Czech It Out ( TV show set in the Czech Republic )

Spoken in Czech, a plus for our little Slovak family , with English subtitles. The 8 part TV series follows a Czech foodie slash actor and his daughter, as they go around the Czech Republic. This series makes it even more relatable for us since the stars of the show can only visit towns and cities on a limited time, which means they are not traveling full time.

For those of us who work full time , have children ,  and travel part time, we want to show the world that this type of travel is indeed doable. We tend to have the comfort of having a home base, a steady income stream coming in, and a routine for our kid whenever he’s not traveling.

Lukas, the host, is showing the foodie side of the Czech Republic as well as activities, sights, and other interesting areas in the cities and towns that he visits. Of course he does this while he is with his teenage daughter. A bit different than traveling with a toddler, but traveling with children is definitely very rewarding.

This is one of our favorite travel shows, and we’re lucky that it is available on HBO Max.

White Lotus ( TV show set in Hawaii and Italy )

A purely fictional TV series, the White Lotus is an ensemble show based in a high end resort in Hawaii. The series was filmed at the Four Seasons Maui at Wailea, so all the exterior shots you see on screen are based on an actual hotel.

The story revolves around the guests and the employees of the White Lotus, with the start of the first episode opening to a death that happened in the hotel, with you trying to figure out who could have died. The series is coming back for another season, set in Italy, filming at the Four Seasons San Domenico Palace. It is an absolutely beautiful hotel, so we can’t wait to see what the second season has on offer. Jennifer Coolidge will be back and is reprising her character in season 2.

Flying over the Caribbean

As the name of the TV series suggests, the main character is a flight attendant, so there is no shortage of international and domestic airport, hotel, and even sights throughout the show’s episodes. The first season is mostly a thriller and a mystery, as the main character is dragged into the brutal murder of one of her business class passengers after she sleeps with him in Bangkok.

The first season is based on a book of the same name, The Flight Attendant, by Chris Bohjalian. Some parts of the first season feel a bit stretched and slow, with some plot holes here and there. Not sure what season 2 has in offer since the entire death of Alex Sokolov is the main arc of the book and the first season, but we’re hopeful season 2 will still show lots of travel!

HBO seems to be the main distributor of any CNN originals, so Parts Unknown is available to stream on HBO Max. Anthony Bourdain is not your usual travel guide, but he does show a different side to a city or a place based on his connections with the locals and for food.

Some of the episodes should have a trigger warning, so for those who can be a bit squeamish or get triggered by animal slaughter (which is shown in some of the episodes), please watch the show with someone. It would help if there was a warning before every episode for those who are sensitive, but there’s none.

Nevertheless, if you still want to travel and “try” the different cuisines of the world without leaving the comfort of your home,  the TV series is definitely worth watching. As they say – you can live vicariously through others!

If you’re a fan of mysteries and know of Agatha Christie, the story is one of a few set in a different country! The movie is amazing – showing lots of famous Egyptian temples and making you feel like you are on a river cruise along the Nile. However, there’s murder that happens on board, so another challenge is figuring out who the murderer is before the end of the movie!

The book is better than the movie, but the movie has the added plus of actually taking you to places visually! Hercule Poirot’s accent is also fun to listen to!

An oldie but goodie TV show. The first season follows a series of murders that happened in London where the murderer seems to be imitating the infamous Jack the Ripper, but in the late 2000s.

I personally love the cut scenes where they show various buildings around London and even say streets and squares that are relevant to the story.

There are 4 seasons of Whitechapel, with only 3 episodes each. Each episode is only around 45 minutes so they are easy to digest and binge.

Statue of Liberty, New York City

An HBO original, written by Julian Fellowes, the mastermind behind Downton Abbey. The story follows a nouveau riche family in New York, based on the Vanderbilt family as they navigate around the old rich society that dominated the city.

Even though this is a period piece, some of the places they visit in New York still stand. The buildings are still there but instead of one family living in a house the size of a city block, has been divided into condos or apartments instead. Central Park is still there and welcoming people from various places as it stands proud in the middle of the city.

TV Shows or Films that Inspire Travel on HBO Max

Fans of these shows make it a point to visit filming sites, and we do have to admit some of their locations are breathtaking, having been to a few of them. Here are the TV shows or the films that inspire travel available on HBO Max.

Platform 9 3/4 - King's Cross Station London

Who doesn’t love the Harry Potter franchise? If you end up going to the UK, people end up booking Harry Potter location tours, which includes Leavesden Studios, where there’s a permanent exhibition at the Universal Lot. Within London, there are plenty of Potter places you can visit, from Leadenhall Market, Platform 9 ¾ in King’s Cross, the Millennium Bridge, Tottenham Court Road, and St Paul’s Cathedral. These are just some of the places you can visit, and our post is not a comprehensive guide to the locations – those are just a quick Google away!

Make a trip to the various cities and towns that they shot on location and you’ll see the beauty of the UK as well as imagining yourself in the wizarding world of Harry Potter itself. Make it a part of your bucket list to visit locations if you want – anything to get you out of the chair and experience the sights yourself!

Also, the books are amazing, and when compared with the movies, they are mostly true to the book. However, the Fantastic Beast series does not have an accompanying book series, and mostly rely on the movies to tell the story.

However, if you do go to the Wizarding World in Islands of Adventure and Universal Studios in Orlando, Florida, you can experience the set yourself and get corresponding merchandise as well!

Check out our Orlando posts here:

  • An Orlando New Years Weekend Getaway
  • Orlando’s Chocolate Kingdom (Review)

Game of Thrones

Game of Thrones is a bit different where the cast seem to have shot in different countries. From the old city of Dubrovnik in Croatia, to an island off the Basque region of Spain called Gaztelugatxe, to the Dark Hedges in Ireland, there’s plenty to see and explore if you watch the TV series.

Aside from looking at the locations, the TV show is highly entertaining with lots of plot twists, action, and drama. There are a lot of character’s to remember though!

There is a book series that was the premise of the TV series, so if you are a reader and like more detail on the world, then pick them up too!

Travel Shows on HBO Max

Stanley Tucci travels to Italy to try and show the unique food that’s available in various regions of Italy. Along the way, he shows how the food has been sourced, unique places, and everything Italian in particular. The host is Italian-American, so he definitely knows what he’s talking about.

We’ve been drooling at the food and street scenes he had in Italy, it was making us so jealous and miss travel even more. A majority of the episodes had been filmed during the pandemic, so it was kind of great to compare what it was like pre-pandemic on 2 episodes vs post pandemic. Sadly, they took this out of HBO Max, but added it to the list in case it does go back.

And there you have it, some travel shows on HBO Max. While this list is not as comprehensive, we hope it may have helped you in your armchair travel and inspired you to visit the sights that these shows were showcasing.

For you have any other shows that you feel we should add to the list? Feel free to list them in the comments below and we will check them out. We will include them if we feel they are entertaining and informative enough to inspire travel through the show!

‘Conan O’Brien Must Go’ Travel Series Gets Premiere Date On Max

Stream it or skip it: ‘the reluctant traveler with eugene levy’ season 2 on apple tv+, where the sardonic ‘schitt’s creek’ star travels around europe, stream it or skip it: ‘on the roam’ on max, jason momoa’s indulgent, endearing travel series, stream it or skip it: ‘james may: our man in india’ on prime video, where the wry ‘grand tour’ host makes his way across the subcontinent, 7 festive christmas episodes to stream on hulu this holiday season.

The new travel series Conan O’Brien Must Go has finally set a premiere date on Max .

The project, which will premiere on April 18, was first announced during Warner Bros. Discovery ’s upfronts presentation last year.

O’Brien announced the news of when the show’s four episodes will be debuting on the platform during a fireside chat at SXSW on Saturday with comedian Nick Kroll .

The show, which is based on O’Brien’s popular podcast “Conan O’Brien Needs a Fan,” is narrated by filmmaker Werner Herzog .

