Crystal Symphony is so good you could be forgiven for thinking it’s too good to be true. The legendary cruise ship has returned to service with magnificent suites, butler service, delectable dining and that most exclusive of all modern luxuries; space to call your own.

Now under the careful oversight of new owners the A&K Travel group (with former Silversea chairman Manfredi Lefebvre d’Ovidio ), Crystal Symphony offers a very special cruise experience. Made even more so thanks to the intuitive and warm service provided by the experienced crew, 80-percent of whom previously worked for Crystal Cruises.

  • Exceptional cuisine.
  • Personal butlers.
  • Outstanding service.
  • All new suites and refreshed public areas.
  • Ample space to call your own.
  • None to mention.

What time can you go to your room after embarkation?

The rooms on Crystal Symphony will usually be ready from 3:00pm on the day of embarkation.

The Crystal Symphony deck plan is mostly easy to get around. There are a total of 8 passenger decks, the highest of which is deck 12.

  • Reception : Deck 5
  • Accommodation : Decks 5 to 10
  • Main dining room : Deck 5
  • Theatre : Deck 6
  • Observation lounge : Deck 12

Crystal Symphony is unique. Built in Finland and launched in May 1995 the vessel is 238 m. / 781 ft. long with 12 decks. The cruise ship originally had room for over 900 passengers. However, when the A&K Group purchased Crystal they invested heavily in improving the fleet.

The spectacular Crystal Plaza atrium on Crystal Symphony.

So on Crystal Symphony they started by reducing capacity to 606 guests. This allowed them to transform the accommodation decks with bigger suites as well as brand new guest rooms. Crystal Symphony’s restaurants, bars and lounges also got a make over.

Crystal Symphony's acclaimed Waterside Restaurant.

It’s worth noting that the casino has gone, making way for a spacious lounge.

New water treatment and energy recovery systems have also made Crystal Symphony greener . In addition, fuel consumption was reduced by painting a special treatment on the hull.

The relaunch of Crystal Symphony took place in September 2023. It is a classic reborn; made better than new.

Crystal Symphony serves some of the best food at sea. Indeed, the cuisine in the Waterside Restaurant is better than any other main dining room afloat. What’s more, a Michelin-starred chef oversees one of the two outstanding speciality restaurants.

In fact there are a total of 9 dining venues on Crystal Symphony; a remarkable number for a vessel so intimate. There is also a tapas-style restaurant, an upmarket buffet and an exclusive private dining room. Not to mention a pool side grill, chic cafe and an ice cream bar.

Seared Ahi Tuna as served in the Waterside Restaurant on Crystal Symphony.

We rate the Waterside Restaurant as the best dining venue; if only for the indulgent, ever changing menu. Dishes like Seared Ahi Tuna with Wasabi Crumble or Turbot & Butter Poached Lobster with Caviar Velouté are sublimely divine. Not to mention Slow Roasted Veal Fillet with Mascarpone Porcini Risotto & Artichoke. Fellow guests would quip the Waterside Restaurant was so good speciality venues weren’t required!

Stir Fried Lobster with Garlic, Asparagus and Shitake Mushrooms, Finished with Truffle Uzu.

That said, you shouldn’t miss the speciality restaurants either. Umi Uma makes a triumphant return to Crystal. Master chef Nobuyki (Nobu) Matusuhisa oversees the menu which has fine quality sashimi and signature dishes like Nobu-Style Black Cod, as well as Lobster with Truffle-Yuzu. A new addition to the Crystal dining scene is Osteria d’Ovidio . Named for the company’s co-owner, it celebrates the cuisine of Italy with superb pasta dishes like Tortello Pasta filled with Braised Beef, Figs Vincotto & Gorgonzolla Cheese. You can also enjoy family-style dining in Tastes Kitchen & Bar with sharable dishes like Crispy Fried Prawn Dumplings, and California Street Tacos with Blackened Swordfish & Pico de Gallo.

For an additional fee there is private dining in the exclusive Vintage Room . It has a degustation menu paired with excellent wines from the ship’s extensive cellar.

A dessert selection in the Marketplace buffet.

The Marketplace buffet also serves outstanding cuisine. It has a casual and easy ambiance that makes it popular with almost everyone on board.

The Bistro cafe on board Crystal Symphony.

The Parisian-style Bistro café has really good coffee not to mention tasty treats. Up on the pool deck the Trident Grill serve lunchtime classics like burgers, melts and salads.

