Let's Go Pampanga

Arayat, the next ‘Vacation Paradise’ town

Gabriel Diaz

One among the first towns established in Pampanga with a rich and interesting history, Arayat might be the next top tourist destination to be considered as it can be deliberately described as a “ vacation paradise .”

Arayat which existed between the 14th and 16th century was considered to be one of the most progressive settlements in Pampanga during the year 1571 and became a Spanish military fort in 1600.

Former President Manuel L. Quezon used to visit and celebrate his birthdays in the town in the mid-1930s, he even built a “ Little Malacañang ” and made several improvements in Arayat, particularly in Mt. Arayat, during his time.

The construction of Mount Arayat National Park , one of the oldest parks in the Philippines, began in 1933 which was initiated by former President Quezon.

Aside from Arayat National Park, St. Catherine of Alexandria Parish Church built in 1753 and Bahay Antigo or also known as Samia House which was constructed in 1895, considered historical and was the residence of the wealthy Santos family in Arayat during the Spanish colonial period, are also recognized as the landmarks of the town. Both located at Barangay Poblacion.

The monument of Gen. Jose Alejandrino , town hero and former Senator and Pampanga Governor, one of the contributors in La Solidaridad and member of the propagandist movement of the national hero Dr. Jose Rizal, can also be seen in front of the town municipal hall as an attraction and was built in honor of his bravery.

Multiple resorts, hotels, and lodging houses are also available at the humble and relaxing town of Arayat.

Your Guide to Hiking in the Philippines

Mt. Arayat South Peak

Mt. Arayat Traverse Day Hike: North Peak to South Peak

Introduction.

Mt. Arayat is located in the province of Pampanga, in the middle of the Central Luzon or Region 3 in the Philippines. It has an elevation of 1026 meters or 3366 feet. It offers scenic views of Central Luzon plain, rice paddies, and the Pampanga River. The southern half of the mountain lies within the municipality of Arayat, Pampanga, while the north half and the mountain summit lie within Magalang, Pampanga. The Mount Arayat National Park was established in 1933.

Mt. Arayat in the past is considered volcanic but as the years and decades have passed, it can’t be considered a volcano now because it hasn’t had an eruption for decades, Mt. Arayat is now an inactive volcano.

According to its past history, during the Philippine Revolution against the Spanish rulers, the Filipino revolutionaries retreated on Mt. Arayat after the breakdown of the first Cry of Nueva Ecija in September 1896 when the Spanish forces counter-attacked at the municipality of San Isidro. Afterward, Mt. Arayat was once a recreation area of President Manuel Quezon during the Commonwealth of the Philippines. In 1933 Mt. Arayat has proclaimed a National Park because of its wonderful refreshing surroundings. The national park has a total area of 3715 hectares or 37.15 square kilometers. It is one of the most reachable parks in the Central Luzon region. Then in 1942, Mt. Arayat is the hiding place of the Hukbalahap or Filipino communist guerrilla movement against the mighty Japanese forces during the Second World War. As of today, Mt. Arayat is the dwelling place of 49 species of plants and trees including two species of endemic tree (fire tree and chamberlain’s pitogo), 86 species of birds, 14 species of mammals, and 11 species of reptiles.

My trip to Mt. Arayat

One of my dreams is to hike Mt. Arayat in Pampanga because I always see the mountain every time I go to the Northern parts of Luzon and pass through the NLEX (North Luzon Expressway) road. It is the only giant and the most visible mountain that I saw while traveling NLEX road. I know the view from above would be great as no other mountains near Mt. Arayat.

One day, someone posted an event in the Facebook group – Mt. Arayat traverse day hike, I immediately joined that group. I have already done my first major climb on Mt. Ugo but it’s an overnight hike. So this will be the first time that I will do a major climb on a day hike only. I’m excited.

We are nine of us in the group. As part of an organized hike, the original itinerary is to start hiking at 5 am. However, due to an unexpected turn of events, the van arrived late at Magalang, Pampanga because the driver drop off the group in Barangay Juan Bano at 5am instead of Barangay Ayala, Magalang, so we circled back again and because of traffic, we arrived in Magalang at 7 am, two hours late than the original plan.

