael and Book’s relationship and whether it will be able to survive his decision to embrace Ruon Tarka’s plan to destroy the DMA.

The last-minute revelation that Species 10-C is some sort of highly evolved race with dangerously advanced technological capabilities that are using the DMA to dredge for the tiny energy-rich elements needed to power its vast Faraday cage-style space dome is intriguing. (And lends credence to the Federation’s fear that attempting to destroy the DMA–and thereby damage Species 10-C’s power supply—could lead to a war no one wants or is ready to fight.) But it all feels a bit tacked on to the rest of the hour, and one can only hope we’ll get to delve into all this in a more substantive way during next week’s installment.

In all honesty, a lot of “All In” feels as though it’s made of moments that might have been better served in different episodes: Hugh Culber’s stress breakdown that gets just a single scene to play out, Michael’s sudden interest in Owo’s mental state even though the two have barely spoken this season, and the revelation of the lieutenant commander’s apparent cage-fighting skills, just for a start. Yet, the hour’s criminal underworld setting and vague heist vibes are a welcome reprieve from the recent run of Discovery episodes that have largely tended to involve people arguing around a Federation Headquarters’ desk as much as I have enjoyed the depth of their conversations. (Speaking of which, are we just…never seeing Tilly again? Even though Discovery is constantly at what is essentially home base?)

Ad – content continues below

As most of us likely expected, the bulk of this episode focuses on the aftermath of Book’s decision to steal the prototype spore drive and head off to try and destroy the DMA on his own. Michael, naturally, is torn between her love for her partner and her duty to the Federation—whose inclination to diplomacy she fully supports in this particular instance. Though both Admiral Vance and President Rillak tell her to keep out of it, as she is obviously too close to what’s happening to be involved, Vance counts on her not listening to those instructions and manages to give her a secondary mission—tracking down some star charts from a less advanced species whose homeworld is basically across the galactic barrier from where Species 10-C exists—that allows her to go after Book anyway.

I keep thinking that at some point, I’m going to get over how annoying it is that Michael has bent and broken the rules so often that it’s now not only expected of her but behavior that is actively encouraged, and yet. Here I am! To be fair, Season 4 has been remarkably good at delineating the differences between Michael Burnham, Starfleet officer, and Michael Burnham, Starfleet captain, and what her change in station has meant for the way she’s had to approach problems and manage competing loyalties.

But so much of this episode feels like backsliding on that front, and suddenly we’re right back to Michael doing things she shouldn’t and getting rewarded for them in the end. Even her admission at the end of the hour that she’ll have to do whatever’s necessary to stop Book and Tarka from destroying the DMA rings more hollow than it would have before this episode when it at least felt like Discovery was trying to attach real stakes and weight and even some level of accountability to Michael’s decisions as captain. (At last!)

The Big Unanswered Questions of Star Trek: Discovery Season 4

Michelle Yeoh as Emperor Georgiou in Star Trek: Discovery Season 3 Episode 3

Star Trek: Michelle Yeoh’s Section 31 Spin-Off is Still Alive

But now—Does anyone really think she’d kill Book to avert a war rather than come up with an insane scheme to stop him that eventually, Rillak will somehow have to dub brilliant? Don’t get me wrong, I don’t want anything to happen to Book (David Ajala remains my Season 4 MVP), but please let there at least be some real consequences attached to whatever Michael’s about to do to save him. Even if those consequences come from Book in some way.

One of the best elements about this episode, though, is the way it calls back, both in setting and tone, to Michael and Book’s first adventures together when she came to the 32nd century . It’s easy to forget that the two of them spent a year together as couriers when Michael thought she’d lost her Starfleet life forever, working with shady types and transporting illicit materials all over the galaxy. The ease with which they slip back into that partnership, from their awkwardly fake banter to the clear hand singles they use with one another, is a strangely welcome and necessary reminder of how good they really are together, something that has been (rightfully I think) overshadowed by Book’s grief over Kwaijon.

