FAQs about Chardham Tour Packages

Q. What are the opening and closing dates of the Chardham Yatra? A. Prior to going ahead and booking one of the Chardham packages, you need to ascertain what time of the year you are going to be travelling and whether or not the Chardham Yatra is open at that time of the year. Chotta Chardham comprises Kedarnath, Badrinath, Gangotri and Yamunotri, with the temples marking the sources of Hinduism’s four rivers - Ganga, Yamuna, Mandakini and Alaknanda. The Chardham Yatra remains open between April to the first half of November. Although the specific dates are announced by the state government of Uttarakhand annually and it states the opening and closing dates of the circuit. In the winter, the deities are moved to their winter abode such as Joshimath for Badrinath, Ukimath for Kedarnath, Mukhba for Gangotri and Kharsali for Yamunotri. These winter abodes stay open round the year and you can visit them in that season in case you cannot make it to Chardham within the stipulated period. Q. What is the significance of Gangotri in Chardham Yatra? A. As you go through Chardham tour packages, make sure you have enough time at Gangotri, the source of Hinduism’s holiest river, the Ganges. The holiest shrine in the country, the Gangotri Temple is greatly revered for being the source the Ganga River. Legend has it that the rock on the site acted like a shield to save the planet from the disaster the river could have otherwise wrecked as it poured out of Lord Shiva’s matted locks sitting in Mount Kailash. It is believed that Lord Shiva placed the rock in that position to stop the onslaught of the gushing waters. The temple was built in the 18 th century by Gorkha commander, Amar Singh Thapa. It is Gaumukh which is the original source of the Ganges, but the Gaumukh glacier is about 19 kilometre up ahead of the Gangotri Temple. The temple opens its doors on Akshay Tritiya usually in May and closes down on Bhai Dhuj in late-October or early-November. Pilgrims, believing in Ganga’s healing properties, take back bottles full of the holy water. There are several smaller shrines in the region, each home to a legend on the Ganges’ evolution that has its roots in mythology. Q. What route do you take on the Chardham Yatra? A. All Chardham holiday packages will mention in detail the route you would be taking on your tour of the pilgrimage circuit. Arrive in Haridwar from Delhi and then travel to Barkot. Barkot is the closest source of the Yamuna River, the Yamunotri, around 200 kilometre from Haridwar. Return to Barkot and now head towards Gangotri that is about 210 kilometre away. Proceed from Gangotri towards Uttarkashi, a scenic 95 kilometre drive. Continue to Sitapur from Uttarkashi that is around 212 kilometre away, and from there head to Gaurikund. Gaurikund would be the starting point of your 14 kilometre trek to the shrine of Kedarnath. After paying your respects at the Kedarnath Temple, continue to Rudraprayag that is about 75 kilometre away and from there proceed to Badrinath. Badrinath is about 160 kilometre from Rudraprayag. Visit the shrine and further arrive in Birhi, about 95 kilometre away. From Birhi Rishikesh is around 160 kilometres. Take a cab to get into Haridwar from Rishikesh and further to your onward destination. Q. Is Chardham yatra booking availabe in 2023? A. All vaccinated tourists will be allowed for Chardham Yatra from 14 May 2023. Q. What is the best time to go on a Chardham tour? A. The Chota Chardham circuit created in the 8th century by Adi Shankaracharya comprises Gangotri, Yamunotri, Kedarnath and Badrinath. April to June is the best time to visit Chardham as the weather remains pleasant and you can do with some layering, although you would need sweaters after sunset as the temperatures drastically plummet. You must avoid a trip to Chardham in monsoon or winter when it gets very cold and the rains making the treks and hikes extremely treacherous. Q. Which are the places included in a Chardham trip? A. While the Chardham yatra involves Badrinath, Dwarka, Rameswaram and Puri, the Chota Chardham includes a visit to Kedarnath, Badrinath, Gangotri and Yamunotri. Kedarnath being the abode of Lord Shiva, Badrinath that of Vishnu, Gangotri Temple near which is the source of the Ganga River and Yamunotri Temple, a temple built on a site which is close to the source of the Yamuna River. Q. What will be the route taken on a Chardham tour? A. You will begin from Haridwar and go to Barkot, Barkot is about 200 kilometre away and close to it is the source of Yamuna, Yamunotri. From Barkot, head for Gangotri which is 210 kilometre away. From Gangotri, visit Uttarkashi which is 95 kilometre away. From Uttarkashi, head out to Sitapur, about 212 kilometre away, and from there to Gaurikund, which is the starting point of your 14 kilometre trek to Kedarnath. Post your visit to Kedarnath, head to Rudraprayag which is 75 kilometre away and then to Badrinath which is 160 kilometre away. From Badrinath, reach Birhi which is 95 kilometre away, and further to Rishikesh which is another 160 kilometre away. You can take a cab to Haridwar from Rishikesh and take the train to your onward destination.

