About Korcula

Commonly referred to as a “miniature Dubrovnik ”, it’s been said that Korcula encompasses the very best this country has to offer. From its glorious vineyards, plentiful olive groves and sleepy hamlets, to its dense woodland, sandy beaches and peaceful coves, this is undoubtedly one of the Adriatic’s most stunning destinations.

The island is the sixth largest in Croatia, spanning approximately 50km in length, and is fairly well-inhabited with a population of around 3,000. The locals take great pride in their island’s heritage and culture, with age-old traditions such as the Moreška sword dance still upheld in the numerous religious and folk festivities that adorn the calendar. Korcula is also renowned for its wines, with one of Croatia’s best wines being produced from the pošipgrapes that grow on the island. Around Lumbarda – where our villa is located – the grk grape is also used to produce a top quality dry white wine.

Korcula’s most popular attraction is its Old town, often referred to as the “Little Dubrovnik” owing to its gleaming orange rooftops, majestic stone walls and round defense towers. The town is compact but contains many beautifully preserved squares, churches and palaces which date from the early 13th century. One of Korcula’s main claims to fame is as the birthplace of the intrepid explorer Marco Polo, and you’ll have the chance to view the house where he’s said to have resided and to learn more about his life and travels in the dedicated museum.

  • 928chichengh 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Simply Amazing. We love Zoran, his family, and this team. Captain Zoran, his family, and staff were simply amazing. They were so family friendly with our two teenage daughters. We went snorkeling, diving off of the cliffs, hiking in a national park, swimming the Adriatic sea, and simply relaxing on their boats this summer 2023. I really enjoyed learning and watching the team look for sea urchins. The food was healthy and absolutely delicious. Climbing up the cliff and watching my youngest daughter jump into the blue waters was the best part of it for me. Their ethics and integrity are impeccable. Lastly, they were kind and generous people. 5+Stars. The Huang Family Read more Written November 26, 2023
  • ianmcgin 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles A relaxed, personal tour of a beautiful national park My wife and I had a fantastic time on this tour, definitely a first-class experience. Captain Zoran and his first mate, also Zoran, rolled out the red carpet and it was a great day. There were only six of us, so it was a very personal experience. Mljet Park is incredibly scenic, and after we took the boat ride to the monastery (a must-do!), we had plenty of time to swim and enjoy the park. The lunch spread was excellent, with wine and a large variety of charcuterie. I highly recommend this tour if you prefer a less-crowded, more relaxed experience. Read more Written October 27, 2023

  • helenb-pollock 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles The Perfect Family Holiday I promised Zoran before we left the beautiful island of Korcula I would faithfully write a review of our holiday to express our gratitude of the wonderful time we had staying with Korcula Adventures. We arrived into Split and missed the last fast ferry service from the harbout, but as part of our package Korcula Adventures had arranged a driver to collect us from the airport and transfer us by road to the Island. The roadtrip is over 3 hours and you will also have a short 20 min ferry journey before stepping foot on Korcula itself. We stayed in a Luxury apartment in Korcula Hills, which was a 5 min walk to the Beach Club La Banya. NOTE - its called Korcula Hillls for as reason, the walk to and from the beach club does get your heart pumping and can be pretty steep if you are not used to a bit of exercise, but the view from the apartment is amazing. The apartment was clean, nicely decorated and very functional with everything you should need if you are self catering. Two ensuite bedrooms, and even a further 3rd toilet in case you should need it. Breach towels were supplied daily at the reception, and the pink beach towels also secured you a free sun bed at the beach club were otherwise guest are charged for usage. There is a small grocery store around 15 min walk away, otherwise a much larger supermarket which can be found on the road into Korcula Town. As part of the package with KA we had breakfast at the beach club inc. The food was always fresh and generous portions. Its a table service with hot and cold choices, fresh juice and good coffee. The beach club also serves food all day and has a pool. Food here was always good and again generous portions. There is one other restaurant within walking distance called MiMis, which is also beach front location and good food. Each day KA had an activity planned for us. (Snorkerling, Buggy Safari, Sea Kayaking, Wake Boarding, Cave trip and Snorkerling/Paddle Boarding). The majority of the trips it was just us (as a family of 3), so it felt like a VIP experience being tailored just for us. Ivan, Ivan or Andre who were all part of Zoran's team, were always pleasant, helpful and nothing was too much trouble. All the activities were fun and whats not to love about swimming in the crystal clear waters. Lunch was also included and depending on the activity could be at a small taverner in the hills (buggy Safari), a beach side fish restaurant or cooked and supplied by our hosts, either onboard or served in the Captains Villa. The food was always fresh and delicious. NOTE if you have a fussy eater in your group, I would also take your own snacks as a backup. All the equipment that we used in our activities was top quality and well looked after. Activities were well thought about and guests were always asked if they have any preference over some of the details of the day. What we loved about the holiday. All the hard stuff about deciding what to do each day was done for us. We enjoyed doing activities that we would never normally do, and then having the opportunity to go and do our own things in the afternoons and evenings. Accommodation worked really well, and the free electric taxi to and from town was a lovely bonus. Would we come again... yes I believe we will, we want to bring friends or family next time so we can share the experience with others. Korcula is a lovely tranquil place and I think we only touched the surface of it in our weeks stay. Read more Written September 30, 2023

