Tour description

Discover three stunning destinations on a perfectly planned tuscany day trip from florence..

In just one day, you'll see, taste, and experience the best of Tuscany, complete with a homemade locally sourced lunch and expert-led wine tasting at a family-run farm in Chianti. We'll whisk you away to Siena and San Gimignano, two of the most stunning towns in Tuscany, helping you experience as much of this storied region as possible without you having to worry about the logistics. With a knowledgeable guide to lead the way as well as an experienced driver to get you from place to place, we've got all the details handled for an unforgettable Tuscany day trip from Florence.

See the best of Siena with the guidance of an expert in all things Tuscany.

Our day trip to Tuscany starts in the center of Florence, where you'll meet your expert guide, dedicated driver, and small group before boarding a comfortable, air-conditioned luxury vehicle. But before we set off into the rolling hills of Tuscany, we'll make a stop at Florence's best panoramic viewpoint for photos.

Your next stop will be eclectic, iconic Siena, which was miraculously spared from bombing during WWII—making it a pristine medieval gem in the midst of the Tuscan region. Stroll through the historic streets of the city center while your guide points out the most notable landmarks, including the famed Siena Cathedral and the location of the biannual Palio horserace.

Enjoy a gourmet lunch paired with impeccable wine on an authentic Chianti farm.

Of course, no Tuscany day trip from Florence is complete without a visit to the wine region! Chianti is a postcard-perfect area full of rolling hills and quaint farmhouses. As the lunch hour draws near, you'll take a tour of a family-run farm and winery, complete with sprawling vineyards and full wine cellars.

Time for lunch—and trust us, it won't disappoint. The menu varies seasonally, as Tuscan cuisine is famously linked to produce and uses only the freshest ingredients for the heartiest, most delicious dishes. Paired with a selection of the vineyard's very own wines, this is Italian food at its finest—and it's all included in the price of your tour.

Explore the UNESCO World Heritage town of San Gimignano.

With full bellies, we'll move on to the picturesque town of San Gimignano—so visually stunning and architecturally significant that it’s a UNESCO World Heritage Site. You'll enjoy a full tour of the town, then have a bit of free time to shop for local Italian specialties or climb the city’s campanile for one of the best views in Tuscany.

From start to finish, the emphasis of our Tuscany day trip from Florence is on indulgence. Indulge in stunning scenery, delicious wines, and lazy strolls on our all-inclusive Tuscan adventure. We’ve taken care of all the details so all you have to worry about is how much Chianti wine you can fit in your suitcase.

  • Duration: 8 hours
  • Departure: Hotel pickup included
  • Departure Time: 8:30 AM
  • Includes: English-speaking driver/guide, Private transport by sedan or minivan, visit to Siena and San Gimignano

First up, we have another 8-hour tour full of fun on the Tuscan countryside. The Tuscany Private Day Trip from Florence is a great way to see some of the most beautiful parts of Italy with a private tour so you get to see more. Prepare for a day of knowledge, experiences, and a lot of fun as you’ll head to various cultural stops!

Start off in the morning being picked up by your driver where you will head to Siena. It feels like a part of this area never quite left the medieval ages, and is charming in its own way.

Here, we recommend you enjoy lunch in at the Pizzicheria de Miccolil. It’s half-butcher shop, half-bistro so you know your food is fresh. Did we mention it also includes a cheese and wine cellar?

Salamis and hams are abundant here, and try their delicious house-made pizza! Siena is definitely one of the most beautiful towns in Tuscany. That’s saying a lot, considering we are talking about the culture-rich Italian countryside.

Next onto the walled town of San Gimignano. One of the oldest villages in Chianti, some say it was even where Amerigo Vespucci was born. The fortified medieval hamlet is truly breathtaking with its scenery and architecture, and is known for its wine where you’ll try plenty.

Here you can go to the famous Guardastelle Vineyard where you can take a tour and taste some fine Italian wines. If your still hungry or even if your not, have some cheese and appetizers as well. Or go for a full lunch!

When you are ready for some exploring, we recommend checking out La Rocca di Montestaffoli. This 14th century fortress offers amazing views of the town.

Don’t miss the Torre Grossa. This is an ancient skyscraper, the ancients built them as well! When you climb to the top, you will be met by spectacular views of the town below.

If you’re a wine lover or would simply like to explore more about this world, you’re on the right track. The From Florence: Tuscany Wine & Food Tour with Guide is a bit longer, clocking in at 8 hours.

However, you’ll have time to visit 3 different wine estates and get to try all kinds of wines, olive oil, and balsamic vinegar! Another massive bonus to this tour is that they operate with very small groups, only. This means that you won’t just be lost in the crowd.

You’ll have personalized attention and can ask your guide any questions you may have. Smaller groups also allow you to simply see more!

Start off your morning by meeting at Piazzale Montelungo, where you’ll be picked up by your air-conditioned vehicle.

With wi-fi on board, you never have to worry about being out of the loop. You can go “live” on your social media platforms, send videos and photos to friends and family, post about your tour, etc. without having to wait!

However, we’re sure you’ll want to live in the moment and enjoy the beautiful scenery around you, too. As you journey around, your driver/guide will tell you and your group all about the area’s history, wine production, and other interesting facts and anecdotes.

You’ll drive south from Florence and reach your first winery where you’ll enjoy some wine and a tasty traditional Tuscan lunch.

The second winery will teach you all about the winemaking process where you’ll visit their farm and learn about where their ingredients come from. Their wine expert won’t hesitate to share interesting facts and “secrets” about their products and will give you a full tour of the space.

Make sure to try their perfectly-sweet Vin Santo dessert wine while breathing in the fresh air of the undisturbed rolling hills. Then, head to Greve in Chianti, where you’ll have some time to walk around the lovely main square which has been significant in the local community for many years.

This van is climate-controlled, with a nice amount of space and comfortable seats. You’ll set off at 9:45 am, which means you still have some time to sleep in and enjoy breakfast before starting your tour.

Your first stop is San Gimignano, located in the Chiani countryside, which is what this area is renowned for. When you first arrive, you and your group will have time to stroll around at your own pace.

This really is one of the best ways to see it, as you’ll be able to see this charming town up close and be able to really appreciate the details, the friendly locals, and different shops.

After this, you’ll head to a wine tasting school (which everyone should be educated on!). Here, you’ll try 4 different wines, including the notorious Chianti Classico D.O.C.G., a Super Tuscan wine, a 30-year-old balsamic vinegar, and lush truffle extra virgin olive oil.

As you taste, a professional wine producer will teach you how to spot the different flavor profiles and help develop your skills.

Next, head to another local winery facing the gorgeous tower of San Gimignano. The winemakers really treat you like family, sharing secrets about their wine and oil, along with the best wine and oil pairings to take full advantage of these flavors.

After tastings, you’ll have the chance to purchase their wines at an affordable cost to enjoy at home or share with your friends and family.

Then, you’ll have more free time to wander around the little alleyways of San Gimignano with some of their world-famous gelato in hand!

Tuscany in One Day: Siena, San Gimignano, Pisa

Seeing all of Tuscany in one day is impossible. But what about seeing all of Tuscany’s highlights in one day? Now that’s a different story!

During our last trip to Florence, we decided to book the Best of Tuscany Tour with Walkabout Florence , to experience Tuscan culture, outside of the region’s capital city, in just one day. Let’s see how it went…

Landscape of green fields and trees under the blue skies. This beautiful view is one of our stops in Tuscany in one day.

Our Best of Tuscany Tour included stops in Siena, San Gimignano, Pisa, and an all-organic farm and winery where we savored an Italian feast of only the freshest ingredients — and of course, that was our favorite part.

While in Tuscany, you shouldn’t miss Siena, San Gimignano, or Pisa — even if you’re pressed for time. Let’s take a look at these three towns (and the farmhouse!), to see why Walkabout Florence considers them the “Best of Tuscany!”

Traditional brown buildings with red roofs in Siena

Upon arrival in Siena, we met up with a local Sienese guide, to learn all about Siena’s history, traditions, and culture. One tradition interested us most, though…

Siena is famous for the  Palio di Siena , in which each of the city’s 17  contrada (or districts) compete against each other in a bi-annual horse race in the city’s main piazza . The Palio di Siena has occurred since at least the 6th century, and it’s a unique event that you won’t find anywhere else in the world. The race takes place twice per year, on July 2nd and August 16th.

Old buildings lining the street of Siena. The Palio takes place in Siena which you can experience when you're in Tuscany in one day.

Palio fills the air with excitement and joy, and it’s infectious. People come from all over the globe to experience this medieval tradition, complete with a parade, horse-blessing ceremony, flag throwing, historical costumes, and of course, the horse race itself. It’s safe to say that for the entire city, and especially the winning contrada ,  Palio is a huge deal. And if you ask us, it’s also one for your bucket list.

During our visit to Siena, Palio was in full swing! The event is four days long (the race occurs on the fourth day), and we were lucky enough to be there for the horse-selection day. However, we didn’t stick around long, as we had three stops left and much more of Siena to see!

A street in Siena with buildings decorated with colorful flags. Siena is one of the most charming cities you'll discover in Tuscany in one day.

Aside from Palio , Siena itself is one of the most charming cities you’ll ever visit.

