The All-In-One Tripod Is Here: Welcome the Innovative Chronicle Tripod by ProMaster

The All-In-One Tripod Is Here: Welcome the Innovative Chronicle Tripod by ProMaster

As a modern photographer, you are often wearing many hats. We carry a lot of gear. Well now, there is one piece of tripod kit that transforms into a standing, tabletop, monopod, or handheld tripod all-in-one for both your phone and camera. My back is thankful for innovation. Let’s dive into the details.

Physical camera stabilization is often cumbersome and heavy. You never know what you are going to need. The worst is when you are far from the home or studio and that one item would have made a world of difference. Helping to fill that gap and lighten the load on all our backs is the new Chronicle tripod by ProMaster . This one tripod transforms in so many ways that every aspect of it becomes a usable form factor for the content creator. As an Fstoppers writer, I was offered the opportunity to test out this tripod for my honest opinion, and I was surprised at how neat a gadget it is. Check it out.

The Chronicle tripod is a truly an all-in-one. Whether you need to stabilize a phone or camera and on whatever surface, this tripod transforms to do the job. It starts out as a normal tripod and ball head. Just as you’d expect, it is able to support your gear with an industry standard Arca-type dovetail quick-release camera mount. The ball head is the first surprise. It has a unique design where it flips up and converts into a phone mount. The center column is easily removed and acts as its own tabletop tripod. They call this the Flexor. Fold the legs in and it’s a handheld tripod. If you are on the go, as many of us are, having all of this function in one piece of gear is so helpful. Then, you’ve seen tripods that convert into monopods, but this one takes it even farther. The monopod transformation can be set up as a traditional pole or attach the three-legged base from the Flexor for added stability.

To test the Chronicle tripod kit, I brought it to my local parks and botanical gardens. I wanted to carry it around, see how it felt when integrated in my kit, and have the opportunity to test it in all its various forms. Macro plant photography gave me a great chance to test the Flexor as a tabletop tripode. The Flexor legs are much sturdier than other tabletop tripods that I have used. They stayed in place and did not droop or lean under the weight of my gear.

I moved on to trying both the standard and monopod styles for wide angle shots. Each mode performed well, with my favorite being the flipping head in standard tripod three-leg style. The ease of swapping from phone to camera made me use both more, as it wasn’t an annoyance to swap out one for the other. In camera mode, the ball head worked as expected without sag, thanks to the maximum load rating of 22 lbs (10 kg). It has a smooth swivel and roll to the ball. The tightening knobs are responsive and, when tightened, were solidly in place. When using a camera, the flipping aspect of the head made swapping between portrait or landscape mode easy. I made a quick video clip to show how effortlessly you can switch from horizontal to vertical.

While many would enjoy the Chronicle, I can see this tripod really serving the content creator or travel photographer. The ability to flip between phone and camera is a trademark of the versatility of the content you can create while on the go and traveling light. When in phone mode, the head is straightforward and intuitive to use. It reminded me of the type of spring clamp in a hands-free car mount, sturdy and with a firm grip. The head also has a locking collar for smooth panning or creating panoramic content.

I really appreciated how customizable this tripod kit is. Having the ability to adjust so much means it is made to suit you and how you work. One piece that was simple but stuck out for me, pun intended, is the removable control handle. You’ve likely seen these on tripods meant for video. They help for panning or camera movements. I liked that it is removable, which is not usually the case.

The Chronicle tripod also includes a few little touches that I appreciated and show off ProMaster’s attention to detail in creating this kit, the first of which are the accessory ports on either side. Just in case you do want to add anything extra on, you don’t need to craft a mount, as it is ready to go with both ¼”-20 and 3/8”-16 accessory ports. Then, if you like bubble levels, this kit does not disappoint, with levels on both the tripod and ball head.

The build quality of the tripod is nice, and you can choose from aluminum or carbon fiber to suit your style and needs. I tend to opt for the increased durability and material resistance of carbon fiber in tripods, as mine are used in sand, salt, snow, and everything in between. Both the aluminum and carbon fiber versions are rated for performance and withstand temperatures down to -4° F / -20° C. As an outdoor photographer, I appreciate this standard of quality. Being an all-in-one, you might not know what to expect. It doesn’t have a wobbly, cheap material feel or experience. I noticed that parts of the tripod that you would hold, like the handle, leg locks, knobs, etc., are a very soft yet grippy silicone. Rather than normal smooth plastic, the silicone material used helps make it super easy to tighten, loosen, adjust or even just hold the cold metal. I appreciate this thoughtful material choice for ease of use but also from an inclusivity standpoint.

A crucial part of tripod shopping is the weight. This is another aspect where the Chronicle shines. Despite all its bells and whistles, the overall weight of the entire tripod kit is right on par with most travel tripods. The aluminum kit weighs 4 lbs, 11 11/16 oz / 2.15 kg and the carbon fiber version weighs in at 4 lbs, 2 7/8 oz / 1.9 kg. Considering that this is a standing, tabletop, monopod, and handheld tripod all-in-one, the value is all there.

