Experience Great Lakes History on Glass Bottom Shipwreck Tours in Michigan

Though Great Lakes waterways are picture-perfect on a calm day, rough seas and unpredictable storms have claimed many ships too, giving Michigan a rich shipwreck history . The best way to see that history up close is on glass bottom shipwreck tours in Michigan .

Because these waters have claimed so many ships, the lake bottoms are dotted with schooners, steamers, and barges, many of which are carefully preserved.

Have you ever wondered what it would be like to see those shipwrecks up close? If you have, you’re in luck because there are several opportunities in Northern Michigan and the Upper Peninsula for you to see these beautiful relics.

Alpena Shipwreck Tours - Alpena, Michigan - Lake Huron

Glass Bottom Shipwreck Tours on Lake Huron

If you’re seeking out glass bottom boat shipwreck tours in Michigan, start on Michigan’s Sunrise Side along the shores of Lake Huron in Alpena & Cheybogan.

Alpena Shipwreck Tours | Alpena MI

Alpena, and Lake Huron by extension, are home to the Thunder Bay National Marine Sanctuary , which protects almost 100 shipwrecks.

Board the Lady Michigan and prepare for an unforgettable shipwreck tour in Lake Huron’s Shipwreck Alley, complete with friendly narration by your guide.

There’s something that’s equally fascinating and eerie about seeing these incredible ships at the bottom of the lake, and a tour guide is on hand to answer all your questions.

The Lady Michigan has plenty of room to explore and many of the wrecks are still intact, making for a great experience as you see Great Lakes history up close.

Unique tour to see wreck remnants, not really recognizable as intact ships. The glass-bottom boat is an easy way to glimpse what divers in the area scout out, and makes for a nice afternoon on Lake Huron. Be aware that getting to and from the actual shipwreck sites takes up the majority of the two-hour time frame. Crew was friendly and entertaining, and offered up some bits of history. – Walker H. via TripAdvisor

Shipwreck Exhibit At Great Lakes Maritime Heritage Center, Alpena - Best Things To Do In Alpena

When you’re done with the tour, make sure you leave time to visit the Great Lakes Maritime Heritage Center in Alpena.

Admission is free and you can learn about and explore more of Lake Huron’s shipwrecks. There are lots of placards and exhibits to see and there are immersive exhibits as well. You can walk over the deck of a full-size schooner and feel what it’s like to be underwater by walking through dive tubes.

The visitor center is open year-round and is fun for all ages. It’s visited by nearly 100,000 people each year, so you know you’re in for something special when you visit.

Nautical North Family Adventures - Cheboygan, Michigan - Lake Huron

Nautical North Family Adventures | Cheboygan MI

Continue your quest for glass-bottom boat shipwreck tours in Michigan by continuing up the Lake Huron coast to Cheboygan.

Board the Yankee Sunshine with Captain Jenn for a tour from Nautical North Family Adventures. The tour company, which began operations in 2018, offers an experience that’s equal parts educational, fun, and intimate. You can even borrow the company Go-Pro to document your awesome adventure!

Cast off from port and make your way down the Cheboygan River to Lake Huron. Once you’ve hit the big lake, you can see three different lighthouses as well as three different shipwrecks from as far back as 1891 and as recently as 2010.

If you really want a unique experience , try a sunset cruise where the shipwrecks are illuminated by underwater lights.

We had an awesome trip starting at the Marina and heading up the Cheboygan River through the Cheboygan lock and up to just a little past the confluence with the Black River. The weather was perfect and the fall leaf color was getting closer to peak. We didn’t realize there would be a luncheon, so that was a great bonus. The food was plentiful, unique, and delicious (and I’m a picky eater)! We also got to lock through both ways and learned about the history of the lock and the whole area. We don’t have to go all the way to Sault Ste. Marie to watch the boats in a lock. All-in-all, it was a wonderful experience and we highly recommend it. – Pat K. via TripAdvisor

Glass Bottom Shipwreck Tours - Munising, Michigan - Lake Superior

Glass Bottom Shipwreck Tours on Lake Superior

Munising is adored by Michiganders and out-of-state visitors alike for its trips along Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore.

