First, it is very important to read the most recent version of the TD First Class Travel Visa Infinite Card Benefits Coverage Guide .

They can change at any time and it is your responsibility to be aware of these insurance benefits .

Eligibility

Travel insurance coverage is only available to :

  • Primary cardholder
  • Spouse and dependent children of the primary cardholder
  • Additional cardholder
  • Spouse and dependent children of the additional holder

In addition, the card account must be in good standing . This means:

  • The Primary Cardholder has not asked TD to close the Account
  • TD has not suspended and revoked credit privileges or closed the account

TD First Class Travel Visa Infinite Card Description

Travel medical insurance.

The maximum benefit for emergency medical care is $2,000,000. To be eligible, you only need to have the card, as per the Eligibility section above. This includes the following inclusions:

  • Hospitalization
  • Physician’s fees
  • Private nursing
  • Diagnostic services
  • Ambulance and air ambulance services
  • Prescription drugs
  • Accidental dental and emergency relief of dental pain
  • Medical Appliances
  • Emergency return home
  • Transportation to the bedside and compensation for the bedside companion
  • Compensation for the travel companion
  • Meals and accommodation
  • Incidental hospital expenses
  • Vehicle return
  • Repatriation of deceased
  • Baggage return

Trip cancellation and trip interruption insurance

To receive the benefits of this insurance coverage, the full cost of your trip must be paid with your ® Visa Infinite* Card" href="https://milesopedia.com/en/go/td-first-class-travel-visa-infinite-card-qc/" rel="noindex">TD First Class Travel ® Visa Infinite* Card and/or TD Rewards points.

A trip cancellation occurs before departure .

A trip interruption occurs on or after the departure date when the trip has begun .

Eligible reasons may be:

  • The death of an insured person or an immediate family member
  • A sudden, unexpected illness or accidental injury to a person or a member of his or her immediate family
  • A natural disaster at the insured person’s principal residence
  • Weather conditions during the trip

Common Carrier Travel Accident Insurance

To be eligible for this insurance, you must:

  • Privileges under your account have not ceased or been suspended
  • The account is not more than 90 days past due
  • And the TD credit card must be in good standing

A common carrier is a land, air or water conveyance that is authorized to carry passengers for compensation. This can be a :

  • Ferry or Cruise ship
  • Bus or Train
  • Cab or Limousine

If there is an accidental death or dismemberment, the maximum benefit is $500,000 .

Delayed and Lost Baggage Insurance

In order to benefit from this insurance, the credit card must have been used to pay 100% of the airfare .

Flight and travel delay insurance

To benefit from this insurance, at least 75% of the cost of your trip must be charged to the ® Visa Infinite* Card" href="https://milesopedia.com/en/go/td-first-class-travel-visa-infinite-card-qc/" rel="noindex">TD First Class Travel ® Visa Infinite* Card .

The reason for the delay may be due to weather, an outage or a strike for example.

This flight or travel delay insurance can be up to $500 , for a delay of 4 hours or more .

Hotel/Motel Burglary Insurance

This is for hotel and motel reservations in Canada and the United States only. At least 75% of the total cost of the stay must be charged to the card. The use of TD Rewards points is also valid under certain conditions.

The maximum amount is $2,500 .

Collision and damage insurance for rental vehicles

  • Pay for the car rental at the rental agency with the ® Visa Infinite* Card" href="https://milesopedia.com/en/go/td-first-class-travel-visa-infinite-card-qc/" rel="noindex">TD First Class Travel ® Visa Infinite* Card MD (payment with TD Rewards points is accepted, under certain conditions).
  • Refuse to purchase the Collision Damage Waiver (CDW ) or an equivalent coverage from the rental agency and have it written into the contract

The car rental covers up to 48 consecutive days and the manufacturer’s suggested retail price (MSRP) of the car must be under $65,000 . Some types of vehicles are not insured.

Purchase Assurance and Extended Warranty Protection

Purchase insurance covers items purchased with the ® Visa Infinite* Card" href="https://milesopedia.com/en/credit-cards/td-first-class-travel-visa-infinite-card-qc/" rel="noindex">TD First Class Travel ® Visa Infinite* Card for 90 days from the date of purchase . If the item is lost, stolen or damaged, it will be replaced or repaired with this insurance.

Extended warranty protection extends the manufacturer’s warranty up to one year . It begins after the manufacturer’s warranty expires and the item must be purchased with the Card.

Mobile Device Insurance

Did your new smartphone or tablet have a major accident and stop working? Mobile device insurance can come to the rescue, up to a maximum of $1,000 in reimbursement!

