The Short Answer

trek e bike throttle

Electric bike throttles allow riders to move forward without pedaling by twisting the throttle on the handlebars. Throttles come in different types, but their use is not always legal, so it’s important to check local laws.

E-bikes are more frequently seen on our roads and trails than ever before. Part of their appeal is the flexibility in how you get from A to B. You can pedal further for longer, or rely on the electric motor to support your pedalling.

Power usually comes via pedal assistance, or by the use of a throttle. Pedal assistance is perhaps better known to most e-bike newcomers ; so here we’ll take a look at the throttle system and what it’s good for.

What Does an E-Bike Throttle Do?

An e-bike throttle is almost the same as that on an electric scooter or motorcycle. It’s found on the handlebars. By turning the throttle from a standing position, the bike will move forward without the rider needing to pedal. This can be especially useful when you need to start your bicycle on a hill.

a throttle can move an e-bike forward without pedalling

Can You Ride an Electric Bike without Pedalling?

When you open the throttle of an e-bike, the motor delivers power without the need for pedalling. Examples include stationary road users pulling away from traffic lights. With quiet stealth, the cyclist on an e-bike can take off with no human effort apart from twisting the throttle.

Even though pedalling is not required, the pedals must be capable of being used and in good working order. Some e-bikes with pedal assistance also use a throttle.

What Speed Does an Electric Bike Throttle Do?

A throttle could technically enable you to legally reach speeds up to 28 miles per hour on public roads without pedalling, where throttles are permitted. However, this varies from model-to-model, with most electric bikes topping out at around 10mph when using only the throttle.

Do All Electric Bikes Have Throttles?

Throttles on electric bikes are not standard. In fact, they are not legal in some regions and countries. Where they are not legal, you will see more of the pedal assistance bikes, which operate the motor when your feet turn the cranks. Different countries and states see throttle use differently.

types of throttle

Types of Electric Bike Throttles

Electric bike throttles can give you the twist and go sensation like riding a motorbike but there are other types which provide the same function. We’ll look at some of these below.

Half-Twist Throttles

No, the half does not refer to only twisting half-way. The half-twist throttle only takes up half the space on your handlebars normally reserved for your grips. Don’t worry, you should still get the grips with the bike.

Half-grips usually operate with a twist of the wrist and control comes from the thumb and the first two fingers. Half-twist throttles help deal with the fatigue of extended use and also reduce the risk of accidental operation.

Thumb Throttle

Reducing things down to a small lever which pops out from the handlebar in the direction of the rider. Thumb throttles don’t get in the way of any of the other mechanisms on the handlebar. They operate by pressing the thumb.

They carry the least risk of accidental operation. They rely on pressure from the thumb to control the spring loading of the lever which means the chances of fatigue to that digit are really the only concern.

Trigger Throttle

The trigger throttle takes the thumb throttle principle on a couple of notches. Again, it’s operated with a small lever on the handlebars, but you squeeze towards you with the fingers rather than pressing with the thumbs.

pros of throttle

Do You Really Need a Throttle on an E-Bike?

Throttles can help in many situations which come down to choice and what you consider necessary. Sometimes we just don’t feel like pedalling – whether uphill or not. And some consider the ability to move away from a standing start quicker than you could under pedal power alone as an advantage.

There could be occasions where the pedal assist function alone is not enough to get you up really steep hills – a throttle could be a helpful assistant in these circumstances. Be wary that prolonged use of the throttle will affect the charge cycle of the battery.

Can You Add a Throttle to Any E-Bike?

If your e-bike comes with a working controller and a hub-mounted motor, in theory you could add a throttle to it. The controller unit will need to be able to accept a throttle. It will be complicated to add a throttle to a mid-drive motor because it relies on pedalling to spring into life.

You’ll need to think about complications such as the available space on the handlebars, the extra wiring, is the motor fit to work under the duress of providing power from a standing start, and of course, will your e-bike fall out of warranty if you add a throttle.

cons of throttle

Can You Have a Throttle on an Electric Bike (Is It Legal)?

Legislation around e-bikes can be confusing at the best of times. Maximum speeds and speedometers plus maximum power output of the motor fall within the law and you can add throttles to the list too. You should check your own laws and not rely on any seller information alone.

We will focus on the use of a throttle on public roads. Use of throttles on private land is not always subject to the same laws. We will also assume that all other aspects of the bike are legal – lights, brakes, battery plate etc.

Most throttle use in legislation is related to safety, speed and motor output power. You immediately enter motor vehicle territory once the bikes power and maximum unassisted speeds increase – limiting or prohibiting use on public roads and shared paths.

Electric Bike Throttle Law UK

Throttles in the UK as we have understood them for this post are not permitted without being classified as a motor bike. This means registration, number plates, tax and compulsory insurance and all users wearing a helmet.

All e-bikes – or Electrically Assisted Pedal Cycles (EAPC) must have pedals that work, a maximum continuous rated power of the electric motor not exceeding 250 Watts and a cut off when the bike reaches 15.5 miles per hour. This does tend to limit the legal boundaries of a throttle to some extent anyway – especially the top speed as we have seen that throttle powered e-bikes are capable of at least 33% more than that.