Mt. Arayat jump-off

The path to the jump-off is a known place for pilgrims during the Holy Week season. There are statues that serve as the markers for the “Stations of the Cross”. Near the 7th Station is where the DENR Registration Area is located. After registration, securing our guide, paying the fees, and having breakfast, we have a short briefing on Mt. Arayat. Then the group circled and started praying to God to guide our footsteps, give us strength, have good weather, and come back home safely. For the last time we pack up and we started the hike at 7:45 am.

The initial part runs on the trail of the Station of the Cross that leads to a forest. As the sun was already high up when we started the hike, I noticed that most parts of the trail are covered with trees, good for us, so we don’t have to worry about the sun’s heat. Also the trail is well-established. We arrive at White Rock at 9 am, it’s a scenic rock formation within the mountain and we take some pictures there.

taking pictures

Then we continue hiking, as the trails become more continuously ascending, and we felt there is no wind at all inside the mountain, we were tired and sweaty already even though the entire hike had just started. The heat is rather extreme even though you are under the tree canopy for most of it. We take a little rest, drink water, and eat our trail foods.

While resting we saw some monkeys above the tree. I can hear their calls even on the last leg of the trail going to North Peak. Mt. Arayat has two peaks called the North and the South Peak. First, we need to go to North Peak then later on traverse South Peak.

They said that this Mt. Arayat traverse is comparable with the Makiling traverse in Laguna in terms of difficulty, trail, and the overall hiking experience. The trail from Magalang to North Peak is on a constantly ascending path. There are many assault trails going to North Peak but we take our time and enjoy the hike. I have a good company of people who loves hiking.

forested trail of Mt. Arayat

We reached the North Peak, the actual summit of Mt. Arayat around 10:30 am. We didn’t see any other people or groups during that entire three hours of hiking going to the North Peak. At the North Peak campsite, finally, we saw some groups that do an overnight traverse. Our group decided to have our lunch on the North Peak too.

The view from the North Peak is awesome, 270 degrees that encompass mostly the Central Luzon provinces of Pampanga, Nueva Ecija, and  Zambales. We take pictures and we stayed in North Peak for an hour. Some of the group members took a nap to gain more strength and energy for the challenging assault on South Peak. Between these 2 peaks is a ridgeline between the North and the South Peaks where much of the difficulty of the traverse lies.

After our lunch, we decided to resume our trek going to South Peak at 11:45 am. The beginning of the trail from North to South Peak is descending, it’s easier and also forested making it a cool and refreshing hike. But the ascending part going to South Peak is the most challenging part of the entire hiking in Mt. Arayat, it’s a pure endless assault. The trail is very steep and in some areas, there is a fixed rope to aid our ascent. Vertical clay rock walls with rope segments, steep and longer ascents make this technically a major climb and not easy after all.

The hike became more difficult as we advanced with the trail consistent on the steep ascent all the way through. The assault towards the South Peak requires both 2 legs and 2 arms for gripping as the trail runs on a steeply inclined slope. We were already exhausted, we took several breathers, some of the members said they are giving up but we need to push through in order for us to reach the South Peak summit. The final ascent to the summit was the steepest a 90-degree then later a few more walks on flat ground and we were finally at the summit.

The hike to South Peak lasts 3 hours with ample rest. It requires patience and perseverance. We reached the South Peak at 2:15 pm. All the way to the summit was very exhausting, assault to assault to another assault but the site was indeed amazing, overlooking the Central Luzon plain, rice fields, and Pampanga River. Awesome!

South Peak view

Hiking up gives a grand view of the area. We can see the view of Central Luzon, Pampanga valley, and the river. Definitely worth the exhausting of almost 3 hours of hiking from North Peak to reach the South Peak summit. Finally, I conquered Mt. Arayat, my dream climb has come true.

We spent nearly 1 hour on South Peak. We had clearing so we enjoyed the view from above and we take a lot of pictures of the amazing view.  The viewing deck of South Peak is much better compared to North Peak in my own opinion. It offers a view of Mt. Arayat’s horn, as well as the vast plains of Central Luzon with the Pampanga River, a snake-like pattern as the river flows across a fairly flat valley floor. We eat our trail food there, share thoughts and rest for a little while before descending.

viewing deck of Mt. Arayat

We resume our trekking going down the mountain around 3:30 pm. It’s now a cooler hike. The first part of the trail has lots of rocks then followed by a pristine tropical forest with lots of Balete trees all the way down, similar to Peak 2 of Mt. Arayat until it gives way to open, grassy slopes. Our descent from the South Peak wasn’t easy, but the view was still amazing.

