Architects are a British metalcore band from Brighton, England. The band currently consists of lead vocalist Sam Carter, drummer Dan Searle, guitarist Josh Middleton and Alex Dean on bass guitar.

All of the original members of Architects were intently involved with the Brighton music scene due them all growing up in the surrounding areas. They cross several genres with their technical music, the primary influences have been noted as ranging through artists from hardcore punk and heavy metal music with Meshuggah, Converge, The Dillinger Escape Plan, Gojira and Thrice all noted as influencers. Sam Carter who was a drummer and studied drums at the Brighton Institute of Modern Music before joining Architects, had performed in multiple local bands, one of which had the opportunity of supporting Enter Shikari. Architects was born in 2004 when Drummer Dan Searle and his twin brother Guitarist Tom Searle began the project under the name Counting Days, until the addition of Matt Johnson, guitarist Tim Hillier-Brook and Tim Lucas on bass guitar continued as Architects.

After the release of their debut album Nightmares in May of 2006, the band were offered the opportunity to tour with several prolific artists including Beecher and Bring Me The Horizon, yet due to the age of the members at the time they had to book several weeks off college in order to continue their touring schedule. After their first album, Architects sound was forced to change dramatically due to the departure of lead vocalist Matt Johnson He was replaced by local musician Sam Carter who had been described by Searle as an 'easy choice'. After their next album 'Ruin' which took them on large headline tours in both the UK and the US they revealed they had been signed to Century Media Records for a three album deal. The first release was 'Hollow Crown' which made the first dent on the UK charts, placing it at #117 and was promoted with the band completing a 19 date headline tour of the United Kingdom before supporting Parkway Drive in Australia.

Their next album 'The Here and Now' was released in 2010 and saw the band's sound following a more commercial direction, with sales figures reflecting this as they charted at #57 in the UK, a substantial gain compared to its predecessor. Critics enjoyed the album, but fans were not impressed with the departure from the heavier, more technical sound they had first been attracted to. They slowly began to remedy this with their next releases, returning to the music they were first inspired to make, the outcomes were greatly rewarded as the 2014 release 'Lost Forever//Lost Together' saw them crack the top 20 of the UK and Australian album charts whilst making their first dent on the US billboard.

Live reviews

Architects are easily one of my Top 5 favourite bands of all time. I feel they have a particular connection with their audience that many other heavy bands lack. I've seen them a few times throughout their career and as much as I love them I would have to say that the intimacy with the fan base feels like it has withered somewhat. This may not exactly be the reality as I could just be me getting older and not really connecting with live environments as I used to. This was definitely one of the main issues with the concert as a lot of people saw it as an opportunity to get blind drunk and consistently bump into people (nowhere near the mosh pit) with no concern for other people. As hard as this band played the atmosphere can be dictated by those around you, and on this occasion it was.

As far as the support acts, they were not to my liking. They came across as a parody of my teen years rolled into a Kevin & Perry like homage. One comment from a band seemed really at odds with the crowd, when saying "we welcome all people of all types" when the crowd was one of the least diverse places I've been in recent memory.

Architects played their new material strongly. I was a bit put off by how dominant the snare drum was over the mix, and the guitars seemed to blur a lot of the time into a wall of sound (sometimes losing Adam almost entirely). I was amazing at the strength of Sam's vocals and how he's able to main that throughout. Also, Dan's power really stood out to me; incredibly compelling.

Overall, I think I find myself wondering if I'm a Roger Murtaugh in all of this. I may be a little too old for this shit. I'll definitely buy their records, but I'm not sure this live environment is entirely for me.

PS: is Sea Shepherd seen as a fashion now? I get that Sam is a spokesperson for them but when I see people wearing their gear and drinking from these plastic cups and throwing them about without a care in the world, it makes me wonder if anyone really has absorbed their message. Also, I think I saw a total of 2 people talk to Sea Shepherd.

PPS: am I the only one who finds it totally unnecessary to say "fuck" every other word in a sentence? I get that someone can be hyped, but it gets a little funny after a while.

PPPS: Can someone with epilepsy ever see Architects live? I don't think I saw a warning for the amount of strobes, which at times was blinding.

Signing off - a miserable sod.

