Egyptian security status makes it a safe place to visit at the moment. Visiting the area in recent years has been a lot safer, so you're in for a real treat! As a conclusion, travelers should use common sense to avoid getting into difficulties, such as not talking to strangers or wandering alone in backstreets, dark and quiet streets.

You will have a fantastic experience with Egypt United Tours' Egyptologist tour guide, especially if you are travelling with him. Someone who has already led several Pyramids tours is therefore anticipated to guide your party on a Pyramids trip. When in doubt, stay with the guide because dealing with the local population on one's own can be challenging.

Water from the tap isn't a good idea. Your own water container or bottled water should be used... Stay away from street cats and dogs if you don't have all of your vaccinations with you. Whenever you visit a sacred site, you should dress modestly. Egypt prohibits the photographing of police and military people, vehicles, and structures without permission.

Nationals of all Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) nations are exempt from Egypt's visa requirements for stays of up to 90 days, as are citizens of South Africa and Malaysia, who can stay in Egypt visa-free for up to 15 days. In other countries travelers will be most likely to provide an entry visa.

Visiting Egypt from South Africa is affordable and convenient. Egypt is an incredible destination with something for everyone. Egypt tours from South Africa can be surprising affordable. If you are willing to shop around for your flight tickets, and you book your tour through a reputable Egypt tour operator, a trip to Egypt from South Africa can be like dream come true. Of course, before you go ahead and book any Egypt tour packages from South Africa, it is always a good idea to get a better idea of what to expect.

In this post, we will look at several things you should take into account before you book any Egypt tours from South Africa. Our aim is to make it easier for you enjoy a flawless and totally hassle-free vacation in the Land of the Pharaohs. Let’s begin paving the path to your once in a lifetime dream vacation.

Finding the Right Egypt Tour Operator from South Africa

Egypt Tours from South Africa - Karnak Temple Complex, Luxor

Karnak Temple Complex, Luxor

The internet is awash with tour operators offering all sorts of Egypt holiday packages from South Africa. Many of these tour operators are based overseas, while some might even be based in South Africa. The problem with this is that most tour operators outside of Egypt tend to charge more for their tours compared to locally based Egypt tour operators.

Booking your tour through a well-established local tour operator can save you a fair amount of money. Well-established local companies will also have their own local guides and drivers who have been vetted to further ensure your safety. And, if you happen to run into any problems during your stay, it’s nice to know that you can call on your tour representative if you need help. A good tour company should be able to provide customer assistance 24/7.

Choosing the Perfect Egypt Tour from South Africa

There is no shortage of Egypt packages from South Africa, but if you really want this to be a dream vacation, you need to give it some thought before you book a particular tour. Whatever you do, you should never base you decision solely on cost. If an offer looks too good to be true, it almost certainly is. Look for a tour operator that has been established for several years, and one with a solid reputation.

Once you have found a tour operator that you feel you can trust, then you will need to decide on the sort of holiday you want. At Aribiya Tours, we have Egypt tours from South Africa to suite all tastes. We have Nile cruise holidays, Red Sea diving holidays, Sahara Desert adventures, and more. While all of these tours are different, they all include sightseeing opportunities which are unlike anything you have ever imagined. All of them are also done in absolute comfort and style with clean and modern air-conditioned vehicles; 4 and 5 star accommodation; 5 star cruises and professional Egyptologist guided tours.

When Is the Best Time To Visit Egypt?

If beautifully pleasant weather is one of your top priorities, then it would be best for you to visit any time from October to April. However, this represents the high season in Egypt, so expect to pay more for your tour. Even if you travel independently, it will still cost you more because hotels and cruise ship operators all charge more during the high season.

If getting the best possible prices is one of your top priorities, then it would be best to visit any time from May to September. This represents the low season in Egypt, so Egypt tours from South Africa cost less if you visit during this period.

Egypt Passport Requirements for South African Citizens

You need to be in possession of a valid and undamaged passport in order to visit Egypt. Your passport should have at least two blank pages. If you book one of our multi-destination Egypt packages from South Africa, you will need additional blank pages in your passport for each of the countries that are featured in your chosen tour itinerary.

Your passport must also be valid for at least six more months after your planned departure date from Egypt and any other countries you visit during your tour. It is strongly recommended that you check the expiry date in your passport before booking any Egypt tours from South Africa.

Egypt Entry Visa Requirements for South African Citizens

South African passport holders are required to obtain an entry visa for Egypt prior to arriving in the country. Despite what you might read online, South African nationals are NOT able to obtain a Visa-on-Arrival in Egypt. You will need to apply for an Egypt entry visa at the Egyptian Embassy in Pretoria, South Africa.

An application form must be completed for each individual who is going to be traveling with you. In addition to passports and application forms, you will also need to show proof of yellow fever inoculation, along with a copy of your tour itinerary or airline tickets. The embassy will also want to see the original birth certificates of any minors who will be traveling with you.

Occasionally, the embassy may ask you to provide proof of funds in the form or original stamped bank statements. This is not a mandatory requirement, but the embassy can request it. Now for the good news: Egypt tourist visas are issued to South African nationals free of charge. That’s right, you get your visa for free.

