View Bali Hai, also known as the Makana Mountain, which starts at the beginning of the Na Pali Coast on the north shore of Kauai. Soar over Manawaiopuna Falls, one of the Garden Isleās most famous waterfalls . Best known from the opening of the 1993 blockbuster film, Jurassic Park. Watch from above as the water rushes over a 380-foot tall cliff surrounded by walls of deep green lush flora. Located within HanapÄpÄ Valley on the west side of the island, it is a site few can say they have seen while on Kauai.
Continue on over to Hanalei Bay which covers nearly two miles of beach and is backed by 4000ft tall emerald mountains: Hihimanu is on the east, Namolokama is in the middle with its square top, and the triangular shaped Mamalahoa is to the west. Often cloaked with a mist of clouds the Mt. Waialeale ridge home to dozens of cascading waterfalls.
The name Waialeale, meaning ārippling water or overflowingā receives over 400 inches of rain per year and is known to be one of the wettest spots on earth. Youāre surrounded by enchanting waterfalls and lush green walls of fauna. Waialeale Crater aka Blue Hole & The Weeping Wall. From above you will see it all and find yourself lost in the beauty and mystery of Kauaiās enchanting lure.
Other sites like the Wailua Falls and Waimea Canyon are also famous aerial sites on the Doors-Off Adventure Tour.
Short answer is āyesā. However, rest assured, prior to every flight our pilots and ground crew review the weather to make sure it is not only safe, but also conducive to a quality tour for you. We understand that this is a big expenditure, and we want to make sure you get your moneyās worth. We will cancel your tour and make sure you get a full refund if there is poor visibility, or if the pilot determines the winds are unsafe.
We give a 100% refund for cancellations made 48 hours before the tour date. If there is inclement weather or unscheduled maintenance, we will either reschedule your tour or issue a 100% refund. Keep in mind that if the tour is booked with a third party, their cancellation and refund policy may differ from ours.
All guests must provide their own transportation. We recommend Taxi, Uber, or Lyft. We ask guests to allow an extra 15 minutes of travel time due to unforeseen traffic, to arrive early or on time for their check in.
The doors-off helicopter tour is extremely windy. We recommend comfortable athletic wear, no loose shirts, or dresses, or skirts. Closed-toe shoes or sandals with a heel strap. Hair should be secured in a bun or tightly braided, no loose ponytails or braids. Temperatures are 10-15 degrees cooler and we recommend a windbreaker or a jacket to protect against the wind chill.
All of the tour times we offer are great times to view the island. Time is personal preference whether you like to be an early bird and do activities first thing in the morning, or take your time and do a later tour midday or afternoon.
You may reschedule or cancel your tour for a full refund if done 48 hours prior to the tour date and time. It should be noted that it does rain almost every day in Hawaii. Most of the time it is in very small areas at a time, which does not affect our tours. So we do not recommend cancelling or rescheduling based on a forecast of rain.
Front Seat upgrades are the two seats in the front with the pilot. Selecting these seats guarantees the seating assignment if the two passengersā body weights combined do not exceed the 345 pounds weight limit. The front seats are sold only as a pair together, whether it is for one or two people. The open seating is any seat in the helicopter. Open class seating is assigned by body weights. For solo passengers, we try our best to accommodate a seat next to the open door. For couples, we seat you two together in the same row. For a party of three, we either seat two passengers in the front and the third passenger in the rear seat, or vice versa depending on the weights. For a party of four passengers, we will seat accordingly by each body weight, typically the two body weights that are the lightest combined at, or under, 345 pounds will be seated in the front. For any seating, you may add a request upon booking. We do not guarantee seating nor assign seating until the day of the tour. Premium Plus seatings are for any guests that weigh 240lbs/109kg or more. An additional seat is blocked and reserved to ensure the combined passenger weight does not exceed the aircraft limitation of 745lbs/339kg.
Because this is a doors-off helicopter tour operation we must take extra steps ā in accordance with FAA regulations ā to make sure nothing flies out of the helicopter in flight. A phone flying out the door could hurt someone on the ground, or even damage the helicopter if it hits the spinning rotors. Requiring a tether for your phone allows you to enjoy the tour without having to worry about it slipping out of your hands and being lost forever. If you do not have a phone tether, one will be available for your use.
The minimum age requirement is 10 years old. A responsible adult must be seated next to any child. No lap children are allowed, and each person is required to wear a seat belt.
808-651-0619 or use our Contact Form
Weight Restrictions: Front Seats are sold as a pair only, with a maximum combined weight limit of 340lbs/154kg. Guests weighing more than 240lbs./109kg and parties of two (2) with a combined weight of more than 400lbs./182kg, must reserve (1) one additional seat at the regular price. Private Tour 4 guest maximum weight limit is 745lbs/338kg.