The service was pretty good and we entered pretty easily. Vega is a small place, but it's allright. The warmup band was Polaris, and although their music was okay, they did to mamy things with the crows. 1 wall pit, 2 circle pits within the first 20 minutes. I stood next to a dude that started jumping so much that I spilled my beer. The next time he did it, I "accidentally" spilled my bear onto his shoes. The next band was beartooth, by far my favorite of the three, they asked people to jump, but not move to much. The singing was great and the crowd was feeling it. A good experience in my opinion. Then achitects came, and while some warmup music played, I started getting scared, the crowed moved and jumped the chop suey, that they were playing while setting up. A guy jumped so much that I had to push him back to his place. So I grabbed my girlfriends hand and we went up to the balcony. Best decision yet. When they got on stage people got wild, not like wild for the music. No, they made pits and ran around, crowd surfing and taking of clothes. Honestly, I think they came for the pit more than the band. I'm only familiar with one of architects songs, and you know it's bad when I thought they were playing the song I like, only to find out that all their songs sound fucking simular. It became more entertaining to look at the people falling down from crowd surfing and pushing each other, than the band. At last we went out a couple hours before, we bought a beartooth t-shirt on the way out. We also met the kind people that we stood next to, and they had to leave because of a wrist and a back injury. On top of that, they said that they kept getting a shoe in their head from people crowd surfing. From the resturant across we could see an ambulance, but that doesn't really surprise me. Overall I'd say the beartooth part was good, but the rest was chaotic and at times brutal.

Describing their music as unreal, the band Architects have conquered the world gaining adoring fans as they bring their metal to the core. Originating from Brighton, the band released their debut album 'Nightmares' which enabled them to secure a support slot for Prog Metal band SikTh. After the departure of their originally vocalist, Sam Carter joined the line-up in 2007 solidifying and defining the unique sound we would come to recognise as Architects. In 2008 they signed with the independent label Century Media Records and took part in the renowned Never Say Die! Tour in Europe alongside Parkway Drive and Protest The Hero.

In 2009 they released their pivotal album, 'Hollow Crown' demonstrating the band stylistic progression featuring anthems such as the title track “Hollow Crown” and “Follow the Water.” Experimenting further with their later releases 'Daybreaker' and 'Lost Forever // Lost Together' allowed Architects to incorporate a more melodic approach and brave politically driven subjects.

It’s no surprise that Architects are able to put on an incredible live show. With the ‘A’ from the “Hollow Crown” album cover is a prominent feature on their backdrop. As soon as Sam Carter hits the stage, energy levels are already at 110% as he paces up and down performing directly to not only those at those pressed against the barrier adorning Architects merchandise but to the whole room. With strobes at full blast, the crowd can’t help but jump in perfect unison, some even taking the opportunity to crowdsurf to the front of the stage.

If you thought you came for a sit down show, you’re sadly mistaken.

For some reason, Architects has me coming back to see them if they're even remotely in my area. This was the 5th time I've seen them live, and let me tell you, it just gets better and better every time. The vocals are usually something that (for some reason) isn't loud enough usually; but hey, maybe I've just been standing in the wrong part 5 times (: Other than that, expect an upbeat crowd that's filled with people that truly enjoy melodic hardcore. The riffs and the drums are just the beginning of the beauty of seeing Architects live, as Sam is ALWAYS super energetic during every single lyric he sings. This was the first Canadian show on their 'Lost Forever // Lost Together' tour, debut-ing their album. They continued to play a good, even, mix of songs from Hollow Crown and Daybreaker.

One thing I look forward to when going to a concert of this genre is being able to yell the lyrics at the lead as loud as I can, because I know that they mean something to everyone there; it brings a sense of community right in that venue. Architects values that greatly, and have continued to show that at every show played.

The Rio Theatre was an.. interesting choice of venue for.. well, any concert really, but Architects made it work by owning the 5"0 stage and making their sound echo throughout the whole venue. With such outstanding and catchy riffs, Architects will always be a band to go see.