VISIT CAIRO, NILE & ABU SIMBEL

There is really nothing that can bring Ancient Egypt to life like seeing Egypt for yourself. Tick off the quintessential bucket list items in Cairo before sailing south in between the contrasts of the Sahara against the lush greenery either side of the Nile to witness some of the most incredible ancient sites and hieroglyphs in Edfu and Luxor. If you can spare the time Abu Simbel is a must-see - the last remaining colossal carvings for Rameses II and his devotion to his Queen Nefertari will blow your mind.

View of the Nile River, Egypt

TAKE A CRUISE DOWN THE NILE RIVER

The world’s longest river and its extraordinary monuments, the stunningly fertile valley and the barren beauty of the surrounding desert, the light and heat, and the joy of slow travel in a superfast world all add up to one of the highlights of a trip to Egypt. By night there is a variety of entertainment when you cruise - cocktails, dancing and fancy-dress parties where passengers are encouraged to ‘dress like an Egyptian’. So fun!

Egypt Cairo Museum

VISIT THE CAIRO MUSEUM

Cairo’s Egyptian Museum is a pretty pink building, home to an extensive collection of ancient Egyptian antiquities. If you want to immerse yourself even more in Egyptian culture, I always try to learn a few local words and phrases as it really makes travelling easier. Start with 'Salām alaykum' - that’s 'hello' in Egyptian Arabic!

WHAT TO EAT & DRINK IN EGYPT

Feasting on traditional Egyptian food is one of the best parts of any trip to Egypt, and we’ll show you where to find all the best eats.

FUL MEDAMES

You’ll be eating like the ancient Egyptians when you bite into ful medames, a classic breakfast dish made from fava beans. These tasty beans can be prepared in dozens of different ways, like topping it with lemon juice, butter, olive oil, sausage, cheese and fried eggs, or wrapping them up in a fluffy pita bread. Delicious!

If you’re after some Egyptian street food, look no further than kushari, a beloved dish made from macaroni, rice, chickpeas and black lentils smothered in tomato sauce and fried onions. It’s a total carb-fest and one of Egypt’s best comfort foods. Top it off with a dash of chilli sauce, garlic vinegar or crispy onions.

When we think of falafel we think big flavour, and the Egyptians have put an extra tasty twist on this world favourite. Ta’meya (Egyptian falafel) is made with crushed fava beans mixed with chickpea flour, leek, garlic, onion and all kinds of herbs and spices like parsley, paprika, cumin and cayenne pepper. Wrap it in a pita, top it with tahini and you’re set!

WHEN IS BEST TO VISIT EGYPT

Our favourite seasons in Egypt are spring and autumn with milder weather that’s perfect for long days filled with adventure.

BEST TIME FOR AN EGYPT CRUISE DOWN THE NILE

The best time to go on a Nile river cruise is between October and May, when the weather is cooler, as the summer season gets baking hot.

BEST TIME TO GO TO THE BEACH IN EGYPT

We love heading to the beaches in Egypt anywhere from March until November, as these are the best months for snorkeling and spotting dolphins.

BEST TIME TO VISIT EGYPT’S ANCIENT WONDERS

It’s best to explore the ancient sites in autumn (March to May) and spring (September to November) for better weather and fewer crowds.

HOW TO TRAVEL RESPONSIBLY IN EGYPT

Respect the religious customs.

The state religion of Egypt is Islam, so you’ll need to be respectful of customs like dressing modestly, not being intimate in public and not drinking in public.

Use water wisely

Egypt suffers from a severe water shortage so make sure you use water sparingly, with shorter showers, turning taps off tightly and using towels and sheets more than once.

Take care of the turtles

Sea turtles are precious residents of the Red Sea and you can help keep them safe in nesting season by giving them plenty of room and never using flash photography.

Frequent Questions & Answers

Below are some of the frequently asked questions and their answers, we hope you find what you are looking for. If you didn’t find what you are looking for, then send us a message and we will find the answer for you.

Is Egypt safe to visit?

Egypt is very safe to visit and the police, tourist police, and army are in prominence wherever you go, giving you the knowledge that you are secure in your surroundings. Egypt prides itself on its high safety record for tourists and will do all it can to maintain this.

How do I get my tourist visa?

Usually you need to apply to your local Egyptian Embassy or Consulate General for a pre-entry tourist visa but if you are from North America, Western Europe, Australia/New Zealand, Brazil/Argentina or Hong Kong/Japan/Macau/Malaysia or Singapore you can get your tourist visa upon arrival in Egypt.

How do I get my tourist visa if I live in a different country to that of my passport?

If you hold a residence permit in the country you live in you can apply to the Egyptian Embassy/Consulate General in that country, otherwise you have to apply to the country that issued your passport.

I am staying in a resort in the Sinai; can I visit Cairo or Luxor?

Though many nationalities are exempt from requiring a visa for the many Sinai resorts, a full tourist visa is required if you come to any place in Egypt that lies to the west of the Red Sea/Suez Canal.

I am staying in a resort in Hurghada, can I visit Cairo or Luxor?

