How I Picked The Destinations

To ensure I provided accurate and valuable information to my readers, I adopted a meticulous approach.

I made it a point to engage with locals whenever possible.

Their insights and recommendations often uncovered hidden gems that might not have been as well-known.

Additionally, I conducted extensive online research, from browsing travel forums to studying local attractions and amenities.

Our Property Rating Method

I rate these properties based on the following criteria:

  • Room Variety: I use this to rate the room options offered by every property. What room types are available? Can it accommodate different budgets, group sizes, and preferences? I ask myself these questions when evaluating the property’s room variety.
  • Comfort and Cleanliness: This measures the overall cleanliness and comfort of the accommodations. Does it have comfortable beds? Are the rooms spotless and dust-free? These are important factors I consider when rating comfort and cleanliness.
  • Location: This is used to evaluate how convenient and accessible the property is. How close is it to the attractions? Are there good public transportation options near the location? Is it easily accessible for families? These questions are important when I rate the location of every accommodation.
  • Affordability: I use this to evaluate the property’s affordability. Are the room rates reasonable? Does the property have any additional fees? Does the property offer discounts or packages? I ask myself this in order to rate affordability.
  • Family-Friendliness: This evaluates the family-friendliness of each property. Does it offer babysitting services and children’s activities? Does it have connecting rooms for families? I use these questions to rate the family-friendliness of the property.

Visitors should make a point of stopping by the Southeast Ohio History Center, but you don't forget to make time to do a bit of shopping while exploring the historic buildings along the brick Court Street.

Columbus, Ohio walking path and skyline.

Columbus, Ohio

Distance from Cincinnati: 100 miles – 1 hour 35 minutes

You can’t compile a list of day trips from Cincinnati without of course including the capital of Ohio! Columbus has so much to offer and is for a great way to spend the day without having to drive too far.

There are so many incredible experiences in Columbus but to highlight some of the most popular I have to mention Columbus Zoo & Aquarium, COSI, and the Easton Town Center:

  • Columbus Zoo & Aquarium : The Columbus Zoo is home to 11,000+ animals with nearly 600 unique species. Ranked in the top five for zoos in the United States, the Columbus Zoo is an experience that you do not want to miss out on if you visit the Columbus area with kids or if you’re an animal lover.
  • COSI : COSI, an acronym for the Center of Science and Industry, is an interactive Science and Research Museum. This museum is home to so many amazing exhibits that allows visitors to engage in experiments and activities while simultaneously learning the science and history of what is in front of them. Some of the most popular exhibits include “Space” (visitors ride in a space capsule and see what it is like to be an astronaut), “Life” (explore the human body and learn what makes it function), and “Progress” (travel through time and see how technology has evolved beginning in 1898 all the way up to the technology of today).
  • Easton Town Center: If shopping is your thing, the Easton Town Center is something you don’t want to miss during your day trip to Ohio’s capital. This is a great way to spend the day because there is so much to offer all within one location. The campus is home to 300+ stores to fit all your shopping needs, there are some of the most delicious dining experiences if you’re looking for something to eat, and if you are wanting some more entertainment, you can even catch a movie at the largest movie theater in the state of Ohio: the AMC Theater in Columbus.

Lastly, if you haven’t seen it before, don’t head back to Cincinnati before stopping to see the stately capitol building.

Indianapolis is a doable day trip from Cincinnati, Ohio.

Indianapolis, Indiana

Distance from Cincinnati: 112 miles – 1 hour 50 minutes

Being the largest city in the state of Indianapolis, the city has so much to do that it makes for a great place to spend a day. Some of the most popular attractions in Indianapolis include the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, the Children’s Museum of Indianapolis, and White River State Park:

  • Indianapolis Motor Speedway: If you are a fan of Nascar I’m sure you are familiar with the Indy 500. The Indianapolis Motor Speedway is home to the Indy 500 as well as multiple other Nascar races and is the largest sports venue in the world. Seeing the Indianapolis Motor Speedway is a very cool experience and one I would highly recommend whether you are into racing or not.
  • The Children’s Museum of Indianapolis: The Indianapolis Children’s Museum is the largest children’s museum in the world. With the incredible exhibits that it has to offer, I would highly recommend checking it out no matter what age you are. Some of the most popular exhibits include “All Aboard!”, “The Power of Children”, and “Beyond Spaceship Earth”.
  • White River State Park: The White River State Park is home to many Indianapolis attractions including the Indiana State Museum, the Indianapolis Zoo, the Eiteljorg Museum, and Victory Field, the latter of which is home to the Minor League Baseball team, the Indianapolis Indians.