There are plenty of bands who started off with a heavy sound - perhaps they were metalcore, or screamo - who ultimately ended up with a musical identity so watered down that it’d be difficult to argue that they were actually anything more than glorified boy bands, aimed at the disaffected rather than the typical One Direction fan. You Me at Six and We Are the Ocean are both good examples of that particular phenomenon, so fair play to Architects for managing to bring a metalcore sound forwards, in crisp, polished fashion, without actually conceding creative control or changing their image for the sake of commercial viability. The Brighton outfit, at ten years into their careers, have long had a cult fanbase, but it was one they managed to expand considerably with the release of The Here and Now in 2011, which leant towards more of a post-hardcore sound than before. Since then, they’ve continued to go from strength to strength, despite the departure of Tim Hillier-Brook on guitar; their most recent record, this March’s Lost Forever // Lost Together, went in at number fourteen on the UK charts, and saw them play to the biggest crowds of their career so far on a five-date UK tour. They’ll bring their incendiary live show to Reading and Leeds next month, second from top at The Pit - on this form, they’re not to be missed.

First of all it was an awesome choice of supporting bands. Polaris is a band I love listening to for a year now and Beartooth always surprises with catchy refrains and great breakdowns.

In my opinion Architects is one of the greatest live bands i have ever seen. They truly show what they're able to do, play as if it was playback because of the pure sound they bring along quite directly from their albums and catch you in an emotional way not many would think is possible. It was an absolutely amazing evening.

The only thing i realized over the past few months/years is that the "Gasometer" in Vienna can't quite convince me with the sound in the arena. It's always very echo-y and fuzzy. Not quite my favourite place to go to concerts to.

At last i would like to thank Songkick for making it possible for me to always keep track of the concerts in my area.

TERRIBLE! Strictly because of the security staff they are terrible I go there to mosh pit and have a sick time and mosh to my favorite bands and these guys at the front lines in front of the stage at telling me I can't concert because I crab serve four times in a row within 15 minutes so basically I'm just done Crown surfing in the start of the night if they're going to kick me out the stuff there are a goddamn joke basically almost ruin my night terrible I paid my money to go there and do my thing like lots of other guys do and telling me I can't concert that's half of fun when I go to my concerts just simply terrible to me it's not fair it's a bit of a joke they should do something else if they can't handle it in front of the stage

The show was amazing, Architects were strong and offered one of the best shows recently.

But the location, Tonhalle in Munich... i would not recommend it in any way. They have a problem with the air circulation or something. In less than 1h you couldn’t breath, everything was wet, the floor, the walls, water dripping from the ceiling, literally no air circulation whatsoever. Luckily this didn’t affect the show, because the guys are true to their fans and committed to hold a great show. But man.. I’ve never been to such a concert in such conditions...

Holy Hell! That concert was phenomenal, I've seen Architects for the second time now and I completely forgot just how good Sam Carter's voice is, his projection is unlike anything else, now while I did not come souly for the Architects, While She Sleeps & Thy Art Is Murder were f***ing bone shatteringly good, I've never seen a more hardcore set like Thy Art Is Murder. Lawrence Taylor & While She Sleeps hit every string right, after that concert last night my entire body aches from so much moshing, Metal for life!

Architects had a very high energy show, but it was distracting how much smoke and lights they had as part of that show. I could not see dan (drummer) most of the time and the guitars were often overshadowed visiuallt by the intense strobes being used so you could not see them much of the time, either. It made for a dazzling show, but not if you like watching the artists. Other than that, there were plenty of sing along parts and the different instruments and voice were well mixed.

Architects Cancel Rescheduled 2022 North American Tour

Architects had been planning to return to the concert stage in the U.S. next month, but according to a new statement from the band, that's not going to happen. The band cited "logistical issues" as the reasoning for the cancellation.

The group was set to perform with We Came as Romans and Like Moths to Flames on the run, that was set to launch on Sept. 6 in Minneapolis. This actually was a rescheduled run that had been pushed back due to the pandemic when Polyphia and Loathe were set to support the band in the fall of 2021. The shows were in support of the band's standout 2021 release, For Those That Wish to Exist .

In their statement, the band writes, "It pains us to announce that despite the best efforts of everyone in our band, our crew and the rest of the team, a number of logistical issues have forced us to cancel our upcoming North American tour. We had been looking forward to playing so many new songs for you, but everything from transportation to visa approval timelines and other hurdles have made the trip impossible at this stage."

They continue, "We recognize the last few years have been a challenging time for everyone and we were really excited to perform for you and share moments together that only live music can facilitate. We will announce new plans to return as soon as we can. The last thing we want to do is announce new dates that we will be unable to uphold. Thank you for your understanding. We will be back. In the meantime, refunds for tickets & VIP will be made automatically to the method of payment used to purchase."