Char Dham Yatra: A comprehensive guide to the sacred pilgrimage

Uttarakhand, which is also referred to as Devbhoomi or the Land of Gods, is home to many temples and warmly receives devotees throughout the year. The Char Dham Yatra is one of the most significant pilgrimage circuits in Uttarakhand that draws countless devotees, among the various religious sites that they visit. The term Char Dham refers to the four holy places in Uttarakhand state, which are Yamunotri, Gangotri, Kedarnath, and Badrinath. These four destinations are believed to be the abode of gods and goddesses and are considered highly sacred by Hindus.

These shrines -- situated at high altitudes -- are closed for approximately six months annually, starting with the arrival of winter (October or November), and reopening during summer (April or May). The pilgrimage is undertaken by thousands of devotees every year, who believe that a visit to these holy sites will wash away their sins and grant them salvation.

This year, the much-awaited pilgrimage commenced on April 22, 2023, with the opening of Gangotri and Yamunotri temples in Uttarakhand's Uttarkashi district and is expected to conclude on November 21, 2023. As per the schedule, the doors of Gangotri Dham were opened at 12:35 pm and Yamunotri Dham at 12:41 pm. The portals of Kedarnath opened on April 25 and Badrinath on April 27.

The Char Dham Yatra is traditionally believed to be completed in a clockwise direction. The pilgrimage begins from Yamunotri, proceeds to Gangotri, then to Kedarnath, and eventually culminates at Badrinath. The journey can be undertaken by road or air, with helicopter services also available. Some devotees opt for a Do Dham Yatra, which involves a pilgrimage to two shrines, namely Kedarnath and Badrinath.

Yamunotri: Located at an altitude of 3,293 meters, Yamunotri is the source of the Yamuna River. The main attraction here is the Yamunotri temple, which is dedicated to the goddess Yamuna. The temple opens on the auspicious day of Akshaya Tritiya in May and closes on Yama Dwitiya (the second day after Diwali) in November.

Gangotri: Gangotri is situated at an altitude of 3,100 meters and is the source of the Ganga River. The main attraction here is the Gangotri temple, which is dedicated to the goddess Ganga. The temple opens on Akshaya Tritiya and tentatively closes on Diwali .

Kedarnath: Located at an altitude of 3,583 meters, Kedarnath is one of the 12 Jyotirlingas and is dedicated to Lord Shiva. The temple here is believed to have been built by the Pandavas during the Mahabharata era. The temple opens after Akshaya Tritiya and tentatively closes on Bhai Dooj.

Badrinath: Badrinath is situated at an altitude of 3,133 meters and is dedicated to Lord Vishnu. The main attraction here is the Badrinath temple, which is believed to have been established by Adi Shankaracharya in the 8th century. The temple opens after Akshaya Tritiya with its closing date announced on Vijayadashami.

The Char Dham Yatra is a physically demanding journey that requires trekking at high altitudes. As such, it is important to undertake this journey with proper planning and preparation. The Uttarakhand government has taken several measures to ensure the safety and comfort of pilgrims during the yatra.

"It is important for the devotees to register themselves before travelling to Chardham Yatra and Hemkund Sahib. To ensure a smooth journey, the Uttarakhand government has set up a capping to the number of daily travellers," says the official website, asking everyone to check the validity on the portal and complete the registration before travelling at registrationandtouristcare.uk.gov.in .

In light of the difficult journey, the following health measures are advised for a comfortable and safe pilgrimage by the Uttarakhand government

*All pilgrims should proceed for Yatra after a thorough health check-up.

*People with pre-existing illnesses should carry adequate supplies of prescribed medicines along with prescriptions and contact details of their respective physicians.

Your Ultimate Guide For Planning The Char Dham Yatra In Uttarakhand

From the stunning Rawaai Valley in Yamunotri and the tumultuous Bhagirathi in Gangotri to the snowy peaks of Kedarnath and the gurgling Alaknanda at Badrinath, the Char Dham Yatra in Uttarakhand is a divine blend of nature and spirituality. Here’s a handy guide to planning one of India’s most important pilgrimages. By Karan Kaushik

Everything you need to know about planning the Char Dham Yatra in Uttarakhand

About the char dham yatra.

