ROCK REVIEW; R.E.M., On Tour, Revisits Its Roots

By Jon Pareles

  • Oct. 6, 2003

Michael Stipe was half right when he told the audience at Madison Square Garden on Saturday night, ''We're R.E.M. and this is what we do.'' Playing the band's thoughtful, indelible guitar-charged songs on a big tour, with Mr. Stipe hopping and jittering around the stage while Peter Buck dances with his guitars, has become a rare event.

Lately R.E.M. has worked primarily in the studio, where it evolved a different repertory: atmospheric, keyboard-centered songs made for quieter listening. At the Garden, it set most of those songs aside and reclaimed the kind of music that made R.E.M. a cornerstone of alternative rock.

R.E.M. was both a throwback and a forerunner when it got started in 1980 in Athens, Ga. Mr. Buck's guitar lines recalled the Byrds, but the concision and intensity of R.E.M.'s songs held the aftermath of punk. And Mr. Stipe's cryptic lyrics would show the next generation of musicians how to make introspection rock.

In a 21st-century pop sphere of hip-hop and pop-punk, R.E.M. now sounds almost rootsy, tied to its Southern heritage. When Mike Mills, the band's bassist, sang ''(Don't Go Back to) Rockville,'' the arrangement pushed toward country. But compared with the folk-rock resurgence and alt-country wave it anticipated, R.E.M. is still lean and unsentimental, exploring private associations without seeming too self-absorbed. And Mr. Stipe, 43, still looks toned and graceful with his shirt off.

The stage backdrop was glittery, with giant portraits of the band members done in sequins. But the music was genuine. Onstage R.E.M. is now filled out by Ken Stringfellow and Scott McCaughey on keyboards and guitars and Bill Rieflin on drums. (Bill Berry, R.E.M.'s founding drummer, left the band in 1997 after a brain aneurysm.) They didn't play a rote set of hits, though the two-hour performance included songs like ''The One I Love,'' ''Man on the Moon'' and ''Losing My Religion.'' R.E.M. also reclaimed more pensive ones like ''Country Feedback'' and ''Find the River'' and slowly gathering rockers from recent albums like ''Walk Unafraid'' and ''She Just Wants to Be,'' which set loose Mr. Buck's psychedelic side.

Mr. Stipe continues to ponder ''Life and How to Live It,'' the title of a hurtling 1985 song in the set. In his weary yet tenacious voice he sang character portraits, lover's regrets, elegies, reminiscences, moral reflections and political complaints. He sang ''The Final Straw,'' R.E.M.'s Appalachian-tinged 2003 song protesting the war in Iraq, which insists, ''I don't believe and never did that two wrongs make a right.'' And ''Bad Day,'' the band's upbeat new single, mentions a ''Teflon whitewashed presidency'' and repeats, ''We're sick of being jerked around.''

R.E.M. is doing what is usually one of the least fulfilling career maneuvers for a long-running band: touring to promote a retrospective album of hits and rarities baited with a few new songs, ''In Time'' (Warner Brothers), due for release on Oct. 28. (The other new song, ''Animal,'' harked back to the Beatles' ''Taxman.'') R.E.M. plans to release a new album next year. But for a performance as strong as Saturday's set, any reason is good enough.

Sparklehorse, the opening band, worked close to the minor-key folk-rock territory of R.E.M. and Neil Young. Mark Linkous, its leader, sang in a high, pained voice about perpetual despair and longing. His latest band stripped away the electronic encrustations of Sparklehorse's albums to reveal the pithy rockers within.