Which, of course, comes at the precise moment where their future together seems more clouded and uncertain than ever. As is typical of the mature way Discovery has always written the romance between these two , the ultimate fate of Book and Burnham’s relationship has little  to do with how much they love one another. Instead, it’s about whether they’ll be able to successfully navigate what appear to be rather significant differences in moral philosophy. Book is willing to risk it all to prevent other races from feeling the loss he now struggles with every day and embraces an end justify the means attitude toward protecting those lives.

But Burnham, a child of the Federation through and through, believes that diplomacy, leading with hope, and showing our best face to those that are different from us must be the first path that humanity always tries, even with those who may not deserve that particular bit of grace. How they will find a common ground in the middle of that, when Book’s personal experiences with the DMA and Species 10-C make him especially certain of the rightness of his perspective, is anyone’s guess. Despite Michael’’s clear willingness to fight for Book, here’s certainly more than one moment in “All In” where it seems as though the pair are gambling on more than a card game, but the very future of their relationship and it doesn’t feel like either of them really win. (But props to Burnham for understanding that no matter how much she might have wanted to believe she could change his mind, she still needed to plant that tracking device anyway.)

'Star Trek: Discovery' Season 4, Episode 4 ends with a surprise you won't see coming (recap)

There's a slight "Galileo Seven" vibe about this week's episode, as Tilly gets tough.

Smile, you zooid lifeform. Tilly gets tough in the

"Star Trek: Discovery" constantly comes under discussion and decisions made in the writers' room continue to divide fans, more so — it's safe to say — than any other incarnation of the longest-running science fiction franchise in history. And some on social media claim that "Discovery" isn't true "Trek" (whatever that means). However, I recently had reason to go back and rewatch some of Season 1 and the difference between what we watched back in October 2017 and what we're watching now is stark. Despite the disruption and revolving door of showrunners behind the scenes, from beginning to end, it is more enjoyable than any season of "Discovery" we've seen since.

Once we're past the recap, which makes last week's episode seem much better than it actually was, this week's installment, titled "All Is Possible," opens with a beautiful establishing shot of the Discovery's hull that morphs into the corridor ceiling. It's reminiscent of just one of many gorgeous similar shots used in the first season, in this particular instance, the long-distance zoom-in from the episode "Context is for Kings" (Season 1, Episode 3).

Burnham (Sonequa Martin-Green) provides the narration over a montage of clips showing the crew — particularly Stamets (Anthony Rapp) — still puzzled over the DMA (Dark Matter Anomaly) and Book (David Ajala), who is still suffering from the grief of losing, well, just about everything . Judging from what Burnham says, somewhere between three weeks and a month has passed since the destruction of Kwejian. So he sadly still has a long way to go, which will probably fill this season, as we've mentioned before .

Following Burnham's recap, she is informed by Saru (Doug Jones) that Adm. Vance (Oded Fehr) is sick with a Malindian stomach worm and that President Laira Rillak (Chelah Horsdal) has requested that they replace him in a diplomatic capacity in the negotiations on Ni'var, regarding that planet joining the United Federation of Planets, thus setting up one of the primary storylines for this episode.

Another storyline continues as we see Tilly (Mary Wiseman) have a counseling session with Dr. Culber (Wilson Cruz). She explains that throughout her (still very much fledgling) career, she has been purely focused on getting to the captain's chair, but now she feels like she needs to take a detour. It seems that Dr. Kovich (David Cronenberg) is looking for Discovery volunteers to lead a team-building exercise for Starfleet cadets. However, as a favor, Culber asks if Tilly could request that Adira also join the mission. It's a shame Kovich has transformed from a Master of Spies to Head of the Academy, all his mystery and intrigue suddenly evaporated.

Plus, I still have some issues over the whole Trill story arc this season, topped off by the unnatural transference of consciousness last week. And what's happened to the actual symbiont, Tal, it must be still inside Adira? So, will Adira be able to communicate with past hosts? No mention was made, or advice given regarding these really rather important issues last week. Will they be able to take visible form to Adira following this new precedence set by Alex Kurtzman and Michelle Paradise? This particular subplot has felt contrived and unconvincing from quite early on, so, fingers crossed they'll soon all be given more interesting parts to play in the grand scheme of things.

