WHY TAKE A BIKE TOUR?

With over 26 million visitors a year, Central Park is the most visited urban park in the United States! This gem of Manhattan is beloved by New Yorkers and tourists alike.

At 843 acres (340 ha), it's larger than the country of Monaco! Its fascinating history spans two centuries of history. Needless to say, there's a lot of ground to cover when exploring Central Park!

We offer two walking tours of the park that each cover different parts, yet even combined, they still leave out the northern third of the park!

With a bike tour of Central Park, you can cover over six miles (10 km) of it without being too worn out.

And not only is an experienced tour guide a wealth of knowledge but he or she will show you the safest and most efficient way to the most famous landmarks.

Our pay-what-you-wish bike tour of Central Park operates on a limited schedule.

Therefore, we have listed a few companies with daily schedules that we recommend.

THE PAY-WHAT-YOU-WISH OPTION

Let Free Tours by 'Bike' tell you the story behind Olmstead and Vaux’s masterpiece.

You’ll see The Mall and Literary Walk majestically lined with towering elms and the 3,500-year-old Egyptian obelisk Cleopatra’s Needle.

Marvel at the splendor of Bethesda Fountain and the scenic Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis Reservoir.

We’ll watch your bikes as we give you time to climb to the top of Belvedere Castle, where you’ll get a view of the Great Meadow, Shakespeare Garden, and Turtle Pond.

You’ll see the Dakota Apartments where John Lennon was tragically assassinated and Strawberry Fields where we honor his memory today.

Of course, there will be lots of photo opportunities along the way!

*Please note that this tour is for experienced bike riders.

Sites we cover on the Central Park Bike Tour:

Central Park Bike Tour

  • Columbus Circle
  • Tavern on the Green
  • Sheep Meadow
  • The Metropolitan Art Museum
  • Jackie Onassis Kennedy Reservoir
  • Delacorte Theater
  • Swedish Cottage Marionette Theater
  • The North Woods
  • and much more.

Don't forget, some hotels, guest houses, and bed and breakfasts offer free or inexpensive bike rentals.

Also, if you have the New York Pass , bike rentals are included for free, though you may only rent them at certain locations included in the pass (not our partner shop).

Like our other tours, our expert, licensed guides work just for your appreciation. Most bike tour companies will charge you $55/person and up for a 2-hour bike tour.

With bike rentals as low as $25 for 2 hours, you could be paying $30/person and higher for a 2-hour bike tour (+tip!).

Additionally, if you want to rent your bike by the day, you usually won’t get a discount on the tour.

Please note that by NYC law, we cannot allow children under one year of age on this tour.

We ask children to be at least 12+ years old and really comfortable with riding their bikes. Tandem bikes and trailers are available.

To participate in our bike tours, you need to feel comfortable riding a bike and be in reasonably good physical condition to do so.

Additional Central Park Bike Tours

There are several additional bike tours you can take in Central Park. Some tours focus specifically on the park, but others will also take you into downtown or uptown Manhattan.

Most services are about 2 hours long, but some can last up to 4 hours.

Alternatively, you can also rent a bike and go on your own personal tour with our GPS-enabled audio tours .

Many New York tourist attraction discount passes provide discounts on some of the bike tour services we have listed above.

This section will provide a breakdown of all the Central Park bike tours you can take with a discount pass.

Depending on which pass you choose, you could save up to 55% off of the retail prices of NYC's most popular tours and attractions, in addition to the bike tours.

New York Pass

This pass includes either a bike tour or a rental from Central Park Sightseeing. Alternatively, you can also get a free bike rental from Blazing Saddles.

Since this is an All-Inclusive pass, you will receive these benefits as part of the flat price for the service.

New York Sightseeing Pass

Much like their competitors, you can also take a bike tour or enjoy a bike rental with this service.

The New York Sightseeing Pass offers the Bike and Roll Central Park tour as one of their attractions.

They also provide free bike rentals from Bike Rent NYC, allowing you to head through the park on your own if you wish.

This pass is available either as an All-Inclusive or a Flex Pass.

New York Explorer Pass

The main difference between this pass and other options is that they only offer either the Central Park Sightseeing bike tour or the bike rental from the same company.

You can't do both things with one pass, so you will need to make up your mind about which service to choose.

The Explorer Pass is like a flex pass, allowing you to pay one flat price for a set number of activities in New York City.

For more details about these opportunities, make sure to read our post about New York City Tourist Passes

Start Your Central Park Adventure

The day begins just south of Central Park at our partner office. Find your perfect bike, meet your guide for the day, and learn how to stay safe biking in the city. You'll begin your journey riding past the historic luxury hotels that line the south side of the park, including the Ritz Carlton, Plaza, and Essex House.

Movie Locations and Artistic Tributes

For decades, Central Park has been a setting for countless films and shows. Along your bike tour of the park, your guide will point out where blockbusters such as Elf , Home Alone 2 and When Harry Met Sally were shot, along with countless episodes from shows like Law and Order .

Across Central Park, artists have also developed stunning fountains, statues and gardens dedicated to the great writers of the past. In the Shakespeare Garden, examine with scent and sight the elaborate flowers that surround the statue of William Shakespeare at the center. Further north, see the dedication to Lewis' Alice in Wonderland looking over the Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis Reservoir.

