The American Express 2024 Update:
Pga courses: the pga west stadium course is a golf course located in la quinta, california. the pga west stadium course was designed by pete dye and is viewed as the sequel to the tpc at sawgrass. the pete dye golf course, tpc stadium delivers multiple adrenaline rushes throughout the round. host to pga tour “q-school” finals every other year, pga tour hopefuls must navigate the island green of hole #17, known as alcatraz, as well as the menacing water-lined 18th. imagine needing to make par-par on two of the toughest finishing holes in golf to earn the coveted pga tour card.
Named “Stadium” thanks to Dye’s ingenious plan to sculpt spectator seating into the natural terrain, many historic moments in golf have occurred here, including Lee Trevino’s unforgettable hole-in-one on Alcatraz. This won him a carry-over Skin worth $175,000 in the 1987 made-for-TV “Skins Game,” hosted at PGA WEST from 1986-1991. With five sets of tees, the TPC Stadium lures all skill levels.
Jack Nicklaus Tournament Course at PGA West
The Jack Nicklaus Tournament Course, designed by ‘The Golden Bear’ is the third course at PGA WEST to host and has been a part of the tournament’s history. Also a Certified Audubon International Cooperative Sanctuary, at 6,951 yards long, the Nicklaus Private has the highest rating (74.3) and slope (146) of the three Private Courses at PGA WEST.
Initially, Nicklaus was commissioned to design this course to host the 1991 Ryder Cup. With International television coverage gaining prominence, the event was moved to the East Coast to Kiawah Island’s Ocean Course. Nicklaus deemed this incredibly scenic and unique layout one of his Signature Courses.
La Quinta Country Club
La Quinta Country Club was established in 1959 and for fifty years has been known to the world’s golfing community as the “Jewel of the Desert.” It was on their rolling tree-lined fairways where the late President Dwight Eisenhower first became devoted to golf in the desert. Even today, professionals and amateurs alike consider this course, designed by Frank and Lawrence Hughes, one of the finest; its greens among “the best on tour.”
La Quinta Country Club lily pads float on the shimmering lakes that come into play on eight of the holes along the 7060 yards of emerald fairways. The grounds are abundant with rose bushes and mature trees adding to the beauty of the course. Features added to the course recently are the attractive water fountain that separates the 9th and 18th greens, the rambling waterfall at the 7th green, and another along the 8th fairway.

Golf | PGA Tour returns to La Quinta for The American Express
Some of the world's best golfers will take aim at pga west, knowing aggressive play will be vital.
LA QUINTA — The PGA Tour is back on the mainland in the Palm Springs area, where the mandate is always to go low.
Three relatively straightforward desert courses greet the field each year at The American Express, where tidy scores abound and shot-making mettle gets another early season after similar standards in Hawaii. The weather forecast is looking ideal at PGA West La Quinta, with little wind and no rain predicted to get in the way of birdies and eagles by the bunch.
An increasingly large chunk of the world’s top players are making their way to the event in recent years, unintimidated by the high standards necessary for contention and eager to get aggressive.
“I feel like the easier courses on tour, you can’t really get behind, just because it’s so much harder to catch up,” top-ranked Scottie Scheffler said Wednesday. “If you look at a U.S. Open golf course … if the average scores are low 70s, you can still get those crazy-low numbers every now and then, so there’s hope. Here, you can’t get caught too far behind. You’ve got to hit the ground running and start making birdies early.”
Relative simplicity is the new standard at the 65th edition of The American Express, a tournament once known for its complexity — at least between shots.
The former Bob Hope Desert Classic spent a half-century as a five-round pro-am affair in which golf stars mingled with politicians, millionaires and Hollywood royalty for long, languorous rounds. That style of tournament fell out of favor as pro golf generally got more serious in the 21st century – Tiger Woods stayed away, for instance – and the pro-am format was dropped in 2012.
The tournament still has some distinct features, including the three-course rotation before the 54-hole cut. Aggressive play also remains vital.
Patrick Cantlay knows all about what to do: He set the Stadium Course scoring record with a 61 in the final round in 2021, only to lose by one stroke to Si Woo Kim.