To qualify, at least 75% of the total cost of the device must be charged to the TD First Class Travel Visa Infinite Card. Under certain conditions, insurance is also eligible if the total cost of the device is financed through a plan with monthly payments .

Emergency travel assistance services

It is not really an insurance, but rather a help to solve a problem during a trip in unknown land. They do not offer payment or refunds. They are more of a medical second opinion or will tell you what to do if you don’t know what to do when you are in total panic.

What To Do After Common Car Accidents

Fender benders and minor accidents are the most common auto insurance claims we receive. So, what do you do if you find yourself in one of these situations?

  • Before taking any other steps, make sure that everyone involved is safe and contact emergency services if needed
  • Report the incident to TD Insurance within seven days to allow us to get started on your claim
  • Take note of your surroundings: Where the incident took place, the weather conditions, and location are details that may be helpful to provide

Or if you’re halfway through your dream vacation and a family member back home is hospitalized, without travel insurance the costs to get to their bedside are yours alone. But where’s the best place to buy travel insurance?

Airlines and online booking platforms offer coverage as an add-on when you reserve your trip and it’s available through banks, travel agencies and insurance companies. Many credit cards also offer various forms of travel insurance as part of the benefits you pay for in your annual fee.

Each option protects you in different scenarios. With so much variation in coverage and price, it’s hard to compare. Fortunately, we did the heavy lifting for you, examining the included benefits offered by a few popular credit cards against separately purchased policies.

Before we look at the differences, let’s look at what the policies have in common.

First, travel insurance is meant to protect against sudden, unforeseen, or unexpected situations. This means that any personal pre-existing medical conditions aren’t covered unless your coverage includes a waiver or offers a pre-existing condition exclusion. Also, travelling for elective surgery or medical treatments of any kind is also not covered.

Secondly, all policies have time limits for when you can initiate a claim (plan on filing within 30 days of the incident, although in some cases you may have longer). You’ll then have additional time to compile and submit supporting documentation. Expect to share an elaborate paper trail detailing what happened and any related expenses you incurred. Receipts are non-negotiable.

Lastly, coverage is null and void anytime it’s a result of illegal activity. You may also be denied if the cause of the incident included alcohol or drugs. It’s important to read each insurer’s list of exclusions to be clear on what is and isn’t covered. As always, an ounce of prevention may be worth a pound of cure.

Credit cards tout travel benefits as a way to offer value in exchange for annual fees. Here, we’re comparing three popular cards that offer travel insurance: The TD®Aeroplan® Visa Infinite Privilege Card , the Scotiabank Gold American Express Card and the BMO Air Miles World Elite Mastercard .

With all of these cards, eligible non-refundable expenses, such as flights or hotel accommodations, must be charged to the credit card to be included in the coverage. You must also remain a cardmember at the time you file your claim and have an account in good standing. Immediate family members are covered, assuming you paid for their travel with your card. Keep an eye on age limits for children: This varies not only by card, but by benefit. All benefits cover children up to 18, but some benefits will cover older adult children if they’re still students.

TD® Aeroplan® Visa Infinite Privilege

The TD® Aeroplan® Visa Infinite Privilege is a top-of-the-line travel credit card that offers comprehensive trip insurance, making it ideal for frequent flyers seeking extensive additional rewards. The downside? The steep $599 annual fee.

This card offers up to $5 million in emergency medical coverage for the first 31 days of your trip if you are 64 years of age or under. (If you’re 65 years of age or older, coverage is for the first four consecutive days of your trip.) Benefits under this coverage include fees for hospital accommodation, physician’s services, lab tests and other diagnostics, ambulance transportation and emergency return home. There’s also specific provisions for private duty nursing (up to $5,000) accidental dental ($2,000 maximum), costs to bring a bedside companion to you if you’re hospitalized (round-trip air fare and up to $1,500 for meals and accommodation), and return of your travelling companion, vehicle and/or dependent children.

Another valuable included benefit is  Trip Cancellation and  Trip Interruption Insurance . This coverage reimburses you for nonrefundable, prepaid expenses you incurred if you unexpectedly have to cancel the trip or have to cut the trip short. You can be reimbursed up to $2,500 per traveller with a maximum of $5,000 per trip for a trip cancellation, and up to $5,000 per traveller with a maximum of $25,000 for all insured travellers for trip interruption. Some examples of covered reasons include hospitalization or death of an immediate family member or a court subpoena.

The last major coverage this card includes is Accidental Death & Dismemberment insurance. This insurance pays out a lump sum if you lose your sight, speech, hearing, a limb, or life while travelling. The coverage maxes out at a generous $500,000.