Of course, there are e-bikes available with more powerful motors than 250 Watts and speed assistance limited to above 15.5mph. These are categorised as speed pedelecs and subject to the same mandatory motorbike classification requirements.

‘Twist and Go’ type bikes that meet the GB standards for e-bikes are permitted. You can only have one on a bike bought in 2016 or later and if it assists the rider without pedalling only up to a maximum speed of 3.7 miles per hour.  If the rider is pedalling at the same time, the throttle can assist up to 15.5mph.  They are designed for those riders who have difficulty starting due to injury or disability. And all manufacturers must be approved by the government.

throttles on e-bike in the uk are not permitted to go above 3.7mph without pedalling

Electric Bike Throttle Law Europe

Although specific laws differ from state to state, the essence of throttle use on public roads is the same. The classification of an EAPC is the same as is the general classification of speed pedelecs. So, you’ll be riding a moped or motorised vehicle and all the hoops must be jumped through to ride legally.

Electric Bike Throttle Law USA

The federal legal definitions of an electric bike are broader in the USA. The pedals must be operable, the top speed for pedal assistance is limited to 20 miles per hour.

They also refer to a maximum power output of 750 Watts, rather than a continuous power output. State jurisdiction exists for using e-bikes on state roads.

Many states operate a three-tier system of rules and regulations which incorporate use of a throttle. Class I allows for a throttle but only to be engaged when a rider is pedalling.

Class II incorporates those throttle powered bikes which require no human assistance, again, limited to 20mph.

Class III moves you into the same territory as speed pedelecs in the UK and Europe. The throttle can take you to unassisted speeds up to 28mph and can be allowed on roads and on-road bike lanes.

Each state has the ultimate say on whether you can ride a Class III bike legally on their roads or not. Some states even say that a Class II bike is a motorised vehicle. You should check the law before you invest in a throttle for your e-bike.

Adding a Throttle to a Pedal Assist E-bike

I have a Hyper E-bike - bought from WalMart - that I love, but it is only Pedal Assist. I'm a reasonably good DIYer and I've done some research on throttles and have a question: Am I totally missing something or can I add a handlebar mounted 3-wire throttle - like this $14.73 universal one sold by WalMart @: https://www.walmart.com/ip/Thumb-Th...nJF8fPUmojUHsK1we2xoCaa4QAvD_BwE&gclsrc=aw.ds and simply splice the 3 wires from the throttle cable into the 3 wires coming out of the sensor that is activated by the magnetic disc when the crank arm is turned when pedaling? Seems to me that by splicing the throttle wires it would simply activate and bypass the sensor's signal to the controller and then on to the motor. Anybody tried this and know whether it would work or not...or worse, damage the controller and/or the motor?

A pedal assist input counts the electrical pulses produced by the pedal assist sensor, No, they are not compatible, so they cannot be interchanged. It may turn out that the controller in the Walmart Hyper has an unused throttle input inside it. This is not uncommon in inexpensive bikes. Sometimes, the clue is on the controller label, where it will list the throttle voltage. If you don't strike it lucky here, then you have to buy a a new controller. Fairly cheap. Best Class 2 Electric Bikes You Can Buy in 2024

best class 2 ebikes

A Class 2 e-bike is the only legal class of electric bike with throttle and pedal assist as a standard.

Using the throttle these bicycles can be fully electric or use a range of assistance modes that deliver varying power levels to support you up to 20mph. Once the bike reaches 20mph, the speedometer tells the motor to cut out until you fall below that speed again.

What to expect from a modern Class 2 eBike?

  • Convenient on hilly routes
  • Easy to use only the throttle
  • Powerful motor, generally a hub motor

The best bikes in this category have a good weight distribution of the heavier parts for better handling, powerful motors, large batteries, helpful accessories like an LCD control panel and integrated lights, and durable components.

Before you begin searching for a Class 2 bike, think of how you plan to ride or what you need the bike to function for (such as to replace your car), so you can choose a style that suits you.

Most Class 2 e-bikes are limited to 750W to comply with e-bike laws, however, the torque (Nm) is not regulated, and can significantly increase acceleration and performance on steep gradients.

What’s the difference between Class 1, Class 2, and Class 3 electric bikes?

  • Class 1 bikes are considered electric-assisted. They do not have a throttle meaning they require pedaling to activate the motor. The motor will stop assisting when you reach 20mph.
  • Class 2 e-bikes always have throttle and pedal assistance. These bikes can be used as fully electric bikes. They are also limited to 20mph when the motor stops assisting the rider.
  • Class 3 models may or may not have a throttle. Their max speed with pedal assistance is capped at 28mph (max speed with throttle assistance would be still 20mph), making them the most powerful type of e-bike, thus subject to more regulations, however, in most states, they are still considered bicycles.

What is a Class 4 electric bike?

Class 4 e-bikes are high-powered models with top speeds over 28mph. They are not permitted for use on any paths, trails, etc. They are limited to use on the road, such as with mopeds or scooters. This type of bike requires licensing and registration, as well as the use of a helmet.