But if you visit, Munising, you absolutely must leave time to do a glass bottom boat tour.

Glass Bottom Shipwreck Tours | Munising MI

Munising’s Shipwreck Tours are some of the oldest in the nation and offer visitors a chance to see the underwater wonders of Lake Superior. It’s one of the few places where you can see these turn-of-the-century wrecks on a glass bottom boat.

Trips are seasonal and last about two hours. Excited visitors can see two different shipwreck sites, including the remains of a fully intact wooden ship from the mid-1800s, the Bermuda . You can also see the remains of the Herman H. Hettler who wrecked when seeking shelter in Munising Harbor in November 1926.

Above water, there’s a chance to see Lake Superior’s sandy beaches, a historic lighthouse, and the beautiful shoreline along Munising Bay. All in all, it makes for a fun day of sightseeing and exploring!

This is a must-do! The main draw is, obviously, seeing sunken ships through the glass-bottom sections of the boat. But there are so many more things to see! The views above the water are absolutely beautiful, & our “all-girl Yooper-crew” gave us nuggets of knowledge along the way. Every single thing about this boat ride was just fabulous, & I strongly encourage everyone even mildly curious to DO THIS! – Kate S. via TripAdvisor

Experiencing Glass Bottom Boat Shipwreck Tours in Michigan

There’s no doubt about it: Glass bottom boat shipwreck tours in Michigan are memorable, exciting, and oh so thrilling.

Here’s what one of our writers had to say about their experience seeing Lake Superior shipwrecks in Munising Bay up close:

Three shipwrecks, one lighthouse, and close-up views of Munising Bay.

I departed Munising on a foggy morning around 10 am, excited for what I was going to see. I have to say that the fog added a little flair to the trip, as it brings this ominous illusion to the boat. I did hear that the shipwrecks are easier to see when it is bright and sunny out, but I had no problem seeing them in the fog. The first site on the trip is the wreck of the Bermuda , a ship that sunk in 1870 from excess weight and a leak in the hull. This shipwreck is less than 12 feet under the surface of the water, letting all the passengers on the glass bottom boat see the ship clearly. After this sight, the tour continues around Grand Island in Munising Bay and pulls up close to the East Channel Lighthouse for some photo opportunities and to tell a little history about the lighthouse. The lightkeeper raised his family on Grand Island making a great living of $400 dollars a year plus benefits (wood for his fire!). The second shipwreck comes shortly after a great view of the Grand Island shoreline. The Herman H. Hettler crashed into a rock reef during a storm in late 1926 and was slowly broken apart from multiple winter storms. While all 16 of the crew members escaped, nothing was salvageable and the steamer was left to be broken apart by nature. Today the wreck is scattered around the bay in varying depths. Still, plenty to see, including the captain’s bathtub and commode! On the way back to the Munising docks, the shipwreck tour shows one more shipwreck that is an unknown wreck . So far no one has been able to identify the story of this ship and there are no records of any ships of this style disappearing. Maybe you can help solve the mystery? This two-hour tour was interesting as well as being educational! The things that you can see from the glass bottom are amazing. History buffs and children will enjoy this ride – even the youngest children enjoy watching the fish under the surface.

Silver Springs State Park: Things to Do, Glass Bottom Boats + Tips

April 3, 2023 //  by  Florida Trippers

If you have never been to Silver Springs State Park, you are in for a real treat! The springs and park here is a natural wonder that brings Florida beauty to a whole new level.

Formally known as Silver River State Park, this park is located on the Silver River (hence the past name) in Marion County. It is, in fact, one of Florida’s first tourist attractions.

Since its opening in the 1870s, humans have been captivated by the beauty and crystal clear waters of one of America’s largest springs. Experience a Silver Springs Glass Bottom boat tour, go kayaking, or explore the museum and nearby village! There’s plenty to do!

A womankind a red, floral dress and sunglasses sits at the Silver Springs State Park entrance in Florida.

