Setting sail from Germany on its maiden voyage, AIDAcosma is a first-of-its-kind liquid natural gas (LNG) powered ship with a capacity of over 5,500 passengers. To mark the arrival, DHCT Management along with public and private sector stakeholders will exchange plaques with the Ship Captain, a maritime tradition, to commemorate its maiden call.

Throughout the season, more than 300,000 passengers are expected to arrive at the Dubai Harbour Cruise Terminal, marking extraordinary growth for the cruise industry. Operated by AIDA Cruises, with 20 passenger decks and 2,600 staterooms, the AIDAcosma is one of the largest cruise ships within the AIDA fleet. The ship hosts a range of exciting experiences and features including a Fun Park, children’s pool, water slide, an outdoor sports deck, as well as 17 restaurants and 23 lounges, serving a wide variety of cuisines from around the world.

As the homeport for AIDAcosma, Dubai Harbour will pave the way for green cruising by becoming the first to host a brand-new LNG powered cruise ship. LNG is one of the cleanest-burning, non-electric marine fuels in the industry and can reduce emissions by up to 30 per cent. Alexander Ewig, Senior Vice President Marketing & Sales at AIDA Cruises commented:

“We are excited to return to Dubai Harbour – this time round with the maiden call of our youngest fleet member AIDAcosma. Through AIDAcosma, we are continuing on our path to green cruising and are elated to be collaborating with Dubai Harbour to do so. We are sure our guests will have a great time, as they set sail on a tour of the Orient this winter 2022/2023 , specifically at Dubai Harbour with its line-up of entertaining events and activities, alongside the magnificent Dubai skyline.”

As the owning-company and curator of Dubai Harbour, the diversified investment firm Shamal Holding is the driving force behind making Dubai Harbour an exceptional seafront district. The cruise terminals, which are part of the incredible Dubai Harbour development, showcase the spectacular and beautiful Dubai Harbour skyline to guests and offer a wide array of amenities and services for passengers and crew – from ample seating areas to washrooms, currency exchange outlets, ATMs, Emirates Airline Check-in facility, cafes, retail outlets, Duty-Free, dedicated parking, taxi stands and much more. All facilities are wheelchair accessible and complimentary WIFI is enabled for passengers and crew to stay connected. Dubai Harbour is home to a wide range of upscale living, retail and hospitality experiences that combine to form the region’s most vibrant, and comprehensive maritime lifestyle offering. Located at the centre of modern Dubai, Dubai Harbour is within easy reach from the city’s key landmarks – including the Burj Al Arab, Ain Dubai, Bluewaters Island, and Palm Jumeirah, giving cruise passengers easy access to some of the world’s most iconic experiences. Abdulla Binhabtoor, Chief Portfolio Management Officer, Shamal Holding, the owner and curator of Dubai Harbour said:

“Today is a very special day for us. As we get ready to see full fleets get back in service, we believe there is great scope for extraordinary growth in the region. This includes more destinations, enhanced experiences and new types of cruise travellers. After the success of our last cruise season, we have continued to make investments across Dubai Harbour and Dubai Harbour Cruise Terminals and will also be extending our cruise season into the summer months of 2023 for the first time, with ships calling well into the month of June for overnight port stays for passenger turnaround. H.E. Issam Kazim, Chief Executive Officer of Dubai Corporation for Tourism and Commerce Marketing , commented:

“As Dubai continues to make waves across global tourism, the arrival of the first cruise travellers at Dubai Harbour for the new season will further reinforce Dubai’s position as a leading cruise tourism hub in line with the vision of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai to make our city the world’s most sought-after and visited destination. The continuous efforts of Shamal Holding to enhance Dubai’s cruise tourism sector by developing world-class projects, infrastructure and facilities such as the Dubai Harbour is a testament to the tireless efforts of our valued stakeholders and partners to expand Dubai’s diverse destination proposition. We are also proud to be consistently included as a key port of call by the world’s largest and most popular ocean liners, highlighting Dubai’s global reputation as the ultimate cruise gateway to the region.”

The infrastructure at the Dubai Harbour Cruise Terminal comprises two terminal buildings that offer passengers and crew a safe, comfortable, and seamless experience. Designed to process over 3,250 passengers per hour, the highly efficient and modern terminals are located on a pier stretch of over 910 meters and can accommodate a complete passenger turnaround of two mega cruise ships simultaneously.

The purpose-built terminals ensure simplified and streamlined immigration, as well as customs screening processes, with the dedicated access routes for passengers and crew, facilitated by Seaport Passenger Boarding Bridges, allowing uninterrupted flow between the ship and the terminal. Itineraries

AIDAcosma cruise itinerary program was originally based on homeporting in Kiel Germany (Saturday departures) for roundtrips to Baltic Sea ports - in Norway (Norwegian Fjords), Estonia, Finland, Russia. For the period May thru October (2021) were planned two alternating 7-day Baltic itineraries. Depending on the date, the liner had planned overnights in St Petersburg (Russia) , Tallinn (Estonia) , Helsinki (Finland) .

