Panabo – Banana Capital of the Philippines

Owing to the numerous banana plantations scattered around the city, Panabo is known as the “ Banana Capital of the Philippines .” Coincidentally, its home to the largest banana plantation in the world, the Tagum Agricultural Development Corporation or TADECO. TADECO occupies around 6,900 hectares of banana fields and is responsible for the production of millions of boxes of bananas for export.

But apart from being known as an exporter of Cavendish bananas for the world market, Panabo also has an interesting history.

The City’s History

A lowland place, Panabo was once inhabited by stocky-haired natives called Aetas . They lived a nomadic lifestyle and hunted for their food. Their most essential tool was the bow and arrow which is called “pana-sa-boboy.” Apart from hunting, their diet consisted of rootcrops.

At the beginning of the 20 th century, Christian settlers began descending in the area. By that time, Panabo was already a thriving trading community known as Taboan which means “trading center.”

As a result, the Aetas moved further up the hinterlands but they left a legacy as they are responsible for the name the the city bears – Panabo which evolved from “pana-sa-boboy.”

TOURIST ATTRACTIONS  

• Freedom Park – features a unique banana-inspired fountain which was sculpted by Kublai Millan , a world-class artist.
• Mariculture Park – a project of the Department of Agriculture’s Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources Region XI unit in conjunction with Davao City and the Panabo City local government unit. The project was put in place to “contribute to national food security; ensure rational and judicious development; sustainability and conservation of the country’s fisheries including the EFZ and adjacent territorial waters; reduce poverty incidence in the coastal areas; and enhance fisheries folk empowerment.” The park covers three coastal barangays – JP Laurel, Cagangohan and San Pedro. It is designed to produce bangus, siganid, grouper, red snappers, as well as seaweed farming, mussel culture, pearl oyster culture and sea ranching of lobsters.
• Tagum Agricultural Development Corporation – a producer of bananas in the city which are also sent for export.

EVENTS  

• Araw ng Panabo – an annual celebration in Panabo City usually held from March 20 to 31. This is an event celebrated to honor Panabo becoming a component city (it was formerly a barangay of Tagum). During these days, a series of civic and multicultural shows will take place, as well as presentations that embody and embrace the beauty that is found only in Panabo.

GETTING HERE  

Located along Daang Maharlika or the Pan-Philippines Highway, Panabo City is situated between two major cities in Davao: Davao City and Tagum City.

Panabo can be reached by land from Davao City through the Davao-Butuan, Davao-Mati and Davai-Tagum bus routes. Other forms of public transport such as jeepneys, vans and metered taxis are available as well. Panabo is about 32 kilometers from Davao City (or around 45 minutes) and 28 kilometers (about 30 minutes) from Tagum City.

By Air  

There are several local and international airlines that cover Davao through the Davao International Airport. From the airport, a metered taxi, van or jeepney can be boarded to get to Panabo City.

By Sea  

Panabo can be reached by sea through the Sasa Port of Davao City. Once in the city, any public transportation can be boarded to get to Panabo City.

Even before the Spaniards came to posses the country, Panabo was already a thriving community with an open trade with nearby country. The place was inhabited by the Aetas. These people were living through hunting and were spending all their days in the wild forests of the area.

Population/ Language/ Area

Population of the city reached to 164,035 as of 2010, all living in a total land area of 251.23 km 2 (97.00 sq mi).

The City of Panabo is located between the two (2) bustling cities of Tagum and Davao City. It is within the latitude of 125º to 44” North and longitude of 7˚,  14”  and 7˚ and 23”  East. It is bounded on the North-East and North-West by the Municipality of Carmen, on the South-West by Davao Gulf and on the West by Davao City.

It is the doorstep of Davao City towards the Province of Davao del Norte. It could be reached by all types of land transportation passing through the Daang Maharlika (Pan-Philippines Highways) plying from Davao City to the northern part of Davao and finally to Butuan City and Cagayan de Oro City. It is thirty-two (32) kilometers away from Davao City and twenty-eight (28) kilometers from Tagum City. It is also forty-five (45) minutes ride from Davao and thirty minutes (30) from Tagum City.

