Is Dubai expensive? What to budget & how to save when visiting

Dubai city buildings at night

With palatial five-star hotels and stunning skyscrapers dominating its skyline, Dubai is known for its glitz and glamor. It’s perceived to be pricier than most cities, but you can still explore the Gulf emirate on a modest budget.

Depending on where you stay and eat , and what you plan to do in Dubai, we’ve got tips to help you stretch your dollar. From flights and accommodation to food and transportation, we’ve broken down each part of your budget to show you how much your trip to Dubai could cost.

How much are flights to Dubai?

Dubai is a popular layover destination, thanks to its sweet spot on the world map. In terms of airfare, a direct flight on Emirates Economy class from New York City to Dubai costs around $1,000. If you’re traveling from New Delhi to Dubai on the same airline, your flight could set you back around $340.

To ensure your airfare remains low, consider non-direct flights or budget airlines like FlyDubai or Air Arabia. Consider traveling between June and August if you don’t mind the heat. The off-peak season coincides with Dubai’s searing summer months, so hotels and flights see steep discounts. Avoid November to April, when prices surge due to the year-end holidays and cooler months.

Snap up pashminas, attars and Arabian sandals, or pack home spices (specifically saffron) from Dubai Spice Souk . And if you love gold, Deira’s Gold Souk is a major draw. Top 5 airlines flying to dubai.

Staff were friendly, and provided great service. The food was plentiful and delicious. Food could have been hotter.

More leg room and comfortable seats at least for long flights

The entertainment selections are amazing. But the live TV is sometimes spotty. If you’re going to have it, then have it. If you can’t make it consistent, then, perhaps it’s better not to have it. The crew are always cordial when approached, but they seem to do the minimum and sit around, talking to each other in the back of the plane during the flight. I realize that delays are not always predictable, but I missed my flight in Dubai because we left 90 minutes late from Washington. I will say that Emirates took very good care of me in Dubai. But I would rather not be delayed.

Probably the best flight I’ve ever been on. Emirates first class is leagues beyond British airways and Lufthansa’s.

Great flight. Comfortable seats, courteous service, and excellent selection for entertainment.

Serving food took so long . Almost time close to lend. Plus during landing air pressure in cabin cuss ear blocked took long time to unblock.

Emirates is usually on time, but not this trip. Also, during the flight the attendants disappear unless called upon. Very strange. I have watched the quality of Emirates service diminish over the last five years.

Food was not great. Crew members were created hassle with attitude at the gates and wasted my valuable time. I have been traveling in Emirates airlines many times. Over all not happy flying in Emirates airlines this time. Seats are very small and not comfortable. Seats looks like very very old and congested. It would be nice if they fix these kind of issues. I hope my next trip will be hassle free and comfortable journey in Emirates airlines. Thank you.

CREW manager was rude and nasty Crew was not friendly either and had discriminatory attitude.

We had a connecting flight which is got delayed they didn’t transfer me to another flight and up I have to by 3 new tickets and I have to pay extra luggage fees cost me rs 100000

Carly the flight attendant was extremely helpful and very accommodating to passengers on the flight from what I noticed. Couldn't be more satisfied with the service and assistance from Delta's flight attendant, Thanks again Carly!!

I didn’t not like that I could not select my seat and ended up with the worse seat.

I didn’t like that I could not select my seat and was assigned a seat when I checked in at LAX

Delta did an awful job w logistics at DTW. Missed connection. We were there an hour early. SUCKED

Inflight entertainment stopped working as we taxi to runway and never worked again until landing and taxi to gate. Grrrr

Had to run to make it only to have the flight delayed to wait for all the late connectors Second drink service skipped up

Boarding was a sh!t show. JFK BOARDING was awful. The agent called three sections at a time Clogging the area then yelling at people to not block the walk way. How are you going to call delta one , premium select and comfort plus at once and the yell at highest paying passengers. Need to do a lot better and the flight attendants in the galley need to understand that their voices travel. They were talking about others and everyone in the cabin heard them

Uncomfortable seats on 14 hour flight. Mediocre food. On time and great crew.

Please see my lengthy description on MSP to Atlanta survey. Tailbone is killing me from old hard seats. Seat would not recline and were not near exit row. Entertainment did not work properly and couldn’t use. No audio and touch screen failed. 3 plus hours of discomfort in narrower seats than previous flight not in comfort plus. Very dissatisfied and deserve comfort plus charges refunds, at the very least, for both my wife and I. The plane needs to be retired. Please feel free to contact me directly for further details.

MSP to Atlanta was much better than Atlanta to St. Kitts. Paid $180 each for myself and wife for Delta comfort from Atlanta to St. Kitts. Seats were more narrow and obviously old and worn out. Tailbone is killing me. Seat would not recline. Seats behind reclined and we were not an exit row or in front of an exit row. Entertainment did not work in that the movie jumped forward and back and there was no audio. The plug in the arm rest was loose. Flight attendant tried “resetting” the video for my seat but no good. She never checked back. Someone else near me had the same issue. Touch screen was unresponsive. No where near as comfortable as MSP to Atlanta flight. 3 plus hrs. flight time without the basic amenities and not even remotely close to comfortable but paid for Comfort plus. I will be very disappointed if I have the same on my return “Comfort Plus” flight St. Kitts to Atlanta. At the very least my wife and I should be refunded for round trip “Comfort Plus” charges. Please feel free to contact me directly for more details.

Not impressed. Only allowed one carry on on such a long flight.

The flight was good but my neighbor had the vent open full power for the whole flight and because the air was blowing from the side instead of from the top and I got very cold and ended up with a sore throat.

Bad experience with the delay n long wait time for connecting flight after missing the connection flight from Doha.

Wore experience due to delay and took me 3 days to reach my destination.

All over with Qatar airlines my experience was really bad due to delays and then putting me on different airlines and after 8 hours of wait I had to listen to their is no plane to fly for another 24 hours. Wore experience ever.

Excellent will be flying again in May with Qatar. to Botswana.

Ultimate customer care humble and excellent service oriented crew , perfect timing maintained by the crew . My profound appreciation.

Asian Veng meal have Non Veg items which is not ok. Pure veg meals option are too less and they have inclusion of Vedgan and Lactos etc... which is taste less

Very bad. We booked 8 months in advance for 2 people but couldn’t get seats together. Food was so bad I couldn’t even eat.

Okay not so good or great. The flight operated by Indigo is worst from boarding to luggage handling and food. Damaged one luggage and delayed another luggage. Still did not get it, since 2 days.

Quality of service on board was very inconsistent. FA service primarily seemed robotic and they barely engaged with passengers

I’m unclear why I had to pay extra for assigned seats as Turkish airlines did not honor the seating. We were placed across the aisle from each other on TK 34, and were seated behind one another on TK 694. Because my name was misspelled on e-ticket (Klawiter, instead of Klawitter) I could not log onto website to get the connection gate number in Istanbul. The monitors in the airport were a jumbled mess 1/2 Arabic and 1/2 English.

On line check in needs a lot of improvement. I tried and gave up.

Food not good, flight attendants not the best, not accommodating very ruff

the female flight attendant was racist towards me. I could tell she treated the two other passengers next to me with more softness.

Oh my god! For an13 hour flight they serve you food just one time. Also don’t be thirsty they give you a little small cup of soda to drink. They seem like their goal is to feed you one so they don’t have to be bothered with you. It quite surprise for such a long flight there are several times to eat at least three and the food was well lackluster. The food and lack of offering drinks which were always hot no ice provided.

We were traveling first class. Checkin counter lady and her manager, both were in bad mood and did not treat us well about checking in the handbag. The gate agent took care of it right away. I travel Turkish twice a year in first class. No one has ever refused to check in the hand bag. Not sure, why this agent and her manager refused. Everything else was excellent.

The 787 economy was a disaster for long haul. The space was too little compared to 777 or 747. Also the extremely low tray table behind the seat made any dining effort a nightmare. However, the movies were up to date, and the food taste was good, despite of terrible serving process caused by small space.

A little bit more comfort. It’s tight space around the seats. But all else is great and a smooth flight!

0ur assigned seats were given to other individuals when we boarded the plane. We were given new boarding passes with new seats all the way at the back of the plane. The reason given to us was that there were issues with the seats. We found out that there were no issues, and someone else's were seated on those.

Flight delayed for 2 hours due to a part. The plane sat waiting for boarding for a long time and during final preflight inspection the issue was found. Why not do the preflight inspection sooner if you know the plane is being used?

The flight experience was very good! Especially the United Club!

Overall it was good. The flight was bumpy at times, but the pilot made us aware every time. As a result, no snacks/drinks were made available. Seats were tight but that’s okay as I had a window seat.

Plane didn’t even make it off the ground. We all had to get off and walk to a different terminal (lots of confusion) to get on a different plane. Landed fairly late, connections missed.

the head jack on my seat didn't work and the power outlet didn't work for my seat

All good except paid for wifi that did not work

Beverage and food services are excellent. We enjoy paying the extra for economy plus for the 3 inches more leg room to be exact.

Left 2 hours later for delayed I had to take care a kid with special need since people don’t want to move to accommodate the rest of the family. . It wasn’t bad but that made me upset that people can be that selfish.

The crew were really great, but the 4 hour delay in small chunks was the worst.

They did get us booked on a later flight, but it made us miss our connecting flight. So, we had to stay and another state overnight with no luggage or clothes. Because they kept our luggage at airport for next flight on the next day.

Is Dubai Expensive to Visit? The Cost of Travelling in 2024

cost of travel to dubai

If you’re considering Dubai as your next holiday destination, some important questions to ask yourself are: Is Dubai expensive to visit? Or is it possible to visit Dubai on a small budget? You will find the answers to all of your questions in this post.

Dubai is an increasingly popular city in the United Arab Emirates and to be honest, this isn’t the cheapest destination in Asia , nor is the U.A.E. the cheapest country that you can visit.

After all, Dubai is famous for its luxury tourism, and it’s home to the Burj Al Arab – the only 7-star hotel in the world. This city has often been dubbed the Playground of Millionaires and the City of Gold .

However, this doesn’t mean that only millionaires can afford a visit to this city. The cost of travelling in Dubai widely depends on the decisions that you make and your style of travelling . Dubai is a city where you can easily spend thousands of dollars a day, but it’s also possible to travel here on a much smaller budget.

I visited Dubai on a budget on the way back to Belgium from Nepal , and although I did spend more than I usually do when I travel, I was able to limit my expenses!

This post will give you a better idea of how expensive Dubai is to visit , how much things cost in this city and how you can save money during your trip to Dubai .

How Expensive is Dubai for Tourists: The Cost of Travelling in Dubai

Is Dubai expensive to travel

Let’s look at the vacation cost in Dubai. How expensive exactly is Dubai for tourists? And is it possible to visit Dubai on a tight backpacker’s budget?

The short answer to the question of how expensive Dubai is for tourists is that you will need anything between USD 280 (shoestring backpacker budget) and USD 1400 (mid-range budget) per week if you’re planning on travelling to Dubai.

This budget does not include activities, however. But if you’re travelling with two people or more, you will be able to cut down some costs by sharing a room or taxi.

As mentioned in the introduction, the cost of travel in Dubai depends on your travel style. To make it a little more clear, I divided this post into three sections:

  • Travelling in Dubai on a tight backpacker’s budget (USD 40 to USD 50 per day)
  • Travelling in Dubai on a mid-range budget (USD 70 to USD 200 per day)
  • Travelling in Dubai in luxury (the sky is the limit)

backpacking in Dubai

Travelling in Dubai on a backpacker’s budget

Although Dubai is not your typical backpacker’s destination, it’s an easy stopover on the way to Asia and it’s possible to visit this city on a smaller budget .

This being said, Dubai is not a very backpacker-friendly city and you will have to spend more money here compared to many other countries. So this may not be the best place to stay for a long time if you’re on a super tight budget.

