The very tall and modern twin towers in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia

Towering Views

The very tall and modern twin towers in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia

Admire Kuala Lumpur's skyscrapers, including the symbol of the city: the Petronas Twin Towers. Tickets to the Skybridge sell out early; it might be easier to get a ticket up to the observation deck of Menara KL Tower, which stands 1,000 feet tall. The KL Tower is also the official observation point for sighting the moon to determine the start of the holy month of Ramadan.

Yellow lanterns hanging on the roof of the temple in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia

Decorative Diversity

Yellow lanterns hanging on the roof of the temple in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia

See some of Kuala Lumpur's older buildings too. The Sri Mahamariamman Temple is covered with Hindu statues, and Jamek Mosque is in the Moorish style (you can tour parts of the inside enter if dressed conservatively). The National Museum is beautiful, too, and has replica Malay houses inside. The intricately decorated six tiers of Thean Hou Temple are a Kuala Lumpur landmark.

The Batu Caves with a gold statue of Lord Murugan at the entrance near Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia

Holy Spelunking

The Batu Caves, in the Kuala Lumpur suburb of Selangor, have Hindu shrines within them. You'll need to climb 272 steps to see the largest Cathedral Cave; there are several smaller caves, too. The 140-foot-tall golden statue at the entrance is Murugan, a Hindu deity.

Satay on a stick found as street food in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia

Local Cuisine

Kuala Lumpur is a street-food mecca. Pick up satay skewers of grilled meat in peanut sauce. Cruise to Kuala Lumpur and try Malaysia's national dish nasi lemak , coconut rice with pandan leaf, spicy sambal, cucumber slices and a choice of meat — fried chicken is a favorite option. Indulge in the flatbread dish roti canai : Enjoy it in savory form with chicken or mutton, or try the dessert version with bananas and ice cream.

Lanterns hung in the shopping mall of Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia

Kuala Lumpur is known for its excellent shopping and for having prices better than Hong Kong and Singapore. Try the downtown neighborhood of Bukit Bintang, Suria KLCC below the Petronas Towers, or Chinatown's Central Market, also called Pasar Seni. During your Kuala Lumpur cruise, look for traditional fabrics like batik and Malay brocade.

Cruises from/to Port Klang (Kuala Lumpur), Malaysia

Port klang (kuala lumpur), malaysia cruise port.

While Kuala Lumpur is full of exciting, new, culturally immersive things to do, here are a couple of our favorite shore excursions in Port Klang:

Featured Shore Excursions

Batu Caves

Journey into Batu Caves (from $69 USD per person) Intricate caves and temples carved into a limestone hill, the Batu Caves are an incredible sight to behold. Venture into the sacred grounds before you continue your tour of the towns surrounding Port Klang. On this tour, you'll be treated to an Instagram-worthy photo opportunity at the Petronas Towers, or who knows, maybe you'll learn something at the Royal Selangor, where a smithing demonstration can create souvenirs for your friends back home! Finish your time at the Kuala Lumpur Bird Park; home to over 3,000 birds and 200 species. A bird watcher's dream, you might say.

Mah Meri Welcome ceremony

Mah Meri Culture Tour (from $79 USD per person) Cultural immersion is one of the top reasons people cruise, and this excursion literally takes you right into the village of an indigenous Malaysian tribe. You'll be greeted in traditional fashion, with a Mah Meri welcome ceremony, featuring intricately carved wooden statues that are sacred in Mah Meri culture. Finish your experience by learning origami from the ladies of the village, so you'll have a beautiful paper palm leaf to remember this unique excursion.

Port Kelang (Kuala Lumpur) Port Overview

  • For those not going to Kuala Lumpur, walking through the Aeon Bukit Tinggi Shopping Centre (also called the Aeon Jusco Shopping Centre) can easily kill several hours. This is located near the port. With four stories worth of shops and restaurants, there's pretty much nothing you can't find – especially if you forgot to pack something before your vacation.
  • The city's Little India District may seem like an odd place to go in Malaysia, but it's one of Klang's most popular attractions and oldest shopping districts. Full of shops and street vendors selling traditional Indian goods and food, you can also visit the nearby Hindu temples and shrines.
  • The Sultan Sulaiman Royal Mosque was actually built by the British in 1932. A lovely mix of art deco and Middle Eastern influences, it's also the burial place of several sultans (such as Sultan Salahuddin) and other royal family members. The colorful stained glass dome inside is quite breathtaking.
  • The Galeri Diraja Sultan Abdul Aziz (or Sultan Abdul Aziz Royal Gallery) built in 1909 is dedicated to the history of the Selangor Sultanate. The building itself has a colonial-era vibe. Inside, there's a selection of royal items, gifts, artefacts, and a crown jewel replica.