Young’s Jersey Dairy – Yellow Springs, Ohio

Distance from Cincinnati: 72 miles – 1 hour 15 minutes

This one may not be the most obvious day trip to those outside of Ohio but it is actually a very popular location and one that is a great place to see some farm animals and have some fun!

Young’s is a dairy farm and while there you can meet, pet, and feed the animals that live on the farm.

In addition to the animals, there is also a putt-putt golf course, a dairy store, and a batting range. There is also ice cream for sale for a delicious treat to finish off your day at the farm.

Throughout the year the farm also hosts seasonal events. Some of these include an annual Easter egg hunt, a pumpkin patch and haunted hay rides during the fall, and a tree farm in where you can choose and cut down your very own Christmas Tree in the winter.

The National Air Force Museum in Dayton is just an hour from Cincinnati, Ohio.

Dayton National Air Force Museum – Dayton, Ohio

Distance from Cincinnati: 60 miles – 1 hour

Being the shortest distance on our list, the Dayton National Air Force Museum is a great place to spend your day and you won’t have to drive very far to get there from Cincinnati.

The National Museum of the United States Air Force is located at the Wright-Patterson Air Force Base and it known as the oldest and largest museum focused on military aviation in the world.

While there you will see some of the aircrafts and artifacts from the United States Air Force’s history. Not only is it a great day trip from Cincinnati, but it is also an affordable one. Admission and parking for the museum is completely free! The only thing you will be required to pay for is if you choose to participate in additional attractions such as the flight simulators or the Museum Theatre.

If the National Air Force Museum isn’t enough to fill your day, Dayton also has plenty of shopping, dining, and other attractions in the area to add to your itinerary.

Lexington, Kentucky is a great day trip for horse fans.

Lexington, Kentucky

Distance from Cincinnati: 83 miles – 1 hour 20 minutes

If you love horses, you’ll love a day trip from Cincinnati to Lexington, Kentucky. Since Cincinnati is right on the southwest border of Ohio, the main sights of Kentucky aren’t as far as you might think! In less than 90 minutes you can find yourself surrounded by horse farms and race tracks.

Definitely don’t miss a visit to the Kentucky Horse Park where you can visit the International Museum of the Horse and see the Hall of Champions where former horse champions now live. A visit to Keeneland horse track is also a must-do for horse racing fanatics.

Non-horse related activities to do in Lexington include touring the Mary Todd Lincoln house, where you can learn more about the life of Abraham Lincoln’s wife; walk around the Arboretum where you can learn more about the natural world in and around Lexington; and take a tranquil hike through the Raven Run Nature Sanctuary. Lexington is also known for its many breweries and distilleries.

And, if you want to go to the most famous horse race of all, you’ll have to go to Louisville where the Kentucky Derby is held each year. Which brings us too our last day trip of this list…

Louisville, Kentucky is a great day trip for those who love horse racing, baseball, and bourbon.

Louisville, Kentucky

Distance from Cincinnati: 99 miles – 1 hour 30 minutes

Louisville blends southern charm and big city living with a perimeter of gorgeous countryside. It’s also home to Churchill Downs, the racetrack where the Kentucky Derby is held each year.

Even if you’re not in Louisville during the Kentucky Derby, you can still tour Churchill Downs. A visit to the Kentucky Derby Museum will also teach you more about the history of the storied horse race.

If you’re more into baseball than horses, check out the Louisville Slugger Museum and Factory, where baseball bats are produced for the Major League.

Louisville also has several Bourbon distilleries where you can learn more about the distilling process and taste some local Kentucky Bourbon.

If you are looking to plan a day trip from the Cincinnati area, I would highly recommend one of the above options. These are all great ways to spend your day and make for a quick and affordable escape from your everyday life.

*All mileage and timing was calculated based on the distance from downtown Cincinnati, Ohio. Driving times are estimates, but can differ depending on traffic and weather.

With tasty restaurants, charming neighborhoods , and serene city parks , Cincinnati’s packed with impressive attractions and activities. But just beyond the Queen City, a host of day trip adventures await. And, the city’s proximity to Kentucky and Indiana means you can cross multiple states and sights off your bucket list, all within two hours.