🏣 Hostel prices

The best way to cut costs in Dubai is by saving on accommodation and staying in hostels.

You can find hostels with prices between USD 8 and USD 25 per night for a bed in a dorm . These can be found in nearly any area in the city, but you may pay more depending on the location.

  • Dubai Eye ( ⭐   8.9)
  • Hostel World Capsule ( ⭐   8.3)
  • Robin Hostel Dubai ( ⭐  8.3)

🍛 The cost of cheap restaurants in Dubai

When it comes to food, there are plenty of places where you can eat street food for less than USD 5 .

A cheap restaurant will cost you around USD 12 per person. So there’s more than luxury restaurants and bling-bling alone in Dubai!

🎡 Cheap and free activities in Dubai

There are also many cheap and even free things to do in Dubai . You will find some examples below:

  • Burj Khalifa and its fountains : As long as you don’t go to the top levels of the Burj Khalifa, you can see the world’s largest building along with its fountains and the daily fountain show for free. This is one of the most famous landmarks in Asia !
  • Dubai Mall : The Dubai Mall is located inside the Burj Khalifa, and it’s free to visit too (as long as you don’t buy anything, of course).
  • Gold souks : The same applies to the gold souks, as long as you don’t buy anything, these are free to visit.
  • Dubai Frame : You can see the Dubai Frame for free but you will have to pay an entrance fee of 50 AED if you want to enter this landmark.
  • Burj Al Arab : You can also see the world’s only 7-star hotel for free. It just costs (a lot of) money if you want to stay or eat here.
  • Jumeirah Mosque : This is one of the most famous mosques in Dubai and there’s no entry fee to visit it. It does cost money if you want to take a guided tour.
  • Dubai Marina : This is one of the most popular areas in Dubai and taking a stroll here is completely free.

🚗 Getting around Dubai on a budget

Finally, when it comes to getting around the city, the cheapest way to do so is by taking the metro (which is great). You can get a day ticket for 20 AED (USD 5,45).

Keep in mind, though, that you might have to take a taxi or Uber from time to time and these are not that cheap.

👉 Can Dubai be cheap? The cost of visiting Dubai on a tight backpacker’s budget

Taking into account all the information above, visiting Dubai on a tight backpacker’s budget will cost you a minimum of around USD 40 to USD 50 per day (or USD 280 to USD 350 a week).

This can be done by staying in dorms, eating in cheap restaurants without consuming alcohol and getting around using the metro.

Entry tickets are not included in this budget, but I hardly spent anything on entry tickets when I visited Dubai. There are plenty of free things to do as well.

Tip: The best way to visit Dubai if you’re on a limited budget is by visiting this city during a short stopover to another (cheaper) destination, which is what I did. It’s perfectly possible to see much of what this city has to offer in just 2 or 3 days.

Is it expensive to visit Dubai

Visiting Dubai on a mid-range budget

If you have a larger, mid-range budget, you will find plenty of nice hotels, cosy restaurants and fun activities to do in Dubai.

🏣 Average hotel prices in Dubai

You will find numerous hotels with prices ranging between USD 50 and USD 120 per night nearly anywhere in the city. You will get a nice hotel for this price.

This being said, it speaks for itself that the higher your budget, the better your hotel will be.

  • Al Seef Heritage Hotel ( ⭐  8.3)
  • Heritage Home Guest House ( ⭐  8.1)
  • Holiday Inn Express Safa Park ( ⭐  7.9)

🍛 Eating out on a mid-range budget in Dubai

Expect to pay around USD 30 per person for a meal in a nice mid-range restaurant in Dubai.

There are, however, many cheaper restaurants (or street food) as well as more expensive ones. So make sure to determine your budget and look around.

🎡 How much do entry tickets and activities cost in Dubai

When it comes to the price of activities , you will find both cheap as well as more expensive things to do in Dubai . You can find some popular examples below:

  • Burj Khalifa : Prices range between 20 AED (USD 5,45) and 769 AED (USD 209,37), depending on the experience you choose. The cheapest tickets will bring you to the Burj Khalifa’s 125th and 124th floors. While the most expensive ones will take you to the 154th, 153rd and 152nd levels. Here, you will find the world’s highest lounge.
  • Dubai Aquarium : Prices start at a whopping 199 AED (USD 54,18) per person to visit the Dubai Aquarium.
  • Dubai Frame : The entry ticket costs 50 AED (USD 13,61), which is quite reasonable compared to the other entry prices.
  • Desert safari : The costs of a desert safari range between 250 AED (USD 68) and 1000 AED (USD 272). This depends on the company you book it with, what’s included and how luxurious you want it to be.
  • Aura Skypool : A visit to this beautiful infinity pool with a view over the skyline of Dubai will cost a minimum of 200 AED (USD 54,45) per person.

🚗 Getting around Dubai on a mid-range budget

Although the metro is great, if you have a bigger budget, you can also opt to rent a car in Dubai . This will give you more flexibility and it will help you save some time as well.

You can expect to pay a minimum of USD 30 for one day .

If you decide to rent a car, I recommend using  Discover Cars  to find the best rates. This company compares car rental companies so that you can get the best price.

👉 The cost of visiting Dubai on a mid-range budget

You can expect to pay anything between USD 70 and USD 200 per day* (or USD 490 and USD 1400 per week) to visit Dubai on a mid-range budget.

This only includes accommodation, food and transportation, though. The price of activities is not included .

* This estimate was made for a solo traveller . If you’re travelling as a couple, with a friend or with a group you will be able to share accommodation costs, which will make your trip somewhat cheaper.

Tip : Make sure to book your tickets in advance if you want to visit the Burj Khalifa. There is a ticket counter onsite, but tickets tend to sell out very quickly.

Burj Khalifa and Gold Souks

The cost of a luxury trip to Dubai

If you’re a billionaire and are up for a really luxurious trip, then Dubai is a city where you will find exactly what you are looking for!

After all, this city is known for its luxury and bling-bling. You could easily spend a couple of thousands or even ten thousands of dollars a day here.

🏣 Expensive hotels in Dubai

Some of the most expensive hotels in Dubai are Jumeirah Al Qasr (from USD 320/night to USD 9000/night), Burj Al-Arab (from USD 1100/night to USD 5100/a night), Atlantis The Palm (from USD 575/night to USD 1000/night) and Rixos The Palm (USD 600 to USD 1300).

There are other luxury hotels that are a little more affordable too, though. Some examples are the JW Marriott Marquis Hotel , Lemon Tree Hotel and Leva Hotel & Suites .

Luxury hotels are one of the things Dubai is famous for. So if you can afford to stay in these, you will have an abundance of choices!

You can opt for underwater suites, rooms with a view of the Burj Khalifa or the Dubai Marina, luxurious lofts and apartments, the only 7-star hotel in the world (the Burj Al-Arab ) and more.

🍛 Luxurious restaurants in Dubai

This city is also full of luxury restaurants like the underwater restaurant Ossiano , Al Mahara and the restaurants located in the famous Burj Al-Arab .

The average costs per person in luxurious restaurants range between USD 135 and USD 190 .

All in all, there is no shortage of luxurious and decadent restaurants in Dubai, and if you want to try dishes from Michelin-starred chefs, this is the city to go!

🎡 Luxury activities in Dubai

When it comes to luxury activities, it comes as no surprise that Dubai has an abundance of these as well!

From private air charters to super-yacht cruises , luxury desert safaris , hot air balloon flights , luxury trips combining Dubai and t he Maldives and much more, you will find plenty of luxurious things to do in Dubai.

You just need to be super rich to be able to afford them.

How Much Does it Cost to Travel to Dubai?

Apart from the cost of accommodation, transport, food and activities, another important thing to consider is the cost of the flight to get to Dubai in the first place.

This depends on where you’re flying from when you’re visiting Dubai, how flexible you are and when you book your tickets. Flights tend to be more expensive during the high season. If you’re flexible, you could opt to fly on the cheapest available date of the week or month.

Depending on where you’re from and the season you’re travelling, a round-trip to Dubai should cost you:

  • New York to Dubai: USD 700 to USD 1000
  • London to Dubai:  USD 300 to USD 600
  • Sydney to Dubai: USD 750 to USD 1200
  • New Delhi to Dubai: USD 200 to USD 350

It’s good to know that due to the conflict in Ukraine, global oil prices have risen in the last year. This is causing flights to be more expensive than normal. I adapted the prices mentioned above.

Tip : An easy way to find the cheapest flights is by using Skyscanner . This website enables you to compare flight fares across the internet. I would recommend booking through the official website of the airline to avoid problems, though.

Tips to Save Money in Dubai

Dubai clearly isn’t the cheapest holiday destination out there. However, a trip to this city doesn’t have to be crazy expensive either.

There are numerous ways to cut the costs of your stay in Dubai. You will find 7 easy ways to save money in Dubai below.

1. Stay at budget accommodation

Dubai is famous for its abundance of luxury hotels and resorts but it speaks for itself that staying here will cost you a lot of money.

One of the easiest ways to travel on a smaller budget is by staying in budget hotels, hostels or dorms.

2. Watch your dining budget

Just like with the accommodation, you will find plenty of expensive restaurants in Dubai BUT there are plenty of affordable restaurants in this city too!

Researching the cheap restaurants to eat at in Dubai and opting for street food will save you a lot of money.

3. Take the metro

Dubai isn’t a very walkable city, as the distances you will have to cover are huge.

There may be plenty of taxis and Ubers in the streets of this city but the cheapest way to get around Dubai is by taking the metro.

Dubai has some of the nicest and cleanest metros I’ve ever taken, so it will be a very comfortable ride (and the metro has AC, which is great when it’s hot)!

4. Visit Dubai during the low season

It will be SUPER hot (40°C to 50°C or 104°F to 122°F), but if you visit Dubai in June, July or August, you will be able to book hotels for a cheaper price.

It’s good to know that there’s AC practically everywhere in Dubai.

5. Don’t drink alcohol

Alcohol tends to be quite expensive in Dubai. So an efficient way of saving some money is by sticking to non-alcoholic drinks during your stay in this city.

6. Look for free places to visit

Another great way of saving costs on a visit to Dubai is by looking for free activities.

Going to the public beach, visiting the park and strolling along the Dubai Marina , for example, are some nice things to do that won’t cost you any money.

7. Don’t go shopping

This one might be easier said than done if you enjoy shopping. After all, Dubai is home to the world’s largest shopping mall.

However, if you’re on a tight budget, it’s better to avoid coming here unless you’re up for some window shopping instead because Dubai isn’t the cheapest country to buy things.

Dubai Marina

Is It Expensive to Live in Dubai?

One of the things that makes Dubai such a popular destination for expats is that there is no income tax in this city. This being said, Dubai may be a tax haven, but that doesn’t mean it’s cheap to live here.

Dubai has been ranked 31st on the list of the most expensive cities to live and work in for expats . However, it’s less expensive compared to cities like New York City, London and Singapore.

On average, a one-bedroom apartment outside of the city centre will cost you around USD 900, and you can expect to pay around USD 900 in monthly costs as well. This means you will need an average of USD 1800 to live in Dubai.

It all depends on your lifestyle though, and you can come by with less or more money as well.

Is Dubai Expensive to Travel to? Final Thoughts

As you can see, Dubai is one of the more expensive destinations out there. However, there are ways to cut costs and save some money.

Travelling on a backpacker’s budget in Dubai won’t be the same as it’s in Southeast Asia, for example. However, it’s still possible to travel here without spending loads of money.

This being said, compared to other major cities like London, New York and Paris , Dubai actually isn’t that expensive. You will pay around the same amount of money or sometimes even more in some other large cities.

I hope that this post helped you to get a better idea of the cost of travelling in Dubai. Let me know your thoughts or any questions you may have in the comments.