Char Dham Yatra

Nestled in the majestic Garhwal Himalaya, the four sacred sites of Yamunotri, Gangotri, Kedarnath, and Badrinath form the Char Dham Yatra. Devotees from all corners of the country have been embarking on the arduous pilgrimage for ages now. The Char Dham Yatra is one of the most accessible pilgrimages of its kind in India.

All the four sacred sites are perched in the far reaches of the Himalayas at altitudes of over 10,000 ft. While the season for the pilgrimage extends from May through November depending on the Hindu lunar calendar, the months of May and June witness the biggest rush of pilgrims. All the four dhams are located at the end of four separate routes. You may choose to set foot on the four different journeys either in combinations of continuity or visit a few of them independently.

There are pilgrims who do all the four holy sites in one trip and then there are pilgrims who come especially for Kedarnath and Badrinath . Logistically and traditionally speaking, the order of the Char Dham Yatra is Yamunotri-Gangotri-Kedarnath-Badrinath.

The pilgrimage is both physically and mentally demanding, thanks to the high altitudes that may result in breathing issues and Acute Mountain Sickness . It makes sense to carry your own medicines, inhalers, adequate woollens, blankets, and other essentials if visiting in peak season. Resources tend to get stretched during this season. However, there is no dearth of decent accommodation and eateries.

To avoid any last-minute setbacks, it is advisable to book your Char Dham Yatra tour through a recognised travel agent. Most tour operators offer affordable Char Dham packages throughout the year. Given the unpredictability of Mother Nature, we’d also recommend undertaking the pilgrimage with a large group of friends, family, colleagues, and fellow devotees. It’s not only a safer option but also makes for a fun experience.

Sequestered in a deep cleft on the Banderpoonch Peak, Yamunotri has traditionally always been the first Char Dham destination. This is where the holy Yamuna River originates from. The prime attraction on the way to Yamunotri is the stunning Rawaai Valley. You can also stop at Barkot and Phul Chatti on your way to the temple.

The presiding deity at the Yamunotri Temple is River Yamuna itself. The sanctum sanctorum houses a black marble idol of Goddess Yamuna. There’s a famous rock right outside the main temple. This rock is known as Divya Shala and houses a hot water spring . This is considered the origin of the Yamuna river. If you wish to visit the technical origin, you’d have to trek a kilometre above the temple to Champasar Glacier next to Saptarishi Kund.

Overlooking the roaring Bhagirathi River, Gangotri — the source of the sacred Ganges — is nestled amidst jagged mountains at an altitude of 9, 980 ft. River Ganges, or Ganga as we Indians call it, is known as Bhagirathi in Gangotri. Its actual source is called Gaumukh, which is a snowy cave.

The Gangotri temple has a venerable history. It was built by General Amar Singh Thapa of the Nepalese army during the 18th century. The ruler of Jaipur Maharaja Madho Singh got the temple renovated in 1935. One of the main highlights of this temple is a stone slab called Bhagirath Shila, where King Bhagirath is believed to have meditated to bring the holy river to earth.

View this post on Instagram   A post shared by Kedarnath (@kedarnath_shrine)

Perhaps the most popular stop of the Char Dham Yatra, Kedarnath is India’s northernmost Jyotirlinga. Perched at a height of 11,746 ft, the sacred shrine is steeped in myth and legend. It is said that Sage Adi Shankaracharya achieved samadhi here. The Kedarnath Temple stands in all its glory near the source of the river Mandakini. Pilgrims have to undertake a 14-km trek from Gaurikund to Kedarnath. Ponies, palanquins, and porters are also available for children and the elderly.

The way to the temple is steep for the first 10 kilometres. From Garur Chatti, the path to the temple straightens up. On your way to the temple, take a holy dip in the hot springs at Gaurikund. From Kedarnath, you can also visit Okhimath, which lies on the way to Badrinath. Other prominent attractions that pilgrims travelling to Kedarnath cover include Guptkashi, known for the temples of Ardhnarishwar and Vishwanathji, both forms of Lord Shiva.

The last point of the Char Dham Yatra, Badrinath is located against the backdrop of the Neelkanth Peak. By its side gurgles the Alaknanda River, while the twin mountains of Nar and Narayan encompass it. The Badrinath Temple stands at an altitude of 10,276 ft.