Top sites & attractions for cruises to kuala lumpur, petronas towers.

It’s impossible to miss the sheer magnitude and majesty of the Petronas Towers as you head into Kuala Lumpur. These massive twin towers rise to nearly 1,500 feet, making them just taller than Chicago’s Sears Tower, and a globally recognizable icon of Malaysia. Shop at the luxurious KLCC Shopping center at the towers’ base, then ride an express elevator up the observatory deck and lounge on the 86th floor of Tower 2 for spectacular panoramic city views. For an unusual experience, if you have a head for heights, cross from tower to tower on floors 41 and 42 via the Sky Bridge, the highest of its kind in the world.

Located inside a jagged limestone hill cloaked in a rainforest and accessed by 272 brightly colored stairs, the Batu Caves are an impressive sight. Climb the rainbow-colored stairs, guarded at the base by a towering golden statue of Sri Muruga, a Hindu deity, into the caves to uncover a series of millennia-old rock formations, intricate passages, smaller temples, and chambers dripping with stalactites. You may see bats flitting around, and wild macaques scampering up and down the steps.

Thean Hou Temple

The Thean Hou Temple is an ornate, six-tiered Chinese temple located just south of Chinatown near the center of Kuala Lumpur. The temple was built to represent the Chinese sea goddess Mazu and features elegant red-pillared pagodas with sweeping curved roofs made with intricate tiling. The architectural beauty and attention to detail make it a popular destination for travelers, and it still functions as a holy place of worship for many Buddhists, particularly the Chinese. If you visit during the fall season, you may be lucky enough to catch the famous Moon Festival event held here, or in winter, the colorful Lunar New Year celebrations.

Learn More About Asia Shore Excursions

Things to do in kuala lumpur, visit the national museum.

Kuala Lumpur’s National Museum showcases the intricate, layered mix of Malaysia’s history, art, architecture, religion, and culture. The museum itself was built to represent the style and architecture of iconic Malay royal palaces, with lavish mosaics that greet you at the entrance, and intricate tiling throughout the museum’s floors. Learn about Malaysia’s former Hindu-Buddist kingdoms, Islamic sultanates, the prehistoric ages, and more through exquisite exhibits and artifact displays. The National Museum is conveniently located near the Perdana Botanical Garden, Butterfly Park, and National Mosque of Malaysia.

Tour the Old Istana Negara

Malaysia has deep roots in royal history, many of which are still present today through the Malay culture and sense of national pride. At the lavish, gold-domed Istana Negara, or National Palace, you can get a first-hand look at what royal life in Kuala Lumpur used to be like, and learn about the monarchs who once ruled there. Since the royal family moved in 2011, this grand mansion has been open to the public as a museum, with a chance to explore the throne room, living quarters and bedrooms used by the royals.

Shop at The Pasar Seni Market

Kuala Lumpur’s main marketplace, the art deco Pasar Seni, is home to hundreds of boutiques, souvenir stalls, outdoor eateries, and a performance stage. This is a cultural heritage site that represents nearly 100 years of Kuala Lumpur’s vibrant commerce and growth. The Pasar Sani is located just a quick walk from Chinatown and the historic Petaling Street in the city center, and is the place to come for clothing, jewelry and fabrics.

Top Food and Drink Near the Kuala Lumpur Cruise Port

No trip to Malaysia would be complete without sampling some of the diverse, regional cuisines, and Kuala Lumpur does a fabulous job of providing access to all of it. You’ll find dishes from all over the region available here. Snack on street food, from a delicious roti canai to chicken satay with peanut sauce. Sit down in a cozy restaurant and relax with a bowl of creamy, coconut-flavored masak lemak made with shrimp, ginger, turmeric, chili, and garlic. Cool off with a pink-hued Bandung, an iced beverage made with milk and rose syrup.

