  • Faygatineau 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Being Tourists at Home This was our first experience with Aventure Outaouais and it was a great one. We are local active seniors and decided to be tourists here at home. We went with friends also from the area. Everything went smoothly from reservations to pick up to being outfitted with the proper snowshoeing equipment and instructions. Our excellent guide, Brandon, who is also the owner, entertained us with some interesting stories and history of the region, during the bus ride and the trek. He also was the perfect host of our diversified group of locals and visitors, young and not so young, first timers and experienced snow-shoers, putting everyone at ease. He planned, transported, heated and served a delicious supper in the cozy wood cabin. We had a magical trek on a very mild January evening. The trails which are mostly in the forest were in great shape and Brandon's tips and patience made the climbs very doable for the group. We enjoyed the activity, the stories, the history, meeting other tourists, and learning about several local resources and small businesses. We look forward to our next tour for ourselves and for a fun way to introduce our out-of-town guests to our region. A stress-free way to participate in a winter activity with transportation, park pass, a guide, sporting equipment and lunch all included. Highly recommend! Read more Written January 30, 2024
  • Chicki197 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles A great day from start to finish! We did the Petite Nation tour today and I so much enjoyed the day. It is my second trip with Brandon (did Pontiac wine tour last year) and it did not disappoint! Brandon is a great guide... informative, fun, personable, passionate and a great communicator. He made sure everyone in the group was having a wonderful time. We visited 3 locations today to try a variety of wines (generous servings ) and we also had the most delicious lunch at Brylee farm. It was a day full of good wine, great hosts, sunshine, all you need snacks and great eats. No better way to start my holidays! Now, which tour to do next? :) Read more Written September 16, 2023

You are provided with travel to and from all visit points, you have free snacks on the tour bus, all the equipment you need and a mini kayaking 101 lesson. The river was peaceful and easy to navigate for any novice kayaker and provided a lot of great photo opportunities. The summit tower was incredible and we enjoyed a great boxed lunch from a local restaurant. But that wasn't it..... the visit to an ice cream shop (with a pig to greet you) and chocolaterie in Wakefield were the cherry on top of a great day! We learned a lot about the area, its history and about all the wonderful local artisan/businesses. Brandon was a great tour guide!! Read more Written August 28, 2023

They cancelled because of weather (which btw never ended up showing up). I’m not mad at the tour guides because I understand they are liable. Just a bit disappointed. The refund was given within 24 hours so I’m happy with that. The people in charge were really nice, it’s a shame that I wasn’t able to join their adventures. Overall the customer service and kindness was amazing but since I never got the chance to do it I’ll have to keep my stars low. Hopefully someone else will have the opportunity to enjoy this. Dogsledding in the Pontiac region of the Outaouais: Go to the dogs!

“My mother had sled dogs, so I get my passion for them and sledding from her,” said Denis Rozon, owner-operator and chief guide at Timberland Tours Dog Sled Adventures in Bristol, Quebec.

“We lived in Maniwaki; we are native and had sled dogs for as long as I can remember. As well, 50 or 60 years ago, there were big dog races in Maniwaki. They’re gone now, but really, this is what captured my interest when I was a boy. It was exciting, you know?”

I’m sure we can all imagine how thrilling dogsledding was for the young Rozon, who had his first team at age six. At Timberland, it is easy to capture an authentic sense of our Canadian past, as Rozon has kept this Northern Peoples’ tradition alive and thriving.

He has maintained and deepened his passion for racing sled dogs, having dedicated his life to breeding them and promoting the sport internationally. Not only does Timberland host an international dryland dog race in the last week of October, but in January, it also hosts snow dogsled racing. Visitors can take sledding tours there in both summer and winter.

Elsewhere in the Pontiac, Caroline Desrosiers and her husband Sylvain Drapeau share Rozon’s love of sled dogs and also run a dogsledding outfitter. Their Escapade Eskimo company offers dog-sled tours near the village of Otter Lake. Intriguingly, they raise different breeds of dogs than Rozon does.

Let’s take a look at these Pontiac-based operators.