The temple is dedicated to Lord Vishnu, who has been depicted in a meditating position through the idol in the sanctum sanctorum. One has to visit Kedarnath before visiting Badrinath. If you plan to travel exclusively to Badrinath, you will have to visit the nearby Adi Kedareshwar temple first.

Best time to go

The four shrines are open from May to November. Come winters and the committee shuts doors to the temples, owing to heavy snowfall in the region. Monsoons (July-August) can be unpredictable and lead to heavy rains and landslides. The area has been witness to some of the worst floods in the history of natural disasters in India. This makes the time period from April to the first half of June the perfect time to embark on the Char Dham Yatra.

How to reach

If you are travelling from Delhi, reaching Haridwar by bus or train is the best option for you. From Haridwar, you’ll have to take a taxi or bus to Barkot, the nearest town to Yamunotri. The Char Dham Yatra begins in Yamunotri, from where you can head to Gangotri and Kedarnath, followed by Badrinath.

The Char Dham Yatra has been well organized. The temple visits were well timed so that we get darshan in all the temples. Food was quite homely and excellent. The Yatra director was well knowledgeable of the history of the temples and kept everyone interested. I would love to travel again with this team and refer others too. Keep up the good work.

Thank you so much for your appreciation. We are humbled.

Lalitha Muralidhar

The experience with Tirtha Yatra team has been spiritual and great. I will encourage my friends to travel to the holy places with Tirtha Yatra team. They give importance to satsang and satvic food. The kirtana and satsang helps yatris to be more devoted. The sthala purana narrations by the Yatra Director were good.

We are glad that you enjoyed your spiritually uplifting travel to Char Dham with our team.

' src=

Hare Krishna, Do we expect a lot of kirtan and lecture during yatra as it seems the yatra doesn’t belong to any Nama Hatta but more a kind of private travel agency. and secondly is there any deduction in amount if we want to join and leave the yatra from haridwar and not using pony service from Uttar Kashi to Kedarnath.

Hare Krishna Mataji, there would be kirtana as well as lectures during the yatra. Yes it is private pilgrimage tourism company created by ISKCON devotees. The amount will remain the same, in case you are wanting to join us from Haridwar because Yatra actually begins from Haridwara. Pony services are anyway at extra and actual cost to the vendor.

Rajan Murthy

I am interested for this CharDham trip..couple of questions from my side

1) Based on the above comments, everyone need to assemble at Delhi Airport on 1st October night…I would be travelling from Mumbai, so I need to take care of my flight from Mumbai to Delhi myself.

2) Does everyone need to take the Helicopter till Kedarnath and return or we can travel by pony service etc ?

3) Can you provide us with a checklist of items required from our end for this journey since I am travelling for the first time.

4) Typically what is your group strength for this trip (15-20 people).

Dear Rajan Sir, Please find the answer for your questions: 1) Everyone has to assemble at Delhi airport on Sep 30 night between 9 pm -10 pm. 2) No compulsion on the helicopter to Kedar. Pony can also be taken. 3) Once the registration is made, you will be provided with the check list and other necessary requirements a month before the yatra. 4) For Char Dham, the maximum strength will be 40 yatris. Thank you.

' src=

Hare Krishna Give us the total cost per head (Bangalore airport to Bangalore airport)and consider extra charges nil.. Thanks

' src=

If we select the do book flight ticket to us.

You can book the flights on your own as well.

Char Dham Yatra

Chardham yatra 2023- by road yamunotri, gangotri, kedarnath & badrinath, destination details.

Yatra or pilgrimage, this tour visits four holy sites in the Himalayas: Yamunotri, Gangotri, Kedarnath, and Badrinath. ‘Char’ means four in Hindi, while ‘dham’ means religious destination.

High-altitude shrines remain closed for about six months every year, opening in the spring (April or May) and closing in the fall (October or November). The Char Dham Yatra should be completed clockwise. As a result, the pilgrimage begins at Yamunotri, proceeds to Gangotri, then to Kedarnath, and ends at Badrinath. It is possible to complete the journey by road or by air (helicopter services are available). Do Dham Yatras or pilgrimages to Kedarnath and Badrinath are even done by some devotees.

Goddess Yamuna is worshipped at the Yamunotri temple in Uttarkashi district, situated near the source of River Yamuna (the second-most sacred Indian river after River Ganga). Uttarkashi is also home to Gangotri, the most sacred of all Indian rivers dedicated to Goddess Ganga. In Rudraprayag district lies Kedarnath, which is dedicated to Lord Shiva. The sacred Badrinarayan Temple is dedicated to Lord Vishnu in Badrinath. As divine as it is arduous, the Char Dham Yatra fulfills the soul!