The following six Cincinnati day trips offer a bit of something for everyone—from sports and roller coasters to outdoor adventures and adult beverages. Here are the best day trips from Cincinnati for a quick getaway:

The skyline over Cincinnati

Dayton, Ohio

Why go: Learn aviation history

Ohio is the birthplace of aviation , and it has two Dayton legends to thank: Wilbur and Orville Wright, the brothers who invented and flew the first aircraft. This aviation history abounds throughout the city, starting with the Wright Brothers National Museum in Dayton’s Carillon Historic Park. Beyond aviation artifacts like the 1905 Wright Flyer III plane, the Carillon Historic Park also features an onsite brewery and grill , with beers crafted using a traditional 1850s-era brewing process.

The National Museum of the United States Air Force , the largest and oldest military aviation museum in the world, is another Dayton gem. This hub, with 350 aerospace vehicles and thousands of artifacts, brings the U.S. Air Force’s history to life. And the Wright-Dunbar Interpretive Center , housed in the same building the Wright brothers used for their main business, a print shop, rounds out Dayton’s aviation attractions.

The best bites near the museum include craft beer and tater-tot heaven Warped Wing, named after the Wright brothers’ design feature of “ wing warping .”

How to get to Dayton

Driving is the best way to get from Cincinnati to Dayton; public transit is available via Greyhound, but takes triple the time. The route is an easy one-hour drive up Interstate 75, with rental cars available throughout Cincinnati and at the CVG airport. If time allows, add a stop at Dayton-favorite Marion’s Piazza , a no-frills but flavor-packed pizza spot, located just off I-75 (near the Dayton Mall).

Yellow Springs, Ohio

Why go: For the LGBTQI-friendly community

Spirited getaway Yellow Springs is one of Ohio’s most unique small towns—and it’s also among the most welcoming, with higher LGBTQ+ members than most other Ohio communities. Peace signs, pride flags and Black Lives Matter window displays show that the city is proud of its inclusive values. Mark your calendar for late June when the Yellow Springs community comes together to celebrate YS Pride , a gathering with a parade, tailgate and home-decorating contest.

Yellow Springs, also the home of comedian Dave Chappelle (who’s rumored to be opening his own Yellow Springs comedy club ), is a town of 3,400. Its downtown is packed with yoga studios, artist markets, and restaurants, including Sunrise Café , a local favorite with ingredients sourced from 20 nearby farms.  Yellow Springs Brewery is bike-friendly, with an outdoor taproom adjacent to the 80-mile multipurpose Little Miami Scenic Trail .

How to get to Yellow Springs

Driving is the easiest mode of transport between Cincinnati and Yellow Springs. It’s just over an hour's drive up Interstate 75 to Interstate 675. Rental cars are available throughout Cincinnati and at the CVG airport. Stop for Midwest comfort food at Nick’s Restaurant , a chill American joint known for its award-winning wings sauces and fried vegetables.

Red River Valley in Kentuckey's Daniel Boone National Forest

Red River Gorge Geological Area, Kentucky

Why go: Climb and hike through glacier-carved landscapes

Red River Gorge Geological Area , known locally as “The Red,” is an action-packed oasis in Kentucky’s Daniel Boone National Forest—and one of the best day trips from Cincinnati, particularly for adventure seekers. The Red is legendary among rock climbers, with steep sandstone walls offering thousands of routes. Climbing guides like the local Bluegrass Climbing School lead rock climbing and rappelling trips.

But this Kentucky getaway adventure extends well beyond climbing. Red River Gorge boasts over 70 trail miles along canyons, gorges, and arches. Some of the most scenic routes include the three-mile Natural Bridge & Laurel Ridge Trail, as well as the four-mile jaunt to Gray’s Arch. Mind-blowing underground kayaking and boat tours also wind through The Red’s caverns.

While you’re in town, don’t miss Miguel’s Pizza, famous in the climbing world for kick-starting The Red’s climbing scene in the 1980s. In addition to lunch, dinner, and margaritas, Miguel’s offers a rock-climbing store, along with their own accommodations nearby.

How to get to Red River Gorge

Red River Gorge is two hours southeast of Cincinnati. Car is the easiest way to get from point A to B, with the drive mostly following Interstate 75 south to Interstate 64 east, before hitting several backstreets on the way into The Red. Build in time for a stop in Winchester, Kentucky, the birthplace of beer cheese —where you can sample this local delicacy across the town’s Beer Cheese Trail .

