Phil Collins - European tour 1997
There is not much to say about the European tour that has not already been said about the North American tour . The concerts were basically identical, the stage was the same, and rumours that both the set list and the stage would change proved wrong. You have sent us lots of reports from the shows and we would like to publish some of them. To spare you repetitions we have used mainly those parts that mention special events or personal assessments.

Rotterdam, 29/10/97
Phil Collins played two shows in the Netherlands. A crowd of some 10,000 created a great atmosphere by really getting into Philâs âgreatest hits paradeâ. The show I attended on 29/11 was good, just like we are used to them: very good sound, very effective light show, an inventive stage design and Phil Collins running around. What else could one ask for? Nothing, actually. But I felt that somehow it was like the previous Genesis tour: It all went too smooth, too much according to schedule. There were no big surprises. It was particularly noticeable that the set was for the most part a copy of the Serious tour. Where were the songs from Both Sides ? Surely they are not that bad! It seems Phil wanted to forget that dark episode from which Both Sides came and continue from the happier times of âŚBut Seriously . Fans of more complex songs were mildly disappointed in the end. But the qualities of the music and the light show are among the best you can see and hear these days. By Gerrit Bekkernens
Hannover, 31/10 + 01/11/97
In the late 80s I discovered Genesis through Phil Collins. For a couple of years he was the greatest for me. Things have changed for Phil and about Phil since then â many things with which I am not quite happy. But I like to wallow in nostalgia and so I went to see him twice on his current tour. The atmosphere at the Hannover shows was alright, but I have not had a single moment of surprise. Everything followed a carefully defined plan, from the first note of Hand In Hand to the last note of Take Me Home . The only highlights were Long Long Way To Go , In The Air Tonight , the drum trio and songs from the new album like Lorenzo and Just Another Story , though these have not achieved the usual hit status yet. The band was great, but one wonders whether Phil really needs this big ensemble to deliver a good show. Apparently this has become part of his entertainment. As after many shows in recent years â not only Philâs, but also Genesisâs or Peter Gabrielâs â I left the venue with mixed emotions. On the one hand the shows were perfectly fine, on the other hand I could think of many things that could have been better. by Martin Antes
Hannover, 31/10/97
The show was breathtaking, for Phil as well as for the audience. It is a remarkable feat to keep up such a tempo without a break. Though few songs were played from the new album and none (!) from the previous record, I differ from some people in the audience whose post-show discussions I overheard in that the new songs were very strong and quite up to the studio versions. I also found the drum duet â sorry, the drum trio very exciting; it grooved and made you want to dance. The negative things about the show do not lie with Phil and his band but in those idiotic members of the audience who had to clap along to every ballad and even to In The Air Tonight â and who clapped so badly against the beat that I could have thrown a fit. What would they know about romantic atmosphere? There are different ways of showing that: What about the good old lighters, sparklers and so on - anything but that stupid âyay, I noticed the rhythmâ-clapping. Oh well, never mind. The band did a great job. They showed how to make music and how to create a great atmosphere (also by dancing and some showmanship). One should also not underestimate Ronnie Caryl, though I personally could not hear him. by Lars KĂśster
Gent, 03/11/97
The atmosphere in the venue was great from the very beginning. After the first few songs Phil welcomed the audience with the usual paper in this hand â in Flemish. When he continued in French and some people booed him for it he said âSo you have the same problems with it as Iâ- which had the audience laughing. He would announce things in both languages before he later stuck to Flemish and added some mumbling, presumably in French. After the first twelve songs the band left Phil alone on the stage. He explained he would now sing some songs about relationships, a topic he had experience in. After that block the intro to In The Air Tonight began. Phil walked around, sang, and slowly moved towards his drumkit â only it would not come up from below the stage so he jumped down there. We could hear but not see him drum. After In The Air Tonight Phil announced that they had a problem with the power supply and therefore had to take a ten minute break. He added that if he could find the person responsible for it he would kick them in the back. After the ten minutes Phil appeared again and apologized that the delay would take a bit longer. After five more minutes everybody was surprised to hear the first notes of In The Air Tonight , and they played the song again in full â and it was one of the best versions I have ever heard. By Robert Vercruysse
