Day 1 Cairns - Malanda

Tour Melbourne Image

Your journey begins on a high – literally – as you depart Cairns and weave north into the Atherton Tableland. There are lakes, record-breaking pines and Historic Village Herberton, a recreated tin mining town replete with shops and a pub.

Day 2 Malanda - Georgetown

All aboard the 1960s Savannahlander train as it tracks towards Einasleigh in the Wet Tropics. Order a cold one at the pub or visit Copperfield Gorge before the ‘silver bullet’ chugs toward Georgetown.

Day 3 Georgetown - Karumba

The aquatic jewel of the Gulf Savannah, Croydon’s Lake Belmore is the region’s largest body of water. Karumba sits at the mouth of the Norman River on the Gulf of Carpentaria; it's a twitcher's delight, as you’ll discover on a sunset cruise.

Day 4 Karumba

The Gulf of Carpentaria is a rare example of a shallow sea on top of a continent. It’s a unique marine ecosystem that fosters all manner of fish, as you’ll learn at the Les Wilson Barramundi Discovery Centre & Hatchery. Feeling thirsty? Enjoy happy hour at Point Sunset.

Day 5 Karumba - Normanton

Explorers Burke and Wills came through this part of Queensland while surveying the gulf. Campsite 119 was their most northerly post. They didn’t make it to Mutton Hole Wetlands Regional Park, but you will, with time for croc- and bird-watching.

Day 6 Normanton - Cobbold Gorge

When the journey matters just as much as the destination, jump aboard the historic Gulflander train. As locals like to say, “it travels from nowhere to nowhere”. But it sure is fun.

Day 7 Cobbold Gorge

This ancient geological landform is distinguished by its narrow, striated sandstone formations and humbling 10-metre cliffs. Cruising here, the only sounds you’ll hear are the wind and wildlife.

Day 8 Cobbold Gorge - Undara

Sleep in – we’re in no rush today. Forsayth for lunch, then campfire entertainment before retiring to your accommodation in antique railway carriages.

Day 9 Undara - Farewell from Cairns

The Undara Lava Tubes were carved by the world’s longest lava flow from a single volcano. Huge caves have formed along the tubes, creating a surreal underground world. Time to say see-you-later to the Savannah.

Please note: This itinerary may be subject to change.

Gulf Savannah Tour

We had a fantastic trip with John Warren as our guide and driver. John's commentary and explanation about the geology, flora and fauna of the Gulf land was superb and he also handed out literature regarding the above to read. Meals were great and the accommodations were excellent. We were fortunate enough to have great fellow travellers and the train rides on the Savannahlander and Gulflander were just great with friendly and knowledgeable drivers. Other highlights were the great staff at Adels Grove and the very knowledgeable Kane at Undara lava tubes. Also, a must do trip while these great trains are still in operation. Thank you Heritage Tours.

Thankyou for joining us on our Savannah tour. We are happy to hear that John was a wealth of knowledge about the area.

A 6 day accommodated tour made amazing by the organisational skills and friendly supportive approach of Chris our driver/guide. Everybody on the tour was made to feel part of the group and able to attempt any of the walks if they wanted to. If you opted out of anything Chris would ensure a shady place and refreshments occupied the break. Not all accommodation was 5 star but we were a long way from anywhere! Snacks and lunches provided out of the bus were plentiful and great social events. We returned exhausted but happy.

Thankyou for joining us on our tour to Cape York. It sounds like you had a great trip (even tho exhasuted) on your return to Cairns.

This was our 2nd trip with Heritage Tours & again it was a 1st class adventure. We were fortunate to again have Mark as our driver/tour leader which made for a wonderful experience. Mark is very knowledgeable (without overloading information) & has a tremendous passion for the area. He is an extremely careful driver, patient & caring to his clients. The trip covered some vast distances with varying spectacular scenery. There were ample comfort stops. There were many highlights including train experiences on the Savannahlander & Gulflander as well as Cobbold Gorge, Undara Lava Tubes, the oasis of Adel's Grove & Lawn Hill NP. A trip not to be missed

It was a pleasure having you on board again for your 2nd trip with Heritage and how lucky to have Mark our guide again. We are happy to hear you enjoyed all the spots.