On the podcast, O’Brien has conversations with listeners from around the world, and he follows suit with the Max series as he meets up with fans in Norway, Thailand, Argentina, and Ireland.

Conan O’Brien Must Go is produced by Conaco and executive produced by O’Brien and Jeff Ross . O’Brien had previously revealed that the show would take between a week and 10 days to film in any country.

“There are funny people all over the globe and they all have their own rhythm,” O’Brien said. “Everyone in Ireland is a comedian… I love talking to people who don’t know who I am, don’t care. I’m a connection junkie, I like to connect with people. I think this show is my way to get my fix.”

Conan O’Brien Must Go is not O’Brien’s first travel show, as his show Conan Without Borders visited 13 countries and won an Emmy during its run on TBS .

When his self-titled TBS late-night show Conan ended in June 2021 after 11 seasons, the comedian had signed a deal to launch a new weekly variety series for HBO Max the following year, but it has yet to materialize.

As for the new show, O’Brien says he has a lot more time for creative flexibility than he did for Conan Without Borders . “The look can get more cinematic,” he said. “We get to use drones and we have the money to use costumes. We have a lot more we can do than when we were in the field on a week off.”

"Conan O'Brien Must Go"

Conan O’Brien’s long-awaited move to HBO Max — well, make that now just “Max” — is finally happening. Max has officially ordered “Conan O’Brien Must Go,” a four-episode international travel series currently in production. Scroll down to watch a first look.

The series was set to be announced Wednesday at Warner Bros. Discovery’s upfront presentation. According to Max, the new show will follow O’Brien as he travels the globe visiting people he has met through his podcast “Conan O’Brien Needs a Fan” (in which he chats with listeners from around the globe). In a press release, O’Brien quipped, “My fans around the globe never asked me to visit them, so I did.”

But 2022 came and went with no sign of a new O’Brien show. Or, for that matter, any new installments of his travel specials, “Conan Without Borders,” which had also aired on TBS.

In February 2022, on his “Conan Needs a Friend” podcast, O’Brien said development of the new show had been slow, but the idea was to focus on remotes. “When I’m with real people in real situations, that’s exactly the kind of stuff I’m thinking about and want to do,” he said.

When Variety last asked HBO/HBO Max CEO of content Casey Bloys in February about the status of O’Brien, he said conversations were ongoing with HBO programming exec VP Nina Rosenstein about a project.

That’s what came to be as “Conan O’Brien Must Go,” which will be exec produced by O’Brien and Jeff Ross, and come from O’Brien’s Conaco shingle.

Said Rosenstein: “Conan is a national treasure…at least that’s what he keeps telling me. It’s been an absolute dream to work with him, Jeff, and the whole Conaco team. They’re everything you’d hope for – insanely smart, ridiculously funny, and nicer than they’d probably want to admit.”

Since the end of “Conan,” O’Brien has focused on building his “Team Coco” media company, with a focus on a growing podcast empire. That includes “Conan O’Brien Needs a Friend” (with Conan O’Brien, Sona Movsesian and Matt Gourley), which has amassed more than 427 million downloads. Team Coco, which was acquired by SiriusXM in 2022, includes digital and branded content, live events, merchandise and other production. Its podcast stable also includes “May I Elaborate?” (with JB Smoove and Miles Grose), “Parks and Recollection” (with Rob Lowe and Alan Yang), “Scam Goddess” (with Laci Mosley), “Why Won’t You Date Me?” (with Nicole Byer), “The Three Questions” (with Andy Richter) and “Inside Conan” (with Mike Sweeney & Jessie Gaskell).

Here’s a first look at “Conan O’Brien Must Go”:

Conan O’Brien ‘s new streaming series looks an awful lot like Conan Without Borders — not that there’s anything wrong with that. Conan O’Brien’s Farewell to Late Night: The 6 Best Moments With Will Ferrell, Jack Black and… Homer Simpson? View List

Warner Bros. Discovery has unveiled Conan O’Brien Must Go , an international travel show for Max that will feature the former late-night host visiting new friends he’s met via his podcast, Conan O’Brien Needs a Fan . Watch a sneak peek above.

“My fans around the globe never asked me to visit them, so I did,” O’Brien said in a statement Wednesday. Added HBO programming EVP Nina Rosenstein: “Conan is a national treasure… at least that’s what he keeps telling me. It’s been an absolute dream to work with him, [executive producer] Jeff [Ross] and the whole Conaco team. They’re everything you’d hope for – insanely smart, ridiculously funny, and nicer than they’d probably want to admit.”

Wednesday’s series order comes nearly three years after it was first announced that O’Brien would leave his post as late-night TV’s elder statesman and resurface on HBO Max with a weekly variety series. At the time, it was also said that Conan Without Borders — a series of primetime specials that took O’Brien to more than a dozen countries between 2015 and 2019 — would continue, even after his eponymous TBS talk show came to an end in June 2021.

But in an October 2022 interview with AdWeek , O’Brien revealed that no such variety series was in the works, and he had not yet pitched HBO Max. It was only in recent weeks, when the Team Coco Instagram account shared a series of photos of O’Brien in Bangkok, Thailand, that fans began to speculate that something new was in the works. Now we have our answer.

Conan O’Brien Must Go ‘s first season will be comprised of four episodes. A premiere date has not yet been revealed. Are you looking forward to O’Brien’s streaming debut?

Welcome back Conan!!

Conan O’Brien Needs a Fan is a separate podcast (but still in the ‘friend’ feed) where Conan talks to a fan for 20-30 minutes.

I was so scared Conan had been screwed out of a show again…Great to she him back.

Wonderful! I can’t wait to watch it!

Conan is my absolute favorite and I can not wait for these!

So glad he’s in a show on HBO/MAX. He always makes me laugh.

Oh my god, this looks great! I have missed Conan O’Brien. My only wish was that somehow Andy Richter would have tagged along with him. I love those two, together. “In the year 2000…..”

Conan O’Brien is back in business with Warner Bros. Discovery.

The former late night host has set Conan O’Brien Must Go , a four-episode international travel series that sees him return to the conglomerate after Conan signed off in 2021 following an 11-year run.

The new series, which is already in production, will see O’Brien travel across the globe to visit new people he has met through his podcast Conan O’Brien Needs a Fan .

A travel series is not new ground for O’Brien, who previously won an Emmy for his TBS series Conan Without Borders (which now streams on Max ). He has visited 13 countries and his podcast has nearly 430 million downloads since its launch in 2018.

O’Brien first previewed the Max travel show on his podcast early last year, noting that he had hoped to return to doing remote segments à la Conan Without Borders .

Max (which is being rebranded from HBO Max ) first announced plans to reteam with O’Brien in late 2020 when corporate sibling TBS announced that Conan would end in 2021 and that the veteran of late night would segue to a weekly variety series for the streamer.

50 Best Travel Shows Of All Time (& How To Watch Them)

Anthony Bourdain clip from "Roadrunner"

We may receive a commission on purchases made from links.

Most of us can't reasonably travel all of the time. Thankfully, we can live vicariously through our screens when we cannot be globetrotting ourselves. Travel shows are a dime a dozen, mainly because many of us would rather explore than deal with our responsibilities. But how do you know which shows are worth your time? That depends mainly on your tastes and interests, but we can provide some solid starting points.

From celebrities heading their own adventurous docuseries to food-loving vagabonds visiting remote destinations, travel shows can show us scenes and cultures we would otherwise have no concept of. In fact, television often inspires travel, and watching world wanderers eat their way through exotic destinations is a great way to help plan your next trip. These 50 series are some of the best TV has to offer, and even if you don't make it through all of them, you may find a gem that piques your particular interest.