Where is Silver Springs State Park?

If you’re looking for an exact address, go ahead and put in 5656 E Silver Springs Blvd, Silver Springs, FL 34488! When inputing this address your GPS will tae you to this stunning park.

Within the nature area– that features springs, museums, a nearby RV park and a resort– this must see location is in North Central Florida. It is just east of Ocala!

There are two entrances here: the main entrance and the camping entrance. Use the main entrance to go toward the springs, experience boat tours, get rentals, and explore gardens as well as food and retain. This entrance is located right off State Road 54!

To use the camping entrance, put the address of 1425 NE 58th Avenue, Ocala, FL 34470. This will take you to the camp areas, as well as the Pioneer Village and Silver River Museum/Education Center! It is just off County Road 35.

The Florida silver springs entrance marks the park's beginning with signs and gazebos.

How Much Does it Cost to Visit Silver Springs?

Ocala Florida Silver Springs is a great day trip, and a cheap one at that! For single-occupant vehicles, it is $5 to get in. It is an additional $2 for pedestrians, bicyclists, extra passengers, and for those who hold an Annual Individual Entrance Past.

It costs $4 to launch a vessel– this money acts as a fee– and you can launch a personal canoe or kayak. To go on tours, your prices range. Glass Bottom tours are $12-25; canoes are $35-60, paddle boards are $30-55, and kayaks are $25-60.

Lastly it is $2 for entrance to the Silver River Museum and the Environmental Center. Make sure to check for hours before you go!

The water at Silver Springs state park is surrounded by hiking paths and trees, but the water itself is clear blue.

Are There Alligators at Silver Springs State Park?

One question people always ask about the springs in Florida centers around our lovely population of alligators. So, are there alligators at Silver Springs State Park Florida? Yes!

There is always the risk of running into wildlife when we are in their environment. It isn’t uncommon to see alligators, turtles, manatees, and many species of fish in the river here.

You may always experience sightings of armadillos, deer, turkeys, and foxes too! Just depends on where you are, and what time of year you visit!

A tiny gator floats on the surface of clear water. His eye eyes the camera, and his lower teeth jut out over his lips.

History of Silver Springs State Park

It’s been a while! Tourists and locals have been drawn to the banks of Silver River for at least 10,000 years. That’s right! It dates back to the first Neolithic people in Florida.

In the 1820s, the springs became an attraction for adventurous travelers. They explored the narrow Ocklawaha River from the intersection of St. Johns River and Silver River. They enjoyed the thick cypresses and Spanish moss!

In the 1850s, the banks of nearby Ocala grew as Silver Springs became a commercial distribution center. You’d see steamships moving crops and supplies quite often!

In the 1870s, their glass bottom boat tours began which really brought the park to fame! Other attractions where then added on, like zoological displays and demonstrations. IT became like a theme park! And in the 1900s, historic shops, boat docks and more were added.

Today the park is restored and preserved from a cultural and environmental perspective. The theme park has closed. The 4,000 aces, however, still bring tourists as they did back in the 1800s!

The Silver Springs state park has a long and complicated history, as shown in this photo, which features a sign that says "see silver springs from paradise park, for colored people."

Movies and Shows Filmed at Silver Springs

In the 1930s, Hollywood discovered Silver Springs and at least 20 movies have now been filmed here! This isn’t even including television episodes too! You may recognize other titles like:

  • Rebel Without a Cause
  • Distant Drums
  • Creature from the Black Lagoon
  • Cross Creek
  • Down to the Sea

For more information check out the filming location of the IMBD page that is connected to Silver Springs State Park!

A large stature stands on one of the paths of the park, marking the history and insight of some of the movies filmed in this area-- you can still see movie props.

Map of Silver Springs State Park

If you are a visual person, seeing a map of the springs may help you! This puts locations into perspective, plus it gives you insight as to where parking is, where the river starts, where launches are and more. So here is the map!

The silver springs state park map breaks down where the launches are, the arc of the tour, shows park activities and more.