Meanwhile, We Came as Romans also addressed their fans, but it appears as though they have something else in the works following the cancellation news. "We're extremely saddened to share the cancellation of the For Those That Wish to Exist U.S. Tour," wrote the band. "Architects are facing logistical issues that prevent this tour from happening. However, we've got some exciting news to share with you soon. We can't wait."

Though the tour was tied to the For Those That Wish to Exist album, fans of Architects know the group has been working on new music. Just last month they issued a new song called " Tear Gas " with the reveal that a new album titled The Classic Symptoms of a Broken Spirit would be coming on Oct. 21 via Epitaph Records.

Stay tuned to see what adjustments all three bands make to their 2022 scheduling with the tour now off.

On ‘Deeper Well,’ Kacey Musgraves Is Closer to Fine

The country singer and songwriter’s fifth album of original songs is a study in quiet thoughtfulness rooted in gratitude.

A woman with her brown hair in two braids is dressed in white and laying in tall grass, both hands resting behind her head.

By Jon Pareles

Contentment makes for tricky songwriting territory. Songs thrive more often on extremes: desire, heartache, rage, despair, striving, longing, ecstasy. But Kacey Musgraves has now made two superb albums suffused with satisfaction: “Golden Hour” from 2018, which won the Grammy for album of the year, and her new one out Friday, “Deeper Well.”

On “Golden Hour,” Musgraves sang about the gratification and relief of blissful romance in songs like “Butterflies.” With “Deeper Well” — which follows her divorce album, “Star-Crossed” — Musgraves finds more comfort in a wistful self-sufficiency. She savors small pleasures, personal connections and casual revelations, with a touch of new-age mysticism.

In the album’s title song , Musgraves calmly notes how she’s setting aside youthful misjudgments. She’s moving away from people with “dark energy” and no longer getting high every morning (though her Instagram account is still @spaceykacey). At 35, she’s glad to be more mature. “It’s natural when things lose their shine,” she sings, “so other things can glow.”

Musgraves grew up in a small East Texas town and she’s nominally a country singer. Her 2013 debut, “Same Trailer Different Park,” won a Grammy as best country album, as did “Golden Hour,” and she has won multiple Grammys for best country song.

But while mainstream country has leaned into booze, trucks and arena-scale bombast, Musgraves prefers delicacy, detail and wryly upending small-town expectations. The title song of her second album, “Pageant Material,” explained: “It ain’t that I don’t care about world peace/But I don’t see how I can fix it in a swimsuit on a stage.”

Her music prizes understatement, bypassing standard Nashville sounds and often harking back to 1970s Laurel Canyon folk-pop. Like that era’s songwriters and producers, Musgraves is steeped in folk music and seemingly diaristic, but also unassumingly savvy about pop structures and studio possibilities.

On “Star-Crossed,” Musgraves sang about marital pressures , professional jealousy, coping with memories and moving on. The music pushed well beyond country, incorporating surreal electronics and sultry R&B. “Deeper Well” is leaner and less determinedly eclectic. Written and produced with Musgraves’s longtime collaborators, Daniel Tashian and Ian Fitchuk, the album spotlights acoustic guitars and organic, seemingly transparent arrangements; every instrument sparkles. While the album was recorded in New York City (at Electric Lady Studios), it’s a world away from urban hubbub; the music always feels pastoral.

Gratitude is at the core of the new songs. Musgraves may be contented, but she’s not complacent. She finds omens in nature in “Cardinal,” the album’s opener, which harks back to the modal folk-rock of the Byrds, complete with 12-string guitar. Seeing a cardinal after the death of a friend, she asks, “Are you bringing me a message from the other side?”

In “Dinner With Friends,” she lists small things that please her — “the way that the sun on my floor makes a pattern of light” — and plants a political barb, appreciating, “My home state of Texas/The sky there, the horses and dogs,” before adding, “But none of their laws.” And in “The Architect,” a crystalline string-band waltz, she marvels at both natural phenomena — an apple, the Grand Canyon — and the miracle of finding a new love, making her ponder the existence of a God: “This life that we make, is it random or fate?” she asks. “Is there an architect?”

“Deeper Well” is committed to understatement. It rarely flaunts its 21st-century sonic resources, and when it does, it stays humble about them. In “Sway,” Musgraves wishes for resiliency and a respite from anxiety — “Like a palm tree in the wind/I won’t break, I’ll just bend” — over a gently tapped beat and subdued acoustic guitar picking.