50. Nomad with Carlton McCoy

Classically trained chef and expert sommelier Carlton McCoy seeks out the best in international cuisine, music, and art in the CNN series "Nomad with Carlton McCoy." Premiering in May 2022, McCoy travels everywhere in the travel series, from the overlooked pleasures of Mississippi to the corners of Ghana. For McCoy, the show's focus lies in adventures and delights found away from the well-worn paths frequented by tourists. Instead, he enjoys savoring hometown favorites from local populations. What McCoy may lack in experience and poise, he and "Nomad" make up for with its premise to go behind the scenes of some of the world's most recognizable locales.

The first "Nomad with Carlton McCoy" season is available to stream on  Prime Video with Discovery+.

49. Down to Earth with Zac Efron

The world is a beautiful place, and it's easy to showcase such on film. This is why a travel show has to be about more than just pretty scenery, and "Down to Earth with Zac Efron" delivers in a big way. The series puts a highly informative spin on the genre by taking viewers on whirlwind journeys worldwide in search of health secrets. We're not talking about avocado toast or juice cleanses, either.

Efron and wellness expert Darin Olien visit destinations to learn about topics like renewable energy, superfoods, and water quality. Have you ever heard of a water sommelier? The experts know a thing or two about what kind of water makes our bodies happy, and a "Down to Earth" episode in France consults one of the few professionals in existence. The series also has episodes on a seed bank stocked for the end of the world, Iceland's Blue Lagoon, and the Amazon rainforest.

Although "Down to Earth" earned Zac Efron a Daytime Emmy, lack of viewership caused the series to be canceled quickly. It had one season at Netflix and was picked up for another at The CW, only to be on the chopping block two episodes later. Lack of quantity does not mean lack of quality, though, and the "High School Musical" star's travel show is a solid viewing.

You can watch "Down to Earth with Zach Efron" on Netflix and The CW .

48. The World's Most Amazing Vacation Rentals

Sometimes, a typical hotel on vacation doesn't cut it, with intrepid travelers opting for more unique and luxurious digs during their stay abroad. The Netflix original series "The World's Most Amazing Vacation Rentals" explores everything from treehouses to alpaca farms to rent worldwide. Hosted by Megan Batoon, Jo Franco, and Luis D. Ortiz, the show reminds viewers that far more than cheap motels and chain hotels are available to make a vacation even more authentic and unique. While some of the rentals visited on the show run on the pricier side, these are balanced out with more cost-effective rentals for travelers not looking to shell out top dollar on accommodations.

"The World's Most Amazing Vacation Rentals" is available to stream on  Netflix .

47. Stanley Tucci: Searching for Italy

Academy Award-nominated actor Stanley Tucci reconnects with his ancestral roots in the CNN travel series "Stanley Tucci: Searching for Italy." Premiering in 2021, the show has Tucci visit different regions in Italy to learn more about the local cuisine, culture, and history in a sun-soaked tour of the Mediterranean country. Though the major tourist centers of Italy are among the destinations in Tucci's tour, the host takes the time to explore restaurants and locations off the beaten track to reveal a more authentic Italian experience. Buoyed by Tucci's understated yet quietly charismatic presence, "Searching for Italy" has been nominated for multiple Emmy Awards, winning two for its achievement in nonfiction television.

Available to purchase and rent through most digital retailers, "Stanley Tucci: Searching for Italy" is also available to stream on Discovery+ .

46. Mysterious Islands

Accomplished pilot and explorer Kellee Edwards invites viewers to join her on his globe-trotting adventures with the Travel Channel series "Mysterious Islands." Edwards particularly takes an interest in some of the most remote islands on Earth, visiting them with her private seaplane to examine them from above and by foot. A refreshing contrast to the hustle-and-bustle of travel shows revolving around heavily populated locales, "Mysterious Islands" offers a more serene, nature-focused look at isolated getaways. Before hosting "Mysterious Islands," Edwards hosted and published a travel vlog through her website that catapulted her into the public eye.

"Mysterious Islands" is currently available to stream on  fuboTV and Philo .

45. Ride with Norman Reedus

"Cool" is the only way to describe "Ride with Norman Reedus." Cruising on a slew of bikes, "The Boondock Saints" and "The Walking Dead" actor meets up with a different travel partner in each episode to explore the open road of America and international destinations. With six seasons as of 2023, the series has become a lasting one on AMC.

Norman Reedus isn't the first to make a travel show centered on biker culture, so what makes it so unique? His vibe, for one. However, it's also the particular variety that his program offers viewers. Reedus does not stick to just one style or motorcycle manufacturer; he also has many celebrity guests. He has the bikers' seal of approval.

Our ranking methodology

Everyone has that one show they're connected to, whether popular or not. "Best" is always subjective, and your all-time favorite series may not even be something someone else knows exists. That doesn't mean it's any less valid, though. We've tried to keep our personal opinions from this list and instead relied on more tangible elements when compiling our rankings. You'll find some of the most beloved, compelling, and critically acclaimed travel shows — and some you may have never heard of.

A travel show's host can be as important as the places traveled. There's a reason why Anthony Bourdain will always appear on lists like this one. His captivating storytelling capabilities and genuinely raw nature make for compelling TV that viewers resonate with. This kind of grab power shows up throughout our list of picks, with the face and voice of a program helping to boost some of the programs in our rankings.

We've considered the likability of the shows chosen here by scouring reviews from multiple sources, like Reddit, Rotten Tomatoes, and IMDb. We've also factored in the number of seasons and any accolades a show may have been given. A lack of awards certainly doesn't dull a hidden gem's luster, though, so don't be surprised that many shows featured here have gone under the award committees' radar.

Conan O’Brien to Defile the Globe in His New Max Series

Portrait of Hershal Pandya

Conan O’Brien is once again traveling to the far corners of the globe, camera in tow. The host, who previously racked up acclaim and Emmy awards for his Conan Without Borders travel specials, is hoping to re-create the travelogue magic with his new Max series, Conan O’Brien Must Go . “Earth: To truly appreciate the astounding grandeur, sometimes you must defile it,” a familiar-sounding German voice proclaims atop footage of picturesque landscapes in the trailer. “Behold the defiler.” Cut to: O’Brien in full Viking cosplay, menacingly announcing, “I am Conan the Red,” to camera, then immediately dropping character and asking, “Are my pants falling?” As to the identity of this mysterious German voice-over artist? Reached for comment about whether it is filmmaker Werner Herzog, O’Brien replied, “I can neither confirm nor deny the voice in question.”

Conan O’Brien Must Go will mark O’Brien’s anticipated return to television following the end of his TBS late-night show, Conan , in 2021. In the meantime, he’s kept busy hosting the podcasts Conan O’Brien Needs a Friend and Conan O’Brien Needs a Fan , the latter of which forms the basis for this new show. Across four episodes, O’Brien travels to Norway, Thailand, Argentina, and Ireland in a bid to surprise some of the more memorable fans he’s met on the podcast. Naturally, he struggles to take in all manner of cultural phenomena along the way: cheek-kiss greetings, cattle herding, Muay Thai training, the stunning lack of other Irish people named Conan, and more.

Help O’Brien on his mission to popularize the name “Conan” in Ireland by watching all four episodes of Conan O’Brien Must Go when they premiere on Max April 18.

The 30 Best Shows on Max (aka HBO Max) Right Now

Kate Winslet and Matthias Schoenaerts walking out of a conference room past two guards

It may not have the shine it once did , but Max ( previously HBO Max ) is still home to some of the best TV shows of the past 25 years, from  The Sopranos and  The Wire to  Game of Thrones  and  The Leftovers .

Max has gotten into the original content game too, with highly acclaimed series like  Hacks ,  Station Eleven , and  The Staircase ( the owl did it !). So even if you've watched all of the HBO classics, there's more to devour.

Whether you're a longtime fan of the “it's not TV” cable network or a Max newbie trying to figure out where to start, the shows below should give you plenty upon which to feast your eyes.