7-Day Dubai Trip Costs & Tips To Save Money When Visiting Dubai

Wondering if Dubai is expensive for tourists and how much money you should take for a week in Dubai? Below you’ll find my 7-day Dubai trip costs in AED, USD and GBP, and helpful tips to save money when visiting the city.

When I started planning my trip to Dubai, I wasn’t sure how much it would cost me.

Dubai is known for being an expensive destination, thanks to its abundant wealth, luxury shopping, upscale skyscrapers, and a staggering range of top-notch hotels.

As more and more people started vacationing in the so-called “City of Gold”, many of us started thinking about how affordable Dubai can be and also the possibility of making this dream come true.

I, finally, visited Dubai and had a fantastic time! I tracked all my Dubai travel expenses to write this post and give you a better idea of how much money you would spend on a trip to Dubai.

If you want to know the average cost of going to Dubai, I’ll tell you everything here. There is also a full breakdown of my Dubai trip costs.

Is Dubai expensive to visit?

Dubai is as expensive as other major cities in the world, such as New York, London, and Paris.

The difference is while in these three cities, there are several free things to do and you can simply walk around sightseeing, Dubai isn’t a walkable city and, basically, you have to pay to visit all the tourist attractions.

How Much Does it Cost to Go to Dubai?

As soon as I posted some pictures of Dubai on social media, my friends and followers got so excited.

They started sending me messages and in unison asking me: “Is Dubai expensive for tourists?”, and “How much does it cost to go to Dubai?”.

Your Dubai travel costs will vary according to your travel style. If you only stay in five-star hotels and resorts, go fine dining, and take taxis it will cost more than staying in three-star hotels, eating where the locals eat and using public transport.

If you’re concerned about how much money you will spend in Dubai, you should plan your Dubai travel budget carefully to be financially prepared for your trip.

Before showing my Dubai trip costs breakdown, let me give you a hint of your main expenses.

The first part of your budget to travel to Dubai will be spent on your round-trip flight tickets.

I bought the tickets with KLM, from London to Dubai, with a connection in Amsterdam less than one month in advance of my trip and paid a very good price, £290.

The average price of a direct round-trip ticket to Dubai, from London, is £499, with British Airways as well as Emirates. And from New York is US$950 with Emirates Airline.

Travel Insurance

It’s required by the United Arab Emirates government that all travellers must have travel insurance that includes COVID-19 coverage when visiting the country.

Don’t worry because it won’t cost you much, but can save you a couple of hundred bucks if you get sick, something unexpected happens, and your luggage gets lost or stolen.

World Nomads, one of the most popular travel insurance companies among independent travellers, is usually my personal choice.

I spent £64,80 on travel insurance on my one-week trip to Dubai.

Get a quote with World Nomads here .

SafetyWing , another company I sometimes use, also covers COVID-19 and quarantine outside of your home country (US$ 50/day for up to 10 days).

Accommodation

A big part of your budget to travel to Dubai will be the cost of your hotel room.

In my case, almost 30% of my 7-day Dubai trip costs were spent on accommodation.

It’s because hotels in Dubai aren’t cheap. Particularly during the Expo, when I visited it, and in the peak season (from December to February).

The average cost of a good 3-star hotel room in Dubai, for two people, with breakfast included is 700 AED (£157 / US$190).

But if you’re on a budget you can find a wide range of affordable hotels in the old town, where you can pay an average of 300 AED (£67 / US$82) for a double bed single room with breakfast.

I stayed in three different hotels in Dubai and in three distinct neighbourhoods because I wanted to explore the city better. I spent approximately 3,644 AED (£817 / US$992) on accommodation in Dubai.

Transportation

Your expenses with transportation in Dubai will not only depend on where you’ll be based in the city but also on the mode of transportation that you’ll use.

Dubai is a metropolis, and the most popular points of interest are spread out all over the city.

But Dubai has an excellent public transport network and it’s an easy city to navigate. You can take the metro, buses, tram, water buses and even the monorail.

If you hire a car or take taxis, they aren’t expensive, you can get to your destination much quicker. But it will add up to your Dubai trip costs.

I mainly used taxis to get around Dubai, but I also took the metro. I spent 833 AED (£187 / US$227) .

Tours and Tourist Attractions

Of course, once you’re in Dubai you’ll want to take tours, visit some tourist attractions and have wonderful experiences.

Climbing to the top of Burj Khalifa (the tallest building in the world), admiring the stunning view of the palm islands from The View at The Palm, strolling around the picturesque Dubai Miracle Garden, riding the glass slide at Sky Views, and taking a desert safari tour, are some of the best things to do in Dubai.

To have a better idea of how much money these things cost in Dubai, here are some examples:

  • The Top of the Burj Khalifa : 159 AED (£35/ US$43)
  • Sky Views Dubai : 80 AED (£18 / US$22)
  • Dubai Miracle Garden : 95 AED (£21 / US$26)
  • The View at The Palm : 100 AED (£22 / US$27)
  • Dubai Hop-On Hop-Off Bus : 255 AED (£58 / US$68)
  • Private Dubai City Tour :382 AED (£87 / US$104)
  • Day Trip to Abu Dhabi : 445 AED (£100 / US$120)
  • Desert Safari with Camel Ride, Sand Surf & BBQ : 297 AED (£66 / US$81)
  • Museum of the Future : 149 AED (£33 / US$41)
  • Sunbed at JBR Beach: 120 AED (£27 / US$33)

I spent 3064 AED (£682 / US$834) on tours and attractions, about 29% of the total cost of my 1-week trip to Dubai.

Food and Drinks

With a wide range of restaurants in Dubai, you’ll be spoiled for choice when visiting the city.

There are cheap restaurants, popular restaurant chains (McDonald’s, Pizza Hut, Nando’s, etc) and high-end restaurants.

The amount of money you’ll spend on food and drinks in Dubai will depend on the restaurants you go to. It can be as little as 20 AED (£4.50 / US$5.50), if you go to a simple restaurant, or as much as 1225 AED (£274 / US$333) if you opt for a ‘7-course Tasting Menu’ at Atmosphere , the world’s tallest restaurant at Burj Khalifa.

The prices of drinks will depend on the restaurant. Alcoholic beverages are more expensive in Dubai than in other major cities though.

I only went fine dining once in Dubai. Some days I was so tired and hungry, that I didn’t make much effort to find a nice restaurant. I ended up eating, for example, at McDonald’s, something that I don’t do back home.

I spent 1072 AED (£240 / US$292) on food and drinks in Dubai.

The total amount spent on food and drinks was 1072 AED (£241 / US$292) .

It’s an average of 153 AED (£34 / US$41) per day and I think it’s excellent.

Again, sometimes I didn’t put too much effort into looking for a nice restaurant.

I believe that you can put on your Dubai travel budget 200 AED (£45 / US$55) to spend per day on food and drinks, if you have breakfast included in your hotel reservation, like me.

How Much is a 1-Week Trip To Dubai?

I’d say that the average cost of a trip to Dubai, for a week, per person, in 2023, ranges between £650 – 970 (US$795 – 1,186) for budget travellers. For a mid-range budget, expect to spend around £1,300 – 1,950 (US$1,590 – 2,385), and for a luxury holiday anything from £3,800 (US$4,650) upwards.

A couple can expect to spend an average of £3,300 (US$4,036) for a week in Dubai.

* Airline tickets not included.

The total cost of my 7-day Dubai trip was 10,575 AED (£2,354/ US$2,879 ), including the airline tickets and travel insurance.

Of course, I could’ve spent less money, if I had booked my hotels in advance (as I always do), taken the metro more, eaten where locals eat and not gone diving at Deep Dive Dubai.

But this is why I travel for. To have unique experiences and create memories that I will treasure forever. So should you!

Tips for Saving Money When Visiting Dubai

If you’re travelling to Dubai on a budget, let me give you some advice based on my recent trip and travel expertise.

The best time to visit Dubai is from December to February when is not too hot. But this is also when hotel rooms are more expensive, especially during the holiday season.

If you want to save money on your trip to Dubai, you should avoid the peak season and go in November, March or early April.

I was there from the 15th to the 22nd of March and the weather was good, although on two days the temperature reached 36C. In the evenings there was a pleasant breeze.

Below are some more specific tips for saving money when travelling to Dubai.

If you want to save some money on airline tickets, you should book a flight with a connection. You can find great deals with KLM, Air France, Lufthansa, Swiss and Qatar Airways .

And if you’re in Europe, you can even fly to Dubai for less than £200 with low-cost carriers. Just book a ticket with Ryanair, Easy Jet or Wizz to Budapest, Vienna, Sophia, Athens, or Bucharest, for example, and from there book another ticket to Dubai with Wizz Air / Pegasus.

To find the best deals on airline tickets, go to Skyscanner , the website that I use, trust, and recommend.

To save money on accommodation in Dubai, my recommendation is to stay in the old town.

There are many cheap hotels and restaurants in Deira, which makes the area perfect for budget travellers.

It’s a bit far from most of Dubai’s points of interest, but you can use public transport. It’s also close to the airport and you can pay only 3 AED (£0.67 / US$0.82) on the metro from Deira to Dubai International Airport.

Another option is to stay in a hostel. There are great hostels in Dubai. This one at the marina has even a fitness centre, and this one is good too.

If you don’t want to spend much on tourist attractions, my recommendation is to put on your Dubai travel budget the ones that you really want to see and buy the tickets online in advance to save you some time.

Another option is to buy combo tickets, like this one for Dubai Aquarium + Burj Khalifa , or this one that you can choose from three to seven attractions.

When you arrive at Dubai Airport, get a free 1Gb tourist sim card at the immigration. With this sim card, you can use the internet on the metro, bus and taxis for free for 60min daily.

There’s free Wi-Fi everywhere and you might not need to top up your card during your stay.

P.S. : The free tourist sim card is very easy to activate and top up (via the Du app). It’s cancelled once you leave the country.

Undoubtedly the best way to save money in Dubai on transportation is to take public transport. Taxis only when you can’t easily reach the desired destination.

Go to the ticket booth at any metro station and buy the silver card instead of the red one as the rides are much cheaper and you can top up the card as much as you need.

Is Dubai Expensive? Budgeting for a Trip to Dubai

Is Dubai Expensive Budgeting tips

While some compare Dubai’s costliness to cities such as New York, London, and Paris, strategic planning can make for an enjoyable trip without stretching your budget. The main expenses to consider when visiting Dubai are accommodation, food, and transportation. By staying in budget hotels, skipping the shopping if you’re on a tight budget, and getting a combo ticket that includes Burj Khalifa tickets , you can save money while still experiencing the best Dubai has to offer .

When you compare Dubai’s costs with those of other major cities , you’ll realize they are actually quite similar. Regardless of whether you’re a luxury seeker or a budget-conscious explorer, Dubai has something for you, provided you plan and budget appropriately.

If you want to see a lot of attractions during your Dubai visit, you may want to purchase the Dubai Unlimited Pass , which gives you access to over 45 attractions over a 3 to 5-day period, or the iVenture Dubai Pass which offers great discounts as well . Book your airport transfer in advance to save stress upon arrival.

Accommodation Costs in Dubai

Accommodation Costs in Dubai

Let’s face it, the image of Dubai is really all about luxury accommodation, but in actual fact, Dubai offers a wide range of accommodation options for any budget. Whether you’re looking for a simple, clean place to rest your head or a lavish suite with all the amenities, Dubai has you covered. In essence, like most cities, your travel style goes a long way into determining your budget.

Just a heads up, hotel prices in Dubai can be a bit like a roller coaster. They go up and down based on stuff like the area where you’re staying, what time of year it is, and what kind of place you’re looking to crash at. For example, when it’s peak tourist season, prices can go through the roof because everyone wants to visit. But if you’re more of an off-peak kind of traveler, you might score some sweet deals, especially if you’re the type to book ahead of time.