We have to be very careful with every step of our feet so that we would not be injured, get bruises and have scratches on our way down. Some of the group members have muscle cramps, so the group takes it little by little all the way down, the group leader and the guide assist the member who is suffering from cramps. By 5:30 pm it was raining already, but fortunately, we had our own umbrella inside our backpack.

The night catches up with the group on the trail, but fortunately, we had our own flashlight too. We reached the open plains and cement road on Juan Bano’s side at 7:15 pm in the evening, where the van is waiting for us. It takes us almost four hours to descend because of the circumstances.

All in all, we spent 12 hours on this traverse hike of Mt. Arayat being dropped on one side of the mountain and being picked up on the other side at the end of the day. What an adventure!. It was an unforgettable experience.

eating at Chowking

We were so tired and exhausted after the climb. Then we have our late dinner on a stopover at Chowking on the way back to Manila. Later we come back home safely. Praise God for guiding us and keeping us safe. Mt. Arayat is my second major climb.

We all have our reasons why we keep on reaching those summits and one of my reason is to “Climb mountains not so the world can see you, but so you can see the world.”

Things to bring on your visit to Mt. Arayat:

Reminders and Tips:

  • Mt. Arayat is not good for beginners, it’s a major climb. It has challenging trails with long steep ascents and descents so prepare yourself physically and mentally conditioned if you’re doing a traverse day-hike. The traverse hike is no easy task. If you’re going for a day hike, it is advisable to start the hike as early as 5 AM. A tour guide and registration are required at a minimal cost.
  • Make sure to bring your own flashlights/headlamps even if it’s a day hike only, it’s good in case the night catches up with you on the trail.
  • The golden rule of traveling – Leave No Trace (LNT). Take nothing but photographs, leave nothing but footprints, and keep nothing but memories.
  • Always be a responsible hiker/camper and bring your own trash when u go down. Respect the locals and respect the place.
  • Mosquitoes, flies, and other insects abound in Mt. Arayat so off lotion, and mosquito repellent is a must.
  • Bring lots of water as there are only a few water sources inside the mountain. Also water discipline is a good skill to have on this mountain.
  • The guide fee for three peaks is 1,800 pesos while the guide fee for two peaks only is 1,500 pesos. The registration fee is thirty pesos.
  • If you’re an experienced hiker and you want a more challenging climb then you can choose the Mt. Ayarat Pinnacle trail (Pinnacle to South Peak) which has a difficulty of 7/9, a trail class of 1 to 4, and has a trail length of 8 kilometers. The trail is straightforward and mostly forested until you arrive at the viewpoints leading to Pinnacle Peak. On the other hand, you may climb Mt. Arayat Quad Peak in twelve to fourteen hours on a forested trail. The hardest part of Quad Peak is the solid assault trail on rugged cliffs approximately seventy-five to eighty-five degrees with no flats in between.
  • Last but not least the mobile signal in Mt. Arayat is super weak.

How to Get to Mt. Arayat

15 BEST Pampanga Tourist Spots (Food, Heritage & Nature)

 alt=

The beautiful province of Pampanga has long been one of the most popular tourist destinations in the country. This is simply because everything it offers comes close to everyone’s hearts. From its breathtaking natural wonders to its rich history and culture, exciting entertainment hubs, booming economy, grand festivals and celebrations, and most importantly, heavenly selections of food!

Historically speaking, Pampanga has proved to be one of the most important provinces in the country ever since the Spanish Colony. It was the first-ever province created by the Spaniards and therefore became the richest throughout the 333-year reign of Spain. With that being said, you can almost guarantee that every bit of Pampanga’s culture and tradition has a huge Spanish influence. Pampanga is also home to some of the Philippines’ best-known natural landmarks including Mt. Pinatubo, Mt. Arayat, and the mesmerizing Miyamit Falls!

Mt. Arayat Trek: A Legendary Climb

Misty Mt. Arayat

Mount Arayat is an extinct stratovolcano on Luzon Island, Philippines, rising to a height of 1,026 meters (3,366 ft) There is no recorded eruption of the volcano, and its last activity probably dates to the Holocene era.