Kovich briefs Tilly in the docking bay at Starfleet HQ and touches upon an interesting issue, that there is an ongoing concern with Starfleet cadets who do not seem to be working well, in teams, as they haven't met any lifeforms different to their own…because of the burn, no warp drive, exploding dilithium thing. It's explored a tiny bit more as this episode unfolds, but without adequate explanation as to why these new cadets never read books, watched videos or participated in holo-simulations at school on their respective homeworlds, it just ends up being a slapdash, lazy and convenient reason as to why they're all so hostile to each other when the plot requires it a little later on.

All it would've taken is for Kovich, in his incomparable Cronenberg way, to utter a couple of lines in response to Tilly raising this issue, something like, "Holo-simulations, regardless of how realistic they may look, are just not as beneficial to a potential Starfleet officer's training. The best way to learn how to maintain a rational, focused state of mind under extreme circumstances is to actually be in that situation. That hasn't changed in hundreds of years and probably never will." Oh well.

The mission is to fly to Geryon, an M-class desert moon orbiting Theta Helios and carry out a full planetary analysis. Joining Tilly and Adira is Cadet Harral, an Orion (Seamus Patterson), Cadet Val Sasha, a human (Amanda Arcuri) and Cadet Taahz Gorev, a Tellarite (Adrian Walters) plus the shuttle pilot, Lt Callum (Nck Name, yes really ) makes six.

When suddenly, there's a loud bang, the shuttle drops out of warp and the pilot shouts that they've been hit by a rogue gamma-ray burst . Hmmmm. Anyways, the engines are offline and the helm isn't responding so down they go. Roll opening credits.

We head straight back to the downed shuttlecraft after the credits and straight away we see that poor Lt Callum didn't survive the crash. There's a little bit of an "Original Series" "The Galileo Seven" (Season 1, Episode 13) vibe to this story, which is nice. Of course there were only six to begin with and now with Lt Callum down, there's only five, but the constant bickering, plus the threat of being killed and/or eaten in a thoroughly unpleasant fashion by the local wildlife, has a familiar feel to it.

The burst has also knocked out the communications systems, so they take a peek outside and quickly learn that they're not on Geryon, in fact, they're not even close; instead they've crash-landed on Kokytos, an L-class moon, which means it has a breathable atmosphere but is environmentally hostile.

Shock kicks in and the young trainee crew struggle to get to grips with their predicament. Tilly has a handle on it until the cadets start venting anger and frustration toward each other. They have six hours until their scheduled rendezvous with the USS Armstrong, so Tilly insists they start telling each other about themselves and it's a well-written and enjoyable set piece.

We cut to the other major storyline for this episode (a much more sensible number of subplots this week), which are the negotiations on Ni'var between presidents T'Rina of Ni'var (Tara Rosling) and Rillak of the Federation. This is also the first proper look we've had, brief though it may be, of The Planet Formally Known As Vulcan — aside from the Science Institute…er, temple (?) we saw last week — and it has a certain Coruscant look and feel, which works well. (Also, there's a Saurian at the conference and despite his name being in the credits and he was seen in Burnham's voice-over montage at the beginning, it's surely not Lt Junior Grade Linus…unless he's someone's favorite spawn back at Starfleet?)

Apparently, it's taken four months to reach this stage and they are just about to put pen to paper when T'Rina drops a spanner in the works. As a result of the impending doom threatened by the DMA Ni'var wants an unconditional Get Out Clause incorporated into the final agreement. According to T'Rina, the people of Ni'var feel that they stand a better chance of surviving economically without the Federation should the gravitational anomaly threaten the stability of the galaxy. Rillak does not agree and so this sets up a well-written and politically driven sub-plot that is unquestionably a highlight in this week's episode.