Accommodation Costs in Dubai Luxury

So, here’s the thing. Where you decide to crash in Dubai can make a big difference to your wallet. If you’re all about being in the thick of it, staying in hotspots like Downtown Dubai or near Palm Jumeirah will cost you a bit more. But, on the bright side, you’ll be super close to all the must-see sights, which could mean you’ll save some cash on transport. Not too shabby, right?

Lastly, the type of accommodation you choose will significantly affect the price. Luxury resorts and five-star hotels offer a wide array of amenities, such as swimming pools, spas, gourmet restaurants, and personalized services, which all add to the cost. On the other hand, budget accommodations like hostels or guesthouses provide basic amenities at a much lower price, making them an excellent choice for budget-conscious travelers.

So, if you’re planning your Dubai adventure, remember to keep these things in mind. Pick a place to stay that fits your budget and vibes with your style. It’s all about finding what works for you and your wallet!

Budget Accommodation

Hey, guess what? Dubai isn’t only for the rich and famous. It’s got plenty of budget-friendly options too! There are a ton of affordable places to stay that come with all the essentials. We’re talking comfy beds, TVs for chill nights in, workspaces for those who can’t escape the email inbox, pools for a quick dip, gyms for the fitness lover, and even on-site restaurants or bars for easy eats and drinks.

The best part? These budget hotels are often super close to the city’s top sights, so you can see the best of Dubai without emptying your wallet. Pretty cool, right? The Ascot Hotel is a very budget-friendly choice in the heart of Dubai that gets good reviews.

Want to save some extra cash? Consider staying outside of Downtown Dubai where prices can get a bit steep. Just remember to factor in your transportation costs.

Mid Range Accommodation

If you’re looking for a mix of comfort and affordability, mid-range accommodations in Dubai are an excellent choice. These hotels offer stylish stays with quality services, ensuring a pleasant experience without stretching your budget too much. On average, mid-range accommodations in Dubai range from around $80 USD to $150 USD per night, with popular options including the Hilton Garden Inn, the Novotel, and the Ibis.

You can discover some of the best mid-range Dubai hotels like Arabian Courtyard Hotel & Spa , Crowne Plaza Dubai Marina , and Flora Inn Hotel Dubai Airport, among others, for a great stay in the city, all conveniently located near Dubai International Airport.

Luxury Accommodation

These properties offer extravagant amenities, such as steam showers, saunas, water parks, gourmet dining, private beaches, and even luxury car rentals. Our personal recommendations are the JW Marriott Marquis Hotel Dubai and the Habtoor Grand Resort, Autograph Collection. We stayed at both of these hotels and they were fantastic.

For those willing to splurge on opulent experiences, Dubai is home to some of the world’s most luxurious hotels, such as:

  • Jumeirah Al Qasr
  • Burj Al Arab
  • Atlantis The Palm
  • Rixos The Palm

While the costs can be significantly higher, the indulgent experiences and exceptional service at these luxury accommodations are truly unforgettable. Expect to pay between $500 to $1200 per night for a 5-star hotel. If the Burj Al Arab is on your bucket list, you can expect to shell out $2500 per night in high season.

Transportation Costs in Dubai

Transportation Costs in Dubai

How you choose to travel around in Dubai will impact the cost, with options that span from economical public transport to more costly taxis and Ubers. Flights to Dubai can also impact your overall budget, with prices depending on departure location, time of year, and airline.

If navigating the city poses a challenge and you have reservations about using public transport, you could also consider renting a car in Dubai, but we don’t think that is necessary unless you exploring further afield.

What Does a Flight Cost to Dubai?

Like most destinations these days, the cost of flights to Dubai can significantly fluctuate depending on factors such as your departure location, the time of year, and the airline you pick. The price of a round-trip economy class ticket from the US to Dubai can vary drastically. For example, it can range from $700 to over $1,500. Prices may also differ for travelers departing from other locations, such as London or Sydney, so it’s essential to research and compare prices before booking your flight. We recommend comparing prices on Skyscanner.

Renting a Car in Dubai

Renting a car in Dubai can be both convenient and cost-effective, allowing you to explore the city at your own pace without relying on public transport. Various factors influence the cost of renting a car, including the need for a driver, the type and age of the car, and how long you rent it for.

Keep in mind that renting a car may be more economical than using taxis or Uber to get around Dubai but you will also have to deal with parking which can be a real hassle.

Taxis and Ubers in Dubai

Taxis and Ubers, while convenient for short trips in Dubai, may come with a higher price tag compared to public transport or car rentals. The average Dubai cost per kilometer for a taxi is AED 1.82. 50 cents. However, when considering Dubai prices in comparison to other major cities, the cost of taxis in Dubai is relatively affordable, making them a viable option for certain trips or when convenience is a priority.

From grabbing a quick and tasty bite from a street food stall to splurging on a fancy dinner at a high-end restaurant, Dubai’s food scene is as diverse as it gets. Some top picks for cheap street eats in Dubai? You have to try the Cheese Vada Pav and Cheese Potato Oman Chips. If you’re in the mood for a sandwich, grab a Falafel Sandwich or a Samboosa. You’ll find these gems at places like Meena Bazaar and Sultan Dubai Falafel . So, go ahead and enjoy the local flavors without breaking the bank!

Mid-Range Food in Dubai

If you’re looking for a step beyond budget dining, Dubai’s mid-range cheap restaurants serve a multitude of cuisines at fair prices. Okay, so let’s talk about mid-range dining. Dubai has a ton of cool places where you can enjoy a wide variety of cuisines without breaking the bank.

Luxury Food in Dubai

Those with a penchant for fine dining will find Dubai’s luxury food scene a haven of exquisite cuisine coupled with outstanding service. High-end restaurants in Dubai can charge anywhere from $135 to $190 per person, with some even offering exclusive dishes like premium steaks and caviar at much higher prices.

With a variety of cuisines available, from Mediterranean and Asian to Middle Eastern and Indian, luxury dining in Dubai is a culinary adventure worth splurging on. Experience the flavors of the Middle East and beyond in this gastronomic paradise.

How Much Does Alcohol Cost in Dubai?

Alcohol in Dubai can be quite expensive, with prices varying depending on the venue. However, there are ways to save on drinking costs, such as visiting licensed restaurants, hotels, and bars attached to licensed hotels where alcohol is legally served.

Additionally, the recent removal of the 30% tax on alcohol sales by Dubai Municipality could mean lower prices in some bars and restaurants, so it’s worth checking specific venues for their current alcohol prices.

Cost of Activities in Dubai

Cost of Activities in Dubai

Dubai, located in the United Arab Emirates, caters to visitors across all budgets with a broad range of activities and attractions, from economically priced experiences to pricier options. Whether you’re looking to explore the city’s iconic landmarks like the Burj Khalifa, take a thrilling desert safari, or indulge in luxury shopping at the Dubai Mall, there’s something for everyone in this vibrant city, including a visit to the Dubai Miracle Garden.

One thing we did find is that a lot of the activities in Dubai vary in cost depending on what time of the year you visit. So, you may find some attractions more expensive in the high season. We found this strange.

How Expensive is it to visit the Burj Khalifa “At the Top”?

How Expensive is it to visit the Burj Khalifa

Visiting the Burj Khalifa “At the Top” is something you have to do when visiting Dubai. Be forewarned it can be a bit pricey, but it’s well worth the cost for the stunning views of the city from the world’s tallest building. Ticket prices range from $45 to $145 per person, depending on the experience you choose.

For example, the cheapest ticket with access to the 124 & 125 floors is $45 USD. But you have to be aware that sunset prices are significantly higher. If you want to go up between 3 pm to 6 pm you will pay $67 USD If you want to skip the line, that will cost you even more. On GetYourGuide they offer skip-the-line tickets for security and the elevator.

We did go up at sunset strictly for the photography opportunity but if you just want to see the incredible views I recommend skipping the prime-time entry and heading up after sunset, as Dubai at night is something to behold.

One thing we did notice is that tickets really sell out fast so you will want to make sure that you get yours well in advance , especially if you are visiting during high season. Also, if you plan on visiting the Dubai Aquarium & Underwater Zoo you can get a combo ticket that will save you money.

How expensive is it to visit Dubai’s Water parks?

How expensive are Dubai Water Parks

Dubai’s water parks are a big attraction if you are visiting with kids. It is good to know that the prices really vary on which water park you want to visit. For example, the Aquaventure Water Park at Atlantis The Palm is about $93 USD per person for a day pass, which is pretty steep. If you do want to visit make sure to get your ticket in advance as you can pay more if you get it on the day.

By the time you add on the cost of a locker, food, and drinks it can get pricey. For a family of 4, it can easily cost you around $350 USD for the day. It might actually be cheaper to book a hotel at Atlantis: The Palm if you plan on spending more than 1 day there as entrance to the waterpark is included in the hotel room cost.

There are other parks that are cheaper like the Wild Wadi which will only set you back about $60 USD a day.

Timing Your Dubai Visit: High Season vs. Low Season

Best time to visit Dubai

So, when you visit Dubai can really impact how much cash you’ll need to splash. The high season, which is from November to March, is when Dubai is packed with tourists, and prices for hotels are sky-high. But if you’re okay with the heat, you could consider visiting during the low season, from June to August. The city’s a lot less busy, and you can score some killer deals on accommodation and attractions.

So, if you’re flexible with your dates, why not plan your trip during the low season? You’ll get to enjoy Dubai without the crowds and save some dough while you’re at it! Just don’t forget to pack a towel to wipe off the sweat.

Free and Affordable Activities in Dubai

Free activities in Dubai

For the budget-conscious traveler, Dubai provides an ample selection of free and low-cost activities, enabling a rich experience of the city without going overboard on spending. Some popular options include strolling along the Dubai Marina, visiting the public beach, and exploring the park.

Additionally, many tourist attractions and museums offer free or discounted entry, making it possible to enjoy the best of Dubai without breaking the bank. This includes places like the Dubai Museum, the Al Fahidi Fort, and the Dubai Aquarium & Underwater Zoo. There are also certain days and times when entrance fees are reduced or even waived, so it’s a good idea to check these details before your visit. Moreover, some tour packages include admission fees in their prices, which can be a cost-effective way to see multiple attractions.

Splurging on Luxury Experiences

Luxury Experiences in Dubai

If indulging in luxurious experiences is your thing, Dubai makes for an ideal destination. From luxurious accommodations and fine dining to exclusive activities like helicopter tours, private yacht cruises, and designer shopping, there’s no shortage of opportunities to splurge on unforgettable experiences in this dazzling city.

Dubai is home to some of the most opulent hotels in the world, where you can experience unparalleled comfort and service. You can dine in Michelin-starred restaurants, savoring exquisite dishes prepared by world-renowned chefs. The city’s luxury shopping scene is also unmatched, with high-end boutiques and designer stores lining its streets and malls.

If you’re seeking adventure, you can take to the skies on a private helicopter tour , getting a bird’s eye view of the city’s iconic skyline, or sail along the coastline on a private yacht cruise , basking in the warm Arabian sun. For those who prefer land-based activities, you can enjoy a round of golf at one of Dubai’s premier golf courses or take a luxury desert safari , experiencing the thrill of dune bashing in a luxury 4×4 vehicle.

Best time to Visit Dubai

dubai travel cost

We visited Dubai in August, and quite frankly, the heat was unbearable. We could only be outside for a maximum of ten minutes. Although you may find cheaper rates during this time, we don’t really advise traveling in the summer months due to the extreme temperatures. Even the sea was too warm to enjoy. We couldn’t even fully enjoy a lot of the free outdoor activities due to the heat. And we definitley couldn’t walk anywhere.

Ideally, the best time to visit Dubai is between November and April when the weather is cooler and more conducive for outdoor activities. But you will find higher prices. Try traveling in the shoulder seasons to get a good mix of both worlds.