For winter 2021-2022 season, the boat was scheduled for homeporting in the UAE ( Dubai and Abu Dhabi ) with 7-day roundtrips to Doha Qatar and Mina Salman-Manama Bahrain . However, in May 2021, AIDA replaced the program with 7-day Canary Islands itineraries leaving roundtrip from Las Palmas de Gran Canaria (homeport). AIDAcosma's original schedule for 2021 (October 23 thru December 21) was canceled, and the Dubai program was allocated to AIDAnova .

Eventually, the Maiden Voyage was rescheduled for February 26, 2022 (5-day Hamburg to Rotterdam, with call ports Southampton England, Cherbourg France, Zeebrugge Belgium). The 7-day Mediterranean itinerary program (maiden voyage April 22nd) was based on alternating roundtrips from two homeports ( Barcelona and Palma de Mallorca/Majorca Island, Balearic Spain ) and call ports La Spezia , Civitavecchia-Rome , Ajaccio, Corsica France . The Arabian/Red Sea deployment (homeporting in Dubai and Abu Dhabi) was also rescheduled for 2022-2023 (November thru April).

Serving mainly the German-speaking market, the AIDA ship Cosma also offers fly-cruise deals from Germany and also from the UK.

Aidacosma wiki.

In July 2015, Carnival Corporation signed a shipbuilding agreement with Meyer Werft for the construction of all 4 new-class (Excellence, aka Helios) vessels. Of these, 2 liners were for Costa Cruises ( Smeralda /2019 and Toscana /2021 ) and the other 2 for AIDA ( AIDAnova /2018 and AIDAcosma /2021). On February 27, 2018, Carnival Corporation signed a shipbuilding contract for a 3rd AIDA ship (delivery in 2023) but in June 2021 decided the liner ( Carnival Jubilee ) to be assigned to CCL-Carnival . This was the 98th ship order for the cruise industry's global fleet (vessels in the order book 2018-2026).

Carnival Corporation's new liners all use LNG powerplants (with four Caterpillar-MaK marine engines) that fully comply with IMO's latest regulations. The vessel's design, architecture and machinery features include weight-optimized materials, optimized paints (reducing underwater resistance), innovative electric pod motors, modern heat recovery, navigation and automation systems.

Like most large -sized newbuilds , the AIDA ship Cosma is LNG-powered , with 4x Caterpillar Marine LNG engines (model MaK 16M-46DF) generating combined output 57,2 MW. The propulsion system is based on two Azimuting thrusters (combined power output 37 MW). The ship has 3x LNG tanks (cryogenic steel) with total capacity ~3200 m3. Two of the tanks are larger (length 35 m, diameter 8 m, LNG capacity 1525 m3), while the 3rd tank has length 28 m, diameter 5 m and capacity 520 m3.

The vessel's steel-cutting ceremony at Meyer Werft was held on August 15, 2019, with which officially started its construction. On October 15, 2019, was held the keel-laying ceremony during which the first hull block for AIDAcosma (yard/hull number 709) was put in place at Neptun Werft Shipyard in Rostock, Germany . The traditional coin ceremony's godmothers were Charleen Hoffmann (AIDA employee) and Kenny Schaft (Meyer Werft employee) who placed the specially minted coins under the vessel's first (of all 90) construction blocks. The special event was attended by Tim Meyer (Meyer Werft Shipyard's Managing Director), Manfred Ossevorth (Neptun Werft Shipyard's Director), Felix Eichhorn (AIDA's President), Birgit Hesse (Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania's President), Claus Ruhe Madsen (Rostock City's Mayor).

During the keel-laying ceremony was officially announced the name (AIDAcosma), homeport ( Kiel Germany ) and inaugural season (2021 summer itineraries/canceled in June 2021).

The ship was launched (floated out from drydock) at Papenburg Shipyard on July 10, 2021. The Ems River conveyance voyage (from Papenburg to Eemshaven Holland ) started on October 23rd. Two tugboats assisted the liner to leave Meyer Werft's dock lock. Followed the passing through Leer 's two bridges (Friesenbrucke and Jann-Berghaus-Brucke/Leer) and the arrival in Eemshaven (at 4:30 UTC) for the Baltic Sea trials.

The ship was officially delivered on December 21, 2021, in Port Bremerhaven . The first Master was Captain Vincent Cofalka.