Meanwhile, Subplot C concerns Book and he's gone to see Dr. Culber. They talk a little, sharing stories and Book attempts to replicate Kwei'tholum'Kwei, a Kwejian healing ritual. Unfortunately, you not only need sand from the bed of the Mameckx'sha River to do it properly, you must also ask the Tulí Forests for their blessings, not to mention requiring the Great Storms of Naillem'kwai for something equally as impressive-sounding. So, understandably, he gets a little upset and irate as he attempts to create a passable reproduction using programmable matter.

Back on the Ni'var homeworld, the plot thickens a little. Saru and T'Rina bond and form an unlikely friendship, while Rillak and Burnham head off in a different direction to talk things through. This could've unfolded several ways; personally I expected Saru to take one side and Burnham the other, forcing a wedge between these two Starfleet officers. But instead, mercifully, the writers take us in a different direction and not one that's burdened with clichés. Granted this is not a Tom Clancy novel, but the dialogue is good and nothing is forced, effectively making this an enjoyable set piece and consequently the best episode of Season 4 so far.

Both T'Rina and Rillak confide in Saru and Burnham, respectively and then the Discovery captain and her first officer talk to each other. And it turns out…this is precisely why the Federation President arranged everything, including Vance's "illness".

We alternate between the two primary stories, with Book's subplot in support. So next up we check in on our stranded Starfleet cadets who are beginning to fray a little at the edges. Unfortunately though, Helios has 46 moons and without functioning communications, the USS Armstrong is going to have a very difficult time trying to locate them. Added to which, they only have three days of emergency rations. And then they meet this episode's equivalent of the Taurus II anthropoid from "The "Galileo Seven" — a Tuscadian Pyrosome; a colony species made up of thousands of interconnected zooid life-forms. According to Adira, it primarily preys on bioluminescent crustaceans, tracking them via electromagnetic signatures, which happen to be exactly the same signatures produced by their equipment. Uh oh.

It's going to be necessary to leave the safety of the shuttlecraft and venture outside, naturally. Along the way though, Adira very nearly dies and it takes the whole team to rescue her (by pulling them out of a sheet of deadly, killer ice, which I'm pretty sure they then all walk over to reach the ridge). The Starfleet Five make their way to higher ground in order to make contact with the waiting USS Armstrong, but Tilly must act as a distraction to buy the others more time to establish a clear line of communication.

Thankfully, Tilly's "broaden her experiences" subplot has been gently bubbling away now for a few weeks, not like when Cmdr. Nahn was suddenly and unexpectedly thrust forward, front and center, to the primary plot in the Season 3 episode " Die Trying " (Season 3, Episode 5) so it was obvious that she either gets left behind or dies, just like Lt. Cmdr. Airiam in the Season 2 episode " Project Daedalus " (S02, E09). However, Tilly's generous amount of screentime and her solo, action-adventure-style antics in this episode do suggest, without even really trying very hard, that something is going to happen to her.

The Ni'var Negotiation subplot ticks along nicely. It's very dialogue intensive, with long scenes that require solid performances from everyone, not just Sonequa Martin-Green and Doug Jones. Much is learned about everyone's different cultures as Saru and Burnham do exactly what Rillak hoped they would: find a reasonable compromise, enabling a treaty to be signed and Ni'var rejoins the United Federation of Planets.

Tilly gets beamed off Kokytos just in time and everyone makes it out safely, apart from poor Lt Callum of course. Kovich greets Tilly and makes her an offer to teach at the Academy. All the other subplots are wrapped up, including Book's, who finally manages to create a satisfactory Kwei'tholum'Kwei and thus feels like he's accomplished something, along with creating the foundation of a solid friendship with Culber, which he will only benefit from.

Tilly has a heart-to-heart with Burnham in their old shared quarters…where she explains that she's going to take that teaching post at the Academy. And before you can even blink, we see a montage of Tilly saying goodbye to all the primary characters before she boards a shuttlecraft, wheeling her carry-on luggage, neck cushion and so on.