This post on Dubai travel cost is just one part of our larger one week trip to the UAE. We found a budget airline for our round trip from Tirana, where we live, to the United Arab Emirates. Although our first destination was Dubai, we chose to land in Abu Dhabi as it was the cheaper option. Conveniently, affordable transportation options are available between Abu Dhabi and Dubai, with the journey taking approximately 1.5 to 2 hours each way. More details on the cost are in the Transportation Section .

If you’re traveling from the U.S., you can find heavily discounted round-trip airfare on FareDrop . This platform often provides great deals on flights, making your Dubai travel more affordable.

As of our visit, there were no specific entry requirements or fees for US citizens traveling to the UAE. However, these conditions can change frequently due to various factors. You can check with your government’s embassy program or, even easier, with iVisa .

  • Double check your entry requirements for the UAE!

Accommodations

Total: $353

Average: $88 per night

During our stay in Dubai, we spent a total of $353 on accommodations, averaging $88 per night. Although this is fairly high for our nightly budget, this was an awesome find in the UAE. This was primarily influenced by the time of year (read: no one visits in summer for a reason) and our Diamond Hilton Honors status .

We had the privilege of staying at the  Waldorf Astoria Dubai Palm Jumeirah  for two nights, a truly luxurious experience. For the other two nights, we lodged at the  Hilton Dubai Al Habtoor City , which also offered excellent services and amenities.

Over four days, our food and drink expenses mostly consisted of local street food and fast-casual meals, with shawarma being a staple in our diet. We made a conscious effort to explore local eateries, relishing the authentic flavors of Dubai. Furthermore, being Hilton Diamond members, we enjoyed complimentary breakfast at our hotels, which considerably reduced our food costs. Thus, our strategic dining choices enabled us to enjoy the local cuisine without significantly inflating our budget.

We frequently relied on Uber for transportation during our stay—it was quite popular and extremely convenient. The cost of each Uber ride varied depending on the distance and traffic, but on average, it ranged from $10 to $20 per trip.

  • How we get $200 in UBER CASH for Free every year!

Since we flew into Abu Dhabi Airport (AUH) and stayed in Dubai, we used a bus service to get back and forth. It was reasonably priced at $10 per person per way. After our arrival at DXB airport, we chose to use Uber to reach our destination at the  Waldorf Astoria Dubai Palm . This particular trip was a bit pricier, costing us $46, but considering the comfort and convenience of traveling late at night, it was the best option for us.

  • Or you could rent a car!

Our excursion expenses during our 4-day stay in Dubai were quite minimal since we primarily engaged in free activities. This included visiting the Dubai Mall, strolling along the Dubai Marina, and exploring the historic neighborhood of Al Fahidi, all of which offered rich experiences without any cost. However, we did choose to spend a bit on an exciting roller skating experience at Roll DXB, which added a unique and fun element to our trip.

Overall, our excursion costs were kept significantly low thanks to the abundance of cost-free activities in the vibrant city of Dubai. Obviously, there are plenty of options for fun paid activities in Dubai. Some affordable options might be a desert safari , the Global Village , or the Dubai Frame .

Our personal expenses in Dubai were mainly driven by shopping, as the city is a renowned shopping destination with a ton of unique options. This includes the world’s largest mall, the Dubai Mall, which offers an extensive range of retail stores, dining options, and entertainment activities. There are also traditional souks where a variety of local goods and souvenirs can be found. Overall, shopping in Dubai was a unique experience that added to our travel costs but also enriched our visit to this vibrant city.

We also budgeted for data expenses during our stay in Dubai, choosing to use Airalo, an easy-to-use e-SIM provider . This decision added convenience to our trip, as we were able to stay connected without dealing with physical SIM cards. It was definitely more expensive than we are used to while traveling, but that was just the nature of the destination.

Travel Insurance

We always secure travel insurance before embarking on any trip and highly recommend others to do the same. For our 4-day Dubai adventure, we pro-rated our usual monthly payment of $45 per person. Our chosen provider is SafetyWing , which covers our travel and emergency medical expenses. For instance, it covers trip cancellation, lost luggage, as well as unforeseen medical emergencies such as accidents or sudden illness. Having this coverage provides peace of mind allowing us to fully enjoy our travels.

Better safe than sorry...

Are you covered for your next trip? Whether you’re planning a quick weekend getaway or a long-term adventure,  SafetyWing  has you covered. From medical emergencies to lost luggage, they’ll take care of it all. Plus, they even offer emergency response and natural disaster coverage – pretty cool, huh?

Total Dubai Travel Cost

Total with Flights: $1,486

In summary, our four-day trip to Dubai was a significant expenditure, with total costs reaching $991, or an average of $248 per day and $124 per person per day. This included accommodations, food and drink, transportation, excursions, personal expenses, data expenses, and travel insurance.

It’s important to note that our journey was during a less popular time of year, and costs could be even higher during peak season. Despite the high costs, the experience offered by Dubai was well worth it, providing a unique blend of modern luxury and traditional culture.

Setting a budget before embarking on your Dubai adventure is more than just a wise move – it’s essential. A budget acts as a navigational tool guiding you through the myriad of opulent temptations while keeping your finances in check. Here’s how budgeting benefits your Dubai travel plans:

  • Prevents Overspending: By establishing spending limits, you’re less likely to succumb to impulsive purchases and extravagant experiences that can quickly deplete your resources.
  • Enables Comprehensive Planning: A budget helps you prioritize which experiences are must-dos, ensuring you get the most value out of your trip.
  • Facilitates Stress-Free Travel: Knowing you have the funds for your planned activities makes for a more relaxed and enjoyable experience.

Whether you’re seeking a opulent suite or a more modest accommodation, dining in lavish restaurants or enjoying street food, budgeting allows you to allocate your resources efficiently. Be ready to embrace everything Dubai has to offer, from its sumptuous feasts to its adrenaline-pumping adventures, all within a budget that suits you.

Pre-trip Expenses: Planning Your Dubai Journey

Embarking on an adventure to Dubai, the city of superlatives, requires meticulous planning, especially when it comes to managing your finances. Your journey to this desert metropolis begins long before you set foot on the plane, which means considering pre-trip expenses that will set the stage for an unforgettable experience. From securing your travel documents to snagging the most cost-effective flights, understanding these expenses in advance will ensure a seamless and stress-free trip.

Prioritizing your travel documentation is the first step toward a worry-free Dubai vacation. Entry into the UAE necessitates a visa, with costs varying based on type and duration. Several types of visas exist, such as tourist, transit, or long-term, and fees can range from approximately $90 to $500 .

  • Tourist Visa : For short stays, suitable for vacationers
  • Transit Visa : Ideal for brief stopovers in Dubai
  • Long-Term Visa : For extended visits or business purposes

Equally important is securing travel insurance to protect against unforeseen circumstances. Typical policies cover medical emergencies, trip cancellations, and lost luggage. Prices will vary based on coverage levels, and it’s essential to ensure that the policy includes COVID-19 related incidents for added peace of mind.

Booking your flight is a substantial portion of any travel budget. To find the best airfare deals to Dubai, savvy travelers should start their search early and remain flexible with travel dates. Airfare fluctuates frequently, so use price comparison websites and set up alerts for price drops.

Budget airlines can offer significant savings, especially if you’re traveling light. Consider flights with stopovers, which can be cheaper than direct routes. Keep an eye out for promotions and sales offered by major carriers. Flying during the shoulder season can also lead to lower prices, avoiding the peak tourist periods.

With a diverse range of cuisines and dining options, foodies looking to savour Dubai’s flavors on a budget can certainly find delicious and affordable meals. In this section, we’re diving into how you can enjoy dining in Dubai on a budget , from understanding the average cost of meals to discovering cheap eats and incredible food deals around the city.

Average Cost Of Meals

The cost of dining out in Dubai can vary widely based on the choice of restaurant and cuisine. While a meal at a high-end restaurant could set you back several hundred dirhams, there are plenty of options that are kind on the wallet. On average, a budget-friendly meal at an inexpensive restaurant would cost approximately 25 to 50 AED per person. Mid-range restaurants typically charge between 50 to 150 AED per person. By selecting local eateries or food courts, you can enjoy a hearty meal for a fraction of the price you would pay at a more upscale venue.

Cheap Eats And Food Deals

Finding great food in Dubai without a hefty price tag is easier than you think. Street food stands, local cafes, and food trucks offer a plethora of cheap eats that don’t skimp on taste. For example, savory shawarmas, falafel wraps, and Indian snacks can be found for under 10 AED, making them perfect for a quick and low-cost meal.

  • Shawarma: 5 – 10 AED
  • Falafel Wrap: 8 – 12 AED
  • Samosas: 2 – 4 AED each

Moreover, keep an eye out for food deals at various eateries, particularly during lunch hours or specific days of the week when restaurants offer special prices. Many eateries in Dubai also feature ‘happy hours’ or set menu deals that can provide significant savings. Additionally, apps and discount vouchers can be a goldmine for securing reduced prices at more upscale eateries.

  • Look for lunch specials at restaurants and cafes.
  • Visit eateries during happy hours for discounts.
  • Use food apps and vouchers for special pricing.

Transportation Expenses Within Dubai

Dubai, a glittering oasis in the United Arab Emirates, isn’t just known for its opulent architecture and vibrant nightlife; it also presents a variety of transportation options catering to tourists and residents alike. Whether you’re budget-conscious or looking for the quickest way to navigate the city, understanding the transportation costs will help you manage your travel finances and ensure a smooth journey around this bustling metropolis.

Public Transportation Vs. Taxi Services

Finding the right balance between convenience and cost is crucial when choosing how to travel within Dubai. Dubai’s public transportation system, including the Metro, buses, and trams, is both affordable and efficient .

  • Metro : A ride on the Dubai Metro can cost anywhere from 3 AED to 14 AED, depending on distance and whether you choose the regular or gold class.
  • Buses : With fares starting at just 2 AED, buses are an economical choice for short distances.
  • Trams : Trams operate in areas like Dubai Marina and have similar pricing to Metro services.

Contrarily, taxi services offer more personalized and direct transportation . A taxi ride costs a starting fare of 6 AED during the day and 7 AED at night, with the meter increasing at 1.82 AED per kilometer. For those opting for comfort and speed over cost, a taxi might be the preferred choice.

The Cost Of Renting A Car

If you value flexibility and independence , renting a car may be the ideal solution for exploring Dubai. The average cost for a small rental car starts from about 100 AED per day excluding insurance and fuel expenses. However, rental prices can vary significantly based on the model and rental company.

Remember to account for additional costs such as parking fees , which in a premium destination like Dubai, can add up quickly, as well as potential fines for traffic violations.

Understanding Communication Costs: Staying Connected

Welcome to a key aspect of your Dubai travel experience – staying digitally connected. As a vibrant hub teeming with culture, business, and tourism, Dubai understands the importance of communication. For those planning to visit, managing communication costs effectively means more budget for exploring this glittering city. Understanding the communication ecosystem, including local SIM cards, data plans, and Wi-Fi availability, is crucial for a hassle-free Dubai adventure.

Local Sim Cards And Data Plans

When arriving in Dubai, acquiring a local SIM card is a smart choice to avoid exorbitant roaming charges. Dubai offers various competitive mobile operators , such as Du and Etisalat, that provide tourists with cost-effective options. These SIM cards come with different data plans tailored to your length of stay and usage requirements .

Visitors should note that passport identification is required when purchasing SIM cards. Additionally, many kiosks and outlets selling SIMs provide instant activation to get you connected immediately.

