Tour (see complete list of dates below) will again share the stage with some of the finest orchestras in the US and Canada. Produced by Live Nation, the kick-off date is April 22 in Ft. Lauderdale, FL at the Hard Rock Live for the spring leg of the tour and returns in the fall on October 2 in Toronto, ON at Scotiabank Arena. The Who are hitting most of the cities they were set to play in 2020 with multiple new stops, including shows in New Orleans, LA at the New Orleans Jazz Festival on April 30, a much-anticipated performance at New York City’s Madison Square Garden on May 26 and a long-awaited return to Cincinnati after an absence of 43 years. After a summer break, The Who will continue in the fall, including stops in Chicago, IL at United Center on October 12, and in Los Angeles at the Hollywood Bowl on November 1. The Who Hits Back! Tour winds down with two shows in Las Vegas, NV on November 4 and 5 at Dolby Live.

THE WHO HITS BACK! Tour will feature The Who ’s full live band comprising guitarist/backup singer Simon Townshend , keyboardist Loren Gold , second keyboardist Emily Marshall , bassist Jon Button , drummer Zak Starkey and backing vocals by Billy Nicholls , along with orchestra conductor Keith Levenson , principal violinist Katie Jacoby and principal cellist Audrey Snyder , passionately delivering The Who’s many classics, as well as songs from their most recent album, WHO .

Commenting on The Who Hits Back! Tour , Roger Daltrey says, “Pete and I said we’d be back, but we didn’t think we’d have to wait for two years for the privilege. This is making the chance to perform feel even more special this time around. So many livelihoods have been impacted due to Covid, so we are thrilled to get everyone back together – the band, the crew and the fans.  We’re gearing up for a great show that hits back in the only way The Who know how.  By giving it everything we’ve got.”

The Who’s wildly successful 2019 MOVING ON! Tour brought the band’s iconic brand of incomparable rock through 29 cities, including a rollicking sold-out show in Boston’s historic Fenway Park ( above ), and a memorable Seattle show where Pearl Jam frontman Eddie Vedder joined them onstage for a rousing version of ‘The Punk And the Godfather’. The tour generated the most unanimous outpouring of acclaim from critics and fans of any live rock show in 2019, winning raves across North America for the orchestral dynamic as well as the duo’s cathartic rock firepower and intimate acoustic numbers. “They’re not getting older. They’re getting better. You better, you better, you bet.” hailed the Worcester Telegram , with Pollstar Magazine affirming “Daltrey is in peak form, and so is Townshend, lavishing his trademarked windmill guitar motion.”

WOW. So glad you are touring America. I saw you at Jazz Fest last time. Thinking maybe Chicago in the Fall this time if two of my sons will meet me there! Love you

' src=

What the Hell, no date for Indianapolis?!

' src=

The presale starts on the 8th. Will I be sent a link if I am a member?

' src=

Iman, Fan Club pre-sale starts at 10.00am local time on Wednesday 9th February. Fan Club pre-sale access codes will be emailed to you at 8.00am local time Wednesday 9th February.

' src=

do you have to be vaccinated to attend shows? Thank you

Check with the venue, Jim.

' src=

Will we have any meet & greet opportunities?

' src=

Your last show at Fenway park was fantastic with Peter Wolf and the midnight travelers that was fantastic! When I buy a ticket to the next show at the Boston garden is it possible to be let in with a semi professional camera and lens to take some shots from my seat that would be wonderful? Thank you and rock on!

Barton, you would need to check with the venue as they may have certain rules regarding cameras and photography.

' src=

Great dates to see the boys in the Northeast! Can’t wait!

' src=

British dates, please Lads! 🙂

' src=

Can’t Wait To See The Guys Again …#11 for me!!

Will I finally be able to use my tickets from the cancelled show in Dallas Texas which was never rescheduled?

Tickets for cancelled shows were all refunded.