Though many nationalities are exempt from requiring a visa for staying in Hurghada, once you leave the confines of the town a full tourist visa is required.

I am going to visit Jordan and/or Israel; will I require a visa when coming back to Egypt?

Yes, as soon as you leave Egypt your visa will be stamped and so you will require another one. If you are from a country that can get their visa upon arrival in Egypt, you can get the new one when you re-enter the country, but if you require a pre-entry visa you should apply for 2 of these, using the second one when you re-enter Egypt.

Can my tourist visa be extended to more than one month?

A tourist visa can be extended if required. To do this you have to apply to Mogamma, in Tahrir Square, or to the equivalent offices in Alexandria, Luxor or Sharm El-Sheikh

What is the difference between a 5 star and a 5 star deluxe hotel/cruise?

The star ratings get higher as the facilities and overall standard of the accommodation gets better and so it is easier to imagine 5 star deluxe (or any suffix added to 5 star) as being 6 star

Why am I being advised to stay in a hotel close to the pyramids rather than in Downtown?

If you are only in Cairo for a few days it is a lot easier for you to see the sites starting from a base in Giza. The traffic from downtown to the pyramids can cause the journey to take over an hour, which means an early start if you want a full day’s experience, especially if you require to enter the Great Pyramid, when you have to be at the plateau before 0800. If you are in Cairo for a while, the Hotels at the Pyramids are all on a resort basis, built in acres of land with outdoor swimming pools and relaxing areas, something which Downtown hotels cannot really provide. This is why you tend to find that the Downtown hotels are built like towers; very tall and narrow, while Giza Pyramid hotels are limited in height, but cover more ground.

Cost also comes into the equation as a simple 4 star Hotel in the Downtown area is more than often more expensive than a 5 star resort in the Pyramids area. Cairo is like most major cities in the world in this regard as city centre property is a lot more expensive. Though it may appear that Downtown hotels do afford the luxury of being able to wander around the area for shopping and restaurants, etc. most of the Pyramid hotels offer free shuttle buses to allow you to do the same, plus taxis are not expensive and will still work out cheaper in the end.

What are the differences between Bed and Breakfast, half board, full board and all inclusive?

Bed and breakfast means that only breakfast is supplied. Half board means that breakfast and dinner are supplied Full board has all meals supplied (breakfast, lunch and dinner) All inclusive means that all meals and drinks are supplied; some hotels also supply alcohol. This latter point should be checked when making the booking.

Do I have to stay in my hotel after the day’s tour has ended?

No, definitely not, and we would encourage you to go out and enjoy the culture of Egypt. Many packages are full board, which tends to make people think they have to stay imprisoned in their hotel, but the sights and sounds of Cairo, especially, are too great to be missed. Why stay in the same hotel, with the same faces, when you could go out and have your dinner on a cruise boat sailing around Zamalek Island, accompanied by either a belly dancer or a Whirling Dervish; or sometimes both. This is your holiday, so enjoy every minute and get out and explore.

I have some expensive items which I do not want to leave lying in my room/cabin, what should I do?

All Hotels and Cruises have safety deposit boxes, sometimes even in your room/cabin. All you need do is ask at reception and they will give you instructions on how to use them, or will safely put away your valuables until you need them.

Where is the main bus depot in Cairo?

The main bus depot is called Cairo Gateway (El Torgoman) bus station and is situated just off the city centre. Any taxi will be able to take you there.

Where do I get the bus in Luxor?

The bus station in Luxor is situated behind the Luxor Temple.

Where do I get the bus in Hurghada?

The bus station is situated in Hurghada town centre.

Where do I get the bus in Sharm El-Sheikh?

The bus station is on the outskirts of the town on Freedom Road. You will require a taxi to get there, though many hotels do have shuttle buses which can do this.

Can I get tickets for the sleeper train service online and if not, how do I order them?

There is no online facility for this but you can order them by telephone. Call El Watania on +20225749474 or +20225749274, or fax them on +20225749074. You will be given a booking reference and you can pay and pick the tickets up at Cairo station at least 24 hours before departure.

How do I get from Hurghada to Aswan?

Many travel books mention the road and bus service between these two towns, but these are not advised for tourists and the buses will often refuse admittance. The advised route is to get the bus to Luxor and then the train to Aswan.

Can tourists use the Cairo/Luxor or Luxor/Cairo bus service?

Though these buses are air-conditioned and are good to use, tourists are advised not to and will be very lucky to either obtain a ticket or even be allowed to board the bus. This journey, for tourists, is restricted to trains or flight.

Can I just turn up at the bus station and buy a ticket?

You can, but you are advised to get your tickets at least 24 hours before travel, if possible. If you wait until the last minute you may find that you cannot get seats that are next to one another, or they may even be at separate ends of the bus. Not a good idea if you have children with you.

Can I hire a car in Cairo?

Car hire is available and many of the world’s major car hire companies are in Cairo. Car hire is NOT advised for those who have not been to Egypt before and therefore do not understand the level of driving employed by Egyptians.

Is it safe to drive in Egypt?