Meet Eurodogs at Timberland Tours Dog Sled Adventures in Bristol

After many years of work, which included time in the Canadian Armed Forces, Rozon decided to turn his love of sled racing and dogs into his full-time business. In 2008, he opened Timberland Tours Dog Sled Adventures , roughly an hour’s drive west of Ottawa-Gatineau.

Arriving at Timberland, I was immediately greeted with a cacophony of howls, yips and barks, plus the comical sight of more than 40 doggies leaping about beside their individual kennels. Most begged for my attention, so of course I headed over, dispensing pats and hugs to as many as I could.

With a cheerful shout of hello, Rozon strode to my side, introducing me to first this dog, then that one. Immediately, I could tell these weren’t the usual Siberian Husky sled dogs; in fact, I thought they resembled short-haired Greyhounds and Pointers.

I asked Rozon, “What breed are these?”

“We call them Eurodogs,” he explained. “You’re right: they are 75% German Pointers, 20% Alaskan Huskies and 5% Greyhounds. They’re specially bred for racing, and the new generation of younger racers call them ‘harness dogs,’ not ‘sled dogs.’ I’ve been racing for more than 45 years and I can tell you, I just love this breed. They’re fast and all heart!”

Note to self: bred to run.  Will I be able to control the sled? I mused.

For sure. Rozon has bred many of his Eurodogs himself, here at Timberland. He emphasized that they love to run on the safe, broad, groomed trails they know very well.

“Of course, before anyone heads out, our guides give people training. We put two people on each sled: one stands at the back as musher, the other is on the sled. Half-way through the trail, we switch roles, so everybody gets a chance at mushing.”

Said Rozon, “The dogs race on a 30-foot-wide track, which is clear and very, very safe—and fast. But no one needs to be nervous! We’ve had a 90-year-old out here enjoying the sledding, as well as lots of families with kids. It’s fun for the entire family, for sure. I’ve been racing dogs for 45 years and I never, ever tire of introducing people to my dogs and the sport. It’s a wonderful tradition to continue, right here in the Pontiac.”

And it’s jolly good fun, too.

Come on out and experience a fabulous time. And don’t forget to get about the Bristol Dryland World Cup Dog Race (last weekend in October) and the Pontiac International Sled Dog and Skijoring Race in January.

Cuddle Siberian Husky puppies at Escapade Eskimo in Otter Lake

Caroline Desrosiers and her husband Sylvain Drapeau operate Escapade Eskimo on their 1,200-acre, forested, hilly property in Otter Lake, approximately 1.5 hours by car from Parliament Hill. They love dogs and, like Rozon, they breed dogs and offer dog-sledding experiences. However, there are significant differences between Timberland and Escapade Eskimo, which means both outfitters are well worth visiting.

Let’s first consider the dogs. At Escapade Eskimo, they are purebred Siberian Huskies, not Rozon’s sleek, short-haired Eurodogs. So these animals look like what we fully expect sled dogs to look like: fuzzy, pointed-muzzled dogs resembling wolves.

Drapeau told me he got his passion for dogs and sledding from his uncle, François Bruneau, who has been in the business since 1985. Desrosiers and Drapeau opened their business in 2004 and now have 46 huskies. (Cuteness alert: Ask if there are puppies to see—or perhaps, if you’re lucky, to cuddle. Kids will desperately want to take at least one home.)

When my husband Eric and I arrived at Escapade Eskimo, Drapeau took us out to his truck, where the dogs were already waiting in their trailer-kennel. Off we drove to the snowy trailhead. There, we helped remove the sleds from the truck and straightened the traces to which the dogs would be attached.

Then it was time to help take the dogs out of their kennel and hook their body harness onto the traces. Well! That proved downright hilarious. It was far easier said than done, because the dogs were so, so eager to run.

I found myself almost unable to cope, simply because I was laughing so much. The dog I was “leading” to the traces (um, who was leading who?) was jumping about on his hind legs, he was so excited to be working.

mushing with a dogsled team of seven huskies at escapade eskimo, otter lake, outaouais, quebec. photo by katharine fletcher.