Because of its nearness to Davao City and its rich agricultural lands, it is a ready market for products such as processed foods, fertilizer, feeds, farm implements, furniture, fashion items, and other consumer goods. Panabo is a 3rd class component city in the province of Davao del Norte with a total population of 209,230 people, according to the 2020 census. Panabo City covered an area of 25,123 hectares and is also part of the Davao Metropolitan Area located between Carmen town and Davao del Sur's boundary, Davao City. 

The local government unit of Panabo was created into a component city of Davao del Norte by virtue of Republic Act No. 9015 and ratified by the residents in a plebiscite held on March 31, 2001. It was bordered by the shores of Davao Gulf to the east, by Davao City to its west and south, and by some of the municipalities of Davao del Norte in the north. 

BRIEF HISTORY

Panabo was originally the home to groups of natives called Aetas before it was conquered by the settlers from Luzon and Visayas. Using their maximum crucial tool, the bow and arrow—"pana-sa-boboy" as they name it—they searched for meals which mostly consisted of root crops and meat of untamed boars. Settlers and pioneers from the Visayas and Luzon began to flock to the location throughout the early 1900s looking for a brand new existence withinside the region.

Activities and Events, Tourist Spots

Binulig festival .

Binulig Festival is a 5 long weeks celebration every month of October. Most of the activities such as street dancing competition, Farmer’s Day, talent, and pageant night are held in the Panabo Multi-purpose gym which can cater to thousands of viewers and participants celebrating the event. 

The highlight of the event, which is the street dancing competition, is held in the open area outside the gym so the performers could go all out in their acts and choreographies without the fear of destroying public property or causing damage to people watching. 

The local government partners with the City Government of Tourism in promoting the beauty and richness of the city focusing on art and cultural representation through activities and contests meant to be participated by the youth. 

Every year, the people of Panabo are given an opportunity to revisit the colorful culture and rich history of the city. Activities, programs, and events were being organized in order for them to have fun, showcase their talents, and take pride in being a Panaboan. 

Everyone regardless of age, gender, race, and ethnicity gathers to celebrate Panabo’s culture, history, tradition, and legends such as the deities and gods that guard and bless the city with a good harvest every year which contributes to our growing economy.

Araw ng Davao del Norte

It was celebrated every 1st of July. Government offices made their way through the hot and blistering streets of downtown Tagum City. Davao del Norte employees on the blistering streets of downtown during the Civic Parade or formerly known as “Alay-Lakad” has a theme “Kahiusayan sa Kadaugan ug mas Malungtarong Kalamboan.” All government offices around the province were all participated in this special event.  

Employees and Contract of Service Workers were among the participants in the solidarity walk, which started at the Tagum City Historical and Cultural Center going through the major routes of Tagum City leading to Davao del Norte Sports and Tourism Complex (DNSTC) in Barangay Mankilam, City of Tagum.

Patronal and City Fiesta 

It was celebrated every 15th of September. Lots of activities during that night were held in Maryknoll College Gym attended by local leaders, parochial heads, and devotees. 

Japanese Tunnel and the Mabunao Eco-Park

Tourism Panabo and CENRO recently assessed the Japanese Tunnel at Barangay Kiotoy to develop the area for potential attractions together with the Mabunao Eco-Park at Barangay Mabunao. The city tourism also conducted site visits at Pagmahay Falls in  Barangay Buenavista and Tagaktak Falls in Barangay San Nicolas. These initiatives will help improve the emerging tourism destination in the city. 

Paskuhan sa Panabo

Visit Panabo City in December as to enjoy the lightning galore at the city hall grounds. The local government assures that people visiting the city did not feel disappointed during the Pasiga sa Panabo making sure the joy and excitement of every Panaboans were evident during the fireworks display that provides a more flamboyant celebration of Paskuhan sa Panabo.