' src=

No Detroit show ??? 😲😥 Don’t mean to sound selfish, but I turned 52 yesterday, & I’ve never seen The Who.😟 Who? THE WHO 🤘👏⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐✌🏻💜🌹

' src=

It’s a shame tickets are so expensive. Especially for those of us that have been fans for almost half a century. I would love to see them again in Cincinnati to let them know how much we love & support them…The Who rocks!!!

' src=

Is this an all ages show? My daughters favorite band and it would be her dream to see them live. We would be attending the Boston event.

Yes, it is, Rachelle. But worth checking with the individual venues.

' src=

Looks like there will be no UK Tour in 2022. I had tickets for one of the cancelled shows during Covid. Luckily I saw the Tour at Wembley Stadium. Still seeing Roger at the Palladium in July should keep me going.

' src=

So excited!!

Think lucky, Be lucky

' src=

What is the presale code for the Cincinnati show?

Fan Club pre-sale access codes will be emailed to you at 8.00am local time Wednesday 9th February.

' src=

Fantastic news from The Who especially for the USA fans Disappointing for the UK fans being pushed back again after cancelling the UK leg of the moving on tour.. Hope its because they don’t want to clash with Rogers solo tour.. But certainly look forward to seeing the videos and pictures from the gigs in the USA… Enjoy..

' src=

Hello! Will you come to europe/holland this year?

' src=

When will fan club members receive the advance access passcode?

' src=

I was at this concert December 3, 1979 Cincinnati’s riverfront coliseum . It was a cold night close to 20,000 people waiting outside of the doors when the stadium personnel finally decided to open the doors they only opened for doors for all the people to go through the crowd began pushing and shoving to get towards the doors because they Heard the music starting to play and they began to push from the back towards the front and this continued back and forth in the crowd until people in the front got pushed right through the windows as I got pushed back and forth I turned around and ran back to the edge of the Colosseum rail to get out of the crowd that was squishing everybody when I got to the back I saw a bunch of people laying on the ground with paramedics around them none of them were moving I waited for the crowd to disperse and go inside I lost one of my shoes in the process of getting out of the crowd I told myself I would find it when I go inside when I got inside the door there was at least 10,000 shoes laying on the ground that had been trampled off of peoples feet rushing to get in luckily I found a pair of shoes rather large I jumped in them and went on into the concertI didn’t realize until the next day that all those people I saw up on the walkway had died from being squished that was the worst part of the night the concert was great!

' src=

One of the most original bands to front rock music! That’s right, front! Innovative, classical, and using instruments that only our ears would know. “WHO’S NEXT,” we are! Looking forward to hearing and seeing Pete Townshend put his moves all over the stage, Roger!!!

' src=

Will there be any UK dates ?

' src=

I can’t wait to feel the energy and sing every song with 2 of the best who have ever done it!!!The music is incomparable and the songs are timeless. As far as music goes, there is no place I’d rather be then at a Who show!!!

' src=

I’ve been a fan and a collector since 1979! Seen you in Philli with The Clash, D.C many times and now live in NC. The Quadrophenia tour in Greensboro, NC. was phenomenal.

' src=

' src=

We want you back in Mexico!!!!

' src=

Will there be an opening band for any of the shows?

' src=

Roger had bronchitis in September of 2019 and had to postphone the Denver show. Then Covid postponed it agin. I have been waiting three years for the rescheduled concert. Can I use my tickets from the 2019 show for this show in October of 2022? If not, how can I get my refund?

Robby, all shows on the 2019 tour were cancelled and tickets refunded.

' src=

Seen them with my son on the who hits 50 tour, need 1 more dose of pure rock n roll before I ride off into the sunset

' src=

Any opening acts on this tour?

' src=

Can’t wait. First Who show was 1968 at the San Jose Civic Auditorium. But no show in the SF Bay Area this time? That’s not right! Any chance of one being added?

' src=

My 1st concert. 1976 Denver Colorado

' src=

Will Roger and Pete be doing any meet and greet packages this tour?

' src=

Saw The Who at Hollywood Bowl last time around. One of my absolute favorite concerts ever! Will be back again this year! Thanks!