What does an electric bike cost?

Electric bike price varies greatly between the class of bicycle, its function, the manufacturer’s name, and the overall quality of the build and components. Across our articles, we’ve reviewed e-bikes ranging from less than $1000 all the way to over $9000. However, the majority of e-bikes cost between $1000 and $4000.

I am a senior citizen, heavy and in relatively poor health. Is there a class 2 e bike that does not need to be shifted? Also, can seats be changed to a more comfortable seat?

Hi Cliff, all Class 2 e-bikes on this list allow you to ride with throttle only, which allows you to utilize all of the engine’s power without pedaling. Also, all seats can be easily changed to more comfortable seats, you can do it in any local bike shop.

I recommend choosing a bike with a low-step frame for ease of mounting and dismounting, such as RadRunner Plus or RadCity 5 Plus on this list. You can also check out our guide on the best e-bikes for seniors where we recommend more such models.

Thank you so much for your excellent review. You have mentioned some good points here. Looking forward to reading more from you.

You’re welcome, Nick! Thanks for reading!

Are really those bikes Class2? Ride1up is classified as class3 on their website (same for Avalon). Then I didn’t look at others on the list as already 2 models look like not class2.

Good point, Dimitri. We’ve listed bikes that can be used as Class 2 when using the throttle only. We’ll be updating an eBike Laws article soon where we could clarify that.

I really like the Ride1UP – 700 Series, but I think it is classified as a class 3 bike(unfortunately). Is this true?

700 series can be legally used as Class 2 eBike (when using the Throttle mode as the max speed is limited to 28mph), and as Class 3 eBike when using pedal-assist mode (Pedal-assist max speed is limited to 28mph. We’ll be updating our EBike laws post soon so stay tuned!

Trek Electric Bikes Review

trek e bike throttle

eBicycles score

In terms of principles, Trek is firmly grounded in producing bikes with high-quality craftsmanship, aiming to bring the joy of cycling to a broader audience. The fact that the company has four electric bikes speaks for itself.

Trek started back in 1976 as a subsidiary of Roth Corporation, an appliance distributor based in Milwaukee. The founders, Richard Burke and Bevil Hogg, began to manufacture steel touring frames with the aspiration to rival Japanese and Italian-made bicycles that were dominating the market at that time.

Just as its name suggests, Trek is fully committed to bringing its riders to great adventures and even promises to take them to the edge of the horizon.

It’s also fitting that their place of origin, Waterloo, is home to the Waterloo Driving Park Association, where spirited residents gather for some old-time tough and gritty bicycle racing.

Throughout its long history, Trek has been fueled by its determination to provide the best and the most rugged bicycles for the adventurous spirits that form part of their heritage.

Overview of Trek Electric Bikes

Overview of Trek Electric Bikes

Trek Bikes produce premium quality bikes all around the world.

Trek was founded with an established goal of building high-end bikes for the United States. Back in the day, all the good bikes came from European brands. This inspired Richard Burke and Bevil Hogg to take matters into their own hands. The solution? To make their own brand of bicycles.

Three years after its foundation, Trek sales came close to the $2,000,000-mark.

Now, Trek Bicycle Corporation is one of the world’s biggest bike companies.

The company offers models designed for Road, Mountain, and Urban biking. Trek is also renowned for making the bikes that Lance Armstrong rode to his number of victories in Tour De France.

In terms of their electric bike portfolio, Trek covers a wide range of frames, from amiable town bikes to more powerful road bikes and mountain bikes. Currently, the company sells 24 of these bikes with a price range between $1,500 to $12,000.

What We Like About Trek Electric Bikes

It is a given that Trek is very well-known when it comes to building bikes. However, this doesn’t mean that every giant company doesn’t have kinks in its armor.

This section will talk about the pros and cons of Trek e-bikes. Here to highlight the things we like about them and the points to consider before buying their e-bikes.

Reasons to buy:

  • Trek produces high-quality bikes that can handle any type of weather and terrain .
  • Most models are available in five different sizes for an optimal fit for each rider.
  • Aside from their magnificent designs, Trek bikes boast high-quality frames and components .
  • Massive collection of e-bikes span from hybrids, mountain bikes, and road bikes.
  • The Bosch motor boasts top-notch performance while keeping its size and weight minimum.

Reasons to avoid:

  • Some bicycles are overly expensive for an everyday e-bike.
  • Some key components don’t come with the complete bike and are sold separately .

Popular Trek E-Bike Models

The company has a ton of bicycles underneath its belt and a compelling product line, market value, and spec sheet.

Trek has been in the biking industry for a long time, but it didn’t hold back on innovating the e-bike scene. Here is a brief overview of Trek’s e-bike categories and what you can expect to see in each one.

Hybrid & Commuter Trek E-Bikes

trek city and urban electric bikes

If you’re looking to commute by e-bike, run errands around town, or just go for a leisurely ride with friends and family, Trek’s hybrid and commuter e-bikes are for you.