Looking for more recommendations? Head to WIRED’s guide to the  best TV shows on Netflix , the  best TV shows on Amazon Prime , the  best TV shows on Disney+ , and the  best TV shows on Hulu .

In The Regime , Kate Winslet does that thing that only Kate Winslet can really do: Play someone who is cold, calculating, and highly unlikeable yet immensely watchable. The Titanic star plays Chancellor Elena Vernham, a ruthless dictator who seems to be losing her hold over her people. So she turns to Herbert Zubak (Matthias Schoenaerts), her water diviner, for advice and companionship. But it turns out the former soldier might have some pretty lofty power goals of his own.

The Girls on the Bus

It’s hardly surprising that an election year brings with it an uptick in political content, which helps explain the timing on this new limited series. The show is inspired by series co-creator Amy Chozick’s 2018 memoir, Chasing Hillary: Ten Years, Two Presidential Campaigns, and One Intact Glass Ceiling , about her near-decade spent following Hillary Clinton’s quest for the presidency. In the series, the political campaign is a fictional one, but the bonds forged between four female journalists who are on the trail of the next president are rooted in reality—and very much of the moment.

In 1993, American journalist Jake Adelstein landed a job at the Tokyo-based Yomiuri Shimbun as the newspaper’s first non-Japanese staff writer—a position he held for a dozen years. Nearly 30 years later, in 2022, Max turned Adelstein’s life into a slick crime drama that sees the young journalist (played by Ansel Elgort) forge a deep connection with high-ranking members of the Tokyo Metropolitan Police Department, who allow him to get dangerously close to the violence and corruption that exist within the city. The series’ second season is currently airing, and will wrap up in early April, with all episodes available to stream.

Murder in Boston: Roots, Rampage & Reckoning

Is Boston the most racist city in America? That’s the question Jason Hehir—a Beantown native and the Emmy-winning director behind The Last Dance —poses in this three-part docuseries that revisits the murder of Carol Stuart. In the fall of 1989, Chuck Stewart called 911 to report that he and his wife, who was pregnant, had been carjacked by a Black man, who shot them both. Carol did not survive, but Charles did. And the crime ignited a months-long manhunt throughout the city with police having little more to go on than the color of the alleged assailant’s skin. Eventually, Willie Bennett—a 39-year-old who had been arrested on separate charges—became the chief suspect and was presumed guilty by mostly everyone, including the media. Until an unlikely witness came forward to reveal the truth of the crime. This series, which is part true-crime mystery and part social-justice documentary, triumphs in revealing how the sins of a city’s past can continue to haunt it decades later.

True Detective: Night Country

Did you take our advice and watch Deadloch and now you want more of that, but far darker and more creepy? We have just the solution: True Detective: Night Country . Truth be told, this anthology series has had a rough go. Following a wildly successful first season that crashed Max’s predecessor , HBO Go, and had everyone talking about how time is a flat circle, the series’ second and third installments failed to capture the same momentum. Night Country is a return to form . It stars Jodie Foster and Kali Reis as a pair of investigators trying to uncover a conspiracy and solve a series of bizarre murders. Mysterious symbols are also involved. Yes, that’s pretty much the plot of every season of True Detective , but this season has corpsicles. As with all of those previous iterations, the less you know at the start, the better. Let it pull you in, and never let go.

Curb Your Enthusiasm

“I really did the best under the circumstances of a person who hates people and yet had to be amongst them,” Larry David says in the trailer for the 12th—and final (yes, really)—season of Curb Your Enthusiasm . David—both the real-life comedian and the semi-fictionalized version of himself he plays on TV—has been dipping in and out of our lives for more than 20 years now. And he continually exceeded audience expectations with each new season of Curb , most recently by adding Tracey Ullman to the cast as councilwoman/love interest Irma Kostroski. Even though he cocreated Seinfeld , one of the most game-changing TV series of all time, it’s Curb Your Enthusiasm to which he’ll always be more closely linked. Pretty good for a social assassin. Pretty, pretty good.

In the nearly 20 years since her death in 2004, Julia Child has gotten the biopic treatment with Julie & Julia (2009) and was the subject of Julie Cohen and Betsy West’s documentary Julia (2021). In 2022, Happy Valley ’s Sarah Lancashire stepped into Child’s toque to recount the earliest days of her career as a cookbook author and TV chef innovator, and it makes for one tasty dramedy. In January, we learned that the series’ second season—which wrapped up in December—will be its last; all episodes are available to stream now.

Insecure impresario Issa Rae is the brains behind this laugh-out-loud comedy, which follows Mia Knight (KaMillion) and Shawna Clark (Aida Osman), two former high school friends and struggling rappers trying to make it on the Miami music scene. Ultimately, they decide to join forces to form a group, double their chances of success, and use social media as their launching pad—all with mixed results. As much as the series is about music, at its heart it’s really about the unending possibilities of youthdom and the beauty of women supporting women.

The Gilded Age

While it hasn’t made quite the splash that Downton Abbey did, Julian Fellowes’ latest period piece is just as decadent—and really came into its own with its second season. In this case, the drama moves stateside to document the struggle between New York City’s old-money aristocrats and the vulgar new-money types attempting to infiltrate their social circles. There’s also plenty of the Upstairs, Downstairs -type drama that Fellowes is known for, with the servants who cater to Manhattan’s elite playing a big part of the story too. Somewhere in the middle of it all is Marian Brook (Louisa Jacobson), a young woman attempting to navigate a world she only belongs to by proxy. Christine Baranski, Carrie Coon, and Cynthia Nixon lead a stellar cast.

Jessie (Rose Matafeo) is a twentysomething New Zealander attempting to make ends meet as a nanny in London. One New Year’s Eve, she has a drunken one-night stand, only to sober up and realize she just slept with Tom Kapoor (Nikesh Patel), a major movie star. But what was presumably a one-off encounter turns into much more over time in this charming romcom series, which is a little bit like Notting Hill —only drunker.

Our Flag Means Death

Rhys Darby and Taika Waititi do what Rhys Darby and Taika Waititi do best as two very different kinds of pirates who cross paths in the 1700s. Darby plays Stede Bonnet, a fictionalized version of a very real member of the landed gentry whose version of a midlife crisis led to him abandon his family and hit the high seas for a swashbuckling adventure. Waititi, meanwhile, plays the infamous Blackbeard, who learns of Bonnet and seeks him out. What begins as a kind of mentorship eventually becomes the gay pirate action-comedy series you never knew you needed.

How to With John Wilson

If Steven Wright and Nathan Fielder decided to create a YouTube channel of how-to tutorials on topics like putting up scaffolding and covering furniture in plastic, it might look a lot like How to With John Wilson . So it probably comes as no surprise that Fielder is an executive producer of the series, which follows Wilson as he attempts to uncover the secrets of such universal dilemmas as how to make small talk. Wilson’s surprising mix of earnestness and deadpan delivery make the series surprising, enlightening, and extremely strange.

Winning Time: The Rise of the Lakers Dynasty

John C. Reilly stars as Lakers owner Jerry Buss in a performance that would make Reed Rothchild, his Boogie Nights character, proud. This fast-paced period sports drama, which is based on Jeff Pearlman’s book Showtime , chronicles exactly what it promises in the title: the rise of the Los Angeles Lakers, who ruled the NBA throughout much of the ’80s—thanks in large part to owner Buss and rookie player Magic Johnson (Quincy Isaiah). Though it has been lauded by critics, Winning Time has seemed to fly oddly under the radar. This might explain why it was recently axed by HBO. But it’s still period filmmaking and high-stakes sports drama at its finest.