Glass Bottom Boats at Silver Springs

The glass bottom boats at Silver Springs are world famous! These boats have wowed visors and brought tourists and locals alike since the 1870s. They offer breathtaking views of the underwater life that bring the springs to life.

When renting a glass bottom boat at Silver Springs, you should at least be aware that these were invited here! The springs allow tours aboard these historic boats. Their sheer size allows you to explore the river’s head spring– Mammoth Spring.

You can also explore many other beautiful feeder springs when booking one of the glass bottom boats in Ocala tours. Guests see countless species of fish, ancient Native American artifacts, and even underwater movie props when touring!

Choose your adventure wen you go. All tours run every 15-20 minutes, year round. You can also book one extended tour. However, make sure to purchase your tickets in advance as they sell out quickly! And always arrive 30 minutes before your departure time! Check out more information at the Silver Springs Official Website!

Please note that some for the glass bottom boats in Florida are also accessible! Just make sure to check respective dates and times before booking!

Canoeing and Kayaking at Silver Springs State Park

The Silver River flows for 5 miles, making it the perfect places to paddle. With a wide, wild and scenic path, explore the heartland of Florida either on canoe, kayak, or even a paddle board!

You can either bring your own or rent canoes, kayaks or the stand-up paddle boards. Enjoy the pristine and unspoiled river. Once you complete the five miles, transportation is provided to return back upstream.

You can also opt in for a shorter excursion, which is a one and two hour “out and back” excursion. Please do note that rentals are available on a first come first serve basis, and animals are not allowed on the watercraft.

A couple paddles down a river at Silver Springs state park in a double canoe.

Swimming at Silver Springs in Ocala

We can all imagine how badly we want to jump into the crystal clear waters of Silver Springs. However, you cannot swim here! There is NO SWIMMING at Silver Springs.

Although we know this is sad, there is still so much to do. Go on a boat ride, rent a kayak, hike or camp. The parks and springs are still worth it, even if you aren’t directly in the water!

The clear water of the rivers and springs go up against a dense, green ecosystem.

See the Wild Monkeys at Silver Springs

Silver Springs are home to at least 300 rhesus macaques, which is a monkey native to south and Southeast Asia! These monkeys are descendants of the theme-park escapes from park’s history.

If you are lucky, you can see one of these monkeys now in its natural habitat. In the wild, witness them flock together, hear them talk, or more! These monkeys bring in many tourists. I was even lucky enough to see one! Just don’t feed or touch these animals!

A wild monkey in a tree is spotted at silver springs state park-- this isn't uncommon. They are descendants from the time the park was a theme park.

Hiking in the State Park

Discover a variety of hiking and nature trails at Silver Springs. These trails range in length: you can take one that is less than a mile, or tap in at a 4.1 mile loop. Some of the most famous trails include the Creek trail, the Spring Connector Trail, the Sandhill trail, and even the Sinkhole Trail & Old Field loop.

When choosing to hike, make sure to bring a map and dress appropriately. You are in Florida, so plenty of water, sunblock and insect repellent is a must! If yo decide to tackle all 15 miles of trails, take your time. The environment surrounding the trails is to die for! The images are something you don’t want to rush pass. Keep your eyes out for wildlife too!

This side of the Silver Springs State park show the hiking trails and breakdown of what there is to do in this Ocala adventure park!

Camping and Lodging at Silver Springs

Would you believe us if we said that Silver Springs offers some of the best camping cabins in the state?! Well they do! These springs offer cabins, RVs, tent sites, and group primitive camp sites at fair rates with great locations.

The cabins are located beneath shady oaks and accommodate up to six people. They have dining areas, bedrooms, one bathrooms, a full kitchen, and a fireplace! RV and tent sites are spacious and have water and electric hook ups.

Lastly, if you decide to take it to nature and go primitive camping, rest in the shadow oaks near picnic tables and fire rings. Non-portable water is available here, but shower facilities are not. Book online to reserve spots, and book early!

By the entrance and marking some hiking trails is a big fountain at silver springs. It is surrounded by flora and fauna.