Crystal Symphony’s nightlife is sophisticated and immensely enjoyable. Talented musicians play in the Crystal Cove bar each evening. Down the hall there is dancing in the Starlite Club and a pianist takes requests in the intimate Avenue Salon .

The Crystal Symphony cast perform in the Galaxy Lounge.

A large cast of seasoned performers entertain in the Galaxy Lounge with Broadway-style production shows; these are very good.

On our voyage there were classical performances in the Palm Court . Also, there was late night entertainment with a DJ in the Jade Night Club .

All Crystal Symphony’s guest rooms and suites were refurbished in 2023. Indeed, some decks were entirely gutted to make way for bigger suites.

A Crystal Symphony Double Guest Room with veranda.

There are a relatively small number of Single and Double Guest Rooms . Some have picture windows while others have verandas. These are the least expensive rooms on board.

An Aquamarine Suite in the classic decor on Crystal Symphony.

However, most guests stay in more spacious suites like the Aquamarine Veranda Suite or the delightful Sapphire Veranda Suite which has a separate bedroom.

A Sappire Veranda Suite on Crystal Symphony.

For those who like even more space there is the palatial Junior Crystal Penthouse Suite , or the top of the range Crystal Penthouse Suite with an opulent spa-style bathroom.

It’s worth noting that the decor of some suites has not changed. This is the result of consultation with long-time Crystal guests, some of whom preferred what they knew.

Crystal Symphony has an indulgent spa known as Aurōra. Inspired by the Goddess of Dawn, the Aurōra spa is an oasis of calm in a sea of serenity. It successfully captures the essence of early morning tranquility; there is even a starlit ceiling. Indeed, Aurōra specialise in light therapies with treatments like the 50 minute duration LED & Cryo Facial Experience. I enjoyed a blissful massage treatment ; one of the most relaxing I can remember.

The Seahorse Pool on the Crystal Symphony cruise ship.

The sparkling Crystal Symphony swimming pool is perfect for a refreshing dip; and it’s surrounded by a glorious teak deck with sun loungers. There is also a large gym with exercise machines and free weights, as well as spin, pilates and yoga classes.

Shuffleboard on a teak cruise ship deck.

You can play shuffleboard or jog on the magnificent promenade decks. The Wimbledon Court is also open for tennis, or you can practice your golf swing in the driving nets on the top deck.

There is a terrific range of activities on board Crystal Symphony. The Hollywood Theatre has movie screenings; on my voyage these included “About My Father” with Robert De Niro and “Book Club: The Next Chapter” with Jane Fonda.

The Palm Court lounge and bar on the Crystal Symphony cruise ship.

In the Palm Court you can enjoy decadent afternoon teas. Crystal Symphony also has photography and computer classes, seminars on improving posture and skin care as well as ladies pamper parties. Not to mention spa raffles valued at USD 500.

The library on board Crystal Symphony.

There is a peaceful, well stocked library which is open every day. If you enjoy golf you will appreciate the Golf Clinic with the ship’s resident instructor. Fitness fanatics can also join the daily yoga and spin classes.

In addition, there are jewellery presentations in the boutique as well as lectures from guest speakers, unhosted bridge, team trivia and mar jongg. Also, there are get togethers for veterans and friends of Bill W.

It’s also worth noting that Crystal has continued its Stateroom Open House program showcasing selected suites and Penthouses. Watch the daily Reflections newsletter for availability.

Crystal Symphony has shore excursions catering to all interests and abilities, from scenic bus tours to small group cultural explorations.

A Crystal Symphony shore excursion in Corfu, Greece.

On my voyage we joined a small group 4WD tour into the highlands of Corfu, Greece. We discovered almost deserted villages not to mention a forgotten way of life. Few others who visit the island are afforded such a unique experience.

By contrast, on another day we took a little boat to a delightful local beach near Dubrovnik, Croatia for an afternoon of fun in sun with the locals.

There are also chef’s market tours, curated visits to museums, galleries and even luncheons on farms and vineyards.

A Crystal Symphony cruise fare is all-inclusive. Beverages are included; even champagne and top-shelf spirits. So too are gratuities, as well as wi-fi and internet access. All meals are also included. There is even an allocation in the two speciality restaurants (based on the voyage duration):

  • Voyages up to 11 days: One complimentary reservation at each restaurant.
  • Voyages from 12 – 22 days: Two complimentary reservations at each restaurant.
  • Voyages of 23 days or more: Three complimentary reservations at each restaurant.

Additional reservations can be made, however they will incur a USD 50 supplement per person.