Culture & History of Kuala Lumpur

Multicultural Kuala Lumpur is a fairly new city in a relatively new country, birthed from ancient civilizations and centuries of regional and European conquest. The city was founded by Chinese tin miners in 1857 and became the capital of the Federated Malay States in 1895, and has retained that title as the capital of Malaysia to this day. There are many Chinese, European, and Middle Eastern influences that can be seen throughout Kuala Lumpur’s culture and architecture currently. It is a city of blended traditions and represents the seat of Malaysia’s government and commerce.

The Kuala Lumpur port facilities are based in Port Klang, just under an hour’s drive from the center of the city. Port Klang has a dedicated cruise terminal that is modern, air-conditioned, has free WiFi, and a currency exchange office. There aren’t many sites to see around Port Klang, although transportation into Kuala Lumpur is available from the terminal and is abundant. All cruises to Kuala Lumpur disembark at Port Klang.

Transportation in Kuala Lumpur

Transportation in Kuala Lumpur offers plenty of options as it is a sophisticated capital city. You can ride the light rail, monorail, or city buses from place to place throughout the city with ease, and maps and fare info are available online, or via a number of smartphone apps. You can also travel easily by taxi or private coach, but be prepared for heavy traffic in many areas, and ask your driver if they have A/C before agreeing to a ride. Many of Kuala Lumpur’s attractions are fairly spread out, so walking may not be an option if you’re trying to see a lot in one day.

Shopping Near the Kuala Lumpur Cruise Port

You’ll have many shopping options right at your fingertips on cruises to Kuala Lumpur. For authentic artisan and market shopping, head to the Pasar Seni market to find local art, food items, and hand-made souvenirs. If you’re looking for a more upscale experience visit the Pavilion Shopping Mall, where high fashion and luxury brands vie for your attention. For a quick bite of some fresh fruits and vegetables, or for some spices to take home with you, follow the locals to Chow Kit Market.

Local Currency & Tipping Options

The local currency in Kuala Lumpur is the Malaysian ringgit. There are ATMs all over the city as well as many international banks where you can withdraw cash when you need it. Kuala Lumpur is very modern, and therefore credit/debit card friendly, however, be mindful when making small purchases, and expect to pay cash for street food or with other street vendors. If you are buying souvenirs in a market, expect some polite haggling. Tipping is not customary or expected with most purchases, although it is polite to leave a small tip for good restaurant service, as well as with tour guides and hotel staff.

Top 5 airlines serving from Kuala Lumpur to Anywhere

Check-in counter at the airport took more than an hour of standing in queue with online checkin. And after entering the gate the flight delayed more than 30 mins.

Me and 2 other rows were forgotten during food service. We waited over an hour before they finally served our food. Then only had what was left. They did apologize. Also, they locked the bathroom due to turbulence and my 4 year old had to pee himself because they wouldn’t unlock it for him.

Excellent airlines. I highly recommend using Emirates. Its my number 1 airlines

Well emirates since after covid recovery their service became much poorer than before , old planes to some destinations, untrained staff , rude , inflexible, and poor food, this specific flight the plane felt like in the 90s , and staff behavior was rude due to usual incidents in these flights for some destinations, i understand this but they pit everyone at the same basket, a readiness to be rude anytime

Everything was excellent. It would be nice if bigger and obese people would take two seats. The guy next to me was obese and I was squeezed into my seat. His big shoulders forced me to constantly move away from him since he spread into my space as well

Delayed for 45 minutes. Don't know what's the issue. Other than that, food was not to my satisfaction. However it's okay.

My first course flight (Aor-Kul) was cancelled in the morning, and they asked me to board the night flight hence I need to transit overnight for the 2nd flight (Kul-Myy) that supposed to be on the same day. The overnight stay was not provided, (I'm traveling with my spouse, a daughter (5 y.o.) and an infant (2 months old). Hence I booked Sama Sama Hotel at my own expense (fortunately using my enrich miles points). Other than this issue, all services is good.

Orange juice change to mineral water . Should keep the orange juice.

Entertainment system was too old, crew were unorganised during boarding

No recognition for one World Emerald member. Business class seat has flat bed

Legs space in the business class cabin is too small and pillow is dirty!

