Cruise Ship Room Service: Menus and Fees for Cruise Lines

J. Souza

Nothing says “I’m in vacation mode” quite like ordering room service on a cruise ship.

In this article we will see what you can get delivered to your stateroom and how much cruise lines are charging for those wonderful treats sent right to your cabin .

norwegian escape balcony with room service breakfast at sunrise

I remember the days when room service was free on every cruise line and the choices were practically limitless.

But rather than dwell on the glory days of endless food being carted to your cruise cabin, I thought we’d take a look at cruise ship room service today and how each line compares.

We will look at all the mainstream cruise lines like Carnival and Royal Caribbean, in addition to premium cruise lines and even luxury lines.

How much does each cruise line charge for room service? What does the menu look like? And what can you still get for free?

We’ll compare some of the major cruise lines and so you can see the difference in room service policies between these companies. Many of these room service policies have changed in the last few months by the way. So if it’s been a while since you’ve gone on a cruise, you might be in for a surprise.

Be mindful that these menus and charges for room service are subject to change, and while we will try to keep this post up to date, you can check directly with the cruise line for any updates for your cruise.

Carnival Cruise Line Room Service

room service for carnival stateroom

Carnival offers 24-hour room service with a breakfast menu and an all-day menu. While the continental breakfast is free, other room service items have an individual charge depending on what you order.

Breakfast :

The breakfast menu does include a continental breakfast that is free of charge, but it’s only available from 6am to 10am.

The free continental breakfast includes fruit, cereal, danishes, toast, bagels, muffins, croissants, and a selection of yogurts, including banana strawberry, raspberry, and plain.

There are also some drinks included like coffee, orange juice, apple juice, tomato juice, grapefruit juice, hot tea, milk, and chocolate milk.

There are no delivery charges but I do recommend tipping the room service attendant.

Check out our article on why I bring cash to a cruise to see more about tipping.

But what if you want a hot breakfast delivered to your door? For that you will have to pay extra but only $5 or $6.

On Carnival’s current room service breakfast menu are items like English muffin sandwiches with bacon and a fried egg, chicken and cheese in a sourdough sandwich, and a bagel with smoked salmon and cream cheese.

An 18% service charge is added to your bill for any of these breakfast sandwiches.

All-Day Menu :

The all-day menu is called leisure dining and is offered from 10am to 6am, basically any time outside of breakfast hours.

From sandwiches, salads, pizzas, and wings, the options are all priced individually ranging from a $3 order of fries to an $8 Spicy Fried Firecracker Shrimp plate .

Some of the dessert offerings are New York cheesecake, devils food chocolate cake, and a giant cookie.

The $7 wings and $6 quesadilla are some of my favorite choices, but keep in mind that all of these also come with an 18% service charge.

And while you can get coffee or juice for free at the buffet you will have to pay $2 or $3 to have it delivered to your stateroom. But you can get a whole pot of coffee delivered to your room for $3.

Royal Caribbean Room Service

royal caribbean room service

Royal Caribbean International cruise ships also offer free room service but only for the continental breakfast. The line takes a different approach to room service fees than Carnival and simply charges a $7.95 “convenience fee” for each delivery.

Any guests in the Grand Suites or higher categories will not have to pay the room service charge.

Breakfast is served from 6m to 10am, and the complimentary continental breakfast includes toast, bagels, English muffins, donuts, baked pastries, cereals, fruit and yogurt.

The hot breakfast comes with the $7.95 charge and includes eggs cooked in a variety of ways (including omelettes), pancakes, hash browns, bacon, and sausage.

For times outside of breakfast Royal Caribbean has a nice assortment of pasta, burgers, salads, wings, and pizza.

This can be ordered between 11am and 6am and an 18% gratuity will be added to your bill.

Appetizers on the Royal Caribbean room service menu include chicken noodle soup, Cobb salad, Ceasar salad and chicken tenders.

The favorites section has some popular items cruisers love like Rigatoni Bolognese, Grilled Salmon, Grilled Quesadilla, pizza, and wings.

All of the sandwiches you can have delivered come with fries, and these include the Royal Burger, Grilled Cheese, a Hot Dog Your Way, and even a Classic Philly Cheesesteak.

Also, Royal Caribbean has a kid’s section on the menu as well.

Norwegian Cruise Line Room Service

Norwegian Escape balcony with room service breakfast on tray with sunrise

Norwegian offers 24-hour room service and has recently added some changes to its room service fees. NCL has begun adding a $4.95 service fee for what was a free continental breakfast option before.

The continental breakfast includes the same kind of items on other lines like fruit, pastries, cereal, and yogurt. Breakfast can be per-ordered by filling out a door hanger which also allows passengers to specify a preferred time for their breakfast to be delivered. This door-hanger must be placed outside your cabin by 4am the previous day.

Some of the breakfast offerings by Norwegian include omelettes, steak & eggs, avocado toast, french toast and breakfast smoothies.

Norwegian has claimed to have expanded the options available on the room service menu including breakfast offerings, but a $9.95 convenience charge will be added to each order in addition to a 20% gratuity service charge. Only the continental breakfast will be exempt, although guests will still have to pay the $4.95 service fee. There are some reports that this is not fleet wide yet, so keep an eye out for news related to Norwegian room service.

Guests in the Haven will not have to pay the $9.95 charge.

The all-day menu will include items like chicken noodle soup, Caesar salad, Cobb salad, a cheese plates, BLTs, all kinds of sub sandwiches, and hot dogs.

Some entrees you can order to your room include Spaghetti Bolognase, Half Roasted Chicken, Skirt Steak, Grilled Salmon, Fish & Chips, and pizza.

For special occasions you can order a jumbo shrimp platter for $35 or even a selection of international cheeses with bread, walnuts and grapes for $32.

MSC Cruises Room Service

MSC Cruises room service pizza on a plate

Room service with MSC comes with a $4.99 charge per delivery for those with the lowest “experience” chosen, the Bella Experience. With the Fantastica Experience breakfast is delivered for free, and with the Aurea Experience there is free delivery 24-hours a day.

Besides this delivery fee there is the cost of the options in the menu, and the room service menu has both free and paid options.

Some of the room service selections with MSC include garden vegetable soup, a variety of cheeses, Mediterranean salad, Caesar salad, veggie wraps, smoked salmon sandwich, a fruit plate, and even a fruit basket just to name a few.

The Italian cruise line promises to have a fresh-baked pizza delivered to your cabin within 20 minutes of ordering. This can cost around $11 or $12 depending on what kind of pizza you get.

And when it comes to pizza, MSC has a myriad of choices. You can get everything from Mariana and Toscana to Calabrese and 4 Formaggi. Even a Calzone Napoletano was available last time I checked.

If you’re in the MSC Yacht Club you will not have to worry about any room service fees as the service is complimentary as well.