Free Wi-fi Spots

Dubai is also generous with its free Wi-Fi hotspots . Popular locations such as The Dubai Mall, Dubai International Airport, and along the beaches of JBR offer complimentary internet access. Here’s a quick list of spots where you can expect free Wi-Fi:

  • Shopping Malls: Most malls provide free connectivity to shoppers.
  • Public Parks: Recharge both personally and digitally in Dubai’s green spaces.
  • Public Transport: Stay connected even on the move on Dubai Metro and Buses.

Always ensure that the connection is secure before accessing personal information or performing sensitive transactions. While free Wi-Fi is convenient, visitors should remain vigilant about guarding their digital privacy.

Tipping Culture In Dubai: Gratuities And Service Charges

Exploring Dubai’s glittering skyline, luxurious experiences, and world-class services often leads to a common question among travelers: what’s the tipping etiquette in this bustling cosmopolitan? Whilst not mandatory, tipping in Dubai is a customary practice to show appreciation for good service. Service charges in Dubai are usually included in the bill at upscale restaurants and hotels, yet there remains a grey area on whether these gratuities reach the service staff. Understanding when and how much to tip can help smooth your journey through this dynamic city.

When And How Much To Tip

Dubai does not have a hard and fast rule when it comes to tipping, which can leave many travelers uncertain. The general tipping practice in Dubai is quite flexible and often based upon the quality of service received. Typically, a small gratuity , say 10-15% of your bill, is appreciated in restaurants if a service charge isn’t included. For taxi drivers or valet parking attendants, rounding up your fare or bill to the nearest whole number, or offering an extra 5-10 AED is customary.

Tipping Etiquette For Different Services

In Dubai, the tipping etiquette can be different for various services, and it’s beneficial to know whom to tip and an approximate amount. In hotels, while a service charge could be part of your bills, leaving a daily tip for housekeeping (10-20 AED) showcases direct appreciation.

  • Restaurants: Leave 10-15% if no service charge; nothing required if it’s included unless the service was exceptional.
  • Taxi Drivers: Simply rounding up the fare is appreciated; for a longer trip, consider a 10 AED tip.
  • Bellboys: A tip between 5-10 AED per bag is good practice.
  • Spa and Salon Workers: Tipping 10-15% of the service cost reflects satisfaction with the service.

At the end of the day, tipping remains a personal choice, reflecting gratitude for a service well-rendered . With cash being king for tips, ensure you have small denominations handy to avoid any awkward situations.

cost of travel to dubai

Dubai has evolved over the years to become one of the world's most popular and prestigious tourist sites, enticing visitors from different parts of the world. Visitors can spend hours admiring modern and Arabic architecture, swimming with the dolphins, discovering the history and culture of the Emirates, or enjoying the beautiful view of the waterpark.

However, while planning your Dubai vacation, it is essential that you know what the trip will cost you and how to navigate these costs.

The average cost of a 7-day trip to Dubai is around $1,472 for a solo traveler. Couples can expect to spend up to $2,842 for a 7-day Dubai trip. This leaves us at an average cost of $210 per day. This amount includes food, accommodation, local transportation, sightseeing, and other related travel expenses.

There's no denying that Dubai is relatively expensive to visit, but there are so many things to see and do that you'll not want to pass on any opportunity to visit. The remaining parts of this article cover everything you should know about the costs of visiting Dubai.

Average Cost Of A Trip To Dubai

cost of travel to dubai

We often hear people refer to Dubai as the playground for the rich. But that's not exactly true, as just anybody can visit Dubai from any county. You just need proper budget planning to pull a Dubai vacation through.

One of the first pieces of information you should know while preparing your budget is the average cost of a Dubai vacation. This information will help you plan your spending for your trip.

That said, the average total cost of a Dubai vacation stands at about $2,426. A more detailed cost quote includes flight tickets and other travel expenses. Couples can expect to spend an average of $4,172, while a family of four will spend around $7,421 on their Dubai vacation.

Again, remember that these costs will depend on where you're traveling from, your lifestyle, and several other factors. Don't worry; there are proven strategies to bring the overall costs down.

For example, renting a car in Deira, Dubai , which tends to be a somewhat expensive area, can be mitigated by booking early and planning ahead. Trust me, you'll want to rent a car when you go there. It'll allow you to see that many more places.

When Is The Cheapest Time Of The Year To Visit Dubai?

cost of travel to dubai

One of the biggest hacks to bringing the cost of your Dubai trip down is knowing when to travel. Like every other vacation location, Dubai has its peak travel seasons and other seasons when it doesn't get as many visitors.

In the United States and parts of Europe, vacations are usually more expensive around summer and school holidays. However, the timeline is different in Dubai because of the steaming hot weather that comes with summer.

Traveling between May and November may earn you discounts on hotels and flights. Many sightseeing locations will also either allow free entrance or charge a token to allow visitors to access tourism sites.

However, note that the temperature will soar above 32°F during this period and can even reach 45°F around August.

So, you'll need to be clever when choosing your travel date. Many travelers will book their travel in May or November to allow them to enjoy fair weather and good deals.

Travel Costs & Trip Breakdown

Now that you know the average cost of visiting Dubai, you're probably wondering how we arrived at this cost. Don't worry; here's an item-by-item review of everything contributing to this cost. Remember that a detailed understanding of these items will help you prepare a better budget and allocate funds where needed.

1. Flight Costs

Despite having one of the busiest airports in the world, Dubai is surprisingly still somewhat expensive to fly to. The cost of flight travels to Dubai will always vary, depending on the airline and flying locations.

After careful studies, we've found that a trip to Dubai from most North American airports will cost around $900. On the other hand, Europe is closer to Dubai than America, so a trip from most European countries, Asia, or Africa will be around $600 to $700. Flights from within the Middle East will be far cheaper than these.

It's also important to add that Dubai is the hub for Emirates Airlines. So most Emirates flights will stopover in Dubai before moving on to your destination. In other words, your London-bound Emirates flight may stop over in Dubai for a few days.

You could use the few days to tour Dubai before moving on to your destination. While this does not necessarily reduce Dubai trip costs, most travelers find it a fascinating way to maximize their vacation plans.

2. Accommodations

cost of travel to dubai

Besides transportation, accommodations take the most significant chunk of travel expenses, irrespective of where you're traveling from. Your trip to Dubai won't be different. Like every other top city around the world, Dubai hotel costs vary.

There are plenty of luxurious hotels in the city, including the self-proclaimed 7-star Burj Al Arab Jumeirah hotel, which costs between $628 and $8,200 per night. Don't get scared if you want to travel on a budget; there are many cheaper options throughout the city.

Traditionally, people tend to focus on location when picking hotels to stay in, but that shouldn't be a criterion when choosing a hotel in Dubai. Why? Because Dubai is pretty spread out, without the over-concentration of tourist sites or amenities in any location. However, different areas still feature different hotel costs.

Some areas with more concentration of reasonably priced hotels include Dubai Internet City, Business Bay, and Al Barsha. Older neighborhoods like Deira feature relatively cheaper hotels and are still accessible from anywhere in Dubai.

It's also important to note that you won't find traditional hostels in Dubai as in most parts of the world. Most available hostels are big apartments converted by their owners to make quick cash.

3. Intra-City Transportation

The public bus network is one of the cheapest transport options for public transportation in Dubai. It's a convenient mode of transport and covers nearly all the urban areas of Dubai. Costs begin from $0.54 per trip, depending on where you're going and the time.

Another popular option for tourists looking to move around is taxis. This option is available in nearly every part of the city and can access any area. Taxis in Dubai are typically quick and comfortable, although that comes at additional costs. Costs include:

  • Base fee (incl. 3.80 km) -  $3.27
  • Kilometer price - $0.50.
  • Chauffeur Services

An exquisite option for those who value comfort and personalized service,  chauffeur services in Dubai  offer a premium travel experience. What's a Dubai vacation without touring the city's beautiful landscapes and fascinating tour locations? Once you touch down in Dubai, you'd want to take tours, visit tourist attractions and enjoy wonderful experiences.

There are so many things to see and do in Dubai that you'll hardly go a day without documenting a new experience in your travel journal. Thankfully, Dubai has so many free tourism sites that you can access at different times of the day. The city, on its own, is beautiful, so you can simply walk around while enjoying the beautiful sights it offers.

Notwithstanding, there are also many locations that cost money. For example, climbing the top of Burj khalifa costs around $44, while a desert safari ride on a camel costs around $87. Whatever the case, inquire about the cost of touring your chosen location before booking. On average, you can expect to spend around $832 on tours and attractions during a 7-days stay in Dubai.

How To Save Money During Your Dubai Trip

Dubai is one of the hottest destinations on the planet right now. Everyone's going there, and you probably want to go too. But there's one important thing to take note of - it's a very expensive travel destination . We know how much toll a Dubai vacation can take on your finances, and we've invented tips you can use to save costs.

1. Stay in A Budget Hotel

cost of travel to dubai

We can't overemphasize this one. Dubai is known for having so many 7-star hotels and luxurious resorts. But you don't have to stay in these hotels if you can't afford them. So many simpler options still offer the basic amenities you'll need in a hotel.

An important trick when looking for such hotels is to search by neighborhood. Don't just jump on the first option you see. Be patient during your search and compare prices and amenities.

2. Skip The Booze

cost of travel to dubai

We know how hard it is to go on a vacation and not party very hard, but avoiding alcohol is a fantastic way to save money in Dubai. Alcohol is quite expensive in this city, and a night of light drinking can cost you between $54.45 to $81.64. By avoiding alcohol, you'll be able to save a lot of money that you can easily spend on other essential things.

3. Take The Metro

cost of travel to dubai

As we've pointed out earlier, the metro is one of the cheapest means of transportation in Dubai. Yes, taxis and ride-hailing services are usually the most comfortable and convenient, but they're also costly.

On the other hand, the metro allows you to get around the city on a budget. Add that to the fact that it offers you a fantastic view of the city and you can tell it's a win-win for you.

4. Visit Spots With Free Entry

cost of travel to dubai

Dubai may be an expensive city to visit, but it still has so many sites that allow free entry. A fantastic hack for saving money on your Dubai travel is to minimize the amount you'll spend on your regular outings.

Tons of beaches, historic sites, and clubs are available for free. So, depending on your preferred lifestyle, you can search for some of these locations and have maximum fun in them without paying to enter.

5. Use Groupon To Find Good Deals When Possible

cost of travel to dubai

Groupon is pretty popular in Dubai. It's an exciting option to jump on if you want to save money on your Dubai trip. If you're patient and look well, you can find lots of unmatched deals here to take your Dubai travel experience to a new level. Cruises, dinners, even  trip to the zoo - You'll find a deal on Groupon!

6. Cook Your Meals

cost of travel to dubai

One of the best ways to save money when traveling in a group is to cook your meals. Whether you're traveling to Dubai with your family or with a group of friends, cooking your meal can be a lifesaver, especially if you're renting a hostel or a shared apartment.

Take a walk to one of the many farmer's markets in Dubai, where you can buy everything you'll need for your cooking. You'll find almost everything you'll need for cooking in these markets. It might seem like you're saving only a few dollars, but these dollars may be what helps you do other things on your bucket list.

Travel Stories

How much does it cost to travel to dubai (with calculator).

People often ask “how much does it cost to travel to Dubai?” and they’d be surprised to know the amount. The interesting and my favorite part about Dubai is you can travel frugally, moderately and luxuriously. Dubai is one of the most expat cities in the world, it’s ease in immigration and no taxes (in most scenarios) has made it favorable.