However, I didn’t have the proper technique. Drapeau quickly came over and explained how to better hold the harness, just behind the dog’s head and at a certain level.

Aha! Now my dog could walk on his hind legs (well, frankly, he still hopped a bit) to the harness, where I was able to attach him.

I became relatively efficient as we three worked, harnessing them all. After a short explanation of how to mush, off we went, dashing through the snow-draped, tree-lined trails. So pretty. So fast. So fun.

These trails have hills, so we got quite the workout. Plus, we had to stay engaged and aware: The sled swung from side to side, so we needed to balance it by moving our weight in the opposite direction.

At Escapade Eskimo, guests can choose trips ranging from two-hour sessions to two-day expeditions. The two-day trip involves staying overnight at the couple’s very comfortable lodge, where you can also try ice fishing. In addition, snowshoeing and snow sliding are available.

Make no mistake: This is active, real Canadian, outdoorsy fun. Just go for it!

How and Where to Go Dog Sledding in Canada

Alberta

Before cars, snowmobiles, and even horses, dog sledding was one of the primary ways for getting around Canada during the winter months. It was an especially important mode of transportation for the people of the northern territories, who continue to respect huskie dogs deeply.

Today, dog sledding is mostly a recreational activity rather than necessary transportation, but it’s an amazing and fun way to experience Canada’s stunning landscape and part of its past.

Dog-sledding tours are available in many provinces and territories, and tours run from a couple of hours to a few days.

Many of the dogs are treated very well, but be sure to do your own research when selecting a tour to ensure that you are using one that treats their animals ethically and humanely.

There are a few dog-sledding opportunities in Newfoundland and Labrador, particularly in the Happy Valley-Goose Bay area. The industry is dying down though, so you won’t find as many chances here as you may have in the past.

Dog sledding is available throughout Alberta , particularly near popular tourist destinations such as Calgary, Lake Louise, Banff , and Jasper. The stunning Alberta scenery makes this an unforgettable dog-sledding locale.

Quebec is an excellent dog-sledding destination, and tours are available in most regions in the province. Because there are a lot of options, it’s an easy add-on to nearby popular spots, including Quebec City , Montreal, and Mont Tremblant.

While dog sledding is available throughout Ontario , you’ll find the majority of tour groups scattered in an area between Ottawa and Toronto, known as Explorer’s Edge (which encompasses Muskoka, Algonquin, Parry Sound, and more). People generally assume dog sledding is only available farther north, but this is a wonderful and easily accessible area to enjoy the sport.

There is something extra special about dog sledding in Canada’s Arctic. In the Yukon , you’ll find tours near the capital of Whitehorse as well as smaller towns, including Dawson City, Haines Junction, and Marsh Lake.

Nunavut offers tours for new dog sledders in many of its communities as well as longer expeditions for more experienced sledders. Dog sledding and the huskies are held in “very high regard” throughout the northern territories.

Northwest Territories

Home of the Canadian Championship Dog Derby, dog sledding is an important part of NWT’s culture, as it is for all of the territories. There are lots of great tour groups here located in communities around the area.

Dog Sledding in Ontario: 10 Awesome Places to Experience the Winter Magic

Dog sledding in Ontario is a winter sport that is gathering momentum. Discover the best spots to experience Ontario dog sledding for yourself.

Dog sledding in Ontario

Dog sledding is as timeless a sport as anything in Ontario. And as the snow begins to fall, more and more Ontarians are heading to the outdoors to celebrate winter. Dog sledding in Ontario is one of the best ways to try something new, and maybe get hooked on a new sport. In fact, dog-sledding is becoming one of the hottest winter activities in Ontario .

Prior to the invention of the snowmobile by Quebec industrialist Joseph-Armand Bombardier, dog-sledding was one of the most dependable ways to traverse the Canadian landscapes during the snowy months. Mushers would lead teams of intelligent and hardy canines who had been bred through centuries by Inuit and other Indigenous Peoples in Northern Canada. In fact, the oldest archaeological evidence of dog sleds dates back over 1,000-years.