Princess Cruises Room Service

room service on princess cruises

Princess has 24-hour room service offered to all its guests. Breakfast is from 6:30am to 10:30am, you can get pizza from 5:30 to 9:30pm and the specialty dining menu is from 5:30pm to 9:30pm.

For the most part room service is free, but there are some items that will cost extra if you want to ramp up your cruise vacation experience.

You can actually order a selection of dishes to your room that are from the specialty restaurants on board. From appetizers to main entrees these fees can range from $5 to $20.

This allows you to have Filet Mignon, Rib-eye steak and Jumbo Prawn delivered from Crown Grill for about $19 each.

Even pasta dishes from Sabatini’s can be delivered through room service, and you can select from the many desserts as well.

Using the app or stateroom TV allows you to sort through the many choices you have, and you can see all the up to date prices there, as they may change by the time you go on your cruise.

Some of the categories of food you will find in the app are appetizers & snacks, hot food, sandwiches, sides, sweets, kids, pizza, and specialty dining.

To have a shrimp cocktail delivered to your room will cost $8.

Celebrity Cruises Room Service

Celebrity cruises balcony room service

At the end of 2022, Celebrity made a major policy change in regards to room service. Each delivery now costs $9.95 with an additional 18% gratuity charge on top of it. (So basically $11.74 for every room service order)

Prior to this change room service was free and cruisers were only charged $4.95 when ordering after 11 p.m.

In keeping in line with some of the mainstream lines, however, a continental breakfast is still free between 6am and 11am.

Additionally, Zenith-level members and suite guests will still be able to get food delivered for free.

Passengers staying in the retreat will get free room service for breakfast, lunch, and dinner.

Holland America Room Service

pizza on a plate on Eurodam Holland America

This is one of the last premium/mainstream cruise lines that still offers free room service. Only a few select items cost extra.

Breakfast is available from 6am to 11am and there’s more than just the continental breakfast that is complimentary.

Besides the usual cereal, fruit, pastries and yogurt, Holland America guests can have eggs, hash browns, bacon and sausage sent to their staterooms for free.

If you do want to splurge for breakfast there is a Lobster Benedict for $12.50, a Steak and Eggs breakfast for $15, and breakfast smoothies for $4.95.

The All Day menu offered by Holland America is loaded with starters, sandwiches, entrees and sweets.

There’s also a kid’s menu available for room service that is available from 5:30pm until 9:30pm.  This menu for children includes quesadillas, fruit, salad, mac and cheese, spaghetti, hot dogs and even peanut butter and jelly sandwiches.

FAQ on cruise ship room service

Did carnival get rid of free room service.

Yes and no.  Carnival still offers free room service, but it’s only for the continental breakfast.  The rest of the menu is more à la carte and each item has a cost from $3 to $8.  This is in addition to the 18% service fee.

Does Royal Caribbean charge for room service?

Yes, but just like mentioned above, Royal Caribbean still offers breakfast room service for free if it’s a continental breakfast.  There is a standard $7.95 charge and additional fee of 18% for gratuities.

How much is room service on Norwegian?

Norwegian still does offer room service but you can’t get it for free any more.  Even the continental breakfast comes with a $4.95 service fee and the other select menu items will cost $9.95 plus a 20% gratuity charge.

Can I order room service any time of day?

Pretty much.  But the menu may be different depending on what time of day you decide to order.  Most cruise lines have 24-hour room service and breakfast is not offered until around 6am the next morning.  So for late-night snacks, room service is still the way to go.

How do I order room service on a cruise ship?

Each cruise line is different but most these days have an app that is the easiest way to order room service.  This will also allow you to see the complete menu and if there is any extra cost per item.  Some lines also let you order room service through the stateroom TV.  For breakfast many cruise lines provide door-hangers that you can fill out and place outside your stateroom before 4am each night.

How much should you tip for room service on a cruise ship?

It’s all up to you but I like to tip about $2 – $3 per item, depending on how large the order is.  This is also why I like to have some small bills in cash on me when I cruise.  If you order a lot of room service go ahead and let the delivery attendant know how much you appreciate their service.

Keep in mind that this also depends on which cruise you are sailing, as some luxury lines may include all gratuities.

Which cruise lines offer free room service?

Disney Cruise Line and Holland America Line are some of the only mainstream lines where room service is available for free.  And of course luxury lines that are all-inclusive also provide the service at no additional cost.  But even then, there may be some menu items that incur a cost.

The Formation and Essence of Authentic Emeralds

An image showcasing the mesmerizing journey of an emerald's formation

As I delve into the enchanting world of emeralds, I find myself mesmerized by their beginnings and allure.

These precious gemstones are born deep within the Colombian mountains, where rare elements and geological forces collide. The intense heat and pressure create magnificent crystals that slowly cool over time.

To determine their authenticity, one must examine their flaws, as even the slightest imperfections do not diminish their value.

The vibrant green hues, ranging from subtle to intense, make emeralds highly coveted. Their durability ensures they withstand the test of time, making them a valuable investment.

  • Emeralds are formed deep in the mountains of Colombia through the combination of rare elements brought together by geological forces.
  • Flaws in color or shape indicate the authenticity of emeralds, and slight imperfections do not reduce their value.
  • The intense green color of emeralds, especially grass-green, is considered the most valuable, and personal preference plays a role in selecting the green color of an emerald.
  • Emeralds are durable gemstones, resisting abrasion and scratches over time, making them suitable for long-lasting jewelry.

Geological Forces and Rare Elements

I learned that emeralds form deep in the mountains of Colombia, where rare elements like beryllium and chromium are brought together by geological forces. These forces create the perfect conditions for the formation of emeralds, with high temperatures and pressures needed for their growth.

The mining techniques used to extract emeralds from these mountains are precise and require skilled workers. Emerald mining is a significant part of Colombian culture, as emeralds hold great value and are often used in traditional jewelry and artifacts. They are considered a symbol of wealth and prestige.

The beauty and rarity of emeralds have made them highly sought after worldwide. Colombian emeralds are known for their exceptional quality and vibrant green color, making them truly unique and treasured gems.

Formation Process of Emeralds

The combination of rare elements and geological forces deep in the mountains of Colombia brings about the formation of emeralds. These precious gemstones are highly valued for their vibrant green color and durability.

When it comes to mining emeralds, various techniques are employed to extract the gemstones from the earth. This includes both traditional methods, such as hand tools and manual labor, as well as more modern techniques, such as mechanized mining and underground tunnels.

However, the environmental impact of emerald mining cannot be ignored. The process of extracting these gemstones can lead to deforestation, soil erosion, and water pollution. It is crucial for mining companies to implement sustainable practices and minimize their impact on the environment.

Additionally, efforts must be made to rehabilitate and restore the areas affected by mining activities to ensure the long-term preservation of these valuable natural resources.