- Chevron down Weight Restrictions
Our weight limit in place for an individual is 250 lbs and 400 lbs per pair. Weight limits include all clothing, shoes, and carry-on items. The reason why our weight limit is different for pairs is to ensure that they can be on the same flight.
All passengers weighing over 250 lbs and pairs weighing over a combined 400 lbs are required to purchase an additional adjacent seat at checkout.
The weight and balance of a helicopter are crucial to its ability to fly, so we appreciate your understanding of strictly enforcing this policy. In order to comply with FAA regulations, we will discretely weigh every passenger upon checking in.
For parties of 3-4 passengers, we require one of the passengers to be 150 lbs or less and no taller than 5’10” to accommodate the front middle seat. This policy is to ensure that your party can fly together on the same helicopter. This aircraft, the MD500, has a front middle seat with a weight limitation of 150 lbs and a height restriction of 5’10”.
- Chevron down FAQs
- We strongly believe that 60 minutes should be the minimum flight time for a helicopter tour of Kauai. Our 60-65 minute tour offers superior viewing, more opportunity for photography and video, and better value than those flown for only 45-50 minutes. It may not seem like much time on the ground but when youāre in the air, every minute counts. The extra 5, 10, or 15 minutes that we spend over Kauaiās verdant valleys, water-carved canyons, and the sculpted Na Pali Coast allow our pilots to go slower, fly lower, and spend more time at these tour highlights. It takes a minimum of 1 minute to make a full turn (safely and slowly) in a helicopter, which our pilots often do while hovering over scenic areas, to allow passengers on both sides of the helicopter opportunities for unobstructed viewing and to capture great photos/videos. Plus when broken down to cost-per-minute the value of our 60 minute tour is often more affordable than those only flown for 45-50 minutes.
What should I wear?
- For the Door-Off experience, you MUST wear shoes that are laced or strapped on. We highly recommend bringing a light jacket, preferably something waterproof for the cool and potentially misty breeze. For all tours, we recommend wearing a long sleeve shirt, pants, and comfortable shoes. For everyoneās safety, we do not allow any hats, beanies, GoPro head mounts, scarfs, turbans, or other headgear for any of our tours. These items pose a risk to everyoneās safety when boarding, flying, and deboarding.
Can I bring my children?
- For our Doors-Off tour, your child must be at least 10 years of age and must be accompanied by an adult. If you would like to fly on our doors-off tour and your child is not old enough yet, we recommend asking your hotel if they offer any babysitting or daycare services.
Can I make a seat request?
- Because safety is our first priority, we must arrange seating to optimize the weight and balance of the aircraft. However, if you do have a seat preference you have the opportunity to let the staff know upon booking. We will try our best to honor those requests but please keep in mind,Ā we cannot guarantee any seat requests.Ā
What You Can Bring:
- Phone or camera (with wrist or neck strap)
- Windbreaker or jacket
- Secure shoes
What You CANNOT Bring:
- Hats, beanies, or any similar headwear
- Bags, backpacks, or purses
- Any loose items
- Selfie stick or GoPro stick longer than 12 inches
- Magnetic Gimbals (allowed with an additional strap to secure)
- Flip flops/slip on footwear

- Chevron down Weather and Cancellations
Weather Policy: With safety being our number one priority, we will only fly if current conditions allow for a safe and smooth flight. On top of that, if we feel the weather is such that it is not worth your time and money for a tour, we will not fly. Keep in mind that weather patterns vary from hour to hour on Kauai so we are constantly monitoring between and during tours. Each tour is unique and the exact path flown will vary depending on the weather. However, we donāt want a little rain to frighten you. Keep in mind that the fantastic waterfalls and rainbows for which Kauai is famous will become more abundant soon after rain.
Cancellation Policy: You may cancel your flight with no obligations by notifying us at least 48 hours before your tour is scheduled to depart. āNo-showsā and reservations canceled within the 48-hour period before the scheduled flight time are subject to full charges.