Elderly individual shud be given priority to board the plane together with passengers with children and disabled. Otherwise things are OK.

Cabin crew as always are leaps and bounds the crowning glory of MH. Friendliness and natural warmth are such incredible traits. Food was very good on this flight also; and flexibility in meal time to accomodate rest was a plus point. Early arrival and landing as the first morning inbound at T4 LHR meant I was off the plane and in the queue for an Uber in less than 15 minutes!

I enjoy traveling with Malaysia Airlines. The Asian food they serve is pretty good and the red wine was also good. They did run out of beer and only did a couple of water rounds during the flight but the staff were very friendly.

Prompt and efficient boarding. New MH-awards streaming worked first time on my personal device.

Great. Very satisfied with a direct flight from Penang back to HK international. Stewards in the cabin were very friendly and helpful. Would not hesitate to fly with Air Asia in the future.

Second time flying on AirAsia. They’re fine for a low cost carrier, so I don’t expect high level hospitality. They could have informed us that the flight would be delayed even if by a few minutes, instead of the passengers asking the gate agents why we’re not boarding 8 minutes before takeoff. And given some of the passengers on this particular flight were problematic, the crew did great handling such people.

Meh, it was AirAsia. It's not about a quality.

Great flight. Achieve my objecttive of travelling with less hassle .

They didn't have a single blanket for hire for a long haul overnight flight. This wasn't good enough even for a budget airline

Kayak shares with you the best price! and in my case it was Air Asia flight. Air Asia flight was on time, the boarding was seamless with FACES technology at KLIA2 and the pilot made a great smooth landing upon arrival. Excellent trip!

I left the city late and fortunately the flight was also delayed 50mins

Air Asia’s standard has dropped tremendously post pandemic. The whole organisation feels ‘soul-less’

By the time the “sell “ cart came around to row 17 they were out of several items. This happened both leaving and arriving in Kuala Lumpur. Poor planning.

Crews could have been more friendly and helpful . One specific crew was a bit rude to some passengers

2 delayed flights - hotel layover in a different country- lost baggage.

Silly to not even offer people water for free when they are paying so much for tickets.

You get what you pay for. It’s functional and gets you from point A to B in good comfort. However, food options are limited and cash only, Crew is a hit and miss .. they get your attention if you reach out.

Good leg room ... air conditioning was a bit warm don't Book row 8 ... no windows

They got to the terminal late, with no one on the arriving flight, boarded us late, and left us sitting there for 2 hours before they got us off the ground. They knew they were going to be late, yet they never got an updated flight plan from their head office until long after the flight was supposed to leave. They could have cut the delay in half, of at least let us stay in the terminal. Really just horrible planning.

The worst kind of budget airline. To be honest....the plane was not that bad. Would have been good to have some food choices and some water. What was by far the worse is the passengers/customers that this airline attracts. Coughing and spluttering all over one another with no masks. Just disgusting. Pay for a better carrier and get a better class of passenger.

The best part was Tony Fernandes actually reinstated the Buttercake menu. It has gone missing after Covid & i made a complaint in one of my Tweets back in October 2022. Both flight D170 & D171 landed very smoothly- kudos to both pilots!

The worst experience in any flight I have ever had, delayed for more than 10 hours, lost my other flight so I lost one day during my trip. Didn’t gave me facilities with my luggage either. Never again

I was next to a quite large person. Soni essentially had 2/3 of my seat for myself and couldn't sit properly. Even though there were some other seat available, the staff refuse that I occupy another seat.

Pros: The staff was very friendly. Cons: Long delay. The food is terrible.

I’m a frequent Traveler on all types of airlines, including budget. This was the worst flight experience I’ve ever had. Something was wrong with AirAsia’s systems and we were the whole flight was rescheduled to the following day, the third flight it happened to. Apart from an email which gave the new date the web and app said the original flight date which meant that there were hundreds of people queueing at the airport to try and find out what was going on. People waited six hours to talk to customer service who gave advice that didn’t match the web or app. Nightmare. just advertising for spending the extra hundred dollars I’ve ever seen.

11 Free (Or Cheap) Things To Do With Kids In Kuala Lumpur

Planning a weekend on a budget can be hard. Add a couple of kids to that equation, and it can seem near impossible.