All travellers have experienced trip delays at one point or another, for example when thunderstorms cancel your flight or your airplane has mechanical issues. With the TD® Aeroplan® Visa Infinite Privilege card, you can be reimbursed up to $1,000 if you’re delayed four hours or more for eligible causes (most commonly severe weather or mechanical issues). It will cover costs such as hotel rooms, taxis and meals.

The card also offers generous coverage  of up to $2,500 per passenger for lost luggage or $1,000 for delayed luggage after four hours so you can buy what you need while waiting for your suitcase to arrive.

  • Scotiabank Gold American Express Card

The Scotiabank Gold American Express Card is one of the top rewards cards in Canada with comprehensive travel insurance coverage and only a $120 annual fee.

Starting with the travel emergency medical coverage, this card offers up to $1 million in benefits for 25 days of consecutive travel for cardholders 64 and under, and for three days for cardholders aged 65 and above. While this maximum benefit is less than other cards, it has a long list of eligible expenses following treatment for a medical emergency including:

  • Hospital accommodation, medical expenses and doctor charges
  • Private duty nursing
  • Diagnostic services, including laboratory testing and X-rays
  • Ambulance services
  • Emergency air transport to the nearest hospital or home
  • Prescription drugs
  • Emergency dental care due to a blow to the mouth, up to $2,000
  • Medical appliances, including a sling, brace, splints or local rental of crutches, a walker or wheelchair
  • A bedside companion if you’re hospitalized for more than three days, including round-trip airfare and a subsistence allowance of up to $100 per day (maximum $1,500)
  • Vehicle return, maximum $1,000
  • Car accident assistance, if your car is disabled due to an accident, with a maximum of $200 per day for three days for accommodation, food or commercial transportation/car rental
  • Return of deceased, up to $5,000

If you need to cancel or interrupt your trip for a covered reason, such as the death of an immediate family member or a missed connection due to a mechanical delay, trip interruption coverage and trip cancellation coverage offers up to $1,500 per insured person and $10,000 per trip. And if your flight is delayed for more than four hours due to a covered reason, such as bad weather, mechanical breakdown or overbooking, this card pays up to $500 per person for expenses such a hotel, meals and sundry items, like magazines and snacks.

Lost, delayed or stolen baggage can put a damper on any trip. This card pays a maximum of $1,000 for checked bags lost by a common carrier, and up to $1,000 for the cost of buying essential items, such as clothes and toiletries, if your bags are delayed by more than four hours. This card also offers protection of up to $1,000 if your hotel or motel is burgled in the United States or Canada

While some cards have a provision for accidental death or dismemberment, the Scotiabank Gold American Express Card offers Common Carrier Travel Accident Insurance, which pays out in the event of catastrophic losses while travelling on an airplane or while in transit to or from the terminal. The maximum benefit for loss of life, total or permanent disability or multiple dismemberment is $500,000, while payout for partial dismemberment is $250,000.

BMO Air Miles World Elite Mastercard

The BMO Air Miles World Elite Mastercard is among the best Air Miles credit cards available, offering earn rates on rewards that outpace most other Air Miles cards on the market as well as decent travel insurance for a $120 annual fee.

Whether you’re travelling out of the province or out of the country, this card offers up to $5 million in coverage for eligible medical expenses for the first 15 days of travel if you are age 64 or younger. You are not eligible for coverage if you are 65 or above. Eligible medical expenses include:

  • Emergency hospital, ambulance and medical
  • Emergency air transportation or evacuation
  • Professional services of a physiotherapist, chiropractor, osteopath, chiropodist or podiatrist
  • Emergency dental
  • Transportation to bedside
  • Return of deceased
  • Hotel and meals
  • Return of vehicle

Under the Common Carrier Insurance provision (similar to Accidental Death and Dismemberment), this card pays out up to $500,000 in the event of accidental injury or death while you are entering or travelling on a common carrier.

If you need to cancel your trip before departure due to a covered reason, such as illness, complications of pregnancy (up to 31 weeks) or cancellation of a business meeting, this card offers up to $1,500 per person ($5,000 per account) in trip cancellation insurance. If you’ve already left on your trip and you need to interrupt or delay your travels, this card reimburses up to $2,000 per person (maximum $10,000 per account) under the trip interruption/trip delay coverage.

Flight Delay Insurance provides $500 in coverage if your flight is delayed more than four hours for expenses such as additional accommodation or meals.

If your bags are lost, stolen or damaged while travelling on a common carrier, Baggage Insurance pays out up to $500 per covered person ($1,000 per account per trip) and up to $500 per covered person ($1,000 per account per trip) if your bags are delayed by more than six hours, compared to four hours for the other two cards. And if your loss is due to a hotel burglary, this card pays up to $1,000 to replace or repair your personal property.