Christening Voyage (2022)

The vessel's official christening/naming ceremony was held on April 9, 2022, in Port Hamburg/Hamburger Hafen , led by godmother Kristina Vogel who was accompanied by the ship's Master - Captain Vincent Cofalka.

Kristina Vogel (1990-born German track cyclist/bicycle racer) is paralyzed since 2018 when she crashed at the Cottbus velodrome. During her active career, she won two gold medals (Olympic Cycling Champions 2012 & 2016) and finished first at the UCI World Championships in 2014-15-16-17-18.

Next table shows the 14-day itinerary's ports of call and times.

The exclusive naming ceremony featured a special light show by ~300 drones and beam lighting making the entire liner shine. The 20-min show was held outdoor (on Sundeck/Pool Deck) and online-streamed. In addition to the ~3300 paying passengers, AIDAcosma's Christening Voyage was also attended by ~350 special guests and celebrity performers, including DJ Quads, DJ Alle Farben (1985-born house music producer/performing at the Pool Deck's Beach Club stage), DJ Mokabi (at Beach Club), Marc Jendrollik (singer from the party music band Gletscher Fezzzer), Reiner Meutsch (hosting on Radio RPR1 the show Mein Abenteuer), Joja Wendt (pianist), Wayne Morris (painter), Niko Formanek (stand-up comedian).

After the show, in the ship's Theatrium, Alle Farben performed a 1-hour concert, while at the Beach Club (Pool Deck), guests were entertained by Ingo Appelt (stand-up comedian) and DJ Mokabi (best known for his 2020-released hit song "The Passenger (LaLaLa)").

The 2022-2023 season is scheduled to see 166 ship calls between Mina Rashid and Dubai Harbour, bringing in an estimated 900,000 cruise passengers and crew. Commenting on the occasion, His Highness Sheikh Mansoor bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Chairman of the Dubai Border Security Council, said: “The strong outlook for Dubai’s 2022-2023 cruise season will help accelerate its drive to realise the vision of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, to make Dubai the world’s most visited destination and the best city to live and work in.” His Highness Sheikh Mansoor bin Mohammed added: “The cruise industry is an integral part of Dubai’s tourism sector and plays an important role in reinforcing the emirate’s status as a global tourism hub. Dubai’s robust port infrastructure and state-of-the-art terminal facilities can handle some of the world’s largest cruise ships, underpinning the city’s reputation as one of the world’s most advanced cruise destinations and a key gateway for regional and international cruise itineraries.” His Highness said: “The scheduled increase in cruise liners and passengers visiting the city’s shores this season is driven by Dubai’s exceptional maritime infrastructure and the availability of some of the world’s most outstanding tourist attractions. Dubai’s position at the forefront of the rebound in international tourism underscores its emergence as a hub for cruise tourism.” Some major cruise liners scheduled to visit Dubai this season include MSC Cruises & TUI Cruises and Ponant (MSC World Europa, Opera, Mein Schiff 6 & Le Bougainville), which will make the award-winning Mina Rashid Cruise Terminal their home port for the season. In addition, C.S. Aida Cosma (arriving on 17 November) and C.S. Costa Toscana, the two new LNG-powered cruise ships, will arrive at the Dubai Harbour Cruise Terminal. Several cruise liners arriving in Dubai have outlined their commitment to sustainability and decarbonisation. Coupled with the energy-efficient infrastructure and facilities in Dubai’s ports, this will help achieve the ambitious sustainability goals outlined in the UAE’s commitment to the UN Sustainable Development Goals and the UAE Net Zero 2050 initiative. The cruise industry continues to significantly contribute to the city’s tourism sector and is set to build on the remarkable rebound of Dubai’s wider tourism sector. Dubai received 98 ship calls and more than 338,697 passengers and crew during the 2021-2022 cruise season. Sultan Ahmed bin Sulayem, Group Chairman and CEO, DP World , said: “Cruise Tourism has become an increasingly key contributor to Dubai’s economy. The emirate’s central location, midway between Europe and Asia, is vital to its success as a primary homeport for cruise ships in the Arabian Gulf and the wider Middle East and its popularity as one of the top destinations. Owing to Dubai’s strengths, including decades of investments in the tourism industry and the expansion of cruise terminals, we are predicting another robust winter for the 2022-2023 season. At our cruise terminals, we expect 123 calls from some of the largest cruise operators, which is a 100 per cent increase over the last season. Additionally, passenger and crew inflows are forecast to rise to around 600,000, more than double the previous season.” His Excellency Helal Saeed Al Marri, Director General of Dubai’s Department of Economy and Tourism , said: “Dubai continues to chart a steady course to enhance its position as the region’s leading cruise destination, in line with the leadership’s vision to make the city the world’s most sought-after travel destination. We are grateful to our valued network of stakeholders and partners for their continued cooperation and support, which has led to a growing number of international cruise operators looking to anchor in the emirate. With the world’s top luxury liners heading to Dubai during the new cruise season, we will work with our partners to encourage cruise travellers to enjoy the destination’s diverse offerings, especially our unique winter sun proposition. Dubai remains a blueprint for global tourism recovery. We look forward to another successful cruise season as the launching pad to generate further momentum across the regional cruise industry and maintain Dubai’s position as a global tourism hub.” Abdulla Binhabtoor, Chief Portfolio Management Officer, Shamal Holding, said: “Following the successful debut of the largest standalone dedicated twin cruise terminal in the eastern hemisphere, we have a positive outlook for the forthcoming cruise season. With the C.S. Aida Cosma and C.S. Costa Toscana homeporting at Dubai Harbour Cruise Terminals along with the arrival of other visiting world-class cruise liners, we will be welcoming thousands of passengers, acting as a natural gateway to the attractions that Dubai has to offer. We look forward to building on last year’s efforts and providing the world-class infrastructure, facilities, and seamless experience necessary to support the region’s maritime tourism, contributing to Dubai’s ambition to become the most visited city in the world.” Dubai has taken important steps to facilitate cruise travel through the strong ongoing development of ports and cruise terminal infrastructure, hassle-free entry procedures and visa facilities, and strengthening collaborations with leading industry players and stakeholders to further drive cruise visitation. Its popularity as a cruise destination has expanded significantly over the past decade, resulting in the world’s biggest cruise liners consistently including Dubai as a port of call in their cruise itineraries. Notable facilities include the award-winning Hamdan bin Mohammed Cruise Terminal at Mina Rashid, capable of simultaneously handling seven mega-cruise vessels and 14,000 cruise passengers. In addition, the Dubai Harbour Cruise Terminal features the most advanced facilities, including bespoke Seaport Passenger Boarding Bridges. Strategically located in the heart of new Dubai, close to international airports and iconic tourist attractions, it can process 3,250 passengers per hour per terminal.