But the track’s last 30 seconds flaunt technology with multiple a cappella Musgraves vocals: low, high, reverberating, sustained, wordless or intoning “I’ll sway.” It sounds reverent and meditative, computerized yet still human, revealing — only by contrast — how carefully restrained the album is. Modesty is an underrated virtue, but “Deeper Well” cherishes it.

Karl Wallinger of World Party in 2006 at the during Bonnaroo festival in Tennessee, United States.

Karl Wallinger obituary

Singer-songwriter who played with the Waterboys, created the band World Party and wrote the Robbie Williams hit She’s the One

Karl Wallinger, who has died aged 66, was a multi-instrumentalist and singer-songwriter who became successful in the 1980s and 90s on both sides of the Atlantic with World Party , a band that consisted of “me and whoever is playing with me at any given time”.

Often working alone in the studio, Wallinger recorded and produced the bulk of his albums by himself, playing an array of instruments that included keyboards, guitar and bass, while defying the musical fashions of the time with songs that matched thoughtful, contemporary and witty lyrics with unashamed musical references to the Beatles and a number of his other 60s and 70s heroes. A cover version of Wallinger’s song She’s the One was released by Robbie Williams in 1999 and became a No 1 hit single in the UK.

A classical musician as a child, Wallinger had switched direction after deciding “I don’t want to teach oboe, I don’t want to form my own wind quartet – I want to rock!” His first success came when he joined Mike Scott’s folk-rock band the Waterboys in 1983. Intrigued by hearing Scott talk about Patti Smith , Van Morrison and Lou Reed , he answered an advert in which Scott had said he was looking for a guitarist – and persuaded him that he needed a keyboard player instead.

Over the next two years Wallinger helped to shape the band’s rock-orientated “big music” phase, playing on their second and third albums, A Pagan Place (1984) and This Is the Sea (1985). The latter included the Waterboys’ best-known song, The Whole of the Moon , which was written by Scott. It reached No 26 in the UK singles chart in 1985 and then No 3 when it was re-released in 1991.

During the Waterboys’ rise to fame, Wallinger had also been writing his own songs, which he recorded in his London flat. Deciding to concentrate on his own music, he quit the band in 1985 and moved to Woburn in the Bedfordshire countryside to record in a home studio.

Now working as World Party, he released his first album, Private Revolution, in 1987. It included the angry, apocalyptic rocker Ship of Fools , which was a minor hit in Britain and became popular on American radio.

After moving to a 32-track London studio known as Seaview Cottage, he recorded his second World Party album, the Grammy-nominated Goodbye Jumbo (1990), which matched rousing rock ballads with environmental concerns. On the cover he was dressed in giant elephant ears and a gas mask, an image explained by Is It Too Late , in which he dreams of an elephant graveyard in an African plain “wondering why there was no more rain”.

There was a further mix of rousing rock melody and thoughtful lyrics (“the world says … give a little bit of your love to me”) on the 1990 single Put the Message in the Box . Again, Wallinger played almost all the instruments himself, though with other musicians adding occasional percussion or slide guitar and Sinéad O’Connor singing backing vocals on Sweet Soul Dream . Wallinger had played on her debut album, The Lion and the Cobra, three years earlier.

For Bang! (1993) World Party became a three-person group, with Wallinger joined by David Catlin-Birch on guitar and Chris Sharrock on drums. This proved to be the band’s best-selling album in the UK, reaching No 2 in the album charts, while the single Is It Like Today? was a Top 40 hit in the US, where the band toured, supporting 10,000 Maniacs. The follow-up, Egyptology (1997), was less successful, despite including Wallinger’s original version of She’s the One , while a fifth album, Dumbing Up (2000) failed to reach the UK’s Top 50.

With World Party’s fortunes apparently on the wane, Wallinger was faced with a more serious setback. In 2001 he suffered from a brain aneurism, from which it took five years to recover. This could have presented serious financial problems for him and his family, but he was saved by Williams’ hit recording of She’s the One.

By 2006 Wallinger was ready to re-start his musical career, but it would be another six years before he gave his first major British concert, at the Royal Albert Hall in London. That gig coincided with the release of Arkeology, a five-CD compilation that included rarities and covers of Beatles songs.