It's…unexpected to say the least. No way is this simply a she'll-be-back-like-normal-next-week thing, the montage of emotional farewells pretty much establishes that. So, what gives? Tilly is a fan favorite, so this is not permanent, we'll wager a pile of gold-pressed latinum on that. Rumors abound that Mary Wiseman left the show to go on maternity leave and while that's possible, these have not been confirmed. No doubt Twitter will be all about this today. But a representative for Paramount+ apparently confirmed to Decider that Wiseman would continue as a series regular in Season 4, so it's more of a "see ya later" than a "goodbye". Decider also interestingly notes that this reflects on recent events, specifically the pandemic and what's been coined The Great Resignation, where many workers in many different fields have used the lockdown and the remote working dilemma as the excuse they've needed to change jobs, even change careers, which is more or less what Tilly has done.

Section 31 ✓

•  The pacing alone in this episode makes it the best in Season 4 so far  •  A potentially dull treaty negotiation set piece becomes very entertaining •  Dr. Culber is a much better ship's counselor than…er, others have been •  A new spin-off show could be Saru and Burnham opening a law practice •  We really hope things develop between Saru and T'Rina wink, wink

Section 8 ✗

•  Not really sure playing if with programmable matter would resolve much •  Kinda obvious something significant was going to happen to Tilly •  Kovich has gone from mysterious spy-type to head of the Academy? •  If Tilly's still going to be a regular, why the emotional goodbye montage? •  Pretty sure everyone walked through that patch of deadly killer ice

Rating: 6.5/10

The first four episodes of Season 4 of "Star Trek: Discovery" are available to watch now and subsequent installments will drop every Thursday on Paramount+ in the US and CTV Sci-Fi or Crave TV in Canada. Countries outside of North America can watch on the Pluto TV Sci-Fi channel.

'Star Trek: Discovery' Embarks on Its Final Mission in New Season 5 Trailer

The fifth and final season hits Paramount+ in April.

The Big Picture

  • The crew of USS Discovery embarks on a final mission for Star Trek: Discovery 's fifth season, hunting for a powerful treasure.
  • Season four saw the crew tackle the Dark Matter Entity, with Book teaming up against them out of vengeance.
  • New enemies and characters, including Captain Rayner, will add to the upcoming adventure launching on April 4, 2024.

The crew of Star Trek: Discovery are off on one last mission in a new trailer for the show's fifth and final season. In the new trailer, USS Discovery captain Michael Burnham ( Sonequa Martin-Green ) gives a wistful voice over about the found family of the Discovery crew as she reassembles it for another mission - including Kelpian alien Saru ( Doug Jones ), cadet turned Starfleet Academy instructor Sylvia Tilly ( Mary Wiseman ), and her own disgraced lover, Cleveland Booker ( David Ajala ). However, there's no time for reminiscences, as the ship is on the hunt for what Starfleet official Kovich ( David Cronenberg ) calls "the greatest treasure in the known galaxy" and what Burnham herself refers to as "one of the greatest powers ever known". And they've got competition for that prize - the new trailer also gives us a glimpse of the new enemies trying to solve the same puzzle, including L'ak ( Elias Toufexis ) and Moll ( Eve Harlow ).

The trailer also checks in with the rest of Discovery 's crew, including science office Paul Stamets ( Anthony Rapp ), Dr. Hugh Culber ( Wilson Cruz ), human Trill symbiont host Adira Tal ( Blu del Barrio ), and engineer Jett Reno ( Tig Notaro ); it also looks to continue the thread of Saru's fledgling romance with Vulcan leader T'Rina ( Tara Rosling ). The trailer also gives us a look at Callum Keith Rennie 's Captain Rayner, a new character for this season. The new season will launch on Paramount+ on April 4, 2024, with a two-episode premiere.

What Happened on Season Four of 'Star Trek: Discovery'?