Most voyages also include a Captain’s Reception & Crystal Society Party. It is a great way to met your fellow guests, or reunite with previous travel companions. There is also a Crystal White Dress Party where everyone wears white. It is usually held in the Crystal Plaza with entertainment by the Crystal Showband.

In addition, Crystal Symphony has a free shuttle bus service between the port and downtown (if it is not within walking distance).

There is also a self-service laundry. However, it’s worth noting that certain suite categories get a free dry cleaning and pressing allowance.

The Crystal Symphony dress code can best be described as ‘resort-chic’.

During the day guests are encouraged to wear casual attire – even in the restaurants. So clothing like sundresses, shorts, jeans, T-shirts or linen garments are all fine. In the Trident Grill, Tastes, and the Marketplace buffet you can also wear covered swimsuits.

It probably goes without saying, but you cannot wear swimwear on its own, bathrobes, bare feet, tank tops or baseball caps in dining venues.

After 6:00pm the Crystal Symphony dress code changes to Evening Resort style. So men wear slacks or dark jeans and a collared shirt (jacket optional). Women wear slacks, dark jeans or a skirt, and a blouse.

On formal nights men should wear suits or tuxedos and collared shirts. Ties are optional. Women should wear cocktail dresses or gowns, suits, evening skirts or pants with an elegant top.

It’s hardly surprising that many guests have sailed on Crystal Symphony before; the ship has a loyal following.

Guests range in age from 35 to 75-years old. However, there can be families with young children on board too; especially on warm weather voyages.

Most guests come from the USA and UK, although Canadians, Australians and Europeans also enjoy Crystal Symphony.

It’s worth noting that Crystal Symphony is also gay-friendly.

Crystal Symphony is an excellent choice if you enjoy the good life. There is exquisite dining, intuitive service and a sublime sense of privacy as well as sophisticated entertainment and thoughtfully curated shore excursions. Indeed, Crystal Symphony is so good you’d be forgiven for thinking it’s too good to be true.

Review: Crystal Symphony

crystal symphony cruise line

Reviewed by Scott Laird

What is the line? Crystal Cruises

Name of ship? Crystal Symphony

Passenger occupancy? 606

Itinerary? Crystal Symphony will sail in the Mediterranean, Indian Ocean, Asia, and Australia in 2023 and 2024.

Start out with the big picture—what is this cruise line known for?

Crystal has attracted a following of travelers seeking understated luxury, privacy, and space. Crystal is known for effusive onboard service from longtime cruise veterans who establish yearslong relationships with guests who come back again and again. Butlers carefully catalog guest preferences, from room temperature to the exact specifications of a coffee order—and remember them. Crystal is focused on personalization—want the chefs to whip up your grandmother’s best cookie recipe? If they have the ingredients, they’ll make it happen.

Tell us about the ship in general

Fresh off a down-to-the-steel drydock and refit, the ship feels brand new, with one exception—it was originally built in 1995 before propulsion “pod” technology, so the vibration from the propellers in some parts of the ship is noticeable. The recent refurbishment reduced the passenger count onboard, giving the ship an immense amount of space per passenger—even for a luxury liner (84.2 cubic feet). You won’t find fancy whizz-bang amusements as on larger ships, but between top-notch bars, restaurants (including a Nobu outpost) and entertainment ranging from stage productions, films, lectures, and the line’s legendary White Party, there’s little shortage of amusement onboard.

Who is onboard?

Well-heeled and exceptionally well-traveled. Crystal’s itineraries skew closer to two weeks, so retirees and others with time on on their hands are well-represented onboard, but you’ll also find a smattering of families and multi-generational groups, particularly during holiday periods.

Describe the cabins

Cabins have been refreshed in contemporary color palettes, and there are now single-occupancy cabins which are identical to doubles except they’re inventory-controlled for solo travelers without a single supplement to the fare. All stateroom and suite categories have butler service, although additional services (like free laundry, pressing, and dry-cleaning) are offered in higher-tier suite categories. Design features include Italian marble and high thread count linens, and guests arrive to welcome champagne, a minibar setup replenished daily with complimentary wine, beer, spirits and soft drinks, plus free standard WiFi. Some suite categories have a design choice between contemporary and “classic” designs so fans of the heritage Crystal room design can stick with what they know.

Tell us about the crew

In a word—tenured. Crystal’s onboard crew are your typical international mix, but many of them have been with Crystal their entire careers—many with decades of experience onboard the same ship, building ongoing relationships with repeat cruisers, often greeting them as old friends with hugs at embarkation. Crystal’s ratio of staff to guests is also nearly 1:1, meaning the service is utterly attentive.