They’re split into three categories (City & Hybrid, Commuter, Recreational) and consist of multiple model lines:

  • Dual Sport+
  • Electra Go! E-Bikes

FX+ and Dual Sport+ model families are what you would call typical hybrid electric bikes with Class 1 speeds and rear hub motors. They are available with step-over and step-through frames and provide dynamic performance and upright riding positions.

Related post:  Trek Verve+ 2 Review

On the other hand, Verve+ and Allant+ model lines are better-equipped city commuter bikes that cost a bit more but offer more in terms of features and speeds. They consist of Class 1 and Class 3 models powered by mid-drive motors and equipped with lights, fenders, rear racks, and even suspension forks on some ebikes.

Finally, Trek also offers Electra Go! electric bikes (Trek’s sister company), which consist of mid-drive and rear-hub drive e-bikes that fall into cruiser, city, and urban categories.

Trek Mountain E-Bikes

trek mountain electric bike

Trek’s electric mountain bikes provide ‘endless adventure’, as Trek puts it. The category consists of hardtail and full-suspension mountain e-bikes that will fit all different types of riders.

The selection includes XC bikes, trail bikes, and even enduro bikes. There are four model families you can choose from:

All of Trek’s mountain e-bikes are powered by trail-tough Bosch mid-drive motors and integrated batteries with up to 625 Wh of capacity. They have Class 1 capabilities and the batteries typically last up to 5 hours of continuous use.

The only downside of Trek’s e-mountain bikes is the pricing, as they typically cost between $6,000 and $14,000, though the Powerfly models are priced in the $3,000-$4,000 range.

Shop Trek Mountain E-Bikes

Trek Road E-Bikes

trek road electric bikes

Finally, Trek makes some of the best electric road bikes on the market, but also some of the most expensive ones.

They are famous for providing a natural riding experience and only supplementing power instead of taking over. Therefore, you’ll be able to ride further and enjoy road biking just as you would on a traditional road bike.

Domane+ is the only model family in this category, though it comes in around a dozen variations, including road and gravel capable builds.

These are Class 1 and Class 3 capable e-bikes with Fazua Evation or TQ e-bike systems. All models are built around lightweight carbon frames, come with drop bars, 1x and 2x Shimano and SRAM drivetrains, and powerful hydraulic disc brakes.

Therefore, if you want to explore more or keep up on fast group rides, one of Trek’s road e-bikes is for you, if you can afford it.

Trek E-Bike Classes, Motors, and Batteries

Trek Bikes have high quality motors, suspension and steering

These bikes offer a lot of power and range from both their motor and battery.

The principle which the company is built upon is simple. That is to create a bicycle brand that is on par or even more significant than its European and Japanese counterparts back then. Now, they are one of the biggest bike companies in the whole world, so their grit and drive really paid off.

Trek is all about creating reliable bicycles that could take their customers to the next level of fun and enjoyment.

The company’s formula to success lies at their rigid standard of quality when it comes to their bikes. It ranges from steel, alloy, and carbon fiber, ensuring that it can take on any punishment it might receive when riding. They also didn’t hold back in choosing each component, as evidenced by their top-notch Bosch electric motors and Shimano parts.

When it comes to selling, the company won’t have any problems catering to your needs as they distribute their bicycles worldwide. What’s more? They even have 1,700 dealers in the U.S. alone. Their website also allows you to see the store closest to you, where you can view, test, and purchase their bikes.

Reliability and Durability

Trek Bikes Reliability and Durability

Trek Bikes use only the best quality materials so that their products can handle extreme terrains and any kind of weather.

Trek began with a vision from the two founders to build the best bicycles that the world had ever witnessed.

Thus, the company’s strict observance of the highest possible craftsmanship quality was born.

The company’s collection of bicycles typically receive rave reviews for their build quality. This applies to even their entry-level bikes, which at the price tag they’re sold at, isn’t always known to have the most premium components. Even if their price range generally makes their bikes a luxury, everything about it feels premium and durable when you get your hands on it.

As a testament to their bike’s quality, one Quora user shared that he almost managed to travel across Canada by riding an entry-level 1993 Trek 820 Antelope. This devotion to their founder’s vision endeared many cycling enthusiasts to the company and brand.

Electric bikes reduce car congestion, get you moving, and reduce your carbon footprint. Also, they’re just really fun. I’ve never met anyone who has tried an electric bike and not wanted one; in the Netherlands, ebikes currently outsell regular bikes . However, that four-figure price tag induces sticker shock. Many states are considering incentive programs , but how does that help you if you want or need an ebike now ?

Many factors drive up the price of an ebike, including expensive components, sophisticated computers, big batteries, and fancy frames. Thankfully, a handful of direct-to-consumer companies are making affordable ebikes so everyone can participate in the fun. Below, you'll find the best cheap ebikes we tested. Got a bike we should know about? Leave a comment! Don’t forget to check out our Best Electric Bikes , Best Family Bikes , and Best Bike Accessories guides for more recommendations.