Char Dham Ki Yatra

The popularity of Char Dham yatra tour packages speaks volumes about the prominence of this sacred pilgrimage, which covers four sacred temples in the lofty Himalayas in Uttarakhand. The cost of a Char Dham yatra package covers a visit to Yamunotri, Gangotri, Kedarnath, and Badrinath – each of the places with its own legends and histories. While earlier the pilgrimage involved strenuous journeys made on foot across hilly terrains, now you even have the choice to book a package for a Char Dham tour by helicopter. Each of the abodes that form the highlights of any Char Dham package boast of their own religious significance and is dedicated to a different deity. Yamunotri is said to be the abode of the Goddess Yamuna who is believed to be the daughter of the Sun and the twin sister of the god of death, Yama. According to legend, sage Asit Muni resided here and had a ritual of bathing in the waters of both rivers, the Ganga and Yamuna. As he got older and could no longer travel to Gangotri, a stream of the Ganga made its way to him, flowing across the stream of Yamuna.

Dedicated to the Goddess Ganga, this Dham is surrounded by the legend of Bhagirath whose meditation managed to summon Ganga to the earth, where she was tied down by Lord Shiva, sending the waters down several streams, so the earth could be protected against the mighty force of the Ganga. Kedarnath is dedicated to Lord Shiva and has quite the legend associated with its origin. It is said that Lord Shiva, in no mood to forgive the Pandavas so easily, dived into the ground as they came looking for him to absolve them of the crimes they committed on the battlefield. Different parts of the lord came up at different sites – Kedarnath, Tunganath, Madhya-Maheshwar, Rudranath, and Kalpeshwar, which together are known as the Panch-Kedar, where the Pandavas later had temples built.

Badrinath is said to be the abode of Lord Vishnu, who is believed to have meditated in penance when his indulgent lifestyle was criticised by a sage. As he meditated, he was sheltered from the elements by his wife, Goddess Laxmi, who turned into a berry tree.

Book the best Char Dham tour package that suits your preferences and budget. You can explore the best deals for cost-effective prices for Char Dham yatra packages with Veena World for a hassle-free experience. With Veena World, you can also book a package for a Char Dham yatra by helicopter, the cost of the Char Dham yatra package will vary accordingly.

Places Included in Char Dham Yatra Packages

Char Dham yatra packages typically involve a circuit of the four most holy sites in Uttarakhand on a transcendental quest. Apart from the prominent temples, the journey in itself is quite spellbinding as well. As you travel on your Char Dham package, you get amazing views like that of the Himalayas, meadows, mountain forests, waterfalls, rivers, valleys, and surreal natural landscapes. Other spots you can include in your Char Dham package, to cover along the way include Divya Shila, Vasuki Taal, Surya Kund, Bhagirathi River, Neelkanth Peaks, Brahma Kapal, Tapt Kund, Kedarnath Gufa, Gaurikund, and many more sacred sites.

Popular belief states that the journey must be taken in a clockwise direction across the four sacred sites that form the focal point of all Char Dham yatra packages:

1. Yamunotri Dham

Yamunotri Dham is where your Char Dham yatra itinerary will begin. Yamunotri is the point of origin of the Yamuna, which is the second most holy river in India. It is believed that bathing in the river’s water cleanses away sins and protects one from painful and untimely death. The yatra to Yamunotri begins from Janki Chatti and you can book a package for a Char Dham tour by helicopter to get to the temple, you can walk, or you can ride a palanquin or pony.

2. Gangotri Dham

The most sacred river in India, the Ganges, originates from the Gangotri glacier at Gaumukh, located 18 km from the town of Gangotri. The second stop in any Char Dham tour package and a popular destination for a vacation as well as religious tourism, Gangotri is also one of the highest pilgrimage sites in India.

3. Kedarnath Dham

Dedicated to Lord Shiva and revered as one of the 12 Jyotirlingas, Kedarnath is the remotest pilgrimage site included in Char Dham yatra tour packages. At a height of 3.580 metres, the temple is also located close to the Chorabari Glacier, which is the source of the Mandakini River. The temple has been built using extremely large, evenly shaped grey stone slabs

4. Badrinath Dham

Badrinath Temple or the Badrinarayan Temple will be the third stop in your Char Dham tourism package. The temple is one of the 108 Divya Desams and is said to have been established by sage Adi Shankaracharya, who found the idol of Lord Badri (Vishnu) Alaknanda River (originates from Badrinath), which he put up in a cave near the Tapt Kund. Later, in the 16th century, a temple around the cave was erected by a Garhwal King, sandwiched between two peaks (Nar and Narayan), against a backdrop of the Neelkanth peak.

