If you have missed out on loan or credit card payments, it may be a good idea to check if a travel ban has been imposed on you. Such bans may be imposed over outstanding liabilities, criminal cases, disputes or violation of immigration laws.

When it comes to credit card dues or loan payments, an individual failing to pay three consecutive instalments or six non-consecutive ones may be considered as an event of default. According to Ashish Mehta, founder and managing partner of Ashish Mehta & Associates, lenders may approach the court and request the imposition of a travel ban if the outstanding amount is more than Dh10,000.

The UAE Government says on its website: “Before planning your travel, it is advisable to check and/or solve any issues that might stop you at the airport immigration counters. If necessary, you may seek the assistance of a lawyer, or contact the nearest immigration/police office in your area for advice”.

According to the UAE Government website, the Judicial Department in Abu Dhabi has an online service called 'Estafser', which helps residents “check whether they are requested by the Public Prosecution for any claims against them”. Residents can use their unified number to get the service.

The Dubai Police offer an online service for residents to check if they have a travel ban due to financial cases in the emirate. Residents need their Emirates ID to use the service on the police website or app.

While diversity in the expat population provides a great advantage to the UAE’s various sectors in terms of economic growth, it also poses the potential risk of non-citizens escaping the country to avoid any legal situations. Thus, as a security measure, the government of the UAE imposes a travel ban upon some residents under various circumstances. If you’re concerned about facing challenges when travelling to and from the country, here is how you can check UAE travel ban status in Dubai and other emirates.

WHAT HAPPENS IF YOU HAVE A UAE TRAVEL BAN?

The UAE immigration travel ban basically restricts you from crossing the country’s borders – whether by entering, re-entering or exiting – via any means of transport until certain requirements have been met to lift the ban. Simply put, you cannot enter or leave the country, unless the ban is lifted. This is what a travel ban in the UAE means.

  • An ongoing criminal investigation
  • Violation of immigration laws

  • Leaving the country without notifying your employer and cancelling the work permit
  • A global outbreak of a disease

How to check travel ban if you are outside the UAE

Living in uae.

If you are not in the country, here is how you can enquire about a travel ban

1.2278635-2026345287

Dubai: If you are planning to travel to the UAE but are concerned that you may have a travel ban due to a previously unresolved court case or outstanding financial dues in the UAE, what is the best course of action to take?

For people inside the country, there are various ways in which you can check if there is a temporary travel ban put in place, by checking the status with your Emirates ID or Unified ID number. You can read our detailed guide on how to check for and lift a travel ban – while you are in the UAE – here.

However, if you are outside the UAE and need to check if a travel ban has been imposed on you, it is advisable to contact a UAE-based law firm to conduct a check on your legal status before visiting UAE. Depending on the case you have been involved in, whether it is a labour dispute, outstanding debt or violation of any immigration laws, the lawyer you hire will conduct a complete check with relevant UAE government authorities to find out whether or not you have a travel ban imposed on you. While this is not a free service, and the cost would depend on the consultation and service fees of the law firm, it is recommended to seek professional assistance for a complete check.

For the legal representative to be able to conduct the check for you, you would need to provide a power of attorney, along with the following details:

• Copy of your valid passport

• If you have been a UAE resident, you would need to provide details of your visa number, Emirates ID as well as any expired passport if the visa had been stamped on it.

• Copy of the last exit stamp when leaving the UAE

The legal representative may then check with the courts, public prosecution, police and immigration departments regarding any cases registered under your name. The benefit of hiring a professional expert is that they can also provide details of the options available to you, in case of a travel ban, and how it can be lifted.

'How can I check if a UAE travel ban is still active?'

By law, travel bans usually last for one year and are automatically lifted at the end of the period.

Airline travelers wait to clear immigration control at the Dubai International Airport in the United Arab Emirates on August 25, 2016. (Photo by Robert Nickelsberg/Getty Images)

Travellers wait to clear immigration at Dubai International Airport. Former residents can check if they have a travel ban on the Dubai Police app. Getty

I overstayed in the UAE after my employer cancelled my work visa as part of a series of layoffs before the 2020 pandemic. The visa was cancelled in July 2020 and I left the country in January 2021.