Unless you are used to the way that Egyptians drive, it is not advised to attempt this. Lane etiquette is unknown, cars will cut across you to make a turn, and the use of lights during the night is very seldom done. Though some road signs are in English and Arabic, the majority are in Arabic alone and there are simply not any good road maps, especially town ones.

I am on a tight budget so to save money is it okay to hitchhike between towns?

NO!! If you were to do this you could find yourself paying more for the ride than the fare by bus/train would have been.

Can I hire a bicycle to visit the West Bank at Luxor?

Yes, there are many places that will allow this but before you do so please remember a couple of very important things:

1/ as the day progresses so does the heat, so by the early afternoon it can be exceedingly uncomfortable. Do you really want to be cycling for miles in this, with very little chance of shade? This is especially important for children, who will tire a lot as the day progresses because of the heat.

2/ there are no cycle lanes and so you are sharing the roads with all other forms of vehicular traffic, which is not the best thing to experience. Many cyclists have been injured because of other road users not noticing them.

Can I get to Egypt by ferry boat from Europe?

Sadly the links between Alexandria (and Port Said) and other Mediterranean ports are not available right now due to the ongoing problems in Palestine and Israel. It is hoped that these will be resumed in the not too distant future. Commercial ferries are available, some of which carry passengers, but you would need to contact the relevant port authority for information on these.

How do I get to Abu Simbel?

Abu Simbel can be reached by flight, which is the easiest and most convenient method taking about 4 hours for the round trip and visit, or there are 2 police controlled bus convoys that leave Aswan at 0400 and 1130 that take about 9 hours for the round trip and visit.

Can I get to Esna or Kom Ombo without having to get a cruise?

You can visit either of these sites by taking the train, getting off at the relevant station and then getting a taxi, or by hiring a taxi or private driven car to take you to them (from Luxor or Aswan).

Can I get a cruise from Cairo to Luxor/Aswan?

Though movies like “Death on the Nile” show people using this cruise, it has not been possible to cover this route since the late 1990’s. Flight or train are the only ways to get from Cairo to Luxor or Aswan nowadays.

Can I go inside the Great Pyramid of Khufu (Cheops)?

Yes, but ticket sales for this are restricted to 300 people per day; 150 at 0800 and the other 150 at 1500. Tickets for this can only be bought at the main entrance, not the entrance close to the Sphinx. As tickets are sold on a first come, first served basis it is advised to get to the office as soon as possible as buses will arrive at opening times and they tend to get the majority of the tickets. If you can spare the time, try for the tickets in the morning, and if you are not successful you can be first in line for the afternoon tickets.

Can I go inside the Pyramids of Khafre (Chephren) and/or Menkaure (Mycerinus)?

There is no restriction on these sales but only one of them is open at a time, they are changed to allow for them to breathe, dispersing the high levels of carbon dioxide levels that tend to accumulate inside. Tickets are available at the main entrance to the site.

Can I take photographs inside the tombs?

No, photography inside tombs, including the pyramids and Abu Simbel, is strictly forbidden, which has led to all cameras being banned from the Valley of the Kings (you have to leave all cameras at the x-ray point at the second entrance). Excessive flash damages the paintwork inside the tombs and so, because of people who ignore the rules, measures have been implemented to safeguard these ancient works of art. The simple rule of thumb when visiting sites is: no cameras inside, cameras are okay outside.

I notice that the same sites seem to be repeated in every package tour program I see, are these the only sites available for tourists to see?

Though most companies will use the same sites for their packages, this is mainly because the majority of visitors are experiencing Egypt for the first time and so these are the “must see” sites. Egypt has literally hundreds of ancient sites which can be visited and it only takes a request for them to be explored.

Do I need to take anti-malaria tablets/injections?

NO!! Malaria has not been in Egypt for well over 85 years and there is no need for any type of anti-malaria medication. To be honest, it is quite the obverse as any types of anti-malaria medication can actually cause side effects that will simply ruin your holiday. Just because Egypt is in Africa does not mean malaria is here as well.

Can I bring prescribed medication with me?

Yes, but please ensure that you only bring enough for your stay, with just a few day’s extra supply as a back-up. It would also help if you could bring the prescription as well, as proof, or for topping up (there are many pharmacies in Egypt that can do this for you). If you happen to be travelling onwards from Egypt, and so have a lot more of your prescribed medicine with you, please ensure that you do have the prescription as proof.

Is it safe to drink the water in Egypt?

Yes, but not advised! Egyptian water has a high chlorine level in it which can upset the microbes in your stomach, causing diarrhoea. For drinking purposes it is far safer to stick with bottled water, ensuring the seal is intact before drinking it.

Is it safe to brush my teeth with tap water?

Egyptian water is highly chlorinated, not poisonous, and so it is perfectly safe to do this. You often swallow small amounts of water whilst in the shower, or swimming, and this causes no problems, so why should cleaning your teeth?

How should I dress for entering a mosque (male)?

Protocol does ask for men to wear long trousers as opposed to shorts, though Egyptians are used to the latter being worn and so say nothing, or little, if it occurs.

How should I dress for entering a mosque (female)?