' src=

Thrilled to see you coming back to Colorado! We’ve missed you terribly and so happy you’re hitting it back!

' src=

I first saw them in Pontiac Michigan at the Silverdome on their first FAREWELL TOUR in 1982.I met Roger Daltrey in Heathrow Airport that December. He was a perfect gentleman!! I next saw them at Live Aid in London in 1985. I’ve only missed ONE tour since!

' src=

Will the setlist be the same as the previous Moving On tour that the orchestras also played with them?

Will Won’t Get Fooled Again remain acoustic or be back electric?

' src=

Will there be an opening band in Austin? Asking because my plane arrives at 6:55pm and concert is at 7:30pm so will be rushing from the airport. Thanks and CANNOT WAIT!!

' src=

I’m trying to buy tickets through Ticketmaster. The only delivery option is mobile / e-tickets. How can I buy REAL hard copy tickets? (I can’t stand “e-tickets.”)

Michael, ask Ticketmaster if they can do that for you.

' src=

Purchased tickets yesterday for Columbus. Remember taping radio concerts of the Who on my Nakamichi tape deck back in the early eighties. Never had the opportunity to experience live. Very much looking forward to the show! Thanks for coming to C-Bus!!!

' src=

I have seen your band twice. Charlotte, NC. The last time was August Jam in Charlotte. Crazy 3-day concert. Please place a venue in North or South. Carolina.

' src=

Can we expect a tour in Europe, too?

Please come to Mexico!!!

' src=

No Nashvegas this year??

' src=

Looking forward to the 40th anniversary of the farewell tour!!!

Cant wait for you in Memphis! Never have seen The Who in concert and this 57year old veteran is EXCITED!!!

' src=

Seeing the Who was a must for my wife Gloria and me.For me it started in ’71.I married Gloria in ’78 and from her first time seeing them she was like”now I get it!” Gloria past away last August. We had taken our daughter Tricia before, this time I’m adding her daughter Chance to the mix.Rock on,Bill Conwell

' src=

Thanks for coming to boston!

' src=

We love THE WHO–love hockey–and, are a longtime Capital One Cardholders. But, please, in support of the Ukranian people, don’t play Capital One Arena–because Capital One Arena forbids flags, banners, or signs supporting Ukraine (a number of their Russian players and their wives have actively supported Putin and his “WAR”). Better yet, play the venue–fly the Ukrainian flag–and make a statement. Musicians can make a difference–remember South Africa. P.S.: here in Detroit we haven’t forgotten what you did for Gleaners Food Bank–thank You.

' src=

Is this concert going to be any different from the moving on tour?

' src=

Come to Nashville

' src=

No worries about Mexico. They will be coming to the US real soon.

Why are you performing at venues with vax mandates? Half of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania only had one dose. Your fans!

So sorry to miss your tour for the first time.🌺

' src=

Any dates for Montreal Canada

' src=

No Bay Area concerts. San Francisco, San Jose and Oakland is a huge metro area with a lot of people. It’s hard to believe you won’t come play for us. 🙁

' src=

Going to opening night tomorrow at the Hard Rock in Hollywood! Will there be an opening act?

Yes, the opening act is Leslie Mendelson.

' src=

I wish Pete was writing some new songs, especially now that Roger’s voice is different than it was 50 years ago. I hope that there is some new material.

' src=

No performance in Cleveland, home of the Rock n Roll Hall of fame, but two others in Ohio that are 2-5 hours away. Have some respect for the Rock Hall. The Who and the Rock Hall are a perfect match. Imagine the marketing and publicity. Do the event planners have any creativity?

' src=

Who’s the opening act in Tampa?

Leslie Mendelson opens for us in Tampa.

' src=

Who opens for you in Dallas this week?

Los Lonely Boys

Do you have an opening act in Dallas this week?

Hi Brandon, our special guests for all shows can be found here https://www.thewho.com/the-who-announce-special-guests-for-their-2022-north-american-tour/

' src=

Is there an opening act in Austin? What are the Set times?