Born in Prestatyn in north Wales, Wallinger was one of the six children of Julian, an architect, and his wife, Phyllis (nee Owens). Obsessed with music – especially the Beatles – from a young age, he tried to vocally recreate all the sounds he heard on the album Sergeant Pepper . He started piano lessons at the age of nine and the following year began studying the oboe.

His skill won him a music scholarship to Charterhouse school in Surrey, after which he worked in music publishing and then was briefly the musical director of the Rocky Horror Show. Later he played with a series of bands before joining the Waterboys after meeting Scott, who described him as “one of the finest musicians I have ever known”.

He is survived by his wife, Suzie Zamit, their son, Louis, daughter, Nancy, and two grandchildren.

Watch Kacey Musgraves Perform Acoustic Number ‘The Architect' on ‘Fallon'

Kacey Musgraves appeared on The Tonight Show to perform her recent song "The Architect" and to chat with host Jimmy Fallon about her new LP, Deeper Well . Musgraves took the stage with her band in old timey garb for an emotional performance of the album cut.

Musgraves sat down with Fallon to chat about her recent Grammy win, Deeper Well , and kicking off her world tour in Ireland.

"Releasing a creative project, I don't know if you feel this way, it's such a process of letting go," Musgraves told Fallon of releasing her album. "These songs were written from a very intimate, personal place and then you release them and they kind of become everyone else's that they attach their own meanings and stuff to. So it's bittersweet in a way because I feel like once you release it it's not yours anymore. It's others."

She added, "It's like summer camp when you're making a record. You're with your friends and you're hanging out. This was like a year and a half or so in the making."

Deeper Well is out today. The 14-track LP,  recorded at  New York's storied Electric Lady Studios, is "a collection songs I hold very dear to my heart," Musgraves wrote in an Instagram post last month announcing her latest work. Musgraves recently appeared on Saturday Night Live to perform two songs from Deeper Well , singles "Deeper Well" and "Too Good to be True."

The Texas native's  tour for   Deeper Well  kicks off in Europe in April, with U.S. appearances beginning in September. The tour includes 44 stops across Europe and North America, opening in Dublin on April 28. It will wrap on Dec. 7 with a final show in Nashville. Musgraves will be joined on select dates by Madi Diaz in Europe, Father John Misty in North America from September through October, and Lord Huron from November through December. Nickel Creek will support across all North American dates. Tickets are on sale now via the  official Kacey Musgraves website.

Moscow Metro

The Moscow Metro Tour is included in most guided tours’ itineraries. Opened in 1935, under Stalin’s regime, the metro was not only meant to solve transport problems, but also was hailed as “a people’s palace”. Every station you will see during your Moscow metro tour looks like a palace room. There are bright paintings, mosaics, stained glass, bronze statues… Our Moscow metro tour includes the most impressive stations best architects and designers worked at - Ploshchad Revolutsii, Mayakovskaya, Komsomolskaya, Kievskaya, Novoslobodskaya and some others.

What is the kremlin in russia?

The guide will not only help you navigate the metro, but will also provide you with fascinating background tales for the images you see and a history of each station.

And there some stories to be told during the Moscow metro tour! The deepest station - Park Pobedy - is 84 metres under the ground with the world longest escalator of 140 meters. Parts of the so-called Metro-2, a secret strategic system of underground tunnels, was used for its construction.

During the Second World War the metro itself became a strategic asset: it was turned into the city's biggest bomb-shelter and one of the stations even became a library. 217 children were born here in 1941-1942! The metro is the most effective means of transport in the capital.

There are almost 200 stations 196 at the moment and trains run every 90 seconds! The guide of your Moscow metro tour can explain to you how to buy tickets and find your way if you plan to get around by yourself.

Moscow metro tour: architectural styles of the subway.

the architects band tour

Duration: 2 hours

Categories: Culture & History, Sightseeing

This metro tour of Russia’s capital and most populous city, Moscow, is your chance to get a unique insight into the beautiful and impressive architecture of the city's underground stations. Admire their marble walls and high ceilings representing Stalin's desire for glory after World War 2, and see first-hand how the interiors change with the rise of new political eras. Your guide will lead you through the complex network, which is one of the most heavily used rapid transit systems worldwide, with over two billion travelers in 2011.