What food and drink options are available on board?

Plenty. The main Waterside Restaurant is top-notch, with a menu of both classic and contemporary gastronomic delights. Specialty restaurants include Umi Uma, Nobu Matsuhisa’s Japanese-Peruvian Fusion, and Osteria d’Ovidio, fine Italian dining with regional tasting menus. Specialty restaurants are included in the fare once each for a voyage up to 11 days (longer voyages offer more inclusions) and are unlimited for top-tier suites. There’s also the Bistro, serving coffee and light bites, a cook-to-order grill, Tastes Kitchen & Bar offering tapas-style table service, Scoops Ice Cream Bar, and Marketplace, the buffet-style restaurant, not to mention 24 hour in-suite dining (top tier suites can order in from Umi Uma and Osteria d’Ovidio). For an additional supplement, guests can dine in The Vintage Room for a food and wine pairing experience. Most alcohol is included, so bars like Crystal Cove off the Atrium, the Starlight Club cabaret, pub-style Avenue Saloon, Connoisseur Club cigar bar, and Luxe Night Club are also included, unless guests want top-shelf wines or liquors, which are also available.

Is there a spa on board and is it worth visiting?

The Aurōra Spa offers a fantastical diversity of treatments – everything from coconut poultice, bamboo, hot stone, and Swedish massages to facials, medi-spa treatments to tighten skin and smooth wrinkles, IV treatments, acupuncture, body wraps, teeth whitening, and salon services for hair and nails.

Activities and entertainment

While not offering the host of amenities of a megaship (you won’t find bowling alleys or rollercoasters here) there’s still plenty of sophisticated entertainment, from traditional production shows like jukebox revues, artist tributes or Broadway homages to a theatre for guest lectures and films. There’s also a cabaret, the Starlite Club, which hosts stand-up comedians, lectures or live music for dancing, or the after-hours Jade Night Club for dancing, drinks, and karaoke. Guests will also enjoy the classic, saltwater Seahorse Pool, refreshed workout spaces, tennis courts, and golf driving range on the top decks.

How was the experience for families?

Families are less common on Crystal, but there’s still a dedicated kids and teens clubs called Waves, and Fantasia, respectively. Crystal anticipates offering kids and teens programming on select voyages when passenger numbers warrant.

Where did it sail and how were the excursions? Did anything stand out?

Crystal is in the process of building out a suite of excursions in cooperation with parent Abercrombie & Kent, which specializes in small-group luxury destination experiences.

Are there any stand out sustainability or green initiatives about this cruise?

Recyclable items have separate receptacles and in-room toiletries are in large refillable bottles which help reduce waste.

Anything we missed?

Unlike most cruise lines, Crystal does not restrict how much wine or alcohol guests may bring onboard with them, although they note that restrictions may be in place in some destinations served by the line.

Finally, give a sentence or two on why the cruise is worth booking.

Fairy godmother-like service, endless amounts of space, and premium—well—everything are the hallmarks of the Crystal experience. Travelers seeking a luxury experience with the amenities and choice of a larger cruise ship will be well served onboard a voyage with Crystal.

Crystal Symphony Cruise Ship - Cabins and Suites

crystal symphony cruise line

The Crystal Symphony has five different types of accommodations. Some staterooms have bathrooms that are accessible to those passengers with disabilities. The staterooms are:

  • Crystal Penthouse Suite
  • Penthouse Suite
  • Deluxe Stateroom with Verandah
  • Deluxe Stateroom with Window

As with most ships, the most expensive cabins are on the higher decks. All of the staterooms are outside, and over half have verandahs (balconies).

Standard features in all of the Crystal Symphony staterooms include down pillows and duvets, refrigerator and mini-bar, satellite telephone, and hairdryer. The television has a good selection of programs. The baths include deluxe Aveda toiletries and bathrobes.

The passengers in the penthouse (PH), penthouse suite (PS), and Crystal penthouse (CP) staterooms on the penthouse deck 10 have personal butler service, which includes in-cabin daily hors-d'oeuvres in the afternoon.

Let's take a detailed tour of the different cabin categories on the Crystal Symphony cruise ship.

Crystal Symphony - Deluxe Stateroom With Window

The deluxe staterooms on the Crystal Symphony seen in the photo above are similar to the deluxe staterooms with a verandah, except they have a picture window instead of a door to the outside.