Given the included coverage available with these credit cards, how do paid policies differ? Premium prices vary based on traveller age, destination, coverage amounts and length of trip and add an extra expense to a potentially already big expenditure. Is it worth the extra cost?

Unlike credit cards, the main benefit of a standalone travel insurance plan is choice. Many offer a selection of plan options, such as an all-inclusive plan, emergency medical only or trip cancellation/interruption only. Standalone policies may feature higher coverage limits, or offer additional endorsements, such as a pre-existing condition rider, like the Stable for 3 Months add-on offered by Desjardins , that reduces your stability period (or the amount of time your health must be considered “stable” before you leave on your trip), coverage for adventurous activities that are usually excluded from travel insurance plans ( World Nomads covers more than 250) and Cancel For Any Reason (CFAR) coverage, such as that offered by CAA Travel Insurance .

While the travel insurance offered with your credit card is covered in the annual fee, you must pay for a standalone travel insurance policy, and premiums vary depending on your age, length of your trip, your answers to a health questionnaire (if required) and the amount of coverage you choose.

Here’s a deeper look at the corresponding standalone available from TD, Scotiabank and BMO to see how they compare to the credit card travel insurance.

TD Insurance Travel Insurance

TD Insurance Travel Insurance offers two single-trip insurance plans for trips outside of Canada: The Medical Plan and the Trip Cancellation and Interruption Plan. You can purchase one or both plans within a single policy. There’s also a multi-trip annual option if you travel several times within a year.

Like the TD® Aeroplan® Visa Infinite Privilege card, TD Insurance offers up to $5 million of emergency medical coverage, but there’s no stipulated days of coverage (unless you purchase a multi-trip plan). The maximum payouts are equal for benefits such as accidental dental and the costs to bring a bedside companion to you, but the standalone policy offers additional coverage including:

  • Dental treatment due to pain, up to $500
  • Paramedical services, such as a physiotherapist, up to $300 per specialist
  • Subsistence allowance due to a medical delay, up to $1,500
  • Incidental hospital expenses, such as a TV or parking, up to $500

The standalone insurance offers an update for trip cancellation insurance, up from $5,000 per trip with the card to a maximum of $25,000 with the separate policy.

It’s worth noting that the baggage insurance offered by the credit card is superior to that of the standalone policy. For example, the baggage delay benefit for the standalone policy is up to $400 after a 12-hour delay, while the credit card pays out up to $1,000 after four hours.

Scotia Travel Insurance

Scotia Travel Insurance offers comprehensive coverage in the event of a medical or travel emergency, including an all inclusive plan, emergency medical only and trip cancellation/interruption only plan. There’s also a COVID-19 Pandemic Travel Plan if you’re worried about testing positive for COVID-19 during your trip.

A big difference between the Scotiabank Gold American Express Card travel insurance and the standalone plan is the maximum emergency medical benefit: While the credit card offers a maximum of $1 million in coverage, the standalone policy offers up to $10 million in coverage, again without the trip duration restrictions of the credit card. While the credit card has a robust list of eligible medical expenses, the standalone policy is even more comprehensive, offering higher limits for emergency dental ($3,000), vehicle return ($3,000) as well additional expenses including:

  • Dental treatment due to pain, up to $300
  • Paramedical services, such as a physiotherapist, up to $700 per injury
  • Subsistence allowance due to a medical delay, up to $2,000
  • Incidental hospital expenses, such as a TV or parking, up to $300
  • Childcare expenses during hospitalization, maximum $500

Like all insurance policies, the cost of a Scotia Travel Insurance plan depends on factors such as the cost of your trip, your age and the amount of coverage you choose. With a Scotia Travel Insurance plan you can reduce your premium cost by choosing a $500, $1,000, $5,000 or $10,000 deductible, or the amount you pay before your emergency medical coverage kicks in.

While all insurance policies have stipulations and exclusions about pre-existing conditions, essentially any health condition that existed before the start of your coverage, Scotia Travel Insurance offers an Individual Medical Underwriting Plan for travellers of any age who would like their pre-existing medical conditions covered with no stability requirements.

BMO Travel Insurance

BMO Travel Insurance offers three core plans for travelling outside of Canada: The Premium Travel Plan, Travel Medical Plan and Trip Protection Plan.

Similar to the BMO Air Miles World Elite Mastercard, the paid policy offers up to $5 million in emergency medical coverage. The medical coverage options are also similar. While the standalone policy does not offer flight or travel accident coverage, the credit card offers $500,000 in Common Carrier Insurance. However, the paid policies offers superior levels of trip cancellation and trip interruption coverage.