Indicators of Authenticity

Color and shape flaws in emeralds indicate their authenticity and do not diminish their value. When it comes to emeralds, it’s important to understand how to distinguish between genuine stones and imitations. Here are some methods of emerald testing to help you make an informed decision:

Visual Inspection: Examine the color and clarity of the stone. Genuine emeralds typically have a deep, rich green color with slight imperfections.

Refractive Index: Use a refractometer to measure the refractive index of the stone. Authentic emeralds have a specific range of refractive index values.

Magnification: Inspect the stone under a microscope to identify natural inclusions and flaws. Synthetic emeralds often lack these natural imperfections.

UV Testing: Shine ultraviolet light on the stone to see if it exhibits the characteristic red fluorescence of genuine emeralds.

The Value of Brilliance and Intense Green Color

When shopping for emeralds, it’s important to consider the value of brilliance and an intense green color. The shine and identity of emeralds are significant factors in determining their worth. Personal preference also plays a role in selecting the color of an emerald. Emeralds have a unique green color that can vary from stone to stone. To give you a better understanding, here is a table that illustrates the different shades of green:

The intensity and hue of the green color can greatly affect the shine and identity of the emerald. Ultimately, it is up to personal preference to choose the perfect green color that speaks to you.

Unique Green Color Variation

I personally find it fascinating how emeralds can have such a wide range of green shades.

The green color grading of emeralds is a complex process that involves evaluating the intensity and hue of the stone’s green color. Factors affecting color intensity include the presence of impurities and the amount of chromium and vanadium in the crystal lattice structure of the emerald.

Impurities can create a yellowish or bluish tint, while higher levels of chromium and vanadium result in a more intense green color. Light and dark tones can also affect the overall appearance of the stone.

Gemologists use specialized tools and techniques to grade emeralds based on their green color, ensuring that each stone meets the highest standards of quality and beauty.

Durability and Longevity

Emeralds are known for their durability and ability to withstand abrasion and environmental factors, making them a long-lasting investment. When considering the durability of emeralds, it is important to understand the difference between durability and hardness.

While emeralds may not be as hard as diamonds, they are still substantial gemstones that resist scratches and abrasion over time. Environmental factors such as dirt and sand do not easily damage emeralds, further enhancing their longevity.

This durability ensures that emeralds can be worn and enjoyed for years to come without losing their beauty or value. So, when investing in emeralds, you can have peace of mind knowing that they will remain stunning and resilient, even in the face of everyday wear and tear.

Emeralds as the Perfect Gift Choice

Choosing an emerald as a gift is an excellent choice because of its unique green color and durability. Emeralds are not only stunning gemstones but also hold historical significance. They have been revered for centuries and are considered birthstone options for the month of May.

The historical significance of emeralds can be traced back to ancient civilizations, where they were believed to possess healing powers and bring good fortune. In addition, emeralds have been cherished by royalty and nobility throughout history. They have adorned the crowns and jewelry of kings and queens, symbolizing wealth and power.

Today, emeralds continue to be highly prized and are sought after by collectors and jewelry enthusiasts alike. When choosing an emerald as a gift, you are not only selecting a beautiful gemstone but also a piece of history and tradition.

How Do Geological Forces and Rare Elements Contribute to the Formation of Emeralds?

Geological forces and rare elements combine to form emeralds deep in the mountains of Colombia. These forces bring together beryllium and chromium, creating the perfect conditions of high temperature and pressure for the formation of these precious gemstones.

What Is the Specific Process by Which Emeralds Are Formed Under High Temperature and Pressure Conditions?

The formation process of emeralds is like a slow-cooking recipe. Under high temperature and pressure conditions, rare elements like beryllium and chromium combine, resulting in the growth of large crystals with intense green color.

How Can One Determine the Authenticity of an Emerald Based on Its Flaws in Color or Shape?

Determining authenticity of an emerald is based on flaws in color or shape. Imperfections do not devalue the stone. Expertise is necessary for accurate evaluation and comparing emeralds.

Why Do Emeralds With Slight Imperfections Still Hold Value in the Market?

Emeralds with slight imperfections still hold value in the market because they exhibit authenticity and uniqueness. Market demand for imperfect emeralds is driven by their rarity and the belief that flaws add character and individuality to the stone.

What Factors Contribute to the High Value of Emeralds, Such as Brilliance and Intense Green Color?

Brilliance and intensity, along with rarity and demand, contribute to the high value of emeralds. These stunning gemstones captivate with their vibrant green color and dazzling sparkle, making them highly sought after in the market.

Versatile Dutch Oven Desserts for Anywhere

An image showcasing a steaming Dutch oven filled with mouthwatering apple crisp, its golden crumbly topping perfectly caramelized, surrounded by a rustic campfire setting with flickering flames and cozy camping gear

I’ve always held the conviction that the best desserts are those that can be made anywhere. This is why I am excited to present you with these versatile Dutch oven dessert recipes.

From Death by Chocolate to Fruit Cobbler and Orange-Scented Cake, these desserts are not only delicious but also easy to make.

Whether you’re camping or simply want to try something new in your kitchen, these desserts are sure to satisfy your sweet tooth.

So grab your Dutch oven and get ready to indulge in these mouthwatering treats!

  • Dutch oven desserts are versatile and can be cooked over coals or in a traditional oven.
  • It is important to prepare the Dutch oven by lining it with aluminum foil, using a liner, or greasing it.
  • Death by Chocolate and Fruit Cobbler are two popular Dutch oven dessert options.
  • Dutch oven desserts can be customized and made with a variety of ingredients like fruit, oranges, or bananas.

Death by Chocolate: a Decadent Dessert for Any Occasion

I love making Death by Chocolate in my Dutch oven because it’s the perfect indulgent treat for any occasion. This decadent chocolate dessert combines rich cocoa powder, brown sugar, and mini marshmallows to create a gooey, fudgy base.

I then pour a luscious chocolate cake mix over the top and sprinkle it with chocolate chips for an extra dose of chocolatey goodness.

One of the best things about this recipe is that you can get creative with fruit combinations. You can add sliced strawberries, raspberries, or even a layer of sliced bananas between the fudgy base and the cake mix.

The result is a heavenly combination of chocolate and fruit that will satisfy any sweet tooth.

Fruit Cobbler: a Versatile and Customizable Treat

Spray the pan with cooking spray or use a liner before layering the frozen fruit at the bottom. Fruit cobbler is a versatile and customizable treat that offers endless possibilities for delicious variations. With a simple base of cake mix and soda, you can create a delightful dessert using your favorite fruits. From classic combinations like peach or cherry to more unique options like mixed berries or tropical fruits, the choice is yours. Get creative with your fruit filling options! To help inspire you, here’s a table showcasing some customizable cobbler variations:

Whether you prefer a crunchy streusel or a sweet cinnamon sugar topping, these customizable cobbler variations are sure to satisfy your dessert cravings. So grab your favorite fruits, whip up a delicious cobbler, and enjoy the fruity goodness!