Opened in 1935, Moscow’s underground system, now 190 miles (305 km) long with 185 stations, is today one the largest and most heavily used rapid transit systems in the world. On this Moscow metro tour, discover the impressive architecture of Moscow’s underground stations and learn how they reflect the Soviet era.

Getting around by metro, your local guide will take you through parts of Moscow’s infamous history. Stop at stations built during the time of the USSR (Soviet Union) that are praised as one of the most extravagant architectural projects from Stalin’s time. After World War 2, he was keen on establishing Stalinist architecture to represent his rising regime and a recognized empire. Learn how when his successor started the de-Stalinization of the former Soviet Union in 1953, the extravagancy of the architecture was toned down.

Discover how the unique character of each station reflected several different eras. While stations like Kievskaya and Slavyansky Bulvar have pompous halls and high stucco ceilings brimming with extravagant decorations, those built later, like Volzhskaya, are lightly adorned with sparse furnishings. Architect Alexey Dushkin and painter Alexander Deyneka were just two of the many artists who made these magnificent landmarks possible.

Revel in Moscow's glory days, as well as the years of scarcity, on this fascinating Moscow metro experience. Conclude your tour at one of the central stations in Moscow. If you're lucky, you may even find the secret entrance to the unconfirmed Metro-2, a parallel underground system used by the government -- a mystery which has neither been denied nor confirmed today.

What the 'mission from God' really was for 'The Blues Brothers' movie

the architects band tour

The following is adapted from “ The Blues Brothers: An Epic Friendship, the Rise of Improv, and the Making of an American Film Classic ,” published March 19 by Atlantic Monthly Pres s. The author is Daniel de Visé , a personal finance reporter for USA TODAY.

Even casual fans of “ The Blues Brothers ” know the scene.

A patrolman pulls over Jake and Elwood Blues in their Bluesmobile. The officer keys in the tag number and divines that Elwood’s license is suspended for 56 moving violations and 116 parking tickets. The patrolman orders the boys out of the car. Instead, Elwood speeds off.

“They’re not gonna catch us,” he tells Jake. “We’re on a mission from God.”

The first half of that line came from Dan Aykroyd ’s original script for “The Blues Brothers,” a 324-page tome that he delivered to producers wrapped in the cover of an L.A. telephone book.

Check out: USA TODAY's weekly Best-selling Booklist

The second half came from John Landis , the director. He added it in a winking nod to Aykroyd, whose passion for rhythm and blues had inspired the film’s true mission.

In search of the true 'mission from God'

I grew up with “The Blues Brothers,” saw the film a dozen times and thought I knew it pretty well. Yet, I had never heard the story of the real mission from God. Landis told it to me in a 2020 interview. It inspired me to write a book about “The Blues Brothers.”

In the final script, and in the Blues Brothers film, the “mission from God” refers to the goofy central plot. Jake and Elwood Blues set out to raise $5,000 to pay a delinquent tax bill for the Catholic orphanage that reared them.

Catholic orphanages don’t pay taxes. Then again, quite a lot in “The Blues Brothers” defied logic. The Bluesmobile defied physics. And, hey, this was comedy.

The real mission from God was something entirely different.

Landis added the line to the script to honor Aykroyd’s quest to revive the careers of the faded icons of rhythm and blues.

At the close of the 1970s, the titans of classic R&B were struggling. Disco ruled the charts. Arena rock ruled the amphitheaters. Aretha Franklin’s 1979 album “La Diva” stalled at 146 on the Billboard 200 album chart. James Brown’s “The Original Disco Man” reached 152.

Aykroyd had grown up in Ottawa, the Canadian capital, a worshipful acolyte of rhythm and blues. He had seen Sam & Dave perform in Montreal at the 1967 World’s Fair.

In 1975, Aykroyd joined the founding cast of “Saturday Night,” later renamed “Saturday Night Live.” He became best friends with John Belushi, a fellow comedian and musician from suburban Chicago. Together, they worked up a blues act.

The Blues Brothers debuted on “Saturday Night Live” in April 1978. The act evoked the great blues duos of the 1960s, most notably Sam & Dave, who had scored monster hits with “Soul Man” and “Hold On, I’m Comin.’” Black suits and hats linked the white bluesmen with the R&B greats of old, men like Cab Calloway and John Lee Hooker and B.B. King, impeccably dressed.