The Best Time to Book a Char Dham Tour Package

You can make a booking for the Char Dham yatra after Akshaya Tritiya in the Hindu calendar, which would fall around April-May. The yatra is not conducted during the winter season from October to March. The summers, from April to June, are ideal for booking a cost-effective Char Dham yatra package, as the temperatures are perfect for exploring the holy sites and the blooming flora of the foothills makes for the most amazing landscapes for you to explore. With an extremely high risk of landslides, the monsoon season (June-September) is not ideal for booking a Char Dham package. Based on when you plan to travel, the inclusions you opt for, and the itinerary, the cost of the Char Dham yatra package will also vary. With Veena World, you can find the most cost-effective Char Dham yatra package that matches your plans exactly You can also opt for Customised Holidays by Veena World, where you get to personalise your Char Dham package according to your preferences.

Tucked in the lap of the Himalayas, Char Dham temples are the spiritual epicentre for Hindus in India. Char Dham, a term coined by the prehistoric Hindu philosopher Shri Adi Shankaracharya, refers to the four abodes of God – Yamunotri, Gangotri, Kedarnath, and Badrinath. According to Hindu mythology, it is believed that the Pandavas visited all the four shrines to absolve their sins before embarking on their journey to heaven. Till date, as April arrives, millions of devotees gather in Uttarakhand to undertake the tough Chardham Yatra, believing that it can open their gates to salvation. After starting from the origin of river Yamuna, Yamunotri Dham, pilgrims head towards the renowned Gangotri shrine. Thereafter, they visit Shri Kedarnath Dham, one of the twelve Jyotirlingas of Lord Shiva and finally end their holy journey at Shri Badrinath Dham, the only Dham sacred to Lord Vishnu. If you’re spiritually inclined and seeking a Char Dham tour to reconnect with God and fill your mind with spirituality, then pick any of the Chardham yatra package 2024 by MakeMyTrip.

Start your enlightening Chardham Yatra by seeking blessings at the sacred Yamunotri temple. Located amidst a picturesque green valley, Yamunotri is the place where the Yamuna originates. As per Hindu mythology, Yamuna is the twin sister of Yama (God of Death), one of the Ashtabharya of Krishna and daughter of Surya (the Sun God). Approachable by a six-kilometre trek from Janki Chatti, the holy town is mainly known for the sacred Gangotri Dham. The temple features a black marble statue of Goddess Yamuna, sitting beside the white stone idol of Goddess Ganga. Apart from the temple, you must include an excursion to Diyva Shila and hot water springs of Surya Kund and Gouri Kund in your Char Dham itinerary. Around a kilometre away from the main shrine is the Yamuna Glacier, located at an altitude of 6387 metre near the Bandarpunch peak in the Lower Himalayas. As per the legends, taking a dip in the streams flowing through Yamunotri Dham can absolve all your sins.

One of the 12 Jyotirlingas sacred to Lord Shiva and a part of the Char Dham and Panch Kedars (a group of 5 Shiva temples in Garhwal Himalayas) circuit, Kedarnath temple is an ancient holy temple. Many stories are associated with the origin of the temple. As per some of them, the temple was built by Adi Shankaracharya in the 8th Century. Other versions claim that the Pandavas worshipped Lord Shiva at the same place where the temple presently stands, to seek forgiveness for killing their cousins during the great war of Kurukshetra. Made of large grey stones, the temple has a Garbha Griha and a Mandap decorated with figures of various deities. To visit the temple, you will have to reach the last motorable point - Gaurikund and then walk or ride a pony for around 14 kilometres. However, if you’re booking a package with MakeMyTrip, you will also have an option to undertake Chardham Yatra by helicopter from Sirsi, Phata, or Guptakashi.

Badrinath temple, also known as Badrikashram, is the holiest of all the Char Dham temples where Lord Vishnu resides in his avatar of Badrinarayan. There are various stories associated with the origin of the Badrinath temple. As per one of them, Lord Vishnu once performed a rigorous meditation at this place. The meditation was so intense that he didn’t care about the weather conditions. To protect him from the scorching heat, Goddess Lakshmi took the shape of a Badri tree and spread over him. Lord Vishnu was so pleased by Goddess Lakshmi's devotion that he named the spot as Badrikashram. The black lingam stone in the temple was founded in the 8th century by Shri Adi Shankaracharya. After a few years, the lingam was enshrined in a cave, and later the Raja of Garhwal installed the deity by building a temple. It is said that visiting Badrinath can absolve all the sins of pilgrims. Another best part about Badrinath is that no trekking is required to reach the temple.