Project Greenlight: A New Generation

In 2001, just three years after Good Will Hunting made them bona fide Oscar winners, Matt Damon and Ben Affleck launched Project Greenlight, a competition that gave aspiring filmmakers the chance to make a real, live movie—which begat Project Greenlight , a reality series that chronicled the ups and downs (mostly downs) of that experience. While the competition was better known for the TV series it spawned versus the movies that it produced, it’s now more than 20 years later. And, as new mentors Issa Rae, Kumail Nanjiani, and Gina Prince-Bythewood quickly realize, it’s all still a bit of a nightmare. Gray Matter , the movie that was created from the competition’s rebirth, is also streaming on Max, so you can judge for yourself whether things are different this time around.

Full Circle

When a teen goes missing in New York City, the lives—and lies—of several seemingly unconnected characters find a way to intertwine in this twisty crime series from the mind of filmmaker Ed Solomon ( Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure ). What at first might seem like a straightforward story of two bereaved parents (Claire Danes and Timothy Olyphant) attempting to deal with the kidnapping of their son becomes much more complicated in the hands of Steven Soderbergh, who produced and directs all six episodes of this limited series, where nothing is what it seems.

Last Call: When a Serial Killer Stalked Queer New York

This four-part docuseries, based on Elon Green’s book Last Call: A True Story of Love, Lust and Murder in Queer New York , looks at the murders of several gay men in the early 1990s. Set against the backdrop of rising homophobia during the AIDS crisis, director Anthony Coronna’s doc talks to the family members of those killed and the LGBTQ+ community advocates who pushed law enforcement to investigate the deaths happening in their community.

The Other Two

Chasedreams (Case Walker) is a 13-year-old internet icon whose overnight rise to global stardom has become the sole focus of his mom (Molly Shannon). Chase’s older siblings, however, are having a much harder time finding success. Brother Cary (Drew Tarver) is an aspiring actor who can’t even land the part of “Man at Party Who Smells Fart,” while sister Brooke (Heléne Yorke) is just trying to figure out who and what she wants to be. All three seasons of the series, which was cocreated by former SNL head writers Chris Kelly and Sarah Schneider, are available to binge.

No one seemed particularly wowed when HBO announced that Bill Hader and Alec Berg were cocreating a series in which Hader would play a hitman with a conscience who attempts to go straight. But what might sound like a played-out trope has  taken on new dimensions of humor, darkness, humanity, and plain old weirdness, with its recently concluded final season serving as a brilliant crescendo of all of that dark weirdness mixed in with a little time jump. Barry Berkman (Hader) is a traumatized marine whose newfound apathy toward the world and the very act of living makes him perfectly suited to work as a gun for hire. When a job takes him to Los Angeles, Barry stumbles upon an acting class led by Gene Cousineau (Henry Winkler, in what may be the role that finally supplants Fonzie as his most memorable), a failed but charismatic mentor. But transitioning back into the real world isn’t without consequences for Barry, who can spend an entire episode being  hunted by a pint-size martial arts master . All four seasons of the Emmy-winning series, each one better than the next, are available to stream in full.

Love & Death

Elizabeth Olsen seamlessly transitions from part-time superhero to cold-blooded seductress in this retelling of the story of Candy Montgomery—a churchgoing wife and mother who turns murderous after having an affair with a fellow parishioner (the always excellent Jesse Plemons). If the plot sounds familiar, that might be because it’s based on the true story of a murder that took place in Texas in 1980. Or perhaps it’s because Hulu got there first with its own limited series, Candy , starring Jessica Biel as the femme fatale.

Media empires run by dysfunctional families may rise and fall, but we’ll always have  Succession . The Emmy-winning series concluded its four-season run in early 2023, but its legacy as one of the most surprising pieces of prestige TV will be felt for decades to come (especially after what happened at Shiv’s wedding … then “Connor’s Wedding,” not to mention on the balcony or in the hand-hold seen ’round the world). At a time when TV shows about rich people, real or imagined, are in ample supply,  Succession  manages to stand out by being as bitingly funny as it is painfully tragic. The jet-black family dramedy chronicles the Roy family and the people/cronies/tall men who orbit them, all of whom seem to be angling for control of Waystar RoyCo, the family-run global media conglomerate—whether by succession (get it?) or more hostile means. Think of it as  King Lear meets Rupert Murdoch’s News Corp., only funny. (Unless you’re invited to play a game of Boar on the Floor.)

The Last of Us

The Last of Us managed to succeed where Netflix’s  Resident Evil (which was canceled after one season) and other live-action TV shows based on video games failed—by being really, really good. Craig Mazin ( Chernobyl ) and the video game’s original director,  Neil Druckmann , cocreated the post-apocalyptic drama, in which one grizzled survivor ( Pedro Pascal ) is tasked with smuggling a smart-mouthed teenager (Bella Ramsey) who could be the key to finding a cure for the fungal infection-fueled pandemic that has turned most of America into zombie-like creatures. Props to everyone for generating so much interest in the (very real and parasitic)  Cordyceps fungus —because  fungi nerds like TV, too .

A Black Lady Sketch Show

In 2015, Robin Thede made television history when she was named head writer for  The Nightly Show with Larry Wilmore —making her the first Black woman to hold the head writer position on a late-night talk show. Four years later, she revolutionized the TV landscape once again when she gathered up a group of her funniest friends—including Ashley Nicole Black, (future  Abbott Elementary creator) Quinta Brunson, Gabrielle Dennis, and Skye Townsend—and created  A Black Lady Sketch Show , the first sketch comedy written, produced, and starring Black women. The four-season series has brought such A-list names as Angela Bassett out as guest stars with its no-holds-barred humor, and the entire series is available to stream now.

Costello Jones (Daisy May Cooper) is an aspiring novelist and working-class mom who isn’t always successful at making ends meet for herself and her wise-beyond-her-years daughter, Iris (Fleur Tashjian). So Costello is regularly forced to call upon her violence-prone—but wealthy—gay best friend, Selby (Jack Farthing), to unstick them from whatever jams they’ve managed to get caught in. The series is billed as a black comedy, which it definitely is, although the moments between the levity are sometimes so dark and raw that even the frothiest bits carry weight. This darkly nuanced and sometimes surreal meditation on class, sex, dysfunction, and the varying definitions of “family” makes for a compulsively watchable series.

Abbott Elementary

Abbott Elementary creator/star Quinta Brunson ( A Black Lady Sketch Show ) has garnered all sorts of accolades with this ABC series and even managed to create streaming deals with both Max and  Hulu . The surprise hit follows the lives of a group of teachers who are working at one of the most woefully underfunded public schools in America while doing their best to inspire students. Yes, it all sounds very earnest—and it is—but it’s also the kind of funny we don’t see much of on network TV anymore. The series only just premiered its third season but has managed to rack up enough awards (Emmys, Critics Choice, Indie Spirit, and beyond) to fill a school trophy case.

The White Lotus

Knowing that Jennifer Coolidge stars in the first two seasons of  The White Lotus (the only actor to move locations with the series) is reason enough for many people to tune in. While it was originally imagined as a one-off series from the brilliantly screwed-up mind (in a good way) of Mike White—who cocreated the sadly overlooked  Enlightenment with Laura Dern, another HBO show you should check out—it has since morphed into a full-on franchise. The series dives below the surface of the seemingly fabulous lives of deep-pocketed guests who can afford to stay at one of the five-star resorts of the title’s locations (first Hawaii, then Sicily, with Thailand scheduled for season 3), and the people who trip over themselves to serve their every need. Somewhere in between, murder always seems to end up on the menu. As season 3 won’t premiere until 2025, you’ve got plenty of time to catch up—and you’ll want to. HBO has already announced that Carrie Coon, Walton Goggins, Parker Posey, Patrick Schwarzenegger, and Aimee Lou Wood will all appear in the next installment.

I May Destroy You

Michaela Coel is a creative force of nature who delivered on what she promised with the title of this limited series, which she created, wrote, directed, and stars in. Arabella (Coel) is a Londoner living the millennial dream with a thriving writing career, thanks in part to her celebrity as a social media influencer. But Arabella’s Insta-perfect life begins to unravel when, after a night out with friends, she begins to recall—in fragments—being sexually assaulted. Eventually, the need to piece together exactly what happened to her, and who did it, consumes her completely and the past comes knocking at her door.