Back then, the typical dog sled would have been a single dog pulling a small utility sled. However, modern dog sleds involve teams of well-trained dogs that can tear at a breakneck speed seemingly effortlessly.

Interest in Ontario dog-sledding as an outdoor sport exploded in 2020. Along with the Ontario downhill ski resorts , snowshoeing , and staycations , dog-sledding had a heyday in terms of popularity. Popular dog sledding races such as the Iditarod trail have pushed the sport into the spotlight.

Nowadays there are dog sledding kennels throughout Ontario. From local attractions to full and multi-day outings, this sport is becoming more mainstream. Even urban dwellers are making their way out for Ontario dog-sledding adventures.

If you’ve ever been interested in trying out dog-sledding in Ontario for yourself, these outfitters can help you get your mush-on and add a new outdoor adventure to your Ontario winters.

Tips For Your First Ontario Dogsledding Experience

Ontario dog sledding on a frozen lake

There are few winter activities that are as thrilling and memorable as dogsledding in Ontario. The cold wind on your face, the breath of the dogs misting in the air and the thrill of leaning into your turns as you whip through the forest are immeasurable.

I’ve had the privilege of mushing dog teams in Alberta, Northwest Territories, Quebec, and Finland, and each time I’m out on the trail, it’s pure bliss.

But like any winter adventure, it’s good to know what you’re getting into so that you can enjoy it to the maximum potential. So here are a few dog-sledding tips from someone who’s been there.

  • The dogs have personality. While the typical image most people have of sled dogs is of a purebred Siberian Husky, in fact, most sled dogs are a mix of Husky, Alaskan Malamut, Samoyed, Beagle, and sometimes other dogs. These combinations give them an incredible mix of endurance, athleticism, personality, and the ability to stay comfortable in cold weather environments. Each pup has their own unique personality and you’ll quickly learn that no two dogs are the same. Expect some personality conflicts on the trail two, the personality interactions make a big part of the fun of dog sledding in Ontario.
  • Layer up to stay warm. Being out in the cold for a long time isn’t uncomfortable if you’re dressed appropriately. Wear layers so that you can add or remove clothes as you get hot or cold. Make sure to have good mitts for your hands and comfortable wool socks and waterproof boots to keep your hands and toes warm. Your digits don’t see a lot of action when dog-sledding so it’s good to keep them toasty.
  • Don’t be afraid to ask questions. Most dogsled guides LOVE what they do for a living. They’re as passionate about the dogs and the outdoors as they are about anything. Next to being out on the trail, chatting about mushing is the next best thing. Now is the time to ask those nagging questions that you’ve always had.
  • Choose ethical outfitters. There can be a lot of controversy whenever there is a sport that involves animals. I am a passionate outdoors-person and animal rights are a primary driver among any of the activities and business that I am involved with. Be sure to research your outfitter prior to signing up and be alert for any indications that they may not treat their animals kindly. Don’t be afraid to ask questions. A good outfitter is happy to talk about the care and support that they give. Avoiding questions about these topics is a big indicator that an outfitter may have something to hide.

Dallas Seavey wins 6th Iditarod championship, most ever in the world’s most famous sled dog race

dog sled tours ottawa

By Mark Thiessen, The Associated Press

Last Updated Mar 12, 2024 10:24:35 PM.

ANCHORAGE, Alaska (AP) — Dallas Seavey’s path to an Iditarod championship was like none he’s faced before, including killing a moose and overcoming a time penalty that had him in 10th place at one point to win a record-breaking sixth championship in the world’s most famous sled dog race.

Seavey drove his team a half-block off the Bering Sea ice onto the frozen streets of Nome to cross under the famed burled arch finish line, a triumphant moment in a race marred by the death of three sled dogs, including two on Sunday , and serious injury to another.

The deaths prompted one animal rights organization to renew its call for the end of the storied endurance race in which a team of dogs pulls a sled across 1,000 miles (1,609-kilometers) of Alaska wilderness.

“This one was supposed to be hard,” Seavey told the crowd. “It had to be special, it had to be more than just a normal Iditarod, and for me, it was.”