As you walk through the cobblestone streets of Siena, you’ll notice the brightly colored shutters, the centuries-old buildings, and a sense of extreme pride, which emanates from each Sienese local — not to mention the flags and decorations that signify each contrada as you walk through the city!

Duomo cathedral in Siena

Another highlight of Siena, is the Duomo , which is regarded as one of Italy’s best examples of a Romanesque-Gothic cathedral. It is a true Tuscan gem, a masterpiece, even.

Throughout our travels, we’ve visited dozens and dozens of cathedrals. Not many of them, however, compare to this one. Every surface of the Duomo di Siena , inside and out, is adorned with something intricate and dazzling, from the elegant paneled floor, to the green and white-striped pillars, to the library of frescos.

Everywhere you look, you’ll find works by world-renowned artists like Michelangelo, Donatello, Pinturicchio, and Pisano, and they’ll all truly blow you away.

Green fields of Fattoria Poggio Alloro - a gorgeous farm and winery we toured in Tuscany in one day

Fattoria Poggio Alloro

Fattoria Poggio Alloro is the gorgeous farm and winery we visited and toured for lunch, which lies just minutes outside of San Gimignano.

Before we feasted, we walked through the vineyards, learned about olive oil and wine-making processes, and savored the views of rolling hills, vineyards, and cypress trees, all under the hot Tuscan sun.

And then came the best part! Guys, is there anything in this world that’s better than a long, leisurely Italian lunch?

The menu consisted of olive oil, freshly baked bread, cured salami and prosciutto, local cheeses, garden salad, and fresh pasta Bolognese. Everything , save for the local cheeses, was produced on this family’s land, and it was all heavenly .

Holding up a glass of red wine with the farm on the background

But it even gets better. We also sampled three full bottles of wine, produced at that very vineyard: white wine, cabernet, and Chianti.

We ended up shipping home a case of wine, along with a big bottle of incredible extra-virgin olive oil that you simply can’t get back in the States. How can you resist that type of goodness? How?

To this day, and after three long trips to Italy, this experience is the one that sticks out most. So thank you for that, Walkabout Florence!

Holding up a cone of ice cream while touring Tuscany in one day

San Gimignano

There are so many reasons to visit the quaint medieval town of San Gimignano! But one of the most important reasons involves an Italian dietary staple: gelato.

Gelateria Dondoli , which stands proudly in the town’s main piazza , is a winner of the Gelato World Championship! Some say that Master Gelato Maker, Sergio Dondoli, makes the world’s best gelato ; and we can’t say we disagree!

This was our second visit to San Gimignano and Gelateria Dondoli, meaning that we’ve tried about 20 of Dondoli’s signature flavors. And as you can imagine, they’re all ridiculously delish!

Sergio Dondoli himself also often stands outside the shop, happily chatting with his customers as they wait in his long line — and that makes the experience all the better; he’s a total sweetheart.

Tall and old towers in Tuscany

As we wandered, we really felt like we’d gone back in time.

The trick to achieving this, though, is to stray from the main piazza and shopping street, which are congested with souvenir shops and tourists. This town is tiny, but it’s still possible to wander away from the center and find some alleys to wander in peace, to take in all of the little details.

View of the tower in San Gimignano as seen from the ground. Witness this centuries-old buildings when you tour Tuscany in one day.

In the short time we had in San Gimignano, we also climbed a few of the centuries-old towers for the most amazing views of Tuscany below. When I made it to the top, I really began to understand the phrase “breathtaking views.” Because it was hot outside, and there were so many steps to climb for those views… Duh!

No, not really.

Tuscany’s beauty is something else, and it absolutely steals your breath away. Especially when you’re experiencing it all from a medieval tower, inside a 13th-century walled city, on a gorgeous summer’s day.

I think we probably could have stayed in San Gimignano for a few hours more, simply to admire the stunning vistas. Yet, we had one more stop to make in Pisa, after taking a scenic route to get there…

The iconic Leaning Tower of Pisa surrounded by tourists

Pisa was our last stop! Because apparently, you can’t see the highlights of Tuscany, without stopping at the Leaning Tower of Pisa. After all, it is one of the world’s most famous monuments!

We had about an hour to explore Pisa on our own, allowing a chance to climb the tower, check out a museum, or grab a bite to eat.

After, we went on a quick guided tour to learn about Pisa’s history, before hopping back on the coach bus to Florence!

It was an exhausting day of exploring, but it was oh-so worth it to see the best of Tuscany in one day.

Old, brown buildings in Siena - one of the best places to see in Tuscany in one day

What to Pack for Italy

Depending on the season you visit will depend on the layers you need, summer is very warm but the winter is incredibly cold. Italy is very stylish and Italians famously dress well, so avoid white sneakers where possible and opt for a smart shoe or boot. Always have a beautiful coat in winter, it will hide anything less stylish you may be wearing as you explore in the colder months.

Here are a few top tips of what to wear:

  • Wool coat: During the colder months a beautiful wool coat is essential. You will fit in with the locals with this one .
  • Comfortable boots: As expected, you will do a lot of walking so opt for a comfortable but stylish boot that you’ve worn in. You can’t go wrong with a smart Chelsea boot, like these .
  • Floaty dress: In the summer opt for a long floaty dress so you know you are always prepared to enter religious sites. Bring a light scarf with you to cover your shoulders.
  • Sunscreen: Nothing spoils your trip (and your photos!) more than sunburn. Remember to prepare with a good, natural sunscreen and stay protected.
  • Reusable water bottle: Remember to keep hydrated during your tours, it can’t all be Aperol and coffee! Bring a reusable water bottle so you can keep topped up.
  • Travel insurance: As with all trips, it’s always best to purchase travel insurance so you know you are covered should anything go wrong.

Italy Quick Tips

  • HOTEL : I use this website for scoring amazing deals on accommodation worldwide.
  • HOSTELWORLD : If you’re traveling on a budget, this is the best website to score cheap hostel deals.
  • VACATION RENTAL : I use this site for finding the perfect vacation rental for an unforgettable getaway.
  • TRAVEL INSURANCE : Never go on a trip without travel insurance! It isn’t worth the risk if something goes wrong.
  • GUIDED TOURS & EXCURSIONS : Many of the tours I recommend are hosted with Viator, which also works with local tour operators. Search them all here .
  • CHEAP FLIGHTS : Get great deals on flights using my favorite flight fare aggregator .
  • TRAVEL GEAR : A collection of all of my must-have travel gear are all listed here . Most important to remember is comfortable shoes and a scarf to use when visiting religious sites or if it gets a little cold.
  • CAR RENTAL : If you need to rent a car book car rental in advance here for the best deals.

Have you visited Siena, San Gimignano, or Pisa before? Are any of these cities on your to-do list? Have you tried to tackle Tuscany in one day?

Here’s a fun fact… Duomo just means cathedral! So a lot of the cathedrals are called “Duomo di (something or other)” ;) Probably too much wine was drank… Like with every meal… and in between.

Desiree Moore – 20/12/2018

Our tour guide was excellent. We all agreed that her blend of information and warm personality helped to make our day the best of our 6 days in Italy. We greatly enjoyed her company. The geography is stunning, our lunch and hosts at the winery were flawless and of course, the towns we saw speak for themselves. This was the first time for 2 of our group to be traveling to Europe and the first time to Italy for all of us. We loved our day and I can’t think of one thing that any of the 4 of us said that we would change about it. Thanks for the experience

Jean Warriner – 20/12/2018

We just returned from Italy and I just wanted to follow up and say that we had a great “Best of Tuscany” tour.. We loved the small group size and the great selection of Tuscan towns, too. Our guide really gave us a very good tour, not wanting us to miss anything. He was informative, funny, and very pleasant to listen to. The tour of the winery and the lunch provided were both very well done too

Melissa Eikenberry – 20/12/2018

We had a great time on our tour of Tuscany! It was a highlight of our visit to Italy. Of course the scenery alone is worth the trip but we particularly enjoyed the visits to the two smaller towns. The tour of the winery was wonderful, we learned a lot! Also really enjoyed the opportunity to sample wines and food. Our tour guide was also very good. We really appreciated her commentary throughout the tour. She also helped us by recommending good local restaurants in Florence. We ate at two or three of her suggested places and they did not disappoint!

Richard and Sharon Zarek – 20/12/2018

It’s hard to say what we liked best. The whole tour was WONDERFUL. We especially enjoyed visiting and touring and EATING at the wonderful Tuscan farm we visited. That was a real highlight, thank you! And, we enjoyed Siena so much that we spent another 1.5 days there on our own. We certainly would contact you again if we have the wonderful fortune of returning to Italy. Tuscany was a favorite place. Thank you for helping to make our trip to Italy so memorable

Rita Kenny – 20/12/2018

A wonderful day, particularly the farm – a real insight to rural Tuscany life, we loved it! Thank you, Walking Tours of Florence your charm, humor and information.

Madeleine Haas – 20/12/2018

This tour has certainly lived up to its name, “The Best of Tuscany”.The rolling hills and pastel palette countryside will be forever a part of my wonderful memories of Italy. The food and wine at the farm topped off the experience. Our guide brought the medieval times to life with his vivid descriptions and knowledge. Thank you for an unforgettable experience!