FUN EVENING ON THE WATER!

This was so much fun! They provide everything you need to have a great time. I went solo and have kayaked many times before. The catfish you feed are everywhere and there is a ton of other wildlife to enjoy along the way to the bridge. There is a phone number you call in to, to be able to hear the guide talk the entire time. I brought my headphones to listen. Its kayaking and you will get wet.

The experience was great! Absolutely 10/10. The guides were fun and had some great commentary and knowledge on the area and sea life. The water was calm and not being in the sun was a big plus for me. Getting to see through the kayak is so fun we got to see so much! If family comes out here again I’d definitely go again! If you’re thinking about booking this let this be the review that tells you DO IT! You won’t regret it. I made memories I’ll carry forever.

This was the best part of our trip! So much fun! Call ahead for reservations, well in advance. We had 5 nights on our trip and I called as soon as we arrived in St. Pete, and they only had an opening on our last night. I was worried since we had little to none kayak experience, but we did fine. The tour guide was excellent. We mainly saw catfish, but we found a few different types of crabs and the tour guide pulled them out for anyone who wanted to hold. Weather was perfect! We highly recommend. It is a must do!

Fun Date! The weather was perfect. The water was very calm and it was a peaceful evening on the water with no mosquitos either. You go slowly enough that you do not need to be in shape to paddle. The people helping you in the kayak are patient and kind and keep you dry. It was so fun to feed the fish and actually touch them when they came to the surface. The bottoms of the boat are not glass, but plastic. You mostly see the fish beside your boat, not underneath, but it was a worthwhile, laid back tour all ages would enjoy!

  • Expocentre Exhibition Complex;
  • and other famous sights.

You will learn about the different epochs of the city from the foundation in 1147 till Soviet times of 20 th  century.

Moscow River

Moskva river has the form of a snake and is the main waterway of Moscow, consisting of a cascade of reservoirs. Within the city, Moskva river is 80 km long, 120 m - 200 m wide and up to 14 m deep. The narrowest part of the river is the Kremlin area in the city center, and the most extensive is around the Luzhniki Stadium in the south.

Bridges in Moscow

Undoubtedly, bridges and embankments are among the most scenic spots and main attractions of Moscow. Plus, they are so romantic.

  • Bolshoy Kamenny Bridge –  Great Stone Bridge –  is the main bridge of Moscow . The first stone bridge was constructed here in the 17th century.
  • Patriarshy Bridge  is one of the youngest pedestrian bridges, built in 2004. The bridge connects the iconic Christ the Saviour Cathedral with funky Bersenevskaya embankment, extremely popular place among locals for its trendy art galleries, cafes and panoramic views. Patriarshy Bridge used to be a shooting location for ex-Russian President Dmitry Medvedev's New Year speech to the nation.
  • Borodinsky Bridge,  erected in honor of the 100th anniversary of the glorious victory in the Battle of Borodino (which every Russian kid knows about), a fierce legendary battle during the Russo-French war of 1812.
  • Bagration Bridge  one of the  pedestrian bridges with most picturesque views of the Moskva River with its numerous upper-level observation platforms. The bridge was erected to celebrate the 850th anniversary of Moscow city in 1997.
  • Krymsky Bridge  used to be in Top 5 Europe’s longest bridges some 100 years ago. The bridge got its name after the ancient Krymsky ford which Crimean Tartars used to invade Moscow in the 16 th  century.

Embankments of Moscow

Moscow river boats 37 embankments, the most popular being Kremlevskaya, Sofiyskaya, Pushkinskaya, Vorobyovskaya and Kolomenskaya.

You can get the most spectacular views of the Kremlin from  Kremlevskaya and Sofiyskaya embankments.