By far the best part of this trip. I'm a wild guy into action sports and this ride thrilled the hell out of me. amazing views. amazing staff. Having the DOORS OFF is sooooo much more fun and intimate than a regular helicopter. Our Pilot ADAM was fun, friendly, and an excellent tour guide as well telling us about the island as we flew not only over it - but THROUGH it - hovering above waterfalls just inside giant volcanic towering wells. BUY THIS TRIP - DONT HESITATE !!!
One of the best experiences in my whole life! Thrilling, exciting, breathtaking views and the crew + Steve our pilot/guide was so amazing!!
This flight is a must if you are travelling Kauai, you get to see the entire island in all its raw beauty. Our Pilot Nick was full of information and had great insights into the island, as a bonus he had a fantastic playlist to match the scenes we were passing. Great time! Awesome service.
Great staff and office facility. Pilot was incredible and was a huge part of the trips fun.
I have parasiled off a volcano and skydived in Arizona but this chopper ride was 10 times better than those. It was a thorough view of the Island and the chopper got so close to all the mountain tops and valleys that it felt like I could touch them. Also, I tend to get sick on a Merry-Go-Round but I did not get nauseated at all on this ride.
Tried to communicate through online chat with Sam. Very helpful! Luckily I could book the helicopter tour on the same date. The pilot was AMAZING!!!! Steve, you are the best!!!!!!
Absolutely fabulous; awesome experience

Mahalo! So glad it all worked out and look forward to seeing some of your photos.
Chelsie – March 24, 2017
This was our first time to Kauai and first time to experience riding in a helicopter. Adrian was our pilot and he was fantastic!! He was very knowledgeable of the island and had plenty of interesting things to share. You could tell he genuinely wanted us to have a wonderful time and did all he could to make it a great flight. The doors off was such a thrill and I would definitely suggest doing it this way! (Just make sure to bring a jacket.) We enjoyed the private tour being just us two and the pilot. Tanya helped us out a great deal as we tried to figure out what would be best for us. There was a miscommunication on the time of our tour and she did all she could to make it perfect for us, and honestly we couldn’t be happier with how it all turned out. Thank you Tanya!! I highly recommend doing this helicopter tour! You will not be disappointed!

Make sure to book all your activities with Tanya at Kauai.com. She knows all this stuff and is very honest, and kind. There was a storm coming in and we were a little nervous but Tanya kept us calm. It ended up being a perfect day. As for the helicopter ride, all I can say is “WOW.” There is nothing like seeing this Island from the air. Our pilot (Forrest) knew everything about the island and its history. Well worth every penny. BTW…Watching the whales from the air is awesome.
Bill – July 24, 2015
This was my first flight in a helicopter and it was so awesome. When you arrive at the airport you see all the other helicopter’s and it seems to me like the kind this company uses is the best. This is because they are small, you always have a window seat. You can have them take the doors off, and because it is so small there is less helicopter to get in the way of everything there is to see. Things get really beautiful about 10 minutes in once you get away from the populated areas. While I haven’t tried the other companies, I can only say that this was amazing. Our pilot was really cool and made it even more fun. It was also a great way to discover all the different things to do on the island. I would recommend doing this as one of the first things you do after arriving on the island.