The Sex Lives of College Girls

Mindy Kaling cocreated this Max series, which puts a new spin on the teenage sex comedy—one in which the women are fully in charge. Nerdy Kimberly (Pauline Chalamet, yes, Timothée’s sister), aspiring professional funny person Bela (Amrit Kaur), snotty Upper East Sider Leighton (Reneé Rapp), and soccer star/senator’s daughter Whitney (Alyah Chanelle Scott) are four college freshmen randomly thrown together as suitemates. But as they get to know each other, and themselves, their forced cohabitation develops into a true bond—one in which there’s no such thing as TMI and a “naked party” is just one way to unwind after a long week. The series’ third season is expected to premiere in the spring and will be the final go-around for costar/Gen Z icon Reneé Rapp, who announced that she’d be exiting the show to focus on her musical career.

The Rehearsal

Good luck trying to explain what  The Rehearsal  is to anyone who isn’t familiar with Nathan Fielder’s mastery of uncomfortable comedy. What begins as a series in which the awkward star/comedian attempts to help people prepare for big moments in life by rehearsing them until they get it right quickly turns into a bizarre social experiment in which Fielder himself becomes one of the key players. The less you know about it ahead of time, the better. Just be aware that you’ll be encountering people who responded to a Craigslist ad to take part. For more of Fielder’s weird brilliance, all four seasons of  Nathan for You —another kind of  meta-comedy that will force you to repeatedly cover your eyes in vicarious embarrassment—are also streaming on Max.

Avenue Five

Bad timing may have led to the unfortunately early demise of  Avenue 5 , which had filming on its second season delayed, and delayed again, due to Covid-19. But the space-set comedy from the brilliant mind of Armando Iannucci, creator of  Veep (another classic streaming on HBO Max), and its even swearier predecessor,  The Thick of It , is well worth your time, if only to see what could happen when space travel inevitably goes wrong. Hugh Laurie stars as the “captain” of an interplanetary cruise ship, with Josh Gad playing the role of eccentric tech billionaire/huge baby Herman Judd, whose planned eight-week tour of the galaxy turns dire when a gravitational disaster steers the ship off course. The series gets more bonkers as it goes along, and poop plays a massive part in saving thousands of passengers and crew members. Consider yourselves warned—and feel free to laugh at the inanity of it all. Loudly.

The Righteous Gemstones

Danny McBride and HBO are the new Brangelina of television. First they teamed up for the hilariously offensive-for-offense’s sake  Eastbound & Down ; then there was  Vice Principals. The Righteous Gemstones , which McBride created and stars in, is his latest effort to put forth a group of highly unlikeable people and find a way to make you like them even less but still want to keep watching. In this case, it’s a family of televangelists whose real god is greed and power. McBride assembled an all-star cast that includes John Goodman as the family’s patriarch, Adam DeVine and Edi Patterson as the Gemstone children, and national treasure Walton Goggins as Uncle Baby Billy Freeman—a child-star-turned-grifter who has given the series some of its most memorable quotes and moments.

Conan O’Brien Is Finally Coming Back To TV With The Travel Show We’ve Been Waiting For

Jason Tabrys

Conan O’Brien is coming back to television (I know, but if I say he’s coming back to “your device of choice” it sounds weird), visiting Bangkok, getting beat up by a child, sword fighting, and showing off his angelic voice in the tease for Conan O’Brien Must Go , a new show on Max (MAX MAX MAX – through repetition, we’ll surely all get used to saying that instead of HBO Max).

Conan going to Max isn’t a surprise. When he closed the book on his TBS show part of our emotional support infrastructure was the promise that something new was coming between Coco and the streamer… eventually. But then he became a podcast impresario and then Warner Discovery disassociated itself from a lot of projects in various states of being and we didn’t know what the hell was going on. Would it be a variety show (as had been speculated early on, conjuring images of a masturbating bear that also juggles while on a unicycle – no easy feat), a more low-fi chat show that borrowed from the concept of the Conan O’Brien Needs A Friend podcast? Something else entirely? Nothing? But as it turns out, the actual new show sounds like exactly what we should have always assumed it would be — Conan’s hitting the road.

From the press release:

The four-episode series is currently in production and will feature O’Brien visiting new friends he’s met through his podcast, “Conan O’Brien Needs a Fan,” where he dives deep with listeners from across the country and the world.

Sending Conan to far-flung places is an idea that led to some truly classic moments in the early days of Conan’s run on NBC with Late Night. Now I’m going to share clips of some marvelous, evergreen comedy of Conan in Ireland , Toronto , and Houston (Texas isn’t exactly far-flung, but that trip is magic on a silver plate). This eventually evolved into Conan Without Borders one-offs with the TBS show where he visited Cuba, Italy, South Korea, Haiti , and other world spots.

As always, Conan’s curiosity, awkwardness, and ability/willingness to make fun of himself in pursuit of finding the stupid/smart sweet spot paid dividends and these specials became a kind of calling card. The teaser trailer above is a mere snapshot, of course, but it’s obvious that Conan is bringing a lot of the same energy to these new episodes while perhaps tapping into the magic of human connection that can sometimes feel absent from our lives and entertainment. That’s great news, plus, as with his globe-trotting adventures on his TBS show, he’s making a major media company pay for it all. Conan, you shrewd bastard!

Conan O'Brien Sets New Travel Series 'Conan O'Brien Must Go' at Max (Video)

C onan O'Brien is once again going international. The late night legend-turned-podcast host is hitting the road to hang out with fans in his upcoming Max travel show 'Conan O'Brien Must Go,' Warner Bros. Discovery announced Wednesday.

In a sizzle reel for the upcoming four-episode series, O'Brien can be seen knocking on doors of surprised fans from around the world whom he's spoken to on his podcast, "Conan O'Brien Needs a Fan."

"My fans around the globe never asked me to visit them, so I did," O'Brien said in a press release Wednesday.

O'Brien will be heading to Norway, Thailand and other yet-to-be-revealed locations. The show, which is still in production, has yet to set a release date.

"Conan is a national treasure...at least that's what he keeps telling me," Nina Rosenstein, Executive Vice President of Programming at HBO said in a programming note. "It's been an absolute dream to work with him, Jeff, and the whole Conaco team. They're everything you'd hope for - insanely smart, ridiculously funny, and nicer than they'd probably want to admit."

O'Brien, who ended his run on late-night TV nearly two years ago, has kept his fanbase alive and thriving with his popular Team Coco podcast network, led by his flagship show "Conan O'brien Needs a Friend," which can regularly be found near the top of the podcast charts. "Conan O'Brien Needs a Fan," a segment within the podcast, serves as the basis for the upcoming Max series.

This isn't the first time O'Brien has hosted a travel show. From 2015 to 2019, "Conan Without Borders" aired as a series of specials on his TBS late-night show, "Conan." The series followed O'Brien on journeys outside the U.S. as he met with locals and experienced other cultures. The series' production was halted due to the Covid-19 pandemic, and never resumed before his run on "Conan" ended.

Conan O'Brien Must Go: What We Know About The Max Docuseries

Conan's back to bring laughter to the world.

Conan the Red on Conan O'Brien Must Go

  • The Premiere Date
  • What It's About
  • The Trailer
  • Other Things We Know

After nearly three decades of keeping people entertained way past their bedtime, Conan O’Brien ended his run as one of the greatest late night talk show hosts of his time and concluded his self-titled TBS series on June 24, 2021. His momentous exit came with the promise that he would return to television in the form of a Max original TV show that would go untitled and under wraps for years, keeping his biggest fans in eager anticipation. Now, we finally know what the comedian has in store following the formal announcement of Conan O’Brien Must Go .