Various shows I
Over the tour I have come to really appreciate the round stage. This tour will long be in everyoneâs memories. Phil had brought a gigantic light show and got literally everybody in the capacity crowd to stand up. He was at ease, very relaxed and always up for a joke with the audience. At various points he could be seen running his fingers through what sparse amounts of hair were left on one fanâs head; when he noticed people were taking photos from the audience he patiently stood and struck various poses. The band were also in a giving mood, throwing guitar picks and drumsticks from the stage. In Hannover there was the rare incident that several fans fainted. Phil stood slightly helpless on the stage and watched how the people were carried out. It must have been a first for a Phil Collins show. Collins and the band have definitely lived up to the crowdâs expectations â it was worthwhile waiting for every single show. By Diana Kalsow
London, 13/12/97
The venue was almost full at a quarter to eight. The band arrived only shortly before the show, it seems, for we could see Brad Cole, Arnold McCuller and Harry Kim in winter coats as they walked down the aisles to the soundboard and vanished under the stage. The show began with the Hand In Hand intro. Phil weaved his way through the rows and boarded his ship in the usual manner. Initially the sound was far from perfect, and we wondered whether the acoustics were so bad in the venue or whether the musicians were out of synch. The sound improved very much over the next few songs. Canât Turn Back The Years was a surprise; Phil had not played this song in Dortmund or Stuttgart. The audience warmed up to the show only during In The Air Tonight and Easy Lover . The selection of hats for Wear My Hat were augmented by a blue bobble hat and a Santa Claus cap (from the audience). Phil looked funny but not overly intelligent with both hats. After Sussudio we were treated to Always as the first encore before the final song, Take Me Home . During that latter song there was an incident as a fan ran up the stage and hugged Phil so that he had to stop moving around and singing. After the intruder had been removed the lights had already come down so low from the ceiling that Phil had to leave the stage slightly annoyed across the rail. This concert was an unforgettable experience. Next to Phil, Daryl and Nathan and the strong-voiced Amy Keys really stood out. by Kersten Opdenbusch
Various shows II
This year I have attended Phil Collins shows in Orlando, Berlin, Stuttgart, Munich (twice), Leipzig and London. Each show was special for me, and I was most impressed by Philâs physical fitness â he would run around the stage like a dervish. It was also remarkable how much energy the band had and how much they enjoyed the music. It was a great idea to have a round stage, for one could see everything and everyone close (at least at times). There was little jostling in the venue because people spread out all around the stage. The light show with its many colours and effects was gigantic. In The Air Tonight was particularly thrilling. Phil messed up the end of Long Long Way To Go in Munich â in the final bar he continued to sing âswitch it offâ instead of âturn it offâ. The band burst out laughing and he held his head in embarrassment. The atmosphere in Munich was great during both shows. The audience sang along and clapped along right from the start, and these were probably the best shows I have seen on this tour. Phil dropped two songs at the last Leipzig gig, probably because he did not feel very well. Philâs 1997 band is probably the best tour band he has had so far. Just consider the drum trio that involved the whole band. Ricky Lawson on drums is an improvement even over Chester Thompson, and Luis ContĂŠ is unsurpassed on percussions. Special mentions to the Vine Street Horns, from which Andrew Woolfolk stood out. The famous finale of Take Me Home is a piece I cannot stand hearing anymore after so many shows, but, well, it is a good finale. by Karin Lemberg all reports English by Martin Klinkhardt

PHIL COLLINS TRIPS THE 'LIGHT' FANTASTIC
Billed as "A Trip Into the Light," Phil Collins's new tour is designed to remind folks that his recent divorce and the end of his 25-year association with Genesis haven't got him down. But more important, it's a reminder that Collins remains one of pop music's most disarming and tireless showmen. The balding British singer-songwriter and drummer doesn't look like a rock star and, mercifully, he doesn't act like one, either.
At USAir Arena on Wednesday night, his performance was energetically paced and marked by an easygoing charm and humor. The stage was set up like a cruise ship, with a wood deck circling its perimeter, and every so often the casually dressed Collins would jog a few laps on the deck or join a conga line with his longtime "shipmates" -- a 13-piece band featuring bassist Nathan East, guitarist Daryl Stuermer, singers Amy Keys and Arnold McCuller, and the Vine Street Horns.