At the airport, customs gave me the option to pay half of the amount owed for overstay fines with the caveat of a one-year travel ban to the UAE instead of paying the fines in full. I took this option.

Now, more than a year after I left UAE, I wonder if I can travel to the UAE. I have a passport that allows me to get a visa on arrival. How can I find out if the travel ban is still active and what can I do? RR, US

RR has not advised which emirate his visa was issued in but the advice is broadly the same. If a full 12 months has passed, the travel ban will have expired and should be removed from the immigration system.

But the sensible course of action is to check this, as there are occasional cases in which the removal of a travel ban has been overlooked or the system has not updated as it should.

If RR had a Dubai residency visa and still has his Emirates ID number, he can check the travel ban on the Dubai Police app. He can also email [email protected].

For someone who had a visa issued in Abu Dhabi and has their ID number, they should use the Estafser e-service .

If RR had a visa from one of the other five emirates, or no longer has an ID number, he will need to contact the General Directorate of Residents and Foreigner Affairs, which has a main office in each emirate, including Dubai and Abu Dhabi .

The websites give several options for making contact to check the visa status of an individual.

Watch: New UAE labour laws come into effect

New uae labour laws come into effect.

New UAE labour laws come into effect

I work in a company of 30 employees and, except for management, we all do the same job. There really is no difference with the hours we work and most of us have been with the company for two or three years.

I recently found out that we are all paid different amounts. The men are paid more than the women and it is also different depending on our nationality.

My friends here all agree that this is unfair but is there anything we can do? Is it legal to pay staff based on if they are male or female and where they come from? PL, Sharjah

The UAE has laws that specify that all expatriates should be treated equally and fairly. It is covered in the labour law under Federal Decree-Law No 33 of 2021, which came into effect on February 2 this year.

Article 4 of the law, titled Equality and Non-discrimination, states: “Any discrimination on the basis of race, colour, sex, religion, national or social origin or disability which would have the effect of nullifying or impairing equality of opportunity, or prejudicing equal treatment in the employment, the maintenance of a job and the enjoyment of its benefits, is prohibited. Employers are prohibited to discriminate against workers in jobs involving similar tasks.”

It then goes on to say: “A woman is granted a wage equal to the wages of a man if she performs the same work, or an alternative work of equal value. By a resolution of the Cabinet, upon the Minister’s proposal, the procedures, terms and standards necessary for evaluating work of equal value shall be issued.”

Employees have the right to raise a case against an employer with the Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation, as they are breaking the law if everyone does the same work and there is a large disparity in what they are paid.

There are usually some differences due to length of service and seniority but it should not be based on sex or nationality.

If several employees register a case with the ministry, or if all staff ask the company that they are paid equally and fairly that may be beneficial.

How to check the travel ban in UAE

How to check the travel ban in UAE

Although the country welcomes people from all over the world, the UAE is also known for its strict rules and regulations. While the diversity of the foreign population provides great benefits to the various sectors of the UAE in terms of economic growth, it also poses a potential risk for non-citizens who leave the country to avoid any legal situation. Therefore, as a safety and precautionary measure, the government is imposing travel bans for UAE residents under various circumstances

This ensures that everyone is held accountable for breaking any laws. If you are planning to travel abroad, “What is the reason for the travel ban in the UAE?” and “How can I check the UAE travel ban?” are some general questions. Let’s get to know them in more detail.

What if you have a travel ban in the UAE?

The travel ban for immigrants in the UAE basically restricts the crossing of the country’s borders by any means of transport – be it entry, re-entry or exit – until certain requirements are met.