  • michaelbG4545VV 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Tick,tick,tick - perfect in every way WOW This was my 3rd time with Korcula adventures and it definetely didnt disappoint, We were met at Vela Luka by Ivan one of Captain Zorans team and from that moment onwards we had lovely scenery, were given fantastic knowledge of the Island and made to feel very comfortable. We were taken to the Captains Villa where we stayed in the penthouse apartment which had a balcony with such a beautiful view over the bay that we didnt want to ever leave. Every morning we had breakfast, and there you had so many different choices - all served by Blaza who seemed to be endlessly preparing, cooking and serving wonderful food. Whilst there we had use of a speed boat and car which helped us see the Islands by land and sea The excursions we went on were fantastic with sight seeing followed by a great lunch aboard the boat and a swim in the Adriatic which has the clearest water ever. An on shore trip we took was on the beach buggies, this was lead by Andre and Nicco who took us up over the mountain to a most beautiful secluded bay where we could swim,snorkel and just relax a while, then back up again to an outstanding restuarant, again secluded, for such a fantastic meal, very nice wine and beautiful views. Andre and Nicco were nice and total professionals and made us feel so relaxed. The holiday went so quickly and we feel we still have so much to see and do that we are looking already to returning next year. Captain Zoran, Blaza and the whole team worked increadibly hard in making our holiday just the best and made sure everything on our tick list was catered for. This has definitely been one of our best holidays ever. Read more Written September 24, 2023
  • 300trishab 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Our favourite place to be ❤ We just had our 3rd visit to Captain Zoran, Blaza and the Team and our holidays with them just keep getting better and better. From our wonderful breakfast layout each morning (and the special treats Blaza prepared for us) our days were enjoyable, educational and fun packed luxury. The excursions are brilliant and have taken us to some of the most beautiful Islands and National Parks there are, but equally wonderful is Korcula itself from its historic Old Town and quaint churches, shops, restaurants and alleyways to some of the most stunning beaches and bays with crystal clear water and views to die for. One of our favourite days was going out on the beach buggies through tranquil olive groves and the pine forest to reach one such bay- we shared this trip with another group of lovely people from America and it was unforgettable- after our swim in the bay we were treated to a fabulous meal in a gorgeous rustic restaurant with a wonderful atmosphere and what has to be one of the best views on the Island- after which we ended the day at another beautiful beach for relaxing cocktails in a picturesque beach bar. This was just one among many fantastic trips and memories made with friends. The attention to detail that Captain Zoran, Blaza and the team give is amazing. We feel we have found our own little piece of heaven and can't wait to return. Read more Written September 24, 2023
  • vez5 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles FABULOUS GREEN & BLUE CAVE TOUR We came to Korcula to celebrate my husbands 60th birthday with family and friends. 14 of us in all. With Zoran’s help it turned out to be even better than we could have imagined. I really can’t thank Zoran and the team from Korcula Adventures enough. From the first email Zoran helped me plan the perfect day as we really wanted to see the Blue Cave which is not easy to do from korcula. When I said it was for a 60th birthday he organised the most delicious cake that we are all still talking about. Lunch of fresh prosciutto cheese salad breads and wine/drinks were beautifully set out after our stops at the magnificent green and blue caves! Even supplied a bottle of champagne to celebrate the day! Whilst swimming snorkel sets and paddle boards were available to use. On the journey back saw an amazing sunset. The boat is incredible and so comfortable. This was a day our family will never forget memories to cherish. Thank you again Korcula Adventures for a fantastic day and we will be recommending you to all our family and friends if they come to Korcula! Read more Written September 22, 2023