Several songs from "Dance Into the Light," Collins's current album, helped set a festive, intensely polyrhythmic tone evoking the African pop of Johnny Clegg and Youssou N'Dour, or the "Graceland"-era music of Paul Simon. While Collins didn't eschew songs concerning social issues -- "Another Day in Paradise" provided a reflective interlude and Bob Dylan's "The Times They Are a-Changin' " offered a less effective tangent -- it was clear that on this tour at least, the optimism implicit in Collins's new music is the real message. Of course, most of the audience turned out to hear Collins reprise his hits. He happily obliged with, among other tunes, crowd-pleasing and crowd-harmonized versions of "Easy Lover," "You Can't Hurry Love," "Take Me Home," and, inevitably, "Sussudio."

JOHN SIMMSâ LIGHT TRAILS â TRIP INTO THE LIGHT FANTASTIC (2023)
Updated: Oct 9, 2023
Trip into the Light Fantastic is a follow-up to Light Trails positively reviewed first release Chromatology (2022). Leader John Simms was guitarist/ vocalist on the legendary CLEAR BLUE SKY 1971 Vertigo album. A visit to Johnâs website tells you of how highly regarded John is as a guitarist and singer, having played and sang with Ginger Baker , John Entwistle and Bernie Torme , and there is even rare footage of him playing at the Marquee.
The album really kicks off on âDream of the Tellurianâ, permeated by an air of mystery with Maxineâs otherworldly vocals. Johnâs familiar warm vocals surface on âTransformationâ and the description on the Light Trailsâ Bandcamp site of âchannelling power rock through dreamy prog rockâ is a pretty fair one. âRendezvous in the Starsâ is a mind-blowing instrumental with top notch synth (Dave Hendry AKA Ohead) and guitar; Johnsâ vocals return on âTogetherâ, which is the heaviest track, with a nice quieter passage when John changes guitars. âFollow the Riverâ is just beautiful with Maxâs lyrics once again making us think of spiritual rather than material, insignificant things (if only all music were like this!) The album ends with the 11-minute tour de force instrumental âA Time before Timeâ: the synth and piano providing a splendid canvas for the mystical guitar work.
Trip into the Light Fantastic seems to exist in an expanding space. Each time I listen I go deeper into it; a tonic in these troubled times where large helpings of escapism is what we all need. The âcrossoverâ aspect and âlight and shadeâ should appeal to a much wider audience- in a word âessentialâ.

My Tour Operator Is a B Corp. What Does That Mean? Should I Care?
A growing number of travel operators are undergoing the B Corp certification process, which can offer insight into a companyâs environmental and social initiatives.
By Sophie Stuber
Tanya Dohoney has worked on sustainability initiatives for decades. A retired attorney from Texas now living in Paris, she even started the recycling program for her workplace. When it comes to travel, she also values environmentally and socially responsible companies, which led her to choose Intrepid Travel , a certified B Corp company, for a tour in Morocco in 2019.
The sheer number of sustainability certifications for the travel and tourism industry is almost overwhelming and certainly confusing. Certified B Corp enterprises must meet standards set by B Lab , a Pennsylvania-based nonprofit founded in 2006 that awards for-profit companies with certifications for social and environmental performance, transparency and accountability. It can take years â and thousands of dollars â to achieve this accreditation. Globally, there are only 62 certified B Corps in the travel industry and 76 in accommodation and hospitality.
âWhen you see the B Corp logo, I know itâs been at least semi-vetted,â Ms. Dohoney, 64, said. âI do worry about greenwashing, but you have to start somewhere.â
Other travelers, increasingly concerned about the environmental and social impact of their planes, trains, food waste and more, feel the same way, and a growing number of travel operators are undergoing the B Corp certification process, joining multimillion dollar brands like Patagonia and Athleta, to differentiate themselves from competitors.
Aurora Expeditions , a small ship tour operator focused on polar travel, became certified in 2024, joining other travel companies like the lodging company Sawdayâs , and tour companies Selective Asia and Byway . But Hayley Peacock-Gower, Auroraâs chief marketing officer, said the company has focused on sustainable travel since its inception.
âMuch of this work we were already doing, but we have now committed to much more accountability and made a legal agreement to sustainability,â she said, adding that Aurora also amended the companyâs constitution and formalized internal policies as part of the B Corp process.
Whatâs the certification process?