Kirsten Ford – 16/04/2019

We had the most amazing day on our Best of Tuscany Small Group Tour. Incredible to experience such a wonderful slice of Tuscany – well organised, wonderfully knowledgable and lovely tour guide, amazing food and wine. And, of course, Tuscany was absolutely picture perfect! Thank you for a day which was a definite highlight of our time in Italy.

Kim Fulcher – 23/05/2019

Fantastic customer focus at every facet of this trip, from booking to pre-tour communication to our wonderful guide. Small group, interesting and knowledgeable commentary and just a general fun vibe made this the best tour I did in Italy. The guide was totally invested in everyone in the group getting the most out of the day and his warm and inclusive style broke the ice almost immediately. Lunch at the Palagetto was excellent with a tour of the winery included and the last stop of the day at San Gimignano meant an ice cream frim the “best gelato shop in the world” (if that’s not true it’s pretty close). I learned alot, laughed alot, ate alot and would highly recommend this tour to people wanting a personal and comfortable Tuscany experience. Worth every penny.

Jane Whitnell – 05/06/2019

We were a group of 5–several in the group are world wide travelers and somewhat hesitant about enlisting on this tour–by the end, we were all so happy, informed, and excited about our day. Our guide was so informative on the history and current day of the Best of Tuscany tour. She fit right in with us and is a fabulous asset to your business. She sent us on our way with several other restaurant and site recommendations. Marissa was the best guide ever!!

Charles Ponder – 05/06/2019

Artviva was a great choice for tours. The Tuscany tour was the highlight of the trip to Florence. The small group tour beats larger tours any day. Our guide was knowledgeable and friendly. Highly recommend this tour. Will use Artviva on future trips!

Great day with Amanda touring Tuscany. Very good mix of cultural and historic sites plus modern winemaking tour and lunch at Palagetto winery ( not a villa as listed in online info, but nice nonetheless).

S. Anderson – 23/07/2019

We did this as a private tour since we’re a family of 5 (kids 20, 18 & 15). Spent an amazing day with our guide Eleanora and excellent driver Florian seeing Siena, a neat small winery for a tasting, and San Gimignano. Picked up at our apartment in Florence in a nice clean Mercedes van, we headed to Siena, while Ella provided a great background of the area and it’s history en route. Ella studied in Siena and knew what highlights to see during our time there. Lunch and wine tasting at I Balzini were excellent. Spent some time with the owner/winemaker learning about his wine and got a tour of the grounds and bought a case which was promptly shipped back to the US. Ended the day walking thru San Gimingano. All said a great day spent with an excellent guide. Definitely recommend this and would do it again.

Don Rush – 22/08/2019

My family of five people took this tour in July 2019. To start, we loved our tour guide, Ella. It felt like we had a relative in Italy who was happy we decided to visit and wanted to show us all of the good things in Tuscany. She was very friendly and articulate. We enjoyed the lunch stop very much and the small towns along the way were something we never would have seen otherwise.

Alyson VanderToorn – 15/10/2019

Our tour of Tuscany was a wonderful day of exploring and eating, from sampling delicious ricciarelli cookies in Siena to the “best gelato in the world” in San Gimignano. The highlight was a tour of a winery followed by a “light lunch” paired with 6 wines! Our guide, Alessandro, was energetic and full of stories.

Cynthia and Steve Come – 16/10/2019

Easy to book and would recommend to anyone (well, not families with kids as I just don’t think young children would really get it). Enjoyed seeing highlight towns of Siena, San Gimignano, and Monteriggioni with a great driver to get us there and an awesome guide in Elanora to explain significant and interesting details. Highlight is lunch, wine, and olive oil tasting at Azienda Agricola Casamonti in Chianti. Delicious and educational. Not the least expensive tour, but worth every penny for this well-organized and hassle-free day.

Christopher Corsig – 16/10/2019

The tour was great. Ben, our guide was extremely knowledgeable about Tuscany, wine, food and the history the area. Well worth our time and we would recommend to all looking for a unique small group experience. The lunch and wine tasting was also excellent!

Catherine Antrim – 16/10/2019

It was great from beginning to end, just like our entire visit to your special Italy. The driver was experienced, friendly and knew the area well. Our guide was friendly, very knowledgeable and shared her love of the country Italy as well! Our stop at the vineyard was PERFECT and the guide there was fabulous ! Loved our small town visits, love the Tuscany region and the day was so special that we hope to return to Italy in the near future! I would definitely recommend this group and this great daytrip tour!

Mike Strange – 16/10/2019

This trip was from Florence and driver and guide were early to pick us up. Our guide was great! I can highly recommend Ben. He had a LOT of information about where we were going, lot of history of the area and had lived in Sienna, thus know a lot about the city and the culture. Lot of great information during the entire trip and he kept talking and answering questions as we drive from place to place. Really enjoyed this tour and ask for BEN!

MARY PRZYBYLSKI – 29/10/2019

There were 4 of us on this tour, parents and adult children. We all enjoyed the tour. Lunch at the winery was amazing (we all agreed). We all wish more time was allotted for Sienna. We liked the other towns but Sienna deserved more. Our guide was fun and knowledgable.

Gregory Karrip – 29/10/2019

It was the best tour to date. Our guide, Paul was outstanding, friendly, knowledgeable and flexible. We also thoroughly enjoyed our lunch and the tour. It was a perfect day, thank you! We will tell our friends who come to Italy.

Lisa Malachowsky – 31/10/2019

ArtViva was a new tour company to us recommended by folks we met at dinner in Florence. It did not disappoint. Our tour guide Ben was very knowledgeable and interesting. Almost everything relates to Dante somehow! The only thing missing was more information about olive harvesting to make olive oil.

Jamie Tharp – 04/11/2019

This tour was amazing. Amanda is a very excellent guide. The visit to each city was prefaced by a mini history lesson, explanations were detailed but not lengthy. The winery lunch and tour was fantastic even though it was after the harvest. Loved every minute!!

Victoria Sullivan – 05/11/2019

My mother, sister, and I had an absolutely lovely time on The Exclusive Original Best of Tuscany Tour. Our tour guide was Ben and he was terrific! Ben was very knowledgeable about Tuscany and had a great sense of humor. He picked us up in the morning in a private car and we started the tour in Siena. Siena is absolutely stunning and my only wish is that we would have had a lot more time there — we loved it! From there we quickly stopped in Monteriggioni which was very historic and interesting. We then had lunch at a winery near San Gimingnano which was lovely. The food was just okay, but we really enjoyed the winery itself and of course the variety of wine! We all purchased a few bottles of the red reserve. We had some time in San Gimingnano but thought it was a bit too touristy. Overall, we would certainly recommend this tour to others and we had a trip of a lifetime! Thank you, Ben and Artviva!!

Chelsea Babbert – 08/01/2020

I booked this tour on recommendation from a client of mine. I’m so glad I did!! Alex was the BEST guide of any tour we took during our trip. He was hilarious, very informative and made the whole day fun! We’re not big-group-tour people and were very happy when there were only two other people besides our driver, Michele and Alex for the day. It made the whole experience more personalized. I love Tuscany and we only had one day to experience the area on this trip-so this was perfect. I cannot recommend this tour and guide enough! We’ve told everyone back home about it! Thank you again, Michele and Alex!!

Susan Cosculluela – 12/12/2022

My husband and I took the tour with Ben and he was excellent! So knowledgeable and easy to travel with. It was raining in Siena but was still beautiful. Monteriggio is a cute stop also. We enjoyed the wine-tasting although might have like a little more food if is to be considered a lunch! Ended the day in San Gimignano which was perfect. Thanks Ben!

If you do nothing else, do this tour! This was my second time doing it, and I would do it again. Our tour guide, Alessandro was fantastic. His knowledge was amazing! Our driver Louiggi was the best! This was the highlight of our 10 day stay throughout Italy-and, we did a lot!

11 Tips for day trips from Florence

If you are in Florence, the capital of Tuscany, for a longer period of time, it is an absolute must to experience more of the unique Tuscan landscape. Drive from Florence through the hills of Tuscany or take an excursion or day trip . Visit the wine regions of the region. Let yourself be enchanted by the many cypress and olive trees along the way. Besides Florence, there are a number of cities to visit in Tuscany that should be on your list, like Pisa , Lucca , Siena and Arezzo. But also Venice can be visited from Florence, using the various high-speed trains in the direction of Trieste. The smaller towns in the area of Florence, such as Fiesole, San Gimignano and Certaldo are also more than worth a visit. Read more about the best Tuscany day trips from Florence :

1. Day trip to Pisa (83 km)

Day trip from Florence

Pisa is approximately 83 kilometers from Florence, known of course for the famous leaning tower of Pisa and one of the best day trips from Florence. From Florence you can visit Pisa by train, or even better with this guided day trip from Florence . In the Middle Ages, Pisa dominated the Mediterranean. The Duomo, Baptistery and Campanile were built in the twelfth century, thanks to the wealth gained. After the defeat by Genoa, Pisa's decline began. The Campo dei Miracoli is currently Pisa's most famous square, as it is home to both the Leaning Tower of Pisa and the Duomo plus Baptistery. Also visit Campostano, the cemetery, where you can see famous frescoes and where you can walk in one of the oldest botanical gardens in Europe. A little more towards the Arno you will find a museum in the former San Matteo monastery, which has also served as a prison. The museum displays a collection of Pisan and Florentine art from the twelfth to seventeenth century. Also visit the Palazzo dei Cavalieri, home of an institute of the University of Pisa. Finally, the Santa Maria della Spina is recommended. This church is full of gothic pinnacles and spiers.