Best Overall

I've only been riding the 9S Pro V2 for a short time, but we've tested enough Propella bikes that I can confidently recommend this one as the best for most people. At 43.5 pounds with an aluminum frame, it's light enough for me, a smaller person, to lift out of the bike box and assemble without requiring a forklift. It comes about 85 percent assembled, so I can put it together in about 15 minutes. (The company suggests going to a shop if you don't feel comfortable.) It's a class 1 ebike , which means it assists up to 20 mph and it doesn't have a throttle, so you will have to pedal and shift through each of the 9 gears. The display is tiny but bright and intuitive. It's easy to navigate while riding, with just a button on the top and the side to turn it on, and a simple thumb toggle to scroll through 5 assist levels. This is Propella's second version of this bike, which is now lighter and has a torque sensor so that the assistance feels even more natural. I also particularly like the clean frame with the integrated battery, which makes it less of a target for thieves; however, if you want a removable battery because you lock your bike up in a garage, Propella also still sells its cheaper 7-speed . This is the best first bike for everyone who already likes bikes and just wants a little boost to make it the last few miles home.

This Aventon is a pleasure to pedal, and you should plan on spinning your feet on this sleek ebike. Like on the Propella, the rear motor puts out just 350 watts, meaning you’re not going to zoom fast by just using the throttle button. The battery—which is so thin and discreet that many won’t notice it’s there—holds just 9.6 amp hours, meaning you won’t zoom far, either. This second-generation Soltera also now has a new torque sensor, which performed flawlessly in our testing and mostly eliminated that jerkiness when cheap electric motors offer imperfectly calibrated assistance.

At 46 pounds, it's slightly heavier than the Propella 9S Pro V2, but it still maneuvers better than many budget ebikes we’ve tried. The components all feel solid if not bombproof, and this bike’s great looks and performance on pedal assist mean it’s ideally suited to keeping up with a crowd of fit cyclists even if you’re a schlub. —Martin Cizmar

The Best Name-Brand Bike

Enough friends have asked me to help them assemble their new ebike that I now recommend that everyone go to a shop. Going to a shop in person means you can try a bunch of bikes to find out what style you like and get sized properly. Shops usually include free assembly and a service program for 30 days or a year, so you don't have to tinker in your driveway or garage. If you're the kind of person who would pay an extra $250 for assembly from a company like Velofix, then going to a shop is worth it.

We've had great experiences with Cannondale's Adventure Neo line ( 8/10, WIRED Recommends ). With the latest Adventure Neo Allroad, Cannondale has switched out some of the components to make the bike more accessible. It has a 250-watt Bafang motor with a Bafang sensor and a thumb throttle, which makes it a class 2 ebike , even though it tops out at 20 mph assist. It's essentially a Rad Power Bike (see below) you can have assembled and tuned for you in a shop, but it's versatile and nimble on both roads, trails, and gravel, and small enough to fit my 5'2" height. I rode this for over a week on roads and dirt and gravel paths near my house. It's not the most powerful bike I've tested, but it's a perfectly serviceable bike that did get me up the 15 percent hill I've nicknamed Battery Killer.

A Fully Loaded Ebike

Changing your lifestyle from a car-oriented one to a bike-oriented one can be a big transition. An ebike isn't going to change your life if it spends most of its time in your garage because you forgot to buy lights or you don't feel safe riding it around. At 77 pounds, the Heybike Tyson ( 6/10, WIRED Review ) is incredibly heavy, and some of the components are fragile—I did crack the screen after I accidentally knocked it over from a standstill in my garage.

However, if you want to try out an ebike lifestyle in a super fast, comfortable, and convenient way, I still say this is a decent pick. In addition to an enormously powerful 750-watt motor, this class 3 ebike has dual suspension, enormous tires, and a plush seat for a comfy ride. It also has the most extensive ebike dashboard I've ever seen, with turn signals, multiple buttons, and a throttle. A proprietary app also tells you the bike's location and warns you if it's been stolen. The battery range is less than advertised, especially if you lean heavily on the throttle. Still, it's a good-looking bike that will have you riding at night and in the rain in no time. (You will still have to buy an additional lock though.)

The Best Utility Bike

The RadRunner is Seattle-based Rad Power Bikes' flagship utility bike; I tried the first version , and WIRED commerce director Martin Cizmar tested the RadRunner 3 Plus ($2,099) . The company also sells a RadRunner Plus ($1,799) . The Plus denotes the tricked-out version with the passenger package and wheel guards; the third version has a few upgrades, like a slightly more powerful motor and the newer battery style that is integrated into the downtube. We have to note here that Rad Power was the focus of several lawsuits for a few years; however, these latest bikes are UL-certified.

Overall, the RadRunner series is one of the most common direct-to-consumer ebikes I see in my hometown of Portland, Oregon. The RadRunner 2 is a class 2 ebike , and Cizmar notes the bike feels burly and stable enough to support the weight of a grade schooler on the back seat. Rad's signature lights are blindingly bright, and the knobby tires and suspension are great for rougher city sidewalks or hopping low curbs. It's a little difficult to lock up at the thicker part of the frame, but the bike's design includes thinner tubes that will work.