Orange-Scented Desserts: Sweet and Tangy Delights Using Fresh Oranges

Using fresh oranges, I love creating sweet and tangy orange-scented desserts that are bursting with flavor. There are so many creative ways to use orange zest and juice in your baking. Here are three delightful orange-scented desserts that will satisfy your sweet tooth:

Orange-Scented Cake: Cut the top off oranges and scoop out the insides. Fill the oranges with muffin or cake mix and top with the orange top. Wrap them in foil and bake them to perfection. This dessert is not only healthy but also makes for a delicious breakfast when filled with pancake batter.

Orange-Scented Glazes: Drizzle an orange-scented glaze over your favorite cakes or pastries for an added burst of flavor. Simply combine powdered sugar with orange zest and juice until you achieve a smooth and pourable consistency.

Orange-Scented Frostings: Add a twist to your frostings by incorporating orange zest and juice. Whip together butter, powdered sugar, vanilla extract, and a hint of orange zest and juice until light and fluffy. Spread this luscious frosting over your cakes and cupcakes for a citrusy delight.

With the vibrant aroma and tangy taste of oranges, these orange-scented desserts will surely leave you craving for more.

S’mores-Inspired Desserts: Indulge in the Classic Campfire Treat Without a Fire

To recreate the classic campfire treat without a fire, simply combine sugar, melted butter, egg, and vanilla in a bowl. These ingredients will form the base for your s’mores-inspired dessert.

Now, let’s get creative with some unique twists on this beloved treat. How about trying a s’more bar? Press the mixture into a pan and partially bake it. Then, top it with marshmallows, chocolate chips, and more graham cracker crumbs.

Another option is to make s’more cookies by incorporating the classic flavors into a cookie dough.

You can also make s’more dip by layering melted chocolate and marshmallow fluff in a baking dish, and then serving it with graham crackers for dipping.

The possibilities are endless when it comes to enjoying s’mores without a fire. So go ahead, indulge in this sweet and gooey delight anytime, anywhere.

Baked Banana Desserts: Delicious and Gooey Banana Creations

I love baking banana desserts because they always turn out deliciously gooey and full of flavor.

One of my favorite recipes is for caramelized banana delights. To make these gooey banana treats, I start by melting some butter in a skillet and adding brown sugar and cinnamon. Once the mixture is bubbling and fragrant, I add sliced bananas and cook them until they become caramelized and soft. The aroma that fills the kitchen is absolutely heavenly!

Once the bananas are caramelized, I like to add some toppings like pecans, coconut, or even some pound cake for extra indulgence. I serve these warm over a scoop of ice cream and sprinkle on some additional toppings for a truly decadent dessert. The combination of the caramelized bananas, creamy ice cream, and crunchy toppings is simply irresistible.

These caramelized banana delights are the perfect way to satisfy a sweet tooth and enjoy the natural sweetness of ripe bananas.

No-Bake Cheesecake: Easy and Creamy Dessert That Requires No Oven

No oven is needed to make this easy and creamy no-bake cheesecake. It’s the perfect dessert for those hot summer days when you don’t want to turn on your oven. The best part is, you can get creative with the flavors and toppings to make it your own.

For alternative flavors, you can try adding in some fresh fruit like strawberries or blueberries for a burst of sweetness. You can also experiment with different extracts like almond or coconut to give your cheesecake a unique twist. As for toppings, the possibilities are endless. You can go traditional with a dollop of whipped cream and a sprinkle of chocolate shavings, or get adventurous with crushed cookies, caramel sauce, or even a drizzle of Nutella.

When it comes to presentation, think outside the box. Instead of the usual round cheesecake, try making individual mini cheesecakes in jars or using a muffin tin for bite-sized treats. You can also get creative with the crust by using crushed pretzels or graham crackers for added texture and flavor.

No-bake cheesecake is a versatile dessert that allows you to let your imagination run wild. So go ahead, get creative, and enjoy a delicious and hassle-free treat that will leave everyone asking for seconds.

Cinnamon Apple Crumble: Warm and Comforting Dessert With a Crunchy Topping

Baking up a warm and comforting cinnamon apple crumble is a delightful way to enjoy a crunchy topping on a chilly evening. This classic dessert is a perfect combination of sweet apples, warm spices, and a buttery crumble on top.

While cinnamon apple is a popular flavor, you can also explore alternative fruit options like pear or peach to create a unique twist.

The key to a delicious crumble lies in the creative crumble toppings. You can add chopped nuts, such as walnuts or pecans, for extra crunch. Sprinkling a handful of oats or shredded coconut on top adds texture and flavor.

Don’t forget to drizzle some caramel or maple syrup over the finished crumble for a decadent touch. With its comforting aroma and delightful taste, cinnamon apple crumble is sure to become a favorite dessert for any occasion.

Last updated: August 16th, 2021

Couple relaxing inside stateroom on a cruise

  • Find a Cruise

Picking the best rooms on a cruise ship involves more than just choosing a stateroom category.

When selecting a stateroom, you’ll want to figure out what type of experience and convenience you’d like to have during your cruise vacation. The location of the stateroom on the ship, right down to the deck, can make a big difference in your vacation experience, especially if you know what you want to be close to.

What’s the best room on a cruise for you? Follow these four steps to choose the best rooms on a cruise ship for your desired vacation, ambiance, and overall experience.

Couple sitting on a cruise balcony

Choose a Stateroom Category

First, let’s look at stateroom types and who they’re best for. Whether you’re on a family cruise, a romantic couple’s getaway , or cruising solo, we have a stateroom that’s perfect for you.

Inside Staterooms

Inside Stateroom on Celebrity Edge

Inside staterooms are located on the interior of the ship and don’t have any windows. These are the best rooms on a cruise ship if you’re looking for a lower-cost option or plan to spend the majority of your time on adventurous excursions, relaxing by the pool, or dining in our world-class restaurants at a leisurely pace.

Oceanview Staterooms

Oceanview Stateroom on Celebrity

Oceanview staterooms are ideal if you want to enjoy savings while being able to soak in beautiful ocean views from your room.

Though the windows aren’t as large as staterooms with verandas, these staterooms can still sleep the same number of guests thanks to the spacious bed arrangement (which fits two adults) and the pull-out couch for an additional adult guest.

Veranda Staterooms

Interior of Sunset Veranda on Celebrity

A common sentiment among cruisers is that once you sail in a stateroom with a balcony, it’s hard to ever go back to staying in a stateroom without one.