Description
The most respected name in helicopter tourism over the years, Jack Harter created the helicopter tourism industry on Kauai way back in 1962. Jack invites you to escape the ordinary; to leave the byways of man and immerse yourself in the wilderness grandeur of the Garden Isle. His company offers tours in two different models of aircraft, both feature two-way communication with the pilot.
The Jack Harter Doors Off Tour is flown in the four passenger Hughes 500 for an exhilarating air tourism experience. Imagine yourself zooming along the spires of the Na Pali Coast with the wind blowing in your hair and looking straight down to the ocean below! This doors off helicopter is not for everyone, but if you are adventurous or are a photographer concerned about the window causing reflections in your photos, this might be the best tour for you.
The Jack Harter Doors Off Helicopter tour follows a circle island route clockwise around the island and features Jurassic Falls, Waimea Canyon, the Na Pali Coast, Hanalei Valley, Waialeale Crater, and Wailua Falls. Exact tour routes and sites seen on each tour can vary based upon weather conditions, but wherever you fly you will surely be stunned by the island's beauty and thrilled with the doors off experience.
Jack Harter Doors Off Helicopter Rate (JHH3)
$324.00 per Passenger, $35.00 per Fuel Surcharge (Hawaii sales tax included)
Directions: Check in at Jack Harter's location about halfway between the Lihue Airport and downtown Lihue / Walmart area. Park at their office and their shuttle takes you to the heliport and returns you after your flight.
GPS Address: 4231 Ahukini Rd., Lihue, HI 96766 Click to view map
Schedule: 7 days a week
Time: Flight throughout the day. Checkin 45 minutes prior to your flight time.
Duration: Flight time is approximately 1 hour
Reservations: Required well in advance of your vacation. Jack Harter will charge your credit card for your seats at the time your reservation is confirmed.
Minimum Notice for Cancellation / Changes: 48 hours prior to the start of the tour. If the pilot feels a quality tour cannot be conducted due to weather conditions, you will be contacted to reschedule for another day. If you can't reschedule, there is no charge for a tour cancelled by the pilot's decision to not fly.
Equipment: Hughes 500 - This helicopter is equipped with a quick release safety harness that is required by the FAA for all doors off flights.
Restrictions: Passengers weighing over 250 pounds or couples whose combined weight exceeds 400 pounds must purchase an extra seat. No loose objects are permitted in the helicopter. Cameras must have a strong wrist or neck strap. Minimum age is 10. Guests must be physically able to climb up into the helicopter as it is several steps off the ground.
What to Wear: Long pants and jackets are recommended since this helicopter is not climate controlled.
Important Note: Jack Harter only flies with a completely full helicopter. If they do not sell all the seats on your tour, they will move you to a different flight time. If you decide to fly with Jack Harter we suggest that you reserve the tour for the first full day in Kauai ... if your flight time or date needs to be changed you'll have time to reschedule it for later in your vacation.
It never ceases to amaze me that people spend thousands of dollars to come to Hawaii, but think it is too expensive to spend another $350 to REALLY see the islands from a helicopter. There is so much beauty that you cannot see any other way. Do yourself a favor and SPLURGE! You will thank me. I have flown with many helicopter companies and done flights over all the islands of Hawaii (except Niihau and Oahu). I don't think anyone who works in this industry would question the fact that Kauai is the most beautiful of the Hawaiian islands to fly over ... and is probably the most beautiful island in the world.
The doors off tours with Jack Harter are a wind-blown experience, and the temperature varies throughout the tour depending on your current altitude. No mood music on doors off tours ... you do wear headphones to listen to the pilot's narration and there is an intercom system so you can ask the pilot questions. This intercom doesn't work well in the back seat though ... it is windier back there. Flying with the doors off is certainly thrilling ... but it isn't for everyone.
Best time of day to fly? I think mid-morning provides the best lighting and least cloud cover. Kauai gets LOTS of rain ... the summit of Mt. Waiale'ale is one of the WETTEST places on the face of the earth. That's why this island is so beautifully carved and has so many waterfalls. Days that there are NO clouds are very rare. Typically the helicopters are able to fly back into the valleys while remaining safely below the cloud layer.
A word about body weights ... almost all helicopter companies in Hawaii have a 250 pound weight limit per seat. For larger passengers who exceed the weight limit it is necessary for the helicopter companies to leave a seat vacant so that there is adequate room for the larger passenger (and adjacent passengers). Some companies charge 50% extra for this "comfort seat" and others charge a full rate for the extra seat (which doubles the cost of the fare for a passenger over 250 pounds). Jack Harter charges 100% of the normal rate for this extra seat. They also charge extra in cases where the combined weight of 2 passengers exceeds 400 pounds. What about kids? The cost of a seat is the same whether the passenger is an adult or a child. "Doors off" tours have a minimum age of 10.

We felt safe during the ride. It was amazing to see through the big island by helicopter. It was amazing to see into the volcano. The staff are amazing. The pilot was open for questions during the flight. I learned a lot. Highly recommended!