Bethesda Terrace, Cherry Hill Fountain, and the Lake

At the heart of Central Park is Bethesda Terrace. The most iconic structure in the park, this attractive two-level square full of musical performers, street artists, and selfie-takers. The area designed by Frederick Law Olmsted and Calvert Vaux is one of the most popular places in the park to hang out and watch New York City life pass by.

From the Terrace you'll have a stunning view of the Bethesda Fountain and out over The Lake. Enjoy the atmosphere, take a few photos, and carry on your journey. From here, you'll ride around the Cherry Hill Fountain and to Bow Bridge for another amazing vista of The Lake and the West Side high rises.

Belvedere Castle and the Great Lawn

From the Italian for "beautiful view", the Belvedere Castle isn't really a castle but does present an amazing view of the Great Lawn. The stone structure appears as a Gothic castle, but was always intended as an observation deck within Central Park. Though kings and queens have never resided in the castle, it is a scenic location full of New York history.

Below the Castle is the Great Lawn. The lawn is the daily home of picnic lunches and relaxation for New Yorkers. It is the perfect place to lay down a blanket or throw a frisbee, and it's also home to many softball fields. On Curb Your Enthusiasm, the very friendship of Larry David and Rosie O'Donnell was threatened during a softball game here.

John Lennon and Strawberry Fields

One of the most famous names associated with Central Park is John Lennon, and your guide will walk your through his story and love for the park. After the Beatles broke up at the end of the 1960s, Lennon left Liverpool for a life in New York. An adopted son of the City, Lennon lived just a block off of Central Park.

Though Lennon passed away in 1980, the memory of Lennon in the park lives on. Your guide will lead you through Strawberry Fields to the monument in honor of the iconic musician.

Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis Reservoir

Renamed in 1994 to honor Jackie Kennedy's contribution to New York City, Central Park's largest body of water is no longer used as a reservoir, but attracts lots of aquatic birds and is surrounded by beautiful trees and landscapes. There's also a 1.58-mile track around the reservoir that's popular with joggers, walkers, and cyclists alike. Stretch your legs and enjoy a gentle ride around the water, before returning to the rental office where you'll wave goodbye to your local guide and the rest of your group.

Central Park bike ride

Paul our tour guide was awesome!

A day in the park with John

We're a family of 5 visiting from Birmingham AL and we were paired with John as our guide. The whole family loved the insights from John on the stops along the way. Never knew Central Park was that massive! 2 hours was the perfect amount of time so we could do other things with our day. And it's mainly flat so even my little ones were able to get enjoyment out of the ride and not think it was exhausting.

Fabulous 2 hour bike tour with Dan

This event was definitely worth the money. A maximum of 15 of us with our tour lead Dan, took us on a bike ride around Central Park. His knowledge was great, he made sure we were all comfortable and regularly checked in on how were doing. Dan was a fabulous guide , humorous, knowledgable, safe and fun. All the right ingridents as part of our 3 day stay in NYC.

  • Choose eco-friendly transportation: Use the highly efficient and cheap mass transit system of subways and buses in NYC to reduce carbon footprint and contribute to sustainable tourism.
  • Explore NYC's top attractions sustainably: Opt for these eco-friendly NYC tours that have a minimal impact on the environment and showcase the city's history, parks, and cultural landmarks. Walk, cycle, or take an eco sailboat tour to experience the Big Apple while being environmentally conscious.
  • Embrace sustainable food options: Join a walking food tour that showcases quintessential New York street food while walking through the city's streets instead of using vehicles. By supporting local eateries and choosing sustainable transportation, tourists can contribute to a greener New York City.

Eco-tourism and eco-travel in New York City? Yes, the world's busiest cosmopolitan does a lot to make it an environmentally friendly destination. The best example of this is its highly useful and used mass transit system of subway and bus services. Citizens and visitors are highly encouraged to use this super efficient and cheap mode of transportation within the city.

Sustainable tourism is conscientious travel, and this means being careful with the environment and respecting the community. Visitors can contribute towards this effort by choosing mass transit over taxis, staying at eco-friendly New York City hotels or homestays that make an effort to be “green,” shopping at a locally owned store, and eating at a diner or coffee shop instead of at a branded fast-food chain. Plus, New York City recycles its bottles and cans (including bottled water), and travelers can look for containers for recyclables before discarding litter.

Outside of the everyday small things that people can do to be eco-friendly during an NYC vacation, they can also be kind to the environment while sightseeing and having fun in the Big Apple. Tourists have an incredible amount of interesting things to do in NYC, and the city offers them lots of eco-friendly options while doing so - in the form of eco-friendly NYC tours. Here is a list of some of the best eco-tours in New York City that let travelers explore its top sights and sounds while ensuring a low-impact, low carbon footprint at the same time.

The following eco-friendly tours in New York City were selected based on their minimal impact on the environment, low carbon footprint, and appreciation and value of nature. From walking and cycling tours to excursions to botanical gardens and farms that highlight nature's importance, these environmentally friendly NYC tours are worth it for eco-conscious travelers.

While on the tour, visitors will explore key historical locations like Wall Street, Stone Street Historic District, Trinity Church, Federal Hall, Hamilton's grave site, etc., and discover how Lower Manhattan has transformed since 9/11.

Downtown Manhattan is one of the most densely populated places in New York City, and a walking tour is a refreshing and most eco-friendly way of seeing this iconic city.