A big plus of this plan compared to the credit card is there is no maximum age.

Main Benefits of Paid Policies

There’s no question that a paid policy greatly increases the amount of medical reimbursement available to you in case of injury or illness. In most cases, there’s also more comprehensive coverage, such as reimbursement for childcare costs in the event you are hospitalized or evacuation from a remote area.

Paid policies may provide more opportunities to customize your coverage, and offer additional riders, discounts and even specialized coverage, such as a pandemic plan.

Paid policies offer non-tangible benefits as well. Most companies include extra resources for policyholders to help you plan or research safety issues for your destination before travelling. There are also assistance hotlines you can contact while traveling to get recommendations on doctors or medical facilities abroad.

The biggest downside is that you need to shell out additional money for a standalone policy while credit card travel insurance is included in your annual fee. However, insurance is there to protect your assets in case disaster strikes, so the question remains—how much does peace of mind cost you?

Bottom Line

Credit cards offer real, tangible travel insurance benefits that can protect you from unexpected bills. However, there’s no single credit card that covers every facet of travel coverage and many travellers will prefer a more comprehensive policy, especially if you are older or have pre-existing health issues.

In general, for simple trips, credit card insurance will often suffice. But travellers looking for extensive medical and/or evacuation insurance will need to purchase a separate policy or be prepared to pay for possible expenses out of pocket. A third option is that most standalone policies offer a top-up option where you can purchase insurance in addition to an existing policy, such as a credit card.

Ultimately, there is no one-size-fits all to travel insurance. But the good news is, with all the many options on the market there is certainly one to fit your needs and your budget.

The process was straightforward, though it took about two months.

Trip Delay Reimbursement

Trip delay insurance compensates for expenses incurred due to covered travel delays. Eligible expenses may include meals and lodging, and many credit cards provide up to $500 per ticket or trip.

Most credit cards that provide trip delay reimbursement do so only for delays of six hours or longer. However, coverage limits and eligibility criteria vary between cards so it's important to familiarize yourself with your card's terms and conditions.

Travel accident insurance provides coverage in case of an accident or injury that occurs while traveling. This policy typically includes accidental death and dismemberment coverage for you and your dependents when traveling on a common carrier such as an airplane, train, or cruise ship. Coverage and amount vary by card but typically range between $250,000-$1,000,000.

Travel and Emergency Assistance Services

Travel and emergency assistance is exactly what it sounds like: A support line you can call for emergency assistance while traveling. These services may include access to a 24/7 hotline that provides medical or legal referrals, emergency cash transfers, and other help. It can be invaluable if you travel abroad and find yourself in an unfortunate situation. 

It’s important to note that travel and emergency assistance services act as facilitators. It doesn’t cover the cost of a lawyer, medical bills, or other services rendered.

Emergency Evacuation and Transportation

If a medical need arises during your trip, you can call your card's benefits administrator to arrange for emergency evacuation and transport to the nearest medical facility. Coverage only applies to the cost of evacuating and transporting covered individuals, so you'll still be on the hook for any medical care received once you're on the ground again.

The Chase Sapphire Reserve® is one of the few cards that provide emergency evacuation and transportation. This benefit can be incredibly valuable during emergencies that require urgent medical transportation or evacuation.

Emergency Medical and Dental Benefits

Emergency medical and dental coverage often can provide up to $2,500 for necessary medical or dental treatment. In most cases, you must travel 100 miles or more from home. Coverage applies to the cardholder, spouse or partner, and children. A deductible may apply, so double check your card's requirements.

Baggage Insurance

There are two types of credit card baggage insurance: Lost luggage reimbursement and baggage delay insurance. Lost luggage reimbursement compensates the value of your belongings if your checked or carry-on luggage is lost or damaged. This type of insurance typically excludes luxury goods, so you should review your card’s coverage details to determine if you need additional coverage. 

On the other hand, baggage delay insurance may reimburse you for essential purchases you must make if your baggage is delayed by six or more hours. Eligible purchases generally include clothing and toiletry purchases.

Auto Collision Damage Waiver

Auto collision damage waiver provides coverage for damage to or theft of rental vehicles when you pay for the rental with your credit card. This coverage can potentially save you money by waiving the need to purchase the rental company's waiver.

Some credit cards offer primary coverage while others offer secondary. With primary coverage, you won’t need to file a claim with your personal car insurance first. Meanwhile, secondary coverage kicks in only after your personal auto insurance rejects your claim. Some policies cover the full cost of the damaged vehicle, while others are limited to $50,000-$75,000.