If you love being out on the water on a fantastic yacht with an amazing crew, this is the trip for you! Zoran, Blaza, Z and the rest of the team provided the best customer service I have ever experienced, hands down. We started the day with a lovely homemade breakfast and headed out for our excursion at one of the historic sites in the area. We loved all of our day trips and our guides were extremely knowledgeable, approachable, personable and fun! Lunch was served on the boat and then we had lots of free time to play in the water in the amazing Adriatic Sea before heading home to a well-appointed villa for some down time before going to several of the best restaurants I have ever eaten at. The fish is so fresh and flavorful and the local fruits and vegetables delightful. Zoran and his team have so much experience in the industry and were on point and beyond compare. Captain Zoran kept planning simple for us and adjusted where needed, either based on travel complications or our preference. The food and wine were local, healthy, plentiful, and delicious with restaurant recommendations which we came to rely on and always delivered. This is the very best package vacation which I have ever taken, and I can’t wait to recommend both Croatia and Korcula Adventures to friends and family. I was uncertain about the national parks but found them fascinating because of the established adventuring pace and because of Z’s historical interpretation. Truly, Z’s depth of Croatian and European knowledge enriched our excursions beyond measure. We enjoyed Villa Marta - be sure to lower the window shades before going to bed. There should be more towels at the house, but that’s the only constructive criticism. Two enthusiastic thumbs for Korcula Adventures!! Read more Written September 15, 2023

We enjoyed our time on the boat cruising to the surrounding islands. The accommodations are incredible and comfortable with views, pool, hot tub, and arranged limo rides to breakfast and the boat. Our breakfasts were served in an atrium filled with light and homemade food. The guided tours and historical knowledge of the tour guides are impressive and made each destination all the more interesting for conversation and exploring the lush islands of Croatia. Jane – Summer 2023 “ We had such a lovely, relaxing time as a family. Mario was so friendly and generous. I wanted you to know how much we enjoyed it .. it was the highlight of our trip to Korcula.”

Amanda – Summer 2023 “Everything was fantastic! We had an amazing time.”

Michelle – Summer 2022 Our family had a private tour with Mario around the archipelago of Korcula. He was knowledgeable about the island’s history and clearly loved sharing this knowledge. Mario cooked us a fantastic meal to round out the morning, of which not a drop was left. Highly recommend Mario for your Korcula tour needs.

In addition, booking with Korcula Explorer was extremely easy and quick. Found Rachael to be very responsive to my inquiries and followed through on our booking. Highly recommend!

Ruth – Summer 2022 We also did the island boat tour with the amazing Mario. The boat trip was a highlight of our trip to the island. Mario cooked the most delicious meal of BBQ fish and vegetables, all washed down with local wine. The scenery was stunning, the water pristine for swimming and snorkelling .

I would highly recommend both the boat trip and the Food and Wine tour with Korcula Explorer. Thank you Rachael and Mario 😊

Description

See all the gems of historical and cultural center of the capital in short time and without traffic jams or tiresome walking.

Depending on the itinerary and duration of the Moscow River boat trip, the tour can be 3 or 5 hours.

Highlights of the tour

  • St Basil’s Cathedral;
  • Stalin skyscraper on Kotelnicheskaya (Tinkers) embankment;
  • The Kremlin;
  • “House on the Embankment” Stalin skyscraper;
  • Monument to Peter I;
  • The Central House of Artists;
  • Christ the Savior Cathedral;
  • Gorky Park;
  • Moscow State University;
  • Russian Academy of Sciences;
  • Luzhniki stadium;
  • Novodevichy Monastery;
  • Kiev railway station;
  • Europe Square;
  • Moscow City Hall;
  • Government House;
  • Expocentre Exhibition Complex;
  • and other famous sights.

You will learn about the different epochs of the city from the foundation in 1147 till Soviet times of 20 th  century.

Moscow River

Moskva river has the form of a snake and is the main waterway of Moscow, consisting of a cascade of reservoirs. Within the city, Moskva river is 80 km long, 120 m - 200 m wide and up to 14 m deep. The narrowest part of the river is the Kremlin area in the city center, and the most extensive is around the Luzhniki Stadium in the south.

Bridges in Moscow

Undoubtedly, bridges and embankments are among the most scenic spots and main attractions of Moscow. Plus, they are so romantic.

  • Bolshoy Kamenny Bridge –  Great Stone Bridge –  is the main bridge of Moscow . The first stone bridge was constructed here in the 17th century.
  • Patriarshy Bridge  is one of the youngest pedestrian bridges, built in 2004. The bridge connects the iconic Christ the Saviour Cathedral with funky Bersenevskaya embankment, extremely popular place among locals for its trendy art galleries, cafes and panoramic views. Patriarshy Bridge used to be a shooting location for ex-Russian President Dmitry Medvedev's New Year speech to the nation.
  • Borodinsky Bridge,  erected in honor of the 100th anniversary of the glorious victory in the Battle of Borodino (which every Russian kid knows about), a fierce legendary battle during the Russo-French war of 1812.
  • Bagration Bridge  one of the  pedestrian bridges with most picturesque views of the Moskva River with its numerous upper-level observation platforms. The bridge was erected to celebrate the 850th anniversary of Moscow city in 1997.
  • Krymsky Bridge  used to be in Top 5 Europe’s longest bridges some 100 years ago. The bridge got its name after the ancient Krymsky ford which Crimean Tartars used to invade Moscow in the 16 th  century.