I enjoyed the company of 14 great people on a 4wd bus camping tour to the Cape and.back. our drivers Brett and Mark were fabulous. Local guys with lots of local knowledge.

Thankyou for joining us on our Cape York tour with Brett and Mark.

It was my first time and hopefully not my last trip with Heritage tours. Mark, our fabulous tour leader, great safe driver, and so knowledgeable and passionate about the Gulf of Carpentaria. Visited some fabulous places Lawn Hill Gorge, Cobbold Gorge, Undarra. High standard of accommodation and delicious meals. We travelled in a 4 wheel drive truck, with comfy seats and great vision.

Thankyou for joining us on tour and we look forward to having you on tour again.

Thought it was expensive - not value for money. Destinations good. Fruitbat falls amazing. One guide- come -driver -come food preparer. Food from bus repititious & boring & often ran out. Seating on bus very squishy & even though there was a toilet on the bus we were discouraged from using it.

We are sorry to hear you didn't enjoy your tour to Cape York. We have taken your feedback onboard

Gulf Savannah Tour Details

This Gulf Savannah Tour was created due to requests from past clients who refused to travel with other providers!  The itinerary has been thoroughly researched and tested to bring you the best of the Northern Territory and Gulf Savannah!  We ran our inaugural tour in 2021 and it blew everyone away, including us!  It is a very unique itinerary visiting some of the most mind-blowing places in the Top End!

Departing from Cairns or Darwin, highlights include Kakadu & Litchfield National Park, The Lost City , Boodjamulla (Lawn Hill) National Park , Riversleigh Fossil Deposit , Burketown and the world famous Undara Lava Tubes !  There is a helicopter flight over wetlands plus another flight over Australia’s largest aggregate saltpans !  There are sunset dinner cruises , croc feeding, ancient landscapes and incredible wildlife to experience!

Departure & Return Locations

Cairns or Darwin

Price Includes

  • Tented accommodation
  • Breakfast, lunch & dinner, including 5 dinners out!
  • Sleeping equipment (tall tent, high density foam mattress, sheets/blanket, pillow)
  • 7 outsourced tours
  • All entrance fees to National Parks, ferries & camps
  • Customised experience of the Top End!

As inflation and the cost of goods and services increases, we have had to adjust our prices. We have always tried to keep our prices low for you, however, prices have risen across the board and we must keep up. Fuel prices have risen significantly, increasing the prices of food and other resources in remote areas due to freight costs. Many of our accommodation and tour providers have doubled, and sometimes tripled in price. Since 2023, all dinners out have also been included in your tour price.

We also pride ourselves in maintaining our vehicles impeccably and paying our guides well.  Our staff are up there with the highest paid tour guides & cooks in Australia. And despite what you may have heard, road conditions in Cape York and the Top End are as bad as they always have been, and there is still a LOT of bad dirt.

We have recently conducted research on all other companies going to Cape York (& a few Gulf Savannah), including motorbikes, tagalongs and tour trucks.  We found that we are still the best value in Cape York, whilst maintaining our 5-star rating.

We are just outlining this as we believe in being transparent and we hope you can appreciate the immense value of these remote, outback tours. We hope you will continue to support us, our staff and our dream.

  • One of the best tours we’ve seen, travelling through a huge range of spectacular scenery
  • The Incredible Kakadu & Litchfield National Park
  • Limmen NP & The Lost City
  • Boodjamulla (Lawn Hill) and kayaking up the gorge
  • Burketown flight over salt pans and sunset tour
  • Riversleigh Fossil Site

  • Matt Wright’s Top End Safari Camp house boat, air boat & helicopter ride plus croc feeding

What to expect

Cockatours is a family-owned business who aim to create unforgettable experiences for everyone. We would love to share our experience and knowledge of the remote top end of Australia with you and show you places, experiences and wildlife you never thought existed!  We run smaller tours with a maximum of 15 (Isuzu) or 19 (MAN) people so it still feels private and we expect everyone to be friendly, considerate and work together as a team to create a positive experience for all.