Over the summer of 1978, Aykroyd and Belushi built the Blues Brothers into a top-drawer R&B touring act, playing songs by Willie Mabon and Big Joe Turner and fronting an all-star band, featuring guitar legends Matt “Guitar” Murphy and Steve “The Colonel” Cropper.

A Blues Brothers film would capitalize on the success of the band, whose debut album topped the Billboard charts, and on the budding superstardom of Belushi, who had broken out with a performance in the 1978 comedy film “Animal House,” playing Bluto, a volcanic blend of Harpo Marx and Cookie Monster.

Dan Aykroyd and John Landis shaped 'The Blues Brothers' into an action-comedy musical

Together, scriptwriters Aykroyd and Landis shaped the film into an action-comedy musical.

They recruited Cab Calloway, the swing-era big-band great, to play Curtis, elegant mentor to Elwood and Jake.

For an outdoor sequence on Chicago’s famed Maxwell Street, they hired John Lee Hooker, the urban blues legend.

They enlisted Aretha Franklin, Queen of Soul, to play Matt “Guitar” Murphy’s long-suffering wife.

Ray Charles, the Genius, signed on to play the pawnshop dealer who sells the Blues Brothers their gear.

They tapped James Brown, Godfather of Soul, to play the singing preacher whose sermon inspires Jake’s religious epiphany: Get the band back together.

Had filmmakers gotten their way, “The Blues Brothers” would have featured even more of the greats. Aykroyd and Landis approached B.B. King, King of the Blues; Little Richard, an architect of rock and roll; and Muddy Waters, Chicago’s greatest bluesman.

King’s manager waved them off: Unlike most of the others, B.B. was booked. Little Richard was too busy pursuing his own mission from God. Muddy Waters signed on, but he fell ill on the eve of filming. The production could not wait.

Aretha Franklin, James Brown and other R&B greats transformed 'The Blues Brothers'

The musical numbers transformed “The Blues Brothers” from a very funny film into a cinema treasure.

In 2010, the Catholic Church would declare the film a “Catholic classic,” one of a dozen films recommended for viewing by the flock, a list that included “The Ten Commandments” and “It’s a Wonderful Life.” A mission from God, indeed.

In 2020, the Library of Congress would induct “The Blues Brothers” into its National Film Registry, marked for preservation.

“The Blues Brothers” would become one of the first big Hollywood films to earn more overseas ($58 million) than in the United States ($57 million), a success fed by the universal appeal of American rhythm and blues.

Despite all those accolades, however, the question of race complicates the Blues Brothers legend.

The Blues Brothers band was two white guys fronting a mostly white ensemble that played historically Black music.

Even before the film, some critics greeted the Blues Brothers as an act of cultural appropriation. In a 1979 issue of "Rolling Stone," Dave Marsh theorized that the presence of Cropper and Donald "Duck" Dunn, the white Stax masters, was “the only thing keeping the Blues Brothers from slopping over into racist parody.”

That critique resurfaced with the release of the film in June 1980.

“Belushi and Aykroyd doubtless intended to pay homage to the great Black performers who have inspired them,” David Denby wrote in "New York," “but the homage often comes close to insult and outright rip-off.”

Yet, the performers themselves seemed to disagree.

“As far as commercial interest in R&B is concerned, John helped get the ball rolling again,” Ray Charles told "Rolling Stone," speaking of Belushi. “Man, we owe him.”

“The film was made with a lot of love and gave us all another chance,” James Brown told "People." “I hate to admit it, but these young people never heard of me. They come to the movies and see James Brown and Aretha Franklin. If they like us, maybe they’ll come hear us play.”

Mission from God, accomplished

They did. The Godfather went from half-empty rooms to packed houses. Franklin reaped a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. In December 1980, “Saturday Night Live” featured musical performances by Aretha Franklin and James Brown on consecutive weeks. Neither artist had done the show before, and both were riding high.

I am pretty sure that I first saw “The Blues Brothers” at the Parkway theater on Clark Street in Chicago, one of those places where you could watch a double feature for a dollar or two, probably around 1982.

I could have walked over to Rose Records the very next day and bought a copy of a Blues Brothers album. But I didn’t. I bought a copy of “The Best of Sam & Dave,” a vinyl version of the cassette Elwood and Jake had played in the Bluesmobile. I think that’s what the Brothers would have wanted.