After adjusting to their jump to the distant 32nd century and solving the mystery of "the Burn", the galaxy-spanning disaster that shattered the Federation, the Discovery crew had another mystery to solve in the show's fourth season; a massive, planet-destroying phenomenon known as the Dark Matter Entity, or DMA. The crew scrambled to locate it before it could do any more damage to the rebuilding Federation, and eventually learned that it was the inadvertent creation of a bizarre, advanced alien race, dubbed Species 10-C . They ended up in opposition to their ally, Book, whose planet was destroyed by the DMA; he teamed up with a sociopathic scientist to destroy it, threatening to sacrifice galactic peace in the name of vengeance. Ultimately, in the season finale , the crew was victorious, making first contact with the DMA's creators. Book, meanwhile, was left to pay reparations for his crimes against the Federation by helping to repair the damage the DMA had wrought.

Star Trek: Discovery is produced by CBS Studios in association with Secret Hideout and Roddenberry Entertainment. Alex Kurtzman , Michelle Paradise , Heather Kadin , Aaron Baiers , Olatunde Osunsanmi , Martin-Green, Frank Siracusa , John Weber , Rod Roddenberry and Trevor Roth executive produce the series. Kurtzman and Paradise serve as co-showrunners.

Star Trek: Discovery 's fifth season will debut on Paramount+ on April 4, 2024 , with a two-episode premiere. Stay tuned to Collider for future updates, and watch the new trailer below.

Star Trek: Discovery 's Crew Preps for Their Last Dance in New Season 5 Trailer

The star trek series starring sonequa martin-green as captain michael burnham returns for its final season april 4 on paramount+..

Cast of Star Trek: Discovery

As the countdown to Star Trek: Discovery ’s final season continues—the season five premiere is April 4 on Paramount+—we have our latest peek at how the story will wrap up . From the looks of it, and perhaps unsurprisingly, “farewells” will be among the themes foregrounded in the story.

“It has been a hell of a journey, but everything ends someday,” Captain Michael Burnham (Sonequa Martin-Green) says as the trailer begins, seemingly addressing not just whoever in Discovery ’s cast that’s sharing the scene with her... but the fans too. “Last dance,” she later says wistfully to Commander Saru (Doug Jones), who replies he’s ready to follow her lead.

We knew that season five would see Discovery ’s crew seeking “an ancient power whose very existence has been deliberately hidden for centuries,” and now we have a bigger idea of what that will involve: “the greatest treasure in the galaxy,” a whole lot of danger, and a mystery quest involving clandestine clues, plentiful space battles, and strange new planets. We’ll be sorry to see this chapter of Starfleet history close, but we’re absolutely looking forward to the ride.

Along with Martin-Green and Jones, Star Trek: Discovery stars Anthony Rapp, Mary Wiseman, Wilson Cruz, David Ajala, Blu del Barrio, and Callum Keith Rennie. The final season arrives April 4 on Paramount+ .

Update: This post has been updated with the YouTube version of the trailer.

'Bitter and Sweet': Star Trek: Discovery Star Reveals Reaction to Series Cancelation

Sonequa Martin-Green revealed her emotional reaction to the surprising cancelation of Star Trek: Discovery.

The Star Trek franchise is bidding farewell to Star Trek: Discovery as it wraps up with season 5. Sonequa Martin-Green, who portrays the lead role of Michael Burnham, captain of the Discovery, shared her reaction to the news.

The premiere of Star Trek: Discovery in 2017 sparked a resurgence in the Trek franchise, paving the way for subsequent series like Star Trek: Picard , Strange New Worlds , Lower Decks , and Prodigy . The cast was unaware during the initial filming that season 5 would signify the conclusion of their interstellar adventure. Martin-Green described the news as stirring up a "kaleidoscope of emotions,” in an interview with Entertainment Weekly .

"My reaction when I heard Star Trek was ending — well, Star Trek: Discovery ...man, it was a kaleidoscope of emotions. There was definitely the bittersweetness, but then there was this really powerful sense of peace as well because of what we did, what we created, and what we were all able to be a part of. So, yeah, bitter and sweet, but peaceful at the same time."

However, reports suggest that the decision to end the series is primarily influenced by the broader dynamics of the streaming industry and the evolving marketplace landscape .