Mason, Ohio

Why go: Ride the rollercoasters at Kings Island

Cincinnatians grow up testing their roller-coaster limits at Kings Island , a theme park in suburb Mason, just 25 minutes from the Queen City. Kings Island is among the best Cincinnati day trips, with 100 rides, shows, and attractions, plus 15 roller coasters, including the award-winning Orion, one of only seven giga coasters (rollercoasters with drops of 300 to 399 feet) in the world.

Food and drinks abound at Kings Island. For a local favorite, grab pizza from family-friendly  La Rosa’s , praised for its subtly sweet sauce. And Cincinnati’s famous Skyline Chili , beloved by many for its spaghetti with sweet chili on top, is available in the park as well.

Kings Island is easily doable in a day, but you can also stay overnight at the adjacent new Kings Island Camp Cedar , a luxury resort and RV park with onsite pools, camping, restaurants, bars, walking trails, and more.  It’s less than a mile from the theme park.

How to get to Mason

Via car is the fastest way to get from Cincinnati to Mason. It’s a quick 25-minute drive to the northeast along Interstate 71 north. The park is right off the highway. You can also take the local Metro’s 71X Kings Island Express bus to the park. This bus stops in downtown Cincinnati and travels north to the park.

Indy cars racing at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway

Indianapolis, Indiana

Why go: Visit the Indianapolis Motor Speedway and Museum

Like Cincinnati, Indianapolis is a charismatic Midwest city with its own vibrant culture, from art museum Newfields , one of the oldest museums in the country, to the White River State Park , an urban getaway which plays host to the Indianapolis Zoo, the Indiana State Museum and an art museum dedicated to Indigenous and western art. Of course, no Indy trip is complete without a stop at its most famous attraction: the Indianapolis Motor Speedway .

Erected in 1909, the speedway welcomes some of the fastest car races in the world, including the Indianapolis 500 on Memorial Day weekend (although different races run all year). To learn the history of this adrenaline-pumping track, visit the Indianapolis Motor Speedway Museum , with 37,500 square feet of exhibitions, including cars, racing records, and memorabilia.

Need a post-race bite or drink? Stroll a few blocks for hearty fare at Barbecue and Bourbon or craft beer at Daredevil Brewing , home to Indiana’s best-selling IPA, the Lift Off IPA. Both spots are less than one mile south of the track.

How to get to Indianapolis

Indianapolis is one hour and 45 minutes northeast of Cincinnati on Interstate 74. It’s most accessible via car, with rentals available throughout town and at the CVG airport. Grab a snack halfway between Cincinnati and Indianapolis in Batesville, Indiana, where the historic and recently renovated hotel, The Sherman , boasts a new biergarten and bier hall serving authentic German fare.

The Kentucky Bourbon Trail

Lexington, Kentucky

Why go: Explore the Kentucky Bourbon Trail

Lexington is arguably the best place to soak up Kentucky’s culture, with attractions like the Keeneland horse-racing course and a host of stops to try the state’s signature beverage: bourbon. There are  14 distilleries within 45 miles of Lexington and Kentucky makes 95 % of the world’s bourbon. See the Kentucky Bourbon Trail for proof.

The 250-mile Kentucky Bourbon Trail includes more than 30 distilleries, with shuttles and tours from Cincinnati, just 80 miles away. Cincy Brew Bus hosts private Bourbon Trail day tours to several distilleries like Buffalo Trace, Wild Turkey, and Woodford Reserve. Executive Transportation offers similar all-day excursions from Cincinnati as well.

If you’d rather hit multiple distilleries along the trail for a weekend-long trip, go a bit further west to Louisville, 90 minutes from Cincinnati, where Mint Julep Tours offers two and three-day options to safely hop from distillery to distillery. You can also do a self-guided bourbon trail tour following this map . (Always have a designated driver).

How to get to Lexington

Private tours offer transportation from Cincinnati to Lexington. If you’re driving yourself, the ride is roughly one hour and 20 minutes south along Interstate 75. Louisville is 100 miles southeast along Interstate 71. Tour transport or rental cars are suggested, as public transportation isn’t efficient. If you’re driving to Lexington, make a quick stop north of the city in Georgetown, where restaurant Local Feed pairs hip digs with drool-worthy comfort fare (don’t miss their crispy fried chicken).