Aloha Melinda, Mahalo for the phenomenal review! We are thrilled that you enjoyed this experience with us. Safari Helicopters appreciate you and your Ohana for choosing us as your tour provider. Best of luck for your new adventure!
This was my first helicopter ride, and it was a great experience. I had been in warned that I might have some motion sickness, which has been an issue flying in small planes and riding in cars on winding roads. But that was not the case at all with Safari Helicopters. Sam, our pilot, expertly flew the helicopter, warning us before every turn, when there could be some bumps (there weren't), and did a great job providing tons of info about the island, and answering all our questions. Unfortunately, the weather conditions wouldn't permit us to see the active lava, but we were warned about this ahead of time. We still decided to take the flight, and I'm so glad we did!
What a wonderful experience with Safari! Cookie, Samantha and Sam were a great team providing pre trip info, pre trip training, and in flight info. We felt safe and enjoyed the ride from beginning to end. Cookie greeted us as we approached the building. Informed us of how long before our pre flight meeting was happening. Greeted us using our surnames, it was quite impressive. She gathered us for the pre trip meeting, talked of the safety aspects to be aware of, which included the life vest, walking procedure out to the helicopter, all about the safety!! She then proceeds to walk us out to the helicopter in a specific order for safety. We were first in line, not knowing how that meant where we were going to get to sit inside the helicopter. She directed my wife and I to follow her over to the copter from our staging point about 20 feet in front of the copter. She opens the door and has us sit in the front row next to the pilot! How Cool!!! Cookie helps us with our seat belts and Sam helps us with the headsets. There is a button, think Jeopardy button that we have to push in order to talk to Sam. She says hello to make sure we hear her and we reply back to her Hello! It takes a minute to load all of the passengers, 6 of us and Sam our pilot. Sam goes through a few reminders of the safety concerns, how the emergency handles on the doors work, where the fire extinguishers were, and then we started up. What a smooth lift off and rise through the airport to clear the air space. It was my first ride in a helicopter and it will not be my last! I was impressed at how smooth our ride was, even the turns so that each side of the copter could see the sights. We made quite a few very tight turns for viewing and she always informed us prior to making the move so no one was surprised. Hats off to Sam for her amazing flying skill and knowledge that she shared with us about the Island and National Park. She even added some history in the mix that we appreciated. Thanks Safari Helicopters!

Aloha Darwin, Thank you for your splendid review. We are delighted that you had a pleasant experience flying with us. Safari Helicopters appreciate you and your wife for choosing us as your tour provider. We wish you best of luck for your next adventure!
We booked a private ride for the family to get the helicopter all to ourselves and we had a fantastic time! Our pilot, Sam, was very professional and a very steady pilot and warns us ahead of time if things will be choppy etc. We appreciate that since two of us tend to suffer from motion sickness, but she truly made it as enjoyable. We did book the first flight of the morning to also ensure less winds. We got to see into the volcano from the air and it was really spectacular. It was our kids' first time in a helicopter and we were celebrating a birthday and it was worth every pretty penny we splurged on this experience. We took lots of pictures, and the staff got a group picture of us in front of the helicopter after the ride as well. We had a wonderful time, felt completely safe, and highly recommend them to anyone who visits the Big Island!
The pilot was nice, but was a little disappointed with the company. We were supposed to go to a volcano, and it had just erupted two weeks prior. However, once we get to the place, we go through the briefing, and then they told the entire group that we need to figure out whether we want to go on the tour or not, the reason they asked this question was because it was cloudy, and the helicopter cannot go over the volcano anymore. We asked them: well what else can we see? To which they responded that we will be going to see some waterfalls, the 2018 eruption, among other things. We were not really interested in going anymore, because our main interest was to go see the volcano. And when we were about to cancel and get our full refund, they told us that it has to be a group decision, and if we say no, then the other group cannot go on their trip either. Out of pity for the other group, we decided to go on the trip. And we did see some good views, which is why I gave it two stars, and the pilot was very sweet (5/5), however, we did not even see any waterfalls. We only saw the 2018 eruption and the summit that cause that eruption. I mean, makes sense why its so cheap. The time that it took from the airport to the volcano national park took up half the time, and we were really only over the summit for 15 minutes - and the summit we were there for 3-5 minutes. They told us that they need 4 people to fly. The other group had 3 people. We couldn't let the other group not be able to go on their tour because we didn't want to go. It was very pressured and forced to say yes. Couldnt they have let some weight on the helicopter or something? I have never heard of this 4 people mandatory rule. Saying this, it makes me want to give them 1 star. They didnt have what we wanted to see, then lied about what we would see, and made us feel pressured to say yes. 2 stars because pilot was nice - chewy (5/5), and what we did get to see was nice
What an amazing experience. If you can afford this, you must do this. To properly see the volcano, lava & the birds eye view this is the ONLY way to go. You truly cannot appreciate this unless you do it. Cookie was awesome checking us in & giving us the low down; all with Hawaiian charm & hospitality! Then Sam was an amazing pilot! Very sensitive to making everyone comfortable & safe. I can't say enough fine things about her, except she was our favorite helicopter tour pilot we have ever had & we have had a few. Many Maholos!