The volcano is located in a flat agricultural region at 15°12′N 120°45′E. The southern half of the mountain lies within the municipality of Arayat, Pampanga, while the north half and the mountain summit lies within Magalang, Pampanga. Ten miles to the west of Mount Arayat is Angeles City and the former Clark Air Base. Mount Pinatubo is located a further 16 km (10 mi) west. The volcano is a popular Tourist destination for people visiting the central plains.

It is considered a mystical mountain, the legendary home of Aung/Aring Sinukuan/Sinkuan/Suku or the Fairy known as diwata Mariang Sinukuan depending on which version of the story the readers or listeners prefer, but in ancient Kapampangan folklore as well as the research known to have been gathered by Kapampangan students of Henry Otley Beyer, it was and is the abode of Apung/Aring Sinukuan, rival of Namalyari of Mount Pinatubo, who is in varying versions, the son of Cargon-Cargon who was mortally wounded in a fight with a giant from the Zambales Mountain Range which is said to be the home of Apu Namalyari.

Mount Arayat stands in the middle of the flat Central Luzon Plain, consisting of rice paddies and a typical elevation of about 15 to 35 metres MSL. The mountain is topped by a circular volcanic crater about 1.2 km in diameter, much of which has collapsed on the western and part of the northern rim due to erosion. This has resulted in a breached crater which opens in a west-northwest direction. This area is the apparent source of a major debris-avalanche deposit that forms hummocky terrain beyond the west and northwest sides of the volcano. The 1026-metre summit stands on the northeast side of the breached crater, known as North Peak, while the 984-metre Pinnacle Peak is located on the southeast crater rim. Post-collapse activity formed an andesitic dome known as White Rock in the collapse amphitheater.

There are no cultural records of historical eruptions. However, weak steaming is currently present in some of the heavily eroded vents on the North Western side of the summit. The ancient eruptions were said to have caused the formation of a Lava Dome on the Western Slopes of the mountain known as White Rock which makes a nice tourist destination and is usually a field trip destination for students of Pampanga Agricultural College. The Arayat amphitheatre is said to have been caused by the summit's collapse on the western side but a much deeper crater is present on the eastern side, it was said that the mountain was once a volcanic island, until eruptions covered the surrounding area with soil, eruptions were said to be the possible cause of a theorized re-route of Pampanga River which is said to have once passed on the western side rather than eastern side where it currently moves.

Rock types are basalt and andesite. The only rocks reported to have been dated are 0.53 and 0.65 million-year-old basalts. These predate the crater collapse and formation of the lava dome known as White Rock, which could have occurred in the last 2000 years. The mountain which is believed to be several peaks merged at the top by some local people is actually a Single-Cone Stratovolcano.

Hiking activity

Two trails lead to the peaks of Mount Arayat. Mount Arayat National Park Located at San Juan Baño in Arayat, Pampanga has a trail to the southern Peak, taking around 3–4 hours to reach the peak. The Southern Peak offers views of Central Luzon, including a view of Pampanga River. The collapsed western Slope that forms the other half of its Caldera like crater can also be seen. It offers a view of the mountains of Zambales and Bataan (to the west), and the mountains of the Sierra Madre range (to the east). The northern or higher Peak can be accessed on a route from Pampanga Agricultural College in Magalang, Pampanga, taking a similar time to reach the peak, however, this route takes you through the Arayat Amphitheatre and the so-called White Rock which legend claims to be the Home of Apung/Aring Sinukuan or Sinukuan.

Arayat in Folklore

The Mountain is said to be the home of the god/sorcerer named Sinukuan/Sinukwan or Sucu, which could mean "The end" or "he who others have surrendered to." The mountain was said to have been located in the swamp to its south but relocated because of the evil ways of those who lived there, in addition to which, the people of the swamp were made to suffer numerous misfortunes. Sinukuan is believed to be able to transform and do as he pleases at will, his only real rival being Namalyari of Mount Pinatubo. The waterfalls at Ayala in Magalang, Pampanga is said to be his bathing quarters, and it is often visited by tourists and natives alike. Sinukuan is said to live at the White rock, a Lava dome possibly formed by the last eruption, where its glimmering properties were most likely to have inspired the legend. Contrary to reality, the mountain is believed to be several mountains merging at the center including the tallest two peaks.