' src=

Awesome concert at the Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion in the Woodlands outside Houston, TX. Although Pete (“Don’t call me Peter”)was a tad under the weather with his voice, Roger absolutely nailed it tonight.

Having been at the aborted Houston concert back in 2019 when Roger had his attack of good old Texas hay fever, it has been my mission for the last two and a half years to see these guys again. Even had plans to see them in Manchester UK (needless to say, COVID stopped that adventure).

For a pair of old farts, they can still ROCK! And, the supporting members ain’t too shabby either.

Thanks Roger and Pete – 47 years after first seeing The Who, you guys still have it!

' src=

Who opens tonight in Memphis?

' src=

Is there an opening act for the concert in Philly on 20 May? If so, who?

Hi Jack, it’s Amythyst Kiah.

' src=

Who is opening up for you guys? Especially on May 20th in Philly?

' src=

For those who can read, 4 OCTOBER LITTLE CAESARS ARENA, DETROIT, MI

' src=

Just finished seeing Boston, Philadelphia and 2 New York shows. That makes 76 group and solo shows in my 55 years as a Who fan. Awesome as always. Still the greatest and always will be. LONG LIVE THE WHO!!!

Saw Boston,Philadelphia and both New York shows.Have seen 76 group and solo shows in 52 years.Still the greatest.LONG LIVE THE WHO!!!

' src=

Saw The Who at Bethel Woods! They were there 53 years ago! They sounded so GREAT!

' src=

I remember when my friends used to see you all at the Railway Hotel when you were the High Numbers – our favourite band and great memories. Living in US now 👍 would love to see you perform at Anaheim and reminisce 😀

Roger: did you work for Mr. Whale at the sheet metal company in Southall? His daughter and I are still best friends

Correction to my last message from Jill – Mr. Whale’s sheet metal company was in Southall. Was that where you worked? Did you ever go to Hammersmith Palais or Guy Haywards? We used to see the Animals at the Oldfield Hotel in Greenford, also Rod Stewart at Wembley Town Hall and Georgie Fame at the Flamingo in Wardour Street

' src=

I just turned 60 years young and my youngest son of 25 decided to take his dad to see a band I have not seen since 1979 here in Detroit. My son and I both are disabled veterans and it takes us time to prepare for a lot of walking and stair climbing together but we manage without complaint. I really was not expecting what I witnessed considering Daltry is 78 and Townshend 77. However to my astonishment they both as we say here in Detroit “KILLED IT” These multi talented gents and their colleagues of 22 people that I could count on the stage at one time Rocked Detroit and then thanked the audience for purchasing tickets for a show during g the week, drove in hectic traffic, paid high parking fees, walked at least a mile to come out to see them preform. I have seen more than 300 concerts in 5 counties and worked as an usher in the late 70’s and early 80’s but that is something I have never ever heard a performer say. To show gratitude in your fans is one thing but to clarify your understanding of how difficult things have been in and around our country here in the states was nothing short of empathy consideration and respect. I wish all of you who preformed tonight continued success and healthy happy lives as many members of the band will have continued bright futures as well. Thank you for a wonderful evening of solid rock music entertainment.

' src=

Very disappointed there is no stop planned for San Diego. It’s the 2nd largest city in California and there are many fans who would love a chance to see the Who.

' src=

Child,I was at your concert in La Courneuve in 1972 (200 000 people)…fantastic ! I am very sad that your long and exceptional version of My generation/Join together in Paris june 1979 was never edited…I have conserved it with a pirate record.Paris 1997 (two days at the Zenith for Quadrophenia tour) 2007 and 2013 (Bercy) exceptional…From France.

' src=

This is an excellent show. I am very appreciative that I was able to attend this excellent show. And the orchestra accompaniment, with the band’s excellent performances was amazing!

' src=

Saw you November 4, 2022 at Dolby Live in Las Vegas. I expected it to be a good show, but it was far beyond good. It was phenomenal. I’d love to buy a video of your tour performance if you decide to produce one. Also, one last note. I loved the opening act, the Wild Things. A truly memorable evening.

Amazing show ;) very nice !!