Protocol does ask for women to cover bare skin as much as possible and so shoulders, especially, should be covered and a simple scarf will suffice. Again, it is advised to wear long trousers, or skirts, as legs should also be covered. Heads do not need to be covered, despite what some tourist books say, though it is a sign of respect if you do this.

What clothes should I wear on the cruise?

You may wear whatever you like on-board the cruise but you are asked to dress for dinner. Casual but neat is acceptable, you do not have to dress formally. Swimwear is not acceptable.

What clothes should I wear walking around towns?

When walking around the towns, dress as you would for a hot summer’s day back home. Shorts and t-shirts are actually worn by many locals.

What clothes should I wear when visiting sites?

This really depends on which site you are visiting and at what time of the day. Some offer little shade and so you should ensure that you do not have too much skin available for the sun to burn (the Giza Pyramids, in the afternoon, is a prime example of this). Temples are well shaded so you do not have to cover so much, but remember that even though they are shaded well, tombs tend to accumulate the heat from the sun as well as the many visitors, so try to wear something lightweight in them, especially cotton fabrics. Though many people like to wear open toed sandals, please note that many of the floors are exceedingly uneven and so it can be easy to stub your toes. Ladies, please do not wear high heels; not only can you easily break them, they can also become trapped between the large stones in flooring, and you will also find you will tend to slip and slide on the stone. High heels and sand are not the best partners either as the heels will sink in (you may laugh, but many ladies do insist in wearing high heels).

Is it safe for women to travel alone?

Many women travel alone and have found that they have been safe. The police, tourist police and army are always close by and the Egyptians themselves are generally safe and will try to protect solo travellers. On the whole, it is generally safer for a solo female traveller in Egypt than places like Greece, Italy or Spain.

Although the chances of being confronted are almost negligible, please ensure that you take the same precautions that you would anywhere else and do not be tempted to walk in deserted areas alone: get a taxi back to your abode! You may receive some invitations, which on the whole are innocent, do not accept any of these from strangers.

Do women have to cover arms/shoulders/legs when walking around the cities/towns?

This is a tourist book fallacy. Women walking around these towns can do so as if they were walking around their home towns in the summer. You will be amazed at how many of the local women dress like this as well, looking more like tourists than Egyptian.

Can I use my credit/debit cards easily?

Yes. Most places accept these nowadays, including all decent Hotels and Cruises. You are advised to carry cash when shopping in the many street markets (souks) though the larger malls, and street shops, can accept plastic.

Are there plenty of ATM’s?

Almost every bank has an ATM outside it, or just inside the front doors, and you will normally find that they are guarded by a policeman. Many shopping malls have stand-alone ATM’s and you can also find them located along a busy pavement (sidewalk), or where two busy pavements meet. Airports and railway stations also have ATM’s as do the larger tour company offices.

What voltage does Egypt have, and what kind of plugs?

Egypt has a voltage supply of 220V and the plugs are the 2 round pin type that are common throughout Europe (except the UK).

Can you purchase alcohol in Egypt?

Yes, alcohol is available in Egypt, either in the better hotels, higher class restaurants and cafes, pubs, and beer gardens. You will also find off licences as well. Please note though, it is illegal to drink alcohol in the streets in Egypt, so do not walk around with a can of your favourite tipple.

Are there restrictions about bringing alcohol into the country?

Yes, you are only allowed to bring in 2 litres with you.

What is the legal drinking age in Egypt?

The legal drinking age is 21.

What travelers are saying

"I cannot say enough good things about Odynovo, both on the coordination end (we worked with Laura Li, who was fantastic!) to the on-site people (shout out to our airport contact in Cairo Hassan, our skilled driver Ahmed, our fun Cairo guide Mai, and our knowledgable Aswan/Luxor guide Hazem - BEST crew EVER!!!) who make your trip a seamless, safe, exciting, educational, and all-around transformative life highlight. This experience was seriously a bucket-list one for my husband and me, and I can NOT emphasize enough how important the Odynovo team was to making Egypt an infinitely easier context to navigate. If you've watched travel vloggers and social media influencers attempt to navigate Egypt on their own and complain about a negative experience, fear not - if you go with Odynovo, every. single. thing. will be taken care of. There is NOTHING to worry about, and the experience was entirely positive. The people, the food, the culture, the historical sites and stories - with Odynovo taking care of all the logistical details, these are the only things you need to focus on. I am full of gratitude for the experience I had in Egypt, and I credit Odynovo for it. I will absolutely use them in the future for other destinations, and I urge you to do the same. I know my Egypt experience would not have been nearly the same had I not gone with Odynovo. Check out our adventure here: https://youtu.be/vMlAmVk7vBY Also, a passionate recommendation from my experience: DEFINITELY make the trip to Abu Simbel!! It was a major highlight (we went in a private car that left Aswan around 9am since we'd flown in from Cairo that morning). We stopped at the High Dam first, so by the time we arrived at Abu Simbel, the tour busses were on their way back to Aswan, and we had the whole of the site almost entirely to ourselves. It was one of the most awe-inspiring moments of my life. Do it. Stay the night in Abu Simbel if you can in order to avoid the crowds. It was amazing. ✨"

"We joined the Intrepid “Real Italy Food Tour” and enjoyed it thoroughly. Our tour guide, Micol, was very knowledgeable and provided us with lots of good information. It seems Micol knew many of the staff of the venues we visited, including the pasta making class we attended. Our group of 11 travelers was extremely compatible, which greatly added to the fun and enjoyment."