A few questions that still remain regarding this new project include: what kind of program will this be exactly, will it be funny, and is there anything else that we can expect one of America’s favorite redheads to appear in in the near future? We answer those questions and more in our following guide to everything fans should know about Conan O’Brien Must Go .

What Is The Conan O'Brien Must Go Premiere Date?

Conan O'Brien on Conan O'Brien Must Go

Conan O’Brien Must Go is set to premiere on April 18, 2024 , when it will be available to stream with a  Max subscription . The date was announced months after we learned the title and premise of the the comedian's new program and even longer since he ended his 28 years in late night television.

The Docuseries Follows The Talk Show Host Around The World

Conan O'Brien on Conan O'Brien Must Go

A title as self-effacing as Conan O’Brien Must Go is perfectly on brand for the host’s self-mocking style of comedy. It also sounds like a reference to the 2011 documentary, Conan O’Brien Can’t Stop , which followed him on a cross-country tour performing comedy after his disastrously short-lived stint on The Tonight Show that led him to cut ties with NBC and burdened his relationship with Jay Leno . However, the title has a deeper, more international meaning.

According to a press release from Warner Bros. Discovery, Conan O’Brien Must Go is a documentary series that will follow the comedian traveling the globe, bringing his signature humor to a different country in each of its four episodes. The show appears to also be an extension of his Emmy-winning, acclaimed travel show , Conan Without Borders , which itself was an extension of his talk show on TBS. However, its roots are actually based in O’Brien’s most popular, ongoing endeavor as of late.

The Show Is A Loose Spin-Off From His Podcast

Conan O'Brien hosting Conan O'Brien Needs a Fan

In 2018, O’Brien launched his career as a podcast host with Conan O’Brien Needs a Friend — an audio interview series comically framed as a ruse to get famous people, such as Harrison Ford , to talk to him. Eventually, he and his co-hosts — his longtime assistant, Sona Movsesian, and producer and podcasting veteran, Matt Gourley — introduced side episodes called Conan O’Brien Needs a Fan , which invited non-celebrities who admire the comedian to speak with him, with some calling in from overseas. The new series is now giving those international guests the chance to meet him face-to-face.

In addition to experiencing new locations and diverse cultures from around the world, the conceit of the docuseries is watching O’Brien reconnect with some the foreign friends he has made through his podcast. As they act as the comedian’s unofficial tour guide to their home country’s most essential sights and customs, he will also continue to build on his acquaintanceship with them, learning more about each on a more personal level.

The Trailers See Conan Commit International Tomfoolery

Conan O'Brien on Conan O'Brien Must Go

Any fans of the aforementioned Conan Without Borders — streaming on Max now — know that O’Brien goes deep in his attempts to immerse himself in the culture of his tourism spots. Such will also to be the case for Conan O'Brien Must Go , as evident by the latest trailer, which begins with narration from Werner Herzog and also confirms that O'Brien's associate producer, Jordan Schlansky, is coming along for the ride. Check out the full clip below:

The first teaser for Conan O'Brien Needs a Friend also saw the comedian make a more epic entrance of “Conan the Red,” before showing him surprising some his previous Conan O'Brien Needs a Fan guests — such as Norwegian rap artist, Ola — and experiencing Thailand's intensely spicy street food. The hilarity only grows as the montage of clips grow more extravagantly bizarre, making us glad that he settled on a series that shows him out-and-about — the source of some of his best material — instead of another variety show like we anticipated for his return on Max.

Conan O'Brien Is Also An Executive Producer

Conan O'Brien on Conan O'Brien Must Go

As has been the case with most of his projects in the last several years, O’Brien is also executive producing the docuseries. He is doing so with his production company, Conaco, which has also backed his previous talk shows, one of the best stand-up specials on Max ( Moses Storm: Trash White ), the Adult Swim original action-comedy, Eagleheart , and a couple of scripted sci-fi comedies for TBS — namely the live-action, prematurely cancelled People of Earth , and the animated Final Space .

Also receiving an executive producer credit for the travel series is Jeff Ross (not to be confused with comedian Jeff Ross, who has poked fun at celebrities as “Roast Master General” for years). The Emmy winner (for producing Conan Without Borders ) has had a working relationship with O’Brien since his days hosting Late Night on NBC, as the pair recalled on a special episode of Inside Conan — another Team Coco-powered podcast.

Other Recent Conan O’Brien Projects

Conan O'Brien in Please Don’t Destroy: The Treasure of Foggy Mountain

For those who cannot get enough of the witty redhead, Must Go is not the only project of his to look forward to or check out now. Following his many hilarious cameos in movies and TV shows over the years, he appeared in Please Don't Destroy: The Treasure of Foggy Mountain , which was written by and starring the eponymous trio of Saturday Night Live writers . The film became available to stream exclusively with a Peacock subscription in November 2023.

According to Carmel Monthly Magazine , the Harvard history graduate was interviewed by young filmmaker Ashton Gleckman for his upcoming docuseries about a president O’Brien has imitated many a time on his show: John F. Kennedy. He was also a talking head in director Rob Reiner ’s Max exclusive documentary, Albert Brooks: Defending My Life , which profiles the life and career of the Academy Award-nominated comedian and filmmaker known for Finding Nemo and Drive and is now available on Max. In the meantime, while fans wait for these titles to come out, they can expect new episodes of Conan O’Brien Needs a Friend or any of the other podcasts he produces on a semiweekly basis.

As someone who has admired the once-reigning King of Late Night for years, Conan O’Brien Must Go cannot arrive anytime soon enough, as far as I am concerned.

When will solar eclipse reach your town? These maps show path's timing, how long it lasts.

Hundreds of cities in 13 u.s. states fall directly on the april 8 eclipse's path of totality as the moon blocks the sun's disc and ushers in darkness. these interactive maps offer a closer look..

max travel shows

Come Monday, millions of Americans from Texas to Maine will stop what they're doing to step outside and spend a few minutes gazing skyward .

Few celestial events have the power to capture our collective attention the way this upcoming total solar eclipse has managed to do. And for those making time to witness it, two questions are bound to be on their mind : Will totality reach my area and if so, how long will the resulting darkness last?

Most people across the country are bound to experience the eclipse in some form, but only 13 states fall directly on the path of totality, where the moon will appear large enough to shield all but the sun's outermost layer, the corona.

As you make your eclipse-viewing plans, these interactive maps should help you chart the time and duration for when totality will occur in cities along the path.

Solar eclipse experiment: Here's why NASA is launching 3 sounding rockets into space during the total solar eclipse

Total solar eclipse path of totality map

The 115-mile-wide path of totality will pass from southwest to northeast over portions of Mexico the United States and Canada.

Mexico's Pacific coast will be the first location in continental North America to experience totality, which will occur at about 11:07 a.m. PDT,  according to NASA .

As the moon's shadow travels northeast, totality in the U.S. will begin at 1:27 p.m. CDT in Eagle Pass, Texas. From there, the path will cut diagonally across the country before ending around 3:35 p.m. EDT in Lee, Maine.

Remember: If you plan to witness the eclipse, proper eyewear is a must until the eclipse reaches totality, then it can be viewed with the naked eye.

Here's a map of some of the larger cities in each of the 13 states on the path to show how the duration of totality will vary:

Cities, states on the path of totality

All told, nearly 500 cities in 13 U.S. states are located on the eclipse's path of totality. Here are some of the major cities in each of the 13 states:

  • Dallas and San Antonio, Texas
  • Idabel, Oklahoma
  • Poplar Bluff, Missouri
  • Little Rock, Arkansas
  • Paducah, Kentucky
  • Indianapolis and Evansville, Indiana
  • Carbondale, Illinois
  • Cleveland and Toledo, Ohio
  • Buffalo, Rochester and Syracuse, New York
  • Burlington, Vermont
  • Lancaster, New Hampshire
  • Caribou, Maine
  • Erie, Pennsylvania

This interactive map provides a closer look at cities along the path, when totality will arrive there and how long totality will last:

Eclipse watch parties, festivals

Such a rare event is sure to attract skygazing tourists unlucky enough to live outside the path of totality. Fortunately, many cities that will experience the total eclipse are planning plenty of festivities for tourists and locals alike.