May be a bit too short. But I guess it because of the venue.

And the venue was awesome too.

I recommend it to everyone who like this artist.

FRENCH 79 is coming to the USA!

FRENCH 79 is coming to the USA!

After his instant-classic debut album  Olympic  in 2017, featuring the singles  Between the Buttons , a contemplative and cinematic gem, and the uplifting pop anthem  Diamond Veins , Marseille based genius Simon Henner became the savior of electronic French music. Following the paths of Erik Satie, Jean Michel Jarre and Daft Punk, FRENCH 79 isn’t only a synth master with a unique sonic arpeggiator signature. He’s also a songwriter and performer, who sometimes even takes the microphone to sing his soul out, like on  Hometown,  the hit from his second album the mind blowing album  Joshua . A true artist crafting songs that people love around the world, whether it’s peak time in a club or a lazy Sunday afternoon.

His music is a multi layered experience of harmonies and melodies:  “When I was a teenager I discovered the power of music, the way it makes you enter another world, far from reality. As and adult, I wanted to pay tribute to the era I shaped myself in – the ’80s and ’90s”.

French 79 is also a an amazing producer, everyone knows Kid Francescoli’s  Moon  hit now certified diamond. Everything he touches turns into art. Even his lifestyle, leaving part time on his boat is a statement of freedom:  “I need escape to be able to create. A two or three-day sailing trip gives me enough inspiration to lock myself in the studio for a week when I’m back on dry land. I need to feel emotions in my life to inject them in my music and connect with the audience, it’s a whole journey we’re all part of”

Listening to French 79’s music means asking party in a super epic odyssey, a majestic journey in search of hedonism, combined with introspection: pressing play to  Code Zero  or  Hold On  is the best way to feel alive.

Catch him live during his current world tour (including USA in May 2022):  https://french79music. com

After 'out of body' performance Saturday at Valspar, Justin Thomas gets back to work

Change Text Size

PALM HARBOR, Fla. – How was Justin Thomas’ Saturday afternoon? Well, he tumbled from a tie for first place after an opening birdie at the Valspar Championship all the way to a tie for 66th. It was rough. Thomas’ 8-over 79 was one of his worst rounds as a pro and included 38 putts. When asked if the day felt like an out-of-body experience, he affirmed

No wonder his dad and teacher, Mike Thomas, chose to phone him afterward.

“He was worried, like, is everything OK?” Thomas said Sunday. “And it was. It was just weird. The first time that I hit a shot that wasn’t out of the dead center of the face (Saturday) was my tee shot on (hole) 9. I hit a lot of really, really quality shots to shoot that bad of a score.”

Thomas, 30, rebounded on Sunday with a round of 71, meaning he had played the first, second and fourth rounds at the Copperhead Course in 5-under. He used Sunday to get in a few reps with a new Titleist 2-wood he wanted to try – it’s the same length as his 3-wood, but has a slightly bigger head and only 13 degrees of loft – and a longer-length driver that can give him extra yards at some venues, mainly Augusta National Golf Club. He will enjoy two weeks off before heading to the Masters.

Justin Thomas' bunker play leads to birdie at Valspar

“I had kind of planned on trying it (the 2-wood) this weekend,” said Thomas, a 15-time PGA TOUR winner including two major titles. “Being one back (starting Saturday), I didn’t think it was the time. So today was the day to kind of give it a go and try it in competition, to try to hit some good shots and make some birdies.”

Thomas made two birdies and two bogeys in the final round. He missed nine greens, but scrambled effectively, getting up-and-down seven times. As was the case on Thursday and Friday, he finished with 27 putts.

He knows how the putting numbers from Valspar will read – on Saturday, he lost 7.02 strokes to the field on the greens, and lost nearly five strokes on the week. Through seven starts in 2024 – two of his early starts where he finished highly (T3 and T6) did not track putting stats – Thomas ranked 149th in Strokes Gained: Putting.

He said there is no reason to panic about the status of his putting with the season’s first major, the Masters, three weeks away.