When a trip goes haywire, travel insurance suddenly comes into focus. A recent spat between a Boston restaurant owner and a customer highlighted the intricacies — and far-reaching impacts — of what happens when a trip is canceled.

According to posts on X , the now-viral incident began in January when New York resident Trevor Chauvin-DeCaro became sick and was hospitalized. Because of his condition, Chauvin-DeCaro says he was no longer able to travel to Boston as originally planned. However, he said he used credit card travel insurance to be reimbursed for expenses including hotel, train and restaurant reservations.

Here’s where the story gets a bit murky. Chauvin-DeCaro and his husband were set to dine at Table, an upscale restaurant owned by Jen Royle in Boston’s North End. In screenshots posted to X from a social media exchange with what appears to be Royle, Chauvin-DeCaro is scolded for disputing the $250 reservation cancellation charge.

“I just wanted to thank you personally for screwing over my restaurant and my staff when you disputed your cancellation fee,” the message reads. “I really hope in the future you have more respect for restaurants, especially small businesses such as mine. Pathetic.”

In a heated exchange, the restaurant insists the $250 charge was a credit card dispute while Chauvin-DeCaro stresses his use of credit card travel insurance, even noting that “the decision to use [it] to cover the lofty cancellation fee was not made lightly.”

Filing an insurance claim with your credit card company is different from a dispute. For many travelers, your credit card may come with built-in travel protections and you may not even know it. Here’s how to use it properly.

How credit card travel insurance works

Whether it’s a trip across the world — or in Chauvin-DeCaro’s case, up to Boston — having travel insurance can provide major relief if things go awry. Flight delays, lost baggage, illness, injuries and other unforeseen events can disrupt even the best-laid plans.

There are dozens of credit cards with embedded travel insurance coverage, which include policies like trip interruption and cancellation ; delayed and lost baggage; rental car coverage; emergency medical assistance and more. Your credit card agreement will detail this coverage.

Many popular credit cards, like the Platinum Card from American Express or Chase Sapphire Reserve Card, offer these benefits. “If you have a card that’s travel-focused, there’s a good chance you may have travel protection benefits and not even realize it,” says Stella Shon, a credit card expert for Upgraded Points . “Every cardholder has a benefits guide online from their issuer so a first step is to check there.”

To qualify for coverage, a traveler must use that specific card to make the travel purchases and provide proof, as with any insurance policy. When the time comes to file a claim, there’s usually an option to either call a specific number to call or do it online, Shon says.

Filing an insurance claim vs. disputing a charge

While it may seem like semantics, there is a major distinction between a disputed charge and a travel insurance claim, according to Gary Leff, a credit card expert and founder of the View From the Wing blog.

“Disputing a credit card charge is for when you didn’t actually make a purchase that was billed to you, when the product or service provided isn’t what had been described, or when you don’t receive what you bought,” Leff says. In other words, a dispute addresses risks when the transaction itself goes awry. A dispute can be requested on any credit card under the Fair Credit Billing Act.

Conversely, embedded credit card travel insurance, underwritten by a third-party company and labeled as “trip interruption” or “trip cancellation,” for instance, operates differently. Typically, it’s higher-end credit cards like American Express’s Platinum Card or the Chase Sapphire Reserve Card that offer this benefit.

Card travel insurance offers reimbursement for nonrefundable payments and other trip-related expenses when incidents arise before or during a trip. While monetary compensation is a primary benefit, there is another valuable perk of travel insurance: peace of mind.

“You may have agreed to make a purchase, but circumstances outside of yours and the merchant’s control mean you’re unable to take advantage of that purchase,” Leff says. In other words, travel insurance addresses risks outside of a transaction. In either instance, travelers must provide documentation to go along with the claim.

Then, on the merchant side, there are key differences between a customer disputing a charge versus filing a travel insurance claim. Axel Hellman, co-founder of transportation company OurBus , says that “a travel insurance claim has no impact on the business.” Hellman notes that he typically wouldn’t even know if a customer uses an insurance benefit.

Neither Chauvin-DeCaro nor Royle responded to a request for an interview by The Washington Post. Spokespeople for both American Express and Chase say there wouldn’t ever be a situation in which credit card travel insurance would submit a dispute for the cardholder.

However, a disputed charge filed by a customer can have “significantly negative” consequences. “Businesses like ours are not only fined when there’s a dispute, but eventually we could lose processing privileges,” Hellman says. “That’s regardless if the dispute is valid or not.”

Meanwhile, the social media exchange between Chauvin-DeCaro and Royle continued to escalate and ended with Table’s owner threatening legal action.