Egypt Tour Selection Trips

  • Remember to show respect for the local culture by covering shoulders and knees (a scarf can be very handy to cover up for mosques or temple visits)
  • Learn how to read numbers in Arabic to avoid being taken advantage of. As a tourist, you will most likely be quoted a heavily marked up price, so knowing what the actual written price is can help.
  • Tap water is not safe to drink - for this reason, salads are often best avoided in restaurants too.
  • Going on a guided tour often helps reduce any risk of getting sick from different food, but it is still wise to avoid street food.
  • Train trips from Cairo to the south are long and seats can be uncomfortable, so if your trip includes an overnight train, check if your tour company buys sleeper beds or seats if this is important to you.
  • Bus travel within Egypt covers a lot of ground, but stops are infrequent. So take advantage of the pit stops!
  • Swimming in the Nile is not advisable.

Additional details

Is it safe to travel to Egypt?

As of September 2021 - a  Level 3 Travel Advisory  has been in place by the US State Department. This advises "increased caution" when traveling to Egypt, as a result of certain terrorist activities and threats, and military activity on the border.

But what does this mean? It is advised that when you are visiting Egypt to remain cautious and aware of your surroundings at all times. It also means that the specified areas, e.g. the Sinai Peninsula and the borders, should be avoided. However, the Egyptian government emphasizes that all areas with a high concentration of tourism are heavily guarded to ensure your safety.

Yes, you can travel to Egypt , but there are certain precautions that you should take to keep yourself safe. The first is to know your country’s embassy location and number in case of an emergency which can be accessed through your country’s government website. You should also remain within the areas that are deemed safe.

Most government websites also provide a link to a site where you can input your information so you get messages from your embassy about safety conditions in the area. For visitors from the US, you can enroll in STEP (Smart Traveler Enrollment Program). Also, it is advised to remain away from any political protests or crowds.

Finally, we at Travelstride highly recommend booking a guided tour , rather than trying to navigate the foreign country yourself.

Guided Tours to Egypt

Guided tours are always advised. Because they are always well-informed and know how to avoid, as well as respond to dangerous situations, guided tours are the safest option for foreign travelers.

Certain areas in Egypt, like the Sinai Peninsula, have a higher risk of danger, and most to all tours do not visit these places. Before your trip to Egypt, you can always contact your tour company to see what specific precautions they take to ensure everyone’s safety.

What should women wear in Egypt?

Another common question that many people often ask before traveling to Egypt is, generally, what to wear?

A general rule of thumb for women should be to  dress conservatively . This means covering as much skin as you can -- your shoulders and legs, especially. When surrounded by other tourists, you will likely be able to wear whatever you want, but it is traveling in between these locations, or at night, that you may run into problems. Certain mosques will also require you to cover your arms and hair.

Here is a list of items every woman should pack when visiting Egypt (or any other conservative Muslim country):

  • Lightweight scarf : this scarf will be your best friend. You can wrap it over your head and shoulders when you need to enter a mosque without having to drag around an entirely new outfit.
  • Sunglasses: Making eye contact in Egypt is considered to be flirting, so these will help you avoid the gaze of any men who might call out to you. These will also be useful in general as Egypt is a sunny place!
  • Maxi skirt:  Maxi skirts made of lightweight, loosely-fitting material are a great way to avoid getting too hot.
  • Tunic shirt:  Wearing a cotton or linen tunic-style shirt is a great way to beat the heat  and make sure you're covering up. This style of shirt will not only be long enough to cover your hips if you are wearing skinny jeans, but they usually have high necklines and longer sleeves.

Travellers wander through the Luxor temples, Egypt

  • Best time to visit Egypt
  • Destination
  • Middle East

The  best time to visit Egypt is between October and April when daytime temperatures are comfortable and nights are cool, but you’re still guaranteed sun. The conditions are perfect for exploring chaotic Cairo or venturing into the desert.

As a mostly dry country, Egypt  is blessed with lots of sunshine and very little rain. The hottest months are June through August, and the coolest is January. Rainfall is almost non-existent, except on the coast – and when it does happen it’s between December and March. Highs can reach 40°C during summer, which can be quite demanding in crowded streets and souqs, but great for snorkelling off the beaches of Sinai.

Along with the weather, there’s a few other things to consider when planning an Egyptian adventure. Ultimately, the best time to visit depends on the experience you want, so we’ve put together this guide to help you.

Tailor-Made trips

When to beat the crowds (and the heat!)