Best Folding Bike

I've had a hit-or-miss track record testing Gotrax's electric kick scooters , but I'm pretty happy with its F2 electric bike. Considering the sub-$1,000 price, this fat-tire ebike had enough range to take me from Bed-Stuy, Brooklyn, to Pier 57 in Manhattan, a roughly 20-mile round trip with some pit stops, and it had juice to spare. (I tested the original F2 , but a new “V2” model adds slight improvements , like a stronger rear rack, hydraulic brakes, and a comfier seat.) At 58 pounds, it's not as lightweight as the Lectric XP Lite (which costs $799), but it can go farther. The thick tires make bumps on the road a piece of cake. It has a 500-watt motor, and I averaged around 12 mph on the third pedal assistance level (there's a throttle you can twist too). You get a seven-speed Shimano shifter, which makes it more versatile to ride. The usual faults of any fat-tire folding ebike apply. It's cumbersome to fold up and heavy. The original model required a key to be plugged in on the underside of the bike to start it, but that has since been remedied in the V2 model—now you just need the key to unlock and remove the battery. The rear hub motor does keep running for a second after you stop pedaling, so just be careful when you're coming to a traffic light. Direct-to-consumer bikes usually have some kind of damage from shipping in my experience, and on the F2, it was a broken reflector (which is frankly much better than the damage I've seen on Lectrics). Still, you get all the amenities you want, including a rear cargo rack, bell, headlight, and taillight. It's hard to beat that value. —Julian Chokkattu

The VanMoof Alternative

Last year, the Dutch company VanMoof—long referred to as “the Tesla of ebikes”— went bankrupt . That was unfortunate, as we very much liked its affordable, good-looking bikes . If you want a Euro-style VanMoof alternative that's light, stylish, and affordable, you might want to try the Wing Freedom X ( 7/10, WIRED Review ). WIRED reviewer Matt Jancer notes it's an awful lot of bike for $1,500. It's a class 1 ebike with a 350-watt Bafang motor (you can purchase a throttle separately), seven gears, and five levels of assist. Jancer says it has strong acceleration and comfy grips and seat; it does, however, have a bit of a laggy throttle and only so-so cable brakes.

Electra Loft Go electric bicycle

Best Comfy Cruiser

We're currently testing a few more sit-up cruisers, which is this particular style of bike meant for comfortable, slow riding around your neighborhood. If you need a bike for running errands in your sundress this summer, I recommend the Electra Loft Go! ( 7/10, WIRED Review ). It's almost 20 pounds lighter than the last Electra I tested, thanks to a new lightweight drivetrain system made by Hyena. It's a class 1 ebike with a 250-watt rear hub motor and an integrated 250-Wh battery.

This isn't a bike meant for a rigorous daily commute. The range is only about 25 miles, there's no suspension, and the curved handlebars are meant to be comfortable, not to steer around lots of rocks and potholes. However, it let me do what it's meant to do perfectly, which to me, meant breeze effortlessly next to my husband with a straw purse tucked under my arm as we went to get patio cocktails in the afternoon.

Aventon Aventure.2 Adventure EBike

The Best All-Terrain Bike

One of my favorite electric bikes is the Specialized Turbo Tero ( 8/10, WIRED Recommends ), which I called the quiver-killer—that one bike that can go anywhere, at any time, and do anything. The affordable version of that is this fat-tire ebike from Aventon. WIRED reviews editor Parker Hall used the Aventure.2 ( 8/10, WIRED Recommends ) for everything from riding on trails to going to the store. It ships as a class 2 ebike , but you can unlock it to be a class 3, because, as Hall says, “more power rules.”

This is an ebike that feels a lot like hopping on a superlight motorcycle, but Hall does not consider that a bad thing. He rode it all summer and it felt remarkably powerful and stable, with big fat tires, front suspension, and components like a Shimano gearset. The price includes the built-in lights and fenders. As a non-bike-mechanic, he did have some trouble adjusting the hydraulic brakes (I'll say it again: Take your bike to a shop!), but he rode it for an entire summer of versatile commuting and park visits.

Side view of white electric bike with storage carrier on the back

The Best Cargo Bike

It is simply preposterous that the Lectric XPedition only costs this much. Several of my friends own it; my spouse prefers it to my much more expensive Tern GSD ( 8/10, WIRED Recommends ). For the price, the build quality and the components are remarkable. You can set it to ride as a class 1, 2, or 3 ebike with five different levels of assist and throttle; the 750-watt motor has a peak of 1,310 W as well, so it will have no trouble carrying heavy loads.

I am 115 pounds, and my husband is 170 pounds; while I can get up the steep Battery Killer hill in Portland, Oregon, on my Tern GSD while carrying two kids, he cannot. He's much heavier and needs the throttle on the Lectric to give him the juice when he needs it. It's adjustable and has a low center of gravity, so both of us can use it, and the rear rack holds up to 300 pounds. Lectric also has an enormous amount of high-quality accessories, and you can customize it pretty easily. The dual kickstand is not that stable, and the motor is kind of loud, but that's about the only flaws. It's the easiest bike I've assembled out of the box too. This is the only cheap ebike I will regularly ride as a passenger, and it feels great.