Companies are scored on five criteria â governance, workersâ rights, community impact, environmental impact and âstewardship of its customersâ â and must achieve an assessment score of 80 or above to pass B Labâs âImpact Assessment.â Once approved, a company must pay an annual fee based on gross annual revenue and location. For U.S.-based enterprises, this ranges from $2,000 for companies with under $500,000 in gross annual revenue to $50,000 for companies with revenue from $750,000 to $1 billion. (Some organizations, like those owned by women or veterans, can also qualify for discounted fees .)
âB Corp certification offers tourists confidence that theyâre visiting and using providers that are responsible,â said Jorge Fontanez, chief executive at B Lab for the United States and Canada.
With more than 2,909 employees, Intrepid Travel is the largest B Corp in the travel industry, earning its certification in 2018.
âWhen there is so much green fatigue and so many certifications, itâs really hard to discern whatâs best,â said Mikey Sadowski, Intrepidâs vice president of global communication. âWe felt that B Corp really did have this disproportionate edge and level of trust.â
To meet B Corp standards, Intrepid, which offers trips in 120 countries on seven continents, focuses on initiatives like hiring local guides, sourcing local ingredients and materials, and reducing carbon emissions by planning train-based itineraries â instead of using air transit â when possible.
The Australia-based company recently completed its B Corp re-certification, which in 2024 includes an annual fee of 51,750 Australian dollars ($33,625) and another 900 Australian dollars ($585) for a submission fee, Mr. Sadowski said. For their original certification in 2018, the company also paid a one-time verification fee of 14,500 Australian dollars ($9,573).
Who gets left out?
While this certification can offer insights into a companyâs environmental and social initiatives â and perhaps maximize profits, by winning the business of like-minded travelers â these tours and accommodations are often geared toward customers with deep pockets.
For budget travelers or those of less economic means, it can be challenging to find affordable travel companies with B Corp certifications.
âThe reality is, B Corps generally skew to the luxury side of the market. And the idea of having any B Corp hostels, for example, is very rare,â said Nick Pinto, a 31-year-old Colorado-based marketing manager who spends several months a year working and traveling abroad.
Mr. Pinto calls himself a âbudget conscious travelerâ and has found heâs priced out of B Corp accommodations.
âItâs tricky because you want programs like B Corp to be inclusive to create a broader movement,â he said. Mr. Pinto recently spent several weeks in Mexico, but had noted that there were only two certified B Corp hotels in the country.
A third company, Hoteles BF , has since been certified.
What other certifications are out there?
Plenty, along with guidelines, verifications and âecostars.â The last, a certification doled out by the for-profit Ecostars , evaluates hotelsâ environmental impact per visitor stay. This certification, free to receive and apply for, is a fully digital process that takes two days on average to receive. Other certifications gauge sustainability efforts for short-term accommodations, tour groups and other subsectors of the travel industry.
To receive certification from the 1% for the Planet nonprofit, which was co-founded by the Patagonia founder Yvon Chouinard and Craig Mathews, of Blue Ribbon Flies, a fly-fishing outfitter, member companies must commit to donating 1 percent of their gross proceeds to environmental organizations. Annual dues start at $500.
The Global Sustainable Tourism Council nonprofit, which includes among its members government tourism boards, travel companies, tour operators and N.G.O.s, vets sustainability certificates.
Organizations also rely on guidelines and resolutions issued by the United Nations as part of the entityâs sustainable development agenda . The guidelines call for biodiversity and climate action initiatives, as well as energy efficiency and renewable energy usage in accommodations. Courses and webinars, which are free to enroll in and to view, charge a per-course fee of 49 euros ($53) if a user wants to complete assignments and receive a certificate of completion.
Many tour operators and travel companies have additionally announced efforts to reach net carbon neutrality, but carbon offsets have been shown to rarely capture or reduce real emissions, or reduce future emissions. The tour operator Run the Alps used to offset the flight emissions for travelers coming to its tours, but the company is re-evaluating the practice.
âOffsetting is not the panacea we hoped it was,â said Hillary Gerardi, the sustainability director at Run the Alps. âWeâre trying to move from being good to doing good, which means beyond reducing our footprint, weâre trying to leave some positive impact in our community.â
The tour operator is a member of 1% for the Planet and works with the local research center and citizen-science organizer, CREA Mont Blanc .