Reasons for the travel ban in the UAE

If you want to travel abroad, it is recommended to go through the UAE Immigration Ban check to avoid any unforeseen and adverse situations at the airport immigration counter. There are many reasons for a travel ban. The most common ones include:

  • Criminal investigation continues
  • Violation of immigration laws
  • Outstanding financial debt
  • Rental disputes
  • Work without a valid work permit
  • Delayed visa
  • Leaving the country without notifying the employer and canceling the work permit

How to check the travel ban in Dubai

There are four ways to check the entry ban at the UAE Immigration Office:

  • If someone brings a criminal case against them for financial reasons, residents can go to the Dubai police station for a personal investigation.
  • A convenient way to understand the status of the UAE visa ban is to call. You need to provide your passport number and some other details to the call center agent. Dubai residents can call toll-free 800-5111 to get in touch with Amer. For use abroad, call + 971-4-313-9999. It is also the best way to check the UAE travel ban status by looking at your passport number.
  • If you are faced with a possible travel ban, you can also hire a lawyer/attorney to conduct thorough due diligence on your behalf. If it is possible to issue you an arrest warrant, this is the best option. Also, if you are not in the UAE, sometimes getting checked by a lawyer is the only way to check the UAE travel ban.
  • Another way to instantly understand the UAE travel ban status is to check online on the Dubai Police government website. Let’s take a closer look at the online method:

1- How to view prohibited UAE checks online?

Answer: You can visit the Dubai Police website or download the Dubai Police App. You only need a valid UAE ID to check the status online.

2- What happens if I receive a travel ban?

Answer: You will not be able to cross national borders. If you have been granted a travel ban, you cannot enter, re-enter or leave the country unless the travel ban is lifted.

3- Which Dubai Police Hotline can I call for assistance in the event of a travel ban?

Answer. The Dubai Police Helpline No. 901 will help you with the travel ban.

4- If I have not paid any financial debts, can I get an entry ban on my visa?

Answer: Yes, if I have not paid any financial debts, your visa will be prohibited from traveling. It is recommended that you pay off all debts and not get involved in any legal matters.

5- How to check the status of your United Arab Emirates travel ban in Abu Dhabi?

Answer: You can check the online service launched by the Abu Dhabi Ministry of Justice for details of the travel ban.

Travel Ban in the UAE: 7 Common Reasons Explained

Main Points

7 Common Reasons for Travel Ban in the UAE: Know the Restrictions:

Travel ban can be imposed in the UAE for administrative or legal reasons, either by executive bodies like the Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs, and Ports Security (ICP) or by court orders. Here are the various instances that may lead to a travel ban:

  • Visa Overstay
  • Absconding Case
  • Defaulting on a Bank Loan
  • Late Rent Payment
  • Criminal Cases
  • Civil or Commercial Cases
  • Acting as a Guarantor

1.Visa Overstay

When someone overstays their visa in the UAE, they are in violation of the country’s immigration laws. As a consequence, they might face deportation, and after leaving the country, a travel ban may be imposed to prevent them from re-entering.

2. Absconding Case:

An absconding case is filed by employers against employees who have abandoned their jobs without notice or have not reported to work for a certain period. The Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation (MOHRE) takes such cases seriously, and if a ban is placed, it can only be lifted by the employer (sponsor) or by proving the case invalid to the relevant authorities.

3. Defaulting on a Bank Loan:

If someone defaults on their bank loan or credit card payment, the bank may take legal action to recover the dues. This action may involve presenting a security cheque issued by the individual. If the cheque bounces or the bank seeks full payment through a court order, an immediate travel ban can be imposed.

4. Late Rent Payment:

Failure to respond to the landlord’s rent payment notice or not meeting tenant obligations can lead to a travel ban. The Rental Dispute Centre (RDC) intervenes in such cases to enforce rental agreements and ensure landlords’ rights are protected.

5. Criminal Cases:

For ongoing criminal investigations or court cases, an administrative authority may issue a circular to prevent the accused person from leaving the country until the case is resolved and the verdict is implemented. In severe criminal cases, like drug use or assault, leading to deportation, a travel ban may prevent re-entry to the UAE after deportation.

6. Civil or Commercial Cases:

In civil or commercial cases involving non-payment of dues by a company or family court guardianship disputes, a travel ban can be imposed as a precautionary measure until the legal proceedings are concluded.
