This US airline will be the first to offer nonstop flights from New York to Tokyo

york travel news aa

American Airlines will be the first U.S. carrier to serve Tokyo from New York when it launches service to Haneda from JFK on June 28.

“This new service will complement flights offered by our joint business partner, Japan Airlines, giving more ways for our customers travel between the U.S. and Japan,” Brian Znotins, American’s Senior Vice President of Network and Schedule Planning said in a statement.

Travelers from JFK would previously have had to fly All Nippon Airways (ANA) or Japan Airlines, or connect through another city to reach Tokyo.

Tickets for the flights went on sale on Feb. 26.

The Japan-bound flight will depart JFK at 11:25 a.m. and arrive in Haneda at 2:30 p.m. the next day. The return flight leaves Haneda at 4:30 p.m. daily and arrives at JFK at 4:35 p.m. the same day. Flights take about 12 hours and 50 minutes between the two airports, but because they cross the international dateline, it seems like the return to the US takes no time at all.

United Airlines offers direct flights from Newark to Narita, Japan.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — The arrest of two of Philadelphia’s LGBTQ leaders by a state trooper during a fraught highway traffic stop is “very concerning,” the city’s mayor said after a video showing some of what happened circulated on social media.

Celena Morrison leads the city’s Office of LGBT Affairs and is a top aide to Mayor Cherelle Parker. Morrison’s husband, Darius McLean, runs a community center. Both are Black, while the Pennsylvania state trooper appears to be white.

“I don’t know why he’s doing this,” McLean cries to his wife Saturday morning as she records him being handcuffed, lying on his side, on the shoulder of the elevated highway during a rainstorm. Cars pass by a few feet away.

“It’s ‘cause I’m Black,” McLean says.

“It’s not ’cause you’re Black,” replies the trooper, who leaves McLean handcuffed on the highway shoulder and then moves to arrest Morrison.

“Turn around! Give me your hands or you’re getting Tased!” the trooper tells her as she says she works for the mayor. She apparently drops the phone at that point, and the video shows only the gray sky above.

Both Morrison, 51, and McLean, 35, were detained on obstruction and resisting arrest charges after the 9 a.m. traffic stop. However, District Attorney Larry Krasner did not immediately file the charges while he investigates.

“A video circulating on social media that depicts a portion of the incident is very concerning to me,” the mayor said in a statement, adding that she will wait until the investigation concludes before saying more.

State police, which patrol the state highway that cuts through the city, declined to identify the trooper, but said he was put on restrictive duty Monday and will not be on patrol while the incident is investigated. The trooper’s patrol unit does not yet have body cameras, and the agency declined to release dashboard camera video.

In the cellphone video posted online, the trooper says he stopped Morrison for tailgating and not having lights on. McLean, chief operating officer of the William Way LGBT Community Center, apparently pulled over in a second vehicle and was arrested after allegedly arguing with the officer.

“Do you want to get tased? Put your hands behind your back!” the trooper shouts as he stands over him on the roadway.

“They are! They are!” McLean cries.

“I don’t know who you are so I don’t need someone rolling up on me,” the trooper says.

“That is my husband ... That’s my husband, please,” Morrison can be heard saying out of view. “I work for the mayor. I work for the mayor.”

Morrison, who is transgender, has held the position since 2020, staying on when Parker took office in January.

Chris Bartlett, executive director of the William Way Center, called the traffic stop “unjust” in a post on the group’s social media site and said the center “was working with officials to remedy this terrible situation.”

By Ivan Nechepurenko ,  Alina Lobzina and Victoria Kim

A building in central Moscow housing government ministries was struck by a drone Tuesday for the second time in 48 hours, as Ukrainian officials make it increasingly clear that they are not going to allow the war to be limited to their own soil.

“Moscow is rapidly getting used to a full-fledged war,” Mykhailo Podolyak, an adviser to Mr. Zelensky, said pointedly in a tweet on Tuesday.

Moscow’s mayor, Sergey Sobyanin, said the drone had hit the 21st floor of a tower that was damaged in an earlier strike over the weekend. Two other drones were shot down on the outskirts of Moscow, Russia’s Defense Ministry said, while a third was reported downed in Sevastopol, in Russia-occupied Crimea.