Aloha D S, Thank you very much for the 5 star review! We are so happy to share this experience with you & to hear how much you enjoyed your tour with our Pilot Sam!
This company is only interested in filling flights. They will not call you ahead to cancel when they know they cant fly. Wadted time and taxi fare both ways, no flight. I get the safety issue, but when they have cancelled the ones before you, no excuse. Dont waste your time or money on these people.
Aloha, Thank you for your review. As a Helicopter company we are not only interested in filling flights, the goal is also to fly. The weather is ever changing on the Hawaiian Islands. With that being said, our Pilots run hourly weather reports to avoid canceling days at a time when we don't have to. Typically when we cancel a flight, we do our best to rebook you, or refund you if said dates don't work. We understand that canceling this experience is disappointing, & apologize for the inconvenience this brought to you on your trip. Best of luck to you on your future adventures, Safari Helicopters
Drive nearly 2 hours for a private tour just to get there and then canceling. Pay the little extra and go with blue Hawaiian tours
Aloha Hector, We at Safari Helicopters apologize for the cancelation & understand your disappointment & frustration. The weather on the Hawaiian Islands is ever changing. With that being said, your safety is our number one priority. We will not compromise your safety, nor the safety of our Pilots for any amount of money. We are happy to hear you were able to share the experience with your family & wish you the best on your future adventures! Mahalo, Safari Helicopters
Never posted a review to Yelp before but felt like we needed to make others aware of this experience. Unless you book the entire plane, Safari will likely refuse your reservation - for us it was an hour before we were set to board and after we'd already driven across the island. We booked a helicopter ride online, I received a call about an hour after letting me know that since we only had 2 people, they might not be able to take us unless more people booked. Despite that the info about needing more than two people was never stated on the website, we understood and just told them to confirm with us later that day if we would be able to go or not. I never received a call back, but I did receive a second email confirming our booking with information about when and where to meet. I called the company back later that afternoon and left a voicemail just asking for a final confirmation that we were, in fact, good to go as we would be driving from Kona to Hilo. The next morning, I received a call back letting me know that yes, we were booked and the agent gave me a time and directions on where to meet. We hit the road and were about 45 min away from Hilo when I got a call from a pretty rude employee telling me that since there were only 2 people, they couldn't take us. I told her about the conversation I had with the other employee just an hour earlier and she said she'd have to have her boss call me. Murphy called me a few minutes later, after I explained the situation, he halfway apologized and basically told me that he wasn't willing to do anything for us to make up for the situation. His final words on the call were "you're not going to get what you want." At the end of the day, the correct thing to do would have been to let us come on the flight regardless of the fact that they would have preferred to have more people on the flight. So, moral of the story is that this is unless you're willing to book the entire plane, they're going to wait until the last minute and then cancel your reservation. For us it was within 2 hours of takeoff time. We've talked to a few other helicopter companies who have been organized and accommodating! I would recommend saving yourself the headache and going with another company.