Much like its north-African neighbor, Morocco , there's a surge in tourism between November and February when temps are cooler, so visiting in the spring (March/April) or autumn (September/October) is ideal if you want to dodge intense heat and large crowds. But when’s better – spring or autumn? If you can take your pick, autumn is generally better as spring brings the khamaseen – a hot sand wind occurring irregularly in the first half of the year. Don’t let that put you off, though! It’s not a constant sandstorm, but relatively short blasts that can last a few hours.

Can I visit Egypt during Ramadan?

As a predominantly Islamic country, Ramadan is one of the most significant events. Held over a month (the dates change each year), Ramadan is a time of spiritual rejuvenation. Fasting occurs from sunrise to sunset, and restaurants, cafes and markets may reduce their opening hours. Non-Muslims aren’t expected to observe the fast, but you should exercise common sense, like avoiding drinking and snacking in the street.

Despite a bit of disruption and a slower pace, it’s an eye-opening and fulfilling cultural experience. You’ll witness hundreds or thousands of worshippers visiting local mosques for evening prayers before taking to the streets to enjoy iftar (the breaking of the fast meal). You may also get to experience Eid al-Fitr, a lively three-day festival to celebrate the end of Ramadan.

When to visit to cruise the Nile

Travellers aboard a felucca on the River Nile in Egypt

Cruising the Nile means river breezes and cooler temperatures all year, right? Think again. Some places you’ll visit – like Luxor and Aswan – get mighty hot in the depths of summer, often topping 45°C (113°F)! Most cruise vessels are air-conditioned, but some old-school feluccas rely on mother nature’s air conditioning. Some high-end boats have pools, which is ideal for hot afternoons cruising past the sun-baked landscapes.

Consider the facilities on your boat and your tolerance to heat, but as a rule of thumb, spring and autumn provide the ideal temperatures to experience one of the world’s most iconic rivers.

Month-by-month guide

Best for: great weather and exploring the sites.

January is the ‘coolest’ month. Daytime highs linger in the low 20s and sunshine is plentiful, so it's an excellent time to explore ancient sites or peruse busy souks without melting in the heat. Evenings and early mornings can be chilly, so you’ll need a warm fleece and a scarf. Northern Egypt is usually cooler and storms occasionally hit the Sinai Peninsula, but it’s rare. Just note that January is the height of the peak season, so expect throngs of tourists and longer queues.

A traveller walking through the Karnak Temple Complex in Luxor, Egypt

Best for: comfortable temperatures, Abu Simbel Sun Festival

Great weather rolls into February, with slightly warmer temperatures when the sun goes down (though you’ll still need warm layers for the evening). It’s still swamped with tourists, but the weather lends itself to exploring the Pyramids and Luxor's Temples. February is one of the coldest months in Europe , so an Egypt trip could be the perfect way to get some winter sun!

If you time it well, you could align your trip with the Abu Simbel Sun Festival, a bi-annual event at the Temple of Ramses II on 22 February and October. The ancient architects of this incredible temple designed it so that for only two days, the sun would align perfectly to illuminate the temple's holiest (and usually dark) chambers. Join locals to celebrate with traditional Nubian dance, street food and live music outside the temple.

Best for: comfortable weather, thinning crowds

March is warmer than January and February, but not so hot that you’ll sweat buckets. As a shoulder month, you’ll have fewer tourists to share the wonders of Egypt's ruins with (and fewer floating heads in your selfies!). The khamaseen (a hot, dry wind) usually starts in March and can occasionally cause sandstorms. Bear in mind that it can get rather dusty and your travel plans may be disrupted, so be prepared to change your plans for a day or two.

Best for: dwindling crowds, enjoying the coast, Sham El-Nessim

While still considered spring, things start heating up in April, and you can expect daytime highs between a bearable 25 to 30℃. The khamaseen is still blowing, though it’s not as intense as March. With rising temps and crowds thinning out even more, it’s an ideal time to head for the coast to enjoy slightly quieter beaches and snorkelling.

You might also get to experience Sham El-Nessim which which is celebrated by all faiths in Egypt. Join locals to welcome the arrival of spring by feasting on salted fish, painting eggs and playing games along the Nile.

A group of travellers enjoying lunch on a felucca in Egypt

Best for: exploring Aswan, cruising the Nile

May sees hot, sunny days and balmy evenings. With the wind calming down and temperatures yet to peak, it’s a great month to head to Aswan – Egypt's southernmost city – to explore the beautiful Temple of Isis (the Goddess of health, marriage and wisdom) and learn about Nubian village life. From here, you can jump aboard a felucca (traditional Egyptian sailing boat) to sail down the iconic Nile. There aren't usually as many boats in the water in May, so you’ll get front-row seats to the sunset.

A camel standing on the sand with the Pyramids of Giza in the background

Best for: fewer tourists, enjoying the Red Sea coast

June marks the start of the sweltering summer heat. The sun can be oppressive during the day, with temperatures hitting 35 to 40℃. If you don’t mind waking up earlier to explore and getting sweaty, the upside is that there’ll be fewer tourists at the Pyramids, Valley of Kings and other famous landmarks. For a reprieve from the heat, head to the glittering waters of Hurghada on the Red Sea coast where you'll find slightly cooler temps and a light sea breeze – just be prepared for it to be busy.