Budget Travel Cost to Dubai

By my estimates average cost per day (if solo) would come to about 30-35$ (or 28-32€). Breakdown: 1. Accommodation – 60 AED / 16.5$ / 15€ at capsule hotel in Dubai. Capsule Hotel isn’t like the ones you’d see in Japan but rather a hostel and one of the few around the city. 2. Transportation – Since you chose budget, I’d assume you’d go around with public transportation. For public transportation in Dubai you’d get a Nol card with a daily pass for 20 AED / 5.45$ / 5€ 3. Breakfast – You’ll find cheap breakfast options in Dubai, best are Manakeesh spots, or South Indian breakfast spots or simply from the supermarket. A Manakeesh or Manakish would cost you around 7 AED / 1.9$ / 1.75€. 4. Lunch & Dinner – In Dubai you’ll find cheap spots for lunch and dinner all around the city. In areas bur dubai, deira, karama and so on. My favorite unhealthy eat spots are cafeterias like Jabal Al Noor, seashell cafe, golden falcon cafeteria. To be honest, they all have the same menu, usually with the same supplier they tend to have the same products and similar flavors and similar pricings.

Money We Have

Accommodations

Like any other city, Dubai hotel costs can vary quite a bit. They have plenty of luxurious hotel properties, including the self-proclaimed 7-star Burj Al Arab Jumeirah hotel and several affordable options. For the purpose of this cost of trip to Dubai article, I’m using an average of $225 a night, but there are cheaper options.

Traditionally, when picking a hotel, many people focus on location, but I don’t think that’s as important in Dubai. The reason I say this is that the city is pretty spread out so there’s no one central location where you want to be. That said, Downtown Dubai and the Marina/Jumeirah are easily the most popular spots. Check out my detailed guide on the  best hotels in Downtown Dubai .

Some areas to consider with reasonably priced hotels include Business Bay, Dubai Internet City, and Al Barsha. Cheaper accommodations can be found in older areas such as Deira. Honestly, it takes about 20mins by car to get just about anywhere in Dubai, so look for price and comfort.

One thing to note, Dubai doesn’t really have any traditional hostels that you’ll find in many parts of the world. The hostels in Dubai are often just big apartments that have been turned into hostels. This may or may not be a good thing for travellers.

If you’re looking for some hotel recommendations, consider the following:

  • Ramee Rose Hotel
  • Centro Barsha
  • Four Points by Downtown Dubai
  • Pullman Hotel
  • Grand Plaza Mövenpick
  • Rove Downtown
  • Four Seasons Jumeirah Beach
  • Address Downtown

Local transportation

Dubai’s main mode of public transportation is the metro which has two lines. The red line runs above ground, mostly parallel to Sheikh Zayed Road and goes all the way to the airport. The green line is underground and goes through Al Karama, Al Raffa, Al Rigga and Al Qusais.

The Dubai Metro does not accept cash fares, you must buy a Nol card which is reloadable. Tourists will want to buy the red card. The amount you pay is based on how many zones you travel. One zone is 4 dirhams, two zones are 6 dirhams, and 3+ zones will set you back 8.50 dirhams. Every station has someone working in a booth selling tickets. Alternatively, you can buy a ticket from a machine.

The Marina area is serviced by a tram that’s not directly connected to the metro. Rides cost 4 dirhams. There’s also the monorail that services the Palm Jumeirah Dubai, which will cost you 20 dirhams for a one-way ticket or 30 dirhams for a return ticket. Dubai also has many public buses.

Despite the many public transportation options, it’ll likely be easier for tourists to use a taxi, Uber or Careem (the local Uber). Generally speaking, Dubai taxi fares are roughly 75 cents a minute. Remember, it usually won’t take you more than 20-25 mins to get anywhere in Dubai. Yes, it would be cheaper to take public transportation, but despite the network, it takes quite a bit of time, and you’ll need to do a lot of walking. For example, it could easily take you an hour to get from your hotel in Downtown Dubai to the beach or Marina. Taxis are cheaper than Uber/Careem, so always try that option first.

For the purpose of this how much does it cost to go to Dubai trip estimate, I’m estimating $40 a day with the assumption you’re just taking taxis most of the time.

Attractions

Although  Dubai has some free tourist attractions , such as the beach and the Dubai fountain show, you’ll likely be spending a good amount of money on attractions.

The most obvious thing to do is to go up the  Burj Khalifa , the world’s tallest building and the most iconic landmark in Dubai. For $40USD you get access to levels 124 and 125. At the Top, Burj Khalifa SKY ticket costs $103 and gets you access to floor 148. If you want access to the World’s highest lounge and levels 152,153, and 154, it’ll cost you $168. Just go with the cheapest option but note that you should purchase your ticket in advance since it’s a timed entry.

Many people will also decide to take a  desert safari tour  and a full-day guided trip to Abu Dhabi, which is the capital of the United Arab Emirates. Both of these tours will cost you about $40 – 70 each. I personally think the trip to Abu Dhabi is worth it if you have time, but note that these tours won’t be able to fit every attraction in. Make sure your tour does visit the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque, it’s one of the most beautiful mosques in the world and the largest mosque in the UAE. The desert tour can be quite fun if you’ve never been to a desert. The landscapes are beautiful, and if you are adventurous you can’t try sand boarding on the sand dunes.

Other attractions to consider include  the Dubai Frame , a  marina boat tour , a day at a resort/spa, skydiving, the Dubai Aquarium, the Dubai Museum, Wild Wadi Water Park, a dinner cruise, and more. Mind you, not every attraction is paid. There are many free beaches, and quite a lot of people just enjoy walking around looking at the architecture of Dubai. The Al Fahidi Historical District has many free or inexpensive galleries and museums. Right next door is the textile souk. From there, you can take the abra boat across the Dubai Creek for about 30 cents. You’ll now be in Al Ras, where you can see the gold souk and spice souk.

Depending on the type of travel you like to do, the hotels in Dubai can also be an attraction in themselves. If you are looking to splurge properties like the Atlantis Dubai have beaches, clubs, bars, a huge outdoor pool, and full-service spa on hand.

Food and drink

Dubai has every international cuisine possible. As in, almost every major chain from around the world has a location somewhere in Dubai. In one day, I saw L’Antica Pizzeria da Michele from Italy, Tim Horton’s from Canada, Shake Shack from the United States, Paul from France and Din Tai Fung from Taiwan.

You can literally get every type of cuisine you want but generally speaking, I found food prices to be about 30% more expensive compared to what those same chains would cost you back in their home countries. What I’m getting at is that you should budget a fair amount of food.

With that in mind, an average budget for daily meals will look something like this.

  • Breakfast: $10
  • Dinner: $35

That works out to $60 a day which isn’t cheap. Mind you, you can easily spend less if you eat light or get fast food. You could also spend much more if you’re into fine dining and alcohol. I just wanted to give you a reference point for your planning. One thing I should mention is that  tipping in Dubai  is not common. Most people will just leave the coins or 10 dirhams regardless of how much the meal costs.

Random spending

Dubai is known for its malls. It’s insane how many malls the city has. You literally can’t visit the city without going to a mall. As a result, it’s pretty easy to spend. In my Dubai trip cost guide, I’ve estimated $200 for random spending but you could easily spend more or less than that amount. For reference, the best mall is the Dubai Mall. The Mall of the Emirates is also cool since it’s home to ski Dubai.

For reference, when I went, I didn’t buy any real souvenirs or clothes, but I did buy a bunch of coffee and packaged goods that I couldn’t get at home. What you spend is up to you but note that shopping in Dubai is not cheap.

Cost to go to Dubai

So how much does it cost to go to Dubai? I estimate you’ll spend about US$3,325 for five nights and six days. This isn’t terribly expensive, but it’s also not cheap. For many people, Dubai is a bucket list destination, so it’s well worth the cost.

The nice thing about Dubai is that it’s a major hub for flights and cruises so it’s easy to get to the region. For more inspiration, check out my guides to  Jordan ,  Egypt ,  Israel ,  Japan ,  Hong Kong ,  Tokyo  and  Europe .

Frequently asked questions

Can you visit dubai on a budget.

Dubai on a budget  is possible. It just depends on what you’re willing to sacrifice. There are plenty of budget hotels in Deira and Sharjah. You could also use public transportation instead of taking taxis everywhere. It’s not hard to find cheap food, just don’t expect anything fancy. It’s hard to save on attractions since the top sites typically have an admission fee. Your Dubai travel costs can be reasonable if you put some effort into it.

How can I reduce my expenses in Dubai?

Dubai is not a cheap destination. Admission fees can add up pretty quickly to the attractions and while there are more affordable places to eat and hotels, it’s by no means ‘cheap’. You can also cut down on your time here. You don’t need six to seven nights to see the highlights. If you are worried about money then it might be better to spend three to four nights.

What is the cheapest time to go to Dubai?

The busy season in Dubai is from November to January when the heat is manageable. Since Dubai is in a desert, the heat can be quite intense from June to August, so that’s the cheapest time to go. Don’t expect December to be cheaper, as that’s still a relatively busy time for Dubai.

What should I avoid in Dubai?

Dubai is a very religious and conservative city, so you need to be aware of its laws. Don’t display any public displays of affection or make any jokes about the rulers. Don’t even think about committing any crimes, as the punishments are quite severe. Medicine can often be considered controlled substances, so ensure you have doctor’s notes with you if you’re bringing any into the city.

It’s also important to keep in mind that since Dubai is so religious and conservative, you should dress respectfully. Leave the swimsuits for the beaches and beach clubs (Dubai has many since it is located on the shores of the Persian Gulf).

How many days in Dubai?

This cost to go to Dubai guide recommends five nights and six days, but not everyone will have that much time. Generally speaking, you’ll want at least four days in the city which will still be enough time to go on a day trip. If you check out my  Dubai itinerary for 5 days , it gives you a good idea of what your schedule could look like. That said, since Dubai International Airport is such a huge travel hub, many people come just for a day or two as a stopover. It’s definitely worth it and you could easily adjust the suggested itinerary to fit your timeframe.

What is the best way to get around Dubai?

The quickest way to get around Dubai is with a taxi or rideshare. Of course, that’s also the most expensive option. If you want to keep your costs down, the metro can get you relatively close to many of the major attractions. If you’re headed to the Dubai Marina area, you may also have to take the tram. The bus network is quite extensive and gets you everywhere, but you need to know which ones to take. Your Dubai trip cost will be lower if you stick to public transportation.

What are the best day trips in Dubai?

The best day trips in Dubai are purely subjective. If you want to explore more of the United Arab Emirates, then a visit to Abu Dhabi is the obvious thing to do. You can book a guided Abu Dhabi city tour as discussed above, or, you can also visit on your own. This is ideal if you want to visit spots like Ferrari World which isn’t included on most guided itineraries.

If you prefer something with more adventure, then try a desert safari or the Musandam Peninsula. There’s also Sharjah which is a short drive from Dubai. Many people think of Sharjah as a suburb of Dubai, but it’s actually another city. It has a few museums and a butterfly house which may be of interest.

What is the best time to visit Dubai?

October to February are typically considered to be the best months to visit Dubai and the UAE in general. This part of the world can get incredibly hot during the summer months so you want to visit when it’s cooler and you can explore the main highlights and walk around outside without struggling in the heat.

Is Dubai safe?

Yes, laws here are   incredibly strict meaning there is very little crime and plenty of travellers agree that Dubai is one of the safest   places in the world. You don’t   need to worry about hiring guides or booking a Dubai vacation package, it’s totally safe to do on your own.

Well written and informative.Dubai looks like a fantastic place, just avoid public displays of affection!

I’d love to go to Dubai. However, I’m handicapped and use a small, electric scooter to get around and I’m on oxygen. Is it still possible for me to enjoy a trip to this city? Thanks.

I obviously wasn’t paying that much attention when I was there, but it appeared that most attractions in Dubai are accessible. Your biggest concern would be transportation within the city.

' src=

I want to go to dubai and work there. I need a sincere agent. Help!

' src=

Nicely written article. Do I need to be concerned about conmen charges, eg – taxis don’t have meters and then overcharge foreigners, or restaurants padding bills with unmentioned charges. What about Airbnb’s – are they reliable? What about pickpockets. Thanks!