Ukraine has been generally coy when it comes to attacks within Russia’s borders, but in recent days President Volodymyr Zelensky and other top officials have signaled that the strikes are part of Kyiv’s strategy. Video of the latest attacks strongly suggested that one of the drones was a Ukrainian-made long-range model identified by The New York Times .

Though Russia has been little scathed by the attacks, they have managed to reach deep into its territory, where they have struck targets both symbolic and military, and rattled some nerves.

On Tuesday, Dmitri S. Peskov, the Kremlin’s spokesman, said that “there is a clear threat” and that “measures are being taken” to improve defenses of the capital. At the same time, the Russian authorities have tried to play down the risk.

The glass-facade high-rise that was struck twice in recent days in Moscow houses the ministries of digital development, economy and industrial development, but the Defense Ministry said the drone had been electronically jammed and lost control before crashing into the building.

The drone attack on Moscow was at least the fourth attempt in just over a week. Over the weekend, Mr. Zelensky said that the war “is returning to the territory of Russia — to its symbolic centers and military bases,” and described that shift as “inevitable, natural and absolutely fair.”

The damage in Russia, of course, is miniscule compared to the devastation Moscow’s troops have inflicted in Ukraine. On Tuesday alone, a Russian missile hit a clinic in the southern city of Kherson, killing a newly graduated doctor on his first day of work, seriously wounding a nurse and injuring three other medical workers.

In Moscow, by contrast, it was unclear if anyone was injured in the drone attack the same day.

City residents were encouraged by government-controlled media to take the new chapter of their lives in stride, and many appeared to be doing just that.

Mirlan Yzakov, who owns an investment company with an office in the Moscow City tower complex that was hit this weekend, said that he had learned about the drone strike on the news and that it had not affected his business. His team continues to work from their offices, he said.

“This is the time of conflict, a conflict of interests, so this is a natural procedure,” Mr. Yzakov said in a phone interview. “We live in a difficult time.”

Some Russians have had trouble adjusting to the idea that they, too, may now be in the cross hairs, however remote the risk.

Maksim Khodyrev, a real estate agent who specializes in the Moscow City area, said that he had begun to receive letters from apartment tenants saying that “they can no longer feel themselves safe” and “are thinking about canceling lease agreements.”

The country’s nationalist bloggers have tried to portray the attacks as an act of desperation by Ukraine, aimed at creating media noise because the Ukrainian counteroffensive is sputtering.

“There is zero military damage,” Andrei Perla, a political commentator for Tzargrad, an ultranationalist television channel, wrote on Telegram on Sunday after the first attack. “But there is a psychological effect.”

Many Russians are just trying to push the bad news out of their minds, Aleksandr Kynev, a Russian political analyst, wrote on the same platform.

“People are consciously or unconsciously ignoring it,” he wrote. “They want to shut themselves from it, because they want to preserve their lives to be as normal as possible.”

News and Analysis

Russia launched a missile strike  on the southern Ukrainian city of Odesa while President Volodymyr Zelensky of Ukraine and Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis of Greece were visiting. Neither leader was hurt.

More than two years into their wartime alliance, the bond between the United States and Ukraine is showing signs of wear and tear , giving way to mutual frustration and a feeling that the relationship might be stuck in a bit of a rut.

The capture of the eastern Ukrainian city of Avdiivka  was the Russians’ most significant gain in nine months . Among the reasons for their success were dwindling Ukrainian ammunition , declining Western aid and poor Ukrainian defenses .

Helping the War Effort: Since the early days of the war, thousands of Ukrainian volunteers have led crowdfunding efforts that have been crucial in supplying the military with equipment. But as the conflict drags on, it is becoming harder to raise money .

Holding a Sliver of Hope: A Russian mother knows her son, a conscript, died 14 months ago in a battle in eastern Ukraine. But she is still waiting for him.

A Long Fight: On the second anniversary  of Russia’s invasion, many weary but determined Ukrainians  are taking a longer view of the war , pinpointing the Maidan uprising of 2014 as the start of a 10-year conflict with their adversary.