10 family-friendly winter weekend getaways in the US

When I'm looking for a surefire way to beat the post-holiday blues, I plan a winter weekend getaway for the family. With a couple of long weekends on the calendar in the first quarter of the year, plus the ability to create your own whenever works for you, winter is an ideal time to get a fun trip on the schedule.

Whether you want to play in the snow or escape the cold for a balmier location, there’s a winter weekend trip within an easy drive or flight from where you live. Here are 10 of my favorite ideas for a memorable and fun-filled, family-friendly long weekend trip.

WHERE TO GO: 25 best family vacation spots in the U.S.A.

1. Nashville, Tennessee

I took my teenage daughter on a winter getaway to Nashville, and it was a perfect destination for a not-too-cold long weekend. Each morning began with our own DIY coffee shop-boutique hotel tour, starting the day with breakfast, a cup of coffee, and a stroll through the lobbies at the Fairlane Hotel, Bobby Hotel, and Noelle Nashville.

BEST TRIP EVER: 50 best family vacation ideas for all ages

Then we set off on foot (and one day by trolley) to experience Music City at spots like the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum, Ryman Auditorium, and the highly impressive and interactive National Museum of African American Music.

Food’s a big draw here, and we tried as much as we could by taking a food tour with Walk Eat Nashville and eating at Assembly Food Hall, which offers food and drink from more than 30 mostly local eateries and bars.

Where to Stay in Nashville: The Countrypolitan Nashville is a stylish and well-situated home base for exploring downtown Nashville, and you just might hear the next big thing performing at the hotel’s restaurant in the evening.

2. Crystal River, Florida

Winter is an ideal time to visit this city on the west coast of Florida, about an hour north of Tampa and less than two hours west of Orlando. That’s because winter is known as Manatee Season. Between November and March, hundreds of West Indian manatees head to the warmer spring-fed waters in these parts once the water temperature in the Gulf of Mexico drops.

OCEANSIDE FUN: 10 best family beach resorts in Florida

The “Manatee Capital of the World” is the only place in the U.S. where you can legally observe manatees while swimming alongside them (accompanied by local guides who make sure everyone behaves properly).

If you don’t want to get in the water, you can spot the gentle creatures on a boat tour or at places like Crystal River National Wildlife Refuge , the only refuge in the U.S. specifically created to protect habitats for manatees.

Where to Stay in Crystal River: There's nothing particularly fancy about the King's Bay Lodge , but its roomy suites sleep four comfortably, its spring-fed pool is a kid favorite, and its proximity to everything you'd want to do in Crystal River is unbeatable.

3. Long Beach Peninsula, Washington

Want to make a dramatic getaway? Head to Washington’s Long Beach Peninsula during the winter. Not far from Portland or Seattle, the area rates as a great place for storm watching during winter, thanks to the combination of seasonal king tides, stormy weather at this time of year, and the rushing water from the Columbia River.

COAST TO COAST: 7 charming coastal towns in the U.S. perfect for a family vacation

Bring your camera to capture the moody scenery, and take it with you when you wander the area’s seven state parks and five wildlife/conservation areas, where you might spot loons, chickadees, sparrows, and hawks during the colder months.

The region also sits along the state’s Cranberry Coast, and the Pacific Coast Cranberry Research Foundation Museum offers a self-guided tour of its cranberry bogs year-round. Winter is also a great time for oysters on the Long Beach Peninsula, which you can enjoy at restaurants like Shoalwater Seafood and The Depot.

Where to Stay on Long Beach Peninsula: Book a room at the pet-friendly Oceanview Inn at the Arch and you’ll be within walking distance of the beach and downtown Long Beach and well situated for enjoying all that the area has to offer.

4. Montgomery, Alabama

With winter weather that’s typically on the mild side, Montgomery offers a long weekend escape with lots of options. Outdoor fun can be found at spots like the Alabama Safari Park, Montgomery Zoo, and the Lagoon Park Trail.

GO SOMEWHERE WARM: 10 tropical destinations you can visit without a US passport

This is an amazing place for the family to learn about the city’s important role in Black history and the American Civil Rights Movement at sites like The Legacy Museum and National Memorial for Peace and Justice, Civil Rights Memorial Center, and Freedom Rides Museum . Annual events on Martin Luther King, Jr. Day include a parade down historic Dexter Avenue, where you can find the Dexter Avenue King Memorial Baptist Church where King led the congregation from 1954 to 1960.