A combination of an insurance claim and a dispute may have been at play here. Leff suspects that Chauvin-DeCaro may have contacted his credit card company to make an insurance claim and the agent initiated a dispute on his behalf. That further highlights the importance of travelers distinguishing between the two.

Horrible communication

Our house flooded 3 months ago. We have just had a contractor start, the house is still un-livable. We are on our second advisor and he is worse than the first. There is no communication. Our dog sitter has not been paid in 5 weeks. We don't know from one week to the next where we will be staying as they wait last minute to approve extensions at our airbnb. We can't access our clothes because we can't reach our advisor. We have called his boss and then we get an email but it doesn't last. The people they sent to evaluate and fear down have broken our front door, back door and kitchen window. If I could give them minus stars I would. I am not giving up and will be trying to reach our advisor's boss which I really hate having to do. I would not recommend them. STAY AWAY!

Worst Travel Insurance Ever - Stay way from TD

If I could give negative stars I would. Absolutely the worst customer service experience ever!! I submitted a travel claim with all the proper documentation in August and it's now March and have yet to hear anything about my claim. I call every couple of weeks and am given the run around. This company should not be in business. Shame on TD for partnering with them. It looks very bad on you.

Awful Customer Experience... Slime Fest

Moved my home insurance over to TD to bundle with my two vehicles. The first payment was security flagged and by the time I found out and called to rectify 2 weeks later, the TD advisor said that I could only keep the policy by paying for one full year in advance instead of month-to-month. I pushed back to no avail. So, I reluctantly went ahead to avoid ~$500 in penalties that would apply if I cancelled the policies & switched to another insurance provider. The agent was apologetic but ultimately this was a 'mask off' moment and quite frankly I regret bundling my insurance with TD.

Submitted an auto claim - disaster!

Submitted an auto claim, website makes it sound like a concierge service. Nothing could be further from the truth! Passed from department to department, only given 1 email for contact at any time. If they choose to ignore you for a week at a time, that's your problem. Calls constantly go to voicemail - agents do not call back. To actually talk to a person means you are on hold for 30-90 minutes - this is with a filed claim. Sent us a pay out document only to be told a week later that the numbers were inaccurate an we owned money back and the initial agreement (signed) was not valid. Asked to speak to another advisor (note you get one, no one else will talk to you), was told a manager would call me back today, didn't happen. Mechanic is asking us what is going on! All we know is that our pay out has been rescinded and no one will get back to us. There is a complaint system, but you need to reach a conclusion with the department you are talking to, who are not willing to communicate.

Early home insurance premium deduction

I recently applied for home insurance with TD Insurance. The received policy is to start on February 6, 2024. Contained on the policy is a billing date of February 6, 2024, however my credit was debited on January 8, 2024. How can they take payment for almost a whole month without providing coverage? This does not appear to be fair to me so I have today submitted a complaint to TD Insurance for an explanation. Edit: I am updating my score from 1 to 3 star because TD Insurance called me, even though I requested an email response, and provided an explanation to my complaint. Apparently a policy is billed at the time an online application is made. This was not made clear to me at the time when I made the online application. However, I appreciate that TD Insurance did not ignore my complaint.

I went online to get a quote for home insurance (already have car insurance). The computer told me to enter my address. I did several times and it told me each time to enter a valid address. I tried calling and the automated voice would not accept my birthdate. I tried calling my TD bank branch in Fredericton and was treated as a total idiot. "Did you put in your correct address, (TD has been sending my bank statements here for 35 years) did you give them your real birthdate?" I asked for a Tel # that I could speak to someone and got the same phone numbers I had already tried. I am so fed up I am cancelling everything with TD. I know I am a senior but they treated me like I was totally stupid. They are Ignorant, disrespectful and downright rude.

Customer experience - on a downward spiral

I have 2 policies with TD that renew at different times. For the ease of renewal, I have a valid CC on file. One policy was automatically renewed using the CC on file but the other was not. Why the 2nd policy was not automatically renewed using the CC file remains a mystery. TD instead thought it wiser to send me threatening letters (by post! regular and registered) without considering the fact that I may be out of country and cannot receive/see any mailed correspondence. In addition, I agree their premiums are also beginning to go up and I'm not likely to renew any of my policies going forward with them. And even if their premiums are competitive, their customer service sucks! And that's enough to still make switch.