This map , courtesy of Kristian Campana at festivalguidesandreviews.com , includes locations of watch parties, music festivals and more all tied to the eclipse's arrival:

Conan O'Brien will be a guest on 'The Tonight Show,' 14 years after his acrimonious exit

Conan O'Brien during a live taping of Conan O'Brien Needs a Friend in New York City,

Does time — and a new host — heal all wounds? Fourteen years after  Conan O’Brien  was messily ousted from NBC’s “The Tonight Show” to make way for the return of  Jay Leno  — the comedian is finally back.

O’Brien will appear on the April 9 show to promote his new travel series “Conan O’Brien Must Go” for Max in conversation with  Jimmy Fallon,  who  took over from Leno in 2014.

After more than 15 years of hosting “Late Night with Conan O’Brien” on NBC, O’Brien was promoted to lead the network’s flagship late-night show in 2009, after it was announced Leno would be given a new prime-time show, also on NBC.

After seven months of slipping “Tonight Show” ratings and and pressure from affiliates who said “The Jay Leno Show” wasn’t a strong enough lead-in to their nightly newscasts, NBC made a plan to shorten Leno’s show to a half-hour and give it a 11:35 p.m. timeslot, which would have bumped “The Tonight Show” to 12:05 a.m.

“It was my mistaken belief that, like my predecessor, I would have the benefit of some time and, just as important, some degree of ratings support from the prime-time schedule,” O’Brien said at the time in a statement.

He refused to accept the move, and  the public spat  ended with O’Brien and his staff receiving a multimillion-dollar payout to exit NBC in early 2010.

“And I just want to say to the kids out there watching: You can do anything you want in life. Unless Jay Leno wants to do it, too,” O’Brien said in a monologue before his departure, calling “The Tonight Show” the fulfillment of a lifelong dream.

O’Brien didn’t stay off the airwaves for too long, returning to late-night in November 2010 on basic-cable network TBS.  “Conan” would run for nearly 11 years . (The first episode beat Leno’s “Tonight Show” in the ratings.)

In 2012, O’Brien  told The Hollywood Reporter  that while he still had latent resentment, he acknowledged a onetime “amazing partnership with NBC.”

“There are moments of, ‘What the hell happened? Why did that person do that or say that?’ But there’s also lot of, ‘OK, let’s file this under There’s A Lot I Can’t Control,’” he told the trade publication, adding that he and Leno no longer spoke to one another.

O’Brien’s return to “The Tonight Show” — which  moved from Southern California to New York  when Fallon took the helm — isn’t the first time Fallon has used his show to extend an olive branch. On his first night as host, Joan Rivers made a brief appearance in a bit where celebrities paid up after betting money Fallon would never be host. Rivers had been  infamously banned from the show when Johnny Carson was the host  after she got her own late-night show on Fox. (After his acrimonious departure from NBC, O’Brien himself visited “Late Night with Jimmy Fallon” in a surprise appearance.)

As for O’Brien, he now hosts the  podcast “Conan O’Brien Needs a Friend.”  In his new travel show, O’Brien visits countries like Ireland, Thailand, Argentina and Norway.

The overall vibe among late-night talk show hosts has also evolved from the days of intense competition between Leno and  CBS’ David Letterman  to congeniality — and even friendship. Last summer, Fallon, Stephen Colbert, Seth Meyers, John Oliver and Jimmy Kimmel teamed up for a  podcast called “Strike Force Five”  to support their staff during  the writers strike.

Solar eclipse maps show 2024 totality path, peak times and how much of the eclipse people could see across the U.S.

By Aliza Chasan

Updated on: April 9, 2024 / 5:00 AM EDT / CBS News

A total solar eclipse  crossed North America Monday with parts of 15 U.S. states within the path of totality. Maps show  where and when astronomy fans could see the big event  as skies darkened in the middle of the day Monday, April 8.

The total eclipse first appeared along Mexico's Pacific Coast at around 11:07 a.m. PDT, then traveled across a swath of the U.S., from Texas to Maine, and into Canada.

About 31.6 million people live in the path of totality , the area where the moon fully blocked out the sun , according to NASA. The path ranged between 108 and 122 miles wide. An additional 150 million people live within 200 miles of the path of totality.

United states map showing the path of the 2024 solar eclipse and specific regions of what the eclipse duration will be.

The total solar eclipse started over the Pacific Ocean, and the first location in continental North America that experienced totality was Mexico's Pacific Coast, around 11:07 a.m. PDT, according to NASA. From there, the path continued into Texas, crossing more than a dozen states before the eclipse enters Canada in southern Ontario. The eclipse exited continental North America at around 5:16 p.m. NDT from Newfoundland, Canada.

The path of totality included portions of the following states:

  • Pennsylvania
  • New Hampshire

Small parts of Tennessee and Michigan also experienced the total solar eclipse.

Several major cities across the U.S. were included in the eclipse's path of totality, while many others saw a partial eclipse. These were some of the best major cities for eclipse viewing — though the weather was a factor :

  • San Antonio, Texas (partially under the path)
  • Austin, Texas
  • Waco, Texas
  • Dallas, Texas
  • Little Rock, Arkansas
  • Indianapolis, Indiana
  • Dayton, Ohio
  • Cleveland, Ohio
  • Buffalo, New York
  • Rochester, New York
  • Syracuse, New York
  • Burlington, Vermont

Map of when the solar eclipse reached totality across its path

The eclipse began in the U.S. as a partial eclipse beginning at 12:06 p.m. CDT near Eagle Pass, Texas, before progressing to totality by about 1:27 p.m. CDT and then moving along its path to the northeast over the following few hours.

Eclipse map of totality

NASA shared times for several cities in the path of totality across the U.S. People could have also  checked their ZIP code on NASA's map  to see when the eclipse was to reach them if they were on, or near, the path of totality — or if they saw a partial eclipse instead.

How much of the eclipse did people see if they live outside the totality path?

While the April 8 eclipse covered a wide swath of the U.S., outside the path of totality observers may have spotted a partial eclipse, where the moon covers some, but not all, of the sun, according to NASA. The closer they were to the path of totality, the larger the portion of the sun that was hidden.

NASA allowed viewers to input a ZIP code and see how much of the sun was to be covered in their locations.

Could there be cloud cover be during the solar eclipse?

Some areas along the path of totality had a higher likelihood of cloud cover that could interfere with viewing the eclipse. Here is a map showing the historical trends in cloud cover this time of year.

You could have checked the latest forecast for your location with our partners at The Weather Channel .

United States map showing the percent of cloud cover in various regions of the eclipse path on April 8. The lakeshore region will be primarily affected.

Where did the solar eclipse reach totality for the longest?

Eclipse viewers near Torreón, Mexico, got to experience totality for the longest. Totality there lasted 4 minutes, 28 seconds, according to NASA.

Most places along the centerline of the path of totality saw a totality duration of between 3.5 and 4 minutes, according to NASA. Some places in the U.S. came close to the maximum; Kerrville, Texas, had a totality duration of 4 minutes, 24 seconds.

What is the path of totality for the 2044 solar eclipse?

The next total solar eclipse that will be visible from the contiguous U.S. will be on Aug. 23, 2044.

Astronomy fans in the U.S. will have far fewer opportunities to see the 2044 eclipse they had on April 8. NASA has not yet made maps available for the 2044 eclipse but, according to The Planetary Society , the path of totality will only touch three states.

The 2024 eclipse will start in Greenland, pass over Canada and end as the sun sets in Montana, North Dakota and South Dakota, according to the Planetary Society.