Refuel along the way at Chris’ Famous Hotdogs, where everyone from Franklin D. Roosevelt and Dr. King to Elvis Presley has eaten.

Where to Stay in Montgomery: Occupying a century-old building, the newish SpringHill Suites Montgomery Downtown offers suites well-suited for family getaways and a downtown location that makes it easy to explore the city.

5. Coeur d’Alene, Idaho

This northwest Idaho city not far from Spokane, Washington, boasts 109 miles of lake shoreline and snowy scenic vistas during the winter. Take a Scenic Hot Cocoa Cruise with Lake Coeur d’Alene Cruises, and you might spot bald eagles swooping overhead while sipping your sweet treat (they congregate around Lake Coeur d’Alene every year from November through February).

SUN AND SAND: 12 best beach resorts in the U.S. for families

Three ski resorts located within an hour of Coeur d’Alene are an easy day trip from town and offer trails and terrain for all levels of skiers and snowboarders, while Raptor Reef Indoor Water Park provides thrills of a different kind. An annual mac and cheese festival takes place in January, serving up comfort food just right for the season, and the Winter Lights outdoor art experience illuminates downtown Coeur d’Alene every evening from January 26 through February 4.

Where to Stay: Set on the shores of Lake Coeur d’Alene, Coeur d’Alene Resort offers spacious rooms and suites (many with amazing views) plus amenities like a spa, fitness center, and indoor pool.

6. San Luis Obispo, California

Located between San Francisco and Los Angeles, San Luis Obispo (or SLO, pronounced "slow," as it’s known) offers a weekend getaway with a sustainable side. Many of its wineries are SIP-certified (sustainable in practice), and the city even uses herds of goats to clear out brush along its hillsides. Check out the area’s natural beauty while pedaling the city’s bike trails, hiking at spots like Irish Hills Natural Reserve and Reservoir Canyon, or strolling the area’s beaches.

WORLD’S BEST: 10 best all-inclusive beach resorts in the world

Head downtown for shops and restaurants, catch a flick at the Palm Theatre (the first solar-powered theater in the U.S.), and taste local produce and foods at the Downtown SLO Farmers’ Market that takes place every Thursday. And the kids will get a kick out of adding their own contribution to the quirky Bubblegum Alley.

Where to Stay in SLO: Tweens and teens will love the retro-modern, collegiate vibes and the on-site burger joint at The Wayfarer San Luis Obispo , located near the campus of Cal Poly San Luis Obispo.

7. Scottsdale, Arizona

Plan your escape to Scottsdale, where the sun is shining almost every day of the year and winter temperatures tend to be in the 60s and 70s. That means the weather is ideal for strolling through Old Town Scottsdale, exploring the Sonoran Desert at places like McDowell Sonoran Preserve and Pinnacle Peak Park, and frolicking at the kids’ splash pad and play area at the recently revitalized Scottsdale Civic Center.

GO WEST: 7 West Coast vacations with something for everyone in the family

There’s always an interesting exhibit or programming to enjoy at Western Spirit: Scottsdale’s Museum of the West and Frank Lloyd Wright’s Taliesin West, and the kids will appreciate riding the train and carousel at McCormick-Stillman Railroad Park and enjoying something sweet at the 1950s-era Sugar Bowl Ice Cream Parlor & Restaurant.

Where to Stay in Scottsdale: The kids will be fans of the Sonoran Splash pool at Fairmont Scottsdale Princess , which features two waterslides and a zero-entry; the grownups will enjoy making use of the kids' club to hit the links or squeeze in a spa treatment.

8. Boston, Massachusetts

Bundle up and spend a winter weekend wandering around Boston, which is road trip distance from much of the Northeast. It’s an ideal time of year to visit the city’s many excellent museums, like the Boston Children’s Museum, Museum of Science, and Museum of Fine Arts art museum. Glide around the Frog Pond Ice Skating Rink or sled down Flagstaff Hill at Boston Common (the oldest public park in the United States), then warm up over a plate of pasta in the city’s North End.

ATLANTIC COAST: 11 best seaside villages and coastal towns in New England

After strolling picturesque (and potentially snow-covered) neighborhoods like Beacon Hill and the Back Bay, head indoors to browse and taste your way through spots like Boston Public Market, High Street Place, Hub Hall Boston, and the much-visited Faneuil Hall Marketplace and Quincy Market.