But don’t worry – if you live in or near Kuala Lumpur, there are plenty of activities available for families on a budget:

1. Petrosains

Source: Petrosains

Are you in your twenties or thirties? If so, you may remember school trips to Petrosains during years gone by. Petrosains, which has been around since 1999, has gone through a few changes since then, but its aim remains the same: to inspire a love for science and learning. Kids (and reminiscing adults) will enjoy exhibits like the Geotime Diorama, which features an animatronic T-Rex, as well as other interactive installations and workshops.

Here’s a table of Petrosains ticket price for Malaysians;

And what the pricing looks like for non-Malaysians

2. Islamic Arts Museum Kuala Lumpur

Source: Islamic Arts Museum Malaysia

Bring your kids down to the Children’s Library , where they’ll find a variety of books on science, art, architecture, history, as well as those on Islam and Islamic arts. Every day, the library holds a free art session for children and grown-ups to complete together. On weekends, the library organises a storytelling and arts & craft session related to the weekly theme. Admission to the weekend sessions is free, but you’ll have to register beforehand as limited seats are available.

Price: Free (children 6 and under), RM10 (students with ID), RM20 (adult), RM10 (senior citizens), RM20 (non-Malaysian senior citizens)

3. Bank Negara Malaysia Museum and Art Gallery

Source: BNM Museum and Art Gallery

Financial literacy starts when you’re young. The Bank Negara Malaysia Museum and Art Gallery houses many hands-on activities that aim to educate and entertain. Walk through the RM1 million tunnel at the Children’s Gallery, or play the ‘Barter Trade’ game at the Numismatics Gallery. The museum also offers free arts and craft programmes on certain days, but you’ll need to sign up beforehand.

Price: Free admission

4. TTDI Library

Source: Perpustakaan Kuala Lumpur

Your children will probably find something in the TTDI Library to entertain them – even if they don’t like reading. The library, which reopened recently after a period of renovation, has gotten a bunch of upgrades. You’ll find interactive tables, a games lounge (with FIFA 19 available) and a cinema room.

Price: Free

5. Perdana Botanical Gardens

Source: Perdana Botanical Garden

The Lake Gardens are worth a visit if you’re tired of the smog and concrete of Kuala Lumpur. Lakes, fountains, bamboo houses, waterfalls, playgrounds – KL’s oldest public park has plenty to offer.

6. Royal Malaysian Police Museum

Source: KL Magazine

This small, unassuming museum is located just on the outskirts of the Botanical Gardens. Here, you can view the evolution of the Malaysian police force from as far back as the Portuguese and Dutch colonial eras. One of its most impressive exhibit is the armoury, which is filled with police firearms and melee weapons. Children will be especially fascinated by the armoured military vehicles outside on the museum grounds.

7. Kepong Metropolitan Park

Souce: Visit KL

This is a huge recreational park that is set around a 57-hectare lake. It’s a popular spot for flying kites, which can be purchased at the entrance of the park. You’ll also find several observation towers (to appreciate the view and populate your social media feeds), two playgrounds, and tracks for jogging and cycling.

8. KLCC Park

Source: Suria KLCC

The KLCC Park has several amenities that will keep children entertained. There’s a two-acre playground, waterfalls and a wading pool. Kids will especially enjoy the fountain water shows that run daily from 7.30 p.m. to 10 p.m.

9. Volunteer for PERTIWI

Source: PERTIWI

Volunteering as a family could give your children valuable life experiences, while helping others in need. The PERTIWI Soup Kitchen feeds between 500 and 700 homeless and hard-core poor individuals four times a week in KL. Volunteers are assigned various duties to help out.

10. Volunteer for Free Tree Society

Source: Free Tree Society

The Free Tree Society gives away free trees to the public in order to encourage biodiversity and a love of nature. Kids are encouraged to join in the volunteer work, which involves planting activities like propagation or nursery maintenance.

Source: IKEA

Don’t scoff. To many Malaysians, IKEA is something of a family outing destination. Here, both children and adults can spend hours playing make-believe. And if your kids are feeling peckish, IKEA has affordable snacks and beverages to tide them in until mealtime.

Price: Free (if you don’t buy anything)