With a veranda stateroom , you’ll have your own private outdoor space, a quiet haven where you can soak up every precious moment of vacation. Sit out on your veranda and enjoy the sea breeze and port views as you sip your coffee in the morning, or enjoy a glass of wine and sunset views in the evening.

Certain veranda staterooms can be connected, which is a great solution for friends or multi-generational families traveling together who want to have easy access to each other but still have the option of privacy.

On Celebrity Edge and Celebrity Apex, there’s a unique veranda stateroom category: the Infinite Veranda, which blurs the line between indoor and outdoor space by providing a veranda that completely opens to the rest of the room with a touch of a button. It’s especially perfect for guests on a solo cruise .

Concierge-Class Staterooms

Looking for an elevated level of service during your cruise? A Concierge Class stateroom provides you with personalized concierge service during your cruise, afternoon snack deliveries to your stateroom, seating time preferences, and other benefits.

AquaClass® Staterooms

People relaxing inside a spa

For the ultimate rejuvenating vacation experience, book an AquaClass® stateroom . These staterooms are located close to the spa and include spa amenities inside the stateroom.

You’ll also get unlimited access to the Persian Garden and the exclusive onboard specialty restaurant, Blu, which serves spa-inspired cuisine featuring fresh, healthy ingredients. AquaClass® comes with other benefits too, like 10% off any pre-booked salon or spa service and priority spa booking an entire month ahead of other guests. Treat yourself to a massage, a mani/pedi with your best friend or your mom, or a rejuvenating facial for the ultimate in pampering.

If you’re looking for extra space, a suite is one of the best rooms on a cruise ship to book. In suites, you’ll find that the sleeping and living spaces are separated. Some suites even have multiple bedrooms, making them ideal for families or groups of friends.

When it comes to cruise suites, there are a variety of layouts to choose from, like two-level loft suites and Penthouse Suites with grand pianos and hot tubs. Celebrity Edge’s Iconic Suites span a massive 1,291 square feet with an additional 398 square feet of outdoor space.

Staterooms on Celebrity Flora

Every need is taken care of for you thanks to 24-hour room service, laundry service twice during your sailing, and full in-suite dinner service. Plus, the double faucet vanity means no one has to wait to freshen up their makeup or get ready in a hurry.

Elite Ocean View

The Elite Ocean View stateroom features two convertible beds, a balcony facing the sea, and cozy touches to make it feel like home.

Is upgrading to a balcony room worth it?

Balcony on a cruise

Many passengers plan on spending the majority of their cruise outside of their room, whether they’re pumping iron at the gym, relaxing in the spa, or suntanning out on the pool deck. It’s up to you if a balcony feels like an important feature for your stay.

If you enjoy the leisurely routine of sipping your morning coffee on the veranda or want a private space to watch the sunset with your loved one, you might consider upgrading to a stateroom with a veranda.

If you’re cruising to Alaska or another destination that sails through stunning natural landscapes, opting for a veranda stateroom is a great way to witness these sights without having to leave your room.

Choose a Deck

Once you’ve chosen your stateroom category, you can decide what deck you want to stay on. When you book a cruise early, you’ll have a better opportunity to choose what deck of the ship you want to be on.

Chairs on a Celebrity veranda

Some staterooms have larger verandas (typically ones on the bow or aft of the ship ) and some have partially blocked views, which may or may not be a big deal to you.

Foodies may want a stateroom closer to the many incredible dining options onboard. Returning cruisers might have a favorite bar or lounge where they become a regular during their vacation.

If you’re traveling with friends or a group, you’ll want to consider how far apart your staterooms are. Will it be harder to meet up if they’re on the opposite side of the ship? Will you want to be a quick elevator ride or walk away from your fellow travelers? These are all questions to consider when you’re choosing what deck is best for you.

Is it better to be on a higher deck?

Woman sitting by the window on a cruise

Each of the twelve ships in the Celebrity fleet is unique in terms of their deck designs and the way the decks are organized. Some cruisers prefer lower levels as you’re less likely to feel any rocking while the ship is in motion, but that varies from person to person.

You can study your ship’s deck plans to understand how everything is organized before making your choice. Remember—prime locations for specific stateroom categories are reserved fast, which is why it’s ideal to book early if the deck your stateroom is on matters to you.

Choose a Location

Don’t forget to use proper ship lingo when you’re choosing the location of your stateroom. Here’s a helpful glossary of words every cruiser should know:

  • Forward: The very front of the ship
  • Midship: The middle of the ship
  • Aft: The back of the ship

Aft staterooms are closer to the ship’s vibrations and engine, so keep that in mind if you want as silent of a stateroom location as possible. Forward and aft staterooms tend to have more sway than midship, which is something to keep in mind as you’re booking your room.

Choose a Room

You’ve done your research. There’s an itinerary that’s caught your eye. You’re ready to book your stateroom, the best room on a cruise you could hope for.

Celebrity Edge

Debuted in December 2018, the 2,918-passenger Celebrity Edge stands out for its modernity. The Edge is dressed to the nines in contemporary designs and features a diverse array of technologies, amenities, activities and dining venues on board. Passengers can delight in the ship's rooftop garden, take a dip in one of many ocean-facing pools, work up a sweat on the jogging track or relax at the on-site spa.

You'll find plenty of evening entertainment options, too, including themed bars and lounges, a club and a theater showcasing a variety of productions. The Edge was the first Celebrity ship fitted with the Magic Carpet – the line's cantilevered venue at sea that travels 13 stories. The open-air venue can be repositioned alongside several decks, allowing it to transform from a live music venue to a bar to an exclusive specialty restaurant, depending on its location.

For dining, passengers have 29 options to choose from. These include four main restaurants and specialty options serving a range of cuisines, from sashimi to French bistro classics. After a bite to eat, take a break and relax in your modern stateroom or suite. Every room offers technology that allows guests to control temperature, service and lighting with a touch screen. What's more, with a roughly 2-to-1 passenger-to-crew ratio, service across the ship will be spot on.

Celebrity Edge makes sailings across Europe, Asia, Australia and more.

U.S. News Insider Tip: On Edge Series ships, park yourself at the Sunset Bar with a spicy margarita every evening – it’s the best spot on the ship to watch for the fabled green flash. – Skye Sherman, Contributor

Debuted in October 2021, Rotterdam welcomes up to 2,668 guests. The name hearkens back to the line's founding in the late 19th century, when its first ship, Rotterdam, sailed from the Netherlands to New York. Though the ship's name is rooted in the cruise line's past, its amenities are anything but antiquated.

Among Rotterdam's standout facilities is World Stage, a performance venue that features a two-story, 270-degree wraparound LED screen that creates a panorama of light and sound for audience members. For more entertainment, passengers can catch a performance at any of the ship's numerous music venues, including the Rolling Stone Rock Room and B.B. King's Blues Club.