“It’s important really to be patient around these tracks,” said Cantlay, who was born in Long Beach and played at UCLA. “You can make two, three, four, five birdies in a row out here, but when you’re making pars, you’re feeling like you’re falling behind. Sometimes you just have to wait for your stretch of holes. They’re courses where you feel like you’ve got to shoot 3, 4 under a side. I know that, but at the same time, play my normal golf and stay patient.”
FAMOUS FACES
The field is impressive at the top, with Scheffler flanked by Southern Californians Cantlay and Xander Schauffele, who returns to the desert after a five-year absence. Defending champion and Kapalua winner Jon Rahm isn’t here after joining LIV Golf, but Justin Thomas is making his 2024 debut with his first trip to the event since 2015.
HOMETOWN GUY
All 30 players who earned their cards on the Korn Ferry Tour are here, but the most prominent is Tom Whitney, the 34-year-old Air Force veteran who attended La Quinta High School. Whitney, who made his first PGA Tour cut at this event in 2018, is starting his first full year on tour.
“There was more pressure coming here in 2018 on a sponsor’s invite,” Whitney said. “Now, I was chatting with my caddie earlier today, and it feels like I belong out here. I’ve earned my way to hold this card.”
MIN WOO’S TURN
Among the other high-profile rookies making their 2024 debuts is 25-year-old Min Woo Lee, who won two international tournaments down the stretch last year and earned his first full season on the PGA Tour. The social media-savvy Aussie finished tied for fifth at the U.S. Open at Los Angeles Country Club last summer, and he’s living in Las Vegas this year when he isn’t out chasing a breakthrough season.
“I know the scores will be low, but you’ve still got to play really well,” Lee said of The American Express. “Like Jon Rahm said, it’s a putting contest, and if you get it on the green, hopefully you make some putts.”

2024 American Express leaderboard, scores: Sam Burns fires bogey-free 61 to command solo lead after Round 2
The american flirted with a 59 during his second round on the nicklaus tournament course.
Nothing could stop players from piling on the birdies in the second round of the 2024 American Express. La Quinta Country Club, the Nicklaus Tournament Course and the Stadium Course all played to an average around 4-under par, with the Nicklaus Tournament Course surrendering the round of the week to 36-hole leader Sam Burns.
Collecting seven birdies and a pair of eagles, Burns went around the par 72 in sizzling fashion en route to an 11-under 61. Burns flirted with the thought of a sub-60 round in the middle of his back nine thanks to a 6-under stretch over six holes but ultimately had to settle for the lowest round of his PGA Tour career.
"I think, based off the scores, obviously everybody's shooting some good numbers, so I think just trying to keep pace and trying to hit as many quality shots and get as many looks as possible," said Burns. "I think the greens are really good around La Quinta, and here, and Stadium, so I think it comes down to being able to make some key putts."
For his efforts, Burns will head into the weekend at 17 under and with a one-stroke lead over Michael Kim, who is on the same course rotation as the pace setter. They are due to play the most challenging course tomorrow, the Stadium Course, along with six other players who currently reside inside the top 10, including Patrick Cantlay, Si Woo Kim and Eric Cole, all of whom are three adrift at 14 under.
This could lead to some shuffling atop the leaderboard and open the door for someone like amateur Nick Dunlap at 15 under. A winner of the U.S. Amateur and a member of the U.S. Walker Cup team this past summer, the Alabama standout looks to not only stick around after rounds of 64-65 but become the first amateur since Phil Mickelson in 1991 to win on the PGA Tour.
Let's take a look at their second-round performances and what to watch for on Saturday in Round 3.
1. Sam Burns (-17)
Burns' presence atop the leaderboard is no surprise; he has developed a knack for these types of tournaments in his young career. In fields that feature top players — but not all of them — Burns is a consistent fixture and a certified closer. Quietly a five-time winner on the PGA Tour, the 27-year-old's arrival in the winner's circle would mark his sixth trip in his last 66 starts.
"I think [the approach is] just same thing," Burns said regarding tomorrow's round on the Stadium Course. "I played well around there in the past, so, hopefully, try to kind of build on that and go out there and just hit as many quality shots as possible, see if we can make some putts."