“At the end of the day, at some point, (saying) ‘hitting good putts’ … I mean, they need to go in,” Thomas said. “But I did feel I putted well at Bay Hill, and here for the first two days (68-69). My speed was off this week, and I couldn’t quite get the ball to the hole.

“My putter didn’t feel that bad in my hands. I’ve had plenty of bad putting days where I feel I can’t get it in the hole, and yesterday was not one of them. I burned a lot of edges on the holes that I missed, and just didn’t miss a lot of short putts. It truly was one of those ‘golf’ days. It sucked. The timing was bad, but a lot better this week than in a couple of weeks.”

Sam Ryder found himself in a similar predicament early Sunday after shooting himself out of any chance of contending with a third-round 78. He said he could have moped after the round Saturday afternoon, but instead he went to the practice tee and got in a good session with his coach, Adam Schriber.

Sam Ryder makes 20-foot birdie at Valspar

One day later, Ryder enjoyed a three-birdie run not once, but twice, including a birdie-birdie-birdie finish at the closing “Snake Pit.” He shot 6-under 65 to make a nice run up the board.

The strange part of Ryder’s finish? He didn’t have a 7-iron in his bag on Sunday. The club snapped when his follow-through on the 14th on Saturday caught a tree, and he didn’t replace the club for the final round.

On his first two par-3 holes on Sunday, Ryder reached for the 7-iron and it wasn’t there. He bogeyed both. He might have hit 7-iron on his final approach, too, sitting 155 yards, down the hill, to the flag at 18. But he muscled an 8-iron to 9 feet to set up his eighth birdie of the round.

“On 16, my caddie said, ‘Let’s turkey out (meaning, birdie his last three)’” and we did,” Ryder said. “It will definitely make my lunch, and my drive (home), a little better.”

The first round has already brought a big upset and plenty of thrills.

womens-bracket-second-round.jpg

The NCAA Women's Tournament is off and running. The first round did not provide a ton of drama, but the rest of the tournament should be filled with it.

That proved to be the case on Sunday with the first top seed going down in the form of No. 2 seed Ohio State. The Buckeyes surrendered a big lead to No. 7 seed Duke as the Blue Devils managed to make the Sweet 16 for the first time since 2018. Plus, No. 2 seed Stanford and No. 7 seed Iowa State played the game of the tournament so far as the two teams went shot for shot down the stretch before the Cardinal were able to come out on top in overtime.

Eight more teams will look to punch their ticket to the Sweet 16 on Monday as the tournament begins to reach its apex.

Below you will find a viewable/printable 2024 NCAA Women's Tournament bracket. Thanks for stopping by, but don't forget to continue to checking in throughout the next three weeks. Stefano Loi

This comprehensive tour history is brought to you by the imotorhead team and the dedicated work of Stefano Loi, who has spent years researching and compiling this definitive list of Motörheads touring history.

We are looking for show reviews, set list information, pictures, scaned ticket stubs, audio and video recordings (via YouTube). Anything you might want to add to this section, please send to [email protected] with the subject “tours”.

From Stefano:

"I've heard Motörhead the first time in 1985 and I begun to compile the past tour dates in 1988 because I felt I was confined in my beloved island of Sardinia and I was dreaming to see Motörhead on stage back then. Yes, it was difficult to travel until the end of the nineties and I was somehow forced to extreme long overnight trips by boat and train to see Motörhead.

In 1999 the list was published for the first time on this website and now we are back after many years offline. Anyway, in the previous years I received thousand of e-mails from every corner of the globe, literally. I learned never to complain about not seeing the band enough because I was lucky, like many of you readers. Many huge Motörhead fans in the world never had the chance to see them. For second, I realized how popular Lemmy was and still is, he had the chance to communicate with music and lyrics to so many fans all over the world, no matter what the culture is.

PS: Thank you for all those unforgettable days, Lemmy, especially when you sung in my car! Please come back, we miss you! :-D"

Virginia Democrats launch their own budget tour to push back on Youngkin’s criticisms

RICHMOND, Va. (AP) — Top Democratic Virginia legislators on Monday held the first in a planned series of public appearances designed to tout their budget legislation, offering counterprogramming to the broadsides Republican Gov. Glenn Youngkin has been lobbing at the spending plan.