  • 206 square feet with Large Picture Window
  • Large picture window
  • Seating area
  • Queen-size bed or twin beds
  • Complimentary beer, wine, soft drinks and bottled water in the room
  • Flat-panel television with DVD/CD player
  • Free Wi-Fi and Internet access: 60 minutes per person, per day
  • Full bathtub/shower combination
  • Sweeping view
  • Refrigerator
  • Security safe

Crystal Symphony - Deluxe Stateroom with Verandah

The deluxe stateroom with verandah is the largest category of stateroom on the Crystal Symphony. With 246 square feet, the deluxe stateroom with verandah on the Crystal Symphony is smaller than similar cabins on other luxury ships. (Other luxury ships often have over 350 square feet in the same class.) The deluxe staterooms have a small settee and one armchair. They also do not have walk-in closets. However, although the Symphony's cabins are smaller, the common areas are very spacious and the service is exceptional, qualifying the ships for luxury status.

The deluxe stateroom with verandah on the Crystal Symphony include all the services and amenities seen in the deluxe staterooms with a picture window.

Penthouse - Crystal Symphony Staterooms - Crystal Cruises

The  penthouse staterooms on the Crystal Symphony  are very spacious and almost square, rather than narrow like many cabins with verandahs. They have a very nice sofa, desk area, and plenty of storage space, including a walk-in closet. There is no curtain dividing the sitting area from the sleeping area, which is found in many similar accommodations on other luxury ships. The penthouse suites do have a curtain divider. The cabins are equipped with two robes--a heavy terrycloth one and a lightweight one of cotton.

The penthouse staterooms on the Crystal Cruises' Crystal Symphony include the following:

  • 367 square feet (with verandah)
  • Complimentary welcome bottle of champagne upon arrival
  • Complimentary wine plus a choice of spirits from set menu upon embarkation
  • Complimentary soft drinks, beer and bottled water in room; stocked refrigerator
  • Flat-panel television with DVD/CD
  • In-suite satellite TV; movies available from the library
  • Two telephones
  • Fresh fruit basket replenished throughout voyage upon request
  • 24- hour room service
  • Order-in from specialty restaurants Silk Road and Prego
  • Canapés  served daily
  • Guaranteed preferred dining in the Crystal Dining room
  • ETRO S.P.A. Exclusive Sea bath and body amenities including bathrobes and slippers

  • Twice-daily housekeeping including evening turndown service
  • Complimentary pressing service
  • Self-service launderettes (exclusive to Penthouse Deck)
  • Fast-track Check-in on board ship
  • Complimentary champagne and welcome lunch for early embarkation

Penthouse Suite - Crystal Symphony - Crystal Cruises

The 491-square-foot Penthouse suites are over 100 square feet larger than the Penthouse staterooms and include a divider curtain that can be pulled to separate the sitting area from the sleeping area. The Crystal Symphony penthouse suites include all the amenities found in the Penthouse staterooms, plus two large windows/doors, two televisions, and a bidet in the bathroom.

Crystal Cruises - Crystal Symphony Staterooms - Crystal Penthouse Suite

The two 982 square foot Crystal Penthouse Suites are the Crystal Symphony's most luxurious accommodations.

Crystal Symphony cabins review

During the drydock refurbishment in 2023, Crystal Symphony staterooms' number was reduced from 452 to 310. This resulted in an increased/better passenger-per-space ratio (from 49 to 51) and passenger capacity changes - from 904 (double occupancy) and 1040 (max) to 606-739 (double/max).

The ship has no Inside rooms. ADA-certified/wheelchair-accessible cabins (for disabled passengers) are 3. Connecting cabins are 38 (19 pairs).

The number of cabin categories is 7 (max capacity of 4-3-2 guests per stateroom).

The 2023-refitted/redesigned Crystal Cruises Symphony ship now has three new cabin categories - "Junior Crystal Penthouse Suite", "Sapphire Oceanview Suite", and "Single Guest Room with Ocean View" (bookable without single supplements). The old Penthouses, as well as all oceanview and balcony cabins, were redesigned/enlarged and fully refurbished, while their categories were renamed.

The Symphony ship now has 4x Crystal Penthouse Suites (midship on decks 8 and 10), 8x Junior Crystal Penthouse Suites (forward and aft on decks 8-9), 85x Sapphire Veranda Suites, 48x Sapphire Oceanview Suites, 72x Aquamarine Veranda Suites, 22x Double Guest Room with Veranda (standard balcony cabins), 53x Double Guest Room with Oceanview, and 18x Single Guest Room with Oceanview (no single supplement cabins designed for solo travelers).