As a small business, we have the ability to be flexible and use this as an advantage for creating great experiences and adventures. Tours are subject to change due to weather, road conditions, unexpected circumstances and the guide’s decision to best suit the group.

If you decide to join us on an adventure, please note the following:

  • be prepared for true bush camps; some have no facilities – we have a bush toilet and shower for these occasions
  • some camp toilets can be a 100-200m walk from your tent
  • tented accommodation: light, easy to setup, 6ft tall
  • team work; everyone helps clean, cook, pack & set up
  • we offer amazing camping meals to suit large groups - our meals are raved about!
  • we have limited access to shops, services or phone reception (Cape York is mostly Telstra only)
  • our itinerary is a guideline. We may alter the tour throughout the season if we feel there is a better option or an activity is not worth your time
  • we have a great reputation to uphold and endeavour to provide an amazing tour every time!

Tour Specific Notes

  • Bring water bottles (or small backpacks with bladders) with a capacity up to 3L for some of the hikes. Staying hydrated in the tropics is critical to feeling good, avoiding headaches and enjoying your tour!
  • You must have hiking shoes (preferably with ankle support) for this tour. If you are an experienced hiker/bushwalker, go with what you normally wear and are comfortable with.
  • Please bring a head lamp with you. They will save you an enormous amount of angst at night time around camp. You will also need them for cave walks. We have a couple of models we recommend and stock in our ‘truck shop’ for $30-40. Clients in the past have replaced their BCF specials with these and been stoked with them. We make no profit on these, we just want our clients to fully enjoy their camping experience!
  • There are lots of walks on these tours. You never have to do a walk, however, to make the most of this trip, completing all (non-optional) walks is highly recommended. We would highly recommend a decent level of fitness or starting morning/afternoon walks at home before this tour commences. You should be able to walk at least 3km over uneven ground, with elevation change to make the most of this tour.

Your Guides

  • Rossy, Cockatours owner Rossy worked as an ecologist in Cape York for 6 years, helping Indigenous rangers from Coen and Aurukun manage their feral pig populations to improve the health of their country and wetlands and reduce sea turtle nest predation by feral pigs. For the past 5 years he has run tours in Cape York & the NT. He is a passionate photographer and offers lessons to help people learn how to use their camera and understand photography. He is passionate about reptiles and was once a snake catcher in Townsville, but these days prefers to take photos and reduce risk!
  • Our chef/cook for this trip will be announced closer to departure.

Rossy the Guide Next to cycad

Our tour truck, Zeus , has taken us on incredible adventures! He is currently still with us, but will be replaced with a newer model by 2025.

As an idea, our trucks are equipped with comfortable seating perfect for off-road driving, a good sound system and USB charging ports. The air-conditioning works extremely well and the tinted windows in the cab help keep the glare & heat out! Our trailer is our portable kitchen with even more storage which is perfect for any event; short/long term camping trips, weekend getaways, the list goes on!  There’s even a large awning for those rare rainy days!

On camping tours, we take a maximum of 15-19 people and there is a fridge for clients in the trailer for your own  drinks!

Camping Equipment

We are very particular about a few things that make a trip comfortable; good food and sleeping gear are two of those. We do our best to maintain our gear to a high standard and turn over our camping gear frequently.

Our single or duo tents are 6.5 ft high, very spacious and easy to put up. The fly can also be removed, making it a big mozzie dome, for those starry nights so you can watch the stars go over head!

The mattresses are high-quality, high-density dunlop foam mattresses that stack (not rollable) and are comfy! We have sheets and micro-fibre blankets (NO yucky sleeping bags) for bedding and a mattress case as well. The pillows are real pillows and are covered with hygienic pillow covers as well as a standard pillow case. We even supply bath mats for the front of your tent!  The chairs and mattresses vary between trucks due to storage space.