With so much to offer, the Chronicle tripod by ProMaster might just be the all-in-one for you. If you would like to add it to your kit, the Chronicle is going up on Kickstarter August 22nd, 2023. If you save the Kickstarter now to be an early backer, you can access Super Early Bird pricing and save up to 43% off MSRP pricing!

For Your Next Adventure: ProMaster SP528K Tripod Review

Chris Gampat The Phoblographer ProMaster SPH45p Tripod review images 1-250s200

The ProMaster SP528K Tripod kit is exactly what most serious photographers need.

Fact: the staff of The Phoblographer is always on the lookout for new tripods. We use them a lot when we’re testing gear. And because of how much abuse we put them through, we tend to break them. None are created equal. In our discoveries for the perfect tripod, we were introduced to the ProMaster SP528K. At under $300, this tripod can get really tall – taller than I am. But the best part about it is the ball head. It’s capable of doing things that much more expensive heads do. It’s not perfect, but at the price point, I’m not sure anything can beat it–and it has us liking a lot of what the ProMaster lineup can do.

Pros and Cons

promaster travel 4 tripod

  • Solid build quality
  • The tripod head is positively wonderful
  • It can get very tall
  • Super sturdy in most instances
  • A bit large when fully collapsed
  • I wish it had more bubble levels

We tested the ProMaster SP528K with Leica, Fujifilm and Sony cameras.

Specs are taken from their website listing:

For storage, protection, and transport use the following tripod case:

ProMaster TC-24 (product 5001) – when the tripod is fully folded in it’s transverse leg position

promaster travel 4 tripod

When it’s at the tallest position, the ProMaster SP528K is really large. I’m five feet and six inches, and it’s taller than me. But as you can probably guess, it’s not the most stable at this height. That’s not to say it’s awful at all. It’s not super stable because of what it is: a surprisingly lightweight aluminum tripod.

promaster travel 4 tripod

Let’s start at the bottom. The ProMaster SP528K has rubber feet. If you unscrew these a bit, they expose the metal spoke you see there. I’m explicitly calling it a spoke.

promaster travel 4 tripod

The ProMaster SP528K uses clips to collapse and lock the tripod legs. The center column has a little hook for weight. Though in practice, I’ve never found the weights to be all that great.

promaster travel 4 tripod

These clips function super well. And best of all, they’re built very well. This tripod has been in sand and dirt both. But they haven’t affected the legs at all.

promaster travel 4 tripod

Each leg has a few sections. In real-life use, it’s not as quick or simple as grabbing a bunch, twisting, and letting the leg elongate. You have to be slower and more methodical, and I’m alright with that. Be sure to remember to elongate each section evenly.

promaster travel 4 tripod

The ProMaster SP528K comes with a beautiful ball head. This head has several controls. One knob controls the ball head plate, another to adjust rotation of the plate, another for controlling the rotation of the ball head, another for controlling the sensitivity of the rotation, and yet another for controlling the rotation of the entire unit. There’s a ton of control, and that’s why I adore this ball head.

promaster travel 4 tripod

Build Quality

promaster travel 4 tripod

This is not a carbon fiber tripod, so don’t expect it to be super lightweight. It’s instead made of aluminum, and I like that. Plastics are suitable for camera gear in some ways, but I think it’s about time that we really start returning to metal. One of the reasons for this has to do with environmental concerns. But also because photography goes into two different categories: professional and hobbyist. The tripod caters to a common demographic amongst each: the passionate photographer. And those photographers deserve the best build quality that they can get. Of course, they’ll get it from the ProMaster SP528K.

Not only for image stabilization, the modern tripod is handy as a composition tool these days. And the ProMaster SP528K allows a photographer to do a whole lot with the precise and careful movements that you can make with the tripod ball head and the adjustments one can make to the legs. The ProMaster SP528K is overall a tripod that oozes with high-quality durability. We’ve thrown it into car trunks, onto rocks, etc. It keeps working. Mind you, it’s a bit heavy and large overall. This level of build quality that’s a bit smaller would probably be ideal for a travel tripod. But overall, the ProMaster SP528K is one of the best tripods I’ve used when it comes to build quality. I’ve always personally loved Vanguard and Cokin tripods. But Vanguard tripods usually have one quirk that breaks–and breaks really badly.

Ease of Use

promaster travel 4 tripod

Out of the box, the ProMaster SP528K is really easy to use and set up. Perhaps the most complicated part is the tripod head. That’s because it has a lot of different functionalities. You can do things like dial in how much sensitivity the ball head has. It also can let you tilt, pivot, etc. I expect this level of control from higher-end products, but the entire package together is cheaper than most camera lenses . One nice touch is the tripod legs. They aren’t rounded for a twist–which has its advantages all its own. It lets you be much more careful about how you’re setting up the tripod to take a shot. I think that both cityscape and landscape photographers will really like the ProMaster SP528K because of just how much it lets a photographer do in an affordable package. It lacks the sexiness of more modern tripods, but it more than does the job.

Something to note: this tripod has two different types of feet. In the standard configuration, it’s got rubber shoes, so to speak. If you unscrew those, then they reveal a kind of metal spoke. Yes, a spoke, not a spike. To each their own, and you can use one vs. the other depending on what you think will work better.