My favourite Tuscany tour : If you only have time for one full day trip from Florence, I recommend this excellent excursion where you will visit the highlights of Pisa, Siena and San Gimignano in one day. The ideal way to get an impression of Tuscany!

More about Pisa

2. Tuscany excursion: visit the Chianti region

Chianti

On the way to Siena from Florence you will see all kinds of vines blooming along the Tuscan hills. These are the vines of the Chianti region. This famous Italian wine region has produced several good wines such as the Isole e Olena Chianti Classico. The Chianti region is a landscape rich in relief. In the west is part of the Apennines, namely the Monte dei Chianti. Furthermore you will find gently rolling hills characterized by olive groves, vineyards, forests and medieval villages. An example of such a village is Greve in Chianti , where you can visit the yellow Basilica Santa Croce, a statue of Giovanni da Verrazzano and a bronze statue by Igor Mitoraj. The village is famous for its strangely shaped piazzas and the market square. Also visit the most famous town in the region: Panzano . Here you will find a twelfth-century castle that played an important role in the fighting between Florence and Siena .

Tip 1 : Are you a wine lover and would you like to visit vineyards and taste different Chianti wines? Then this Chianti wine tour from Florence is highly recommended.

Tip 2 : Do you want to get a nice impression of the Chianti landscape in 1 day and also visit beautiful cities such as Siena, San Gimignano and Pisa? Then this day trip from Florence is my recommendation.

3. Fiesole (10 km)

Excursions around Florence

Fiesole is a town about ten kilometers from Firenze. It is located in the typical Tuscan hilly landscape. Fiesole was founded by the Etruscans in the seventh century BC. Until the rise of Florence, it was a prosperous and powerful city. The Duomo of Fiesole was built in 1028 with its impressive bell tower . The interior is quite austere, but behind the church you will find an archaeological site. There are remains of a Roman theater , Etruscan walls and a Bronze Age museum. You will also find a Franciscan monastery and a neoclassical church in Fiesole. If you drive to the small town of San Domenico , you can visit the church of the same name for frescoes by Fra Angelico Mary with angels and saints and The Crucifixion . Also nearby is the Romanesque church of Badia Fiesolana with a striped marble wall and an interior consisting of local gray sandstone, the so-called pietra serena.

Would you like to visit Fiesole? If you do not have your own transport, the hop-on-hop-off bus is by far the best option. Line B of this tourist bus will stop at a number of places in Fiesole.

Info bus to Fiesole

4. Best excursion from Florence: Siena (72 km)

Tuscany excursions

The city of Siena is located about eighty kilometers from Florence ( book your day trip from Florence ). Siena is best known for its annual Il Palio , the horse races that have been held since 1287 in Siena's most famous Piazza: Piazza del Campo . On this shell-shaped square you will also find the Palazzo Publico with the Torre del Mangia. You will also find the famous fountain Gaia here. When you say Siena , you also think of Siena’s Duomo and the Campanile that shape the skyline. The Santa Maria Assunta dates back to the twelfth century and is a sparkling example of Italian Gothic with its richly decorated façade. The Campanile is 77 meters high. When visiting Siena, check out the Basilica di San Domenico from the thirteenth to fifteenth centuries. The neo-gothic palace Palazzo Salimbeni, which now houses a bank, is also a sight in Siena, as is the national museum for works of art from the late Middle Ages and Renaissance.

5. Day trip to San Gimignano (56 km)

Tuscany Tours

The medieval town San Gimignano is located about sixty kilometers from Florence ( book your day trip from Florence ) San Gimignano is characterized by the thirteen towers that adorn the town. These towers date back to the twelfth and thirteenth centuries. They were founded by the noble families at the time when San Gimignano was quite prosperous due to the constant flow of pilgrims who passed through the town on their way to Rome . The plague epidemic and the diversion of the pilgrimage route put an end to this success. The old city has been preserved, but of the thirteen towers, only the Torre Grossa can be visited. You enter the tower through the Museo Civico. This museum is worth a visit anyway, as there are a number of famous frescoes on display and an inscription by the writer Dante, who once visited the town. Other places of interest are:

  • The Collegiata church, where you can admire frescoe
  • HThe Palazzo del Popolo
  • Via San Giovanni with shops full of local products
  • Piazza del Duomo
  • Piazza della Cisterna with the famous stone well

Book your day trip

6. Best of Tuscany: Lucca (81 km)

Lucca

The town of Lucca is about 81 kilometers from Florence . It is a pleasant place, which was founded as a Roman settlement in 180 BC. You can walk quietly on the original city walls . There are also quite a few churches that are worth a visit. Where once the Roman forum was, now stands for example the San Michele in Foro, a Pisan Romanesque church. Or visit Lucca's eleventh-century Duomo, the San Martino. This is another good example of the Pisan Romanesque style, which dominates Lucca . The Museo dell'Opera del Duomo is located next to the Duomo and displays Lucca's religious art treasures. Or go along the San Frediano, where the facade is decorated with a beautiful mosaic depicting the Ascension. Another attraction is the Amfiteatro. This is a well-known square in the shape of an amphitheater, where all kinds of nice restaurants and shops are now located.

7. Certaldo (40 km)

Certaldo

Certaldo is a place approximately forty kilometers from Florence . It is the birthplace of Boccaccio and famous for it's onions. Certaldo is close to San Gimignano, but is much more quiet than the medieval town. But no less beautiful. It is recommended to visit the old part of the city, Certaldo Alto . This is a medieval fortress located on a hill, which you can reach by funicolare or on foot. You will find Boccaccio all over the city. Boccaccio was a poet, author and renowned humanist who lived in the fourteenth century. He is buried in the church of Certaldo and here is a bust of the writer. Other sights include the Palazzo Pretorio from which the city was ruled for a long time, the Chiesa dei Santi Tomasso e Prospero where you can admire frescoes by Gozzoli and the museums Casa di Boccaccio and the Museo di Arte Sacra.

8. Monteriggioni (56 km)

Monteriggioni

Monteriggioni, about 55 kilometers from Florence ( book your day trip from Florence ). Monteriggioni is one of Italy's best preserved medieval fortifications . It was founded in the thirteenth century by order of the podesta of Siena as a protection against the Florentine threat. It was intended to protect the pilgrimage route from Western Europe to Rome . Monteriggioni is located on a hill and even today the city is surrounded by high city walls, two city gates and fourteen fortified towers. Places of interest are the large piazza with the Romanesque church, the Chiesa di Santa Maria, beautiful houses and shops where you can buy Castello di Monteriggioni wine. Today, the town is featured in the hit games Assassin's Creed II, Brotherhood and Revelations. In July there are the medieval festivals in which the city is decorated by hundreds of knights and princesses. There are knight fights and medieval dances to watch. The feast is accompanied by medieval culinary dishes.

9. Florence day trip: Cinque Terre (200 km)

The Cinque Terre is a national park on the Italian coast and consists of five picturesque villages, namely Monterosso al Mare, Vernazza, Corniglia, Manarola and Riomaggiore. The entire area is on the UNESCO World Heritage List and is known for the beautiful hiking trails that run between the villages. The part between Manarola and Riomaggiore is called Via dell'Amore. My personal favorite is the village of Vernazza with a picturesque fishing port. With this amazing day trip from Florence you can visit the Cinque Terre, one of the most beautiful coastal areas of Italy.

10. Arezzo (76 km)

tours in florence and tuscany

Arezzo is a city in Tuscany almost eighty kilometers from Florence and can also be easily reached in one hour by high-speed train. Founded by the Etruscans, Arezzo became the city of pottery and metalworking in Roman times. Arezzo is a city with many attractions, such as the joust of the Saracens on two Sundays a year. You can also visit a number of churches:

  • The Santa Maria della Pieve, a 12th century Romanesque church
  • The San Domenico a gothic church with a famous crucifix from Cimabue
  • Basilica di San Francesco with an important cycle of frescoes by Piero della Francesca
  • The Cathedral of Saint Donatius

You must also have seen the Piazza Grande and there are also two interesting museums: the Museo Archeologico and Museo d’Arte medievale e moderna. Names like Giorgio Vasari and Petrarca have produced this city.

11. Venice (2 hours by train)

Venice

Did you know that you can also take a day trip to Venice from Florence? The high-speed train departing from Santa Maria Novella will take you to the Venetian lagoon in just over two hours ( official website Trenitalia ). Go through the Venetian water streets in the famous gondolas. Buy a Venetian mask from one of the many handicraft stores. Visit Venice's most famous square, San Marco , with the famous Saint Mark's Basilica with its Byzantine appearance and marble and mosaic interior. San Marco is also home to the Palazzo Ducale, the palace of the Venetian doges. The Gothic Doge's Palace is one of the most important buildings in Venice that fulfilled a non-religious function. In San Marco's Square, you can also enter the campanile for a beautiful view over the lagoon. Don't worry: you can take the elevator up. Another well-known attraction is the Rialto bridge over the main canal of Venice where you can enjoy the beauty of Venice but also do some shopping in the shops on the bridge. But also visit the islands of Murano and Burano , which form a miniature Venice with their own many waterways.