Aloha, you are correct a new employee incorrectly notified you that you were confirmed for the tour, however per our conversation and your own admission we called you back 10 min after that initial call and corrected that mistake. We were upfront with you from the very beginning, and we have no intention of deceiving our customers. There are times that tours need to be rescheduled due to insufficient participation, however this is very rare. We are always upfront with our customers and give them clear information. In your case you were given a correction within 10 min and that did not suffice with you. We apologize again for the inconvenience this caused you, however bullying others on the phone or in person is not tolerated here. We love to take our guests up and show them around, it gives us no pleasure to cancel a tour. We hope the rest of your holiday was pleasant and a success and wish you the best in the future.
We could not have asked for a better experience! We booked two days early for at 10:20 am flight since we were driving in from about an hour away. Stephanie called about an hour after booking saying that we were the only people booked for that time, and they don't go unless the flight is fully booked (makes sense given the cost to operate a helicopter). She politely asked if we could switch to the 9:20 flight. She was very appreciative when we agreed and offered us the two front seats as a thank you. I was super excited as my only hesitation in booking a helicopter tour was some reviews saying the experience totally depends on the seats you get. We got on the helicopter, and our pilot Sam was a pro. She was very communicative about when we might feel turbulence, when she was going to be making a hard bank, or when she had to switch to another channel to talk to air traffic control or other helicopter pilots. We felt totally safe in her hands. And my earlier hesitations would've been unfounded even if we weren't sitting in the front. She would bank right for a loop to make sure one side got to see a site, and then bank left for a loop to make sure the other side didn't feel slighted. I was really impressed with Sam's knowledge of Hawaiian history, custom, and mythology as well as vulcanology, seismology, and climatology. I wish I'd brought a recorder to take notes. Overall, an amazing experience! I would recommend doing the flight early in the trip. As we hiked in Volcano National Park or saw other sites later in our trip, it gave us a richer perspective having seen the views from the top.

Really Nice
A friend told us this was the best so we booked it. We really enjoyed the tour of the plantation and the grounds. Walking us through everything and watching the pig being removed from the ground was helpful in understanding luau. The food was really good and the show was neat. The show us more informative than exciting so if you are looking for showy action this may not be the luau you want. We really enjoyed everything and talking to the Smith family. Would go back.
When you go to a Luau I would expect a little authentic . May as well went to any local all you can eat. Food all tasted about the same (no special flaver) . The food was unloaded off a big chain Hotel truck pre cooked , not what I would expect. Show was nothing great and the perfomers didn't seem to enjoy there job.
The grounds are gorgeous, the food plentiful, the atmosphere very enjoyable... but the show had a lot to be desired. The dancers had no grace at all. It seemed like a high school rehearsal.
Have been to Smith's luau many times, but this was my first as a gluten sensitive diner. The family was great, they advised me ahead of time what I could have in the buffet line and also provided a separate plate of rice and chicken that was gluten free. I had an enjoyable time and my family, who had never been to Kauai, loved the whole experience. The special attention was very much appreciated.
Boring. Lame. Hokey. Cheesy. Sad. I can't beleive this is a professional production. It was so badly done and boring words can barely describe it. The only positive part is the gardens, which are nice. But you don't need the luau for that. Do yourself a favor and go to a luau in Maui. This one is an utter waste of time.
Do not believe that this is an "authentic" luau. Honestly, it's like watching other people's kids' dance recital. I was extremely disappointed. I was so looking forward to seeing a luau as it was my first trip to Hawaii. We did our best to make our own fun of the evening, but it was very crowded. And unless you have a large party, there are not seats specifically for you and you have to navigate masses of people trying to get into the dining area and awkwardly find somewhere to sit at large folding tables with strangers. The one positive that I can say is that for a buffet, the food was alright. I would not recommend this at all.

Frequently Asked Questions
Grand Canyon helicopter tours range anywhere from around $180 to $830 per person, depending on the tour type, company and add-ons, such as a canyon floor landing or a visit to the Grand Canyon Skywalk.
Recent travelers say a Grand Canyon helicopter tour is a once-in-a-lifetime experience. People say the views are amazing and that the unique angle of the Grand Canyon is breathtaking. Several also say the trained pilots are knowledgeable and have helped ease their fears about flying.
Most Grand Canyon helicopter tours are considered safe, with vetted pilots who meet approvals from the Federal Aviation Administration in maintenance, training and aircraft safety. Pilots are also required to fly a certain number of hours before leading a helicopter tour. However, keep in mind there are risks involved in any adventure activity you choose to participate in, and travel insurance with medical protections can be a valuable investment in this scenario.
The most common causes of commercial helicopter crashes typically involve mechanical problems, inadequate maintenance of the aircraft, rapidly changing weather conditions and varying pilot experience. If you have concerns, it's best to reach out to the tour companies directly for details on their protocols for pilot training and aircraft upkeep.