When travelers aren't grooving to live tunes, they can test their luck at the onboard casino or relax at the spa. Meanwhile, kids can play the day away at the Kids Club. Foodies will be pleased to hear the ship offers eight dining options, including Rudi's Sel de Mer, a French brasserie, and Tamarind, which highlights the culinary traditions of Southeast Asia, China and Japan.

Cabins range in size from 143 square feet to 1,290 square feet, with some of the luxury suites boasting floor-to-ceiling windows, whirlpool baths and verandas with hot tubs.

Sailings aboard Rotterdam depart from ports like Fort Lauderdale, Florida , and Amsterdam to destinations in the Caribbean, Europe and the Panama Canal.

U.S. News Insider Tip: The art collection aboard Rotterdam is valued at more than $4.1 million and has 2,645 pieces of diverse works ranging in value from $500 to $620,000. Take some time to walk around the ship to explore the collections. Each of the three stairwells has a theme that reaches from top to bottom: architecture, music or zoology. – Jill Schildhouse, Contributor

Viking Mars

Viking's newest ship, the Viking Mars accommodates 930 passengers and, since it's a smaller vessel, it can dock in many ports where some of the larger ocean-faring cruise ships can't reach. The all-veranda accommodations on this ship, which debuted in May 2022, range in size from around 270 square feet to 1,448 square feet. In-room amenities include free Wi-Fi access, flat-screen TVs, safes, minibars filled with drinks and snacks, robes, slippers and 24-hour room service.

Visitors will find a relaxing spa, a hair salon, a yoga area and a well-equipped indoor fitness center (plus an outdoor fitness center) aboard the ship. Those looking to unwind with a book in one hand and a cocktail in the other should snag a cozy spot in The Living Room. Like other Viking ships, the Viking Mars offers educational programming, lectures, cooking classes and more on board.

Cruisers can also enjoy amenities like the main pool and hot tub, the infinity pool, the cinema, the theater, a jazz lounge and various bars. Dining options on this ship include Manfredi's Italian Restaurant, Aquavit Terrace, World Café, The Chef's Table and The Kitchen Table.

Viking Mars receives rave reviews from recent cruisers. The variety of excursions, the delectable onboard dining and the comfortable cabins are a few things previous guests highlighted as superb. However, the staff received mixed reviews: Some experienced attentive and friendly employees, while a few noted they were expecting better service across the board for the price point.

Upcoming itineraries on the Viking Mars include cruises with ports of call in Iceland, Norway, Greece, Italy, Spain, the U.S. and Canada.

Seven Seas Explorer

Regent Seven Seas Explorer debuted in 2016. It's one of the largest vessels in the fleet, welcoming up to 746 passengers. The ship makes service a top priority, with 548 crew members on board. According to past cruisers, the staff was friendly and attentive.

Travelers were even more impressed by the all-suite accommodations, which are some of the largest offered among ocean liners. All 373 suites include spacious balconies, marble bathrooms, walk-in closets, interactive flat-screen TVs and unlimited Wi-Fi.

Another high point: the cuisine. Explorer offers eight dining areas that range from the casual Pool Grill to Asian creations at Pacific Rim. As part of the 'Regent Experience,' all specialty dining is included in the cruise fare.

Outside the cabins, guests can spend their days participating in cooking demonstrations, lounging by the pool or relaxing in the library. At night, entertainment options include casino games, cocktail lounges and shows in the Constellation Theater. Complaints about this ship are few and far between, though some reviewers felt the entertainment could be more impressive.

The best perk, according to recent passengers? All shore excursions are included. Seven Seas Explorer sails to destinations in Alaska, Asia, Australia and more.

U.S. News Insider Tip: Pacific Rim is a favorite dining venue among cruisers, with its Asian-inspired cocktails and cuisine offering a selection of dishes from Thailand, Korea, China, Vietnam and Japan. Spin the bronze Tibetan Buddhist prayer wheel as you enter the restaurant and be sure to sample the miso black cod. – Gwen Pratesi, Contributor

The 7 best cruise ship spas

MSN has partnered with The Points Guy for our coverage of credit card products. MSN and The Points Guy may receive a commission from card issuers.

The best cruise ship spas are so tranquil and relaxing they may become not just your personal sanctuary at sea but also the “happy place” you visualize the next time you go to the dentist.

Like most onboard spas, these zen retreats typically feature a thermal suite with a sauna, steam room and maybe a hot tub; a menu of massages and facials; and a salon with hairdressers and manicurists. However, our favorites go above and beyond with spa-inspired shore excursions, calming accommodations and unique treatments and programs aimed at bolstering your mental and physical wellness.

For cruise news, reviews and tips, sign up for TPG’s cruise newsletter .

Here are our picks for the best cruise ship spas that are sure to wipe all your stress away.

LivNordic Spa, Viking Ocean Cruises

The thermal suite on Viking ’s adults-only oceangoing ships is notable not only for its gorgeous design and unique hot and cold treatments but also because it’s complimentary for every passenger on the ship. You don’t need to book a spa treatment or buy a day pass to relax in the calming space, with its gray stone finishings and beautiful faux fireplace.

Viking’s coed spas are distinctly Scandinavian, and include a resistance pool, sauna, lounge chairs lined in heated tiles, steam room, bucket-style ice shower and a snow grotto. The snow grotto is just what it sounds like — a snow-filled, neon-lit space designed to cool you off, therefore mimicking the Scandinavian tradition of rolling around in the fluffy white stuff after your time in the sauna.

If you’re willing to open your wallet for additional pampering, you’ll find an impressive menu of spa treatments, including a Scandinavian spa night option and an array of hard-to-find Norwegian spa products that take advantage of regional ingredients, such as cloudberries.

The line’s two expedition ships have the added benefit of floor-to-ceiling windows, so you can watch whales breaching while you relax in the pool.

Cost to access the thermal suite: $0.

The Spa at Seabourn

Seabourn ’s spa stands out from the crowd thanks to the line’s signature Mindful Living program, which was put together with famed integrative medicine expert Dr. Andrew Weil.

The program includes yoga, guided meditation, “earth grounding” massages, acupuncture, Chinese herbal medicine consultations and even crystal sound baths. Other lines also offer Eastern-inspired wellness lifestyle options, but the Dr. Weil branding on Seabourn’s ships provides an air of authenticity.

Related: 7 extra-charge items on cruise ships that are worth the cost (and 7 that aren’t)

The rest of the spa is also impressive. Seabourn’s newest ships offer spacious spa areas with fitness centers and salons, as well as thermal suites with steam rooms, monsoon showers and heated tiled chairs.

Even the line’s expedition ships, Seabourn Venture and Seabourn Pursuit, have 3,700-square-foot Adam Tihany-designed spas. Each features an airy sauna with floor-to-ceiling windows.