  • Pushkinkaya embankment  is the most romantic in Moscow. It meanders along Gorky Park and Neskuchnyi garden and is rich for all kinds of entertainment as well as cozy nooks, including Olivkovy beach, the famous Zeleny theater as well as a pier for river cruisers.
  • Vorobyevskaya embankment  is part of Sparrow Hills nature reserve. This place opens a beautiful panorama of the river and city from the observation deck and is considered to be the place for taking serious decisions in life.
  • Embankment in Kolomenskoye  Museum-Reserve has a special charm due to its peculiar geographical relief. The boat trip around Kolomenskoye would be the most peaceful in your life.
  • Taras Shevchenko embankment  is popular among photographers for its modern Moscow City skyscrapers. Highly recommended for your night boat trip.
  • Embankments of Moscow are the pride of the capital. A distinctive feature of each of the promenades is its architecture and beautiful views. In addition, almost all the embankments of Moscow have a rich history and a lot of notable buildings.

Different epochs

Taking a walk along the Moskva River by boat, you will witness the architecture of Moscow from different eras and styles. Archaeological studies indicate that already in the XI century there stood a fortified settlement on Borovitsky hill, which is now called the Kremlin. Little fortress could not accommodate all the residents of the rapidly growing city, and the Grand Duke ordered the construction of a new Kremlin, larger than the former.

Boat trip around Kolomenskoe Park

Moscow river boat trip starts from the pier Klenovy (Maple) Boulevard and provides reat views of Nicholas Perervinsky monastery.

Nicholas Perervinsky monastery was founded at the time of the Battle of Kulikov (1380). The monastery, got its name from the surrounding area – “Pererva”, which can be translated like “tear off” and because of the location –  here it abruptly changed its course, turning to Kolomna, standing on the opposite bank.

Nowadays Kolomenskoye is State Art, Historical, Architectural and Natural Landscape Museum-Reserve, which doors are open to everyone who wants to get in touch with the ancient history of Russia.

Take a break from the big city hustle in the shady parks and gardens of the Kolomenskoe Museum-Reserve. Don’t miss a wonderful Church of the Ascension and Tsar Alexey’s Palace in Kolomenskoye!

Monasteries and temples

  • Novospassky Monastery
  • Founded in the 13th century on the site where now is located the Danilovsky monastery. After a few decades, in 1330, Ivan Kalita moved the monastery onto the Borovitskii hill of the Kremlin. However, in the 15th century, Spassky Monastery again moved, this time to a more spacious place on Krasnoholmskaya waterfront.
  • Church of St. Nicholas in Zayaitskom
  • Erected in the middle of the XVIII century in baroque style. The building survived after the 1812 fire, but the utensils were destoyed. Parishioners collected donations and restored the temple on their own. In Soviet times, it was closed and re-opened only in 1992.
  • Cathedral of Christ the Savior
  • The church was originally erected in honor of the victory over Napoleon and was being under construction for long 44 years. Notoriously demolished in 1937 to be a giant swimming pool under open sky. The current building was constructed in 1990s. It is the tallest and one of the largest Orthodox churches in the world.
  • The temple was built in 1679-82, during the reign of Tsar Fedor Alekseevich, in late Muscovite Baroque style and can be characterized as bonfire temple. Each gable is a symbol of a heavenly fire.
  • Novodevichy Convent
  • The most famous concent and monastery in Moscow, presumably founded in 1524. Novodevichy’s status has always been high among other monasteries, it was in this monastery where the women of the royal blood, the wives of Tsars and local rulers of Moscow were kept in prison as nuns.
  • St. Andrew’s church  (male acts as Compound Patriarch of Moscow)
  • St. Andrew’s church stands right on the slopes of the Sparrow Hills, on the way down to the Moskva River, on the territory of the Nature Reserve “Sparrow Hills”. The monastery is small in size but is very cozy. It’s situated in a quiet courtyard surrounded by temples, fruit trees and flowers.

Cruising the Moskva River: A short guide to boat trips in Russia’s capital

glass bottom boat tour up

There’s hardly a better way to absorb Moscow’s atmosphere than on a ship sailing up and down the Moskva River. While complicated ticketing, loud music and chilling winds might dampen the anticipated fun, this checklist will help you to enjoy the scenic views and not fall into common tourist traps.