Most were red wine (which I’m not a fan of, but actually very much enjoyed on this trip) but there were also a few white wines. Lunch was awesome. Personally, the trip was little long, so I would recommend doing the shorter trip (everyone started getting car sick to some degree with all of the hills). But, the tour guide did a great job and I would definitely recommend this activity.” Matalin ( read more reviews now )

“It was sensational. Fantastic guide, very good and comfortable transport. Short journey (45min) to the first winery and then the second is very close. Winery 1. Cheeses and breads with wonderful vinegars and oils + 4 wines (just the bottom of the glass). Winery 2. Cheeses, cold cuts and sausages, and bread + 5 wines (just the bottom of the glass). Possibility to buy wines, oils and vinegars on the tour. I thought the amount of wine was good, enough to make me neither sober nor drunk. I recommend going at the beginning of the trip, because if you make friends, they can be company for the next few days.” Rodrigo ( read more reviews now )

“Barbara and Armando executed their roles admirably, ensuring seamless coordination throughout the tour. Navigating three major cities and historic sites was a pleasure, thanks to their competence. Barbara, our patient tour guide, adeptly managed the challenges posed by tardy and irresponsible attendees, displaying a commendable level of professionalism. Despite a few hiccups caused by irresponsible passengers, all individuals eventually boarded, and the return journey transpired without incident. The experience, albeit dramatic at times, was salvaged by Barbara’s unwavering professionalism. The driver’s exceptional skills contributed to a smooth and enjoyable ride. On the downside, the light lunch provided fell short of expectations. Regrettably, it resembled more of a simple snack with a sample wine tasting, and did not meet our culinary preferences. Nevertheless, the overall value derived from the expenditure was undeniably worthwhile.” Sam ( read more reviews now )

Afterward, stop to admire some panoramic views of Chianti before heading to Siena. Here, your guide will introduce you to Piazza del Campo and the cathedral.

The David Statue

The Accademia Gallery is home to the world-famous David statue by Michelangelo. Standing 14 feet tall, the iconic marble statue depicts the biblical hero David before his battle with Goliath. The Accademia Gallery is the second-most popular museum in the city (behind the Uffizi), which sometimes means long lines for most visitors.

Fortunately, that won't be a problem for you! You'll be able to bypass the crowds with your guide and only enter a shorter security line. Short delays at the security check may occur during the busiest months of June and July.

Cathedral of Santa Maria Del Fiore (Florence Duomo)

Florence's colorful Duomo is the city's most iconic landmark. The Duomo, also known as Cathedral of Santa Maria Del Fiore, is a magnificent Gothic church adorned with an iconic red dome. You'll visit the Baptistry of St. John and the Florence bell tower, then see the famed bronze Baptistry Doors and learn about the amazing architecture as you gaze upon it from the piazza.

This tour gives you a comprehensive insight into the Florence Duomo from the outside. If you'd like a more in-depth Duomo experience, check out our Florence Duomo Tour and Dome Climb !

Discover Florentine Gelato

Did you know that Florence is the birthplace of gelato? On this walking tour, you'll pass by our favorite gelato shop in Florence where you can discover why it's one of the few authentic gelateria in Florence. Be sure to note where it is so you can come back later and try a few flavors. We like to get at least three because the flavors are out of this world!

Dante's District and Church

Your tour continues past the original house where Dante grew up, now converted into a museum. Plus, see the little church of Santa Margherita. It's said that this is where Dante and Beatrice fell in love. Dante writes about Beatrice in his most famous work, The Divine Comedy .

Piazza della Signoria and Palazzo Vecchio

Piazza della Signoria is the historical and cultural heart of Florence. The most prominent feature of the square is the Palazzo Vecchio, which is the former home of the Medici family and also the Florentine Republic’s administrative center. Learn about the incredible influence the Medici family wielded and their impact on the city's history and art.

The Jewelers on Ponte Vecchio Bridge

Ponte Vecchio means “old bridge” in Italian, and it's appropriately named. Merchant shops have lined this famed bridge since the 13th century. Originally, the shops included fishmongers, butchers, and tanners, however these particular goods caused such a stench in the area that Ferdinand I proclaimed in 1593 that only jewelers were allowed to sell on the bridge. You'll feel as if you've stepped back in time as you stroll around this historic part of Florence.

Your Florentine Lunch Break

Before setting off on the second part of your Florence in a day tour, you'll have time to buy lunch at one of the city's many restaurants and food stalls. Your guide will have plenty of recommendations to share, with Florentine cuisine widely regarded as some of the best in Italy! Learn about the history of trippa , a popular Florentine street food. Don't hesitate to buy some—you might be surprised at how good it is.

The Uffizi Gallery

As the most popular museum in Florence, the line to get inside the Uffizi Gallery can be extremely long at times. Not to worry though, you'll also enjoy skip-the-line access here so you guide can show you the iconic Renaissance artwork inside without the long wait. Your guide has a true expertise on the Uffizi's artwork and the stories behind it, so you'll also get a more informed and entertaining experience in this famous museum.

Once inside, visit some of the most celebrated works of art in the world, including Botticelli's Birth of Venus , which depicts the goddess Venus being carried ashore in a giant seashell. Caravaggio’s Medusa and Michelangelo’s Holy Family (or Doni Tondo ) are two of the other standout pieces on display here, but your guide will help you discover plenty of lesser-known gems too.

Best way see to Florence in a Day

I was very impressed with how The Tour Guy operates their tours and the knowledgeable tour guides that they hire. All the staff is very friendly and they speak English very well. It was nice to be guided around Florence's landmarks and get to skip the line to see David and Uffizi. Skipping the line saves a lot of time to be able to see everything when you have a short time in Florence.

Our tour guides (one for the morning and one in the afternoon) were terrific. Had we went by ourselves we would have been in and an out quickly and learned very little. They both brought so much knowledge and made the experience so much more interesting. I highly recommend this tour (if you're interested in art and history).

I really like the green scenery and I want to experience something similar to the movie under the Tuscan sun, but all I could find is the vineyard tours and wine tasting and I cant do that due to religious reasons

any recommendations ?

I agree if only a couple days you don't really have time. But if you have more, you could take a daytrip to Cortona where Under the Tuscan Sun was filmed. It is a bit long, but you can go by train and bus. There is also Siena, Pisa, Lucca...

Livorno Italy Port Guide

Livorno, Italy is one of the largest commercial ports of call along the Mediterranean Sea, a gateway to beautiful Tuscany or any number of Mediterranean cruises . On cruises to Livorno, Italy, be sure to explore La Venezia, a Venetian-style canal district in the historical center of the city dating back to the Medici era.

Tuscany itself is a destination like no other, boasting a seemingly-impossible mix of ancient and new, rolling hillsides and industrial skylines, the juxtaposition of slow living in remote fishing villages with the masterworks of Renaissance art and architecture you’ll find in Florence and Pisa.

Travelers can meander through Livorno for a taste of modern, coastal Tuscany before continuing on to destinations like Pisa, Lucca, Florence, Cinque Terre, and the vast Chianti wine region. On your Tuscany cruise, dock in Livorno and be in Florence in just two hours.

Only a little over an hour from the port of Livorno is Pisa, a highly-visited town known for its Gothic architecture, home to the vibrant University of Pisa, and of course, the Leaning Tower of Pisa, which remains famously tilted since construction finished in 1372.

On your Tuscany cruise, you’ll find the city’s reputation precedes it. Florence is the birthplace of the Renaissance, home to the largest Franciscan church in the world, the Basilica of Santa Croce, and one of the world’s most culturally, artistically, and intellectually significant cities.

Top sights & attractions for cruises to tuscany (livorno).

Florence, or Firenze, is a must-see destination for any art or history-lover while on your Tuscany cruise, and thankfully only a few hours away from the port of Livorno. Florence glows from afar with red brick, teeming with cathedrals. You’ll be in good company among paintings and sculptures by da Vinci, Botticelli, Brunelleschi, Michelangelo, and others. Spend full days exploring the Duomo Santa Maria del Fiore or taking in the masterpieces housed at the Uffizi Gallery. Stroll along the Arno River and the Ponte Vecchio, stopping into one of the many storefronts for a coffee or much-deserved gelato.

A short train ride from the port of Livorno is Pisa, known worldwide because of a certain leaning tower. The Leaning Tower of Pisa is just one of the four buildings that make up a cathedral complex called Campo dei Miracoli or Piazza dei Miracoli (the “Field of Miracles”), where striped marble overlooks a sprawling green lawn. Though Pisa suffered extensive damage during World War II, restoration efforts preserved many of its incredible sights. Now, Pisa is considered one of Tuscany’s university towns, an intellectual and architectural hub.

Cinque Terre

It’s no secret Cinque Terre is having a cultural moment—what once were five unnoticed fishing villages are now among Italy’s top sights. Cruises to Livorno, Italy provide easy access to this famous chain of villages. Since cars are banned, Cinque Terre’s curved paths and alleys are best explored on foot. Brightly colored homes, steep terraces overgrown with vineyards and flowers, and plentiful fishing harbors give Cinque Terre a remote, rustic feeling despite its recent boom in tourism.

Northwest of Florence and slightly north of Pisa, you’ll find Lucca, a perfect day-trip fortravelers who love historic piazzas and basilicas. Unlike Florence and other cities in Italy, Lucca preserved the walls protecting its historic city center, maintaining priceless artifacts from the Renaissance era. Walk along and admire the nearly complete footpaths as you plan your next stop to the botanic garden—the Orto Botanico Comunale di Lucca— or stop in one of its hundreds of churches.