Where to Stay in Boston: Choose the Boston Marriott Long Wharf for your long weekend stay and you’ll enjoy views of Boston Harbor and be within walking distance of sites like the New England Aquarium, Faneuil Hall, and portions of the Freedom Trail.

9. Lake Geneva, Wisconsin

Make the most of the winter weather in Lake Geneva, which is within easy driving distance of cities like Chicago and Milwaukee. Head to spots like The Mountain Top at Grand Geneva Resort, Big Foot Beach State Park, and The Ridge Hotel for skiing, sledding, snowshoeing, hiking, and ice skating, or kick things up a notch with a winter ziplining and ropes course adventure or some ice fishing. There’s an annual snow sculpting event during the winter months, and the Winter Realms experience includes ice slides, ice sculptures, and other chilly fun.

BRING THE KIDS: 10 best Caribbean family resorts

Where to Stay in Lake Geneva: Timber Ridge Lodge & Waterpark serves as a great all-in-one location for families, where suites offer lots of room for the whole crew and amenities include an indoor water park, mini bowling, and an arcade.

10. Washington, DC

Plan a low-cost, museum-filled winter getaway to Washington, DC. Admission is free at the city’s Smithsonian Institution museums, where the family can explore the history of flight at the National Air and Space Museum, the African American experience at the National Museum of African American History and Culture, and the natural world at the National Museum of Natural History.

Head outdoors to admire the city’s many monuments and memorials like the Lincoln Memorial, Jefferson Memorial, and Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial (all free to visit), and take a spin around the ice skating rinks at the National Gallery of Art Sculpture Garden or at The Wharf. Then warm up over dinner at family-friendly restaurants like Old Ebbitt Grill, Boardwalk Bar & Arcade, and Tonic at Quigley’s Pharmacy. FOR OLDER KIDS: 10 best family resorts with teen clubs and activities

Where to Stay in DC: Four Seasons Hotel Washington, DC caters to families with amenities like baby gear and strollers; games, books, and sports equipment for use; an indoor pool; and sightseeing guides geared toward children.

Nevada, northern California brace for blizzard, 'life-threatening' conditions

winter weekend trips from cincinnati

The Sierra Nevada is bracing for "life-threatening blizzard conditions" on Friday ahead of a forecast of heavy snows that could bury parts of northern California and Nevada while also triggering deadly road conditions.

Forecasters say the winter storm will cause "whiteout blizzard conditions" and travel will be "extremely dangerous to impossible."

The National Weather Service issued a blizzard warning for parts of Nevada and northern California until Sunday morning and a winter storm warning until at least Saturday afternoon. A high wind warning was also issued in Nevada through Saturday morning.

"If you haven't chosen to stay in for the weekend, prepare for life-threatening travel conditions as our next weather-maker takes over," the NWS wrote.

Snow levels could reach up to 10 feet in high elevation areas above 7,000 feet. Other areas above 6,000 feet could accumulate up to 8 feet of snow. Lower areas, including Lake Tahoe, could see up to 6 feet of snow.

Winds could gust at more than 115 mph in high areas over the Sierra ridges, and up to 70 mph at lower elevations.

Forecasters say the severe conditions won't abate for at least the duration of the weekend. Winds could subside in the valleys on Monday, but snow showers could continue, with a chance of up to 45% for more snow in the Sierra Nevada midway through the week.

Last year, the Donner Pass saw nearly 12 feet of snow pile up over the course of seven days in late February.

The Sierra Nevada has a history of racking up hefty snow levels during severe winter storms.

It set a record in 1952, when the Donner Pass recorded 154 inches of snow over the course of eight days in January, as winds blew 80 mph and created 40-foot drifts, according to the Truckee Historical Society .

'Treacherous' conditions could make travel on mountain roads 'life-threatening'

The NWS warned travelers not to venture out as the heavy snow and damaging winds produce "treacherous" conditions on mountainous roads.

Donner Pass, the 7,000-foot-high mountain pass 40 miles west of Reno, as well as parts of Interstate 5 in northern California, could close down completely, according to Accuweather.

Heavy winds blowing across the roads could also bring drivers' visibility to "near zero," the NWS said.

Forecasters warned that travelers could become stranded on the roads while the snow could overwhelm road crews.

The storm could also knock out power to residents of mountainous or remote locations. Accuweather experts advised residents to keep chimneys open and release exhaust from furnaces to avoid carbon monoxide poisoning.