Best for: Eid Al Adha, small crowds and minimal queues

Sweat-inducing temps continue in July, so perhaps steer clear if you don’t cope well with the heat. That being said, you may enjoy a July trip if you want to discover all the must-see sites which are usually swarming with tourists (it's one of the quietest months). It’s best to wake up early and make the most of the evenings when the temperature drops. July is also an interesting time to be in Egypt with Eid Al Adha (Feast of Sacrifice), a major four-day Islamic festival involving prayers and meat feasts.

Best for: history buffs wanting to soak up the magic of Egypt

August is hot (like, really hot), and so it's one of the quietest months. With practically no queues at all the landmarks and museums, you can take your time and don't need to worry about holding up the line when you get fixated on something fascinating (it'll happen a lot!). Just note that August is the peak season for domestic travellers, but they usually flock to the beaches and resorts along the coast.

A scenic view of a port in Hurghada, Egypt

Best for: diving and snorkelling, Coptic New Year, Milad un Nabi

The summer heat subsides in September (especially towards the end of the month), and domestic holidayers head home. Mid-September marks the start of the best snorkelling and diving conditions - head to the Red Sea Marine Park in Hurghada where you’ll have the opportunity to snorkel one of the most magnificent reefs.

It’s also a busy month in the events calendar with Muslims celebrating Milad un Nabi, a public holiday held in honour of the Prophet Mohammed’s birthday, and Christians celebrating Coptic New Year (celebration of martyrs).

Best for: snorkelling, cooler weather, Simbel Sun Festival, Siyaha Harvest Festival

Crowds begin arriving at the end of the month, but it’s not too packed. The southern regions might still be too hot for folks unaccustomed to the heat. For an immersive cultural experience, head to the Siwa Oasis in Siyaha for the full moon harvest festival where you'll witness dancing, chanting and a nighttime prayer circle. October also sees the second event of the bi-annual Abu Simbel Sun Festival at the Temple of Ramses.

Two travellers and an Intrepid leader walking through souks in Cairo, Egypt

Best for: snorkelling, Cairo International Film Festival, Arab Music Festival

Things are in full swing again now that the weather is more manageable. The conditions are perfect for long days exploring historic sites or getting lost in Cairo’s maze-like streets. It’s a bustling time to be in Egypt with the Cairo International Film Festival, attracting worldwide film lovers. Music buffs might also like the Arab Music Festival at the Cairo Opera House.

Best for: Nile cruises, a lively atmosphere, exploring in comfortable temps

December is one of the busiest months in Egypt. It’s not too hot during the day, nights are cool and the streets are buzzing. Despite the masses of tourists, there’s loads going on and transport and activities are generally more accessible than other times of the year. Whether you want to lounge on the beach, ride camels through the desert or cruise down the Nile, you can do it all in December.

Egypt’s Pivot Towards Sub-Saharan Africa And Strengthening Economic Ties

Panorama of Cairo

A notable shift seems to be taking place in Egypt’s economic strategy in a new era of collaboration with several regions in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA). And the country’s banks such as CIB (Commercial International Bank) are playing a part in this transformative journey.

“Kenya made sense. East Africa is close to Egypt, the language is similar, and Kenya is the gateway.  The Kenyan market is one of the most advanced digitally and digital is the perfect way to, with a controlled investment, grow a large footprint quickly,” says the bank’s Managing Director Hussein Majid Abaza.

In April 2020, CIB initially acquired a 51% stake in Kenya’s Mayfair Bank, subsequently completing the buyout in 2023 and rebranding it as CIB Kenya.

As Egypt remains resilient amid political unrest, security concerns, and fluctuating tourism numbers, CIB has maintained its annual growth.

The introduction of CIB Kenya could herald an era in which Egypt is seeking to foster trade partnerships. The bank’s niche lies in facilitating exports and it will seek to grow business links between the two countries such as with tea, where Egypt is the second-largest market for Kenyan tea exports.

Egypt’s commitment to the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) is also a pivotal move that aligns with the broader vision of a unified African market. After ratifying the AfCFTA protocol in 2019, Egypt, under President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi’s leadership, chaired the Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa (COMESA) from November 2021 to June 2023.

Trade liberalization initiatives and investment trade missions have underscored Egypt’s commitment to opening new markets on the continent. The country’s trade dynamics seem to show its resilience and adaptability, with the country emerging as a leading exporter to COMESA countries in 2022, reaching $3.4 billion.

“The continent is the right place to be; it is where growth is, and where growing populations are,” says Abaza.

CIB’s strategic foray into Kenya serves as a microcosm of Egypt’s larger ambitions for Africa. By leveraging its financial expertise towards new cross-border acquisitions, Egypt seems to be not only strengthening its economic ties with East Africa but also fostering innovation through the exchange of fintech ideas and talent through extensive banking analyst training programs in East Africa.

While Egypt’s influence within COMESA is expanding, these figures also underscore the vast potential for further development. In comparison to the global trade landscape, with the value of Egypt’s exports sitting at $51.6 billion in 2022, there is still considerable ground to cover in integrating SSA into Egypt’s global trade chain.