Sensational stuff from @SamBurns66 ! He leads by one @TheAmExGolf . https://t.co/7J3etQQ3fU pic.twitter.com/dFxBQS5CrC — PGA TOUR (@PGATOUR) January 19, 2024
Other contenders
2. Michael Kim (-16) T3. K.H. Lee, Nick Dunlap (a) (-15) T5. Patrick Cantlay, Eric Cole, Si Woo Kim, Christiaan Bezuidenhout, Adam Hadwin, Alex Noren (-14)
The name on this list to keep an eye on is Cantlay. Mr. Consistent has been so good over the last year and came into this week ranked second to Scottie Scheffler in seemingly every tee-to-green metric. Despite heading to the Stadium Course in Round 3, Cantlay has taken a liking to the Pete Dye design in the past when he nearly chased down Kim in the final round of the 2021 tournament with a course round 11-under 61 on Sunday. He's been ultra-steady with rounds of 64-66, and a mirrored effort over the last 36 may be enough to notch Cantlay his first victory since the 2022 BMW Championship.
La Quinta starters race out in front
There is a bit of a mini trend surfacing at the American Express that centers around those players who begin the tournament on La Quinta CC. Four of the last seven winners have gone from La Quinta to the Nicklaus Tournament Course to the Stadium Course. Through 36 holes, that fraction may grow to five out of the last eight with 14 of the top 25 players on the leaderboard on this rotation.
Get used to this name
Golf fans will be seeing Nick Dunlap on their televisions plenty in 2024. He is not only on the first page of the leaderboard through 36 holes at the American Express, but he also plans to play in next week's Farmers Insurance Open and is already in the Masters thanks to his U.S. Amateur victory. Only a sophomore at Alabama, Dunlap's results do not yet count towards the PGA Tour University rankings, which granted Ludvig Åberg full-time status last year.
That said, there is an accelerated version of this program that has already been achieved by his Walker Cup teammate, Gordon Sargent. In order to reach the PGA Tour through the accelerated program, players must reach a 20-point requirement set by the program. A win would suffice as well, but just in case he doesn't pull through this weekend, Dunlap is currently in possession of 11 and could add to his total in the following ways:
- Win NCAA Championship (3 points)
- Win Haskins Award (3 points)
- Win Hogan Award (3 points)
- Win Nicklaus Award (3 points)
- Reach No. 1 or No. 2 in World Amateur Golf Ranking (1 point each)
- Finish top 20 in a major (2 points)
- Make a start in a major (1 point)
- Make cut in a major (1 point)
- Finish top 10 in a PGA Tour event (1 point)
- Make cut in a PGA Tour event (1 point)
Example: If Dunlap finishes 12th at the Masters later this year, he would receive four points for (1) making a major start, (2) making a major cut and (3+4) finishing inside the top 20.
No fear for the college sophomore. Nick Dunlap heads to the weekend just two shots off the lead @TheAmExGolf . pic.twitter.com/IMrubrFgg4 — PGA TOUR (@PGATOUR) January 19, 2024
2024 American Express updated odds and picks
- Sam Burns: 7/2
- Patrick Cantlay: 6-1
- Eric Cole: 9-1
- Adam Hadwin: 12-1
- Michael Kim: 12-1
- Min Woo Lee: 12-1
- K.H. Lee: 16-1
- Si Woo Kim: 18-1
- Nick Dunlap: 20-1
- Alex Noren: 25-1
- Scottie Scheffler: 25-1
He isn't among the favorites, but Sungjae Im sits at 11 under and at 45-1 with La Quinta CC on deck for his third round. After a middling start to his day, Im got it going with five birdies in his final 10 holes at the Stadium Course to get him within six of the lead. Burns will be difficult to overcome given the temperature of his putter, but if it does cool ever so slightly then someone like Im, who is playing great golf and on the easiest golf course in Round 3, will be able to make up significant ground.

LPGA: Former USC player Malia Nam leads at Palos Verdes after two rounds

Malia Nam took a one-stroke lead into the weekend in just her second career LPGA Tour start, shooting a two-under 69 on Friday in the Fir Hills Seri Pak Championship at Palos Verdes Golf Club .
One of seven former USC players in the field at the scenic course overlooking the Pacific Ocean, the 24-year-old Nam — from Hawaii — played more than 100 rounds on the layout during her time with the Trojans .
“I’ve seen every single inch of this golf course, good and bad,” Nam said. “It’s funny, because in college I never really played well here. This is actually the first time that I think I shot consecutively under par, so I’m a bit surprised myself.”