Immerse yourself in the divine powers of ancient temples on this Chardham Yatra 2024 by opting for packages with MakeMyTrip. Whether you're looking for Chardham Yatra by helicopter or planning to take strenuous treks, you will find a range of great value Chardham yatra package at MakeMyTrip.

Online/Offline registration process for Chardham Yatra

Pilgrims planning a Chardham Yatra 2024 are required to get a registration done before proceeding to Yamunotri, Gangotri, Kedarnath and Badrinath. With the help of biometric registration, the state government can receive regular updates of pilgrims' locations for security, data, and mitigation purposes. The registration process, both offline and online, is quite easy. You will have to register yourself at any one of the centres falling on the 4 Dham Yatra routes. Once the process of biometric registration is done, you will get a biometric card, which will also help with availing special facilities like food and lodging.

Although there are around 14 registration centres, it will be best to get an online registration done for the Chardham Yatra to save yourself some time and escape long queues. The process of online registration is quite easy. You need to have an email, mobile number, and a photo ID proof (Aadhaar Card, Voters ID card, PAN card, Driver’s License or Passport). Also, you will have to pay a fee of 50 INR. For the offline registration process, you need to carry a phone number and a photo ID card.

Best Time to Go on Chardham Yatra

The best time to visit Char Dham is from April to June and October to September as the temples remain open for pilgrims during this period. The temperature ranges between 3°C to 20°C, making it the best time to seek blessings at the temple. However, it is advised to carry heavy woollens as nights can be chilly. So, if you wondering which season to be picked for your Chardham Yatra, here’s what you should know:

Chardham Yatra in Summers

As mentioned above, the ideal time to go on a Chardham Yatra is from April to June. This is the summer season which witnesses pleasant weather for pilgrims. It also celebrates various festivals with great pomp and show.

Chardham Yatra in Monsoon

Since trekking is required to reach here, it is best to avoid visiting the dhams during the monsoon season due to occasional landslides.

Chardham Yatra in Winters

Months of September and October are also considered the best time to visit Chardham. This is the winter season with chilly weather and less crowd-.

Frequently Asked Questions About Chardham Yatra Package

Ques. how long does the chardham tour package take.

Ans. A Chardham tour package can be for 4-6 days if you are journeying by helicopter. At the same time, it does require a minimum of 10-12 days if you are planning to complete the Chardham Yatra by road. And, if you have some time in hand, then there are many other landmarks including the Tapovan, Gaumukh, Auli, Chopta, Vasuki Tal, Bhauravnath Temple, Chopta and Hemkund Sahib that you can include in your itinerary.

Ques. From where does the Chardham tour start?

Ans. All Chardham tour packages usually begin from Haridwar. You can either fly to Dehradun and then go to Haridwar or reach the holy city directly by train or car. Thereafter, you have to travel to Yamunotri from Haridwar, which is around 6-7 hours drive by road. Your tour may also start from Dehradun if you choose to travel by helicopter to the Dhams.

Ques. Which are the Char Dhams in India?

Ans. The Char Dhams in the country are spread in four directions. The term was coined by Sri Adi Shankaracharya. These are Badrinath and Rameswaram in the north and south along with Puri and Dwarka in the east and west respectively. However, the Char Dhams or temples in the Himalayas are the following: • Yamunotri • Gangotri • Kedarnath • Badrinath

Ques. How should I complete the Chardham Yatra?

Ans. You should complete the Chardham Yatra in clockwise direction. This means reaching Haridwar first, before visiting Yamunotri. You can then go to Gangotri, Kedarnath and Badrinath. This should be an ideal way to complete the Chardham Yatra package. The pilgrimage sites encompass 1,607 kms in total. If you are going for a helicopter tour, then you can easily complete the pilgrimage in a week. Here is a sample itinerary: • Day 1- Reach Dehradun • Day 2- Dehradun-Kharsali-Yamunotri-Kharsali • Day 3- Kharsali-Harsil-Gangotri-Harsil • Day 4- Harsil-Sersi-Kedarnath-Sersi • Day 5- Sersi-Badrinath • Day 6- Return to Dehradun and then take your flight back home

Ques. Which Dham should I visit first?