A word of warning, be careful of the surfaces that you put it on. While the ProMaster SP528K has a bit of weight to it, it’s sometimes not enough to really weigh it down and keep a camera steady for a super long exposure. Or, if you’re going to do that, don’t extend its height up all that much. The center column has an area for a weight, but I’ve always felt that this is more of a detriment than actually useful.

Conclusions

The ProMaster SP528K does what many tripods do at a more affordable price point. The legs themselves feel pretty standard. But the real value here is in the tripod head. You’ve got a significant degree of control and lots of possible fine-tuning that can be done. Best of all, it makes the image taking process easier.

Chronicle Tripod Kit - Carbon Fiber

Specifications, instruction manuals.

A multifunctional, precision crafted carbon fiber tripod in a groundbreakingly innovative, self-contained package. Whether you’re using your phone or camera, need a tripod, monopod, tabletop or ground-level tripod, or handheld stabilizer, the Chronicle does it all.

The Chronicle is more than a tripod—it’s a self-contained system designed for creating imagery in a variety of ways. Each component of the Chronicle has been designed to maximize ease of use and offer as many choices as possible in one seamlessly integrated device. It works with cameras and phones without the need for any additional accessories to fumble with or lose. It functions as a full-size tripod, a tabletop/ground-level tripod, a handheld stabilizer, and a monopod with optional 3-leg base. And it handles each of these tasks without compromise, providing stability, flexibility, and a phenomenal user experience for creating both stills and video.

A Completely Reimagined Ball Head (patent pending)

The Chronicle’s ball head has a platform like no other. For cameras, it uses a ProMaster Dovetail (arca-type) quick release. For phones, it converts to a sturdy smartphone clamp in seconds. Going back and forth from camera-mode to phone-mode couldn’t be simpler: just turn the conversion knob so the icon of a phone is on top (just ½ turn) and unfold the phone clamp. To return to camera mode, reverse the process by folding the clamp up and turning the knob so the camera icon is on top. The best part is there are no outside accessories to lose, and no special tools required! Never get bogged down again fiddling with tiny screwdrivers, adapters, or additional parts—it's all integrated.

The ball head itself is a joy to use. It has a main knob for controlling ball tension and a separate knob for the panning motion. While most ball heads have one “U” for vertical orientation, the Chronicle uses two “U’s” to give you more control. It has a convenient bubble level to help with composition. Rounding out the features of the head is a control handle which can be attached or removed at your convenience. This handle can be especially useful for video footage; it works in conjunction with the head’s tension control so you can make smooth pans and tilts.

Introducing the Flexor (patent pending)

In place of a standard center column, the Chronicle features an entirely new design. With a camera or phone attached to the head, turn the knob on the side of the Chronicle’s yoke and then pull up on the ball head; the assembly easily lifts out of the tripod to form a comfortable, round handheld stabilizer. Open the Flexor’s legs, and the unit becomes a tabletop or ground level tripod! That’s not all. Detach one of the tripod’s legs to form a traditional monopod by installing the upper portion of the Flexor, with the ball head still attached, to the top of the leg. Unscrew the standard rubber foot from the monopod leg and install the Flexor’s bottom section, and gain a monopod with a sturdy 3-leg base! This base has a built-in ball joint for smooth panning and tilting, as well as a locking collar on the ball joint allows panning movements without tilt.Just like the amazing ball head, the Flexor requires no outside accessories or special tools to convert into its various forms.

The Chronicle is a terrific tripod on its own and can support up to 22 lbs! It reaches a working height of over 59” and collapses down to a folded length of just under 23”. The Chronicle won’t let you down in the cold and is rated for use at -4° F (-20° C). The tripod’s legs have 3 angle positions and are independently adjustable to tame any terrain; because the Chronicle’s feet use a standard 3/8”-16 connection, they can easily be switched out to all-terrain feet.

The Chronicle’s knobs, leg locks, and removable control handle all feature soft silicone for a grip that’s both comfortable and secure. The included quick release plate is the same terrific plate used on our XC-M tripods; it uses soft, textured silicone across its entire top surface to create an anti-twist connection and it has a strap loop making it compatible with various types of hand and neck straps. The Dovetail (arca-type) connection is compatible with a wide variety of plates and accessories from ProMaster and other brands.

The tripod’s yoke features a bubble level and two threaded accessory ports with stainless-steel sleeves—one with a 3/8”-16 port and one with a ¼”-20 port. These serve as connection points for a flex arm, articulated arm, and other accessories. The 3/8”-16 port is also a great place to store the soft foot when it’s removed for connecting the Flexor’s 3-leg base in monopod mode. Finally, the Chronicle comes in a quality padded carrying case with an accessory pouch and shoulder strap for convenient transportation.

The Chronicle becomes an extension of your creativity, wherever your photography takes you. Whether you're taking family photos, shooting landscapes, or capturing anything from sports to astrophotography, this tripod has all the elements you need in its integrated design. You've found the Chronicle, which will inspire your creativity and help tell the story of your life.