Playing in the final group of the day to tee off on No. 10, Nam pulled even with defending champion Ruoning Yin and Madelene Sagstrom with a birdie on the par-three sixth and took the lead with a birdie on the par-five seventh. She parred the final two holes to finish at eight-under 134.
Golfers sue city of L.A., calling out failure to stop black market in tee times
A prominent Korean American golf club asked L.A. officials to stop the black market in tee times. Now it is suing the city over its inaction and filed a sweeping class-action lawsuit alleging a breach of public trust.
March 22, 2024
“It’s definitely a pretty surreal feeling seeing my name on the top of the leaderboard, especially with all the best players in the world.” Nam said. “I always knew that I can play out here, but I didn’t expect it to be so quick to see my name up on the top of the leaderboard.”
Nam rebounded after struggling in the middle of the round. She had a double bogey on the par-four 15th and a bogey on the par-four first. In late January in Florida, she tied for 57th in her LPGA Tour debut at the LPGA Drive On Championship.
Yin closed eagle-birdie-birdie for a 65. The 21-year-old Chinese player began the spree with a 5-iron to 6 feet for the eagle on No. 7 and ran in a 45-footer on the par-four eighth. Ranked fourth in the world, Yin followed her breakthrough LPGA Tour win last year at Palos Verdes with a major victory at the KMPG Women’s PGA.
Sagstrom had three late birdies in the afternoon session. The 31-year-old Swede birdied the par-five 14th and 16th and reached 7 under with a birdie on the par-three 17th. She won the 2020 Gainbridge LPGA at Boca Rio for her lone tour title.
Rose Zhang (68), Leona Maguire (65) and former UCLA player Alison Lee (70) were six under. The 20-year-old Zhang won the Mizuho Americas Open last year in her first professional start. Lee had a birdie-birdie-eagle run on Nos. 14-16 for a share of the lead, then dropped back with a bogey on 17.
Linn Grant (68) and Lauren Hartlage (71) were five under.
Second-ranked Nelly Korda had a late double bogey in a 67 that left her three under. She won the LPGA Drive On Championship in January in her last event.
First-round leader Maude-Aimee Leblanc followed her opening 64 with a 79 to make the cut on the number at one over. The only player in the field with a bogey-free opening round, the Canadian had nine bogeys in the second.
Seri Pak is the tournament host for the first time. Pak is one of the most influential players in LPGA history, a pioneer for South Korean players to follow her path.
PGA Valspar Championship
PALM HARBOR, Fla. — Stewart Cink made a great escape from the pine straw for an unlikely birdie and had a four-under 67 that gave him a five-way share of the lead and a chance to entertain thoughts of winning for the second straight tournament.
There’s just one difference for Cink. The golf course is a lot longer. And the guys he is trying to beat are a lot younger.
The 50-year-old Cink, who blew a chance to win on the PGA Tour Champions two weeks ago with a back-nine meltdown, looked steady on a day of 30 mph gusts in the morning, some wind in the afternoon but not close to the nasty weather expected at Innisbrook.
He was tied at six-under 136 with Kevin Streelman (72), tour rookie Chandler Phillips (68), Brendon Todd (69) and Mackenzie Hughes (68).

Who's in, who's out: check out the players currently bound for the 2024 summer olympics in paris, share this article.
With less than 100 days until the field is finalized, the race for a spot in the 2024 Summer Olympics is heating up.
Le Golf National, the 2018 Ryder Cup venue and home of the DP World Tour's Open de France since 1991, will play host to the men's competition Aug. 1-4 and the women’s from Aug. 7-10. This summer will mark the third consecutive Olympic Games to include golf after its return to the schedule in Rio de Janeiro in 2016.
Just 60 players will earn a spot based on the official International Golf Federation world ranking list as of June 17, 2024, and it's important to remember the Olympic qualifying criteria is designed to ensure players from around the world are represented, even if that means a large portion of the field is ranked outside the top 200. (Currently, that's 13 of the 60 players.)
The top 15 players in the world are eligible, with a limit of four players from any given country. The rest of the field will come straight from the rankings, with a maximum of two eligible players from each country that does not already have two or more players in the top 15. The host country, France, is ensured at least one spot, but two are currently qualified.
Here's a look at who is currently in the field, as well as some notables on the outside looking in (OWGR in parentheses).