As he neared the finish line, he jumped off his sled and ran with his dogs, pumping his fists. After he reached the finish line, he hugged each dog on the team.

“There wasn’t a core group of super, super athletes, but what these guys had with a lot of heart, and it was a team and they worked together the whole way down the trail,” he said. “When you look back at 1,000 miles of what these dogs just covered, the challenges they faced, you can’t swallow that in one bite, but we can have one good step at a time. And if you can keep doing that, it leads to something.”

Seavey’s winning time was 9 days, 2 hours and 16 minutes.

Seavey, 37, becomes the winningest musher in the 51-year history of the Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race, which takes the teams over two mountain ranges, across the Yukon River and along the frozen edges of the Bering Sea just south of the Arctic Circle. He won just over $55,000 for the victory.

Such a momentous win started out rough for Seavey after his team got tangled up with a moose on the trail just hours after the Iditarod started.

Seavey’s dog Faloo was injured before Seavey shot and killed the moose with a handgun. Race rules require any big game animal killed in defense of life or property to be gutted before the musher moves on.

Seavey told officials he gutted the moose the best he could. However, he was ultimately given a two-hour time penalty because he only spent 10 minutes gutting the moose, officials said.

The time penalty did not cost Seavey the race, and he left the second-to-last checkpoint Tuesday morning with a healthy three-hour lead over his nearest competitor.

Seavey’s name is found throughout the Iditarod record book. In 2005, he became the youngest musher to run in the race, and in 2012, its youngest champion.

Seavey also won Iditarod championships in 2014 , 2015 , 2016 and 2021 . He had previously been tied with now-retired musher Rick Swenson with five titles apiece. Swenson won the Iditarod in 1977, 1979, 1981, 1982 and 1991.

Seavey’s family history is deeply entwined with the Iditarod. His grandfather, Dan Seavey, helped organize and ran the first Iditarod in 1973, and his father, Mitch Seavey, is a three-time champion.

Dallas Seavey almost took a different path in the sports world. He was the first Alaskan to win a USA national wrestling championship when he took the 125-pound Gregco-Roman title in 2003 and trained for a year at the U.S. Olympic Training Center before concussions led him to back to mushing.

Besides the moose encounter and time penalty, the race had other controversial issues this year.

After going five years without a dog dying during the race, two on separate teams collapsed and died Sunday, and another died Tuesday. Efforts to resuscitate all three dogs were unsuccessful.

Mushers Issac Teaford, of Salt Lake City, and Hunter Keefe, of Knik, both voluntarily scratched or they would have risked being removed by the race marshal because dogs in their care died during the race, per Iditarod rules. The third dog, a 3-year-old male named Henry on rookie Calvin Daugherty’s team, collapsed on the trail about 10 miles (16 kilometers) before reaching the checkpoint in the village of Shaktoolik. A necropsy is planned, and Daugherty also scratched.

People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, the loudest critic of the Iditarod, called for officials to end the race.

“The Iditarod is the shame of Alaska,” PETA Executive Vice President Tracy Reiman said in a statement. “How many more dogs need to die before this stops? Dogs’ lives are worth more than this.” The Iditarod did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Before the race even started, officials disqualified Eddie Burke Jr., the race’s rookie of the year last year, as well as 2022 champion Brent Sass as allegations of violence against women embroiled the Iditarod.

Race officials disqualified Burke on Feb. 19. But the state of Alaska then dropped charges alleging he choked his then-girlfriend in 2022, and the Iditarod Trail Committee reinstated him. He ultimately withdrew because he had leased his dogs to other mushers when he was disqualified and couldn’t reassemble his team in time for the race.

The committee also disqualified Sass without explanation, other than pointing to a rule governing personal and professional conduct, and race officials refused to discuss it during a media briefing ahead of the race.

Sass said in a Facebook post he was “beyond disappointed” and that the “anonymous accusations” made against him were “completely false.” No criminal cases against Sass appear in online Alaska court records.

The race started March 2 for 38 mushers with a ceremonial run in Anchorage . The competitive start was held the following day 75 miles (120 kilometers) north of Anchorage. Since then, seven mushers have withdrawn.