Horrible to deal with and expensive

Horrible to deal with and expensive. All their jobs shipped to India, so always speaking with people who's first language is not English (which may be part of the problem). They have no interest in you as a long-term client, just short-term transactional focused. We were home+auto customers for 18+ years but the rates kept creeping higher and higher than competition. They act offended when you ask them to lower their rates to at least competitive levels. After you cancel they deny you cancelled, and will bill you for time you were insurance with someone else. (We asked them to play back the call where we cancelled but they can't find the call..which they say they record "quality assurance"). Then they send that bill to collections to affect your credit rating (even though they can see you were covered by a different carrier). Then they mark you as a 'delinquent' customer on database shared with other insurers which doubles all your insurance rates. I made countless calls to them but no one seems to care. I am fighting with a debt collector now, and the internal insurance "customer" database. They just want your money, anything else they just forward you around the call center. TD used to be a good company, but this is not the same company it was 20 years ago. Look elsewhere. In my opinion TD Insurance has become a fly-by-night Indian insurance company with poor ethics, poor customer service, high rates, and terrible business practices.

Worst TD travel insurance service - GlobalExcel

I reported a medical claim during my travel at the beginning of January 2023 with my TD First Class Travel Visa and waited for 1.5 hours to get the phone answered. They didn't want to take time to record my claim and just transferred me to another line which never got answered by anyone. I had to file a claim online later but never heard anything back after submitting all documents except a confirmation email that said the files were received. There's no other way to contact TD Insurance/Global Excel except by phone call which takes about 1 hour to wait. This is very disappointing. I will cancel my card and move to another bank.

Poor communication and processing; untimely

I filed a modest claim for trip delay expenses, and months later received an emailed letter stating there was missing information. I called Global Excel to see what was missing, as all receipts and filings had been done, and was advised to call TD for verification of coverage. Upon doing so, the TD agent referred me back to Global, stating they don't do that. Likely the hang-up in the system was caused by a change in my Visa number after the trip purchase, but that shouldn't leave me without a way to get reimbursement. Long hold times, nice agents, but no progress after being ping-ponged between Global and TD. Currently on hold and re-evaluating my credit card loyalty.

HOME INSURANCE CLAIM FOR TORNADO DAMAGE My property was damaged during by a tornado which occurred in May 2022 in Bell's Corners, Ottawa. The claim involved the removal of two damaged trees and replacement of the roof. The biggest complain I have was having to go through 5 different claim assessor during the whole process (TD hired temporary help to go through the large number of claims that resulted from the storm). This resulted in information being lost between assessors. But despite a few screw-ups, TD ultimately honored their insurance and paid up for all damages, minus the $2000 deductible which was part of my insurance package. I think you only really find out how good (or bad) your insurance provider is when YOU call THEM to make a claim. The process was not smooth, in large part because my file was shuffled from assessor to assessor. But in the end, TD paid up and that is what ultimately matters.

Disappointed, angry and taken advantage of by TD Insurance

I've purchased TD Insurance for my Condo for the past 6 years. The renewal letter and rate for May 31, 2023 showed the annual premium had increased by 53%. I went online to make changes (reduce coverage) and was not successful, so I phoned. I was told I could not Decrease the insurance! So I paid the premium that was on my renewal letter. I then received in the Mail, a bill for an additional $46. that I wanted to dispute... they have NO Email and the chat bot was useless. Needless to say, they got me this year, but Never Again.

Worth Travel Insurance Experience

They keep you on hold for a Minimum of 45 min then disconnect the line and never answer a call. They keep asking for the same documents after keeping you waiting for a couple of months for a result. I have a TD Credit card and service is horrible

I have a TD Credit card. I had to cancel a trip due to a health situation. The rep told me to get a doctors note. I went to my doctor and got a doctor's note (Which you have to pay $30 for). 12 weeks later, I didn't get any money back for my cancellation. I called to follow up. Now they are telling me to fill out a Medical certificate, and said that they did email me for more information. When speaking with the rep on the phone to show me that email, it was a generic email with 20 different fields of things I have already sent. Horrible process. Horrible experience. I'm cancelling my TD credit card. I cannot believe this is what I get for paying $600 a year premium.

Poor knowledge, high prices

I needed a car insurance, so I got a quote online. I tried to call, because I wanted a trailer insured as well, but could hardly understand the person due to extremely poor sound quality. In addition, the representative had poor knowledge of even the very basics, telling me that a G licence is not a full licence (false) and that they can't take my 30-year experince into account if I have a G licence. Then I was cut off on their end and they never called me back, which is just as well, as I have absilutely no reson to deal with them. The rate quoted was double of the next company I called. The automated answering system is absolutely useless, it does not understand even clearly spoken English and makes it virtually impossible to get through to a representative. There are just too many red flags with this company. I tried to call the claim department, which shoudl be open 24/7, only to be told that their office closes at 4pm. I thikn the automated system is misdirecting calls to the regular office, so good luck calling your insurance in the case of an accident after business hours.