Cost of Mindful Living program: Some activities — such as seminars, meditation and yoga — are included in the cost of your cruise. Others — such as acupuncture ($29) and earth-grounding massage ($179) — require a surcharge.

AquaSpa, Celebrity Cruises

On Celebrity Cruises ’ fabulous Edge-class ships – Celebrity Edge, Celebrity Apex, Celebrity Beyond and the soon-to-launch Celebrity Ascent — you’ll find everything you would imagine in a major city’s top spa and fitness center. Picture a stunning spa with cutting-edge treatments, such as an antigravity massage, and a thermal suite featuring an infrared sauna and a room designed for swinging meditation.

The salon area includes a teeth-whitening program and the first hair salon at sea branded by the Parisian Kerastase line. The 24-hour fitness center is also impressive — with Peloton bikes, barre and high-intensity interval training classes, and even bungee-based classes.

Book an AquaClass category cabin, and you get amenities that take the experience to another level.

Expect complimentary fitness class and Sea Thermal Suite passes, access to a spa concierge, healthy room service options and a yoga mat to use on board. You’ll also find wellness offerings curated by Goop (Gwyneth Paltrow’s lifestyle brand; she serves as a wellness advisor for the line), including a signature smoothie and in-room fitness menus.

Finally, AquaClass provides guests exclusive access to Blu — a restaurant focused on healthy “clean cuisine” options and vegan choices. Don’t miss the muesli, prepared tableside, which was the best I’ve ever had.

Cost of Sea Thermal Suite passes and fitness class passes: A one-week Sea Thermal Suite pass is $219; fitness class passes range in price depending on the types of classes included.

Serene Spa, Regent Seven Seas Cruises

The Serene Spas on Regent Seven Seas Cruises’ newest ships are especially striking — picture plenty of marble flooring, a curved wooden desk and Swarovski crystal sculptures. You might never want to leave the stunning infinity-edge pool set on a teak deck at the back of the ship.

The spacious spas have all the usual fixins – yoga classes, sauna and steam rooms, a full roster of facials and massages, and nail and hair salons. The dual thermal suites are single-sex and bathing-suit-optional, with saunas, steam rooms, showers and a cold room.

Related: First look inside the most expensive luxury cruise ship ever, Regent’s Seven Seas Splendor

You could easily spend the entire day at the spa, but you can also take the pampering off the ship. Regent offers over-the-top wellness tours featuring relaxing experiences in the destinations its ships visit. Look for a visit to the Thermal Baths of the Popes in Viterbo, Italy — just outside of Rome — or a meditation class on the Mediterranean island of Palma de Mallorca.

Cost of wellness tours: Some tours are included in the cost of your cruise (such as sunset yoga in Tenerife and meditation in Mallorca). Others incur a surcharge, such as $139 for the thermal bath experience in Italy.

Senses Spa, Scenic Cruises

The spa on Scenic’s oceangoing expedition vessel, Scenic Eclipse, is a gorgeous place to retreat after a day of exploring on land — whether you’re in the Northwest Passage or Antarctica.

Hang your expedition attire up in the mud room (a place to take off muddy boots after a day of hiking in the tundra) and make your way to the thermal suite, with its gorgeous sauna, indoor Scandinavian plunge pool and outdoor pool, too. (We understand if you skip the outdoor pool in Alaska.)

The stunning slate-lined thermal suite is available to all passengers on board, free of charge, regardless of cabin category or whether they have booked treatments. The spa and salon menu includes facials, salt scrubs, manicures, blowouts and hot stone massages — which would be especially welcome after trudging through the snow to see penguins in Antarctica.

Related: These 6 luxury ships are like nothing you have ever seen before

Like the impressive onboard amenities — which include a submarine and a helicopter — the spa also goes above and beyond with its spa suites. The exquisite spa suites on decks 8 and 9 of Scenic Eclipse have Philippe Starck-designed bathrooms with mist showers that incorporate a range of color selections, giant Jacuzzi tubs that look out onto the sea through a private veranda and glass partitions to the main room that become opaque at the touch of a button. They, of course, offer special access to the spa.

Redemption Spa, Virgin Voyages

Virgin Voyages has worked hard to add playful experiences to its adults-only ships, and its spa is no different. In addition to spa treatments and a healthy juice and smoothie bar, the line’s “well-being” program touts the ship’s coolest, most-talked-about feature – the Squid Ink tattoo parlor. Because we all know that self-expression is another way to promote wellness.

Related: I just got a tattoo on a cruise ship — here’s why you should, too

If the thought of needles makes you break out in a sweat, you can turn up the heat with Virgin’s free fitness classes and alfresco yoga instead. Or feel the temperatures rise in Virgin’s thermal suite, which beckons with heated lounge chairs, an indoor hydrotherapy pool, a hot tub, an unusually large sauna and a steam room.

Then cool off in two cold plunge pools, a mud room (as in a place to smear therapeutic mud all over your body) and a salt room. A three-hour pass to the spa is $39 per person on port days and $59 on sea days.

Another fun feature is a mini salon for men called Stubble & Groom, which features hot-lather shaves and pedicures. You’ll definitely want some manscaping to complement your new tattoo.

Cost of tattoos at Squid Ink: $150 (and up).

Otium, Silversea Cruises

Silversea Cruises ‘ new Otium (pronounced aught-zium) spa concept extends wellness and lavish living from the spa to your suite. The best part is that most of the experiences beyond the actual spa treatments are included in your fare.

The signature Otium Experiences are 100 minutes of heavenly indulgence, combining aromatherapy, massage and body treatments inspired by the gods. Your bliss doesn’t end with the conclusion of your massage. You will be escorted to a relaxation room with indoor and outdoor lounge chairs, access to a steam room and sauna, and decadent nibbles consisting of sparkling wine, cocktails and housemade truffles and marshmallows.

You can keep the hedonistic vibe going upon your return to your suite by requesting an aromatherapy bath with your choice of scents. Or, swaddle yourself in a cashmere blanket on your balcony and ring for lobster and caviar in brioche with lemony mayonnaise or potato fries with truffle oil and Parmesan, all from the Otium Comfort Food Dining menu.

Related: This cruise line is betting big on caviar, Egyptian cotton and other spa-like indulgences

When you are ready to turn in for the night, you’ll find the spa’s reach has extended to your bed. The Otium Soft Touch mattress, with its 400-pocket spring system infused with essential oils and 400-thread-count Egyptian cotton sheets, by luxury Italian designer Rivolta Carmignani, will soothe your tired limbs and whisk away any residual stress you could possibly be feeling on vacation.

The Otium Spa can be found on Silversea’s Silver Dawn and soon-to-debut Silver Nova.