Schools close ahead of severe weather on Friday

The incoming storm prompted schools in affected areas to cancel classes on Friday.

Washoe County in Nevada, which encompasses Reno, canceled all classes, activities, and events, citing the dangerous road conditions. Officials also shuttered the doors of schools in the Storey County School District , located just east of Reno.

Children in Tahoe City and Truckee, located on the California side of the border with Nevada, were released early on Thursday and stayed home on Friday, according to school officials . Schools just south in the Lake Tahoe Unified School District also closed on Friday.

The University of Nevada, Reno at Lake Tahoe, also suspended all operations and in-person classes on Thursday and Friday in response to the weather.

'High to extreme' avalanche danger throughout weekend

The Sierra Avalanche Center issued an avalanche watch for the Central Sierra Nevada mountains on Thursday. The Center said a "high to extreme" avalanche danger could occur between Friday morning and Sunday afternoon.

The Center also announced a backcountry avalanche warning in effect until 5 p.m. on Sunday for the mountainous area between Yuba Pass and Ebbetts Pass, including the Greater Lake Tahoe area.

High intensity snowfall beginning on Thursday afternoon could form dangerous slabs of snow, the Center said. "Gale force winds will form slabs of wind-blown snow along ridges, gully features, and in exposed areas."

One avalanche fatality has occurred in the Sierra Nevada mountains so far this year. In January, the Placer County Sheriff's Office reported the death, along with one additional injury, after an avalanche broke out at the Palisades Tahoe ski resort.

So far this year, eight people in the U.S. have died due to avalanches, according to the Colorado Avalanche Information Center . The 2022-2023 winter season saw a total of 30 avalanche deaths across the country caused.

Lake Tahoe is the site of one of the deadliest avalanches in history – the March 1982 Alpine Meadows avalanche . Seven people were killed in the disaster after more than 7 feet of snow piled up at the ski resort over four days in late March.

Coupled with winds traveling 100 mph, the snowfall triggered a historically destructive avalanche. The resort had barred skiing amidst the dangerous conditions, but seven guests and employees lost their lives, including one 11-year-old, the youngest victim. The avalanche also destroyed a two-story ski lift workers' building and other heavy equipment.

Oregon winter weather: Storm warning for mountains, high winds and rain for valley, coast

winter weekend trips from cincinnati

A slew of weather warnings have been issued across western Oregon for mountain snow, strong winds and heavy rain Wednesday afternoon into Friday morning.

Willamette Valley snow is not forecast until potentially Friday night into Saturday morning.

Winter storm warning issued for Cascade mountain roads

A winter storm warning has been issued for a wide swath of the Cascade mountain roads due to heavy snow and high winds, the National Weather Service in Portland said . The warning starts 4 p.m. Wednesday and ends 6 a.m. Friday.

Four to 11 inches of snow is projected above 1,500 feet, which would include areas such as the Detroit and Oakridge areas in the foothills.

Above 2,500 feet, between 12 to 24 inches of snow is forecast. That includes mountain roads up to Santiam Pass (Highway 20), Willamette Pass (Highway 58) and the Mount Hood area (Highway 26), along with roads in the southern Cascades.

Winds could reach 50 mph, leading to whiteout conditions.

“Travel could be very difficult. Patchy blowing snow could significantly reduce visibility. Gusty winds could bring down tree branches,” the NWS warning said.

Winter storm advisory for roads in Coast Range

A winter storm advisory has been issued for the Coast Range.

Anywhere from 2-7 inches of snow is forecast above 1,500, which could impact some of the higher roads between the Willamette Valley and the coast. Upward of 7-14 inches is forecast above 2,500 feet, with winds gusting 55 mph.

Strong winds across Oregon

High winds could bring down power lines Wednesday into Thursday, as gusts are forecast to reach 50-55 mph on the coast and 35-40 mph inland and in the Willamette Valley.

“Isolated power outages and tree damage possible,” the National Weather Service said.

Rain to cause rivers and creeks to rise, but flooding appears unlikely

Around 1-2 inches of rain is forecast for the Willamette Valley, with higher amounts in the foothills below snow level. No major flooding is forecast, although many rivers and creeks will rise toward “action” stage.

Willamette Valley snow possible this weekend

The snow level is forecast to drop toward the Willamette Valley floor by Friday night and into the weekend. Lowland snow appears possible Friday night into Saturday morning.