Crime is very low in the UAE since the punishments are harsh. All taxis use meters, but of course, you can also use Uber since they can’t tamper with that. I personally never had a bad experience at any restaurants. Airbnb vs. hotel is a personal preference. That said, there are so many hotels available that you shouldn’t have any issues finding one in your budget.

The drinks should come before food. Unable to have any fluid unless after food. Thanks

Gulfair were on top form and everything went as planned

The entertainment on board was really poor. The map doesn’t give enough information and the movies have arabic subtitles, you can’t choose. The stuff wasn’t very friendly and the breakfast really poor. The food must not be spicy! They didn’t have enough drinks.

Aereo nuovissimo e con tanti servizi malgrado la durata del volo Spazio per le gambe ridottk

It was a great experience, can’t wait to do it again soon!!

Aircraft was new and comfertable .on time. Cabin crews, which I got english language pronounce was very difficult to understand .ovee all ok flight

The boarding at Heathrow is chaotic. That's partly due to the lack of space and seating at gate 8, and a Qatar flight from gate 9 at the same time. That's down to Heathrow rather than Gulf Air. I've had a similar experience here before. Another problem which isn't specific to Gulf Air or Heathrow is announcements, and those for boarding in particular. They are difficult to hear with all the other noise and for me with hearing problems it's even worse. A simple tv screen would help, so long as it's updated of course.

This itineray had to be cancelled as the connection time in Paris was only 55 min which is below the 90 min required by Paris airport. Nether Chat deal/Kayak, nor Gulf air nor American Air picked on that. I called American Air for unrelated question was then told that boarding would be denied due to the short connection time. This should have been an automatic notification from Chat deal/ Kayak or Gulf air and itinery cancelled. What is the point of inconveniencing the passenger?? The return has still not be refunded. Shame on Gulf Air, very poor customer service for an airline that has so good flight crew!

Few people on the plane - Was great! The plane was late to board and over an hour late to arrive. They said it was airport control. How can these things not be booked it advance? Very frustrating!

The flight was a transit and I had my boarding pass from the departure. I have talked to the check in person to set me up close to my family seats and ended up with my wife in one seat, 3 years old son in different seat and myself on different seat. very disappointing and overwhelming.

When is The Cheapest Time to Visit Dubai?

When is the Cheapest Time to Visit Dubai | The Vacation Builder

One of the big questions being asked about any holiday destination let alone Dubai . When is the cheapest time to go to Dubai?

September is the cheapest month to go to Dubai with a verage flight costs at £320 from the UK and average hotel prices at £156 per night.

Average September flight prices to Dubai are just £2 more than the cheapest month of November. However, when taking all costs into account, September wins.

If you’re unable to travel in September and want to know what other months are cheap to visit Dubai, rest easy because we have researched and presented you with a full breakdown of the average travel costs, month on month to show you the cheapest month(s) to travel to Dubai.

Below we have also written short explanations as to how you can travel cheap in that particular month and the reasons why it is cheap.

If your eyes are too tired to read about the best time to visit Dubai then check out this short video instead.

cost of travel to dubai

The Cheapest Time of Year to go to Dubai is..

The cheapest time of year to go to Dubai from the UK is September . However, there’s much more to know, as September has 30 days and it’s not cheap to travel ALL month.

Booking at the right time and travelling at the right time are as important as each other. You can’t expect to book on the 1st September and travel on the 15th and assume it’s going to be cheap.. there’s more science behind this so read on.

When is the Best Time to Book Flights to Dubai?

When is the Best Time to Book Flights to Dubai | The Vacation Builder

The first question we need to ask is when to book flights? We can take a lot of information from one of our previous posts on The Cheapest Time to Book Flights , which has a full month by month breakdown of average flight costs around the globe.

To save you the hassle of reading that article, November was the cheapest time to book flights to the Asian continent as a whole and forms the basis of our research into cheap flights to Dubai.

Remember, November at the moment is the time to BOOK, not travel.

What is the Cheapest Month to Fly to Dubai?

For the purpose of this post we are going to concentrate on direct flights only. Below is a table of the average flight cost to Dubai, from London, per month.

As you can see from the table below November is also the cheapest time to FLY to Dubai by a cats whisker! Average direct flight costs = £318. September is a close second at £320 per flight.

When to Book Hotels in Dubai?

The next aspect we need to consider is hotels. First of all, when to book hotels in Dubai. This one is actually easier than it sounds as Kayak.com have done their own independent study based on millions of bookings.

Whatever time of year you choose to travel, the data tells us that the most expensive day to book a hotel is a Tuesday and the cheapest days to book are Friday and Saturday .

If we go really deep into the stats you will find that the cheapest check in day is a Sunday and the most expensive is a Friday (OF COURSE!). But that doesn’t help much when your travelling for a week or more…

So when is the best time to book a hotel in Dubai? Well you can get room rates really, really cheap if you leave it until very last minute. The problem you will have is availability and choice. So this method is for the risk takers who don’t mind so much if their favourite hotel is off the market and sold out!

When is the Cheapest Time to go to Dubai? | The Vacation Builder

For everyone else, make sure you stay outside of the 40 day mark. Booking hotels between 40 and 21 days prior to check-in is statistically the worst time to book.

Hotels have a good idea of their allocations in this time frame and will hike prices should they feel that the rooms are selling well. It’s a risk.

Booking too far in advance can also see travellers pay high prices, and truth is there isn’t any solid evidence to show when the cheapest month to book is. My only advice would be to start looking early, monitor prices, and try to book at least 40 days prior to check-in.

Tip: If you want to make sure you get the lowest rate, the hotel booking site Tingo (SmarterTravel’s sister company) will automatically monitor your hotel and rebook you at the new lower rate if prices drop.

When is the Cheapest Month to Stay in Dubai Hotels?

When is the Cheapest Month to Stay in Dubai Hotels | The Vacation Builder

This question is a lot easier to answer as we can compare past hotel prices in the city by month.

Peak room rate periods for hotel stays in Dubai are during the last three weeks of January, the second and fourth weeks of February, the last two weeks of March, the second and third weeks of October, and the last week of December.

Month by month average room rates can be seen on the table below. The information below is pulled from Statista and is in US Dollars but still gives us a good insight of the average monthly cost of hotels in Dubai.

The cheapest months to stay in Dubai hotels | The Vacation Builder

As you can see above, August is the cheapest month to stay in a hotel in Dubai . However, August is not a cheap month to fly, and it is extremely hot, with temperatures well into their 40’s every day.

July runs a close second place but not too far out is September. September is still a significantly cheaper time to book stays in Dubai than most other months , especially when combining flights too.

The Conclusion

September is the Cheapest Month to Visit Dubai | The Vacation Builder

When combining flight costs with hotel costs, September comes out on top.

September in Dubai is still fairly hot, too hot for some in fact with an average daily high of 39C! However, September is out of the school holidays for both the UK and Dubai, its not Ramadan or Eid too. This all contributes to September being the cheapest time to visit Dubai as restaurant prices and excursions stay at a reasonable rate.

Tip: Dubai as a city has a tendency to increase prices during holidays or Eid. This includes everything from taxi rides to excursions. Whenever you plan a trip to Dubai always check their holiday periods which can be done easily enough on Google.

Average flight costs to Dubai in September are £320. Just £2 more than the cheapest month of November! Average hotel costs in September are £156 per night. This is £59 per night under the yearly average. Split these figures across a 7 night stay and going in September could save you £413 on the hotel alone!!

Tip: Be careful not to impulse buy your flights to Dubai when you see a cheap deal. In comparison, hotel costs in November (which is statistically the cheapest time to fly) are a whopping £90 per night over the cost of staying in September !

We hope you have enjoyed reading the article and that this has given you some good information on the Cheapest Time to go to Dubai.

Canada spent $1.4M sending delegation to COP28 conference in Dubai: documents

OTTAWA — Participating in a UN climate change conference last year cost Canada nearly $1.4 million, according to newly released documents.

The 28th United Nations climate change conference, also known as COP28, took place in Dubai from Nov. 30 until Dec. 12.

Canada’s delegation consisted of 633 attendees, according to answers contained within an order paper question submitted by Conservative MP Andrew Scheer.

They included federal and provincial politicians, Indigenous and environmental groups, and executives from both government agencies and private corporations.

The numbers contained in the documents are not final, as invoices and claims are still being processed.

The breakdown of the $1,353,307.09 Canada spent to attend COP28 is as follows:

• Transportation: $658,611.50

• Accommodations in 21 Dubai hotels: $449,597.11

• Meals and incidentals: $241,106.02

• Hospitality: $3,992.56

  • Governor General's week-long Middle East trip cost taxpayers $1.3 million
  • Governor General expensed $71,000 in limo fees for four-day Iceland trip in 2022

While the response provided lists of core and pavilion delegation members, the government did not disclose how many people attended the conference on the taxpayer’s dime.

“The federal government covered the costs of federal employees, four Indigenous representatives, six youth delegates, six civil society representatives, six Parliamentarians, one Net-Zero Advisory Board member, five non-public servant Canada pavilion support staff, and 22 Canada pavilion participants belonging to underrepresented groups,” the response said, adding that funding was provided for nine representatives from national Indigenous organizations to attend.

“Delegates other than those outlined above were responsible for their own travel expenses.”

While the response didn’t specify how many federal employees attended the conference, a  statement from Environment Canada puts that number at 114.

Among them were Environment Minister Steven Guilbeault, four MPs, three senators, scores of deputy ministers and executives from a variety of government agencies and departments, including Environment Canada, Transport Canada, Fisheries and Oceans, Global Affairs Canada and the Canadian Space Agency, ministerial staffers, and ambassadors and diplomatic staff.

Also attending the conference was Alberta Premier Danielle Smith, who brought an entourage of 18 staffers, deputy ministers and protection detail.

The order paper response provided few details on the government’s carbon footprint of their COP28 delegation, mentioning that emissions data is maintained through the government’s centralized travel booking service and that such information is not tracked in any government database.

“This data is not disaggregated by individual and does not includes ministerial travel, which is not booked through the centralized system,” the response said, adding that Environment Canada purchases carbon offset credits in bulk rather than specifically for each instance of travel.

A total of 159 hotel rooms were booked across 21 properties, with most staying at the Delta Hotels by Marriott in Dubai’s Investment Park, just across the highway from the COP28 venues at Dubai’s Expo City neighbourhood.

A total of 171 nights were booked across 40 rooms at that hotel, totalling $204,022.03.

Fifty-five rooms were also booked for 15 nights at the nearby Premier Inn, racking up a $195,462.12 bill.

The balance of the hotels largely saw just a handful of booked rooms, with 13 at the Amwaj Rotana Jumeirah Beach Hotel, and 10 at the Pullman Dubai Jumeirah Lakes Towers.

While most rooms ranged from $200 to $400 per night, the most expensive room booked was a single night at the Tryp by Windham Dubai, costing $1,821.90.

An Environment Canada spokesperson confirmed that number was a clerical error, and that the charge was for a seven-night stay at the hotel, not a single night.

Franco Terrazzano, federal director of the Canadian Taxpayers Federation, questioned the environmental stewardship of spending over a million dollars to facilitate 633 people boarding flights to Dubai.

“Nothing screams fighting climate change like flying around the world, burning through jet fuel and taxpayers’ cash,” he told the National Post.

“This fits into a bigger problem with this government where politicians and bureaucrats are constantly jetting off to fancy conferences and sticking struggling taxpayers with the big bill.”

Canada’s COP28 bill came in a little under what Rideau Hall spent to send Governor General Mary Simon and 29 passengers for a week-long visit to Dubai and the Middle East in 2022 aboard a government VIP aircraft.

Nearly $100,000 of that trip’s $1.3 million price tag went toward in-flight catering costs, with passengers enjoying beef wellington, carpaccio and over $500 for a redacted quantity of lemons and limes.