SixThreeZero Electrified EvryJourney electric tricycle

The Best Bike for Elderly Riders

As WIRED contributor Stephanie Pearson notes, an electric bike keeps people healthy and moving long after they might have had to set down an analog bike. But older adults might require a bike with a step-through frame or other accommodations to help them keep it from tipping over.

The solution is an electric tricycle, and this class 2 trike from SixThreeZero fits the bill. The 250-watt motor is in the front hub, which gives it a speed of 15 mph in full-throttle mode. It has a range of up to 60 miles, and there's even a rear basket where your elderly loved one can put their small dog or a basket of library books. It's not easy to lift, but it comes in a wide array of colors, and it's very, very cute. As long as your loved one has a garage that they can roll it into, he or she can keep pedaling for as long as they want.

2023 Jackrabbit XG

My Favorite Tiny Ebike

Ebikes come and ebikes go, but the one bike that I always want to have on hand is a JackRabbit . You might call it a microbike. This is the most useful electric bike I have tested for what city planners call trip-chaining, or putting multiple trips together. This is a bike that you can easily throw into a trunk and zip off to the grocery store while your kids are at the park, or if you want to drop off your car at Les Schwab and zip home for two to three hours.

The cheaper OG rings in at $1,000 , but the new XG has a slightly longer frame, a 500-watt motor, and two swappable battery slots. More power and more range make it much more useful than the original JackRabbit, even if it is a little bigger. (I do have to admit that it was funny forcing my much larger spouse to ride up and down the street on a quarter-sized electric bike.) I enjoy puttering around my neighborhood and startling my neighbors when I zip around a corner on something that looks like what their child should be riding. It is a cute and capable last-mile solution .

Honorable Mentions

Not every bike we've tested is a top pick, but here are a few more options if nothing above suits you:

  • The Lectric XP 3.0 for $1,437 : This is the bike I see the most often in my neighborhood in Portland, Oregon. WIRED reviews editor Julian Chokkattu also found that it offered great value for the price, with suspension, a throttle, reliable range, and a host of affordable accessories. He also tested Lectric's XP Lite , which honestly wasn't that much lighter and was frustrating to use.
  • The Lectric XP Trike for $1,715 : This is a slightly more affordable option than the SixThreeZero trike above. WIRED reviews editor Julian Chokkattu tested it and enjoyed the range and power of this trike, but he also had some difficulties maneuvering it around and keeping it maintained.
  • The Ride1Up Cafe Cruiser for $1,595 : I'm always surprised that 65-pound behemoths are always advertised as entry-level electric bikes. Nevertheless, I found that Ride1Up's version offers a lot of power and comfort for the money, with big thick wheels, a plushy seat, and a long-lived battery.

Hand removing the battery from an electric bike

Keep It Fire Free

Even cheap ebikes are vehicles, not toys. In our years of testing electric bikes, we've had components snap on us at 20 miles per hour; we've had pedals break off, kicked fenders as we rode, and even had drive trains arc on us as we were assembling them. It's important that we recommend a safe bike.

The most important factor we look for as we test ebikes is UL certification. As ebikes have boomed in popularity, so have the number of deadly fires from charging poorly regulated lithium-ion batteries . Starting on September 16, 2023, New York City requires that all battery-operated mobility devices sold, rented, or leased in New York City be certified by an accredited testing laboratory to comply with Underwriters Laboratories (UL) safety standards.

You don't have to let safety considerations deter you from buying a cheap ebike, but we would urge you to consider a few basic safety rules. As a general rule of thumb, treat your bike like you would any other giant battery. Do not leave it charging overnight. Do not use a third-party charger. If it gets smashed, starts leaking, or looks weird, leave it alone and call the fire department. And as always, do not let your children ride it or play with it unattended .

How professional thieves stole $1 million worth of unreleased e-bikes in seven minutes

Avatar for Micah Toll

When my high-end electric bike was stolen last year , the intense combination of feelings ranging from violation to anger was hard to describe. But that is nothing compared to what one innovative electric bike maker is going through after $1M worth of unreleased new e-bikes was stolen in one fell swoop.

Biktrix, the Canadian e-bike maker behind several impressively designed, high-power models , shared the devastating news that a container of new Juggernaut FS ST e-bikes was stolen from the company’s Delta, BC warehouse. There were also several prototype models Biktrix is developing for release next year in the container.

It’s a huge setback for Biktrix, which has grown from humble beginnings a decade ago as a garage startup into a major e-bike maker with a 20,000-strong customer base.

The new Juggernaut FS ST e-bike model was recently announced, with Biktrix preparing to begin shipments to fulfill pre-orders. This was the first batch of these new e-bikes produced.

Unlike many white-labeled electric bikes that use a combination of à la carte components and frames chosen from a catalog of OEM parts, the Juggernaut FS ST is Biktrix’s own in-house design. It also features a unique frame with a hidden rear shock assembly, making it easy to identify.

trek e bike throttle

The bike includes a powerful mid-drive motor that puts out 1,200 watts of power, as well as an industry-leading 1,300 Wh battery. That’s roughly twice the size of the average e-bike battery on most models these days.