Ans. If you are planning a chardham yatra package from Hyderabad , Bangalore, Delhi or any other city like Haridwar/Dehradun, you should know which Dham to visit first. Pilgrims believe that one should complete the hallowed Chardham Yatra in the clockwise direction. How does this work? The tour should begin from Yamunotri and then move to Gangotri, followed by Kedarnath and finally Badrinath. Getting to Haridwar will be a good way to start the Yatra in this manner. You can fly to the Jolly Grant Airport in Dehradun via Delhi and then take a cab to reach Haridwar which is just 235 kms away.

Ques. Is there any age limit for the Chardham Yatra?

Ans. The rules and regulations of the Chardham Yatra are governed by the temple committees and official authorities. Whether you are planning a Chardham tour package by helicopter or by road, there is no official age limit for the pilgrimage. However, the e-pass guidelines of the committee mentions that children below the age of 10 years should avoid the pilgrimage. Similarly, the advisory also mentions that those who are above the age of 65 should avoid going on the Chardham Yatra. Women who are pregnant are also advised to skip the pilgrimage due to the higher altitude, weather conditions and other risks.

Ques. Which is the best month to go on a Char Dham Yatra?

All the four Dhams or temples (Yamunotri, Gangotri, Kedarnath and Badrinath) remain open only for half of the year. This is usually between April/May to October/November. The final dates are confirmed thereafter on the auspicious occasion of Maha Shivaratri by the Mandir Samiti. They are usually fixed by the priest of the famous Bhimashankar Linga Temple. Since the temples are positioned at higher altitudes, there is massive snowfall in the winter, making the committee close them in this period. Hence, you should plan your Chardham Yatra tour package in the stretch from April or May to October or November, as mentioned. Every winter, the Kedarnath Temple gates stay closed, while the idol is moved to the Ukhimath-based Omkareshwar Temple. The idols of the other Dhams are moved to and worshipped at the Shani Dev Temple in Kharsali, Mukhimath Temple in Mukba and the Vasu Dev Temple in Joshimath in the winter months.

Ques. Which is the nearest airport to the Char Dham pilgrimage?

Ans. While booking a Chardham Yatra package, you must also have an idea about the nearest airports for your journey. All the four Dhams are nearest to the Jolly Grant Airport in Dehradun. It is only 55 kilometres away from Haridwar, while direct flights are also available between Delhi and Dehradun, for those coming from the national capital. Ans. You can choose a Chardham helicopter package online. This will help you explore the pilgrimage sites without any hassle. You can book a char dham yatra package from Haridwar or even a chardham package from Delhi . Many also opt for a chardham tour package from Dehradun . Bharat bhai as a tour manager has made our experience even better. The route and timing of the kashmir trip was amazing and relaxed. It's a +1 for the on field team. The one star missing was for the stay in gulmarg which is really bad. Grand mumtaz is strict NO. Stay was not a 2 star also. The picture and experience was very different. Hope you ammend for future reference.

Rakshit Jain

The experience was as always fantastic. Although we were only 5 person, the response by Anupji (our manager) was spot on. The overall tour experience was very pleasant and fantastic.

No words to express my gratitude to Heena Tours. I wanted to write so many things. Everything was well planned and managed. Tour manager Pushkarji was highly knowledgeable and well mannered person. He was well accompanied by Shivam. All the hotels were well equipped and maintained very well... Food was awesome, not a single item was repeated. Tour bus was very nice. In short our journey was memorable and unforgettable. Tent experience was excellent. Looking forward to travel more with Heena Tours. Thank you very much for kind co-operation.

AJAY BAKHDA

Excellent hospitality, very good hotels & food (pure veg & Jain), staff is super helpful. Tour manager, Nitesh Nirmal was outstanding during whole of our Kerala tour. Had very good bonding with other group members. Really a memorable experience.

Shital Doshi

Perfect Management,Good Service, Nice food , Nice Guide cum Manager Imtiyaz Bhai , and Happy to See that Heena Tours has maintained thier service as I travelled with Heena before 2 decades in 2003.

We had great time. With Heena...suggestions are 1) If possible plan tour ex Mumbai.. 2) Ask Tour manager to give us brief story or details about places we visit..they just say name of place n let us go...so if there is no board there we don't know specification of the place..we heard other tour manager explaining all details .. 3) 2 - 3 days we were free half the day..kindly add more places to cover. STAFF IS VERY GOOD...FOOD AND HOSPITALITY WAS AWESOME