For the redesign and refurbishments related to select passenger accommodations, Crystal Cruises contracted GEM (Design for Cruise Ships/ Genoa Italy -based firm). The rooms' interior now features more neutral tones and pastel colors, premium fixtures, artisanal finishes, and contemporary furniture.

Standard cabin amenities and services (provided complimentary regardless of stateroom category) include living area (sofa, low table, mirrored vanity table with chair, TV, electronic safe box/in the closet), sleeping area (Queen-size double bed/convertible to twin beds, premium bedding sets, 4x pillows, leather headboard, nightstands with reading lamps), bathroom (with a walk-in shower, hairdryer, hair straightener/upon request), room service (24-hour in-cabin dining), turndown service, shoeshine service, packing and unpacking assistance, Welcome Aboard bottle of champagne.

Complimentary are provided wine and spirits by the glass (from a fixed menu), soft drinks, fresh fruits (changed daily/upon request), pillow menu, unlimited WiFi, interactive tablet (for making reservations and for receiving ship-related news and updates).

Aquamarine Suites and above additionally have a walk-in closet, one-touch LED lighting and surround-sound system, Nespresso coffee machine, 2x binoculars (voyage-use only) and daily receive flowers and afternoon canapes.

Sapphire Suites and above are with 2x TVs and additionally enjoy complimentary dry cleaning (5x pieces + 1x bag free laundry every 10 cruise days) and pressing (5x pieces per day).

Crystal Penthouse Suites are with quad occupancy (additionally have a double sofabed), 3x TVs, a separate dining room, Butler's pantry (refrigerator, coffee machine), master bedroom (convertible Queen bed), master bathroom with ocean view (Duravit Nahho floatation bathtub, TV, interactive shower, heated bench, bidet, separate toilet, dual-sink vanity), a half bath (toilet/washbasin only), master walk-in closet (illuminated rods, custom shelving).

OLD Crystal Symphony staterooms (review)

By the original design, of all Crystal Symphony cabins, 59% were with step-out balconies (65 Suites, 215 Balcony rooms), and the rest were Oceanview (197). The ship had no Inside rooms.

Handicap (wheelchair-accessible) cabins for disabled passengers were 10.

Connecting cabins were 34.

The number of all cabin categories was 13 (max capacity of 3 guests per stateroom).

Suite guests enjoy the following perks/complimentary provided amenities and services: butler service (shoeshine, unpacking, laundry/pressing/dry cleaning, welcome gifts (Champagne), luxury dining sets (China, Crystal).

CP Crystal Penthouse Suites have large living room (dining area, pantry, 3 TVs, Bang & Olufsen brand sound system, guest bathroom (shower), bedroom (2 twin beds /convertible to king, walk-in closet), master bathroom (whirlpool bathtub with oceanview, shower stall, bidet), gym area (with treadmill).

PS Penthouse Suites have a large living area, bedroom (picture window, 2 twin beds /convertible to queen, walk-in closet), bathroom (whirlpool bathtub, shower stall, bidet).

A two-ship line no longer, Crystal <a href="https://www.cntraveler.com/story/crystal-endeavor-the-incredible-new-luxury-expedition-yacht-is-going-to-some-out-there-spots?mbid=synd_msn_rss">introduced a yacht</a> to its fleet in early 2015. <em>Crystal Esprit,</em> equipped with its own two-person submersible, as well as butler service for every suite (all cabins are suites), has space for just 62 passengers to enjoy cruises within its focus regions of the Seychelles, Adriatic, and West Indies. The line also introduced a luxurious 200-passenger expedition ship in 2018, <em>Crystal Endeavor</em>, which sails to remote locations like the Arctic and Antarctic, as well as urban ports around the world.

Formerly Crystal Cruises, the adults-driven luxury line was purchased by Abercrombie & Kent Travel Group, then dramatically remodeled and reborn as Crystal. Its legions of fiercely loyal fans are largely back, as are many familiar crew who pamper passengers incessantly. Its two gorgeous ships, 740-passenger Crystal Serenity and 606-passenger Crystal Symphony , fairly ooze sophistication and style. Crystal renewed its partnership with Nobu Matsuhisa; the line's award-winning onboard restaurant Umi Uma presents the globally renowned chef’s only plates at-sea. These ships voyage most of the world, with inclusions like nearly all dining, alcohol, 24-hour room service, gratuities, butler service, and WiFi.