With a combination cadence and torque sensor for pedal assist as well as throttle control, it’s quite unique among today’s high-powered full-suspension e-bikes, especially for an easy-to-mount step-through e-bike.

Its eye-catching design should make the bike easily identifiable. To further help identify the bikes, should they make it onto the secondary market, Biktrix shared that they include serial numbers in the range from BK2CE30001 to BK2CE30140.

trek e bike throttle

Biktrix also shared security footage showing the suspected thieves arriving at the warehouse with a Ryder semi-truck used to pull the container. The container appears to have been mounted on a container chassis, likely from its recent delivery at the warehouse. The thieves broke the lock securing the container chassis, connected it to the semi-truck, and drove off into the night with one million dollars worth of unreleased new e-bikes in tow. They were on site for just seven minutes.

What likely would have been a fairly simple case for the police in a country with stronger public surveillance turned out to be a nightmare for Biktrix. The company discovered after talking to police that traffic cameras in Canada don’t actually record video unless a car is speeding or runs a red light. The company also provided the license plate number of the thieves, but the police could legally only surveil them for two days. As the company’s CEO explained, the vehicle didn’t go near the bikes in those two days, and so the police had to end the surveillance and effectively release the thieves.

Top comment by Tom D

However, the container had already reached Biktrix’s receiving warehouse, meaning it would typically no longer be covered under the policy.

Surely they had insurance on the contents of the warehouse that will hopefully insulate the company from at least some of the financial impact of the theft. Now the question is what the thieves will do with these bikes -- because if they sell them intact (as opposed to stripping them apart and selling the pieces) the uniqueness of these bikes may actually give a chance of catching the culprits.

“This container wasn’t just metal and contents, this container was like a treasure chest of our dreams, our entire team’s hard work, and considerable market value worth $1M—comprising all of our savings,” explained Biktrix Founder and CEO Roshan Thomas.

The container was insured with a standard ship to shore policy, commonplace in the ocean freight industry. However, the container had already reached Biktrix’s receiving warehouse, meaning it would typically no longer be covered under the policy.

While it is looking increasingly unlikely, the company hopes that the Canadian police will be able to locate the container before the bikes are lost. They also urge anyone who sees the container or the Juggernaut FS ST bikes to contact their local authorities. These are the only Juggernaut FS ST bikes in North America.

In the meantime, Thomas and the rest of the company are trying to keep their spirits up, explaining “We’re determined not to let this set us back. Instead, we’re using it as fuel to push harder, innovate more, and keep believing in what we do.”

Riding the MOD City+ 3 electric bike is quite a thrill. It catches eyes, drives smoothly and quietly, has excellent acceleration and braking, and is loads of fun. As long as you engage the thumb throttle. And that’s frankly how many people will ride any electric bike.

When you go to pedal this model, things get a little dicey. For one, it seems really heavy – too much so at times to initiate pedaling without using the thumb throttle. Despite whichever of the seven manual gears and five pedal assist levels (six including ‘off’) you set this at, if you’re at a stop sign and want to start pedaling from a standstill, it may well be a struggle. Especially if the road is even slightly uphill.

Secondly, when I used the pedals after getting it up to full speed via the throttle, it was almost as if pedaling in the first five manual gears was adding nothing – there just wasn’t enough resistance. And the sixth and seventh gears were nearly too tough to use. I found that to be a little frustrating. Mind you, I live in a hilly and consistently breezy area. So your experience may differ.

I get it – this is first and foremost intended to be a city bike. Which is why it’s built to be so stable. It has a powerful motor; 3-inch tires that easily handle paved roads, sand and gravel with more traction; optional and removable front rack and rear basket; leather handles; super-comfortable seat with plenty of cushion; a front suspension fork with 50 mm of travel to soften the road; and powerful hydraulic brakes – and it’s all foldable for easier storage. It even has a 52-tooth crank with double-sided bash guards to keep your clothes clean. And by the way, it can go up to 28 miles per hour – in my experience that was easy to achieve. Perhaps its 65-pound weight is one reason why pedaling it seems to be a bit tougher. But another may be that the battery is positioned essentially right below the rider, which may exasperate the balance. Speaking of, battery life promises to get anywhere between 45 and 90 miles per charge, depending on the weight of your total load, the speed you go at, and the conditions. I got far less, but I also used the throttle almost exclusively while also battling plenty of hills and wind.

The bike also has a wonderful, large color display that stays bright under the sun. An included USB charger lets you navigate maps, charge up a phone, or listen to music without worrying about your battery.

If you are just looking to get you from point A to point B; if you’re lazy; or if you just want a great-accelerating, essentially automatic throttle-operated e-bike, this one’s for you. It’s truly a powerful ride that’s super fun to be on. I was telling my wife about it, and she reasoned that people should still want to get exercise on an e-bike by pedaling. And I agree.

I’m not sure how to form an official opinion about this bike. As mentioned, it looks great, rides with might and can get you places fast. If you’re into just throttling to get around town, this is for you. But if you want any amount of exercise, it may not be a great choice.