Top things to do in tuscany (livorno), walk 463 steps to the top of the duomo.

The Cathedral di Santa Maria del Fiore, known as the Duomo, is instantly recognizable, designed unlike any other cathedral in the world. This massive Gothic cathedral was  built during the 14th century, and the red-tiled cupola was designed by Brunelleschi himself. The Duomo is described as a must-see by experts and travelers alike, and entrance to the church itself is free for everyone. Purchase a ticket to scale the dome or see the crypt.

See Michelangelo’s David at the Accademia Museum

Home to the original statue of Michelangelo’s David, it’s no surprise the Accademia is Florence’s most visited museum behind the Uffizi Gallery. Come for the David, stay for the extensive, unsurpassed collections of 15th and 16th century paintings.

Walk Across the Ponte Vecchio

The Ponte Vecchio, or Old Bridge, was the only bridge across the Arno River in Florence until 1218, and saw repeated destruction and damage throughout history. During World War II, it was the only bridge across the Arno that the Germans did not destroy completely. Don’t miss one of the most resilient sights in Florence.

Take a Boat Tour in Cinque Terre

Even after the cruise ship has docked, you can continue your nautical journey in Cinque Terre by taking a boat tour in a small gozzo boat, a traditional wooden boat that can hold up to six passengers. You’ll experience a view of the five fishing villages of colorful Cinque Terre unlike anything you’ve ever seen.

Stop Along the Beach in Monterosso

Monterosso al Mare is one of the five villages comprising Cinque Terre. Located in the province of La Spezia in Liguria, Monterosso possesses the largest stretch of beach of the five villages. Stop at the beach surrounding the village to eat fresh seafood from the coast. Monterosso is famous for its lemon trees and anchovies, so don’t miss the chance to try the acciughe di Monterosso, or anchovies, of the region.

Visit San Gimignano

Between Florence and Siena is a walled village called San Gimignano, known for its system of medieval towers, like Torre Grossa, built in 1310. Originally, the patrician families in San Gimignano built 72 tower houses to symbolize their status and wealth, but only 14 remain intact today. At the summit of these towers, travelers will see an impressive view of the city and Tuscany below.

Top Food and Drink Spots Near the Livorno Cruise Port

While on your Tuscany cruise, you won’t be surprised to learn the cornerstones of the region’s cuisine are pasta and pizza, and few places can do that better than Tuscany. In places like Florence, Livorno, and Pisa, you’re still close enough to the coast to experience incredible local seafood and wine from Tuscan vineyards. Coffee, gelato, and rich desserts are hallmarks daily life here, enjoyed for pleasure and ritual, rather than occasional treats.

Culture & History of the Livorno Cruise Port

Though Livorno may be a popular port city for passing through, its history is fascinating in its own right. During the sixteenth century, the Medici family contributed to the development of the sea post by ordering construction of new bastions and features to fortify the port. Many of these features are still in place today, giving Livorno the a rustic appearance but a modern, industrial spirit.

Each August, Livorno’s La Venezia quarter hosts its annual summer event: the Effetto Venezia, where families gather for music, theater, performances, crafts, and food. Effetto Venezia has showcased the culture of Livorno for over thirty years.

Livorno Port Facilities & Location

Most of the port area is industrialized, with ferries connecting the mainland to Corsica and Sardinia. The Livorno cruise terminal, called Alto Fondale, is mainly used by ferry passengers, and cruise ships often dock away from the cruise terminal building.

There is free WiFi in the terminal building, and you’ll find WiFi offered at many bars and restaurants. After leaving your ship, you will find shuttle buses and taxis are available to bring you to the Piazza Grande in the city center, and beyond.

Transportation in Livorno

To Get to Livorno’s City Center

In Livorno it’s fairly easy to get around on foot or via public transport. But, if you’re looking to visit to surrounding areas, public transport or a taxi are your best bet.

For those going to Pisa, Lucca, Florence, Cinque Terre, Chianti area, Siena or San Gimignano, it’s easy. You can book an organized tour to get you there.

To Get to Florence

There are several options available to get from Livorno to Florence:

Public Transport: There are 1-3 trains per hour from Livorno. Public transportation ranges from €10–€40 per person. While the train may be the cheapest option, you will have to travel from the ship to the Livorno Centrale train station. Take a 10-minute taxi ride to avoid an unwalkable path.

Private car/taxi (transfer only):  €40–€170 per person (90 minutes)

and Shore excursion

To Get to Pisa

There are trains every half hour from Livorno to Pisa Centrale station. Once there, you can also take a bus (“Torre”) to get to the Tower of Pisa.

Shopping Near the Livorno Cruise Port

Looking for souvenirs? Livorno has shops of all varieties and price points near Via Grande, which crosses the historical center of town and is accessible via shuttle bus from the port.

Find even more shopping in neighboring Florence or Pisa, where designer leather goods, silk scarves and ties, glass arts, and more gifts are widely available.

Local Currency & Tipping Customs

Italy’s currency is the Euro, and while credit cards tend to be accepted in most places, carry a little cash to cover a meal, a coffee, or a taxi ride should you need it. Tipping is not required at restaurants in Italy. Instead, there will be a 1-3 euro charge automatically added to your check called a “coperto,” which covers the tablecloth, silverware, and bread. Tipping cab drivers or hotel porters is not typical, but appreciated.

A 2-Day Florence Itinerary: The Best Way To Spend 48 Hours!

W e love the city of Florence. It’s one of the most enchanting, beautiful, and artfully rich cities in Italy and the perfect place to spend a couple of days before heading to the rolling hills of Tuscany.

We get a lot of people asking us about how to maximize their time in Florence, especially as they only have 2 days to spare.

I get it, with so many amazing cities and destinations in Italy to visit, sometimes our itineraries only allow a couple of days and it can be a hard task knowing how to fit all the top attractions and highlights in.

Don’t worry, you can see a lot of Florence on a 2 day trip, including some of the most iconic sites; The Statue of David, The Pitti Palace, and the Uffizi Gallery, to name a few.

If you’re not sure where to go and what to see in Florence over 48 hours, then don’t worry, as we’ve put together our best 2 day Florence itinerary so you can see the best of this amazing city.

Is 2 days enough for Florence?

Before I get into this 2 day itinerary, you might be wondering if two days are long enough to see Florence. Two days is the minimum amount of time you need in Florence to see the highlights, but ideally, the three days would be better.

The reason for this is that there are a lot of museums and art galleries in Florence that are worth seeing, and many of them take a few hours to get around.

The Uffizi Gallery, for example, is packed with some of the most renowned pieces of Renaissance paintings in the world. It’s a gallery you could spend a full day in, and not see it all.

In two days, you can still visit these museums and galleries, but your visit will be cut short. You could maximize your time by getting a guided tour or audio guide, but you still might feel that your visit is a bit rushed.

To make sure you make the most of a two-day trip to Florence, this guide will take you to the places in Florence I would suggest seeing, and in an order that allows you to make the most of your time.

If you follow this 2 day itinerary of Florence, you’ll get to see the main sites of Florence, such as the Duomo, Ponte Vecchio, and Gallerie Acadamia to see the Statue of David, as well as see some of the most vibrant neighborhoods to get a feel for local life in Florence.

If you have more time or plan to come back, then you can explore the same attractions we’ve mentioned below, but take your pace more leisurely so you can spend more time there!

The Best Florence Itinerary For 2 Days

The following itinerary is how I would suggest spending two days in Florence. It’s not set in stone, and you can take out places that don’t interest you or swap attractions around based on where you decide to stay.

Use it as a guide and adjust it to suit your needs, time frame, and budget.

The first day explores the Oltrarno Neighborhood. This is a bohemian, quirky neighborhood full of winding alleyways, quaint little coffee shops, boutique stores, and bars.

It’s where you’ll find many of Florence’s most iconic attractions, such as The Basilica di Santo Spirito and the Palazzo Pitti.

The Oltrarno neighborhood has culture, relaxing nature, and impressive historic monuments. You can read more about how to spend a day in the Oltrarno Neighborhood in our complete guide to the district .

The second day features the biggest attractions in Florence such as The Duomo and Uffizi Gallery on the other side of the river, which is the most touristic area.

You might want to swap the days around, depending on what you’re most excited to see. I really enjoyed visiting Oltrarno on our first day and seeing Florence from that perspective. I think if I did the other side first I would have been over and underwhelmed!

Stop 1: Boboli Gardens

If your first impression of Florence is that it’s a little more crowded and bustling than what you’re used to, then you might want to ease yourself into the Florentine way of life by visiting the relaxing and historic Boboli Gardens.

Located across the Arno River, the Giardino di Boboli is a beautiful, English-style garden on a hillside that was built by the Medici Family (you’ll hear a lot about them in Florence).

The gardens date back to 1418 but have evolved over the centuries by generations of the Medici family and the Savoy family, who bought it from the Medicis. The park is the finest example of Renaissance landscaping and features manicured lawns, ornately designed fountains, and tree-lined paths.

The relaxing ambiance and stillness are the perfect vibe to start your trip to Florence. We entered from the Piazzale di Porta Romana, the southernmost gate, so we could witness the Viottolone, a famous sloping pathway framed by cypress trees.