Cost of Otium in-suite spa amenities: $0

Tipping on a cruise: What to know about cruise ship gratuities

Gene Sloan

How much to tip on a cruise is a question that trips up many first-timers. That's because some cruise lines tack daily service fees onto passenger bills — yet many travelers still hand out additional cash gratuities, either as a matter of course or for exemplary service.

The extra cost of the automatic gratuity charges can be a shock to first-time cruisers. At some lines, these charges run as high as $25 per day. And, unlike the typical service fee or resort fee found at a land resort, they are not per room. They are per person .

At some big lines, such as Royal Caribbean and Norwegian Cruise Line , it's not uncommon for a family of four staying in a single cabin to see more than $70 a day in service fees added to their bills. On a typical seven-night cruise, that's around $500 in fees.

That's before you add in any additional tips you wish to give to your room service or favorite bartender or automatic gratuities tacked on to bar, restaurant and spa bills.

For more cruise guides, news and tips, sign up for TPG's cruise newsletter .

Still, not all lines have service fees that high. Some don't charge a service fee at all. In many cases, the service charges are adjustable.

Tipping on a cruise does not have to be complicated, but you need to understand the big picture to budget for your vacation appropriately. Read on to learn all about cruise ship tipping culture and how much you'll need to tip on your next cruise, based on which cruise line you're sailing.

Tipping on a cruise ship: The big picture

Most of the biggest cruise lines automatically add some type of service or gratuity fee onto passenger bills. Lines with such charges include both of the two giants of the cruise business, Royal Caribbean and Carnival Cruise Line , as well as the next three biggest lines MSC Cruises , Norwegian and Princess Cruises .

That said, the total number of lines with a service fee has been shrinking over the years. Many smaller and higher-end cruise operators are folding tips and gratuities into their base fares.

Lines that now cover gratuities in their fares include Azamara , Ponant, Regent Seven Seas Cruises , Scenic Luxury Cruises & Tours, Seabourn , SeaDream Yacht Club , Silversea Cruises and Virgin Voyages .

For lines that do have them, service and gratuity charges are touted as a convenient alternative to the practice of cash tipping on cruise ships — something that once was common.

best cruise ship room service

Cruise lines say they pass the money collected from service charges to the shipboard crew. They say the money is shared not just with front-of-house crew, such as room attendants and waitstaff, but also with behind-the-scenes workers. In that sense, the current system is more equitable than the old system of cash tipping, which favored certain workers, lines say.

Still, some critics see the charges as a sneaky way for cruise lines to make their fares appear lower than they really are. In this line of thinking, lines with these charges are essentially breaking out a good chunk of onboard labor costs as a separate line item on your bill.

How service charges are levied

At most lines, you can pay your service charges before sailing (at the same time you pay your cruise fare). Alternatively, you can have the charges added to your room bill on board.

The big advantage to paying cruise tips in advance is that you lock in the current rate. If your line raises the rate between the time you pay and the time you sail, you won't pay more.

Some people also like to pay their service charges in advance for budgeting purposes. It'll be one less thing on your final bill at the end of the cruise.

If you prefer to pay for tips once you're on board your cruise, you'll generally find that the gratuities automatically appear on your bill. You don't have to do anything.

That said, if you want to, you can often adjust the charges (either up or down) while you're on board by visiting the guest relations desk. If you are adjusting a gratuity charge downward, expect to be asked about the reasons behind the adjustment. The guest relations staff will want to know if you've experienced particular service issues.

If you leave the service charge on your room bill, you are not expected to leave additional cruise tips for your room attendant or waiters. That's the whole point of the service charge.

Similarly, if you're on a higher-end ship that lists gratuities as being included in the fare, that means just what it says. You don't have to tip on these cruises because the line is already paying gratuities to the staff on your behalf. Additional cash gifts are not expected.

Still, some people do leave a little extra for crew members who go above and beyond. Others tip their room service or waitstaff at their favorite bar, either early in the cruise in the hope of getting better service or at the end to thank them for enhancing the vacation experience. How much to tip extra on a cruise is entirely up to you because it is in no way required.

Included cruise tips as a booking perk

If you dislike tipping on cruise ships but can't afford to sail on an all-inclusive line, look for promotions when cruise lines with service charges throw in free gratuities as a booking incentive.

For instance, in recent years, Norwegian often ran Free at Sea promotions that included free crew tips in addition to free shipboard Wi-Fi and a free drinks package . The line hasn't been doing that as much lately, but these offers often come back at times when brands need to drum up more business.

Additionally, several major lines in the past couple of years have begun offering bundle pricing to customers who pay for cruise tips, Wi-Fi charges and an onboard drinks package all at once in advance of sailing, potentially at a discount.

Princess, for example, has added a Princess Plus plan as a booking option. It gives passengers prepaid gratuities (Princess calls these "crew appreciation" fees), a single-device Wi-Fi plan and a basic beverage package for a single bundled price of $60 per person, per day.

Don't worry: When lines offer such deals, it doesn't mean the crew will receive fewer tips the week you cruise. The lines that offer these deals say they'll pay a normal gratuity to the crew on your behalf.

Additional cruise ship tipping

Daily service charges are not the only cruise tips you will pay on board. Many cruise lines will tack an automatic gratuity charge onto the bill for extra-fee drinks, restaurant meals and spa treatments.

The included tip amount varies by cruise line but is typically 15% to 20% of the bill. Be warned that the receipt often includes a line for an additional gratuity, even when one is automatically added. This can trick many cruisers into tipping twice. Never feel pressured to add an extra tip when you've already paid one.

Note that if you purchase a dining or beverage package, most cruise lines will charge you gratuities based on a percentage of the package price. If you get one of these packages for free as a booking perk, as with Norwegian Cruise Line's Free at Sea promotion, you might still be required to pay the gratuities on the free perk.

For example, Norwegian offers a complimentary Open Bar drinks package for travelers who book its Free at Sea promotion. The cost of that package is typically $109 per person, per day. The mandatory 20% gratuity comes out to nearly $22 per day. That means two people sharing a room on a seven-night cruise would pay $308 in tips for an otherwise free drinks package — on top of their daily service charge fees.

Cruisers should also bring cash to tip the porters who bring their bags onto the ship (usually $2 per bag), as well as tour guides in port ($5 to $10 per person for half-day tours, $10 to $20 for full-day excursions and $2 for non-guide drivers). Piano bar regulars know that a cash tip will increase the chances of the pianist choosing and performing your song request.

How much should you tip on each cruise line?

best cruise ship room service

If you're wondering how much you should tip on the specific cruise line you're considering or have already booked, we've compiled that information here. Below is a line-by-line look at policies for automatic gratuity charges (called service charges or "crew appreciation" charges at some lines). The rates listed are per person, per day. They were accurate as of the publishing of this story.

Remember that all additional tipping is at your discretion. Any amount is fine and will be appreciated by the hard-working crew.