Embankments of Moscow

Moscow river boats 37 embankments, the most popular being Kremlevskaya, Sofiyskaya, Pushkinskaya, Vorobyovskaya and Kolomenskaya.

You can get the most spectacular views of the Kremlin from  Kremlevskaya and Sofiyskaya embankments.

  • Pushkinkaya embankment  is the most romantic in Moscow. It meanders along Gorky Park and Neskuchnyi garden and is rich for all kinds of entertainment as well as cozy nooks, including Olivkovy beach, the famous Zeleny theater as well as a pier for river cruisers.
  • Vorobyevskaya embankment  is part of Sparrow Hills nature reserve. This place opens a beautiful panorama of the river and city from the observation deck and is considered to be the place for taking serious decisions in life.
  • Embankment in Kolomenskoye  Museum-Reserve has a special charm due to its peculiar geographical relief. The boat trip around Kolomenskoye would be the most peaceful in your life.
  • Taras Shevchenko embankment  is popular among photographers for its modern Moscow City skyscrapers. Highly recommended for your night boat trip.
  • Embankments of Moscow are the pride of the capital. A distinctive feature of each of the promenades is its architecture and beautiful views. In addition, almost all the embankments of Moscow have a rich history and a lot of notable buildings.

Different epochs

Taking a walk along the Moskva River by boat, you will witness the architecture of Moscow from different eras and styles. Archaeological studies indicate that already in the XI century there stood a fortified settlement on Borovitsky hill, which is now called the Kremlin. Little fortress could not accommodate all the residents of the rapidly growing city, and the Grand Duke ordered the construction of a new Kremlin, larger than the former.

Boat trip around Kolomenskoe Park

Moscow river boat trip starts from the pier Klenovy (Maple) Boulevard and provides reat views of Nicholas Perervinsky monastery.

Nicholas Perervinsky monastery was founded at the time of the Battle of Kulikov (1380). The monastery, got its name from the surrounding area – “Pererva”, which can be translated like “tear off” and because of the location –  here it abruptly changed its course, turning to Kolomna, standing on the opposite bank.

Nowadays Kolomenskoye is State Art, Historical, Architectural and Natural Landscape Museum-Reserve, which doors are open to everyone who wants to get in touch with the ancient history of Russia.

Take a break from the big city hustle in the shady parks and gardens of the Kolomenskoe Museum-Reserve. Don’t miss a wonderful Church of the Ascension and Tsar Alexey’s Palace in Kolomenskoye!

Monasteries and temples

  • Novospassky Monastery
  • Founded in the 13th century on the site where now is located the Danilovsky monastery. After a few decades, in 1330, Ivan Kalita moved the monastery onto the Borovitskii hill of the Kremlin. However, in the 15th century, Spassky Monastery again moved, this time to a more spacious place on Krasnoholmskaya waterfront.
  • Church of St. Nicholas in Zayaitskom
  • Erected in the middle of the XVIII century in baroque style. The building survived after the 1812 fire, but the utensils were destoyed. Parishioners collected donations and restored the temple on their own. In Soviet times, it was closed and re-opened only in 1992.
  • Cathedral of Christ the Savior
  • The church was originally erected in honor of the victory over Napoleon and was being under construction for long 44 years. Notoriously demolished in 1937 to be a giant swimming pool under open sky. The current building was constructed in 1990s. It is the tallest and one of the largest Orthodox churches in the world.
  • The temple was built in 1679-82, during the reign of Tsar Fedor Alekseevich, in late Muscovite Baroque style and can be characterized as bonfire temple. Each gable is a symbol of a heavenly fire.
  • Novodevichy Convent
  • The most famous concent and monastery in Moscow, presumably founded in 1524. Novodevichy’s status has always been high among other monasteries, it was in this monastery where the women of the royal blood, the wives of Tsars and local rulers of Moscow were kept in prison as nuns.
  • St. Andrew’s church  (male acts as Compound Patriarch of Moscow)
  • St. Andrew’s church stands right on the slopes of the Sparrow Hills, on the way down to the Moskva River, on the territory of the Nature Reserve “Sparrow Hills”. The monastery is small in size but is very cozy. It’s situated in a quiet courtyard surrounded by temples, fruit trees and flowers.