Even more beautiful was arriving at the top for views over Pitti Palace and Florence.

Stop 2: Villa Bardini Gardens

Just across from the Boboli Gardens are the Villa Bardini Gardens, which are much smaller but no less beautiful.

It’s a beautiful park to visit in the Spring and is full of colorful flowers and Renaissance architecture.

There’s a wonderful terrace bar at the top where you can catch amazing views of the city with a hot espresso, or an aperol spritz in the afternoon like we did, They even serve food here. It was one of my favorite views in Florence.

Right near here is also the Wisteria tunnel, which is beautiful to walk through. It’s super popular at the end of April when the wisteria is in full bloom. Imagine walking down this beautiful floral tunnel of violets and pinks with a fantastic panoramic view over the city.

Your ticket to the Boboli Gardens also gives you access to Villa Bardini Gardens.

Stop 3: Pitti Palace

The Pitti Palace, or Palazzo Pitti in Italian, is Florence’s largest palace that was once owned by the Medici family.

From the outside, it doesn’t look like much – the architecture doesn’t wow you as much as the other buildings in the city, but don’t let the facade fool you!

On our best of Florence walking tour and learned that Eleonora di Toledo, the Spanish wife of Cosimo I de Medici, bought the Pitti Palace because she found Palazzo Vecchio quite dull. So there must have been something about it that impressed her.

On the inside, it’s home to five different museums, including the Treasury of the Grand Dukes, the Palatine Gallery, the Imperial and Royal Apartments, and the Palatine Chapel on the ground floor.

Get your tickets in advance for Pitti Palace here .

Stop 4: Ponte Vecchio

Nothing says “I’ve been to Florence” more than a picture from the Ponte Vecchio, an iconic old bridge crossing the Arno River that was built during Roman times.

The Ponte Vecchio is unique in that it is made up of three segmental arches and lined with overhanging buildings.

The buildings were traditionally used as shops, such as butchers and other tradesmen, however today you will find merchants selling jewelers, artwork, and of course, souvenirs.

It was also one of the few bridges in Florence to survive the destruction caused by World War II because the retreating German army spared it because of its beauty.

Ponte Vecchio is a popular spot for a Florence sunset, if you can’t make it up to the best sunset spot (see below)

Stop 5: Tuscan Food & Wine Tour

Many of the sites mentioned in this itinerary so far you’ll pass by on a Tuscan Food and Wine Tour in Oltrarno , but this tour is not all about the sites – it’s about the food!

You might be thinking that food in Florence is your typical Italian cuisine of pizzas, pasta, and gelato, and while you can find this, there are some dishes that are unique to this region.

For example, Florence, and Tuscany in general for that matter, is well known for its wine and cheeses. Pecorino cheese is a famous cheese from this region that’s made of ewes milk and is creamy and delicious.

Another popular dish you should try is Florentine Steak, which is a staple dish in Florence. On a food and wine tour, you get to visit the best places in the city to try this dish, as well as learn about many other important cuisines in Florence.

Check rates and availability for our Oltrarno food and wine tour at sunset.

Stop 6: Sunset from Piazzale Michelangelo

After your walking food tour, you’ll likely want to find a nice place to sit and admire the views. There’s no better view of Florence than from Piazzale Michelangelo.

The Piazzale Michelangelo is a square that sits atop of a hill overlooking the Oltrarno district.

The walk up isn’t long, but it’s steep and may be a challenge for those who are unfit.

Those who make the effort though will be rewarded with the most famous sweeping views of the whole city which has been replicated several times in postcards.

If you don’t want to walk up the hill, another great sunset spot is the Ponte Vecchio, which lights up in soft hues of gold and orange during golden hour.

If you’re looking to add in some tasty treats while exploring Oltrarno, make these pit stops:

  • Coffee at Ditta Artigianale Riva d’Arno. It was our favorite in Florence (third wave style)
  • Gelato at Gelateria La Carraia . Our favorite gelato in on our Italy trip. Gelateria Artigianale La Sorbettiera is also good and has the original flavor. (Gelato originated in Florence)
  • Wine from the Babae Wine Window. Very touristy but Florence unique and fun.

Stop 1: Guided Walking Tour

If you want to learn more about the history, way of life for the locals, and culture of Florence, then the best way to do that is on a Florence Guided Walking Tour .

Walking tours take you to see the highlights of the city in a “whistle-stop” fashion, but they also allow you to skip the line to see some of the most famous attractions.

They are ideal for those visiting for a short time and don’t have time to spare queuing. You get skip-the-line access to see The Statue of David at Accademia Gallery, and it includes a climb to the top of the Duomo.

Here is the Best of Florence walking tour with David and the Duomo that we did. However, I recommend the VIP David & Duomo Tour: Early Accademia Tour & Skip the Line Dome Climb with Exclusive Terrace Access . We wanted to do this one so we could climb the Duomo, but it was booked out. So make sure you book in advance.

Stop 2: Accademia Gallery

If you skip the walking tour mentioned earlier, then you should at least make sure you go and see the iconic Statue of David at Accademia Gallery – it’s possibly the world’s most famous statue and a must-see for anyone visiting Florence, whether you’re an art lover or not.

There is nothing quite like seeing the statue up close. Its size, for one thing, is impressive. I didn’t realize it was 17 feet tall (5.17 meters)!

Up close, you can see every muscle, every vein, every curve of the body – the attention to detail is nothing short of breathtaking. It’s easy to see why it’s one of the world’s most famous works of art.

Get your timed ticket for this attraction here . Even though we were on a guided tour with skip the line privileges, we had to wait in line for about 30 minutes. Without a timed ticket, you’ll be waiting much longer.

Stop 3: The Duomo, Baptistry & Bell Tower

The most famous attraction in Florence is the Cathedral de Santa Maria del Fiore, more affectionately known as “The Duomo.”

This imposing structure dominates the skyline and would have been hard to miss if you followed the itinerary from yesterday and visited the Piazza Michaelangelo.

It was constructed in 1296 in a Gothic style but was only consecrated in 1436.

It’s most famous for its dome, known as Brunelleschi’s Dome, which has been decorated with fresco paintings and gilded details on the inside. If you opt to climb to the top of the Duomo you pass a balcony that gives you a closer look at the dome.

One of the main reasons to visit The Duomo is to climb the stairs to the top of the dome to see amazing city views. Fair warning though, if you’re afraid of heights, you’re not going to like this!

The viewing deck is quite skinny, and even though crowds are controlled, it does feel rather crowded up there. If climbing the dome is for you, then book your tickets in advance.

Alternatively, you can climb The Campanile, otherwise known as Giotto’s bell tower, just across the Piazza del Duomo. This requires you to hike up 414 stairs to get an incredible view, but if you have a fear of heights I found this viewpoint to be less scary to walk up.

However, if you only have time to climb one set of stairs, the view from the dome is much better.

Your entrance ticket to The Duomo also grants you access to The Baptistery, which dates back to the 11th century, making it one of the oldest buildings in Florence. It’s famous for its bronze doors, designed by Ghiberti’, and are affectionately called the “Gates of Paradise” (they are reproductions, the originals are in the Duomo Museum).

You can visit the Duomo for free, but lines can be long. If you want to skip these, then purchase a skip the line pass . Or arrive early instead and beat the lines that way!

Don’t forget to cover your shoulders and knees. If you forget, there is a hawker nearby ready to sell you a scarf!

Stop 4: Lunch at Central Markets

The Central Markets, also known as The Mercato Centrale, are the perfect place to stop for lunch. This historic market hall was built during the time of the Risanamento, the period when Florence was the capital of Italy in the late nineteenth century.

They are still used by the locals today who come here to shop for fresh produce of fish, meat, and vegetables.

On the top floor, there is a food court where you can find Tuscan and international dishes. The food court is made up of small, independently-owned restaurants, wine bars, and taprooms using fresh produce from the market to make excellent and affordable meals.

It’s a great place to grab a freshly made pizza or hearty sandwich. The food court is open from 10:00 am to midnight, so you can come back in the evening for dinner if you’re struggling to decide which restaurant to eat at.

We enjoyed our lunch here at the markets, but there wasn’t a lot of options if you’re gluten free. I was jealous I could not eat the cannolis and pastries tempting me from several stores. Savannah says, “deliziosa!”

Stop 5: Uffizi Gallery

If you’re coming to Florence to experience its historic art scene, you cannot skip the Uffizi Gallery. It’s the most renowned gallery in the city and where you can see original pieces from the 14th-century Renaissance period’s greatest artists, including Raphael, Botticelli, Giotto, Michelangelo, Leonardo da Vinci, Caravaggio, and more.

Some of the most notable pieces in the gallery are ‘The Birth of Venus’ and ‘Primavera’ by Sandro Botticelli, ‘The Venus of Urbino’ by Titian, ‘Medusa’ by Caravaggio, and a self-portrait of Raphael.

I would say that it’s the most important place in Italy for art, closely followed by maybe the Sistine Chapel in The Vatican or The Galleria Borghese in Rome.

As this is the most famous art gallery in the city, you must book your entrance pass in advance to avoid the queues and make sure you can gain entry when you want to, as tickets are often sold out on the day.

The pass allows you to skip the line, but you still need to pick up your ticket from the counter.