Democrats, who have rejected Youngkin’s call to start immediate negotiations with him over their points of disagreement, instead urged him to reconsider his opposition to their proposals. The Democratic-led General Assembly passed the two-year spending plan earlier this month with some Republican support and will next meet in Richmond for a one-day session in April.

“The governor simply needs to sign the budget and stop threatening an unprecedented budget veto. We have done our job. It is now time for him to do his,” Sen. Mamie Locke of Hampton said at the event Monday morning in a Portsmouth storefront, where she and other lawmakers squeezed into a small space before news cameras.

Lawmakers also struck a pessimistic tone on the path forward for a proposed pro-sports arena in northern Virginia and offered a sharp rebuke of Youngkin’s general approach to working with the Assembly.

“He is not very smart when it comes to politics. He thinks that he is the boss of all of us,” said Sen. L. Louise Lucas of Portsmouth, who leads the Senate’s budget writing committee. Lucas has used the power of that role to block standalone legislation related to the Alexandria arena deal and keep it out of the budget bill.

Youngkin has been holding public appearances around the state to object to the budget that passed. He has criticized its inclusion of what his administration says are $2.6 billion in tax hikes in the form of an expansion of the sales tax to cover digital goods and a push to renew Virginia’s participation in a carbon cap-and-trade plan. He’s said he hopes to avoid vetoing the bill, which would give pay raises to teachers and public workers and boost public education spending. But he has also said unequivocally that he won’t sign a budget that raises taxes.

When the lawmakers were asked whether they were willing to move on from the proposed digital sales tax, they reiterated that Youngkin himself had first raised the idea — though he also coupled it with a proposed cut to the income tax rate that would result in overall cuts.

Youngkin recently floated an unusual path forward, saying lawmakers should sit down with him now, ahead of the April 17 reconvened session when they will meet in Richmond to consider his proposed amendments to legislation, including the budget, which would kick in July 1. The governor suggested if they reached a compromise, he could submit it through amendments for a vote then.

In a letter to Youngkin last week, legislators rejected that proposal. In an interview, Senate Majority Leader Scott Surovell — who was traveling and did not join in Monday’s event — said that with that suggestion, Youngkin was trying “expand his role and power in the process by demanding a negotiation.”

Youngkin told reporters Monday at an unrelated bill signing he would “continue to reach out and see if we can find a way to land this budget.”

Aubrey Layne, who served as secretary of finance under previous Democratic Gov. Ralph Northam and also advised Youngkin early in his administration, cautioned in an interview Monday that any heated rhetoric around the subject of the budget could eventually have negative implications for the state’s prized AAA credit rating.

“Governance is a big part of our AAA credit rating, and negative public comments, whether it be about economic development deals or the budget does not help the credibility of the commonwealth,” he said.

Lawmakers also had critical or noncommital remarks when asked about Youngkin’s proposed $2 billion development district with a new arena intended to lure the NBA’s Washington Wizards and the NHL’s Washington Capitals to Alexandria.

House Speaker Don Scott joked that he needed to leave when the question came up.

Lucas, who’s been a leading critic of the plan, insisted that it’s dead, as she’s said before.

“At this point ... if the conversation is going to continue to be, ‘We have to use taxpayer-financed debt, and it’s going to be in Alexandria,’ the conversation’s a complete waste of time,” Surovell said.

Youngkin continued to insist “there is a way forward” though he voiced concern about potentially losing the teams to the District of Columbia, which has offered $500 million to revamp the facility where the teams currently play, or to Maryland .

“It’s our opportunity to take, and I would encourage us to take it. And I’m hopeful that we can, although the clock is ticking and we need to get some work done,” he said.

Legislators will continue their “Virginia Families First” press tour around the state this week with stops in Richmond, northern Virginia and southwest Virginia.

Finley reported from Portsmouth.