In other legends, Sinukuan is said to have bested Makiling of southern Luzon almost effortlessly unlike his arch rival Namalyari. Sinukuan is believed to have daughters who come down only during time of grace and are disguised as humans; Sinukuan himself can be disguised as human. The day he comes back is believed to either be when he responds to the attack of Namalyari on Mount Pinatubo's 1991 eruption or when the time to call his servants upon the end of the world has come.

The hike up to the summit is considered a minor climb, making this adventure perfect for beginners and experienced hikers. The package also includes transportation from Manila, the service of a guide, a personalized souvenir bag tag, and all necessary fees.

Your hiking adventure begins in the late evening when the designated driver picks you up from your hotel or preferred pick-up location in Metro Manila or Cavite (1 pickup point only). From there, you will be driven to Mt. Arayat National Park in Pampanga, where you will be able to take an early breakfast. Meals are not included in the package, so make sure to bring your own food with you on the trek. Following your meal, you will register and undergo a safety briefing at the jump-off location before beginning your Mt. Arayat hike.

Your first destination during this Mt. Arayat hiking trip is Pinnacle Peak on the southeast crater rim of the mountain. The trail leading up to the summit only has a handful of flat surfaces so expect a steep climb for most of the journey. Although it may not be an easy climb, the path does cut through lush trees that provide shade from the sun's rays, helping you keep cool throughout your ascent. Following your climb, you will be rewarded with a breathtaking view of the Pampanga River and the vast fields surrounding the mountain.

From Pinnacle Peak, you will then make your way to South Peak before returning to the jump-off point. You will have to go through a ridge to reach the second summit. While you will also have to get past rocky cliffs during the journey to South Peak, there are ropes in designated spots that you can hold onto to help you climb. After traveling through the dense foliage covering the mountain, you will find yourself at South Peak. From here, you can see Pinnacle Peak and the Pampanga River that snakes through the open fields.

After taking a break here, you will finally start your descent back to the registration site. Feel free to wash up, rest, and have some snacks (own expense) before the driver escorts you back to Metro Manila or Cavite.

BAHAY NA BATO

At the foot of Mt. Arayat, the lone mountain of Pampanga, lies a hidden structure which at a glimpse would resemble a temple in Indonesia. The creator spent more than half of his entire life working on the project—and as a result of his hard work, the artist achieved his goal, creating a masterpiece I never expected. The temple-like structure that I am talking about is called “Bale Batu”, built by the industrious hands and artistic mind of a pure blood Kapampangan artist, Jesus Padilla, or most commonly known as Apung Susing. A living proof of Pampangueños’ ingenuity and creativity.

GINTUNG PAKPAK

Built on the slopes of Mt. Arayat on the Baliti side, Gintung Pakpak, exists with you in mind whether you are 3 to 93 years old. Its accessibility is carefully engineered to blend naturally with the existing natural contour of the mountain. Our well paved concrete roads from the barrio leading right to the doorsteps of our villas, function halls, campsite, wedding garden and other facilities is perfect for any occasion you may plan for your family, corporate, retreats among others. To cite a few of the wonders of Gintung Pakpak EcoPark, take time to imagine and this was newly renovated.

Aling Lucing is the most famous sisig restaurant in Pampanga, all thanks to Lucia Cunanan. The Department of Tourism has credited Aling Lucing as the Sisig Queen and led to the establishment of Angeles City as Sisig Capital of the Philippines.

The original Sisig of Aling Lucing’s restaurant is made of grilled and chopped pork ears and face, including chicken liver, seasoned with calamansi juice, chopped onions, vinegar, and served on a hot plate.

Over the years, there have been many variations of the dish, which uses other proteins like a combination of pork meats, chicken, seafood, green mussels, and other exotic meats of crocodile and ostrich.

Razon has been synonymous with one of Filipinos favorite desserts and snacks during the summer season. You might already happen to dine at the many branches in Metro Manila and other cities in the Philippines as well.

While the typical halo-halo has layers of ingredients, Razon’s halo-halo sticks to three main components: sweetened macapuno, sweetened saba, and Leche Flan. Their special milk and shaved ice all complete their famous halo-halo.

But did you know that Razon’s originated in Guagua Pampanga? It all started with the three sisters when their version of halo-halo became a hit from their small stall inside their ancestral home in 1972. Years later, the business has reached Metro Manila and other key cities under Razon’s of Guagua.

Today, there are expansions of the brand managed by the third and fourth generations of the Razon family.