The sailing to take this year: Crystal Serenity offers a 12-day Cape Town to Tema, Ghana , visiting Namibia , Angola, and São Tomé, a dual-island nation dubbed Africa’s Galápagos. Incredible outings include climbing Walvis Bay’s colossal sand dunes and exploring São Tomé’s pristine forests with nearly 200 endemic species. Departs May 5, 2024, from $6,900 per person .

Count on some 44 such itineraries including onboard talks given by world-class experts, one excursion in each port, and other fare-included perks such as dining, alcohol, WiFi, and gratuities. So many Smithsonian Journeys compel, such as a nine-day Celtic Voyage, eight-day Cultural and Natural Treasures of Japan by Sea, and a nine-day Circumnavigation of Sicily.</p> <p><strong>The sailing to take this year:</strong> Hats-off to <em>Le Champlain’s</em> immersive <a href="https://www.cntraveler.com/story/sicily-italy-itinerary?mbid=synd_msn_rss&utm_source=msn&utm_medium=syndication">Sicily</a> voyage sailing roundtrip Valletta, <a href="https://www.cntraveler.com/story/malta-lily-agius-locals-guide?mbid=synd_msn_rss&utm_source=msn&utm_medium=syndication">Malta</a>. These Are the Best Cruises for Solo Travelers

One writer actually prefers to travel solo on these cruises (even though she’s married). here are her favorite cruises for traveling on your own..

Uniworld Boutique River Cruises is waiving its single supplement on numerous spring sailings—including in Bordeaux on the S.S. Bon Voyage.

Traveling alone can be tricky. I love the total independence, but even after decades of solo globe-trotting I still occasionally get that wistful “I wish I had someone to share this with” feeling.

Group tours, which many solo travelers opt for, ensure that you always have company. But it’s not always the company you’d choose, and the itineraries can feel a bit rigid at times. I often feel like I don’t have enough time to wander on my own when I’m traveling with a tour group.

That’s why I’ve fallen in love with small-ship cruising , which, in my opinion, offers the best of all worlds. In fact (and don’t tell my husband), I actually prefer traveling alone on small ships. Why? Because unlike on ships with thousands of passengers—many of whom you may never even encounter let alone get friendly with—it’s really easy to find like-minded travelers to socialize with. I have yet to travel on a small ship where I didn’t forge new and lasting friendships with fellow solo travelers, couples, and families alike.

Best of all, on cruises, the only schedule you have to follow is making sure you are back onboard by sailing time, so you can explore the destinations how you want to—alone or on a group excursion.

The downside, of course, is that dreaded solo supplement (when prices are based on double occupancy so you basically have to pay for two to get a private room). But with demand for solo cruising, particularly among women, on the rise, many cruise lines are responding with special sailings during which they either eliminate or reduce the upcharge for having your own cabin.

Here are five of our top picks for cruises for solo travelers.

1. Explore Sicily on Sea Cloud’s private yacht-style cruises

Suggested itinerary: Scenes of Sicily , June 24 to July 1, 2024, from $6,995 per person

Ever dream of traveling the world on a sailboat? Sailing aboard Sea Cloud’s three tall ships feels like having a friend with their own private yacht inviting you aboard. This year, Sea Cloud is waiving the single supplement on select sailings, including its “Scenes of Sicily” itinerary on Sea Cloud II , a sailing ship with a maximum capacity of 94 passengers. Set off under full sails for a round-trip journey from Malta, then circumnavigate the Italian island with stops at its premier ports for private yachts. Explore Mount Etna, Europe’s most active volcano; Ortigia’s ancient ruins and the baroque churches and palazzi of Noto; a private palazzo and the magnificent Cappella Palatina in Palermo; and the volcanic panorama of Taormina with its romantic alleys and flower-covered stairways. The intimate atmosphere on this small ship encourages getting to know your fellow passengers and crew. Most meals are served on the upper deck, with open seating for easy mingling.