But even when a travel company is committed to sustainability, B Corp certification can be a big ask for smaller operations.
âWeâre entirely aligned with B Corp status, but up until this year, we were a really tiny company. The certification and process would have been too onerous,â said Doug Mayer, the companyâs founder.
But with the companyâs growth, Mayer is considering taking the step.
âI can see it coming up for us,â he said.

Monetâs two-metre-tall artwork Les Nymph ĂŠ as (The Water Lilies) were inspired by his iconic gardens in Giverny, and you can see them them in Parisâ gorgeous MusĂŠe de lâOrangerie as a wonderful prelude to this look at some of northern Franceâs loveliest gardens. Monetâs gardens have been maintained as they were in his time, along with his house, while the surrounding village is lovely for a wander, with artistsâ studios to peer into.
From there youâll head to fairytale-like Château de Chantilly, with glorious landscaped gardens and vast estate to lose yourself in. You will also spend time with garden columnist Paula McWaters.

2) Visit walled gardens and other English gems from a Peak District manor
Youâll discover the once-abandoned, gorgeously renovated 16th-century Easton Walled Gardens with their Victorian flourishes with young horticulturalist Arthur Parkinson as part of this trip.
Youâll also get to wander around the Royal Horticultural Society's innovative northern flagship, the RHS Harlow Carr, one of the oldest medieval manor houses in the UK, Haddon Hall, and Hardwick Hall, a Elizabethan country house amid orchards, woodlands, and roses - and in-between those relax in a Peak District manor-house hotel and spa.

4) Combine Loire châteaux and Monetâs garden on a tour of the 'Garden of France'
The Loire Valley is world-famous for its magnificent châteaux and their superb gardens, along with churches and cathedrals and fabulous French cuisine. Among icons youâll visit on this marvellous tour are Chenonceau, Villandry, Chinon, and Amboise, while youâll also enjoy idyllic landscapes in spades in this vineyard-dotted region with its wine-cellar tours with tastings.
Youâll also get to venture up to Monet's house and garden at Giverny, to see the sublime Japanese water garden that inspired some of his most famous works, and the spectacular Château de Fontainebleau, which includes the largest formal garden in Europe, Le Grand Parterre.
When? May 2024
5) A horticultural hurrah in the Atlantic's 'floating garden'
Renowned for its volcanic landscape and lush gardens, Madeira â a.k.a 'The Floating Garden in the Atlantic' â grows a diverse array of flora from the purple-bloomed jacaranda trees, rare orchids to bird of paradise flowers. See them all in their glory on a garden tour of the Botanical Gardens, Monte Palace Tropical Garden and Palheiro Gardens. 6) Visit the rolling estate gardens in the Garden of England
Stay a little closer to home and enjoy a quintessential garden holiday in Kent, aka the Garden of England. Named after its sheer abundance of orchards and hop gardens, the southeastern county and bordering Sussex are jam-packed with some magnificent gardens to explore. Take a garden tour of the roses and lavender beds in Pashley Manor, visit the romantic woodland glades and walled gardens in Scotney Castle or enjoy a stroll around Great Comp Garden, the grounds of a beautiful Georgian farmhouse.
A highlight of any trip to Kent is Sissinghurst Castle, home to possibly Kent's most famous gardens. The Grade I parkland was created by poet and author, Vita Sackville-West, and her husband, Harold Nicolson, who were particularly charmed by the views of the estate from the top of the castle's Elizabethan Tower. You'll also get to meet designer Sarah Raven and listen to a special talk.
7) Go garden Scilly on the UK's most southwesterly archipelago
White-sand beaches, crystal clear waters and some spectacular gardens, the Isles of Scilly are often confused with somewhere more tropical. While the archipelago off the southwest of England has five inhabited islands, this trip is based on the main island of St Marys. After breakfast in The Atlantic Hotel, take a boat trip over to the other islands and witness some of its famous wildlife, including dolphins, whales and the Atlantic grey seal.
Another highlight of the trip is a day tour of Tresco, where you'll discover Tresco Abbey Garden, a 19th-century garden. Known as 'Kew without the glass', this beautiful botanical gardens grows legions of subtropical plants and rare species from more than 80 countries. You'll be joined by Julian Branscombe, Chief Executive of the Isles of Scilly Wildlife Trust.