How to find the right boat?

There are plenty of boats and selecting the right one might be challenging. The size of the boat should be your main criteria.

Plenty of small boats cruise the Moskva River, and the most vivid one is this yellow Lay’s-branded boat. Everyone who has ever visited Moscow probably has seen it.

glass bottom boat tour up

This option might leave a passenger disembarking partially deaf as the merciless Russian pop music blasts onboard. A free spirit, however, will find partying on such a vessel to be an unforgettable and authentic experience that’s almost a metaphor for life in modern Russia: too loud, and sometimes too welcoming. Tickets start at $13 (800 rubles) per person.

Bigger boats offer smoother sailing and tend to attract foreign visitors because of their distinct Soviet aura. Indeed, many of the older vessels must have seen better days. They are still afloat, however, and getting aboard is a unique ‘cultural’ experience. Sometimes the crew might offer lunch or dinner to passengers, but this option must be purchased with the ticket. Here is one such  option  offering dinner for $24 (1,490 rubles).

glass bottom boat tour up

If you want to travel in style, consider Flotilla Radisson. These large, modern vessels are quite posh, with a cozy restaurant and an attentive crew at your service. Even though the selection of wines and food is modest, these vessels are still much better than other boats.

glass bottom boat tour up

Surprisingly, the luxurious boats are priced rather modestly, and a single ticket goes for $17-$32 (1,100-2,000 rubles); also expect a reasonable restaurant bill on top.

How to buy tickets?

Women holding photos of ships promise huge discounts to “the young and beautiful,” and give personal invitations for river tours. They sound and look nice, but there’s a small catch: their ticket prices are usually more than those purchased online.

“We bought tickets from street hawkers for 900 rubles each, only to later discover that the other passengers bought their tickets twice as cheap!”  wrote  (in Russian) a disappointed Rostislav on a travel company website.

Nevertheless, buying from street hawkers has one considerable advantage: they personally escort you to the vessel so that you don’t waste time looking for the boat on your own.

glass bottom boat tour up

Prices start at $13 (800 rubles) for one ride, and for an additional $6.5 (400 rubles) you can purchase an unlimited number of tours on the same boat on any given day.

Flotilla Radisson has official ticket offices at Gorky Park and Hotel Ukraine, but they’re often sold out.

Buying online is an option that might save some cash. Websites such as  this   offer considerable discounts for tickets sold online. On a busy Friday night an online purchase might be the only chance to get a ticket on a Flotilla Radisson boat.

This  website  (in Russian) offers multiple options for short river cruises in and around the city center, including offbeat options such as ‘disco cruises’ and ‘children cruises.’ This other  website  sells tickets online, but doesn’t have an English version. The interface is intuitive, however.

Buying tickets online has its bad points, however. The most common is confusing which pier you should go to and missing your river tour.

glass bottom boat tour up

“I once bought tickets online to save with the discount that the website offered,” said Igor Shvarkin from Moscow. “The pier was initially marked as ‘Park Kultury,’ but when I arrived it wasn’t easy to find my boat because there were too many there. My guests had to walk a considerable distance before I finally found the vessel that accepted my tickets purchased online,” said the man.

There are two main boarding piers in the city center:  Hotel Ukraine  and  Park Kultury . Always take note of your particular berth when buying tickets online.

Where to sit onboard?

Even on a warm day, the headwind might be chilly for passengers on deck. Make sure you have warm clothes, or that the crew has blankets ready upon request.

The glass-encased hold makes the tour much more comfortable, but not at the expense of having an enjoyable experience.

glass bottom boat tour up

Getting off the boat requires preparation as well. Ideally, you should be able to disembark on any pier along the way. In reality, passengers never know where the boat’s captain will make the next stop. Street hawkers often tell passengers in advance where they’ll be able to disembark. If you buy tickets online then you’ll have to research it yourself.

There’s a chance that the captain won’t make any stops at all and will take you back to where the tour began, which is the case with Flotilla Radisson. The safest option is to automatically expect that you’ll return to the pier where you started.