Today Dubai Harbour, the city’s extraordinary seafront district, has welcomed its first cruise ship – the AIDAcosma, officially starting its 2022/23 cruise season.

Alexander Ewig, Senior Vice President Marketing & Sales at AIDA Cruises commented: “We are excited to return to Dubai Harbour – this time round with the maiden call of our youngest fleet member AIDAcosma. Through AIDAcosma, we are continuing on our path to green cruising and are elated to be collaborating with Dubai Harbour to do so. We are sure our guests will have a great time, as they set sail on a tour of the Orient this winter 2022/2023, specifically at Dubai Harbour with its line-up of entertaining events and activities, alongside the magnificent Dubai skyline.”

As the owning-company and curator of Dubai Harbour, the diversified investment firm Shamal Holding is the driving force behind making Dubai Harbour an exceptional seafront district. Thecruise terminals, which are part of the incredible Dubai Harbour development, showcase the spectacular and beautiful Dubai Harbour skyline to guests and offer a wide array of amenities and services for passengers and crew – from ample seating areas to washrooms, currency exchange outlets, ATMs, Emirates Airline Check-in facility, cafes, retail outlets, Duty-Free, dedicated parking, taxi stands and much more.

Abdulla Binhabtoor, Chief Portfolio Management Officer, Shamal Holding, the owner and curator of Dubai Harbour said: “ Today is a very special day for us. This is not only the first time we have an LNG-powered cruise ship making its way to the city, but also a new cruise season that we look forward to with renewed excitement and anticipation. We look forward to continuingto play our part in welcoming more passengers and ships, as we aim to contribute to the region’s cruise tourism sector . ”

H.E. Issam Kazim, Chief Executive Officer of Dubai Corporation for Tourism and Commerce Marketing, commented: “As Dubai continues to make waves across global tourism, the arrival of the first cruise travellers at Dubai Harbour for the new season will further reinforce Dubai’s position as a leading cruise tourism hub in line with the vision of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai to make our city the world’s most sought-after and visited destination. As sustainability and decarbonisation are crucial elements of Dubai’s tourism strategy, we welcome the arrival of eco-friendly cruise ships like the Aida Cosma, further boosting our efforts to become a major sustainable tourism destination.

AIDA Cruises is the market leader in the German-speaking cruise market and currently operates one of the most modern fleets in the world with 13 cruise ships, including the first-ever LNG propulsion cruise ship built. AIDA Cruises is one of the nine world-leading cruise lines forming part of Carnival Corporation & plc, one of the world’s largest leisure travel companies.

AIDA Kreuzfahrthafen Dubai

Kreuzfahrt Dubai

Buoni i cocktail!

AIDA Orient-Reisen: Neues Cruise Terminal in Dubai