I will admit, I am really only interested in modern art galleries, and even then I don’t do much of them, but I really enjoyed Uffizi. I wasn’t expecting to and only squeezed it into our itinerary as I knew how big and important it was. I’m happy to report, it was so worth it. For us a quick tour through (about an hour) was plenty.

Stop 6: Piazza della Signoria

Piazza della Signoria is just outside the Uffizi Gallery and is a bustling square known for its beautiful statues and fountains.

The most famous of which is the Fountain of Neptune and a replica of the Statue of David.

Piazza della Signoria was once the political center of the city and was where the famous Bonfire of the Vanities was held.

It’s a great square to grab an espresso from one of the surrounding cafes and watch the tourists click away at their cameras.

Some food and drink suggestions for this day.

  • We loved the affordable and delicious dinner we had at Ostaria dei Centopoveri (popular with locals and students)
  • Two rooftop bars with views you’ll want to see: La Terrazza Rooftop Bar (small and busy so get here early) and the View on Art Cocktail Bar (spectacular views of the Duomo. Great at sunset. Again -super busy and service was very slow (European style)
  • Caffè Gilli  oldest cafe in city famous for espressos

Map of This 2 Day Itinerary for Florence

To help you navigate this 2 day Florence itinerary, here is a map of the attractions mentioned in this guide. I’ve also included other places to eat and drink that I discovered in Florence during my research that I was interested in! You can save a copy of the map and then edit as you see fit for your Florence visit.

Getting Around Florence

Getting around Florence is really easy as everything is within walking distance. Simply put on a comfortable pair of shoes and walk everywhere!

The roads are often cobbled and uneven though, so make sure you have flat shoes.

Otherwise, there is a bus system that connects the main city center to the suburban neighborhoods.

Where To Stay In Florence

We really enjoyed our stay at  Hotel Palazzo dal Borgo on the main tourist side of Florence  which we booked using points. It had a great location, a separate room for the girls, a canopied bed, and included breakfast in their beautiful courtyard garden.  See rates and availability. And you can see our Reel of it here .

Although, we didn’t stay there, I’d recommend people stay in the Oltrarno neighborhood when visiting Florence because it’s ideally located near the main attractions but without the noise and chaos of the main city center. We loved it there just like we did, Trastevere in Rome for similar reasons.

Friends have stayed at the Hotel David in Oltrarno and said it was an absolutely lovely hotel in a good location – close to the center but far enough so that you don’t get all the night-time noise.

The rooms are spacious and comfortable and come with WiFi, free parking, and a restaurant that has a gluten-free menu. It’s family-owned and operated, so you feel like they care for their guests and want to make you feel at home.

Best Time To Visit Florence

Florence is a city you can visit any time of the year since most of the attractions are indoors, however, if we had to pick a season, spring would be our favorite time to visit Florence. This is because the parks and gardens are awash in color as the flowers bloom and the grass shines in the soft due.

The summer is the peak season to visit Florence and is usually very hot and crowded.

The winter is a bit cold, but quiet, with fewer tourists visiting the city. The only downside to winter is that often it snows, which does add a certain beauty to the city, but makes flying in and out of the city a pain as flights are often canceled due to the snow.

Before You Go: Last Minute Tips For Visiting Florence

Lastly, before you go, I have just a few tips for visiting Florence to help you maximize your 2-day trip:

  • Wear comfy shoes. Walking is the optimal way to get around Florence so make sure you have a good pair of walking shoes.
  • Go rogue from this itinerary! One of the best ways to see a city is to simply walk around down random streets and experience the less-traveled paths.
  • Book your museum tickets in advance . The queues for tickets can be long! Save yourself some time and book in advance.
  • Try the wine! Don’t forget to stop into one (or a few) of the countless wine shops (enoteca) to find out what Tuscany is famous for!
  • Don’t go too wild on Espresso. The coffee in Italy is a lot stronger than what you might be used to back home, so if you’re not big on caffeine then don’t go too wild on this.
  • Download maps. It’s always a good idea to download an offline map, such as Google Maps or MapsMe in case your data is unreliable. You can download our map of this itinerary above.
  • Book small group walking tours directly through our preferred tour companies : LivTours , Walks of Italy , and Devour Food Tours . All have been tested and approved by yTravel!

Is it possible to do a day trip from Rome to Tuscany?

Here's how to visit Tuscany from Rome in a day © Cavan Images / Getty Images

Want to travel from Rome to Tuscany on a day trip? Lonely Planet writer, Paula Hardy, tells you how to make that happen.

Lonely Planet writer Paula Hardy has been traveling, researching and commissioning guides to Italy for 25 years, and she has contributed to guidebooks covering every Italian region. Last year she was back in Rome and Florence researching for new pocket guidebooks. Here, she answers a reader's question about how to take a day trip from Rome to Tuscany.

Question:  On my upcoming trip I'll be visiting Rome for the first time, but would love to see a bit more of Italy as well. Is it possible to take a day trip to Tuscany from Rome?

Answer: Yes, you can do a day trip from Rome to Tuscany , but be warned it will be a whistle-stop tour. After all, Tuscany is one of Italy’s blockbuster regions, stuffed with medieval towns, Renaissances art cities, historic country castles, world-class vineyards, gorgeous walking trails and unforgettable restaurants . It’s hard to experience all that in day. But if you’ve only got a day and want a little taste of Tuscany’s bella vita (good life), it can be done.

First things first, it’s good to get an understanding of what’s where and consider exactly what kind of experience you’d like. Is seeing Florence non-negotiable or do you want to get out into the countryside and sample some Tuscan wines? Or, would you rather visit unique medieval towns like San Gimignano and then linger over a long lunch instead? Or, do you want to see as many sights as possible and are happy with a picnic lunch en route? These preferences all dictate quite different trips.

A high-angle shot down towards a square with groups of tourists milling around

Rome to Tuscany by car

You can easily hire a car for a day in Rome and work out a self-drive tour, but bear in mind as a first-time visitor navigating will take you more time and as a driver you won’t get to enjoy the views out the window in the same way. Then there’s the eternal problem of parking in Tuscany’s tiny (and often pedestrianized) historic centers. Alternatively, you can book one of  RomeCabs varied itineraries. It offers a car and driver, but you’ll need to sort out and book your own lunch and you won’t have a tour guide – although an LP guidebook can help you there!

If you book onto a tour, you’ll be in a small group and will be riding in a minibus. When assessing itineraries bear in mind distances and traveling time. Pisa , with its famous Leaning Tower , and medieval Lucca with its historic walled center, are 4 hours and 370km (230 miles) away from Rome; Volterra , Italy’s oldest city, and lovely Renaissance Florence are 3.5 hours (280km/174 miles) away, as is San Gimignano with its sky-scraping towers. Terracotta-colored Siena is a smidge closer at 2 hours and 45 minutes (235km/146 miles), while the closest place of interest is the vineyard-clad hills of the Val d’Orcia with its famous wine towns of Montepulciano and Montalcino . They are 2.5 hours from Rome as is UNESCO-heritage site, Pienza, a perfectly preserved 15th-century Tuscan town that features heavily on most day trip tours.

If you’re envisioning lunch in a picturesque setting as a key part of your Tuscan dream, then opt for an itinerary around Pienza and the Val d’Orcia as this will give you enough time for a little cultural exploration in the morning, a leisurely lunch and then some afternoon wine tasting before returning to Rome.  Walks of Italy has a great itinerary that includes lunch at a family-run winery in Montepulciano.

Rome to Florence by train

If Florence is a must-see on your Tuscan tour, then look out for a mixed train-and-car trip. The high-speed  frecciarossa service from Rome to Florence takes just 1.5 hours, meaning you can be in the city by 9am, in time for coffee and croissant in art nouveau  Caffè Gilli . You’ll then head out into the countryside by car to visit either Siena, San Gimignano or the wine country of Chianti .  Italy on a Budget has a very well-priced tour that manages to cover all of them and includes lunch and a wine tasting.

If you can possibly spare another day for Tuscany, Florence with reward you amply. You’ll then have time to visit the spectacular Duomo , Michelangelo’s David and the Medici’s marble tombs . There’s also nothing better than toasting the sunset over the Arno River in rooftop bars like  SE.STO on Arno . While the evening can be spent sampling wine at the  Antinori palazzo or dining at exciting contemporary restaurants like  Gurdulù . Then you can head into the countryside the next day with Ariana at  KM Zero Tours . A Chianti native, she creates fantastic small group tours to local farms, cheesemakers and vineyards. If the years I’ve spent researching in Italy for Lonely Planet have taught me anything, it’s that taking more time always pays off.

An alternative day trip from Rome

Finally, I’d like to consider whether the main motivation behind your question is that you’d just like to venture outside Rome and see some of the fabled Italian countryside and perhaps you’re not wedded to Tuscany as the destination? If that’s the case, then perhaps you should consider a day tour to the borderlands between Umbria and Lazio (Rome’s wider region). The area has many of the same lovely features – rolling hills, ancient hilltop towns, and miles and miles of vineyards. It’s also much closer to Rome and within an easy 1.5-hour drive. Here you’ll find gorgeous Renaissance Orvieto , medieval Todi and Viterbo , stunning Civita Bagnoregio perched on its volcanic outcrop, and even the sunny shores of Lake Bolsena. Happy planning!