2. A river cruise through French wine country with Uniworld

Suggested itinerary: Uniworld Boutique River Cruises’ eight-day Brilliant Bordeaux journey, starting at $2,999 per person

My first-ever small-ship experience was a European river cruise. And I was immediately hooked. While river cruises can conjure images of older retired couples on cookie-cutter boats, that is changing, thanks in part to river cruise lines like Uniworld Boutique River Cruises . Uniworld is a luxury river cruise line that stands out for its above-par service, ornately decorated ships, and top-notch local and regional cuisine and wine. The company says it has seen a 31 percent increase in solo travelers from 2019 to 2023—with a 61 percent increase in female solo travelers. In response, Uniworld is waiving the single supplement (through the end of April) on some of its most popular sailings, including one of my favorites: the wine-filled “Brilliant Bordeaux” journey along France’s Garonne, Dordogne, and Gironde rivers aboard the recently revamped 124-passenger S.S. Bon Voyage . My favorite spot onboard is the Soleil Deck, complete with a blue-tiled infinity pool and open-air, casual French bistro-style cuisine. Uniworld offers an intimate and hassle-free travel experience for solo travelers. Fares are all-inclusive and cover airport transfers, daily excursion options, onboard entertainment, farm-to-table dining, and wine and spirits.

3. Sail the Caribbean with renowned luxury cruise line Crystal

Suggested itinerary: Crystal’s San Juan to San Juan , December 9 to 16, 2024, starting at $3,000 per person

Looking for a larger ship with more amenities? Crystal, one of the pioneers of luxury, all-inclusive ocean cruising, offers reduced fares for solo travelers on select sailings on the Crystal Serenity and Crystal Symphony , including this preholiday Caribbean cruise that starts and stops in San Juan, Puerto Rico—with no other repeat ports, of course. Enjoy the sugar sand and clear waters of the Dominican Republic, St. Lucia, Dominica, Antigua, and the British Virgin Islands. Onboard, there’s a swimming pool, pickleball courts, and some of the finest dining (and service) at sea. Both ships, which hold just over 700 passengers, have nine dining options, including the only Nobu restaurants at sea. With so many dining choices, bars, an extensive spa, and all the amenities of larger ships, solo travelers can easily find a place to mingle or relax on their own.

4. Explore the Croatian coast in style

Suggested itinerary: Cruise Croatia’s seven-night Dubrovnik to Split sailing, from $1,495 per person

If you want to go really small, Cruise Croatia operates a fleet of yachts that is increasingly attracting solo travelers, particularly women age 45 and up, according to the cruise line. And there are not many places more beautiful to sail than along the coast of Croatia . Wander the historic towns and take a plunge off the side of the yacht into the teal-blue, crystal-clear waters of the Aegean Sea on a Cruise Croatia sailing from Dubrovnik to Split on one of its two deluxe 38-passenger ships. The brand offers 8 to 10 supplement-free cabins for single guests on dedicated sailings. Once those are sold out, solo guests can get a cabin on a lower deck for 60 percent off the double fare. And next year, the company is planning to run two departures exclusively for solo travelers.

Six passengers on a Zodiac boat in the Galágapos

5. An expedition cruise in the Galápagos

Suggested itinerary: The nine-night Galápagos aboard on National Geographic Endeavour II , starting at $6,605 per person

Expedition cruises by their nature tend to attract younger—or at least younger-minded—and more active cruisers. But they can also be pricey. For solo travelers willing to take a bit of a gamble, Lindblad Expeditions (which partners with National Geographic on its expedition cruises) will pair guests of the same gender together. If a roommate isn’t found, you’ll get the double-occupancy cabin at the singe rate. And the line’s culture is based on the belief that just because a guest is traveling solo doesn’t mean they are traveling alone. The voyages are designed to make traveling alone easy with open seating in the dining room and small exploration groups. On this classic 10-day Galápagos sailing , learn how to capture the best photos of giant turtles, blue-footed boobies, and sea lions from National Geographic photography expert Rich Reid. National Geographic Endeavour II has 52 outside cabins and suites, all with ocean views.

Ship: Crystal Symphony. Crystal is getting there, but still has some glitches compared to the last cruises in Jan 2021 (we were on the Symphony on its last sailing). Having first sailed on Crystal in May 1994--and proudly watched as they continued their string of "best ship" wins for many years, Crystal will have to do a lot to ever get back there.

  10. Review of 'Crystal Symphony' from Relaunched Crystal Cruises

Gone was much, but not all, of the more traditional wooden cruise ship decor that I recalled dominating the cabins and public areas, replaced almost entirely across the board with Italian marble, glass, and fabrics with a much more contemporary flair. The Bistro on the Crystal Symphony serves up coffee, pastries and light bites.

  12. Review: The Return of Crystal Symphony

When I first sailed onboard Crystal Cruises' Crystal Symphony for its maiden season in 1995, little did I know that I would be returning to the ship for the brand's relaunch in 2023. My history with the luxury cruise line actually goes even further back — to its inception, in fact, when my parents and I embarked on Crystal's first-ever voyage in 1990 on the since-departed Crystal Harmony.
